The Last Strawberry Summer
8-page Short Story
:)
“Bill?”
“What’s the matter?”
“There’s somethin’ I’ve been meanin’ to tell you. For a while now.” “What’s that, honey?”
“I…”
“Spit it out–what is it?”
“I’ve kept it a secret for a while now and–”
“Thirty years of marriage and we still have goddamn secrets, Suzie? I haven’t got a goddamn thing you don’t know.”
“I’ve been meanin’ to. I swear it. It just kept slippin’ and well–ya know–here we are now.”
“So–let’s hear it hun–I’m waitin’.”
Susan placed a finger on her lips and stood up from the couch. She paced to the window and peeked out the blinds at the fields of strawberries under the Indiana sunset. They grew well this year–maybe the best crop they’d ever had. She looked at the porch they had installed together, the first year they bought the house–and the land. How hard it was nailing in that veranda!
“There’s no good way to tell you this, Bill.”
Bill stood up from the wood rocking chair. It took him a few tries, pushing up from the armrest and clutching his lower spine with his left hand. Susan stared at him and watched. He hobbled to the kitchen cupboard and wedged a glass under the tap. When it was filled to the brim he let the glass remain, noticing the sweet scent flowing through his body. Next to the sink laid their best knife on top of the cutting board. Strawberry stems were still stuck to the blade. Red stained the cutting board and the pure aroma that had been ingrained in him lingered about the kitchen. He had made her pick and cut up a few for him that morning, since she wouldn’t let him do it himself. Susan’s eyes followed his hand as he set the glass on the countertop.
“Didn’t take your pills?”
“To hell with them pills.”
“You gotta take ‘em.”
“They don’t work for shit. What good’s it do?”
“The doc said you hafta, Bill. They’re only gonna help ya.”
“I won’t. I won’t have ‘em. Haven’t done a damn thing for me since they drew down the dosage.”
“You can’t have those anymore. They told you.”
“Can’t have anything, then. Might as well blow my back out for good. It’d do you better. I might be in so much pain I won’t care about this damn secret.”
“Oh–don’t say that. You know I want to tell ya. Can’t find the words to,” she said. “Won’t ya stop working? That back of yours can’t take it and you know it. We don’t need the farm anymore, Bill. We’ve got more than enough to live off of. We don’t need it anymore, Bill.”
“It’s not about needing, Susan. It never was.”
“It’s become ‘bout needin’. Dammit Bill, you don’t get it. Right–that’s it–I’m putting my foot down. I won’t let you throw your back out for a crop we don’t need. It’s done, Bill. I won’t let ya.”
“Do what now?”
“I won’t let you. ‘Less you want a divorce–that’s how important this is to me. That’s how important you are to me, Bill. I can’t watch you wreck yourself. I won’t let ya.”
Bill stared at Susan and rose the glass to his lips. He looked out the kitchen window at the blood-red fruit covering the soil like a carpet. The sensation of their prickly but soft texture–and their leafy stems and the sound they made when he pulled them off and how they looked when he held them high up in his hands against the daybreak skyline and the feeling of picking each individual strawberry and knowing that they were his, they were his–reverberated in his head. They were his. His strawberries.
“Okay. Alright–if that’s what you think, Suze–you don’t give me much of a choice, do ya?”
“‘Less you want to hire those men down from the town? We’d still turn a big profit on this pull. They wouldn’t go to waste that way.”
“Yeah, no. You know what I think about lettin’ others on our crop.”
“I know. I thought I’d try, though. I’ve never seen ‘em this red. It’s a shame.”
“It doesn’t hafta be a shame.”
“No, Bill–what did I tell you–ya aren’t touchin’ another strawberry from this farm. I’m drivin’ up to the market tomorrow morning. I could take a look at what they have there for ya? At least get you something.”
“Yeah, no. You know I don’t want that commercial crap–it ain’t mine.”
“I know. But I feel like I needa do somethin’ for you. I just can’t let you back out on that field. I don’t know what would happen to you with one more harvest. I’m afraid there wouldn’t be anything left of ya.”
“You don’t need to do anything for me, Suze.”
Bill downed the rest of his glass and placed it in the sink. Before heading to the bedroom, he peered back out at the strawberry-filled fields glistening under the summer sunset. He smiled one last time and walked away from the window.
Bill and Susan laid in bed in silence. Susan had turned a horror flick on the television. Susan rolled onto her side facing Bill. He was staring at the ceiling.
“I can’t let you out for the harvest tomorrow.”
His eyes didn’t waver from the ceiling. She could see it–she knew how much it was hurting him.
“I can’t, Bill. I care too much about you.”
“They’ll rot.”
“You’ll rot.”
“Some things take priority.” He smiled. “Some things are more valuable than me.”
“You are more valuable to me. Bill, you said you wouldn’t. You told me you wouldn’t. I told you how important this is to me and you said you wouldn’t. Please–Bill.”
“You’re right Suze. I did say that.”
“Then you won’t? You won’t go out tomorrow?”
“That’s what I said. My back won’t let me anyways. I hope to get out of bed tomorrow, let alone get outside.”
“That’s good, then–then you can’t anyways.”
“It’s about time, isn’t it? For the last surgery.”
“It is.”
“When was it again?”
“Day after tomorrow. Seven A.M.”
“Right. Day after tomorrow.”
Bill took his eyes off the ceiling and reached for his glass. He brought the water to his lips and took a sip. He turned to put the glass back on the nightstand but a sharp pain struck his lower disc. Bill winced and the glass fell out of his hands, spilling over the carpet.
“Fuck.”
“Hun–lay back–stop that.”
“Can’t even put a glass of fucking water down.”
“It’s okay. I’ll fetch a towel.”
Bill stared back at the ceiling as Susan took a towel out from the bathroom. She set the glass back on the nightstand and put the towel over the spot on the carpet. Susan picked up the remote from his nightstand and switched the television off. She got under the covers and turned the lamp on her nightstand off. She couldn’t tell if he was still staring at the ceiling or not.
“You won’t, right?”
“That’s what I said, isn’t it?”
“I know. But you won’t, right?”
“That’s what I told you.”
“Ok–alright then.” She put a hand on his side. “I know you want it more than anything right now–I know. But I don’t know how much pain I would be in if you did. I’m scared–Bill. I’m terrified. Your back can’t take another harvest–you can barely get around the house. And I–I can’t imagine how hurt I would be to see you like that. And I don’t want that. And right before your surgery. Please–Bill–promise you won’t. Promise me. I won’t be able to take that pain. I can’t.”
“That’s what I said. I don’t want to see you in pain over me either, Suze.”
“Ok.”
Susan took her hand back and turned away from Bill. She didn’t want to face him while she slept. She felt like the more she looked at him–the more she faced him–the more she knew how much he wanted it. Susan thought that–if she faced him any longer–she would see more and more how much he wanted it and she would give in, she would let him go out and pick in the field, she would let him blow his back out for good this time. She wouldn’t let that happen. She stayed to her side of the bed, facing the wall. Susan closed her eyes and thought back to when they first bought the land. Newlyweds working the fields, fixing the house, starting a life. They worked so hard–so hard–and they could relax now. But that glint in his eyes she saw the first day they stepped foot on the field never faded. He still had that look about him. Something that went beyond wanting a comfortable life for the two of them. Something he desired more. Something she didn’t entirely understand. Susan smiled and prayed–that everything would be alright–and forced herself to sink into the pillow.
Susan woke up naturally before the sun rose the next morning. She rolled over, finding Bill fast asleep, and let out a sigh of relief as she inched out of bed, barely lifting the covers, listening to Bill’s breath. She skipped brushing her teeth and grabbed the clothes she had set out the night before on her nightstand. Tip-toeing out the door, she turned the doorknob soundlessly, glanced at the bed one last time. Still snoring.
