Section of the ‘Development of the Woollen Industry’ mural which looks over Ramsden Street in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. Made in 1967 by designer Harold Blackburn and mosaicist Professor Lavagno, the mural is a hugely familiar feature of Huddersfield’s assortment of otherwise not-very-interesting public art. Presented in the form of a tableau, the various stages of production in the early domestic woollen industry are represented, from its beginning as a cottage craft and its progression towards the start of the industrial revolution. These include hand carding, spinning using a distaff then a spinning wheel, the use of hand looms, the dyeing process, etc. In the background of the scene, we can see the water wheel and chimney which represent mechanisation and the move from the domestic to the factory system.
In this section, a merchant is holding a piece of red cloth and is presumably in negotiation with the man opposite. To the right of them stands a man in a grey shirt holding a pair of hand cropping shears. It was the development of mechanised cropping frames that formed one of the targets of the Luddite movement, as one mechanised frame could do the work of ten men. The Luddites are represented here by the man who holds a hammer, ready to smash up machinery.
Incidentally, a small gang of Luddites were responsible for the murder of a local mill owner William Horsfall on his return from Huddersfield’s Cloth Hall. Horsfall had been a strong advocate of using machinery in the production of textiles and was one of several mill owners targeted by the Luddites. The men who killed him were convicted and hanged.

How Do You Write Classified Ads That Work?
Want to have a high click rate at your website? Want to attract more attention to your ads? Then, you have to learn about how to write classified ads that work! These are some tips that one can follow to ensure eyeballs goes to your ads!
Tumblr media
1. It must invoke in your readers that they indeed need the thing you are trying to sell. Design it in such a way that it arouse their interest and act accordingly.
2. Keep it short and sweet. A long ad is tiring for the eyes and do not exceed the word limit for you would risk your ad being cut off.
3. Your ad should have plenty of empty spaces, clear fonts and pictures to avoid appearing cluttered.
4. It must have a powerful heading to attract attention. It must be visually appealing and professional looking to your viewers.
5. Tell your readers what is exactly in your ad and avoid words like cash, save or money that is used all the time.
6. When possible, quote from a well known source such as newspaper, persons etc
7. Use words to pull in people such as Amazing, Fantastic, Now etc
8. Look at what your competitors are offering. If their ads is boring and non colourful, you can make your ads colourful and full of fun words. If their ads are too informative and wordy, you can try to make yours short and to the point.
9. Offer some freebies or trials to your customers.
10. Look at successful ads by others. Reflect on what is it that makes them interesting and apply it to your ads. Of course, remember that people have different tastes and try not to enforce your will too strongly.
11. Do not use all caps words. This appears that you are shouting and is very annoying and distracting to viewers who have to sieve through all the capital letters to understand your message.
12. Before you launch your ad, do some surveys with friends or relatives and ask for feedback. This avoids you getting to a situation where you have to pay for something that is ineffective.
As a social media specialist, Roderick Low strive to define and deliver user and community needs, business goals, and web technology to craft and deliver long term successful social media programs for companies.

WEEK 8: WEEKLY MEETING REVIEW
We kick- started this week’s meeting by reviewing the success of our questionnaire, as the responses were as we hoped; supporting the purpose and intent of our existing brand plans. This reassured us we were on track and the concept was relevant.
Due to personal reasons, our graphics members Lewis and Foyjullah were running slightly behind schedule in regards to developing the branding and most importantly, the logo’s. As this was becoming an imminent requirement to allow for the progression of the remaining group members’ own visual outcomes, we prioritised supporting the development of this in our meeting. As shown in the photo above, we reviewed the extensive and enticing range of initial logo ideas Lewis had sketched out, selected the strongest contender, and got to work visualising this digitally. This was a high intensity, productive session allowing for the results we needed; a developed logo. Lewis then took it upon himself to finalise the logo in his own time, such as altering the weight of the linear qualities and ensuring the design is central- just to name a few- before then sending over to us over the coming days. I feel this really demonstrated what it means to collaborate within a team, as we were able to work together “as a group on a project, process or concept to achieve a better result than what could be obtained individually” (Digital Workplace, 2020).
We also spent time discussing our individual development plans over the coming week, to ensure we are all on track and if anyone felt they needed support or collaboration from a specific member of the group, to take advantage of our wide variation of skills. Despite Foyjullah being unable to make the meeting this week, we had discussed virtually his upcoming task of completing his version of a logo, specifically designed for ‘the mill’ aspect of our brand, representing our founding location in Huddersfield. Jamila suggested a collaboration with Foyjullah on an extended development of the logo; an animated version of such. We ensured this idea was relayed to Foyjullah to allow him to stay in the loop with upcoming plans, despite his unfortunate absence.
Due to the digital promotional outputs generally being a combination of other aspects, such as the branding and interior qualities in our case, I had to put the initial plans for the website and Instagram on the back burner. However, I now feel we have reached a point of development where the base components are coming together; a relevant colour scheme, inspiring movement/ aesthetic (Hygge) and soon to be finalised logo and overall branding, meaning I can get to work on re- imaging these within a digital space as promotional aspects. I intend to focus on the website primarily over the coming week, as I anticipate this to take slightly longer, but hope to have time to have a base plan of an Instagram feed complete before next week’s meeting to keep the group up to date on my progress and gain regular feedback and each stage of the process.

