you were all expecting me to do this so okay let's see how many others i can drag down this shenlai (i think this is the ship name we've settled on?? i have seen many 沈来之笔 tags on ao3 so i'm assuming that's what the chinese fandom has settled on) hole.

what: republican era communist spy drama (finance bros edition) // completed // 38 eps, roughly 40 mins each where: iqiyi (standard disclaimer that i don’t watch with subs so i don’t speak to the quality of eng subs) why: *chanting* yibo yibo yibo yibo yib- wang yang?? xiansheng???? i'll preface by saying i don't watch many republican era shows - it's really just not my thing, like even zhu yilong couldn't make me watch one and that's saying a lot, but i did finish and quite enjoy this one!! extremely strong cast on this show, and the story moved fast enough and had enough action in it that it kept my attention.

meet my boy wei ruolai:

ruolai is from a v humble family, worked hard to put himself through night school but is having trouble stepping foot into the finance world because he has no money, no connections, no diploma (the school is holding off on issuing him one because he's from a communist-stronghold province 😪). he's working several jobs to make ends meet in shanghai when he decides to interview for a job at the central bank.

he aces his entrance test! ofc he does! ruolai is a bit of a whiz with numbers, and is very very very determined to get the job - the place could be on goddamn fire for all he cares, he'll finish his goddamn test and get this goddamn job even if it kills him.

his performance gains him the attention of shen tunan:

chief of the central bank, The Guy™ of the finance and banking industry in shanghai. extremely attractive in a suit. 100% dilf certified.

xiansheng takes a shine on ruolai, but ends up not being able to hire ruolai despite his excellence because, again, ruolai is from a communist-stronghold province, and they don't want to take any chances with him possibly having communist ties.

does that set ruolai back?? no. my boy sneaks into a party that shen tunan is holding at his mansion, and convinces shen tunan to hire him by essentially picking apart shen tunan's ~secret strategies~ that he's uncovered just by following the finance news and making smart deductions 🥺💚

shen tunan caves and personally hires ruolai as his PA, and begins mentoring him and teaching him the ways of the banking industry.

the show is mostly about ruolai's growth in the central bank and the shift of his political beliefs, centred around the kmt and communist party's conflict in that era. the premise of the show is fairly simple - most republican era dramas move in the same direction. this one was well-written, had a solid cast, and beautifully shot.

the development of stn and wrl's relationship in this show was good! it's v shippable, if that's something that is important to you. ngl, i did stay through till the end because these two were so interesting.

we have proud teacher shen tunan who is so so proud of his boy and takes ruolai suit-shopping and tells him how special he is :

he really does mean it when he says that. he gets tortured and thrown in goddamn jail for shen tunan, and he just bears it all and doesn't let himself react in any manner that could harm shen tunan.

i started this strictly for yibo, and had no expectations that i would enjoy it, but guys...........wang yang is 🥵🔥 in this as shen tunan, and this ship just.......sails itself. what else was i supposed to do except go three hundred different levels of ahhhhhhhhh over them.

ANYWAY. strong rec. like at least 8.5/10. even if you're just in it for yibo (who is EXCELLENT in this, the whump scenes are incredible), or if you just want to ship shenlai, the payoff is strong in this.

Shen Yuan/Qingqiu: 8/10

Manages to differentiate his Binghe from og Binghe several times throughout the story, most notably in the punishment protocol chapter and the Bing-ge vs. Bing-mei extra. Points are deducted however because it takes him until he gropes Bing-ge’s chest to realize that this is not his Binghe

Luo Binghe: 6/10

Never realizes that his Shizun is a transmigrator. I will give him points though for eventually recognizing plant!zun

Wei Wuxian: 5/10 (?)

Not a lot of canon data for this one because Lan Wangji is never in disguise. Points deducted for Wei Wuxian not initially recognizing Lan Wangji at the Wen Discussion Conference. However Wei Wuxian does recognize Lan Wangji in literally every other appearance he makes so who knows really

Lan Wangji: 10/10

Patroclus himself. The only one of every character here to definitively recognize his beloved in a stranger’s body after one (1) meaningful interaction with him (yes he had the help of the object of his affections playing his secret boner song to summon Wen Ning but shhhh)

Xie Lian: 6/10

In Xie Lian’s defense, it’s not reasonable to expect a guy that’s been around for over 800 years to realize that all these one-eyed guys/very devoted ghosts he’s run into through the years are the same guy, especially since said guys have witnessed several of the most traumatic moments of his very long life. However, points can be given because Xie Lian does manage to recognize Hua Cheng in every form he takes after Xie Lian truly meets and falls in love with him

Hua Cheng: 9/10

Hua Cheng wants to claim Patroclus swag so bad but unfortunately I must deduct a point for him failing to recognize Fangxin Guoshi as Xie Lian until Lang Qianqiu identified him as such

My very brief thoughts on the books + ranking worst to best

In twelfth is Soulsmith. I know Lindon is a rookie sacred artist, and this is a whole new world for him but this is the only book where I got genuine second hand embarrassment. It was good on the first read but I hate rereading it. Has some really good moments and introduces Eithan and Gesha so I'll cut it some slack. And not only does it introduce Eithan, his moments are also sooo good.