Susan snuck the door close until she heard the click and slipped into her garments, slid her jacket on with a sort of smoothness. Each move–each action–she performed with elegance, almost rehearsed. Breakfast got skipped. She rushed right past the kitchen. She wanted to get out of the house–didn’t want to take any chances–and find him fast asleep when she came back.
Through the living room, down the hall, and out the door–out the door. Opened, closed, locked, double-checked, she was out. Susan made it to the car and got in, careful to close the door. She turned the ignition key and fastened her seatbelt–there wasn’t time to let the car warm up. Leave. Get out. Get away. It was perfect. Everything was perfect.
She let the car roll. She made it out of the driveway, onto the main road far enough, until she could no longer see the house, and the fences around the fields, or see their neighbors, and their neighbors’ neighbors, and she was certain she could not wake him–almost certain, she hoped.
Bill hadn’t dreamt in years, but knew it was one immediately. Rubbing his boots around in the brown soil, blood-red strawberries shining under the morning sun. Bill grinned a face he hadn’t been able to make in years and gazed up at the sunlight he had seen on so many harvests; his heart jumped with excitement. Accustomed to his poor back, he started with a stroll. But the pain was gone–he was in dreamland. He found himself pacing, then jogging and he broke out sprinting through the fields!
Green leaves atop red strawberries–heaven on earth! A few made their way off their stems and into his mouth and he remembered that sweet summer sensation with a hint of sour he had forgotten. It all rushed back to his mind at once. He was in dreamland–dreamland! Strawberries dropped one by one into his stomach and he felt at home–felt at peace.
Bill came to a stop at the center intersection of the field. He spun round and round and absorbed his life’s work. Each color, each shape, each fruit. All his. He smiled and smiled like he had when he first tilled the soil and planted his first crop, all those years ago. Bill lowered himself to the ground and laid down on the dirt, soaking it up. He shut his eyes and let the sun warm his eyelids and he couldn’t get the smile off his face. He laid for a while in awe and in nostalgia.
This must be joy, Bill thought.
Susan flew off the main road into the driveway and screeched to a halt. The car door swung open and she jumped out. She didn’t close it; she ran into the house. Susan fumbled the keys out of her pocket. They dropped and fell to the ground with a clink.
“Shit–shit,” she said.
Susan snatched them up and searched for the silver key she needed. Why now? Why hadn’t she taken it off her keychain? She scoured through each key two–three–four times. There! There! She nabbed it between her index finger and thumb and the rest of the keys went limp on the bottom of the chain. She wiped a drop of sweat away and fitted the key in the lock. Open! Finally open!
Susan spun the key and left the front door open. She dashed into the living room, and was headed through the kitchen when she realized she wouldn’t need to go all the way to the bedroom. That was when Susan realized she was too late. That she never should have gone out that morning. That she should have stayed with him. Frozen, she stared at the shattered glass door that led onto the back porch. The back porch that led to the fields. Stupid, terrible fucking fields.
Glass shards covered the floor. Susan sifted her feet through them, taking one big step onto the porch. Green plants shrouded her vision. She spanned the whole field, but didn’t have to look that hard for him. She ran back into the house, stepping over the mess of broken glass bits.
“Shit–shit–shit!”
She yanked the telephone off the kitchen wall and dialed 9-1-1. She suffocated the speaker with her ear and listened to its ring. Each second, each ring, felt like she was waiting a lifetime. It rang and rang and rang.
“9-1-1, what is–”
“An ambulance–I need an ambulance!”
“Ma’am, please calm down. What is the emergency?”
“I need an ambulance–my husband–my husband,” Susan panted. “He–he might be unconscious–or dead–or I don’t know–I need an ambulance!”
“OK, ma’am. Is he breathing?”
“Is he breathing? I don’t know–I don’t know–I need an ambulance! Send an ambulance!”
“OK, ma’am. Please stay calm. Could you tell me your address?”
“Yes–yes I can. 22 Fragaria Road–that’s the address. The big white house on the other side of Brittany Road in front of the strawberry farm. Come quick–really quick–as quick as you can!”
“OK, ma’am. We’re on the way. We’ll be there as quick as we can–”
Susan dropped the telephone from her ear and ran back out the door, down the porch steps, onto the dirt. She ran past hundreds and hundreds of strawberries, leaves and stems and fruit and dirt and there he was–center of the field like the farm branched out from him–laid down in his blue jeans, brown boots, red-black flannel shirt, and the biggest grin she had seen in decades. His eyes were closed and he held his straw hat on his stomach.
“Bill!” she cried, reaching him. “How? How did you get out? How? Why? Why would you do this? Why?”
She fell to her knees and shook him.
“Why? You said you wouldn’t! You promised!”
Her eyes were watered and her nose was runny. She shook him again and again. He didn’t move.
“I know I didn’t trust you. I had locked those doors for a reason. I had those locks prepared for weeks, Bill. Weeks!” she smeared tears away from her face. “I thought those locks would stop you. I did. I don’t know why I did. But I did. I thought you would figure what’s best and go back to bed. For me. By God was I a fool. I shoulda known it would happen. I shoulda never gone. To think you would smash the door open. I shoulda known. You’d do anything to get out, wouldn’t you? Anything. Make empty promises to me. I knew it–I knew you were lying–and I still left. Why did I leave? Why, Bill? Why? Why did you do this? Why did you do this to me?”
Bill laid still. A smile from ear to ear. Soundless. Susan sobbed and wept. She pounded her right fist against the dirt and caressed his cheek with her other hand.
“Fuck. Fuck. Bill–Bill! Please!”
Motionless.
“Bill! Please! I never told you the secret! Please–Bill! Is that why? I swear–I swear I’ll tell it! I swear I’ll do anything–anything! I can’t live without you–please–please. Bill–I can’t take it–I can’t take this.”
Susan rose to her feet and ran back toward the house. She ran past strawberries upon strawberries and made up her mind–she couldn’t take it anymore. She stepped through the broken door and stomped on the glass, into the kitchen. She found their cutting knife next to the sink and walked back to the glass door. On her way back out, she picked up the biggest shard she could find. One round piece different to the others stuck out to her so she picked it up. For some reason it was wet, but she didn’t think anything of it.
On the veranda, Susan looked straight through the field to Bill. She bawled in hysteria, and she no longer paid mind to the snot that flooded down her nostrils, mixed with the streams of tears. Now she was done–she had made up her mind–that was it. Susan lifted the shard of glass in her left hand up to her neck, and the knife in front of her chest with her right. Looking one last time at Bill’s silhouette hundreds of yards away in the middle of the field, she grieved in her loneliness.
Were they really that important?
At once both hands made contact and Susan dropped to the floor. The shard lacerated her flesh and blood splattered out of her neck while her shirt and jacket were engulfed with a dark red puddle. She spat blood out of her mouth as her consciousness faded, staring at the porch roof.
Did they really mean that much?
Bill woke to a man knelt beside him and distant sirens blaring. The man had two fingers on Bill’s wrist and his eyes glued to his watch. He noticed Bill try to move but kept staring at his watch.
“Sir, now that you’re awake, please stay calm. My name is Charles. I’m here to help you.”
“Charles. What the hell are you doing? Where the hell am I?”
“Sir, we received a distress call from your wife. We’re here to help you.”
“Where the hell am I?”
“Your farm, I presume, sir.”
“How the hell did I get here?”
“Do you feel lightheaded, sir? Short of breath?”
