alright so with z brewer's recent announcement of a new duology set in the covt universe i'm going to start taking the steps of fully claiming d'ablo as an oc on this blog. i've been writing him for almost 10 years and have poured tons of work and characterization into him that he doesn't have in the books (hell, i even gave him a last name).

so i'll be slowly untangling his canon elements (name and community) and applying my own lore. he will no longer be part of a vampire society called "elysia" (which is the part i mourn the most because out of everything in this clusterfuck of a series that was the only perfect part), and i'll be worldbuilding my own society and culture, including the lore that i incorporated into my fic faestesch aeternitatem (yes, all those fancy cultural practices are by me). no worries, FA will still be finished and it's still being worked on!!! d'ablo will get a new name (tbd), a different job description, but ultimately he'll remain the same character (maybe more italian i haven't decided yet). canon gave him a bad first name, pale skin, and leather gloves. everything else you see on this blog is my own creation.

i still love d'ablo very much as a character. it's just that, ultimately, if you peel off all those layers that i added onto him, there isn't much. if we learn more about him in this new series, i'll incorporate that stuff and work with it. but i'm not willing to let go of all of the work that i've done on him just because, at the end of the day, he's not "my character." so i'm taking that work and officially making it my own. my character now, no takebacksies.

on this note, dorian will remain within the covt universe. i haven't developed him nearly as much as d'ablo and since we know more about him it's much harder to remove him from that context

i'll keep a covt verse for interactions with other canon rpers and other things related to covt

any writing i do of d'ablo in a covt verse is still going to be the exact same character

with these changes i'll talk to my partners about how they want to proceed with our threads-- if the name change can just happen abruptly or if they want to start over. i want to stress that this is still the same character that you all know and have been writing with, just with a different name. i'll make more posts elaborating on what has changed and what hasn't as i work through it. ty for reading and i'm happy to explain on discord or dms if something isn't clear!!!

Quite genuinely what are you talking about? There's no one here. I am looking around, there's no one in my house. There is no one touching me. I am dealing with a nebulous cloud of horny men who, based on how many DMs I get despite saying I don't talk on DMs in my bio, all have terrible reading comprehension. 3. what fandoms do you write for? these days, potc and final fantasy and assassin's creed now and then, though i generally write for whatever grabs my attention. remember when i wrote a fallout fic? wild

4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos? oh dear. let’s see:

a house, a hearth, a (s)holmes — the great ace attorney, 6k. a collection of missing scenes about iris watson and her silly little family.

good company — fullmetal alchemist, 9k. pre-canon, roy mustang recruits people for his team. (i wrote this when i was 19 and there's still a lot i like about it, but boy is it humbling to reread.)

benchfellows — final fantasy vii remake, >1k. a drabble about cloud and aerith fighting in the wall market colosseum.

heart & home — fullmetal alchemist, 5k. roy and riza visits roy's home both pre-ishval and post-canon.

5. do you respond to comments? almost certainly. sometimes i won't on really old pieces or comments that don't really necessitate a reply, but i do my best :—)

6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? i trend more bittersweet than angsty; o sleeper (ff7, cloud/aerith) is one of the only ones i'd classify as TRULY angsty, everything else ends much higher.

7. what's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? showing their versatility: slowly (ff7, also cloud/aerith) ends a little bittersweetly but the climax of this fic remains the sappiest, gushiest thing i've ever written

8. do you get hate on fics? i don't think i've gotten hate since the ff.net days and i'm grateful for it

9. do you write smut? a little, but nothing wild or worth posting. otherwise we're always fading to black or describing sex vaguely babey

10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written? it's not my forte, per se, but the potc/temeraire universe is over 50k words and still will not let me go, so you could say i've dabbled.

15. what's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? i have been working on a written version of the trespasser DLC for one of my dragon age characters for like.............three years now and it will never evolved past the five scenes i have scribbled down i'm afraid. the quarantine brainrot was real but it did not last

16. what are your writing strengths? i like to fancy myself good at description! and i'm very particular about flow and tone. there's nothing i won't do to maintain tone, even if it hurts to cut segments that don't fit

17. what are your writing weaknesses? alas, describing shit well means that i am terrible at stepping back and letting a scene breathe. i feel the need to explain stuff that doesn't need it, to my own detriment. and lately i just Cannot thread the needle with any transitions between scenes. someone come cure my yips it's extremely annoying balking at this

18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? it CAN work but the only time i'm ever using it is if 1) i know someone who speaks the language, so i'm not making an ass of myself, or 2) it adds to the confusion of a scene in a meaningful way. rarely does it come up and rarely do i employ it

19. first fandom you wrote for? i'm sure it was kingdom hearts. the more things change, etc.

