I just love the dichotomy of sumeru fighting for its life, meanwhile Mondstadt's having a harvest & wine festival.

okay so i did all of it in one go the SECOND the update dropped and first of all???? kaeya actually being somewhat open about his past at dawn winery and talking about sneaking off to sumeru to see if he could find anything about Khaenri'ah,,,

part of me wonders if he was trying to find his way home. that was my first thought, at least

either that or he could've just wanted to investigate the possible remnants of his homeland

also the mental image of crepus traveling to sumeru to drag kaeya back to dawn winery is SO funny omg

anyway. this confirms that as a kid, kaeya was great at hiding and going unnoticed (for a short period of time, at least)

he described it as a "short-lived adventure" as if it was just something he did for fun, but i feel like it was more of a "i don't know where my father went after leaving me here and i know i can't ask for help from anyone around me so i'm going to take matters into my own (tiny) hands and try and get home/learn about home"

also, on that note, kaeya knowing khaenri'ah is near sumeru is...interesting

honestly, just the location is interesting to me

sumeru is, for the most part, surrounded by other nations (liyue, natlan, maybe fontaine? idk i'd need to look at a map) so unless khaenri'ah is west of sumeru, it's somewhat central to the other nations and has gone completely unnoticed since it was destroyed

anyway, back to talking about kaeya

in the weinlesefest, we heard kaeya's father's voice for the first time, and it was the line about kaeya being their nations only hope. however, i guess that line doesn't really affect kaeya in the way we thought it did. while we assumed he was always being torn between mondstadt and khaenri'ah, he was actually starting to think that his father left him there for his own good

honestly, healthy mindset there, king!

anyway after that he says "A happy life sounds good to me, of course. Even if it means being cut off from... certain things."

king. hey. are you talking about being cut off from your birthplace or being disowned by diluc; you gotta give me some direction here. personally, i'm going to assume he's talking about diluc now

kaeya had a very happy life when he was with crepus and diluc, and maybe he's including other people's happiness in his definition of a happy life. he's a people pleaser--if others are happy, so am i--and he thinks diluc is happier without kaeya

also him just saying that alberich is his surname makes me :(

like. listen. i know diluc disowned him so he cant really use the surname ragnvinder. but like cmon :(

and him saying his surname is "probably" the only link to khaenri'ah he has left,,, very interesting

             this is pretty much what i’m gonna go with because, if varka had known razor’s parents from the jump that would have meant he knowingly left a child in the wild. varka found him years later and only managed to salvage what was in that box from what was left at a camp not far from where andrius initially found baby razor. 

           WHICH MEANS his parents are adventurers who could literally be from anywhere and if i want them to have been from sumeru and (possibly) related to cyno then i’m gonna.

you've wanted to cheer her up ever since her eleazer has been acting up - so what better time to see an old friend than now?

the moment you two set foot in mondstadt, you can see her shaking from excitement but also…agitation? you surmise that it may be because of what had happened here but you assure both of you that it’ll be fine

you two don’t have much to do with the festival itself it was just a good excuse to drag collei out of the forest so you two go straight to searching for the outrider

when you two do spot her, she rushes over and gives collei the biggest hug she could muster then bombards her with a billion question, barely paying attention to you which you already expected so you’re not too bothered

the three of you walk around town, basking in the beauty of the city, adorned in eye-catching seasonal decorations and comforted by the western wind

you don’t check out any of the wines of course, but there isn’t any harm in looking at the wine ingredients booths - fruits as far as the eye can see. you buy a few for the other two as a treat

you chuckle at the two’s antics; they really are like siblings, or like the woodland creatures collei has been accustomed to watching back in the forest…you’re glad you made the decision to drag her along to the festival

when you two are about to leave, amber pulls you in for a group hug and asks a passerby to snap a picture of you three - and thus, there you are, smiles eternally engraved on parchment.

you brought your tissues just in case he ends up crying because of how much he misses mondstadt

during your whole trip there, he just couldn’t stop grinning from ear to ear at all the festivities; you try to invite him to dance to some of the music there but he seems too embarrassed to do so

despite not being much of a wine-enjoyer, he still pays a visit to every booth. to nobody’s surprise, he gets along with everyone almost immediately - and not just because he recognizes some of the people there

you two would sit down somewhere when tired and he’d reminisce on the good old days he used to spend in this humble land