“No–no I don’t,” he said, checking his surroundings. “I feel the best I have in years, actually.”
Charles took his hand off Bill’s wrist and stood up. He offered him a hand, and Bill took it, standing up. He looked around at the strawberries and noticed the sun was a quarter of the way done for the day.
“Your heart rate is normal. Do you feel any pain? Loss of senses?”
“No, no. I feel better than I did yesterday.”
Bill looked toward the house and saw an ambulance parked on the dirt. A swarm of paramedics and police officers crowded the veranda. They started walking toward the house, and Bill was astonished to realize he didn’t have trouble walking like he normally did. Charles’s radio muffled and he grabbed it from his waist.
“Headed to the house with the older gentleman. No problems. Report on conditions?”
“She’s gone. We’ve confirmed.”
Charles latched the radio back onto his waist. He paused for a moment to wait for Bill’s reaction, but he didn’t have any.
“I’m incredibly sorry for your loss, sir. We’re able to assist you with anything you might need.”
Bill kept walking without expression. Approaching the veranda, Bill stared at the broken glass door and the broken glass pieces and the swarm of paramedics lifting a body on a stretcher–Susan’s body–which was painted a dark red from the chest down. Purple-red flesh exposed her throat. Her head was tilted back like it had detached from her body and her mouth was covered with dried blood. The paramedics reeled her in the back, and Bill caught a waft of strawberry scent as she passed by him. Bill watched a younger woman get in the back and motion toward him.
“Would you like to ride with us, sir?”
Bill stared down the woman without changing his expression–fixed in place. The woman outstretched her hand with a worried look. Bill didn’t move.
“We’ll take your name and phone number, sir,” Charles said. “And we’ll be in contact with you.”
Charles waved toward the woman. Bill watched the woman miss the door handle once, and when she reached the second time and grabbed it she looked away from Bill, closing the door tight. Charles gave Bill a pen and the back of a form to write on. He scribbled a few times, folded it up, gave it back. Charles placed the pen and paper in his back pocket and got in the passenger seat. Bill stood in the same place and watched the ambulance cruise around the side of the house, and then gone. Bill turned around with that same expressionless face and took in the sprawling bright red strawberry farm before him. He found a smirk on his face and walked into the endless field, never looking back at the white house he no longer needed.

Panic. Pure panic. That’s all I felt as I watched my best friend dive into the water at Lover’s Lake.
“What the hell is he doing?” I asked myself.
“Going for a swim, maybe?” Dustin said.
I looked at him, an unamused look on my face. “Not the time to be sarcastic. I mean, there’s a Gate down there! What if he gets sucked in?!”
Dustin grinned, which told me he knew something. Turning towards him a little, I said, “Spill it, twerp. I know you know something.”
“Oh, nothing,” he said, a grin still ever present on his face. “Just the fact that you like Steve.”
My mouth dropped open, not wanting to believe what I was hearing. Finally letting my brain catch up a little, I scoffed, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Uh-huh, sure.”
I looked back out at the water at hearing water splashing, seeing Steve hanging on the side of the boat. He was saying something to the other three older teens in the boat that I couldn’t make out.
Hearing cops, the four us ducked down behind a fallen tree branch. A few seconds went by before I faintly heard water splashing, and looked out towards the water, sighing in relief.
“Lover boy is fine, we’ve got bigger problems to worry about,” Dustin whispered.
Robin’s voice came through the walkie talkie, saying, “Dustin, you’re a goddamn Einstein! Steve found the gate–”
At the sound of her voice, I whispered to Dustin for him to turn it off. “We need a plan to lure the cops away from the lake.”
“We can’t let them find Eddie,” Lucas said.
“Follow me,” Max said. “Hey, officers! I found the killer!”
She started running before I whispered, “Maxine!” Grunting in frustration, I told the boys to follow, which they did. “She's gonna get us arrested.”
~~~
So, upon our little run through the woods, Dustin ended up tripping on some branches which resulted with the cops catching up to us… which also resulted in us getting transported back to the Wheeler’s house by said cops.
We were all in the living area with our parents, cops included, being interrogated. I was letting the kids take rein on this one. I wanted to see what lie they could come up with on the spot.
“What exactly were you all doing at the Lake?” Chief Powell asked.
I looked at the kids on the couch, smugly.
Dustin started with, “It’s comp–” before Max stepped in and said, “We were just going for a walk.”
“A walk?” Callahan said. “At 9pm?”
“To the lake!” Dustin said, voice squealing. “We were gonna… take a little swim. Little night swim.”
“Oh, my god,” I sighed, quietly.
“Dusty,” Mom said. “Someone was just murdered out there.”
“We didn’t realize it until we got there,” I said, all eyes now on me. “That’s why I didn’t make them swim. I saw Dustin sneak out, so I followed him and these two out to the Lake.”
“Was Nancy with you at this night swim?” Mrs. Wheeler asked.
“We’re not sure. I mean, she could’ve been.”
“She was there,” Dustin said. “Then she left. It’s all a little confusing.”
“That’s when you guys came,” Lucas said.
“Then they dared me to say what I said,” Max said.
“I was there to make sure these twerps didn’t swim,” I added.
“You’re lucky you didn’t get shot,” Mr. Wheeler said.
“Have you had any contact with Eddie?” Chief Powell asked.
“That psycho freak killer?” I chuckled, crossing my arms. “You’re joking, right? Anyone who has ever had contact with that D&D playing nerd is bound for the nerd table at lunch.”
“That’s a bunch of bull,” Erica said, to which her parents said her name with a warning tone. “You realize they’re lying, right? The whole couch is on fire.” Her parents said her name again to which she replied, “Just the facts!”
“Girl, that is your catchphrase,” I said.
Mom looked between me and Dustin, asking, “Kids, are you two lying to these policemen?”
“Why would I lie?” I asked at the same time Dustin said, “No!”
“Lying to the police is a crime,” Mr. Sinclair said.
“Just like running from a fight, and buying cigarettes,” Callahan said, looking at me.
“Oh, my god! That was two and a half years ago! I quit smoking,” I said, pausing at the end before saying, “Sort of.”
“Y/N/N,” Mom said, shocked.
“The fire is consuming us,” Erica said.
I walked away after Erica made her statement, the feeling in the room overwhelming me. I went to the kitchen and placed my hands on the island, hanging my head and taking deep breaths. My best friend should’ve been back now with information about the Gate.
“Come on, Steve,” I whispered to myself. “Where are you?”
~~~
“Why would they open up a gate at Lover’s Lake?” Erica asked.
I was sitting at the table in the dining room, head resting on my hand, listening to their conversation. When I heard someone mention the commies, I blocked out almost the rest of the conversation until Dustin said, “How did Watergate open up?”
I thought about it for a moment, picking my head up. “As far as we know, only two gates have opened up. One by El, and one by the commies. But it wasn’t either one this time, so…” I stopped my train of thought, not sure where I was going with it.
“There’s one thing we’ve never understood,” Dustin said, walking in my direction.
“Why Vecna’s killing people,” I said. “Like, what’s his motive killing teens? It just seems too random.”
“Too prosaic,” he said.
“Don’t get high and mighty with your vocabulary. Plus, how does the Mind Flayer fit into this?” Why I brought that up, I’m not sure.
“Maybe this is it,” Dustin said. “This is the answer.”
“You’re losing me,” I said. I followed them to stand by the stairs as Dustin said, “Just hear me out. How did El open the Mothergate?”
“With her mind?” I said.
“No, she contacted the Demogorgon,” Lucas said.
“But, my sister is partially correct,” Dustin said. “Just like…?”
“Vecna when he casts his spells.”
