Gerda Wegener was a Danish illustrator and painter, known for her exploration of gender and sexuality within her work. Many of her pieces were considered lesbian erotica during her life, though she herself never publicly identified as a lesbian. In fact, information about her life is quite limited. That said, many art historians and researchers believe that she herself may have been queer. Her work often depicted intimate scenes between women, androgyny, and gender variance. Her work, particularly her portraits, challenged social norms around gender and sexuality, and celebrated the beauty in that diversity.

Wegener is especially recognized for her portraits. One of her favorite subjects was her wife and fellow artist, Lili Elbe, who she often painted before Elbe's transition. In addition to her technical skills, Wegener was able to capture a sense of fluidity and sensuality that offered a unique perspective—one that was heavily discouraged at the time.