“haha, it seems like some things just don’t change, huh?”

he‘d thank you profusely for inviting him and for convincing ayato to give him a few days off for the festival

jokingly, you propose that you two should try making your own thousand-wind wine, hotpot-game style…but then he assumes a pondering pose

“hmm…not a bad idea, actually.”

you make a mental note - do not mention this idea of yours to ayato.

zhongli (feat. venti)

you don’t tell him but the main reason you brought him along is because you’ve heard talk of a windcoming day in which the anemo archon returns to his beloved land. knowing well that the ex-archon hasn’t seen his old friend in literal ages, you plan to reunite them even if it means becoming a possible third-wheel

but you do take zhongli’s refined tastes into account; you’re positive he would show his utmost appreciation for the culture here - and he does! taking the time to taste-test each and every wine and commenting on them in the form of long-winded babbles, this is the zhongli you know and love

you try to ponder about how exactly barbatos would return home and when exactly is this windcoming day is, when a cheery voice interrupts your train of thought

“well if it isn’t you, mor- i mean, zhongli!”

speak of the devil. well, archon, technically. you observe zhongli’s reaction; he appears to be somewhat indifferent, but his relaxed body language indicates that he’s happy to see his old friend again. you smile and sigh in relief

although the two of them are old buddies, they seem to treat you as one too. thankfully, you never had to become a third-wheel and you had no issues keeping up with their conversations. they would even tell you about their misadventures back in the day

“did you know, back in the day, morax used to- hey, don’t give me that look!”

you find yourself entertained by these two gods of old and when it’s time to go home, the bard throws at both of you a bottle of wine each, both labeled “thousand-wind wine”, and with that a wink.

ok time to ramble after 3.5 Archon quest (spoilers if you haven’t done it)

So I was technically right about the immortality being the curse, but wrong about the corruption being what turned the people into hilichurls. And it’s obvious now that the abyss mages/lectors/heralds came about from people tapping directly into that power, so that’s not the corruption either.

Which makes me think that maybe the Khaenri’ahns, through the gods showing up or maybe khemia, were saved from the forbidden knowledge corruption. The game told us outright that they had been afflicted by it, but we’re seeing no signs that they still are.

So Chlothar and Kaeya. 

Here’s the thing, I don’t think Kaeya is his direct descendant. Kaeya’s father could have been a relative of Chlothar‘s, or descended from said relative, and that would still qualify Kaeya as Chlothar’s descendant. 

And I still stand by the idea that the current Alberich clan likely isn’t in cahoots with the Abyss Order. That letter from HS, the voice line from Weinlesefest -- they don’t give the impression that Kaeya’s father is on the side of the Abyss Order. On top of that, if there was a disagreement between Chlothar and the other Alberich’s, it would further explain why the Alberich’s don’t keep written records and work in secret.

Another thing: the HS letter said the Alberich’s took control when Irmin was too weak. Obviously the founding of the Abyss Order happened after Khaenri’ah was already gone, so the Alberich’s likely were regents because the twin was passed the crown but they were seen as underage (hence them being called prince/princess of Khaenri’ah, not king/queen). 

The Alberich clan was also probably fairly sized, which is why Chlothar said “you could hardly be expected to know all of us”. Chlothar could have been only one branch of the family, again supporting the idea that Kaeya isn’t necessarily a direct descendant of his.

Moving on to Kaeya specifically.

We all know this man talks in half truths to conceal his lies, so trying to guess which is which is half the fun with him.

I think he’s being truthful when he said he doesn’t know much about Khaenri’ah itself. It was long gone by the time he was born, and he just confirmed for us he was still very young when he was left in Mond.

I think his story about going to Sumeru to look for Khaenri’ah was true, but whether it was really to learn of his heritage? It’s possible, but I think he could of also just been a kid who wanted his father and to go home. After all, Kaeya said it wasn’t long after Crepus took him in that this happened.

