it’s been a while since I’ve used this art style, but why not use a nostalgic style for a nostalgic comic :)
I cannot believe it’s been four years since the first episode of this comic dropped. It really still feels like yesterday for me.
Even if anyone who showed their support for this comic has long since moved onto other things (I wouldn’t blame you either after 4 years 💀), I just wanted to genuinely express how much I appreciate the support and love this dumb lil mini comic was given back in the day. Yall seriously made our entire year with your support and I’ll never forget that. And I’ll never stop having a special place in my heart for these babes either.
happy anniversary, ORSOM. ❤️💛

^ I've read this Webtoon 3 times now, and it's STILL SO GOOD!! I'd recommend it for people who like a good Sci-fi/Action Story. (Also two male characters are in a relationship, and everyone else has a bit of chemistry with one another so... yeah. If you don't like LGBTQ+ stuff, don't read it.)
Ace: Your eyes are so pretty
Shifty: What? 👁👄👁
Ace: I said, get out of my way, Shitty!
———————
Boomer: Your eyes are so pretty
Brick: That’s because they’re always looking at you *wink*
Boomer: Aww, Babe~! 🥺
———————
Richie: Your eyes are so pretty
Bones: ....what do ya want, Sci-Fi?
Richie: Pleeease help me rehearse for my presentation tomorrow on alien eye genetics?
Bones: Sure *chuckles* all ya had to do was ask, Richie.
———————
Everyone: Your eyes are so pretty!
Buttons: *SQUEAK*
Everyone: I’VE ONLY KNOWN BUTTONS FOR ONE DAY AND IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO HER I WOULD KILL EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM AND THEN MYSELF 😤😤😡😡
Please read Rockababy by @junkmix aka @c2ndy2c1d on Webtoons!!! It’s so good and cute and honestly this is the most motivation I’ve ever had for a fandom lol

tfw when you're behind on ur webtoon, behind on ur fanfiction, haven't started the next Zelda comic, trying to make the deadline for a short story contest, finishing a script for a developing big project, updating your showreel, doing social media promotion, and somehow working/living life too...
umm yea I'm dying to bring you more zelda comics and fanfiction but they unfortunately gotta fight quite a few other things for my attention and energy 😂😭 it's like a gladiator arena in here I swear! best I can do is say that I AM chipping away at all of these things, but just... really slowly lol.

