All Hallow: Croaker Creek

Dark Sea Cove

Cursed by a terrible incident one year before the town’s founding, this tragic town is host to all kinds of spooks, both friendly and not so friendly…

Coming off the back left corner of Pumpkin Acres (opposite of Goblin Woods entrance), a dusty cart trail lead through the woods to an open dry land with a seemingly abandoned late 1800’s frontier town nestled in the middle. After passing through a cemetery listing the dead folks of the town (see Characters), a worn old wood sign sits in the dirt near the entrance with “Welcome to Croaker Creek” scrawled on it. Inside the town, wild west buildings stand like old tombstones, their side worn and windows dirty and cracked, in a long straight line. Past the main town, the path branches two ways; one way leads left towards a rocky landscape and a dried-up creek, while another leads right to an open dusty farmers field with ghostly glowing teepees set up and an old large farmhouse in the background.

In contrast to Pumpkin Acres, which is filled with the bounty of a good fall harvest and has plenty of life and vegetation, the entirety of Croaker Creek is dead and dry in a literal sense. Wilted plants and dead trees line the dusty road and there are no signs of anything living…at least in the mortal natural sense.

Signs of spooks and curses can be found all over the town of Croaker Creak. Along with the appearance of the residents in ghostly attire, you can also hear and see other eerie sights. Voices croak from seemingly nowhere and the sound of water can be heard from the dried creak. Objects move on their own and the player piano will stop playing sometimes when a stranger walks through the door or play certain themes in accordance with certain spirits appearing. It’s pretty clear that the town is haunted by some old wild west spirits but luckily most of them are quite nice! Background music for the town would be mellow and slow county instrumentals.

Characters:

Every character in Croaker Creek has a corresponding gravestone in the cemetery with the exception of Shaman Poloma

Sheriff Leroy Hollow: The old sheriff of Croaker Creak. Although he might not seem like the most efficient lawman, when there’s trouble, he’ll do what’s needed for the community. Died by a gunshot. (It’s unclear whether it was Harry Van Terrior or Snakebite that shot him, but that’s up to the visitors to decide)

Mayor Harry Van Terrior: The mayor and founder of Croaker Creek. Although many praise the mayor for his charitable work and leadership, some suspect that the mayor may hide a dark secret. Died by starvation.

Isabelle Van Terrior: The mayor’s beautiful daughter. Many men tried to woo her into marriage, but suspiciously some who dated her died in mysterious ways. Died by strangulation (again, it’s unclear who killed her, but suspects include Snakebite, Evelyn Sellers and Bo Blackwater.)

Ezra ‘Snakebite’ Crane: An outlaw that brings terror wherever he and his gang of crooks go. A slippery and dangerous thug that delights in scaring individuals and has a wicked fast shot. Died in a shootout with Leroy Hollow and several town folks.

Evelyn Sellers: The mother of one of Isabelle’s suitors that died. A crooked old woman that spites and despises young beautiful woman and one of the suspects in Isabelle’s murder. Some believed she was a witch and tested her by drowning her in a dunking pool. Some think it is because of her death that the drought happened.

Bo Blackwater: A wheel-chair bound cripple that used to drift from town to town. He can often be heard playing his old banjo and singing old western songs. Died when he was hanged for the crime of murder. (He knows he’s innocent, but the rest of the town thinks he’s a filthy liar)

Shaman Poloma: Native American shaman and storyteller. She and her tribe once lived on this land until they were tricked into eating poisoned food.

The Horseman family: A farming family that lives near town. Near the end of their lives, they became haunted by unknown spirits and slowly became insane thanks to the drought ruining their crops and starvation and the incidents in town. (their graves are near the family home or cremated in vases inside)

Other characters that make an appearance in the graveyard and in Croaker Creek are Isabelle’s suitors that gather around her, Snakebite’s gang, some of the shopkeepers (see Shops and Eateries) and the miners in Howl Mine

Attractions:

Howl Mine: A rickety mine cart ride within a mine that suffered many deaths over its lifetime. You can still hear the moaning of miners and see their ghosts as you fly by quickly on this hair-raising trip!

The Bloody Pit: A terrifying drop ride into the depths of the mine shaft, where 13 miners died in an explosion and suffocated on gas.