“What if with each kill, he’s not simply killing them, but making a powerful psychic connection with his victims?”
Picking up on what Dustin was explaining, I added, “A connection powerful enough to rip a hole in the fabric of space and time. Therefore, opening more gates.”
Dustin looked at me and said, “Bingo.”
~~~
A little more conversation happened before we ended up back in the dining area, myself and the Sinclair siblings sitting at the table.
“How and why was there a gate at Lover’s Lake?” Dustin asked.
“I don’t know, Dusty,” I said, exasperated.
“Well, let’s analyze,” he said. “What do Vecna and Eleven have in common?”
Once he started going about what they have in common, I looked off behind him at the lights, seeing a couple of them getting brighter. Thinking I was going insane, I thought nothing of it… until it happened again.
I waited until it happened for a third time, noticing a pattern. Dustin stood in front of me, blocking my view. “Move, you little shit.” I stood up and said, “Since you’re talking about Vecna, he might be here. Or–” I watched the pattern more thoroughly. “S. O. S. Dusty, they’re using Morse Code!”
“They were stupid enough to go through Watergate,” Dustin said.
I instructed them to go get something with lights and to meet me in Nancy’s room. Once they came back, Dustin and I started placing the little Lite Brite pegs onto the board. Once that was done, Dustin told Lucas to plug it in before him and Erica came and kneeled behind us.
“You guys seeing this?” Dustin asked loudly.
The board got really bright, and I got really happy, Dustin and I laughing and hugging.
“We’re not gonna move it, but we’re gonna unplug it,” I said. “Standby.”
“Yank it,” Dustin said, to which Lucas unplugged the device from the wall.
“Try it now, guys,” I said.
Line after line showed up, the letters H and I coming through the device. “HI. Oh, my god. Hi!”
I was so excited and happy to know that all my friends were alive that I had tears in my eyes.
“You guys, Y/N’s crying,” Dustin laughed.
“Shut up, I’m happy,” I said.
The word STUCK came through next.
“They’re stuck in the Upside Down,” Lucas said.
“You can’t get back through Watergate?” Dustin asked.
It was a few seconds before another message came through. GUARDED.
“Watergate’s guarded,” I said. “Damn it.”
“We have a theory to help with that,” Dustin said.
“Watergate isn’t the only gate,” I said. “There’s a gate at every murder site.” A question mark came through. “Seriously? You all are my age! Use your brains! Go to Eddie’s trailer! Get on the bikes and go to Eddie’s!” I looked at the kids and said, “Come on!”
“Wait, there’s six of us, but only four bikes,” Lucas said.
“Someone can ride with me or you, but we have to get there fast. If we leave right now, we’ll be there at the same time.”
We went downstairs, seeing Max and motioning for her to come with us. Quietly exiting the garage with our bikes, we started to pass the cars before one of the cops shouted at us. Erica punched holes in the tires of their vehicles as four of us rode off on our bikes, Erica riding with Lucas.
~~~
“This shit has to work,” I said, grabbing a broom.
“Just hit it hard enough to break it open,” Dustin said. “Break it!”
I grunted in frustration while sending the end of the broom upwards into the Gate that was created at Chrissy’s murder site.
When I tell you it felt like I was high on weed, it felt like I was high on weed. We were looking up into the Gate, as the other four… looked up into the Gate.
“God, this is trippy,” I muttered. I smiled, though, when I saw Steve. “Oh, my god, hi!”
“Bada-bada-boom!” Dustin said.
“Never ever say that again,” I said, looking back down at my brother. “Okay, uhm, get some sheets.”
“Why?” Max asked.
“We’re gonna tie them together and hope that the physics on this works, and also get a mattress.”
“Again, why?”
“For safe landing.”
We all quietly got to work on finding sheets and a mattress. As I tied the last sheet together, I had Dustin help me carry it the two feet to the Gate. We looked at each other and said, “Here goes nothing,” before we both launched the sheets up in the Gate.
Physics was apparently on our side today because it totally worked! I clapped and said, “Yes!” before Robin grabbed their end and started pulling herself up… and then dropped down onto the mattress.
“That was fun,” she said. She got up and immediately hugged me.
“Oh, my god!” I exclaimed. “You’re okay. You’re alive!” I looked up and asked, “Who’s next?”
My question was answered at seeing Eddie grab the sheets, pulling himself up and dropping onto our landing pad. “She’s right. That was fun.”
I looked back up at Nancy and Steve, seeing her unmoving. Steve placed his hands on her shoulders, saying her name and shaking her exactly like he did with Max at the cemetery. “Shit.”
“What?” everyone on this side asked.
“She’s in a trance. Nancy’s in a trance! Vecna has Nancy!”

TCL 2x08 recap
Well, I guess it’s not surprising that I broke my record with this one lol. Honestly this episode made me suffer so goddamn much and I loved every single minute of it.
So in honour of the hiatus this week, have this very belated monster instead lol
Like seriously, you already know you’re ~In For It~ when the ep opens with Thony watching her baby boy sleep like she’s been sitting there practically all night ugh. And then her hurriedly packing a bag with enough clothes to last at least a week or more and not even waiting for the rest of the household to wake up before getting Fi to get them out of there?? God you just know she spent the whole night thinking about the danger she’d put them in, and all the choices she’d made, and now she’s doing what Thony does and Trying To Fix Everything Herself. At least she finally tells Fi a tiny bit more about what’s going on with Garrett and the FBI though (sidenote: I find it really cute to imagine the conversation last night where the family is all ready to go to bed and Garrett is just like ‘oh don’t mind me, I’m just gonna hang here on your couch for a couple hours… any chance you have an iphone charger?’ lol). But ugh I love Fi’s “If we go, we go together” to Thony bc firstly these two and their sisterhood gets me every time, but also it’s reminiscent of Arman’s “We’ll do it together” from 2x07, and now I’m emotional thinking about the fact that for years Thony could only truly rely on herself, and now she is surrounded by people who love her, who want to help carry her burdens with her and who would do anything for her. Plus the whole “Oh so this is about him?” / “No, it’s about you! It’s about our family” exchange is so goddamn amazing because the truth is that it’s both– Fi and the kids are her family, but now Arman is her family too, and she is doing whatever she can to protect them all ughhhhhh
Ugh Chris and Fi continually have such incredible scenes together. I love their dynamic, the conflict and the support and the way that they’re still always a team. There’s such a well done mix of parent-child dynamic (like her reassuring him when he started to freak out that the cops had come back), and a kind-of-team-mates situation (him helping get the kids ready to go to JD’s, etc), which makes a lot of sense for an oldest child and a single parent. Chris has shown before that while he’s definitely a moody teenager lol, when it comes down to it, he really does take that ‘man of the house’ role seriously and if Fi’s biggest protector– like when he got in between her and Marco and defended her when Marco was yelling at her in like 1x09 or whenever that was. Which is probably partly why he ended up going to the police station too, because he couldn’t face her being punished in order to protect him when his whole job (as he sees it) is protecting her.
