#wildlifewednesday I pillaged this picture from my sister's Instagram... It's my nephew and his dziadzia (my dad). My dad is showing how, if he's ever so gentle, the birds will eat out of his hand. He's a quick study. She has another shot of him with a bird in his hand. 🦎🦎 #wildlifewednesday 🦎🦎 Red Backed Salamander... classified as “least concern” for once. We found two of these critters while working through some spring clean ups in North York just the other day. What joy! They are mainly terrestrial and like living low to the ground, under rocks, logs and other debris. Be mindful of them while working through your gardens this spring. They are just beginning to come up from hibernation. Don’t cultivate. It isn’t necessary. And leave some wet leaf litter behind for them to burrow into. They’re still sleepy... . . . . 🐢🦎 #wildlifewednesday 🦎🐢 Galápagos Sea Iguanas, named so for their unique ability to forage for food in the sea, primarily algae. This is an uncommon and almost exclusive talent not displayed in other modern reptiles. My best friend and habitual traveler @pearse87 has been lounging ocean side with these dinosaurs for several days. I’m not particularly interested in iguanas. But like all my other wildlife posts, I’m always excited to see animals being animals where animals live. Seeing an iguana in it’s own habitat would suddenly spark a curiosity in me about iguanas and their environment as a whole. Curiosity drives discovery... . . . . #wildlifewednesday I am told by a credible source that this is a Luna Moth...possibly a male. It happened to be sun bathing in the yard here at the CSL Group head office a few days ago. Sarah used to work at a butterfly conservatory down in the Caribbean. I had to ask her what this was. She proceeded to drop some knowledge. This moth is one of the latgest in North America with a wingspan of up to 114mm. This one was the almost the length of my hand. They feed on Birch, Willow, and Sumac...all of which we have at the office. Isn't it beautiful. #wildlifewednesday #wildlifephotography #wildlife #thevalueofnature #developmentthroughdiscovery #wednesdaydiscoveryjournal #neverstopexploring #getoutside #nature #environment #conservation #whyilandscape #getoutside #workoutside #lunamoth #cslgroup #csl_ancaster (at CSL Group Ltd)

#wildlifewednesday It should be made known that my buddy's phone died for this shot. I don't know if that means his battery died or his whole phone was lost. Nevertheless, great shot of a beautiful stingray. These creatures are so gentle and graceful. I saw a few myself while in the BVI. Unfortunately I was unable to get any pictures this nice. . . . . We returned last night from our Disney Vacation. We have some withdrawal so I might post more trip photos. Like this -> On our last night on resort property we dined at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort located on the southern shore of the Seven Seas Lagoon, and one of the first two on-site hotels which opened in 1971. This resort has a few of our favourite a spots - 'Ohana and Trader Sam's Grog Grotto. I found this critter while waiting for our dining reservation at 'Ohana. . . . . This #wildlifewednesday is a #regram from @borealis_grille, a fantastic and colourful shot of a Bumble enjoying the Dark Opal Basil from their patio planters. During each of my visits this season - either to tidy up the plants or to enjoy a #pintandapound - the planters consistently displayed a flurry of activity like this. Borealis had created a few signature cocktails this season using ingredients found in their Gardens. If it wasn't for the bees maybe they wouldn't have been able to make so many. #foodforthought. I remain really intrigued by bees. I've added two bee baths to my own garden at home (more on those later). . . . . I had to look this one up. This is what I found - "Misumena vatia (Goldenrod Crab Spider)Summary This spider is an ambush hunter, lying patiently in wait on flowers for an insect to come within striking range. Adult females may be overall yellow or white, with the ability to change back and forth. This species can conquer surprisingly large prey like bees and butterflies." This blurb was taken from http://www.spiders.us/species/filter/ontario/ When you stop and smell the flowers these are the things you sometimes find. And as much as I've grown to really like bees you have to admit that this is a pretty cool discovery. . . . . I've missed an entire week. What happened? Busy, I guess. It's already the middle of July but that doesn't mean we've slowed down. We are working hard on landscape enhancements and other property improvements for our many clients. So, it's #wildlifewednesday again. This grey tree frog my companion for a few days while I completed a repointing project in Ancaster. The homeowners had custom built their home along a wooded gorge and the entire landscape (front and back) was clad in flagstone. After years of neglect they decided to do a thorough rejuvenation. Our crew replaced lighting and plant material for a couple days. After which I was left to repair all the flagstone joints every surface. Repointing is when you grind out deteriorating or broken mortar joints and trowel in new product. This took me days. And it looked sharp at the end. While working around the pool I found this guy, stiff as a rock. I said, "hey guy, what do you think I should do about this masonry project?" He said... "brrrrickit!" . . . . For this week's #wildlifewednesday I am diverting from my usual discovery related content with accompanying dialogue and instead posting this...King Louie and Baloo the Bear. We are on a 75 day count down for #TheBrabolsDisneyAdventure so I really couldn't post about anything else. . . . ...Wait! I can make the connection - At its core, Animal Kingdom is a land of discovery with layers upon layers of inflective detail. It's a park that encourages exploration and development through physical interactions with the environment, the subtext of which is to bring light to environmental issues and to support sustainable issues and the protection of wildlife. But also this just King Louie, @sdabols, Baloo and I goofing around. Stay tuned for future #wildlifewednesday posts as they relate to our up coming trip. #wildlifewednesday #wildlifephotography #wildlife #thevalueofnature #developmentthroughdiscovery #wednesdaydiscoveryjournal #neverstopexploring #getoutside #nature #environment #conservation #animalkingdom #waltdisneyworld #wdw #disney #junglebook #kinglouie #kingoftheswingers #baloo #bearnecessities