“Isekai Pongongnam”, a work that falls short of standards and a red pen correction for Naver
published Oct 17 2024
this article is originally in Korean and has been mtl and edited into English here. it’s not going to be 1:1 but the basic info should be there, if you see any discrepancies though lmk and I’ll edit it asap. thanks everyone for your continued help and understanding.
This article is not a critique of the controversial webtoon Isekai Pongpongnam. Critique, even when highly critical, involves reading between the lines to understand the context. Such a process is unnecessary—more accurately, impossible—when it comes to Isekai Pongpongnam. The webtoon recently passed the first round of Naver Webtoon’s 2024 Grand Contest and is now available on “Best Challenge.” As the title suggests, it actively utilizes the concepts of the “dishwashing theory” and “Pongpongnam,” which were popular around three years ago. Here’s the premise: Park Dong-soo, a 39-year-old man who has devoted himself to his family as a husband and father for 10 years, discovers his wife's affair and prepares for a divorce. Despite having grounds for divorce, he is devastated to learn that, after 10 years of marriage, they must split their assets 50/50. During the custody dispute, his wife self-harms and falsely accuses him of domestic violence, leading to his arrest. Overwhelmed with regret, Park attempts suicide and is transported to a parallel world.
So, what is there to critique about this story? The issue isn’t with the repetitive narrative patterns or the convenient use of a parallel world, like in other generic fantasy stories. The webtoon has been criticized for its misogynistic elements, with a boycott campaign against Naver Webtoon gaining traction on social media, especially on Twitter (now X). While I fully agree with this criticism, it’s not the only issue. The creator of Isekai Pongpongnam hasn’t actually done anything of substance. He hasn’t portrayed any meaningful representation, structured a coherent narrative, or even developed any characters.
The webtoon merely cobbles together and regurgitates misogynistic internet memes, including the term “Pongpongnam,” without any coherent structure. For example, in episode 2, a character from the parallel world reacts to Park's story, exclaiming, “A person who didn’t contribute to the assets just because they were married for a few years gets to take more than half? And the law even protects the cheater? That’s ridiculous! There’s no way a world without a proper system like that exists! If it did, it would’ve collapsed by now!” This line, which some have praised as a “refreshing statement” on Namu Wiki, merely echoes the grievances often found on male-dominated online communities. The setting of Dongtan as Park's hometown, often referred to as “Pongpong City” in discussions about “Pongpongnam,” the lawyer’s line about how “the law favors women too much,” and Park’s monologue about the police taking his wife’s consistent (but false) statements about domestic violence seriously—all these elements are simply recycled memes about male discrimination that have circulated online for years.
In reality, testimony is significant in legal cases, and the credibility of statements is empirically proven through consistency and non-contradiction. However, after the controversial 2018 conviction in the “Gomtang Restaurant” sexual harassment case, the concept of “consistency in statements” was derided as a tool that could turn innocence into guilt, forming a kind of “alternative fact” that continues to circulate in these communities. As of now, three episodes have been released, listing various events, but the creator of Isekai Pongpongnam hasn’t expressed any original ideas or insights. If there’s an actual author behind this webtoon, it isn’t the person named “Pongpong” (the actual pseudonym), but rather the communities like DC Inside, Ilbe, or Femco.
Therefore, Isekai Pongpongnam is not something that can be critiqued as a proper webtoon submission. Instead, it would be more appropriate to mark it up with a red pen. First, the title itself deserves a red line. In response to the controversy over misogyny, the creator claimed, “I do not incite hatred. This story was created based on advice from a divorce lawyer and is based on real events.” If that’s the case, it’s close to an admission that the title was chosen without much thought. While it’s certainly possible that there are real-life cases like Park Dong-soo’s, using such a specific term in the title positions the story within a context of misogyny.
The so-called “dishwashing theory,” which compares a marriage between a respectable man with a stable job and a woman with a promiscuous past to doing the dishes, isn’t an inductive theory but rather a baseless assertion aimed at justifying hatred toward women by creating an imaginary strawman. When the creator chose “Pongpongnam” instead of a more neutral title like “Divorced Man in Another World,” the work had already begun promoting hatred. Therefore, the creator should accept the criticism, not deflect it. The next red line goes to Park Dong-soo’s line about doing “almost all the housework, childcare, and earning money.” The webtoon portrays him as a perfect husband to highlight his wife's wrongdoing. However, the story shows him often away on long-distance business trips, nearly missing holidays with his family, which contradicts his claims of doing most of the childcare.
Similarly, the line about the wife “spending hundreds of dollars a month or overspending while managing finances” also deserves a red line because it conflicts with Park's earlier statement about doing most of the household work. How much of the household chores did this man, who was indifferent to household finances, actually think he was doing? The extent likely matches the narrow range of imagination from a creator who relies on male-dominated online communities and is oblivious to reality.
If this webtoon were a learning material, every line and scene would be marked with red, scoring zero. It mindlessly parrots misogynistic community slang, but in trying to recreate an entire world from such language, contradictions arise at every turn. The one transported to a parallel world isn’t Park Dong-soo but the webtoon’s own logic. Thus, the real target of this critique is not Isekai Pongpongnam itself, but Naver Webtoon for allowing it to pass the first round of screening.
In a Money Today article, a Naver representative said, “There are basic guidelines regarding issues like explicit content or violence. Since no guideline violations were found, it passed the first round.” In other words, despite past controversies over misogyny in webtoons like The Sound of Heart and True Education and the resulting criticisms and revisions, Naver has admitted it lacks guidelines to screen out discriminatory or hateful language targeting specific groups.
The creator of Isekai Pongpongnam argues that the term “dishwashing” is derived from stock trading rather than something as egregious as group rape, trying to suggest that terms like “dishwashing theory” and “Pongpongnam” aren’t expressions of hate. However, the origin of the term is secondary (though not unimportant). When a marriage with a supposedly “promiscuous” woman is likened to dishwashing, the woman is portrayed as something dirty and detestable. Furthermore, the idea that such a marriage is a losing deal disregards women’s contributions to household labor, labeling them as freeloaders. It’s not as though these terms are secretly trending—they were already highly controversial three years ago, with their problematic nature well-documented. How powerless and irresponsible is a guideline that fails to filter out hate speech and discriminatory discourse?