[Guest Post] Dawson’s, Dresden, and Copyright
[This month's guest post is courtesy of Ruth Flaherty, PhD Candidate in Intellectual Property and Economics, UEA Law School. You can find Ruth on Twitter at @RuthFlahertyUEA.] As many of you fellow fan scholars may be aware, the acceptances for the highlight of our calendar (Fan Studies Conference) have recently been sent out. This year’s conference is in Cardiff, and I am very excited to say I have been invited to present on my research. It made me wonder, how did I get to this stage? Given that we are going to the land of Torchwood and Dr Who, I decided to call up my very own TARDIS to travel through the seminal moments of my academic and fandom career. Cue ‘wibbly wobbly’ time travel sequence. The screen clears on the first set - a teenage girl’s bedroom in a suburb of London, styled in the late-90’s fashion of deep pile carpet and BSB posters on the wall. The girl (me) is excitedly watching Dawson’s Creek, a new TV show, on the new TV her parents bought her for her fifteenth birthday. I started watching DC (not to be confused with the other, comic book DC) in 1998 and fast developed opinions about the Joey/Dawson/Pacey love triangle. After quickly exhausting the possibilities of discussion amongst my high school friends, I found Dawson’s Desktop online, on my Windows 95 Gateway (remember them?) home computer and dial-up internet. Yes I’m showing my age! Dawson’s Desktop was an early fan engagement website set up in 1998. It amazed me that I could interact with the characters, read their diaries, and even post my ideas to other fans, giving me access to a limitless discussion group across the world. This was my first real experience of the interaction between fandom and commercial interests, and it just seemed right that I should be able to share my teenage hormone-and-angst filled fanfic stories and ideas with other fans. These stories varied in length and skill, but all had the same outcome - Joey ended up with Pacey (I leave it to your imagination how thrilled I was when *spoiler alert* they ended up together in the finale!). Over the course of those five years, in my real life I went from high school to college, and when Dawson’s finally went off the air I went off to university to study law. At that point, I thought my link with fandom was, like the posters on my bedroom wall, something I outgrew. However - life had other plans. Let’s jump back into my TARDIS. Cue more wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey stuff and a fade into a small local pub in London in 2003. This was my second career defining moment - I met my very own Pacey Witter (reader - I married him!). As a dyslexic, he uses fanfiction in a completely different way to me. He uses it to improve his literacy skills - and to this day writes fanfiction based around the Dresden Files (by Jim Butcher). His passion reignited mine, and I took his self-published fanfic into my PhD interview to study copyright law, economics and fandom at the University of East Anglia in 2016. This has given me so many amazing academic opportunities to fully develop my passion for research in this area and leads to the the final defining moment I wish to mention, and that truly inspired me. To experience it, come with me for a penultimate jump in my TARDIS. The scene opens on the auditorium at the University of Huddersfield in June last year for the absolute highlight of my academic career. I was extremely fortunate to hear many passionate and friendly people speak during that weekend, but the best moment was the keynote speech on fandom and activism given by Louisa Stein. Those that were there will remember the electric atmosphere, and the silence (and tears!) in the room at the end of her speech. My new academic aim is one day to present my research in such a powerful and inspiring way! As we step back into the TARDIS for a final time to return to the present day, I bid you adieu with a final chat about my research. I am in the second year of a PhD working on my thesis ‘How ‘Fair’ is Self-Published Fanfiction?’. My research looks at self-published fanfic online and through licensed schemes such as Kindle Worlds, using large-scale qualitative analysis to investigate how these works interact with the underlying works. Do they harm the sales of the underlying work in any meaningful way? What about the market for authorised adaptations, which is becoming more important in a post-MCU era? This comparative project assesses whether the current intellectual property laws (namely copyright, trademarks and passing off) in the UK, EU and US create market failure, and if so, what changes could be recommended - for example whether a new fair dealing copyright exception under S30A Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988 should be drafted to cover fanfiction. In my thesis I compare the more developed approach of the US with that of the UK and EU to see whether current intellectual property laws in these locations succeed in their stated aims to promote creativity, or whether they misunderstand creativity in the current world of online fandom and creativity. Inspiration is obviously not strictly internal, arising in a vacuum. It relies on other external expressions to build upon. While copyright allows for some reuse, it may be drawn too narrowly in relation to certain types of work like fanfic that may actually benefit the work that it is based on. This is interesting, topical research as there is very little case history on the subject in the UK and EU, and copyright law in these areas seems to presume fanfic is harmful and thus is an infringing copy or adaptation. However, in today’s age of user generated content much of the expansion of works such as fanfic on the internet rely on copyright exceptions such as fair dealing (UK/EU) and fair use (US). This is an exciting field of study and is currently being debated in the European Parliament as part of the new Proposed Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market.

