Nostalgia Bait in Mermaid Form

Which show did you like more as a kid? Mako or H2o?

I liked both. H2o gives me always these beachy mermaid vibes with the iconic song no ordinary girl, Mako shows me instead more of the mystical vibe that comes with the mermaid stuff like the pod, the trident, the history between Merman and Mermaids, the water dragon, the different pods around the world and so on. It explores and opens up the world of H2o in some way. Not to forget Rikki’s Cameo in the third season.

Mako Mermaids F/Feb Day 9 Summer

Day 9 Summer, Ondina/Weilan, 260 words, Rating T

“I got this feeling on a summer day when you were gone! I crashed my car into a bridge I watched. I let it burn! I threw your shit into a bag and pushed it down the stairs. I crashed my car into a bridge - I don’t care, I love it! I don’t care!”

The highway zoomed past, other cars passing and dropping as Weilan manoeuvred around, pushing her luck with the upwards creeping acceleration. There were never any speed cameras here anyways. 

Spring and had turned to Summer, the Pod was growing and so was her relationship with Ondina. The next step was this weekend getaway to Suzhou, just an hour and a half away from Shanghai. 

Weilan borrowed her friend’s Mini convertible for the complete “hot girl in a movie summer experience” as she had called it. Roof down and tunes blaring as she sped along the road, hand on Ondina’s thigh. The Mermaid’s skin was warm under her palm and her blonde curls turned from crazy to mental as the wind whipped them. 

“You're on a different road, I'm in the Milky Way. You want me down on Earth, but I am up in space, you're so damn hard to please, we gotta kill this switch. You're from the '70s, but I'm a '90s bitch!”

“I love it!”

Weilan let her voice out, singing as loud as she wanted, Ondina joining her. The months in Shanghai and stuck with her Weilan’s music had clearly rubbed off on her.

“Hot girl summer is on!” Weilan whooped.

“Weilan, policecar!”

“Shit.”

Y/N felt bad for Erik. Everyone was giving him the cold shoulder since he came back to the Gold Coast. Mimmi. Cam. Evie. Zac. David. Carly. Especially, Ondina. Weilan and Y/N were the only ones who tried to be nice, but whenever they would approach him to talk, Ondina or Zac would steer them away from him.

It wasn't until a chance swim to Mako Island that Y/N met the older merman. He was sulking in the moon pool as Y/N swam towards him. "Penny for your thoughts?"

Erik turned to him and gasped. "What are you doing here?"

"I was out for a swim and decided to come here. This island is for all merfolk, right?"

"I guess so. I'll leave." Erik turned to duck his head underneath the water, but Y/N stopped him.

"Wait, don't go. Please? Stay." Y/N said.

"Why?"

"Because I want you too."

Day 3 Cake Weilan/Ondina/Mimmi, 582 words, Rating G 

Weilan hummed away as she dumped out the flour into the measuring bowl, scrunching up her nose as the flour dust flew up. She cleared the digital display with one finger. 186g. Weilan pouted and dug around the drawer at hand’s reach to find a spoon. Spoon by spoon she removed the excess until it finally reached the necessary 125g. 

Perfect.

Now for the sieve. Sieve. Sieve. Sie - 

“Weilan? What are you doing?”

Weilan jumped and her arm flailed out catching the bowl and sending it flying off the edge of the worktop and smashing on the floor in a mess of glass and creamed butter mixed with sugar. At least the flour was still safe in it’s measuring bowl. 

She just stared at the shattered bowl for a second before turning up to look at Rita.

“Making a mess.”

“I can see that,” Rita raised an eyebrow. 

“I’m trying to make a cake. Ondina and Mimmi are fighting so I figured cake might bring us all back together.”

“Want some help?”

“Yes please!”

“First things first, you get tidying the floor. I’ll get everything we need ready. Mise en place, Weilan. Helps every time.”

“I don’t know what that means but if it means grab everything as I go then that’s exactly what I do,” Weilan grabbed a wad of kitchen roll and scraped up the worst of the butter mix.

“Watch your fingers.”

Weilan held her hand over the mess and gathered each bit of glass slowly in her hand, “you want it fixed or dumped.”

“Fix it if you can. Be good practice.”

An hour later Weilan pulled a fresh baked still steaming sponge from the oven. Warm golden brown and it smelled so damn good it was taking every bit of self control not to just bite into it.

“Perfecto!” 

“It worked?” Rita asked from the attached sitting room. 

“It worked! Now to ice it.” Visions swirled her mind of piped roses and love hearts. Or maybe fondant icing. 

“Let it cool first Weilan or it won’t work.”

“Okay fine.” Weilan dropped her daydreaming and left the cake on the counter. She slipped off the oven gloves and haphazardly chucked them on the counter as she crossed the boundary from kitchen to sitting room. 

“Can I join you guys?”

“Sure.”

Weilan hopped over the back of the armchair in the window she had unofficially claimed as hers and settled in. Rita was sitting on the couch with her feet up on the fluffy footstool. Veridia lying beside her, stretched out across the rest of the couch with her head on Rita’s lap, fast asleep. 

“Aw cute.”

Footsteps and chatter came drifting through. 

“That sounds like them, Weilan,” Rita warned. 

Weilan leaped up, “Wait no don’t come in here!” 

Too late, Ondina and Mimmi both rounded the corner.

“Why not?” Ondina demanded the exact second Mimmi squealed, “Ooh cake!”

Weilan sagged, “it was meant to be a surprise. I was going to ice it and everything for you guys.”

“For us?” Mimmi asked. 

“Yeah, you're my girls and you were sad so I made cake.”

“Aww, you’re so sweet,” Mimmi hugged her.

“Yeah thanks,” Ondina gave Weilan a private happy smile. Weilan blew her a kiss in return.

“We’ll help ice it, won’t we Ondina,” Mimmi broke off from Weilan but kept one arm around her, the other sneaking out to pull Ondina in too. 

“Course.”

Mimmi gave each of them a kiss on the cheek, “love you guys.”

it is very inch resting to me that sirena, lyla, and nixie are the most popular mako mermaids trio, at least based on the ppl who see my posts. i really thought it would have been sirena, mimmi, and ondina, if only because iirc they get the most screentime?

for me the og mako mermaids trio are way too similar to emma, rikki, and cleo to be interesting. sirena is basically cleo at the mid-season point, lyla is essentially a more stern version of emma, and nixie is like if rikki smoked some weed and chilled out a little lol

by contrast mimmi and ondina seem like characters in their own right, not near carbon copies of their predecessors. i guess many people watched the first season of mako mermaids and tapped out afterwards, so they wouldn't exactly have memories of mimmi, ondina, or weilan? much 2 think about