20. favorite fic you've written? the aforementioned potc/temeraire crossover aside...i could play coy here, but you KNOW it's steadfast & dependable (6k, potc, norribeth. but. it's complicated). she is my beautiful girlfriend and the concept continues to compel me on rereads

glance, change, alternate for serena

glance: at first glance, what stands out most about your oc's appearance? what's their distinguishing feature?

serena's big, not abnormally so, but she's a taller than average and muscular. i think that paired with her scars n wing rips makes her very intimidating to most people, esp at a glance. exudes "dont' fuck with me" energy and she embraces that for the most part. as for her distinguishing feature, i think most of the time people first notice the scars on her face, then her other scars/wing rips, and then her prosthetic in approximately that order

change: has your oc ever drastically changed their appearance? significant haircuts, big tattoos, complete wardrobe swap, etc? why? how do they feel about the change?

not really! she's been pretty consistent with her looks most of her life and, outside of makeup and generally smaller accessories (neither of which she wears), i don't think there's a ton of ways most dragons can change up their appearances? tbh dragons and bodily self-expression is sort of an underdeveloped realm of ttw's universe that i oughta put more thought into bc they're just as social as humans, but don't have the same pressures of modesty?

going back to the question though, the biggest change she's made is her big arm sleeve tattoo:

she got it bc it looks cool and she likes plants first and foremost, but there's also an element of "i want to have something that's not a scar on my body" to it. she'd get more tattoos if she had the money too, but alas

it's not a *drastic* change per se, but she's gone through different prostheses/styles over life since she's a congenital amputee. most of the time, she has two models of prostheses—one designed for day-to-day use and another for sport/active use—that she switches out depending on what she's doing. she's pretty happy with how her current ones look, but if she had more money she'd consider other models. also doesn't help that getting them replaced every few years is a huge drain on her finances

alternate: What would your oc's alternate universe look be? If they're a fantasy character, what's their modern look? If they're sci-fi, what's their fantasy look? what au would you want to see your oc in, and how would they dress themself? bonus: prompt an au!

Hey Writeblr!! I attempted to join the community a few years back but way too quickly found myself overwhelmed and ended up fizzling out >.> but I'm back now and hoping to make a better (less stressed out) effort! A bit worried I might have burnt-off some of the writeblr folks by just kinda peace-ing out, but I really do hope to make a better go of it this time around and post/interact more often! (I have so many writeblr posts to catch up on, yikes!)

About me: Vera (she/her) I have been writing consistenly for a solid 15ish years now, have a creative writing master's behind me, (and over a million combined words in fan-fic LOL) and finally feel in a creative place where I'm ready to (hopefully) start publishing, in whatever form it takes!

YES! Some of you (might) remember my novel Sauvarin - well, it's back, babey! And about 95-99% complete!! Currently on my last round of scene-rewrites and line editing before I begin the horrifying task of querying!

So, what the heck is SAUVARIN??

TLDR: fantasy post-apocalypse featuring an autistic blacksmith who is utterly oblivious to the local boot-legger Trying Very HArd to be her girlfriend (pray for Yenn, y'all! She is being SO brave about it!) Said blacksmith, Isaura, is instead on A Mission Of Great Importance to inter the ashes of her surrogate father, Soo-young, in his childhood home town. Except, no one's ever heard of this town, the internet's broken, and she accidenatlly discovers that METAL IS LIVING NOW???

Why do all "simple requests" always end up being the most cataclysmic???

Well, on to major themes and elements! We've got:

NON-DYSTOPIAN post-apocalypse (we're currently living in the dystopia, y'all!), set in the near distant future where the vast majority of humanity has fled climate change to an orbital space station leaving circa 10million people on earth. The endlings determined to protect what they still can, raise their children, protect their towns, and face whatever magic storms come their way. But right now? They have food, they have community, and there's always something silly to laugh at!