I was standing under a Linden tree here at the shop and it was just swarming with different bees bouncing around from flower to flower. Watching closely I could see their tongue unfurl to reach for the nectar. I understand the importance of bees but I could never say I was a "bee guy". After 2 #wildlifewednesday posts about bees...back to back...I kind of want to know more about bees. How could you not? Look at him. Maybe i'll start Bee Keeping. . . . . I realise I've missed Pollinator Week. Regardless, here is a bumblebee doing his thing for #wildlifewednesday. The yellow flowers of this Staghorn Sumac - Rhus typhina - give way to red, berries...so long as they've been pollinated. These berries are edible and are often used in sweet and tarty drinks. Because of bees (amoung other contributing pollinators) these sumacs bear fruit naturally in the wild. Without them they would not. The pollen from the male needs to be carried over to the seed of the female by some means. The pollen easily sticks I to a bee as it nibbles on the sweet nectar. If you are planting Sumac at home be sure to get both the female and male counterparts. #savethebees #pollinators #bees #bumblebee #wildlifewednesday #wildlifephotography #wildlife #thevalueofnature #developmentthroughdiscovery #wednesdaydiscoveryjournal #neverstopexploring #getoutside #nature #environment #conservation #plantlife #plantsofinstagram

#wildlifewednesday This poor little critter was clipped by a piece of equipment the maintenance team. This was while I was with my previous employer. I was on the property doing some assessment for a future project. Not sure what to do here. Of course the team members were devastated but sometimes this happens. I'm certainly guilty of it myself. When your landscape provider comes on to the property they bring a lot of equipment. Their scope of work is big, they do their job and when they are done your property looks great...on the surface. On another level it is possible they caused damage. So what do we do? Maybe we change our approach. Maintenance Crews cut grass and Construction Crews excavate and build but at the core we work in environments that are shared -not just between people but with...well, bunnies. In this instance we decided we couldn't leave this bunny here. It had a gash on its neck and piece out of its ear. I patched it up and brought it back to our yard. It was then cared for by one of the other teams members (I believe with advice from the grca) and released. #wildlifewednesday #thevalueofnature #developmentthroughdiscovery #wednesdaydiscoveryjournal #neverstopexploring #wildlifewednesday #getoutside #nature #environment #conservation #groundsmanagement #turfcare #landscapemaintenance #landscaping #landscapepro #horticulture