Storytelling Circle: Gather in the large white teepee and listen and watch as Shaman Poloma tells Native American stories about monsters and evil spirits. Complete with special effects and shadow puppetry on the tent walls.

Tale of Terror: The Horseman Tradigy: An immersive horror show set in the home of The Horseman’s. Intense 14+ A performance that technically isn’t a haunt maze, but will leave you haunted.

Van Terrior Hotel and Scalawag Alley: The actual haunt maze of Croaker Creak, this claustrophobic maze starts in the hotel, where Isabelle’s suitors haunt the halls looking for their love, to the back alley where the pain of starvation and thirst turned the town folks insane, to the secret hideaway of Snakebite and his villainous gang of crooks.

Shops and Eateries:

Nannie’s Outfitters: Owned by a shopkeeper that died in an accident that twisted her head, this costume shop sells more variety of western outfits beyond just cowboys and cowgirls. This includes mining outfits, saloon jobs (barkeep, dancer, musician, etc), and even outlaw costumes.

THE CROAKERS CAMPAIGN CHRONICLES #1.2 CHARACTER INTRO:  Mrgud Slatkoguzi (Grumpy Cuteass in English - yup, you read that correctly) Sometimes you are just a product of your environment. Your path in life is determined by the chances you are given, or rather, the lack of opportunity, leaving you with little choice. Being born in a society that strictly governs birthrate holds various complications. Especially when you are born illegitemately. Grumpy was, one might say, an accident. And not a very happy one. You see, in Syngorn, the capital of the elves of Tal'dorei, no family may have a child without going through the proper paperwork first. Due to elves living for hundreds of years, the early ones agreed that without sanctioning the collective birthrate, the city would quickly become overcrowded. It was made so that couples had to have announced their plan of producing an ofspring years in advance of actually doing so. This gave the government time to accomodate the addition to the society. And often times, the request for reproduction was even denied if the family was in low standing with little to contribute to the city. It was in that kind of environment that Grumpy was born as a result of his parents not being careful. What's worse is that they were nobles and that kind of scandal would mean ruin to their reputation and bussiness. This resulted  in his childhood being quite sheltered. He was not allowed to venture alone in the city and no one would know of his true identity. All education he recieved was in the private confines of the Cuteass estate and given to him by the family butler. His parents were, due to work, also quite absent, though not without love - at least on his mother's side. His father rarely spent time with the child and those years were too early for young Grumpy to understand why that was. Lacking peer contact and friends of any kind, Grumpy latched on to the only person he could - his butler. Over time, during those long study sessions, he grew to love the man and perhaps even overly so. He caught himself staring at his eyes and lips as he talked about history or politics, but he would deny himself such fascinations as he knew they were inappropriate. However, those early years served to ignite his passion for books, reading and learning. There he found escape, worlds much wider than his own, much richer and much more exciting. It came to him as a surprise that one day suddenly he was shipped off to the Emerald Outpost. His parents also neglected to give him a proper reason for doing so. He knew by this point he was illegitemate, as he was of a sharp mind, but what was it that happened exactly then to warrant that course of action, he was not told. Whatever it may have been, his life cloistered in the family house would be traded for a life cloistered in an old military outpost serving today as a trade hub between two of the largest cities on the continent - Syngorn and Emon. It was actually a welcome change. He found he could communicate with people there in an open manner and learned that most of them are, for various reasons, outcasts of Syngorn, and it was there that he found his second rock to cling to. Maina Russala was an old war veteran, though not quite old in years herself, the commander of the outpost given to her as a reward for her service - or so Grumpy was told. But there was always something there that she was not willing to tell him. Other than that, for some reason, she took a liking to him and took it upon herself to continue his education. They quickly discovered he had a knack for sharp pointy things as well as a proclivity for studying. This would serve him well on the path to becoming a bladesinger. Commander Russala was herself a bladesinger and adapted a mentor role in teaching the teenager the ways of a Syngornian warrior artist mage. Grumpy enjoyed his time at the outpost more than all his time at home. He learned about different cultures, about creatures living in the wilds, about fighting and loving - well, at least as it was described in the books...but everything comes to an end sometime. After the defeat of the Chroma Conclave, Russala, having been on the front lines of the fighting, had a sudden change of heart in her relationship to her ward. "The world is too dangerous" - she said. "I can not teach you the ways of an ambush or how to deal with the black hearts of men or even how to develop your singing past the basics. Not while you are here. " - and so she sent him out into the world to collect experiences by himself. To feel on his own skin how the world treats people in it and to learn to deal with everything on his own, without the comfort of his rock. Without a concrete goal in mind, he headed east. After a few weeks of traveling the Plains, feeling quite unimpressed with the adventures thus far, he arrived in Stilben.