In July, it was announced that one of my favorite manhwa is getting an anime adaptation — I'm talking about Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint, also known simply as Omniscient Reader. I'm really hyped for the anime version and can't wait for it to come out. While there's no release date yet, I thought I'd help shorten the wait by introducing you to the webtoon. I hope I can get you excited about the story! Maybe after this, you'll want to check out the manhwa on Webtoon, or you'll be just as eager for the anime as I am.
Omniscient Reader originally began as a South Korean web novel written by Sing Shong, which concluded in 2020. The manhwa adaptation by UMI and Sleepy-C started the same year. The story is also being adapted into five live-action movies, set to be released in 2025.

Now, what is this webtoon about?
It starts with Dokja, a contract office worker whose hobby is reading web novels. He’s particularly fond of a novel called Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse (TWSA for short). However, the novel is far from popular — an understatement, really. It’s so long-running that every reader except Dokja has lost interest in it; he’s the only one still reading and following it. With 3,149 episodes, it's insanely long for a web novel — Dokja needed 10 years to reach the final episode.
Now, while sitting in the subway, Dokja finally finishes the epilogue of his favorite web novel. Flustered by the ending, he’s staring at his phone when a colleague from work, Sangah, the most popular girl in the office, strikes up a friendly conversation with him. As they chat, Dokja reflects on his life and how it hasn’t been going particularly well.
Tumblr media
Since TWSA accompanied him through many tough times, starting from 8th grade, Dokja feels compelled to thank the author now that the novel is finished. He decides to leave a comment, and to his surprise, the author responds. The author informs him that the novel will become paid content at 7 p.m. that day and sends Dokja a copy of the entire novel as a token of appreciation for his loyalty.
It's almost 7 p.m., and Dokja is still on the subway when something unexpected happens. The subway makes an emergency stop, the lights go out, and a strange fluffy creature with two small horns appears! Dokja can’t believe his eyes — it’s a Dokkaebi, just like in the novel TWSA!
Tumblr media
In that moment, the genre of Dokja’s life shifted to fiction, and he was the only one who knew what would happen in the following scenarios.
The novel had become reality. Not only did the Dokkaebis appear, but also the characters from the novel, along with monsters, constellations, and scenarios. It was all intertwined with the real world. At first, no one knew what had happened or what to do, but people had to learn quickly and accept the new reality if they wanted to survive.
Tumblr media
The setting of TWSA is a world where so-called constellations exist. These beings have been immortalized in human history, ranging from mythic heroes and great sages to mythological creatures, spirits, and ancient gods. They typically don’t interact directly with humans. Instead, they find enjoyment in watching humans struggle through scenarios. These scenarios are challenges that act as obstacles to be overcome in order to progress toward the end of all scenarios, often posing deadly risks and costing many lives.
The Dokkaebi oversee the scenarios, acting as moderators and channel owners of the so-called Star Stream. On this stream, the constellations can watch humans compete in the scenarios. They also have the option to donate coins, send short messages to the contestants, and sponsor participants. A participant can have only one sponsor, gaining some of their sponsor's stigma. For example, the protagonist of TWSA, Yoo Joonghyuk, has the ability to regress: when he’s killed, he's sent back in time and starts over from the beginning of the scenarios. Kind of a cheat ability if you ask me.
Tumblr media
The story unfolds into a thrilling fictional action-adventure where Dokja’s life is constantly on the line. He will meet people from both the real world and the novel whom he’ll come to call friends. Together, they challenge the scenarios and strive to reach the end.
Throughout it all, the question looms: How did the novel become reality? Is Dokja a part of it now, or is he still just a reader? His skill, Fourth Wall, suggests he’s a reader, but what happens when this wall begins to shake? If you want to find out, check out Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint yourself!