(Although I think Soulsmith is the worst book, I still like it - there is no Cradle book I dislike. And it has the weirdest bloopers out of all of them lmao)

11: Skysworn. Ending felt kind of abrupt. Eithan breaking in with the others was hilarious. And the Eithan vs Longhook fight. Lindon loses an arm (because of Eithan) and then gets called a weapon to his face (also by Eithan). All Cops Are Bastards - also assholes. Mercy's here!

In tenth is Blackflame. I like Blackflame, it just isn't as good as the others. Yerin and Lindon bonding <3 Lindon getting arrested in the last chapter was hilarious

9: Unsouled. People think Unsouled is weak but it's NOT it's really good. Lindon has some really good lines: "I'm listening, not meditating on boyhood trauma." "They say even a dog remembers a beating." Etc.. The disrespect Lindon treats Deret with was CRAZY tho.

Overall, arc 1 is my bottom 4 but that's just because this is Lindon warming up a lil

8 is Uncrowed. I don't like tournaments sorry. All the stuff before the tournament with the training is the only reason it's not bottom four. The whole Lindon v. Pride thing is hilarious though

7: Ghostwater. I know this one is usually ranked higher in the fandom but I actually didn't like it allllll that much. Ziel was introduced! Lindon gets knocked out by fish meat, the cops get dunked on, etc. But eh.

In number six is Underlord! The fucking cannons aiahdosjs. Eithan is soooooo funny in this one ("Don't let it be said I stop my students from making the wrong decisions") I absolutely adored this book!! Charity and Dross were also really funny in this one. "You came looking for me" "If you face Wei Shi Lindon before underlord you will surely die." Ugh, it's so good. Plus Orthos teaching Lindon that it's okay to cry !!

In fifth is Reaper. Lindon sits on a throne!!!!! I really liked the beginning and the Ozriel reveal was really cool. Plus all the Eithan and Lindon bonding!!!!! Lindon breaking a table when he spoke with his dad was insanely funny - guy has anger issues. Also Orthos literally going "who's Lindon" to Redmoon as if it isn't well known that he is Lindon's contract partner was 💀💀

Fourth is Dreadgod. So many heists! Cunty Lindon ("Apologies but this looks like my land")!! Emriss is SUCH an icon. Lindon and Shen's confrontation! Emriss blatantly lying to the other monarchs. LARIAN!!!!! Plus Malice trolling Lindon and Justice wanting to just die because Malice is making him fuck with a really powerful Sage.

Now for the podium:

In third is Waybound. I love action and this one is FULL of fights. The Monarchs being assholes to each other gave me life. Also the Bleeding Pheonix calling Lindon "brother"!!!! Shen getting continually dunked on was so funny and Emriss and Cladia were EPIC! Plus Calling Storm DIES. Also Lindon's reunion with Eithan <3333333 (If you haven't already noticed, they are my fav duo)

Second place is Bloodline. This one is quite unpopular but I ADORE it! Lindon beating the shit out of Daji was GREAT!! Lindon's homecoming (GONE WRONG). ORTHOS AND LINDON REUNITE! KELSA AND LINDON REUNITE. Eithan trolls Jai Long and murders Rahm. There are so many good scenes. And Lindon's "walk"???

And, unsurprisingly, number one is Wintersteel. POINTS. RUBY! Pride and Eithan bet on whether Lindon is going to die 💀💀. Lindon ACCIDENTALLY becomes a Sage. The hunger arm is finally getting put to good use! There's a reason it's a fan fave.

ok one thing i am fascinated about re: zhu yilong ... what on earth is the pattern for his various pronounciations of "w"??? sometimes he says it like /w/ but sometimes he says it as /v/.

when he introduces himself as shen wei in guardian, he says /v/. usually when he says 我 wo ("i"), he says /w/. when he asks 为什么 wei shen me ("why") it depends, but idk on what.

just now (in 许你浮生若梦 ep 34), he said, 你问的这个问题— ni wen de zhe ge wen ti— roughly, "this question you're asking" or "your question". notice how that's the same word, 问 wen used twice there. (the first time it means "ask", the second time combined with 题 ti, it means "question".)

here's the thing. when he says the first 问, he pronounces it /wen/, but when he says the second 问 it becomes /ven/. i—???