Honestly this show just loves stomping on my heart– Thony’s face as she says goodbye to Luca just kills me, because it just takes me back to 1x06 and “I just want to hold Luca without thinking it’s going to be the last time, you know?” ughhhh. Back then it was Luca who could be taken from her at any moment, and while tbh that still remains a possibility (whether from rejection of the liver, or one of Kamdar’s men coming after him), now the fear is more that she might be taken from him, that she won’t live to see Luca and the others come home. And god the shot of her standing there alone as they drive away, not even able to force a smile and a wave as they go?? I already feel personally attacked by this episode and we’ve literally only just gotten to the title credits ugh
Ok as much as I hate female characters being killed off to further the development of a male character, I do kind of look forward to seeing what happens with Garrett as a result of all this. Also oooh his suggestion of a mole is interesting– hopefully not Jefferson though, bc he’s cute and I like him haha. I think Garrett might be grasping a bit at the mole idea because if that’s not the case, then he’d have to face the idea that maybe it was him that messed up and left her vulnerable somehow. Also lol getting Kamdar on profiteering is so Al Capone; he’d probably love the idea of following in such famous footsteps. He’d have his lawyers get him off immediately though, bc lbr he can afford the best. But damn Russo’s “[these men are] never the ones pulling the trigger”-- don’t we know that all too well ugh
Of course Thony is doing housework lol– I’m going to take that as a subtle throwback to 1x01, when she was frantically cleaning the kitchen after Theo’s murder and Fi said that she does this when she’s spinning out. Bc though she looks outwardly calm rn, I definitely think she is spinning out, especially with the way she freezes at the knock on the door. But ugh the way she practically slumps in relief at Arman’s voice just gets to me; she’s there alone, spending every moment in fear of someone coming to hurt or kill her, and then the one person she feels safest around– who has literally proven (twice!) that he’d kill for her– turns up instead. (I’m not crying, you’re crying). Though I’m guessing she was expecting him– from the way they talk about meeting with Garrett, it sounds like they’ve been in communication between last night and now; plus, given that Fi took the van, Thony has no transport to get to any meeting location. But ugh the way he only ventures a few steps into the laundry– far enough that he gets a small glimpse of the rooms beyond, but still not really entering her home, because he has no idea whether he would be welcome in that space or not. And when he sees the neatly made bed that is clearly Luca’s, and hears the kind of eerie silence that never exists in a house full of kids, he knows what she’s given up because of him. I love his “you should have gone with them”– telling her that she doesn’t need to see herself as trapped like he is, and that he wouldn’t blame her if she left, even if it caused Kamdar to retaliate against him. Her safety is what matters to him more than anything else. And then omg when he says he’s going to stay with her (Is anyone else hearing faint strains of ‘Someone To Watch Over Me’ playing in the distance or is that just me??), and she just nods???? (never mind me, I’ll just be over here screaming into a pillow for a few minutes at the idea of them staying there alone together aaaahhh). But also oh man I am obsessed with the fact that the old Thony would have said that she was fine, that she was handling things and she could manage on her own. But now she has learned to trust him, and to let herself rely on him to be there for her. She knows that she’d be safer with him there, and she also knows that he doesn’t have a place of his own at the moment– but above all that, she just wants him there. She needs him, and she’s still hurting for the both of them about what happened last night– you can see it in the way her eyes are less able to hold his, and hear it in “I keep playing it in my mind… what he made you do…” ughhhh. I love her line “maybe we could have done something different” because I could see him instinctively taking that to mean she wished that he had found another way, had made another choice rather than shooting Maya; but she’s actually wishing they’d been able to do something that would have prevented Robert ever using him in that way, would have prevented that pain and burden being put on him. Like I definitely think she is struggling a lot with Maya’s death, but when it plays over in her mind, I don’t think it’s Maya that she’s focused on. I think it’s Arman’s face that she keeps seeing, the panic and then the pain as he realises what he’s going to have to do, and the devastation afterwards, his tears in the car still haunting her. Honestly even though this show hasn’t given us a Thony-crying-in-the-shower scene since the pilot (which is both a good thing and a tragedy, honestly lol), I’m absolutely certain she sobbed in the shower last night after taking off that red dress. Crying for Maya, for Garrett, for herself; but above all, for Arman.
And now, standing here with him in the laundry, she seems like she’s trying not to cry again, her voice all low and her body tense, and it’s only a minute before he cracks and has to reach for her; he’s clearly been holding himself back from her but he just can’t anymore. But ugh the gentleness of the way he touches her arms– instead of just pulling her into an embrace, he basically asks permission to hold her, giving her the chance to either step back and maintain her space, or to lean into his support. And though she hesitates for the tiniest moment– which I’m interpreting as her being afraid to hold him because she feels that if she does, she might not be able to bring herself to let go– she soon gives in and just lets herself have this, lets herself lean into him and wrap her arms around him. Tbh I wasn’t sure at first if her arms were still kind of between them, but after many rewatches I’m convinced she’s definitely holding onto him– and plus I stg there is a sound right before she sighs, like movement against fabric, and I choose to believe the sound mixer person put it in there as the sound of her arms wrapping around him under his jacket lol. And then oh god the sigh. The way she closes her eyes and lets out that breath, lets herself have just those couple of seconds to forget everything else and just be held by him?? Help??
Except ugh that’s all she allows herself– after that one brief moment, her eyes open again and her jaw clenches, and she bites her lip and holds on just that little bit tighter before she forces herself to move back and away, getting them both back on task. And he lets her go immediately– the whole time through the hug he kept his grip light, giving her the control, and honestly the hint of reserve in the way they hold each other makes perfect sense. For him, it’s about not wanting to push her; for her, it’s about protecting herself. She may trust him completely, and be able to rely on him for anything, but she’s careful with her heart, and he’s still married. He’d never deliberately string her along or hurt her, of course, but his situation is still complicated and she doesn’t know what is going to happen. What she does know, though, is that she loves him, and that this might be all she ever gets to have of him.
God it is such a blessing that the caddy is so recognisable (and probably very inefficient in terms of gas lol), because it means that the bike is the go-to choice for transport these days, and I am so supportive of this lol. Not only is it hot, but I am definitely into all the semi-embracing involved haha. Like what’s the bet Thony actually holds him closer than she needs to on the ride, sinking into him in the way she couldn’t allow herself during their hug? And ugh they look like such a sexy matching pair with their jackets (ngl I saw a jacket the other day that looked a fair bit like the one she wears in this ep, and I ended up buying it lol), which just further highlights their partnership as they face off against Garrett. But oh boy, this is awkward: “now we’re going to take Kamdar down for murder. Him, and whoever pulled the trigger [...] I’m going to make sure every one of those bastards rots behind bars” and lol well if they were planning on trying to tell you the truth before, Garrett, they sure ain’t now. And ugh the way Thony stands up to him and says that they can’t help him catch Maya’s killer, and Arman immediately looks at her– possibly wondering if she’s about to tell the truth, but trusting her enough not to try to stop her if she is– and then instead she protects him, using logic to explain to Garrett why they can’t help, yet still lying to him just like she’d said she didn’t want to do. Honestly I love so much that even despite her reluctant regard for Garrett, and the way she feels indebted to him for the ways he’s helped her family (though lbr that’s got to be tempered by the ways in