TEAM DIGITAL ART CONTEST - ARTISTS OF THE APOCALYPSE
This challenge is here to connect artists and grow our art skills! In the future, it may change to OC’s as an option as well as yourselves or profile pictures!
Every time we do this, there will be a new theme! This contest will most likely be held every year to six months, depending on how this one goes!
This contest started local to a fandom for a Webtoon called Cinderella Boy, but now it’s open to all artists across the internet. The top three teams of 15 people or less will receive one of three creative projects as prizes.
1st Place 🥇 : A choice of either: A SHORT comic about any of the teams survival/team member’s OC’s survival in this apocalypse (Maximum 25 Panels, the team can write the script or I can) OR a longer short story about any team’s members in this apocalypse. 3k-7k, also written by me
2nd Place 🥈: Choice of either: 1. Short story of any team surviving the apocalypse, (1.5k to 2.5k words) OR 2. Low detail art of five OC’s/Characters/People on any team, colored (Waist Up) OR 3. SHORT mini comic! (Maximum 10 panels, script can be me or the team)
3rd Place 🥉: 10 Characters/People/OC’s drawn bust up, colored
Here's how it works after you join the server:
Welcome to the bunker!
It's the end of the world, discord bots have Infiltrated every corner of technology, and now? They're turning on us. They've Infiltrated everything from banks to nukes, but users from all different situations across the world somehow got together- In three bunkers.
Now, it's your turn to make the art to save our spirits! Teams of each bunker will win different prizes, but only one will survive. Here's how the contest works!
1. You go to "Sign Up" channel under "Bunker Contest! and say something along the lines of, "I want to sign up." (DM me instead if you want to be a judge I'm @notaluma)
2. I assign you all to three random teams, and every team gets assigned a private chat on the server, and a magma
3. Each team will be secretly assigned an opposing one, and each member assigned a secret opposing member of that team to draw! You cannot share with anyone but your team who your drawing, which means you don't know who's drawing you!
If you want yourself IRL to be drawn, there will be a channel to post pictures of yourself for whoever is drawing you. Otherwise, it will just be profile pictures.
Your own drawings of yourself works too, but people are welcome to do their own styles
4. Each team will receive a blank bunker background on magma, you will then plan out together where each drawing will go, and what they'll be doing. Example:
"I want Maneater313 to be eating chips with ShakeltOnBabe in this spot."
5. You draw your person, onto the canvas as discussed.
6. Judging! Your team's final drawings will be ranked by each judge on a scale of one to five in three categories:
1. Fun-ness to look at and experience
2. Teamwork and Creative Flow/Cohesion
3. Creativity
7. I tell each team that died how they did. (Non-Graphic, pretty much all jokes)
Everyone has about three more hours to set up, good luck!

The state of the arts: 2024 édition
What I've been up to this year.
Writing
Tumblr media
160 000 words written this year, according to Scribbook. It ain't bad.
Finished the story about Urbain (tentatively called "Le voleur et les ombres"
Finished the long short story/novella (?) "Les yeux d'Alexander Black"
Did 90% of the first draft of the Polidori story "This old soulless body"
Drawing
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
36 drawings this year, though I'm not really happy with most of them...I want to get better at art but I feel like I'm stuck :c I'll brush myself off and try again harder in 2025!
Comicbooking
Tumblr media Tumblr media
133 pages of my webcomic sequel! Try as I might, I could not finish it this year. 2025 will see the end of it.
I also started uploading the first one on Webtoon!
Animating
Tumblr media
I did do an AMV set to "The Winner takes it all" that I really need to upload one day. I just need to correct one frame and of course that means procrastinating for MONTHS.
Publishing
Arg. Well...I sent my manuscripts to a lot of publishing houses (20? 25?), entered two contests (one for a novel and one for a short story), and went to the Imaginales speed-editing author-publisher meeting...and maybe abused a bit of my privileges as a bookseller, but I won't go into details here. Suffice to say: nothing. For now.
What I plan to do in 2025
Edit the short story mentioned above
Do the second draft of the novel
Finish the comic
Start writing another novel set in the 19th century. What can I say, I love doing endless research (and read Balzac)
Go to more conventions to try and network my way to the publishing world. It is a long, harsh road but I am persistent.
Getting better at art. See the comment above.