I also think Kaeya genuinely didn’t know about the Abyss Order founder being an Alberich. His “huh?”, following silence, and pose all clearly say that he’s thinking and processing that info. Plus he says not once, but twice, that said info just confirmed some suspicions of his. And if Kaeya genuinely didn’t know this, it further supports the idea that the current Alberich Clan isn’t working with the Abyss Order.

Then Kaeya follows that up with calling Dain a pureblood like it’s an accusation. Kaeya’s pupil and skin already had a lot of us believing he might be of mixed heritage, but I think that interaction just confirmed it. I mean Kaeja is a nordic name, but Kaeya is hindi. His name is both Khaenri’ahn and Sumeran. (also noting that the darshan that studies ley lines and elemental magics is represented by a peacock. I will not be surprised in the slightest if Kaeya’s mother was a Sumeran scholar of said darshan)

In all honesty, I’m not sure what this is gonna mean for Kaeya in the long run. I always got the feeling that while Kaeya knows a lot more than he lets on, he also doesn’t have all the info he should. If anything, I'm starting to wonder if that leaked outfit for him is gonna be tied to him looking into his heritage now.

Venti and Xiao already know each other briefly when Xiao heard Venti's music, and Kazuha and Kokomi also know each other from Kazuha being in the resistance for a short time

Kazuha and Venti being music buddies, Venti playing the lyre and Kazuha playing the zither (+ Xiao feeling relaxed when they play)

Venti trying to get Xiao to open up more... but being very chaotic in the process

Kokomi doesn't really like the idea of Xiao going head first into battle, as she thinks about her comrades' health

But then she learns that Xiao has c e n t u r i e s of experience, and opts for him allowing her to heal him afterwards instead

Kazuha's calm nature unintentionally is what draws Xiao to open up to him

Eventually they both speak about their past- Kazuha with the Musou no Hitotachi and Xiao with the Five Yakshas, and it seems they can relate to each other more than they think

Xiao usually likes to be alone, but Kazuha often goes and sits with him, not saying anything. Just some silent and peaceful times.

Kokomi gets excited when Venti tells her he's met "Zhenyu", and they like to have conversations about "A Legend of Sword"

Venti sneezing as much as my dad when Kazuha brings his cat

Kokomi teaching Kazuha more about Genius Invokation TCG. He'll be a pro after learning with a strategist.

Kazuha declining Venti's constant offers for a drinking buddy, cautious because he knows there's always a possibility of a "fruity cocktail"

The four of them participating by creating their own fecund blessings around Mondstadt <3

Jean encouraging them to also find and open other fecund blessings to make them feel more welcome and enjoy Weinlesefest

kaeya isnt a huge favorite character of mine but as an equestrian myself i love thinking abt his own horse experiences lol. also soft-ish ragbros content because i desperately want them to be happy *shakes fist at hoyoverse*

warnings: mentions of character death, major spoilers for kaeya and diluc’s story (mostly what’s covered in the manga), and possible contradictions to the canon timeline? like idk if i got stuff right about the timeframe/age of kaeya being adopted, joining the knights, etc but hopefully it can be overlooked since it isn’t a major part of the hc list lmao

kaeya has loved horses his whole life

both his original father and diluc’s had horses, so he’s been around them a lot

when he was little, he spent all his time playing in the stables

by the time he was around 10-12, a little bit after he was taken in by the ragnvindrs, he could care for the horses by himself

crepus would ask him and diluc to help him name new foals

he started learning to ride almost immediately after getting better at caring for the horses

diluc and kaeya would follow crepus on horseback through the wilds of mondstadt sometimes when they accompanied him for errands

after crepus died, kaeya taught himself, and surprisingly became rather skilled

i like to think that there was a period where kaeya and diluc were close immediately following crepus’ death before they drifted apart

so, kaeya taught diluc a lot of what he knows now about horseback riding

when kaeya joined the knights of favonius cavalry, he felt right at home

he learned some vaulting and one-handed skills from training with the other knights

so now he’s REALLY good

he excitedly tells diluc everything he learns whenever he can

diluc listens, but this is during the period when they started to drift apart, so he feels the smallest twinge of jealousy

regardless, a small part of him is proud of kaeya, and he does his best to voice this since he doesn’t want to dampen his brother’s mood

