“I know some say they chose ugly hats because they were jealous. But I think they went over the top because it was the most important wedding of the century yet, so they thought they had to bring some extravagance. Also looking back, their outfits actually matched the time and they also were not the biggest fashion girlies.”

This is a profound misremembering, misunderstanding, lavk of knowledge of the fashion landscape around this time in the UK especially around hats.

In the 00s, UK went hat/ fascinator crazy. Leading the chargecwas uber stulist Isabella Blow who saw no reason to dress for the day without adding a sculptural, architectural hat. Day and night.

Her hats were artworks created for her by Philip Tracey who she’d discovered and persuaded to work with her other protege Alexander McQueen. Between them, hats/ fascinators design in the UK became fun, irreverent, sculptural and not just for Ascot. Other hat designers followed suit though perhaps not to the same extreme degree as McQueen and Tracey or Stephen Jones.

Some of Isabella’s hats:

Sidenote: a friend of mine was an intern at the Sunday times style section at a time when they also employed Isabella and said it was amazing to see her waltz in wearing fairly normal clothing, but always with a fabulous, sculptural hat.

Of the royal women, Beatrice and Sophie dove into this hat/ fascinator trend though they mainly stuck to much more classic takes on a trend. Of the two, Beatrice was the more adventurous and showed up at royal events and weddings in much more Isabella hats than Sophie eg

You can see that even Kate’s hats in that 2006 - 2011 era were more sculptural and interesting than they are now. She, like Sophie, stuck to more classic than avant garde takes on the trend, but you can see still see it in the hats she wore then.

By the royal wedding, Isabella Blow had been dead 3yrs, but her influence was still felt. Infact afew of the wedding guests at WK’s wedding were wearing sculptural hats eg

All this to say that in the fashion world in the UK at this time, Beatrice’s hat wasn’t unusual or bizarre, and even the most restrained hat designers of the time had incorporated elements of sculputure in their designs for the UK market.

However, the global public reaction to Beatrice’s homage to Isabella blow hat was so extreme that it scared the movement back to basics. Tracey put out a statement which showed his hurt at public reception it because he was creating his usual sculptural hat and was thrilled that hevwas doing it for a royal wedding.

Sadly, the madhatter trend went back into the closet and without someone as fearless as Isabella and McQueen to push the envelope as far as fashion/ hats as artwork, we are jow experiencing boring hats, boring fashion and people more willing to buy ‘brands’ rather than fashion.

I don’t think we’ll ever see this trend again.

But it’s also sad that her choice of hat led people to create the rumour that Beatrice deliberately wore an ‘ugly’ hat to WK’s wedding because of animosity and jealousy.

Beatrice (and all the royal ladies) hasn’t worn an interesting hat since then. Their ascot hats are equally safely boring nowdays. It would have bern interesting to see what they wore now, if they and Tracey/ Stephen Jones and all the sculptural hat designers of old had stuck to their guns and continued with it.

HAPPY 12TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY TO THE PRINCE AND PRINCESS OF WALES!

HRH Prince William Arthur Philip Louis and Miss. Catherine Elizabeth Middleton married in a religious ceremony on 29 April 2011 at Westminster Abbey in London.

Will and Cat were married by the Archbishop of Canterbury, while the Dean of Windsor conducted the ceremony and the Bishop of London gave the address.

Catherine wore a dress by Surah Burton of Alexander McQueen. The Royal School of Needlework's hand-made lace applique for the bodice and skirt incorporated the rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock. She was lent the Cartier Scroll Tiara by her grandmother-in-law and gifted a pair of diamond earrings featuring acorns from Robinson Pelham by her parents for the special day. The bridal bouquet featured myrtle, lily-of-the-valley, sweet William, ivy, and hyacinth.

William doned on the red tunic of the Colonel of the Irish Guards uniform with a forage cap bearing the Irish Guards insignia and motto, "Quis Separabit?. He wore the Order of the Garter Star and Blue Riband to which his RAF Wings & Golden Jubilee Medal were fastened.

Upon their wedding they were conferred upon the titles of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Earl & Countess of Strathearn and Baron and Lady Carrickfergus by Queen Elizabeth II.

Following the ceremony in true fairytale fashion, the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge travelled in the 1902 State Landau in a horse-drawn carriage procession to Buckingham Palace. They appeared on the Palace Balcony for a RAF Flypast and shared TWO KISSES to the delight of the crowd gathered below and my 11 year old self's.

The official wedding photos of the couple with their families and wedding party were taken by Hugo Burnand in the throne room of Buckingham Palace.

A Reception for the couple and their guests was hosted at Buckingham Palace by The Queen while the then Prince of Wales hosted a further private dinner. The couple'a guests had two wedding cakes to choose from - a multi-tiered traditional fruit cake crafted by Fiona Cairns & William's favourite chocolate biscuit cake.

William and Catherine drove to Clarence House following the lunchtime reception in a blue, two seat Aston Martin DB6 Volante which was originally a 21st birthday gift to the then Prince of Wales by the Queen.

William and Catherine have three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. The family of five they divide time between their official residence at Kensington Palace in London and their two private residences Amner Hall in Norfolk & Adelaide Cottage in Windsor.

They became The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay after King Charles III's accession to the throne and were made The Prince and Princess of Wales by him on 9 September 2022.

