Yesterday was the one hundredth update day, today is the four month anniversary, and what do we get for the occasion? Plush Rump. Which is probably accidental but it is upsetting all the same.

cw: a lot of this post is about puppets.

So I originally assumed Dave’s bro was around 16, but this update has me questioning that. The fairly adult website that ‘rakes in thousands of dollars a month,’ the recent mention of taking Lil Cal out on gigs, and the control that Bro has over the common areas of the house all could be true of a teenager with permissive guardians, but I also wonder if he’s Dave’s sole guardian. If that’s true, I wonder if this is a long term arrangement, or if going to live with his cool adult brother is a recent move Dave’s made in response to other circumstances. It would definitely explain how Bro isn’t used to sharing his space, and maybe how Dave has latched onto Bro as someone to emulate, if he’s lost other people in his life.

Dave ‘starting to flip the fuck out’ on p.465 really plays into this. It’s really unclear if Dave flipping the fuck out about puppets and then confessing it to his friends is a regular daily occurrence, or if it’s happening for the first time now after building up for weeks, months or years. We do find out Dave has nightmares about Cal and wakes up scared, possibly even with panic attacks, and this happening regularly in the daytime hours could explain why Dave pesters John so constantly.

While Dave’s been on the computer, Cal has swung his legs round to the other side of the speaker tower and is staring at Dave. I still think Bro is hiding somewhere and messing with Cal. Honestly, just from seeing Cal’s face up close on p.463 with his too-realistic eyes, I can understand why he haunts Dave’s nightmares. But if Bro is regularly stealth-moving Cal around the house like an evil elf on the shelf… even if it’s done as a joke, that sounds like a genuinely distressing way to live.

Back to Plush Rump, I guess. :/ We’ve got categories! Following ‘Gallery’ and ‘Live Video,’ the site caters to a variety of puppet subtypes. These definitely don’t represent all the types of puppetry out there – but maybe these are what make the big bucks in the Smuppets industry. I didn’t know all of these and some seem fairly niche, so here are the definitions.

Marionette – a puppet (often wooden) controlled with strings Bunraku – a form of traditional Japanese puppet theater Plush/Foam/Felt – all materials a soft puppet could be made from Marotte – a medieval rod controlled puppet, associated with jesters Senor Weñces – a Spanish ventriloquist who lived to be over 100 Chinface – using the human chin as a puppet, where the upside down real mouth becomes the puppet mouth Finger puppet – a very small puppet worn on one finger

So how ironic is this, really? Bro is clearly spending a lot of time and energy on this, it could be his main source of income, he knows a lot about the art of puppetry. So what level is he on? Is he actually genuine about the puppet stuff, and telling Dave it’s ironic because Dave is too young to know what’s really up? Was it originally ironic and then Bro accidentally committed way too hard to the bit and backdoored his way into becoming part of an actual puppet subculture? Is Bro cool and above it all this entire time, mistakenly thinking that all the puppet fans are also doing this ironically? Or is ‘being into Smuppets ironically’ actually a massive trend among hipsters in this world, and everyone’s doing it ironically?

To be clear. I think puppetry is a genuine art form. But I think it’s written in Homestuck to be intentionally unpleasant to think about, the webcomics equivalent of reblogging a post that causes psychic pain. And I think it is definitely accomplishing that.

In today’s much more pleasant update, we get Pesterlogs! Dave messages John (no reply), Dave messages Rose (we see their previous conversation from p.419), and Rose messages John (no reply). This brings Dave almost in sync with Rose and John in the timelines of their pages – he’s a couple minutes behind at most. My hope is that these three will fully sync up, and then GG will get introduced either slightly in the past, or slightly in the future.

I like when previous Pesterlogs get repeated and we see them again with new context from the other participant. Now we’ve seen the puppets and the websites, Dave processing his feelings about them feels more genuinely anguished. Rose claiming she ‘likes’ Bro’s websites takes on its own disturbing new tone, although I’d guess she just likes psychoanalyzing the mind behind those sites. But my favorite line is Rose saying she and Dave don’t have time to ‘evaluate each other's radically debilitating pathologies.’ It really paints a picture of their relationship – we’ve seen now that they both have pretty strange lives, share their homes with odd people, and maybe aren’t doing well because of it. I think the same is true for John, but Rose and Dave don’t see that from their perspectives. They do recognize this in each other, so they’re both the one person the other can be honest with about their mental state.