Just a few of the TONS of amazing comments from the 2020 Webtoon Short Story Contest - HEART Anthology, where Dungeons & Dentists made its first debut. 💖💚💖💚💖
The contest itself garnered over 5,000 entries internationally, all of which were absolutely amazing. I’m still friends with a few of my fellow contestants from back then! Dungeons & Dentists struck bronze and the entry itself is still up, though plenty of the story has changed and grown since then. I’m still so grateful to every reader who took the time to like, comment, and subscribe on those episodes, as that was absolutely pivotal to its success.
Thank you. Each and every one of you have a place in my heart. You are why creators like me have a chance at getting out there; why I get to do exactly what I’ve wanted to do since I was 3 or 4 years old.
Thank you and I love you. I hope you enjoy my series, which comes out TODAY(11.8.2023) @ 5PM!!!!!!! 💖💚💖💚💖

I appeared on national news with my horse when I was in college. I have never had a drop of alcohol, nor do i have any interest in drinking ever. Likewise, I have never done an drug (outside of prescription stuff, naturally). I saw Vanilla Ice live at a food festival a few years back (yes, he did Ice Ice Baby and the ninja turtles theme song). I'll stop there I guess lol

4, 8? I’m a little shy, uh, 11? <:3
4. Favourite things to draw?
the expected answer: little gay scenarios or gestures. BL or GL, sometimes even het. I love dealing with intimacy and relationship dynamic even if that intimacy is just about eyes following or physical proximity
the unexpected answer: when i'm out of ideas my go-to is always girls. love drawing girls. happy or sad or somewhere in between.. girls are the best
8. What do you like most about your own work?
I've been pretty proud of my character-analysis abilities, and recently I've gotten more self confident seeing I can carry little self "projects" to the end- which were animatics or my roommate stenny comic, a short original comic I just did and a few years ago also my webtoon contest entry. with every little project I finish I feel more "invincible" with regards to my art and my abilities and it gives me confidence and pride!
11. Favorite comment you’ve ever recieved on your work?
okay not to be gay but my absolute favorite commentator is @basu-shokikita. whenever I show her one of my comics and it moves her I'm satisfied my point had gotten across and managed to touch something and I wasn't just my inner-brain cringe. or when she gives me feedback it always serves to make my comics/drawings better so I love those too.
other than that, I love when people tell me in their comments what they loved about it, or get into the story of what I drew and maybe ask questions or wonder where it might go etc. I'm always so happy to get positive comments (even the crying tags on my sadder things make me smile), but my favorite is when someone makes me talk with them somehow, if that makes sense? I want my art to be engaging and i want people to have something to say about it, that makes me feel that it was a success