Fic for November Prompts - Day 4 "Rainy" (and Day 5 as a free prompt)

"You didn't have to come down the mountain just for that." The being pointed to the umbrella. “Oh?” Kunlun couldn't believe the audacity of that ordinary thing to dismiss him and not even thank him for his concern. “What kind of thing are you that you don't even have a bit of courtesy?” ... Zhao Yunlan thought that there was something very wrong with him for being so allured by Wu Xie and his partner, by the relationship they had... and he didn't even know Shen Wei in person. He thought he had done a lot of ridiculous things in his life, but falling in love with a couple is the worst of them.

Zhao Yunlan is a Necromancer, looking for one last item for his most ambitious wish: to turn Shen Wei, a powerful spirit from the Underworld, made of smoke and dark energy, into something alive that can walk the earth. On his way, the last obstacle is the guardian of the tomb where the item is located. Once a tomb robber, Wu Xie was ordered to pay for his crimes by protecting the artifact, using his cheap and dubious sorcery, lest it ever fall into the wrong hands. From the Fic Summary Ask game. Jksjs thank you for the vibes song to reference. Here's a tidbit as a treat for ya:

Yunlan was so close. So close to what he'd been working towards for years. Shen Wei first appeared in his life with a natural chaos but also curiosity in how Zhao Yunlan controlled the essence needed to command the dead to speak once more or drive them to do his bidding. A smokey form almost devoid of details except for a pair of steady black eyes, somehow not lost within the smoke. Seeing such a youthful curiosity and energy with so much power of the Underworld that Yunlan had only seen amongst the highest of position, Zhao Yunlan couldn't just let Shen Wei go. The happiness he felt when Shen Wei seemed just as reluctant to leave was a surprise, but one that Yunlan welcomed into his usually solitary life. With the dream of one day Shen Wei being able to walk alongside him, for them to become powerful and happy together, was finally within reach. One last artifact, one that was capable of linking his own life force to Shen Wei if the ancient texts he found were to be believed. So close. Wu Xie wasn't always a solitary figure. He remembered a time with others staying by his side, but their faces were always just out of reach. The tomb made sure he remembered their voices, those desperate cries as they tried to save him from the curse he was now subject to after attempting to steal from the grave of a long passed and very powerful sorcerer. His magic had always been bare bones, a meager ability compared to many others, but it was all he had left now. The feeling of knowing his magic had been trained by someone that cared for him. Many someones that he could no longer remember. It was his only comfort in his forced isolation and mission to protect the tomb he once had tried to raid. At first he tried to fight the compulsion of the curse, refusing to raise a hand to those that followed in his footsteps to gather powerful artifacts and priceless relics. That's how he lost the memories of those he called family. The curse would take from him if he didn't do as it demanded. So he did his best, though he wasn't always successful because many brought powerful magic users of their own. Still, he hadn't failed. The curse hadn't driven him mad. The most precious artifact was still nestled deep within the tomb. One capable of connecting the lives of any two beings across any boundary. Wu Xie couldn't imagine the punishment the curse would have for him should he fail to protect it.

Just a little taste of a potentially longer story. Don't worry, this has been dropped into a doc for more writing later. Maybe a bit of a tease to just have these intro paragraphs, but you got me on the concept. I'm definitely drawn in and interested in writing more of this!

The crack twins fic maaaaay be a misnomer (whoops!) I just opened the document to refresh my memory and the working title on the document is "Seeing Double" while "Crack Twins Fic" is the filename. It's an outline of a 5+1 in a fix-it universe where Zhao Yunlan comes back but Zhang Shi is still in his old body... Shenanigans and mistaken identities ensue. So, no biological twins.

The mindreading fic is another 5+1 (yes, they're my comfort format) of 5 times Zhao Yunlan thinks that one of Shen Wei's powers is mind reading and the one time he realizes that it isn't.

Ononhkwise [Comic + Fic] - Wenzhou, Tian Ya Ke; the first time my jiejie and I collaborated on something together! I wrote the fic (heavily inspired by hair teachings my grandma shared with me) and jie turned my story into the most beautiful comic

No One Here is Dying! - Merthur, BBC Merlin; very light hearted, very fun, slightly crackish. Writing it reminded me how much fun writing can be

Ohkwarikó:wa - implied Weilan, Guardian (drama verse); I used a fic to share my favourite story about the stars, that's it. That's the plot. Also — lore about Shen Wei and bears

如影随形 (rúyǐngsuíxíng) - Weilan, Guardian (novel verse); I am forever emotional over novel Shen Wei's devotion to Kunlun and also the Shen San extra. This is a v short fic about that (but pls mind the tags for this one!)

Cereal, Crocs, and Colossal Mistakes - Weilan but mostly Shen Wei being bullied by his entire family, Guardian (drama verse); Essentially - every single person Shen Wei cares about loves crocs and they all collectively and lovingly bully him because they know Shen Wei does not like crocs at all
