Mo Dao Zu Shi/The Untamed fanfic recommendations, pt. 2
Jiang Wanyin Fix His: Mistake by Rika (@/HarukiUsagi46)
Summary: After the death of his father, mother, sister, Jin Zixuan and Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng felt like there is no one left that in his family beside Jin Ling who is sleeping next to him since there is no one in Jinlintai that can look after him like he can. "Wei Wuxian, why? Why? Why? Why did you leave me behind like everyone else did? Tell me why?" "Please anyone....anyone at all.....I want to fix this....I want to fix all of this....I want to fix my mistake...." Jiang Cheng doesn't know that his wish is about to be granted. Let see what happen okay?

Searching for Perfection by AitchNKay (@/AitchNKay)
Summary: Lotus Pier is gone. Wei WuXian and Jiang Cheng are hiding in the Yiling supervisory office and Wei WuXian finds a way to give his brother his core. That's how the story went once upon a time. So what happens if Wen Qing says no. Wen Qing glared at this idiot and gave in. "Fine. I'll do the surgery. But you need to tell him first." Wei WuXian was so excited he practically danced into Jiang WanYin's sick room. She followed slowly, but Wei WuXian's voice was loud enough for her to hear the entire tale. She crossed her arms and glared some more at the liar and his ShiDi who was getting all excited himself at the prospect of BaoShan SanRen giving him a new Core. When the story ended, Wen Qing smiled, sharp as a knife. "Now tell him where his new Core is going to come from." Jiang WanYin looked completely confused. It would have been adorable on a five year old; it looked too out of place on a seventeen year old. "What do you mean?" "I mean, tell him where his brand new Core is going to come from. It's not like 'BaoShan SanRen' can create a Core for you. You should have learned enough Core Theory to know that. Logically, then, your Core has to come from another person. Wei WuXian, you should also explain exactly who will be playing the part of your mother's grandmaster." You promised!" Wei WuXian turned an accusing glare at the doctor. "You promised you wouldn't tell him!" "And I'm not." Wen Qing held up three fingers in an imitation of this irritating idiot. "I have no intention of telling Jiang WanYin the truth of who he is going to get his Core from nor the truth of who is going to implant it." She smiled again, cuttingly. "You are." And with that, she swept from the sick room, her job done for now.

Kara knew grandmother was ancient, and had travelled far and wide searching for her lost child. The little girl felt fortunate to have been taken in by her, to have grown from infancy being protected in a way no other child was. Perhaps it was lonely, but she didn’t care, not after grandmother had shown her how to make friends.
One such friend was perched atop her head, tangled in her hair. Little bones were wrapped in bits of fabric, keeping things from catching too badly. The hamster watched carefully as she listened, sketching out lines in the sand under Grandmother's instruction. The lines made characters, the sort that she practised daily.
It was near the end of her lesson that Kara heard a faint crunching of shoes against the sandy ground and felt the weight of her grandmother's hand leave her shoulder.
They were too close to a village for this to be anything good, and he did not seem to carry the same tentative energy most had in this small region filled with evil spirits. He must be a cultivator, and cultivators were always a threat.
The thick smoke of Grandmother's spirit streamed towards the intruder, filling the air with a ghostly whisper of "my child" and a foreboding aura. As for the girl, she hissed at the new arrival and did her best not to seem scared. Dirty and feral she was still clearly alive, a little girl dressed in stolen rags with the same stubborn look in her eye as the being she called grandmother.
Her unsheathed knife was kept behind her back, the old blade sharpened to the best of her ability despite its low quality. If Grandmother's claws could not rip the stranger to shreds then perhaps the blade could. Then they could go some place safer, before more cultivators came. That was a good plan, much better than risking Grandmother in a battle with more than one cultivator.
Still, despite her desire to get this over with quickly she hung back and glared, the tiny skeletal beast perched on her head mimicking that as best as it could. Better to let the spirit start the attack before she leapt in, Kara would rather avoid the rampages that tended to happen if she got hurt accidentally. Those were always bloody, and dangerous.