A world Map
Hello, I am Empress Kae. I am an artist, rigger, vtuber, and soon to be webtoon artist and author. I asked my audience what they would like to see first before the release of the webtoon. The wanted some world building so I decided to give you the most scuffed map possible. This is will a be a simplified version of the map as we will explore the regions in more detail later. This was also a good way to introduce the races you'll find, and the magic system of the story.
So Lets go
Tumblr media
Ville du Voile
Of course I'd spell it wrong on the map
Voile for short, this is a city that surrounds the entire mortal realm. This uses the tarsus science of “it’s bigger on the inside.” The city actually goes over the realm like a dome. It’s about the size of Tokyo, even though the mortal realm is infinitely bigger. If you look down, you’ll see a huge faint galaxy.
This is where a lot of races and magic types live in peace. IT’s culturally diverse, but still has its downsides. This is the port of entry not only for travel to the mortal realm but also into the greater multiverse that’s not even going to come up until much later. Since it’s the port of entry, a lot of administration duties are done within the city. This was one of the palaces for empress Kassiopeia.
This is the first defense and last defense position for the mortal realm. First defense in case there is a threat that comes from within the realm like a rogue god. This is the last defense position if all other cities have fallen.
Never Ending Forest
Home to fey and elemental magic users. The forest is filled with many different types of ecosystems, cities and no one knows if it truly never ends. They are finding new species and different classifications of fey everyday. This is the perfect breeding ground for crimes and the best place to smuggle people past the Ville du Voile.
There are mainly different cities but the most important one is the court de flora. This is where the royal families of each faction live and where you can find the primordial titan of nature.
Styx
Named after the famous river Styx, this region is full of water with islands. Each island is their city themed after whichever death god controls it. Some cities are technologically advanced where others are stuck in the last. Some are bigger than others. The islands are connected via ley lines that transport each person to and from different islands. Boat travel is possible but oftentimes risky.
Styx is home to the Karakter, a race that is powered by spirit magic. Unlike most races, the Karaktar were once mortals who chose to become a Karaktar. The Karktar are responsible for ushering in the dead, and helping out the death gods since death in itself is a very taxing job.
When a soul enters Styx, they are granted with a choice.
Float through the water, until it’s their time to be reborn again. This normally takes about 3000 years.
-or-
Pledge yourself to a death god and become immortal, renouncing any claim to resurrection.
The water is full of the souls of the dead and contested spiritual energy that will kill anyone that’s in there. The longest someone has lasted in the water is 5 minutes and they were a titan. Since the water is so deadly, Styx is where you’ll find the prison where enemies of the realm are kept. This is reserved for those who try to attack any of the 20 primordial titans.
Solst and Equin
This is the region where you’ll find a lot of Equinoxtic magic users. (magic users who get their magic from the sum and night) These are more commonly referred to as hell and heaven in the mortal realms.
Solst is the equivalent to heaven where people who use light magic, or magic powered by the sun live. These are mainly referred to as angels.
Equin is the equivalent to Hell, although it is not underground, its land floats through space The only difference between Equin and Styx is that you’ll instantly die if you go over. There are safety measures in place. This is where you find dark magic users or magic powered by the night sky. These are commonly referred to as demons.
These two regions hold most of the patroned gods, but are also the most at war with each other. Especially the Ars goetia, the Ars fortona and the Ars Paulina (factions of very powerful angels and demons)
The 2 notable cities within this region are Cloud city and Night city. could city is more based off of Barcelona and night city takes inspiration from Las Vegas/Monte Carlo
Elysium
This is where you’ll find Royal gods(difference between and patroned gods are that Royal gods don’t get their powers from worship) this is the home to Kassiopeia, the Empress of the gods, and the soul Creation god. To put it plainly, she is god.
Elysium is a region full of galaxies, stars, and anything inter-dimensional. Only the richest of the rich and the most powerful beings live. This is where a lot of meetings where Kassiopeia’s presence is required take place. Kassiopeia never leaves Elysium without a royal escort, even though she will often leave Elysium.

