Hi I'm Shannon aka Daddy Wrong Legs - I've been skating nearly two years. I'm (hopefully) going to pass mins very soon. I train with a gender inclusive team on the Wirral called Riverside Rebels. I usually LUM but I may actually play one day.

Roller Derby Referee Flash Cards
I wrote a little web-app that generates penalty flash cards for referees (and NSOs) in training.
You can select a few options, like having the full verbal queue displayed, have a gif of the hand signal, and the NSO code shown. You can also disable team colours too, if you want.
http://bit.ly/zebraflash
I’m still very new to derby and refereeing, so there might be errors or things I could improve. All the data came from the WFTDA site so it’s up to date as far as I know.
Feel free to use, share, edit! If you see anything wrong or have suggestions, I’d love to hear them.

Today's practice
I got 20 laps in my 27/5 which is a new PB! I was in a lot of foot pain all session though which was grim. The team has really been through the mill recently and a lot of our old guard have left to join another, bigger and more successful, local team. Which is fair enough for them but by god have we got a lot on trying to keep everything running. It's starting to feel like things are getting better and we're getting closer to being the team we want to be so I feel happy. Next week, 21 laps!

Roller derby names
I feel like I need to come up with a roller derby name for myself, but I’m really struggling. Is it difficult for other people too?

Slowly but surely
A few things have happened since my post last week. Nothing too major, but a few little victories:
1. I went to Thursday training and did some referee practice. I didn’t call any penalties, since I’m still struggling with the confidence to do that. However, I’m getting better at pack definition. Several times, both the coach and myself called ‘no pack’ and ‘out of play’ at the same time, which I think is pretty good going!
2. Sunday sessions was epic. We did more bracing walls and even had a little go as a jammer trying to get through braced walls. It was tough, but a few people complimented me on my stability and strength. For the mixed ability session after I did more refereeing while the more proficient skaters did their walls and some jam starts. I was the only referee, so it got pretty crazy at times. Again, I was mostly watching pack definition. Saw a few penalties, but by the time my brain figured out what to say it felt a bit too late to actually call. But I did it in my head, so that’s something!
3. Monday free skate was good fun! We took our speakers and the laptop so it was much louder this time. I think everyone who went had a good time. I didn’t really work on any specific skill, I just wanted to be on skates and do some transitions and different kinds of stops, and just roll around the hall. Good times!
4. I’m on the British Champs T4 NSO crew for the first games! Scorekeeper, and then penalty box timer. I’m super happy, and very excited to be officiating in a very real capacity. Especially considering there were so many volunteers to NSO for the games!
5. The DHSNO has offered for me to shadow her on some bouts to train me up as a HNSO. Of course I accepted gratefully! Absorb all the knowledge!
6. I’ve been doing some networking (mostly adding referees on Facebook, etc) but it’s starting to grow my contact list a bit, and get my name out there. This can only be a good thing.
So, yeah. That’s my week in review!
Here’s a few photos of us Misfits!

More fun in stripes
I have now refereed ten scrims in total! This is a big achievement for me, and a nice milestone. It was made even nicer by the fact it was a home scrim at Mansfield Roller Derby, and friends & skaters from around the area came to both play and officiate.
I was OPR today, with referee colleagues from Derby, Nottingham, and another from Mansfield. It was really great to be on a crew with a fellow Mansfield referee, and it makes me excited for August when there’ll be even more of us in stripes!
Once again, Mansfield’s home-grown NSOs did themselves incredibly proud and handled a few tricky situations fantastically. They all challenged themselves and did superbly. I’m one very happy and proud league head-ref!
I called a couple of penalties, including a new one for me - ‘late block’. The other referees agreed on my call, so it’s good to get that feedback.
Apparently, I’ve also found my referee voice! One of the spectators commented how clearly they could hear my verbal cues, even from the opposite side of the track. That was great to hear, as I did struggle to find that voice when I first started. Now though it’s very much a natural reflex. I just need to work on finding that voice when talking during training sessions and explaining rules to the beginners! But, talking to a group is very different to assessing a penalty to a skater.
Personally, the day was a success. The NSOs and officials were all present and knew exactly what they needed to do. Mayra, the HNSO, handled everything perfectly and professionally. Fantastic communication from everyone and all issues dealt with.
So, yes - ten outings as a referee! I’m getting more invites to other events too, so this networking thing really does work! I had to turn a few things down though due to scheduling conflicts or the sad fact I can’t teleport (yet). Referees are in demand, and it’s incredibly good fun. If you’re tempted, even slightly, maybe have a chat with your friendly Head Referee.... ;)

PBM
Two bouts today - B teams and a co-ed scrim - and I was Penalty Box Manager for both.
A last minute drop out and an NSO down for the second bout meant positions were changed around and I didn’t get to do Penalty Tracking.
No matter. I felt more prepared to handle PBM rather than PT this time around.
Nothing unusual happened, and I didn't have to draw on my new knowledge of jammer penalty rules at all, but that’s okay. I still learnt a few new things and I managed to keep a good eye on the pack to watch for any skaters coming in for penalties.
I spotted quite a few penalties as they were called, including an epic four-person cut track and a few back blocks and forearms.
I like seeing something and thinking “was that a ...” then hearing a whistle. Each bout I watch I feel another tiny piece of the puzzle falls in to place. The question is though, how big is the puzzle? I have a feeling it’s kind of infinite - there’s always more to learn. And that’s the exciting thing.