@demoniccultivations gets a starter

whats up I was going thru your LQR tag bc i have a lot of thoughts about cql LQR (are these thoughts coherent? pending) and I'm thinking about the end of the scene in ep. 27 when he tells off LWJ and like. there are /tears/ in his eyes...even in a pretty sidelined and somewhat antagonistic character, the depictions of generational trauma in this show are something else. Anyway, do you know of anyone who's done a visual analysis of that scene? I'd love to read it or hear your thoughts. 1/2
Tumblr media
okay, first of all, let me just say that "are these thoughts coherent? pending” is SUCH a mood. my brain, 90% of the time
second of all, I must also direct you to this excellent post by @dying-redshirt-noises and @hqfeels if we’re planning to have Lan Qiren feels on this blog right now
so I’ve been sneaking “JUSTICE FOR SHUFU” into my tags lately, which is a battle cry I’ve picked up from @pumpkinpaix, because I believe that Lan Qiren is a complex figure who really just wanted the best for his nephews. Unfortunately, he’s also an extremely convenient character for folks to latch onto and deploy as a token antagonistic figure in fics if the story needs a person in a position of authority, close at home, to oppose wangxian’s relationship. It helps that he’s also the sole Lan elder we’re introduced to, and the Lan elders often get dismissed as a faceless, vilified mass who really only exist to grumble conservatively and oppose our protagonists.
I get it. It’s convenient. And it’s got some amount of canonical support, what with Lan Qiren and Wei Wuxian butting heads in Gusu summer school, and Lan Qiren’s repeated exhortations to Lan Wangji to stay away from Wei Wuxian, etc, etc. But Lan Qiren, for me, has always numbered among the tragic and traumatized characters that we both love and forgive over the course of the narrative.
It’s hard for me to extricate Lan Qiren from the relationship that’s examined over and over again in this text: that of the relationship between siblings. The ways the elder siblings make countless sacrifices to protect the younger. The golden core transfer. Wen Qing and Wen Ning. Nie Mingjue’s... everything.
And one of the scariest things in CQL is how often that sacrifice falls short -- after everything they’ve sacrificed, after the prices they paid, the younger sibling is tasked with the impossibility of living on. The long version, in the translated words of Zbigniew Herbert:
The rest is not silence but belongs to me
you chose the easier part of an elegant thrust
but what is heroic death compared with eternal watching
with a cold apple in one’s hand on a narrow chair
with a view of the ant-hill and the clock’s dial
- “The Elegy of Fortinbras”
The short version, in the words of Lin-Manuel Miranda via George Washington:
“Dying is easy, young man -- living is harder.”
The younger siblings in CQL are almost always the ones who have to step up -- Jiang Cheng, in rebuilding and leading Yunmeng Jiang; Nie Huaisang, leading the Nie Sect and avenging his brother’s death; Lan Wangji, taking over the position of Chief Cultivator and a certain amount of Lan Sect Leader duties. Overwhelmingly, these moments happen offscreen, in timeskips, left to the imagination. They’re not glorious or dramatic; they’re tedious, mind-numbing, soul-crushing, especially when considered in context with the monsters of their separate griefs.
So, Lan Qiren. The narrative parallels drawn between the generations, from Lan Qiren’s to Lan Wangji’s to Lan Sizhui’s, could probably fill a research paper. If we regard Jiang Cheng with any sympathy, then we should absolutely extend that sympathy to Lan Qiren as well -- both of them are younger brothers who picked up the slack, who tried their best to honor the best part of the legacies of those who came before, who were saddled with the responsibility of parenting their nephews before they even married themselves, who had to set their own needs aside in order to lead others, who had both the courage and the endurance to live on despite everything.
Again, we don’t know the details of what happened with Qingheng-jun and Mama Lan, but I think it’s safe to say that it happened fast. Qingheng-jun met Mama Lan, fell in love at first sight, married her secretly, locked them both away in seclusion, abdicated his position as sect leader, and after that storm, Lan Qiren was the one left to pick up the pieces. Suddenly, Lan Qiren had to assume the mantle of a sect leadership that his brother was groomed for; Lan Qiren had to take responsibility for the care and education of his nephews despite having no experience himself.
And you know what? Lan Qiren does a pretty kick-ass job. By the time we reach the maturation of the next generation, the Gusu Lan sect has a reputation so sterling that other sects send their heirs to study there. Lan Qiren is accorded more respect and authority on the basis of his reputation and accomplishment in inter-sect affairs. He raises the Twin Jades, trains them in swordsmanship, nurtures their cultivation and aptitude until they’re both held up as the ideal young masters.