On p.471 Rose deploys the punch designix, and I am SO excited to see what this thing does, we are BACK and it is SBURB TIME. Rose moves the piano to place it, and it kind of looks like a piano, except with no keys and instead had a computer keyboard attached to it. It also has what looks like a slot on the upper left… perhaps even a slot for punch cards, to design them.

My issues with the Nimona movie

!Read the webcomic before interacting with my post for a proper comparison and also because it's a genuine work of art!

I read Nimona when I was very young and before I knew and understood queer stuff. It resonated with me in a way few things have ever done and it was one of the first times a story was more than an escape. It was a reflection of my existence, an honest one. It was dark and gritty and there was no clear cut happily ever after or answers and I loved it!  The vast amount of themes present and the story’s wide focus in addition to the wild, loose art really captured my heart. The Nimona movie is distilled in comparison, with less ambiguity and exploration present. Changes either weren’t elaborated on enough (having the story take place in a more futuristic setting rather than the medieval ages is an interesting concept but its not utilized accordingly) or actually weakens the initial story.

Focusing on Blackheart and Goldenloin, the lifeblood of the series, in the webcomic the both of them came from the same Institution orphanage where they were raised ( with seemingly little choice in the matter) to be knights. ( In fact, funnily enough Ambrosius used to pretend to come from a noble lineage as a sort of defense mechanism which ended up getting him bullied.)  It’s how the duo connected in the first place and it’s also what tore them apart. The conspiracy wasn’t as grand and crazy as the movie's was; Ambrosius was considered the “better” type of knight candidate, the “good” type of lower class person; naïve, polite, conventionally attractive, didn't question things, had believed in the system from a young age, etc. So before a joust between Ballister and Ambrosius the Director came up to the latter with an explosive lace in order to guarantee Ambrosius’s victory. While initially refusing to use it, after being easily defeated by Ballister, Ambrosius loses his hold on things and presses the button, leading to Ballister losing his arm. The Institution being ableist as shit expels Ballister, believing there’s “no use for an one armed knight”, and all this leads to Blackheart being a villain. The situation is much more complex and messy than the movie presented and it’s from an intentional betrayal from Goldenloin.  A great example on how the disenfranchised often have to turn on each other to survive, on how people are evaluated by usefulness, and how those discarded by society often have nowhere else to turn to but crime. And while the affection between them is less apparent in the webcomic ( it’s very clear the romantic relationship always had to be kept secret) it’s still present throughout the entirety of the story. It’s in how the both of them refuse to kill each other, how they make sure the other is always safe, how Ambrosius always makes sure Ballister escapes, how they can casually meet up with each other, how it’s implied that a lot of the time Ambrosius has been going along with missions to make sure Ballister stays alive. But they’re also the birthers of these cutting lines of dialogue:

“ You wouldn’t kill me.”

“Yeah, and I’m supposed to be the villain. What does that make you?”

With all this in mind, the ending for them in the webcomic made me shed tears, because they’re scarred and hurt and things will never return to how it used to be and the future is so uncertain but change was made and things are better and with the Institution gone they can finally be together in whatever way fits them. I get none of this from the movie, everything that was compelling and complex about the relationship between Ballister and Ambrosius was taken away for something more simpler and palatable.

Now for Nimona, who’s always been a representation of queer rage but a queer rage that isn’t rational or pretty or always justified. She loves chaos and destruction and killing people, in comparison to Blackheart who, while causing trouble himself, doesn’t want to hurt people, especially for the sake of it.  Nimona wants to reflect her hurt onto the world and she was initially interested in Blackheart because she thought he was the ruthless villain society made him out to be. But even when he isn’t that Nimona still genuinely cares for Ballister and also wants to stop the Institution at any cost, especially once learning  how they treated him. Nimona’s also playful and creative and emotional and she likes games and pranks and pizza. Nimona is a kid, including with, and not despite, her actions and powers, something even Ambrosius acknowledges as an example of his turn against the Institution. Still, there is genuine reason for Blackheart to doubt Nimona, with her penchant for violence and  her lying about her backstory and her keeping her motivations hidden, though it is her right to keep those aspects of her identity private. Nimona’s origin is meant to be unclear and the audience is supposed to be left wondering about her to the very end of the story along with Ballister, learning with the characters that the exact details don’t matter in application to who Nimona is as a person and her right to be a person, even if she isn’t entirely human or human at all.

