" The Weedy Scorpionfish " // © David Vazquez Farrus
" The Weedy Scorpionfish is a master of disguise, blending perfectly into its surroundings. 🐠🌿 It’s also venomous and might yawn when a camera gets too close—possibly to intimidate or communicate! Master of Disguise 🥷 This fish is a camouflage expert, blending seamlessly into seaweed and algae. Its fleshy tentacles and irregular body shape make it nearly invisible in its natural habitat, which ranges from South Africa to the Coral Triangle. 🪸 Unique Movement 🦶 The Weedy Scorpionfish doesn’t swim like other fish. It lacks a swim bladder, so it crawls along the seafloor using its pectoral and pelvic fins, only swimming when necessary. 🌊🐾 This adds to its eerie appearance as it moves through the reefs. Venomous Predator 🕷️ As part of the scorpionfish family, this species is highly venomous. Sharp dorsal spines deliver its venom, making it a dangerous predator that hunts at night. 🌑🦐 It ambushes prey with a quick gape and suck motion—better to admire from afar! Mating Behavior 🤔 During mating, males perform an elaborate dance to attract females. 💃 After this, both the eggs and sperm are released into the water column, where fertilization occurs."

Their eyes are the same color as their skin (transparent?). So, it's a mystery if they can see. I like that.

The weedy scorpionfish or popeyed scorpionfish (Rhinopias frondosa) belongs to the family Scorpaenidae or also known as the Scorpionfishes family. It can vary considerably in color as well as appendages depending on its environment. Specimens found in rocky, algae rich waters are covered in weed-like appendages, whereas specimens found in deeper soft-bottomed waters with soft corals and sponges have fewer appendages. Color can range vastly from dark red and purple to yellow and lavender. The variations differ so vastly that the specimens are often misidentified between this species and two related species, Rhinopias aphanes and Rhinopias eschmeyeri.
The weedy scorpionfish lives in the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific Ocean, from Japan to Australia and from South Africa to the Caroline Islands. They are found in depths ranging from 13 to 90 meters.

Weedy scorpionfish (Rhinopias frondosa)
Rhinopias frondosa is a benthic marine fish which belongs to the family Scorpaenidae or also known as the Scorpionfishes family. The weedy scorpionfish has a highly compressed body, can reach a maximum length of 23 cm, and can vary considerably in color as well as appendages depending on its environment. Specimens found in rocky, algae rich waters are covered in weed-like appendages, whereas specimens found in deeper soft-bottomed waters with soft corals and sponges have fewer appendages. Color can range vastly from dark red and purple to yellow and lavender. The weedy scorpionfish lives in the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific Ocean, from Japan to Australia and from South Africa to the Caroline Islands. They are found in depths ranging from 13 to 90 meters.Like most Scorpaenidae, weedy scorpionfish are mostly nocturnal ambush hunters, using their camouflage to prey on unsuspecting fish and invertebrates. They rarely swim, but rather move along the bottom propelling themselves with their fins.

Animal Crossing Fish - Explained #208
Brought to you by a marine biologist who’s a bit broken...
CLICK HERE FOR THE AC FISH EXPLAINED MASTERPOST!
If you saw my update last weekend, I went and broke my back somehow, and I’m sure my job going out on the water had something to do with it. Being a marine biologist is fun but it’s not a cushy job, especially if you’re going out and doing field work. So, a combination of lifting heavy equipment and animals and acting like I’m still a spritely, young spring chicken did me in. So, that explains why there were no fish explained posts last weekend, though I’m trying really hard to at least do 2 or 3 a week on the weekends for something that looks like a schedule. So, here I go again - this time, we’ll talk about the Weedy Stingfish.
Tumblr media
The Weedy Stingfish debuted in AC Pocket Camp this March (2022) for Fishing Tourney 48 that featured succulent items as prizes. I love the theming here - both succulents (which include cactus) and the stingfish have sharp spines. The difference here is that, though getting pricked by a cactus sucks, getting pricked by the fish sucks twice as much because it’s venomous as well!
The large bony fish Family called Scorpaenidae includes very many species (some 454 in total) of prickly, spikey, and often venomous fish. When it comes to defense, these fish pack a punch! I mean, whoever named Scorpaenidae was really onto something, naming them after the equally prickly and venomous scorpions. Many of them are also masters of disguise, with complicated speckling patterns that allow them to hide motionless among corals and rocky habitat. Within this family are the Scorpaeninae, a subfamily that includes the traditional “true” scorpion fish and the lionfish - like the luna lionfish and red lionfish we have covered before. That also makes those fish the weedy’s closest relatives in AC so far, being a true scorpionfish in Tribe Scorpaenini. It’s scientific name is Scorpaenopsis cirrosa.
Tumblr media
Picture from FishBase. I’m not sure ACPC could have really captured the complicated patterning on this guy, so I think they made a great effort. They also come in a bunch of different colors besides this pinkish-red color.
These fish are native to coastal waters around Asia and south to Australia. Their hunting strategy is just about the same as their strategy to avoid predators - depend upon that camouflage and wait for prey to come by and predators to swim away. Unfortunately, they are so good at hiding and remaining motionless that people also have a hard time seeing them and accidently step on them which is incredibly painful. Although it won’t kill you, I hear you’ll wish it did.
And there you have it! Fascinating stuff, no?