which he has previously also hurt her and her family), there’s no question about which side she’s on. Even from the start, her loyalty to Arman outweighed Garrett’s threats and the power of the law behind him, and though she wants them all to be on the same side, she will protect Arman to the end, even if it means completely betraying Garrett and screwing him over. Still, she and Arman are caught between a rock and a hard place rn, trapped by both Kamdar and by Garrett. But if they can take down one, they can be free of the other, so they agree to set up the meet to trap Kamdar. I love that when he brings out the listening devices (sidenote: they’re cool and I’d probably choose the USB or the necklace lol) Arman immediately refuses to let Garrett put her at risk by making her wear one, while Garrett tries to push her into it by using her family as an argument– and I could have easily seen that escalating into a conflict between the two men but Thony just calmly uses logic again and tells Garrett about Kamdar always checking for wires. And ughhhhh that means that this is yet another moment where the writers could have given me the gift of the Robert-making-her-undress reveal but didn’t! Goddammit haha. Anyway to Garret’s credit, he does actually listen to her most of the time, which is why I can’t help but have a certain fondness for him haha. But ugh I’m forever obsessed with all the little glances between Thony and Arman in this scene, the silent conversation happening that Garrett is not a part of– this is some legit married behaviour lol
Okay I’m like unreasonably delighted by the fact that Thony brings Arman in through the front door this time? Like look it could have purely been due to filming factors (ie, having the whole thing shot in the kitchen/lounge area saves having to film them walking through the laundry first), but still. The symbolismmmmm. @enigmaticfox has already made this amazing post about it (seriously go read it) and like she said, there’s something so impactful about the way Thony opens the door wide and grants him access (get your mind out of the gutter Laura), and then when he hovers in the kitchen– looking to her for direction, not wanting to overstep his bounds– she instantly invites him further into her space, the place that is her home and her sanctuary. I love that she takes her shoes off– part habit, of course, but also a sign of feeling comfortable and secure– while he leaves his on. Which is also likely partly habit, since leaving shoes on in the house is common in the US, and also when a guest in another’s home in Mexico. But I also think he is half-expecting to be dismissed at any moment, and so taking off his shoes would feel kind of presumptuous, like it would be sending a message that he’s now here to stay regardless of what she wants. And ugh the way his eyes move around the space, taking it all in, and then focus over in the direction of Luca’s room– while he doesn’t look directly at her bed, I’m choosing to believe he clocked it and realised that that area is her ‘bedroom’, and so despite his intense curiosity about this aspect of her life that he hasn’t yet seen, he respectfully keeps his gaze away, letting her have her privacy. And then ugh I could even get all metaphorical about the way he sits on a single chair while she sits on a couch (aka, furniture which is designed to be shared by multiple people) and also with one of Luca’s toys right next to her– her family isn’t there, but they’re there, always beside her; meanwhile he's alone, visibly separate– except that with her body language, she bridges that gap between them. And don’t even get me started on the way she crosses her legs up under her, much like she does when around her family– like with her taking the shoes off, this is another sign of how safe she feels with him, basically the human equivalent of how a cat will only sleep with its paws tucked under its body when it's around people it trusts. You don’t sit like that if you feel there is any chance you need to escape the situation or protect yourself; it's purely the way our instincts are wired. But ugh anyway of course his first question is to ask her if she’s okay– he knows her, can see she’s struggling just from the look on her face, from the way her eyes are mostly fixed elsewhere rather than meeting his; and all he wants to do is try to ease that burden. I think that being in her space– what is so clearly a family home, but now completely devoid of that family– has really highlighted to him what helping him has cost her, what it could cost her if they don’t get this situation with Kamdar and the FBI resolved as soon as possible; he suddenly feels he’s done nothing but drag her into danger and pain and emotional turmoil, and you can hear in his voice that when he says “then you can get back to your family and forget about all this” he also means forget about me. And then when her response to that is to look him in the eye and tell him “We have to be done with this guy”, you can see how it affects him– there's something so soft and grateful in the way he looks at her ugh, knowing that even after everything she’s been through because of him, she still hasn’t abandoned him; that they’re still in this together.
So I’ve decided that Agent Chan is one of my favorite side characters lol. She was there during the hotel raid in 1x10 as well, right? Though ugh her not-super-subtly pointing the mic and talking into her earpiece is making me stressed lol. As is the fact that Armony literally cannot control what Kamdar will say– god how terrifying to walk into that situation, knowing that they’re being listened to by the literal FBI, and knowing that Kamdar is exactly the kind of man who loves both the sound of his own voice and gloating over other people's misfortunes? Honestly it’d be a miracle if they managed to pull this off without him saying something that tipped off the FBI about their involvement with Maya’s death. (Also sidenote, but something I love about this show is that we repeatedly see cleaning ladies? Like I mean this one that’s just walked past Armony may turn out to be plot-relevant, but we also see them when they have no bearing on the plot at all– like at Cortes’ place, and in La Habana, etc. I like to think that the show is reminding us that these women are always there, and they are not invisible). Anyways I swear that Joseph has never checked either of them at the door like this before, but sure I’ll just roll with it haha. And then oooooh damn who do we find in the office? Not Kamdar, but Nadia. I have questions about this, because firstly Arman said they’d ‘set up a meet with Kamdar’– so did they actually contact anyone to say they were coming? Or did they just rock up? Because if they’d contacted Joseph or whatever, then surely they should have known Kamdar was out of town. Unless Arman contacted Kamdar directly and the devious prick just thought it would be funny to have him be faced with Nadia instead when he got there? Which tbh would be consistent with his character, and would also answer my next question, which is when the hell Kamdar put Nadia in charge, considering that last night at the party she seemed very out of the loop. So ok headcanon time: Arman messaged Kamdar to make a time for the meet in the afternoon, and RK (I’m getting sick of typing Robert or Kamdar lol) decided to have a little fun, and immediately called Nadia and told her he wanted her to run things while he was away. It’s genius, really; he gets to score points with Nadia by showing her he trusts and values her, and he gets to set up Arman to most likely have another fight with Nadia while also not getting his cut for the deal. Win-win for RK lol.
Anyway I do like that Thony was the one to suggest aborting mission first; though lbr that was likely mostly because the whole point is to get RK, but at the same time I think she wants to leave Nadia out of things if she can. (another sidenote: I find it very satisfying that Garrett believes Thony and Arman had no idea about Nadia’s connection to RK lol– oh Garrett, you sure miss a lot, don’t you buddy). But ooooh then Nadia insists that she’s RK’s right hand, and so they can deal with her– and tbh I think that that pisses Thony off big time, because Nadia’s supposed to be Arman’s wife, and yet she chooses to ally herself with the man who is trying to destroy him?? I think that that is the moment when she decides that she can’t keep going out of her way to try to protect Nadia, especially since doing so potentially endangers herself, Arman, and her family. Both she and Nadia have chosen their sides, and so now it's just a matter of bahala na– whatever happens, happens. Of course Arman can’t see it like that, and simply has to protect Nadia; partly because she’s family, but also because he’s already betrayed her once by falling in love with Thony, and can’t face the idea of betraying her in this way too. And while Thony understands his need to protect her, I can see her being frustrated about it, especially given her temper– like is he really going to put protecting Nadia above potentially saving the rest of them???