As well as undertaking royal duties in support of The King, both in the UK and overseas, The Prince and Princess devote their time to supporting a number of charitable causes and organisations with some of their key areas of interest being Early Childhood Development, Mental Health, Conservation, Arts, Sports etc.

So... could we see a glimpse of baby Sophie turning 4 years old in France? Her bossing shit up at her birthday party?

I'm pretty sure the photo is of Julia Berolzheimer, not 100% sure but I'll look into it haha

France was home for Esme, it is the place she felt comfortable but in recent years that shift had started to move to Hampshire with Richard and their tiny princess Sophie.

Esme had begged Richard to come to France to celebrate their daughter’s birthday and have a little pre-wedding celebration with her family and friends in France that weren’t able to make the wedding.

Reims was the place Sophie had been born, it had been a hard birth for Esme especially being by herself with only her mother for company, Richard back in the UK with no idea Sophie had been born.

But this was in the past, their future was set in front of them and they’d marry two weeks after their princess’ birthday and the entire family had made their way to France for a big celebration.

“Sophie ma petit… where are you?” Esme called out looking for her newly 4 year old daughter. Sophie was quite adept at hiding but whenever Esme called for her, she’d giggle.

She heard the tiny giggle coming from one of the cupboards and a rustling of a bag “Sophia Ma Petit… if you have the crisps that are for your party, Mama is going to be very upset”

“But MAMA Papa gimmed them!” Sophie’s little voice came, muffled with the sound of crunching.

“Sophie!” came Richard’s voice entering the kitchen as he looked at his soon to be wife who had an amused look on her face “it was supposed to be our little secret!” he said opening the cupboard and lifting his little girl from the cupboard she’d begged to be let to hide in.

“But Papa you said lying is naughty!” Sophie said, crumbs covering her entire body as she gave her Papa a toothy grin.

Richard sighed as Esme chuckled and walked over to her daughter “Oh mon amour she has you there” Esme grinned before seeing the state of her daughter.

“Oh Sophie… everyone will be here soon and you have crisps in your hair… how?”

Sophie decided to show her Mama how by putting the crisps packet back on her head “it’s a crown for princess Sophie”

Richard burst into laughter and Esme groaned “I swear, the children at nursery are such a bad influence on you ma petite”

“I think the birthday princess needs to have a bath before all her guests arrive”

“Noooooo no bath’s on my birthday!” Sophie squirmed in her father’s arms

“Sophie you need a bath before you can have cake” Esme said as she took her wriggling daughter.

“NO BATHS” Sophie yelled as she burst into tears “waters hurts my eyes” she said through great big sobs

“Mama will be very careful ma petite and if you are good Mama has a special surprise for you after your bath” Esme said placatingly.

Sophie sniffled and pouted sadly but let her mama carry her off and bathe her. Sophie liked that her mama managed to make the water all bubbly and let her wear a bubble beard and crown whilst she was having her hair washed.

Sophie was wearing her little bubble beard and crown whilst Esme dashed out of the room to get the surprise for Sophie.

Sophie was splashing in the water happily with her toys ducks as she was quacking and giggling. Esme smiled at the noises coming from the bathroom as she grabbed the dress that was hanging up, and her own and dashed back into the bathroom “so since you’ve been a big brave girl Ma petite… Mama got you a special birthday party dress” Esme smiled brightly as her little girl stared at her, her little green eyes alight with happiness.

“A pretty dress like Mama???” Sophie squeaked

Esme showed Sophie the little Silvery grey dress and showed her own in a similar shade with flowers on “just like mama” Esme said

Sophie screamed excitedly and burst into happy tears “BESTEST DAY EVVVVER” she sniffled

“Are you going to let Mama wash and dry your hair without sad tears” Esme said

“If i can wear the dress! Yes!” Sophie squealed happily with her happy tears in her eyes and didn’t complain at all as her Mama washed her hair and even sat still as Esme combed her hair once she was out of the bath.

She sat very still whilst Esme put her hair into two plaits and beamed toothily as her dress was put on and she started spinning happily on the spot giggling. “Princess Sophie!”

Richard knocked on their bedroom door “everyone is here my love and waiting for the birthday princess and her Queen” he grinned brightly.

Esme chuckled “we’re just ready now mon amour” she smiled as Richard opened the door.

He gasped when he saw Sophie “well look at you all grown up and looking like Mama!”

“I match Mama!” sophie said with a bright toothy grin on her face.

“I can see, do you want to walk down or does the princess want a carry?” he asked

“I can walk!” Sophie beamed and rather than walk she skipped her way downstairs into the garden. Because the weather was so lovely they had decided to have the party and celebration in the garden.

“Can Papa take some photos of Sophie?” Richard asked as he held the camera up.

Sophie nodded and permitted her father exactly two pictures before she turned around “I can hear Mamaw and Nonna!!!” she squealed excitedly “and Ali!!!!!” she said, turning around quickly and pointing towards the path that led to the back garden just as Richard snapped one last photo.

12/12/2017: Harry and his friends kill 15 boars during German hunting trip (Meghan's not happy). Harry and Meghan take credit for William and Kate showing a little PDA on an engagement, while Meghan merches her parka. Later, William and Harry attend the Star Wars premiere.