Design Considerations For a Classified Ads Website
When I was based in Reading, Berkshire in the UK, I was very keen to produce a classified Ads website for the local community. I knew that there was a demand for this since there was a lot of activity at the local car boot sales.
Tumblr media
It was a combination of my interest in web design and marketing that drove me to complete this project.
On the web design front, we need to create a nice template that lends itself to the inclusion of Ads and community features such as a map and news.
For the Map, I used a map API that allowed me to insert a scrollable map into the template. And for the news, you can take advantage of RSS feeds that may be inserted into your site template.
Then, for sub pages, you can write articles about the local area that may also be attractive pages for local businesses to advertise on. For example, I wrote an article about the local hotel accommodation.
Other useful topics could be about the local entertainment options, leisure facilities and transportation options.
So these pages can help with search engine optimization to get your website listed in search results and can be the home to sponsored Ads from local businesses.
For the actual classified Ads, I recommend including photographs that people can upload and links to a "more details" page for an individual product listing.
Since most classified Ads will not contain much text, you should look for ways to bolster the content such as with related articles and similar items. This will probably entail some scripting to automate the process where the keywords for the Ad are used to source the related content.
So you need to think along the lines of leveraging the content that your users of the site submit. Make it as easy as possible for them to contribute their Ads and upload photos. And then try and automate the back end as much as possible to bolster the content with related news, articles and products.

Orchard House, Lincolnshire Property
Orchard House, Lincolnshire Architecture, English Project
Orchard House in Lincolnshire
16 Jul 2021
Orchard House
Architects: Campion Design
Location: Lincolnshire, England, UK
Campion Design began designing Orchard House with the vision to create beautiful, sustainable, and affordable architecture. At the time their director, Will Campion, was only 22, but they have finished constructing this smart home; proving you do not need to choose between sacrificing the budget or the environment.
Orchard house was about developing a new Lincolnshire typology, that envisioned a sustainable future for the rural agrarian communities. The traditional agrarian architecture that’s quintessential to Lincolnshire, inspired the gable design and striped textured reminiscent of the nearby barns and neighbouring St Michael’s Church and it’s standing seam leadwork.
For my third, constructed house, I aimed for zero-carbon, self-sufficiency, equipping it with a rainwater harvester, solar panels, an air-source heat pump and heat-recovery ventilation. This was still all for just £1000/sqm, in addition to hundreds of pounds worth of savings per year in utility bills; here we made eco-friendliness synergistic with cost efficiency.
The house utilised SIPs panels filled full of insulation made from Rapeseed oil, making sure the house was used from the most low-embodied energy materials. The larch board and batten cladding was invented by Campion Design to tie together the reclaimed bricks and the timber to reimagine the corrugated steel of a traditional Lincolnshire barn.
It’ll be these aggregates of marginal gains that can help restore our symbiotic relationship with the planet; now more prevalent than ever. Recent events have made me realise how dependant we are on global systems, and how vulnerable we are to disruption through no fault of our own. Saving the world does not have to cost the Earth. Self-sufficient design will help to empower our physical and mental health, remove utility costs and slow climate change. Orchard House is just the first step in achieving this eudaimonic utopia.
How is the project unique? We were able to delivery a innovative piece of architecture that was detail focused and assimilated into the orchard while still celebrating the local heritage. The house was designed to be an exploration of a new Lincolnshire sustainable typology by proving such an eco-friendly house can be both beautiful in complex locations and delivered to a budget under £300,000.
What were the solutions? We developed a design that drew together the texture of the surrounding context with the verdant orchard site. The standing-seam lead from the church roof inspired the striped facade of Orchard house but re-imagined in timber as a more sustainable option.
What were the key challenges? Being located next to a grade 1 listed asset, in the grounds of a non-designated heritage asset and neighbouring another, achieving planning for such a progressive piece of Lincolnshire architecture was a huge challenge.
What are the sustainability features? The house has an EPC rating of A, and utilised solar panels, air-source heat pump, rain water harvester and a mechanically ventilated heat-recovery system. The house is primarily made of structurally Insulated Panels, filled with insulation made from rapeseed oil, the bricks are all reclaimed to lower the embodied carbon to as small as possible.
What was the brief? To design and build a beautiful, sustainable house in a historic setting for an affordable price. The house wanted to be bright and warm to inhabit while having flexible spaces that can be dynamically arranged to either be an intimate snug or a venue for a dinner party.