Lan Qiren was saddled with responsibilities he did not expect and did not ask for, and executes them well.
But what of his own scars and self-doubt, his own grief and anxiety? What about all the nights he stayed up past curfew, eyes gritty with exhaustion, deciphering ledgers and untangling sect politics that his brother understood better? What about Lan Qiren’s resentment of Qingheng-jun, for discarding the responsibilities he held for his sect for the survival of a single person; what about Lan Qiren’s fears, that his nephews might follow their father down the same path, might dash themselves to pieces against the shoals of what it means for a Lan to fall in love?
You asked about this moment, in episode 27 -- after Wei Wuxian steals away the Wen refugees at Qiongqi Dao, Lan Qiren admonishes Lan Wangji for his actions: sneaking into the forbidden section of the Gusu Lan archives, letting Wei Wuxian and the refugees go. Lan Qiren is frustrated, yes, angry, even -- but more than anything, he’s profoundly afraid. The obsession Lan Wangji has with Wei Wuxian, to the exclusion of all else, of everyone else, reminds Lan Qiren of his brother. And so Lan Qiren tries to snap Lan Wangji out of it through discipline, the evocation of all the morals and ideals he was raised with as a child. Lan Qiren grounds Lan Wangji in Cloud Recesses in episode 24, hammers home the fifty-second principle of Gusu Lan -- do not befriend the traitorous and evil. The fifty-second principle is more than a simple rule deployed to get in the way of wangxian’s relationship; it’s a prescriptive that carries with it the tragedy of the Twin Jades’ parents, the suggestion that, had Qingheng-jun not befriended the traitorous and evil, so much pain, and heartbreak, and grief could have been avoided.
(when Lan Qiren reminds Lan Wangji of this, Lan Wangji protests -- his mother wasn’t -- and Lan Qiren cuts him off. Whether or not Mama Lan was truly, inherently evil is not the question here, nor is Wei Wuxian’s character being discussed. This isn’t about Mama Lan, or Wei Wuxian -- this is about Qingheng-jun, and Lan Wangji, and the fact that their personal preferences and prejudices do not occur in a vacuum. Their actions have consequences, and Lan Qiren knows this because he has borne his brothers’.)
Lan Qiren, of all people, knows that no matter how lofty and unsullied a person’s reputation might be, no matter how pure their moral character or righteous their conduct, all it takes is a single moment to fall in love, to make them shatter, to reduce them to a shadow of their former selves, to reject all of the responsibilities they held before and leave their loved ones reeling in the wake of such a sudden and complete devastation.
So Lan Qiren rises, moves towards Lan Wangji’s kneeling form, and there’s a moment -- blink and you’ll miss it -- where he hesitates, trying to decide if he should walk towards Lan Wangji, to raise him to his feet, or lay a hand on his shoulder. Lan Qiren hesitates, then decides not to -- he chooses instead to appeal to his nephew through carefully-reasoned words rather than physical demonstration of love, to remind Lan Wangji of his discipline and education.
Lan Qiren paces the room, reminding Lan Wangji of his family, his life with the Lan Sect, everything he stands to lose if he throws it all to the wind for Wei Wuxian. Lan Qiren confesses -- all his harshness and strictness came out of his fear that Lan Wangji would follow in his father’s footsteps.
We get this moment in the middle of those lines, when the camera snaps from here:
Tumblr media
to here:
Tumblr media
a jarring cut, primarily because it violates the 180-degree rule. It places Lan Qiren on the right side of the screen, where before he had been on the left.
For me, this does two things, visually -- by placing both Lan Qiren and Lan Wangji on the same side of the screen, it calls back to the fact that Lan Qiren and Lan Wangji are both the younger siblings, emphasizing the potential parallels between their lives that hinge on the decisions Lan Wangji will make. The second shot also removes Lan Wangji from the frame, unbalancing the composition. Now, there’s an absence of a figure to Lan Qiren’s left, gesturing at the absence of Qingheng-jun throughout this entire story, throughout the Twin Jades’ lives. That absence is why Lan Qiren is the way he is -- strict, unforgiving, disciplined, afraid.  Lan Qiren has spent so much of his life adhering to the rules of Gusu Lan and denying any selfish wants because he saw what happened to his brother the moment he deviated from the rules, and he’s terrified the same will happen to Lan Wangji.