Okay the fam all rocking up at JD’s and being welcomed so warmly is just so cute ugh. I just love them?? And then ugh J-Fi being all cute in the kitchen (while putting away the biggest slices of pizza the world has ever seen??) and Jazz watching them is just so funny– I know, girl, I ship it too. Although apparently JD’s gf is called Laura so maybe I should ship that instead, out of solidarity to a fellow bearer of the name lol. (Ngl, I would date this man in a heartbeat haha). But ugh this height difference kills me, and so does their comfort together ugh. He’s sweet and kind and he makes her laugh, and he loves her family like they’re his own (bc they are). So please pleaaaaase writers let them be together ughhhhh
Ooooh Garrett is Big Mad about Arman sabotaging the sting, and lbr Thony’s not delighted about it either. But ugh the way she looks at him every time he says ‘my wife’ and defends Nadia so vehemently? You can see how much it hurts her, each time a sharp reminder that he’s not hers– she used to have better armour to protect her from that reality, but the more time she’s spent with him, the thinner it’s gotten, and now every reminder pierces straight through. And yet even despite that, she still comes up with a way to get RK without endangering Nadia– but she doesn’t do it for Nadia’s sake. She does it for him, and then when she realises that there’s no way to make the plan work without him taking back his place in Nadia’s life– and all that that entails– she does what she has to do and lets him go, even though it means breaking her own heart. (I’m fine, I’m not crying, shut up). But god this scene was so fucking LOUD with things unsaid; for example, when Arman says he can’t get the keycard bc of being kicked out, the natural response from an outsider, ie Garrett, would be ‘well just kiss and make up then??’ because of course the expectation is that as the dumped party, he would be wanting to fix things and get back together. And then there’s the way Thony suggests it– the “well maybe you should reconcile” where she almost manages to hide the unwillingness with which she says it (it’s the tone and the maybe that gets me, bc someone who was emotionally unaffected in this situation just wouldn’t sound like that). And then to immediately follow that suggestion– that very reasonable suggestion of a man making up with his wife after a big fight, aka something that most people would presume he wants and is already actively trying to do– with the statement “It’s the only way we can protect our families”? Like honestly they’re both acting as if she’s sending him to the gallows rather than back to the life he was living literally less than a week ago, which is not at all a normal way to behave in this conversation– that is, unless you’re sacrificing the very thing you want most, and telling the man you love to go back to his wife even though it means the two of you can never be together. Because like I said in this ask, it would be a real dick move for Arman to go profess love and devotion to Nadia, and then drop her again the moment he got what he wanted from her– and so if he is going to go ahead with this reconciliation, he has to be all in; he has to commit to making his marriage work, because both he and Thony have too much honour to do otherwise. Which means that getting the keycard for Thony will basically be his parting gift to her, and they both know it; it’s in his quiet ‘alright’ and his grave expression, and it’s in the way she looks at him like the words I don’t want you to do this are screaming inside her head. Which, honestly, is a huge fucking deal in itself; even if she’s not admitting anything aloud, she’s still letting him see what she previously would have done her best to hide, and I can’t help but feel that that– the truth written all over her face, the silent admission that this was never just a one-sided thing– is her parting gift to him.
Meanwhile Garrett is just over here seeing all this intense eye contact and mutual angsting and is all like ‘Seriously guys? Right in front of my salad??” lolll. Like honestly, if he didn’t know they were in love with each other before, he sure as hell does now. Though unless he really is an absolutely terrible FBI agent, he’d no doubt have already had some fairly major suspicions based on… well, everything these two have done since they met lol. And I mean the way he looked right at Thony when Arman said Nadia had kicked him out of the house suggested he has a pretty clear idea of what’s up haha. But ugh okay headcanon time: Thony can’t face the idea of the long ride back home with her arms wrapped around Arman– possibly holding him for literally the last time– or the conversation that he might try to have when they get to the house (she’s holding things together right now, but there’s no knowing how long that will last, especially if she has to Talk about it), so she asks Garrett to give her a ride back, saying something about how they don’t have much time so Arman needs to go and start working on the keycard (read: on Nadia) right away. And Garrett looks between the two of them and then is all ‘right, sure, yeah’ and so she just turns and heads straight for the car, and Arman immediately takes a step as if to follow her and reach for her arm, but then he stops and clenches his jaw and turns back to the bike without a word, his movements jerky and rough as he shoves on the helmet and then roars out of there, leaving Garrett standing in a cloud of dust. And Garrett just sighs and shakes his head, then walks around to get into the car. Thony’s staring out the window and he can see the muscle working in her jaw, so he just starts the car without a word, and neither of them say a thing until they reach her house and she starts to get out. “Hey, Thony,” he says quietly, and when she half-glances in his direction, he adds, “I’m sorry.” Because even though he thinks she’s definitely better off being as far from Arman as possible, he knows a little about having a broken heart. She tells him that Kamdar needs to go down for everything he’s done to them, and Garrett promises her that he will. Then she nods and climbs from the car, and he watches as she disappears into the house alone.
But ugh anyway. I appreciate the symbolism of Arman ringing the doorbell rather than letting himself into the house; it’s not his space anymore, and he doesn’t have a right to be in there without her permission. (And maybe he knows she’ll be more receptive to him if he’s seen as being especially respectful of her boundaries, who knows). Ngl the ‘what the fuck bro’ look she gives him when she sees him standing there is actually kinda funny though. But ok I really want to know how long has passed since they saw each other in the office– probably no more than a few hours, right? Bc I assume Garrett wanted to meet with Thony and Arman pretty much right away after the sting went bust, and I assume Arman went right to the house when he left the meet, so it can’t have been super long? Though tbh I would love if Arman didn’t go straight to the house, and (headcanon time lol) instead took a different road back to the city and ended up stopping by some ravine somewhere, tossing his helmet away from him with a roar of frustration before violently hurling rock after rock over the edge, until he finally slumps back onto the bike, both physically and emotionally exhausted. And then he still doesn’t go to Nadia, but instead rides straight to Thony’s place, sitting there behind the back fence for who knows how long before finally letting out a curse and taking off for ‘home’. But ugh anyway my point (before the headcanoning lol) was that I respect how quickly Nadia went from that sleek sparkly blue number in the office, to her (very cute) around-the-house wear lol. I guess she was upset by the altercation in the office and headed home soon after? Also I love that despite literally being on a mission to woo Nadia back, the first thing he does is order her to stay away from Robert. Like bro are you trying to suck at this? But then ugh when she tells him to leave her alone and go back to taking care of ‘Thony and her kid’– and I wonder if she wishes now that they’d had a child together, so he would have had more reason to stay, since it clearly seems that she alone isn’t enough? Loved that she repeated the ‘there is no us’ and says that he made his choice– but tbh, part of the whole problem is that he hasn’t made his choice? He’s been actively avoiding it this whole time, because while he knows he’s in love with Thony and wants to be with her and would do anything for her, he still loves Nadia as his family, and doesn’t want to just completely abandon her. Especially considering the fact that if she came over from Argentina with RK all those years ago, she likely has no family in Vegas; Thony at least has her little family unit around her, but Nadia has no-one but him. Well, him and RK– and as he says, she’s not safe with RK. Loved getting that bit of backstory that she’d left RK because of being afraid of him (honestly though I am SO curious how one gets away from a man like that and stays in the same city without him trying to drag her back in; unless getting married to a guy who had the protection of a major crime family had something to do with that….?).
Anyway I'm also loving that this scene is proving some of my theories right about Nadia thinking she can control Robert, and also wanting to be around him because he values her. And then she tells Arman to go, and he pauses, clearly trying to find the right thing to say, and settles on the truth, that he’s worried about her. But she’s not interested in hearing it, because she knows that that’s not the issue here. And ugh the shininess to her eyes as she asks him if he loves Thony just hurts me. I hate seeing the pain she’s experiencing because of the two of them and the connection they share– one that they ever intended on, but never stood a chance against, but still. It sucks. I love that even as he made himself lie and say no, it comes out as barely more than a whisper, rather than a firm denial; and then he can’t just leave it there, because on one hand, the lie feels too much of a betrayal of Thony, and on the other, he can see that Nadia doesn’t believe him anyway. But he can’t tell the truth either, because if he were to let that yes out there, she would never take him back; she has too much pride to knowingly be with someone who's in love with someone else. So he settles for the middle ground, because he knows that framing his feelings for Thony as unclear and uncertain and confusing is something Nadia could accept, especially when he says with all honesty that he loves her. Because he does! She’s his family, has been practically the only family he’s had for years, and he wants them both to always be in each other’s lives. But he hasn’t been happy as her husband for quite some time, and Thony’s appearance in his life just made him able to understand why.
But anyway hooooo boy I do have to say that was some impressive kissing haha– ngl on my first watch I practically had to watch this scene through my fingers, but I’ve built up a bit of a tolerance now lol. And ok I don’t know how much of it was deliberate manipulation, but I did like the way he was very respectful with her, going slow and not pushing, letting her decide if she would let him kiss her or not. And damn when a man can kiss like that, who could blame her for letting him???