The movie definitely smoothed over Nimona’s more sharp edges, shaped her rage in something more focused and applicable, and ( excuse the word choice) overall took the magic away from her. And the experimentation she’s been forced through, one of the only solid facts known about Nimona and one of the things that's unfortunately defined her, isn’t explored at all. The Institution was interested in her and what her powers could be harnessed for,  highlighting the nature of capitalism and the concept “ continued innovation and development no matter the cost” much better than the movie does.

Disappointingly, who isn’t covered at all is Dr. Meredith Blitzmeyer, a poc scientist who dabbles in magic and likes combining her fields of interest together.  A positive example of innovation and invention in the series, someone who creates for the sake of it and the learning process but never puts her work above others and offers it up to help people. She’s a great aid and confidant to Blackheart, who encourages his interests and acts as a support system. They even set up a laboratory together in the epilogue, plus there’s absolutely no romantic chemistry built up between the duo, just platonic male and female friends! 

For such an important character not to be included is a waste of potential and representation. 

And I know changes had to be made to update the 5+ year old webcomic material and in order to fit the medium of a movie ( if it had been an episode series, for example, I think the adaptation would be closer to the source material) and Nate himself wanted to edit stuff to fit his current vision. It’s not like the movie is bad either and I understand why people enjoy it, especially with all the representation ( genderfluid Nimona finally being canon made me so happy too, believe me).  

But I just can’t enjoy the movie. It just makes me mad and sad. I will always prefer the source material and refer to it for content. That’s it.

A Hector near the end of his schooling arc might be neat (he's learned what he's came here for, he's ready to return to Ostia and do Uther and his people proud, and more competently than many mightve imagined at that) but. Arkanoth is a TTTRPG I'm developing (The extra T is for Tactical). It started as a final project for university and a silly webcomic, but I ended up developing it as a Table Top Role Playing Game. ⬇⬇So let me tell you a bit about it:⬇⬇

What system does your game have? 5e? d10?

Heh... I wish... I found no system that could adapt to what I had in mind, so I am developing my own, a system I call the 753 system. Something I made that allows modularity and high customization at character creation. I could have probably adapt any known system into something remotely similar to what I wanted, but I'm a terrible reader and too much of a perfectionist...

What is the ambientation for the game then? Fantasy? Sci-fi?

I go with urban fantasy, oriented to futuristic fantasy. I'm bored of typical medieval or just sci-fi, I look for something that gives more the vibes of something more actual yet getting high fantasy involved. Imagine it like a world where bikes fly, travel can take seconds thanks to portals, creatures are genetically engineered, and yet you can make a little guy that travels on a horse slug looking at internet.

So... Why should I even be interested in your game?

Easy, three points: - EVERY CHARACTER IS ABLE TO USE MAGIC. No matter the class, race or anything. Magic 4 everyone, baby! - EVERY SPELL IS CUSTOM. If you don't have the spell you want, you create it! That simple! -LEVELESS CHARACTERS. Either if you want to have track of XP points or prefer something more simple, the system got you covered! Keep improving your character stats and spells until you decide it's enough!

Alright, what else?

Mucho texto already, so I will go with some numbers of what will be avaliable on the first version: -7 races -21 classes -5 types of magic -Combat, custom spells and social mechanics -Modifiers to customize your character and spells

So, this is a resume of what the 1st version (or Alpha) of Arkanoth will have, and worry not, the Alpha is like 1/6 of what I have in mind.

Hi ! Sorry that it took me so much time to answer i’ve been struggling and this ask was hard for me to work on but I’m feeling slightly better !

First off thank you that very sweet ( and i love my partner very much, thank youuuu !!! )

Second, what makes me draw is more of a need to draw ? Like, I don’t know how to explain it but I just need to draw a lot, that a part of me and being creative has always been a part of me. I grew up reading mangas and playing pretty video games, I developed a passion for old cartoons and got into webcomics, I like museums and fashion. A lot of things inspire me !