It is a LOW-FANTASY, meaning we've got: freaky and intelligent animals! A magic so new to the world, most people don't realise it's possible! The corpse of god! Cool mushrooms! A darkness that watches YOU! Baba-Yaga (she's a scientist now)! Old women who Take No Shit But Absolutely Know How To Harm!

NATURE mutating - what it "reclaims" in some areas, it mutates in others, or simply allows itself to start anew. Nature in this novel is very much embodiying the quote: "you cannot kill me in a way that matters". Freaky deer. Metal predators. Plants that grab onto YOU.

NOBODY WINS, BUT NO ONE LOSES EITHER the head of Department for Zoology took one look at the "provisional government" and just fucked off into the woods (Baba Yaga). "The Hero" of the orbital space station realising what their heroism actually cost the earth in raw materials. The dead are returned, but not to the life they remembered leaving. Sometimes you do, in fact, find the ghost of a child in the woods (it's okay if you are not sure what to do next).

Well, that's probably enough for now. I'll do some character intro posts (as memes!) hopefully over the weekend - it's a fairly big cast with a lot of minor-in-screen-time-but-major-in-plot characters so it'll be a bit of a series, I think.

• When I started shipping them: hey did you guys know theres a chin tilt™ in the movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle Of The Realms (2021) that Ive seen this january of the year 2022

• My thoughts: I hate them so much. theyre perfect foils in almost every way you can think of. they have an extremely appealing enemies-to-friends arc. in fact they tick most of the enemies-to-friends-to-lovers dynamics in one way or another, in one incarnation or another. with the multiple timelines deal you can even sprinkle a little bit of soulmates trope in there. you cannot have one without the other in the general consciousness. theyre perfect opposites and so similar at the same time. their shared storyline is Romantic with a capital R, with its fair share of drama, revelations, guilt, duty, honor, and conflicted feelings, two assassin clans alike in dignity, in fair earthrealm where we lay our scene. theyre LITERALLY fire and ice and everything about them just bring you back to that point. AND theyre both stupid pretty on top of that.

• What makes me happy about them: they were grown in a lab for 30 years to appeal to me personally💙💛 literally tick every single boxes

• What makes me sad about them: if they werent two guys they wouldve been canon ages ago and you know it

• Things done in fanfic that annoys me: mischaracterization in favor of the author's personal fantasies, usually sexual. Sucks so much when a good fic or a good concept gets ruined by them being OOC during (sometimes uneeded) sexy times. I know thats like, 90% of the fics on AO3 but still, lemme mourn.

• Things I look for in fanfic: if we're going Legends or OG timeline, you can never go wrong with a good old devoted protector scorpion. If we're going current timeline, oooh babey gimme that grandmasters middle age mutual pining, sometimes keeping things simple is where its at.

• My wishlist: so fun fact, most of my wishlist already kinda happened, thanks snowblind but literally everything before it. So I guess I would really just like to see the two of them interact in a casual setting for once, see how theyd normally interact. Second would be cuddles and kisses ofc.

• Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Im a subsmoke enjoyer but ONLY in a tragic doomed teenage romance kinda way, two boy best friends in an extremely restrictive environment that forbid close bonds let alone intimate, come on. Other than that... kuai has stupid chemistry with a lot of characters but in the actual story i dont see a lot of potential candidates. As for hanzo, I like him with harumi ngl, if he manages to get his family back good for him, but just like kuai, the ninjas are pretty isolated otherwise and have the closest narrative bond with each other so if not with the other well I dont think Id see it :/

• My happily ever after for them: Legends/OG timelime wise, scorpy continues to play guardian angel with benefits while kuai gives him a purpose, current timeline is the two grandmasters accidentaly making their clans more and more alike due to them sharing a similar mindset, which could perhaps eventually end with them reuniting the clans as it once was, as joint grandmasters wink wink. but my personal favorite is the mk9 sub zero ending where both of them "disappear together into legends" and are just living together in a little house in the middle of nowhere when theyre not avenging the innocents. and disappear even more into legends when they both get to the netherrealm killing the shit out of everything in sight there.

🎀give yourself a compliment about your own writing

Hmm, I'm gonna get weirdly specific, but I think I really like how I portray characters on a downward spiral. Patton in Just Out of Reach, Virgil in Low Battery, even Logan in a Moment with Potential to some extent. I love slowly pulling them apart, and the strange ways I can describe it. It's fun, and forces me to really get in their heads.