nowadays, kaeya likes to go for quiet rides around windrise on his days off

for those of you who might not know, most horse’s “names” are nicknames! domestic horses have what i can only describe as “legal names” or as they’re more commonly known, “show names.” these names are typically structured similarly to actual names, with two words (“shooting star”), but some people will use phrases (“a walk with grace”) or titles of movies, songs, etc (“dark side of the moon” “candy crush”). i don’t wanna bore you with the details here, but if you’re interested just look up how horses’ show names are chosen! okay back to the kaeya horse girl hours)

kaeya bought his own horse about three years after he joined the cavalry

she’s a fresian (very pretty breed i love draft horses so so much mwah my big fluffy babies) named shining miracle

kaeya calls her miracle or mira for short

everyone in mondstadt knows mira

kaeya sometimes walks her through the city on patrols, and will almost always be stopped by people leaving gentle pats on mira’s neck and saying hello

during the windblume festival and weinlesefest, kaeya likes to braid cecilias and windwheel asters into her mane.

mira is gentle and soft tempered, so even in the most chaotic of festival settings she will stand quietly

during festivals she gets lots of extra treats, and bakers in mond have taken to making special horse-friendly treats especially for her

needless to say, she’s very well taken care of by both kaeya and the entirety of mondstadt

sometimes, when he’s stressed or otherwise upset, kaeya will take mira out to the shore and gallop her up and down the beach

(with breaks, of course. no matter how pent up he may be, kaeya would never push mira to exhaustion because of it)

okay if anyone has more questions about mira and kaeya i would be so so happy to answer them i’m kind of obsessed

i had a big grin on my face the entire time yae was on screen… i didn’t know she was going to appear in the event but it was such a nice surprise (especially since the other characters were starting to bore me)

and i also just really like seeing the familiar faces… it’s why i loved weinlesefest from the last patch. after sitting through five archon quests of only sumeru characters you just start to miss some of the others…

okay so now that DDatSIB is complete, I wanna talk a bit about it (WIP playlist is in here too!!) spoilers for the fic below cut

So first: I knew all along that Scara had to be the protagonist, but I spent ages deliberating over the ship. It was very nearly ScaraMona, but as I considered the parallels between Scara and Kazuha it became more apparent that it had to be Kazuha

The 'Kazuha finds out Scara is the prince' reveal was a LOT earlier in the initial fic. As in like... I think he found out in C4?? But it was still like, C10 (which was at that point the final chapter) before they got together, there wasn't as deep a sense of betrayal to go along w that either. I'd fully written the fic, was reading over it, and went "wait, why is the primary conflict THIS early??" and restructured EVERYTHING and it was so worth it imo, much more impactful

Until the day I posted C4, I was THIS close to rewriting it so that Scara DIDN'T put the condom in Lumine's jacket pocket hahaha I thought people would hate it

The earliest scene I wrote was the star gazing and the first kisses on Kazuha's balcony. It was such a clear vision in my mind, the two of them in each others arms and watching the skies. There were other scraps here and there, the intro, the KaeyaScara scene, but the balcony was such a huge visual for me.

I've started to write a sort of epilogue chapter, and it's basically turned into an epilogue sequel! It'll be about 5 chapters following the first year of Kuni and Kazuha's relationship. Having a bit of a block w it right now, I've got all the ideas and a lot written, but I need to edit back and write forward, so there's no prospective timeframe rn. Until then I might write some rarepair oneshots based on an AU my friend and I have been working on

The Weinlesefest chapter was maybe the hardest. As I've said before, this fic was a way of me working through some stuff, and the dissociative episodes and the lingering words from years ago are so difficult. There's so much self doubt, it's so hard to shut it off sometimes. But I'm trying. The sequel is a lot about recovery, healing, learning, and that's where I am. I'm healing, and I want to take the character I've seen myself in through that journey too. We deserve to heal. We all do.

Finally, here's the playlist!! I'm not a huge music person but I've been trying to get back into it, so here's just a few songs that made me think of the fic :) Most are KazuScara, some specific to Kazuha or Kuni, and there's some TomoKazu mixed in there too