Currently I have a huge interest in medieval core art. I always been a fantasy gal but this days it’s getting stronger this days to the point i plan to make a whole dnd campaign just so i can design pretty characters.

I know that not really what people tend to like off my art there ( i think i’m most known for silly art ) but I have a huge fantasy oc lore ( tag is #ocsolarian and most of the infos are on my insta ) and reworking the character and the universe by making cultural research is a huge boost of motivation !

I played "Detective Beebo" all night and... fell in love with the game. It's funny, heartwarming, romantic! And sometimes even chilling to the bones.

I loved the horror sorta sci-fi part with anatomy. The house does feel like it's alive, but it's a very alien life, which is immposible to comprehend - and it scares. Usually I don't fear uncomprehencible, but, for some reason, your concept of haunted houses gets me.

Also the maniac feels scary too. Suddenly appears, proceeds to kill everyone, doesn't elaborate, leaves time loops. And when he does elaborate, it makes him even more scary... But it quickly gets away once you get to know him better. What a stupid stinky bastard man! (affectionately)

I love how everything in this story clicks together perfectly, and the whole puzzle opens new pieces that never were told to you directly, but you can see them through the cracks. Not gonna lie, I rotate the game in my head like a rubik's cube for the whole day and open up even more new details I didn't notice before. And headcanons. :)

And don't get me started on characters, because

I don't have words.

All I'm trying to say is:

Thank you so much!!!! Im so happy that you enjoyed the house part especially. Im a big fan of spookies but I also really like when things are explained to me directly (or else i get like what?? what happened why did that happened i don get it) so the whole house lore was a tight balance between making an understandable mechanic and leaving it vague enough to make it spooky.

Most of the house lore is me being a biology nerd. I think the fear of something thats natural but not yet understood has great potential. I think the fear to the house should be the same type of fear the first humans wouldve felt at seeing a whale for the first time, or people from the medieval era seeing an animal a little too weird and deeming it something demonic or magical. In a way, cryptids tie into this too.

Biology is so weird!! Organisms are weird!! and they get scary when you dont know what they do, how they do it and having no control over their actions.

And and and yes!! I also love when everything ties together at the end! Its pretty fun seeing people playing the start again bc of all the little hints/foreshadowy things that are at play, like Beebs hatred of art or the little "one more chance" on the top of the screen when you enter the house.

Do you have an idea of when you think you'll start writing the Bondwidth comic...or at least do you know how you want it to start? (no rush, just curious)

So, with the way I go about my stories and comics, Bondwidth is kind of lowkey already written. I have a script for the first comic in my head and I know what all I want to happen. I just do not know why I will actually put those ideas to paper.

I do know for a fact I am focused on getting Mariana's one-shot comic done before I touch any of my other stories. And that is meant to come out this year and hopefully be started in the summer time (to match the vibes)

The funny part about Bondwidth is that I had planned to leave it as writing. It's why Bondwidth has the most fics written compared to any of my other stories. It was so instead of worrying about drawing Beanstalked and Bondwidth at the same time, I'd just work on Beanstalked and write Bondwidth...

...then Sweetheart and Bitterbat kicked down my door and slammed Glitter and Guilt onto my desk.

The bright side is that I now know it's possible for me to work on more than one webcomic at once as I've been at this as a hobby for awhile now and know what my pace is.

That being said, I see Bondwidth as more of a slice-of-life just like I plan with Glitter and Guilt. It's basically just going to be a series of chapters just...following Nova and Pluto's life rather than a big over arching story (I mean, there will be some plot stuff here and there of course). So it's very possible to just...sprinkle little bits here and there between Beanstalked and Glitter and Guilt stuff.

The major hurdle for this specific story though is that I need to figure out how their world looks so it's not just every other futuristic setting. I need to learn how to draw a more futuristic settings because future stuff tends to have a loooooot of details. At least more than the typical forest and diet medieval of Beanstalked and the modern and familiar cities of Glitter and Guilt.

Another major hurdle is designing aliens because, unlike BSed and GaG, where humans are the default for background characters, Bondwidth has a population of both aliens and humans. It's why I've been so slow designing Bondwidth characters and why y'all have barely seen any.

BUT I will get the story of catgirl x cyborg enby out into the world.