🎉how often do you celebrate completing & posting a work? how often do you give yourself the credit/validation that you seek from others when you post? (if you don't, you should!)

Interesting question, usually when I post a chapter, I throw my phone across the room and play a video game to avoid thinking about it. It's a nice way to release it and let my brain relax. I celebrate later by posting about it or responding to comments, because those are quite the reward!

💞what's the most important part of a story for you? the plot, the characters, the worldbuilding, the technical stuff (grammar etc), the figurative language

The characters!!!! It's all about the characters babey. Their goals, their needs, their preconceived notions about themselves, who they are vs what they think they are!!!! What is stopping them from being happy!!! I just Love Characters!!!

🍭why did you start writing

We're going WAY back, okay. So I started writing at a really young age, but only for short periods of time. I wrote a LotR inspired (ripoff) fantasy book at like nine on construction paper, at 13 I wrote a short story about cults, at 14 I wrote a few chapters about a magical trio of friends (still on Wattpad somewhere I think) and then in 2021, started writing fics. Writing has always been an outlet for me, even back then. I'd be filled with so much love for a book, or a story, or multiple ones at once, and I would channel that love into creating something of my own.

🎙️which one of your fics would you like someone to make a pod-fic of?

That would be pretty cool, hadn't thought much about it, but probably Low Battery, for several reasons. It's the most well known, and I think the different settings and long conversations could be interesting as a podfic, but admittedly I haven't listened to many of them, so idk.

🕯️was there a fic that was really hard on you to write, or took you to a place you didn't think it would take you?

I think Low Battery gets this one too. It was my first multi chaptered fic, and the first time I ever completed something longer that 2000 words. Oddly enough, I learned things about myself writing it. Not to delve too deep into the plot, but everyone has issues and everyone is forced to confront them. I think I got to channel so many parts of myself into the sides, and it was sometimes hard to keep going, because of how real it was to me. I don't regret it, and I did adore writing it, but yeah there's a lot of me hidden in there.

I actually really like vi and caitlyn in lol, caitlyn mains unite babey

both lol caitlyn and vi are more morally gray, caitlyn is like, very clearly a person in position of leadership, I think her lol version is kind of like mel actually dhdhj out of the three of them she's the closest to her arcane version I would say but her backstory is obv changed significantly (cause she's already been an enforcer and corina doesn't exist in arcane)

I higkey love lol vi despite hating her goofy ass design because I'm a hater at heart always but she's just so funny, so fuckable, her voice lines are top always hdhdhsj there's a lol short story "child of zaun" that is an insight into vis relationship with zaun and piltover and she's so!!!

caitlyn and vi are truly peak cunt4cunt energy and nobody ever allows them their full mean lesbian couple power but i respect lol for letting them be cunty and messy to some extent

lol jinx is like, eh to me, like I think all the changes they made to her character are due to arcane and in collab with arcane but her lol version is really just saur random rawr I eated your cookie manic fantasy sjshjsjsj like if you think of a bad characterization of harley quinn that's basically the hand they dealt jinx with a lot. but I think as they added her backstory and some depth her dynamics with other champions became more interesting and she's also v cute in cinematics. we're not gonna talk about that time she fucked a yordle

I can kind of see them making arcane jinx become the person she is in lol - lol jinx is a somewhat softer version of her, shes much less bloodthirsty and doesn't actually dabble in mass murder jdhsjsjsk like I can see her going through a character journey where she still blows shit up but chills with the murder

21. What tarot would your PC be?  Oh, i am FAR from a tarot expert but im pulling from my growing knowledge / understanding and doing some quick readings and i think Tetch has a Knight of Wands vibe? He's very much An Adventurer, there's a reason he's here and not having a respectable halfling crafter career and its because he likes the new situations, action, things happening, etc, but also with all his intelligence, he doesnt have the laser guided focus of a Knight Of Swords, more assosciated with pure intellect- he's passionate and jumpy and creative but also sometimes foolishly and dangerously hasty. thats both where his Big Fails and -1 wis come from, but also why Wild Magic seems to be. actually working quite well for him- his high charisma was mostly about taking things and people in good stride and returning the same, but it has evolved into Vibing With The Universe, apperently, see "inspired action".