So... yeah. We most often see Lan Qiren in opposition to our favorite characters -- he’s the boring old fuddy-duddy who throws a scroll at Wei Wuxian, who continually discourages Lan Wangji from reaching out to Wei Wuxian, who is often taken as a stand-in for conservatism and tradition in the show. At the same time, he is the man who raised his nephews with both love and a profound terror that they would suffer the same way he and his brother did; he is the man who sent Lan Xichen away when the Wen Sect attacked, and did not expect to survive the burning of Cloud Recesses. He is lauded, for his authority and his knowledge; he is delightfully petty, throwing jabs at Wei Wuxian at the Burial Mounds (why don’t you ask him?). In short, Lan Qiren is a person, with all of his flaws and virtues, trauma and weaknesses, and we don’t give him enough credit for everything he did.

MDZS/CQL INSP Gameplay: WangXian
Tumblr media
This Sims 3 gameplay's directly inspired by The Untamed (Chen Qing Ling/CQL), a Chinese historical fantasy BL (boy-love/LGBT+) zombie apocalypse adaptation of the novel Mo Dao Zu Shi (MDZS). I’ll be using the sims 3 the untamed and sims 3 mdzs tags, if y’all want to either track or block the posts.
_________________________________________________
CQL/MDZS is the story of Wei WuXian (WWX), a mischievous boy-genius prodigy who was once the most promising young cultivator of his entire generation--until the Fire Nation (AKA Wen clan) attacked, and razed his entire clan (the Yunmeng Jiang sect) to the ground. Wei WuXian endures great hardships and loss, which leads him to inventing a brand new form of cultivation, necromancy--thus becoming the infamous Mo Dao Zu Shi, or “Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation.”
Next to WWX, the other greatest cultivator in the world is Lan WangJi. From the Gusu Lan sect, the strictest and most uptight boring law-abiding clan in the entire cultivation world, LWJ is sheltered & high-strung. But opposites attract, and he's been secretly in love with wild & carefree WWX ever since they studied together at Gusu's school as teens (before WWX got kicked out for being 100% incompatible with their 3000 rules, cuz ofc, lol).
A lot of the "romcom" elements of MDZS/CQL come from flashbacks to WangXian's youth, with WWX constantly breaking rules & being a brat, and Lan WangJi acting like he's mad at WWX, when really you know Mr. Darcy LWJ is internally loving every second they spend sniping at each other being rivals.
Everything falls to crap while this slowly budding romance is growing between WangXian (the ship name came from LWJ himself, who names the magical healing song he creates for WWX "WangXian," as a portmanteau of both their frikkin names I cannot make this up (Lan WangJi + Wei WuXian)!). Musical magic is the main attack type between LWJ (who uses the guqin) and WWX (who uses the flute), so the WangXian song is a BIG DEAL between them, as LWJ wrote it to soothe WWX when he got injured while they were hostages together.
3 adapted versions of WangXian: 🎼🎵♬
youtube
The BL skinship elements are more overt & explicit in the MDZS novel. Due to Chinese anti-LGBT+ censorship, the adaptations had to be more covert & subtle, though the gay relationship is HEAVILY implied in the live action, CQL. The donghua’s barely midway through the story yet, so we’ll see if they keep WangXian in the friendzone or not.
My gameplay is a mix of the donghua/chibi, live action, novel, and manhua versions. For all that the canon is Angst With a Happy Ending, the story's still PAINFULLY tragic, and I've cried enough over it, so my gameplay ignores a lot of what happened, to just give my babies the AU happiness they deserve!

@honortaught continued
Wei is taken aback by the question that his only reaction was to clench his jaw. That really got him thinking. As much as he'd love to believe himself a wolf, his father would say otherwise. He isn't one until he's proven it, and the only way to do that was to take over Auradon, like his father wishes. But he won't take himself as a sheep either. He was somewhere in between, if that was entirely possible. “I am whatever I choose to be, which is neither of those.”

writer’s tag game!