IMHO, talking about manwha webtoons and fanfics:
1- today's webtoons are yesterday's fanfics. How many of us used to start writing because we wanted a powered fantasy for our favorite whumps? Nowadays the most popular webtoons are all power fantasy themselves so there is no need to write to "correct" anymore.
2- To invest time writing a fic you usually would need to be really attached to a character and their world. But:
2.1 - the majority of worlds are basic or barely understandable, they don't really inspire people to write anything about it
2.2 - the content of the average webtoon chapter is so short it's difficult to really get a grasp of the characters (and to form attachments). So it's difficult to write character studies.
And when you do the story is already too fixed, so it's difficult to write AUs. Idk how to explain this but there seems to be no space for "more" in many webtoons.
3 - the time you would spend plotting the fic is the time you nowadays find another webtoon that is basically the same to what interested you in the first place. There are few manwhas that I think are really unique and don't have yet another qualified "competitor".
4- good fanfics inspire good fanfics. There are the MVPs that are energetic enough write fanfics for themselves and don't need anybody else's to inspire them, and they are usually the trailblazers of every fandom, god bless them! but the majority of fic writers started writing because they really liked someone's fics about their current obsession so they want to join the bandwagon. So it's a quantity that follows the quality. To contribute to a fandom you need a fandom first.
5- there is no writing fest or writing contest in the webtoons fandoms, the way that used to be common for mangas and TV shows.
6- fujoshis moved the fanfic world on many, many shows and it's impossible to forget their necessity for a thriving ao3 fandom in good faith. But the BL fans are well served nowadays with many content, and the storylines are usually tight so they don't feel they need to write anything for them.
7 - the average age of readers is very young but unfortunately nowadays it's more difficult to find 12 years olds writing epic length fics lol
Literally insane to me how small the general webtoon fandom is outside of the webtoon app itself (and maybe reddit??)
I've talked to multiple people irl who LOVE reading webtoon, but the online community is borderline threadbare ! Most people on Tumblr have no IDEA who our blorbos are! I've checked tags for some fairly popular webtoon and it was like visiting that Tatooine town in the Mandalorian where there are 5 citizens total, but only if you also count the Mayor, the sheriff, and the deputy.
Lore Olympus is the most popular webtoon and has under 2,000 fics on AO3. Lookism has roughly 1,000. Unordinary, THEE legacy webtoon, only has 600, and it's been running for almost 7 years now. It has nearly 6M subscribers and still gets 50K+ likes each week. It's not dead by any means.
I guess it doesn't help that each webtoon is its own micro ecosystem and once a webtoon ends, that ecosystem typically fades with it. But webtoons can go on runs longer than most shows on streaming services, and those fandoms burn hot and bright even if only for the first month of a new season drop.
By comparison, webtoon fans are largely casual about their enthusiasm, even if they're highly invested in the story or characters. From my experience, only the most passionate try to connect with other fans online. But when you're passionate about one webtoon, I suppose it's hard to show constant excitement about the 20+ other stories one might keep up with. Still, between the 85 million monthly readers, you'd think each major webtoon would at least have a dedicated fan base (meaning people who regularly post theories, thoughts, fics, and fanart) of mere thousands outside of the app.
One exception for this is that Batman webtoon? It actually trends on Tumblr every now and again. But it doesn't count, because Batman has a built in fandom who'll eat up and yell in the streets about any content where he's a decent dad.
People who read romance webtoon all tend to read the same comics, and actively understand the references to other popular romance comics (Trashta, Team Seojun, SLS), so you'd think there'd be a greater sense of unity. More people actively searching out others to discuss with and posting their thoughts online and not just in that webtoon's comment section.
I mean, C'MON girls!!! Millions of people log into that app like everyday!!! WHERE is the community?? WHERE is the fanart?? WHERE is the fanfic?? WHY does Odd Girl Out only have 7 fanfics?? WHY are there like 2 people on Twitter posting about Weak Hero?? Head in hands fr

Combining extensions of assignments 5 and 6
I mentioned in a previous post, how I wanted the extensions of assignments 5 and 6 to be combined for the production of a short comic. In this post, I wanted to show a bit more about how I planned that.
First, I created a very basic script from my idea, which can be seen below. (J is 'tall' and A is 'short')
Tumblr media
After coming up with the basic plot, I wanted to create thumbnails for it. I used the video below to learn more about panel composition and things to keep in mind when thumbnailing comics.
youtube
Some of the elements that I took away and were helpful for this project were:
That it is important to thumbnail comics with lettering and word bubbles in mind.
To start scenes with establishing shots, in order to avoid confusion (this is not always necessary, but there should be a reason why it's not needed in a specific situation)
Keeping in mind the 180 rule, where when there is more than 1 character in a scene, they should always maintain the same left and right relationship, in order to avoid confusing the reader.
Using different types of panels angles and compositions to make the viewer pay attention to aspects that I consider more important. (eg. using close-ups of facial expressions to highlight their mental state) But at the same time having enough variation for it to not get stale.
So I brainstormed some ideas for panels and compositions on the left page, and the on the right I started thumbnailing the comic. (The comic is intended for Webtoon, so the format of the comic is vertical)
Tumblr media
Here I continued thumbnailing the comic.
Tumblr media
Here, my good pencil broke while I was thumbnailing, so I continued with a pen.
Tumblr media
After thumbnailing a big portion of the comic, I kept going with some brainstorming for panels and compositions. I haven't figured out how they will flow together yet.

Overall, the thumbnails are pretty rough, and I haven't figured out how to make the entirety of the comic flow together yet, but doing this was really helpful for figuring out what concepts need to be produced. I need to create a concept for the environment that the box will be found in, (which is going to be an alleyway.), as well as the classroom, movie theatre, and designs for the secondary characters. However because of time constraints, I will only be focusing on the two main characters and the alleyways for now.