Shrine to the Kami

Lord Kiyohara no Motosuke of the Sengakugi Reaches had a daughter, Sei Shōnagon, famed throughout the Reaches and the Shogunate as a poet of great discernment and power. As an artist called to witness all aspects of life as the spirits moved her, she was often given to journeys from the court of the Prince of Flowers when her artistic muse demanded it. While the Iron Lotus or Black Cats were often tasked with her protection within the Shogunate or Reaches, when she travelled beyond the space controlled by the Prince of Flowers, trusted mercenary clans were called upon to safeguard her.

Usa Hachimangū shrine was the destination of Sei Shōnagon’s pilgrimage, a shrine to Hachiman, the Kami of war. This shrine was sacred to those who followed the warrior’s path, as it was here that the Sovereign Emperor Oijin defeated the rebel Funai Otomo, having received a vision from the Kami that promised that if he stood and fought, no matter how badly outnumbered, he would secure victory for all time. This founded the dynasty that both the Prince of Iron and Prince of Flowers descended from.

The great difficulty for Lord Kiyohara was that the rebel Funai Otomo had based his rebellion in a province of the Shogunate that had long since broken away, and been absorbed by other powers. In the current era, the Usa Hachimangū shrine was deep in the pirate infested reaches beyond the Jungle Moon of Rizpah. No passage for Shognuate troops could be permitted without causing war, so the Lord must make contract with a mercenary Clan, one both strong enough to protect Sei Shōnagon on her pilgrimage, and one whose officer would cause whispers at the court about romantic indiscretion.

The Avengers of Bunny offered such an officer. The Lady Kyra, and her Ten Who Were Taken were a company of great renown, lead by an officer of both repute and breeding. They were strong enough to deter most pirates, but not strong enough as to represent a threat of invasion. Being the daughter of a great Clan Lord, Lady Kyra carried the unspoken promise of retribution even the hardest of pirates or mercenary lords would walk warry of. Lord Kiyohara signed the contract for The Lady and the Ten Who Were Taken to escort his daughter on the pilgrimage to Usa Hachimangū shrine with confidence.

Lady Sei Shōnagon was chattering amiably with Lady Kyra about the purpose of the pilgrimage. An act of artistic inspiration rather than simply religious devotion for the Shinto poet.

Sei Shōnagon’s voice was as soft and gentle as the babbling of a zen master’s garden brook, at once serene and playful.

“It came to me that I would find my next inspiration in the shrine of Usa Hachimangū. A shrine to Hachiman, the kami of war, it seemed an odd place for a poet to find inspiration. It seemed somehow that since my criticism of the Prince of Iron’s consort Murasaki Shikibu’s recent work on the civil war has brought tensions between us to the point where Hachiman himself might notice us”

Lady Kyra checked the feed of the sensors of her perimeter mecha, both the passive sensors and the last records from the Defenders of Bunny archives so that she would be flagged if any of the terrain had been modified to suggest fortification or ambush. Seeing her Taken were on high alert and keeping watch without her correction, she mulled over her ward’s words before responding.

“Imperial court ladies take literary criticism so personally?” Lady Kyra was curious, as the Lady of Pain was always interested in any thought that drove those in power to violence she might either be contracted to dish out or prevent.

Sei Shōnagon’s laugh was like birdsong on a spring morning, light and carefree.

“Oh la, court ladies have been known to contract mercenary houses to wipe out whole colonies because another lady wore the same dress, or imitated the paint pattern on her court fan. To lose face in the Imperial Court is to lose the influence that controls the commerce of entire planetary sectors, and the dance of status is as serious in its way as the dance of two kenjutsu with live blades.”

The lady’s voice dropped into seriousness for the moment.