(tagged by: @criceofpain <3)
what fandoms have you written for? (but not currently)
i’ve written for bts and lams (hamilton basically-) like way back and i’ve written for weilan (shen wei and zhao yunlan) and wangxian months ago.
what fandoms are you currently writing for?
currently, i’m writing for enhypen and twisted wonderland! i’ll be writing for the arcana soon
how long have you been writing for?
abt 4 years i think
on which platforms do you post your stories?
wattpad, ao3 (kinda inactive), and tumblr
what’s your favorite genre to write?
angst <33
are you a pantser or a planner?
it depends honestly. when i really like the plot i’ve made up in my head- i write it down immediately so that it would be easier to publish. if i’m too invested in it, i tend to plan it out.
one shot or multi chapter?
one shots. but if they aren’t enough then a multi-chapter
what is a perfect length chapter in your opinion?
since i’m a lazy reader i would say its about 1k. i think i heard from my english teacher that a chapter length is about 1k words but 1k-2k words are enough :D
what is your longest published story?
uh- i dont really know🧍‍♀️
which story did you enjoy working on the most?
beautiful tears ; park sunghoon. not that i’m a sunghoon biased no, it was a really unique idea to give sunghoon star tear disease.
favourite requests you have written and why?
well i enjoyed every request they send in! but i really enjoyed doing those filo! s/o x twst characters and tel’s request abt malleus :,) mostly i loved tel’s request (it was a love letter prompt) because i was able to unleash my poetic form into it. plus i’m a suck for letters.
are there recurring themes in your stories?
its gotta be friends to lovers or they have feelings for each other but they keep it a secret.
current number of wips?
none atm! just two pending requests
three things you have noticed in your writing?
gets really effortless when it gets longer, i use redundant words, its bullshitted 😃
a quote you like from a published story
“finally, even without hearing your voice, his broken heart is now mended.” — how to mend a broken heart ; kim sunoo
a quote from an unpublished story
none :,)

Rules: tag 9 people you want to get to know
3 ships: My top 3 ships are literally the biggest ships in CQL, Good Omens, and Sherlock. So forget all that! I’m just gonna talk about 3 CQL rarepair ships that I love seeing. I love them as platonic best friends, and also if it devolves into a modest amount of making out and maybe even getting married, I am not opposed.
1) Sangji! I’ve never actually read this but look. Nie Huaisang/Lan Wangji marriage of convenience where Lan Wangji neatly avoids getting whipped, gets to live with someone who doesn’t think Wei Wuxian is evil, also mutual comfort sex because I think they both deserve it.
2) Xixian. Because I adore Lan Xichen and will not deny him anything, not even the beloved husband of my beloved Lan Wangji, whom I love. Lan Xichen can Get It, courtesy of Liu Haikuan’s stunning jawline, and I think Wei Wuxian deserves to have the two hottest men of the cultivation world vying for his attention.
3) Xili. Because as previously stated, Lan Xichen can Get It. And older sibling x older sibling is a good dynamic, actually.
Currently watching: nothing, because I will watch 1 show and them immerse myself in fandom for a full year and refuse to consume any new media. So it’s CQL in my head 24/7 over here. But also I’m rewatching The Good Place, because current events made me feel like I needed some lighthearted existential absurdity. When I finally find my family’s copy of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, I’m reading that too.
Currently consuming: Nothing yet, though I did just eat the instant noodles that I eat every single day, even when I don’t feel like eating it, because I fixate on routines with alarming intensity. I also have a real, old-fashioned kinder surprise egg in the fridge which I will get around to within the hour.
Currently reading: Well, pending my Hitchhiker’s Guide, I’ve been reading MDZS fanfic. For the most recent thing I’ve read that had me thinking about it for hours after I finished it, see For a Good Time, Call by ScarlettStorm. Came for the horny premise, stayed for the brilliantly written characterisation. I love a Lan Wangji with a rich internal life.
Currently craving: Some romantic affection. I simply want to be held and also kissed. On the fucking mouth. God damn.
Tagging @queenprosephone for getting me into CQL, @lifeonfleek09 because we haven’t talked in forever and we’re in different fandoms now but I still think about you, @grinningmasks because you’re too far away, @lorelei-lee because you were the person who inspired me to write like 50k of porn back when I was still doing that kind of thing, @farizah4everangel because I have no idea what you’re up to these days, and no one else because I’ve run out of the moxie needed to bother any more people. But if you see this and you want to do it and we have interacted ever at any point, please go ahead, and tag me.