12. If your PC had to set up a date, what would they plan for it?

Oh boy. remember how i just said his charisma is sooo high?

Q1: First of all, introduce us to your project! What is it about?

Snakeroot is a very self-indulgent story about monsters, haunted forests, and surviving when the odds are stacked against you. In other words, it's basically a D&D storyline I packed into a modern(ish) fantasy IF format so I'd have even more of an excuse to draw and write about some OCs.

If we're talking actual plot, though, you basically play as a monster-hunter with missing memories & mysterious powers, fighting against the effects of a magical curse that distorts land and creatures alike. You start the game with an assignment that takes you to the edge of a Barrier, which keeps most of the curse under control, except oops! There's a part of the barrier that's broken! Lucky you've got a whole team there with you, but guess you'll have to deal with that, huh?

Q2: If it’s not too spoilery, what are you most excited about your project?

Ooh, it's tough to choose! There's a few interesting confrontations maybe towards (?) the centre of the plot that'll be fun to see played out, something along the lines of the protagonist uncovering some things about themselves, their memories, and their companions. I'm also definitely looking forward to seeing the routes that people will take through these, since it — at some points — will probably become somewhat of a balancing act. Haunted forests and magical curses are certainly a fun type of setting to work with!

Q3: What inspired the current project you’re working on?

It's basically a D&D campaign idea that I've had for a while, adapted and morphed into a shorter (ideally) and more compact (hopefully) format for IF. That being said, some part of me starting out was deeply committed to the idea of having it in a modern-esque setting, likely due to playing in a friend's Monster of the Week campaign at the time, so I've ended up at a weird in-between original setting that jumps all over the place sometimes. I think I've mentioned before that I binged a good deal of Final Fantasy playthroughs as I started as well, so I reckon that aesthetics-wise with technology, that's definitely come through with the sort of fun rule-of-cool vibe they have going on. It's all vibes, babey!

Q4: Do you pull from your own identity for inspiration? How has that been reflected in your work?

I don't think there's much of an explicit link to my identity in Snakeroot as much as I've seen other games directly address theirs, but that being said, I wouldn't be surprised if someone pointed out some implicit ways in which it bleeds through.

If I think about it in terms of the setting, I think to some point, the land in which Snakeroot takes place is somewhat shaped by where I grew up — Singapore — in which there were often surprisingly dense pockets of forest bordering the school, the back of the house, or places I frequented with friends, considering how built-up the city itself actually is. I have a habit of walking the dog late at night, so every so often I'd be struck with that ominous feeling of being watched as I walk along a particularly dark treeline, and maybe that stuck with me!

Where I live now has far less of that sort of forest / jungle-y vibe, which makes me kind of miss it, so maybe the real friends we made along the way were the definitely-not-normal owls blinking back at you when you past the treeline for too long.

Identity-wise, I'm not sure I've drawn much in terms of like, a direct connection to Singapore in addressing the dynamics of the country itself, but I do like to see representation in the stories I tell, so for instance, the Luo siblings are Chinese (or Chinese-coded, considering the original setting), one of which is canonically trans.

That being said, these aren't portrayed as a huge story element in the sense that their stories are about being Chinese or being trans, in Mallory's case — that's not what Snakeroot is about — but these are parts of their identity that make them part of who they are. It's just nice to see yourself represented in some way in any story, really, even if I think it's personally unfair that I don't have cool horns or a sword or magic glowy eyes.

Q5: What’s been your experience so far? With writing, with the if community...

Honestly, it's been really positive! The IF community has been amazingly welcoming, and I doubt I would've gotten half as far without any of the sense of support and community both fellow authors and readers have created. Writing is always shaky thanks to the good ol' writer insecurity and the occasional curse of imposters syndrome that haunts me every odd weekend or so when I can sit down and work on Snakeroot between schoolwork, but the support definitely helps!

Q6: Do you have any future projects in the works?

I've been playing around with a sci-fi type game about an android-clone protagonist who has to solve the mystery of their original's murder, with a more linear story and just one main companion — something about coded loyalty and the demands made of yourself and being a not-quite-ghost. I definitely do want to revisit it the moment I have more time!

Q7: Finally, what piece of advice would you give to fellow authors?

Find some writer buddies! Or reader buddies, whatever works. Everything's better with friends, and the support and solidarity is honestly invaluable.