“Lady Kyra, I do have one concern however. I assumed that inspiration would strike me as to the offering I would make to the Kami at Usa Hachimangū shrine, but not one thought has come to me. I cannot come to the shrine of the Kami of war and make no offering. To do such would be discourtesy, and surely affect the luck of my house, and the court of the Prince of Flowers”

Lady Kyra had her own thoughts about the proper offering to the gods of war, of whatever land, but before she could voice them, data streams began to flash for her attention. There were passive sensors emplaced on the road ahead, not a guarantee of ambush, but not on record as being present when the last Bunny sweep came through. Scanning the active frequencies, Kyra noted that communication channels were full of silent jamming that had just come into existence.

Snapping the command to bring her shields up, she took her own mecha to sprint ahead and left before performing an active sweep, while ordering her company to lag back and shift right. This would leave her point mecha isolated, but also give a false position for the whole of her company, should anyone be ready with missiles to launch an over the horizon attack.

A powerful sweep of her auspex showed a company of mecha in the 90-105 ton classes arrayed in battle order, shields up, and weapons coming online. As her sensors achieved lock, a transmission came from the enemy machines. A coal black Antithesis flanked by a line of Apatotron’s sent a transmission over the jamming.

“This is Alpharius, of the Alpha Legion. Lady Murasaki Shikibu offers you the chance to end your miserable existence at the Shrine of Usa Hachimangū, and spare your ronnin’s lives, or you can wait to be dragged there and executed for the discourtesy of your review of her book.”

Lady Kyra laughed “I stand corrected Lady Sei Shōnagon, literary criticism does seem to be an agreeable reason for war. Would you do me the courtesy to observe the dispute from the shrine itself? I am afraid my cockpit would be an ungentle place to witness the battle from”

As Lady Kyra eased her charge gently onto the shrine’s steps with the Regis claws, Lady Sei Shōnagon suddenly laughed and clapped her hands.

“Oh Lady Kyra, you have solved my problem. You shall make my offering to Hachiman for me. Lady Kyra, will you do me the honour to crush these foes for the honour of the Kami of Usa Hachimangū? I think it is a fitting offering to Hachiman, the kami of war. Do you agree?”

The Lady Kyra bowed, and moved back to the point position of her command. Powering her comm system to reply on the same frequency.

“Lady Sei Shōnagon regrets that Lady Murasaki Shikibu’s literary efforts are weaker than the mecha forces she sends to defend them. My lady intends to offer your destruction to the Kami of this shrine as thanks for her welcome. Buckle up boys, you are about to earn your pay the hard way”

Moving to a charge the Ten Who Were Taken crested the hill. A rain of missile lashed the crest as they hit it, but Kyra’s deception bore fruit and the missiles were outside the range at which their terminal guidance could correct far enough to hit them. In response, her consort Croaker hammered a Trislagger into one of the Apatotrons with enough force to strip most of its front armour plate. A second touch of Flavian spear finished it.

A second Apatotron hammered a salvo of Metal Mamba at Lady Kyra’s central Humbaba, but when the smoke cleared, the Humbaba let loose with a forked salvo of Longbowman whose combination of fork and splash stripped most of the armour from the remaining Apatotron and Sever. Kyra’s Notos Tobo fired a Prometheus that also forked to strip the remaining armour from the Sever, who was well shielded against fire, and shut down the Apatotron that was somewhat fire vulnerable. Within a few seconds of battle the front rank of the Alpha Legionaries were scrap, and the Ten Who Were Taken followed their Lady in a charge through the scrap of that rank to close and rend the foe with the fury of the punishment platoon of the Avengers of Bunny. Made of the discipline cases, the brain burned, the more than slightly mad, the Ten Who Were Taken would be almost impossible for anyone other than the Lady of Pain to control, but for her they would burn worlds. Two of her front line remained functional as they stood over the shattered enemy rear rank.

As they approached the shrine, a strange sight awaited them. A strange red quadraped mecha knelt in front of Lady Sei Shōnagon. The lady was painting with her brush with clear resolve as she had pinned it to the armour of the strange mecha’s leg.

Lady Sei Shōnagon read her poem aloud, an offering both to Hachiman, the Kami of this shrine, and to the warriors that fought in her honour.

Bowing to the shrine, and then to Lady Kyra, the Lady Sei Shōnagon let formality fall away with another joyous laugh.

“Oh Lady Kyra look! Our offering to the Kami was accepted. Hachiman himself set a Kami in return. Please, you must accept the offering from my hands and from his!”

The strange scarlet one hundred and five ton machine turned to Kyra and bowed. “What are your orders commander?”