Gotta say I don’t think I have ever seen a show have scene transitions so goddamn rude as going from Arman seducing Nadia on a goddamn countertop, to Thony sitting motionless and alone in her dark and empty house for hours, to Thony’s entire family laughing and having fun together in the warm light of JD’s place without her??? Like jesus christ writers, why must you hurt me in this way????? (Though ngl the camping in the living room thing was fucking adorable). But ugh Thony calls Fi, reaching out to her family while sitting on Luca’s bed because it’s the closest she can get to being with him, and it’s also a reminder that she’s doing this for him, to keep him safe. And ugh the somberness in her voice is such a contrast to the loud and laughing voices of the family, and even though she tells Fi she made the right call (about sending her family away, about sending Arman away) it seems more like she’s trying to convince herself than Fi. And then she sees Luca, and it makes her really genuinely smile for a moment– and then all too soon he’s gone to play with his sibling-cousins and the call ends and she’s hit again with how completely alone she is. (Like literally when was the last time she spent an entire night alone?? Definitely not since Luca was born, and ughhh that knowledge hurts me).
And then the next thing we see is her curled up on top of Luca’s bed, looking so incredibly small, and tbh I think the writers were having a competition to see how many times they can make me almost cry over Thony in this ep because god dammit this hurts?? Having her so alone and terrified is just awful– and then when she’s startled awake by the sound of someone outside and runs to grab any weapon she can, knowing how little chance she has of protecting herself?? Fuck. She’s so caught up in the panic that even after she hears Arman’s voice, she forgets she’s holding the knife for a moment and has to put it down in the laundry, but then she doubts herself again– she’s been wanting to hear his voice, wanting for him to show up and stay with her like he’d said he would before everything went to hell– so she has to peek out through the blinds to be sure it really is him there. And then she lets him in, heart still racing but her terror replaced by relief– not only that there wasn’t some intruder breaking in to get her, but also that Arman was there, and she wasn’t alone. I really wish we knew what time it was during this scene– ie, like midnight vs just barely pre-dawn, because that would change her perspective of why he’s here. I’m going to assume it’s just late at night, and so she’s looking at him secretly hoping that he’s come to tell her that he failed with Nadia, that there would be no reconciliation and that they would find another way to get access to the office. And hoping that maybe then he would ask if it was still okay for him to stay, to watch over her so she wouldn’t be alone… but instead he says that he’s just stopping by, and then hands her the keycard– and she just stares at it for a second, because let’s be real, it’s like he just handed her a certificate that has ‘JUST RENEWED MY WEDDING VOWS! ALSO MOST DEFINITELY JUST CAME HERE FRESH FROM HAVING EXCELLENT SEX WITH MY SUPER HOT WIFE’ emblazoned across it in fucking giant neon print. And god the way she takes in a breath and opens her mouth like she’s trying so hard to find something neutral to say– even something simple like ‘okay thanks, I’ll call Garrett’– but then she makes the mistake of looking up at him and the words just die in her throat because she can’t do it, she can’t pretend like this is fine, like it doesn’t hurt to have him standing right there in front of her but now even further out of her reach than he’s ever been. The fact she doesn’t hide that pain from him is huge– yet another wordless admission that she previously never would have allowed herself– and he sees it, and it hurts him too, knowing that he can’t fix it. He’d probably been lying there staring at the ceiling while Nadia slept, trying to figure out what the hell he was going to say to Thony, because how do you tell someone that you love them and wish you could be with them, while actively taking steps to be with someone else? No wonder she cuts him off– I don’t think she could have handled it if he’d tried to tell her what he felt for her right then. So she brushes it all aside with an “It’s fine”– even though they both know it is absolutely not fine, but he respects her decision anyway and doesn’t try to continue the conversation, knowing that he doesn't have a right to try to close the distance between them that he himself has just created.
Ngl when I watched the ep for the first time, I viewed both this moment and the ‘maybe you should reconcile’ scene as him thinking her response meant she didn’t feel the same way about him, and being all angsty like ‘how could she just send me back to Nadia like she doesn’t even care?? Waaaaahhh she doesn’t love me back’ lol, because the idea of him wallowing in completely oblivious misery while she was wallowing in fully-aware misery was pretty damn delicious haha, but then the moment I watched those scenes again I was like ah no he for sure knows exactly what this is doing to them both, and tbh that’s actually even more delicious lol. Because that means that mixed in with all the turmoil and angst and pain, there’s a glowing thread of ‘oh my god she loves me back’ (or at the very least, ‘omg she wants to be with me too’ in case he doesn’t dare hope that she’s like truly ~in love~ with him) but that in turn makes the turmoil worse because it shows exactly what he’s giving up. And I’m honestly so proud that she let him see the truth, let herself be vulnerable and open instead of hiding what she really feels away behind layers of hastily-rebuilt walls. Bc they’ve been doing this dance for so long already where they’ve been practically shouting their feelings for one another through their actions, even as they don’t dare to breathe a word of it aloud; but now they’ve finally at least acknowledged that they’re there, even if they haven’t put a name to them. Which would be really fucking amazing if it wasn’t happening in a situation where they both think that any chance of being together is now gone hahaha. But ugh anyway she manages to bring things back to business by mentioning Garrett (a sure way to kill any romantic moment lol) and then sighhhh she opens the door and shows him out, which is some more downright rude symbolism from the writers tbh. Also this reminds me, I answered an ask about this scene here, which also has my interpretation of his “I don’t know how much time I can buy you”. (Ngl I am immature so I giggle at the implication that he cannot satisfy a woman for very long lol, but also c’mon we already know that’s totally not the case for him haha). But tbh I do love that line, because while he’s mostly trying to protect her by encouraging her to get in and out of the office as quick as she can, there’s also a hint of a plea there; like he’s saying that this reconciliation is by no means guaranteed to last, and is begging her not to give up on the two of them just yet. Which makes her tiny nod mean even more; lbr, he’s going to be clinging to that faint spark of hope in the days ahead. But ugh the way she glances out at him through the blinds one last time while locking the door behind him, and then looks down at the keycard she’s still holding, her jaw clenching? She’d gotten what she needed, but the question is– was it worth it??
Okay seriously, seeing Nadia wake up looking so happy and satisfied really sucks haha. (I mean, this is a great sign for how much Thony is going to enjoy her future life with Arman lol, but damn I really did not need the reminder of all the sexing that occurred– so thanks for that writers, you absolute sadists lol). Seeing her react to the empty bed beside her was hard too, and then the way she smiles at him when he appears with coffees?? Like dammit he’s already broken her heart once and now it’s almost definitely guaranteed to happen again– and even worse this time, because I’m convinced she is going to find out that this make-up was a ruse to allow him to steal her keycard, probably when he inevitably confronts her about the marriage certificate and she realises that the only way he could have seen it is by accessing the office. Not only will the realisation that he used her like that– and even worse, used her in order to help Thony– absolutely shatter her heart, but it will be such a huge blow to her pride that I wouldn’t be surprised if she legit tried to murder him lol. And tbh I wouldn’t be able to say that it’s not warranted, because holy shit this really was a betrayal of epic proportions (no matter how good his intentions were or the fact that he was trying to protect her, it was still unforgivable), and like I said in one of those previous Asks, their relationship will never, ever, ever recover from it. Which tbh is why I couldn’t hate all the Arman/Nadia in this ep, because the way it happened (Arman fighting to get her back, not for her, but for Thony) was literally like watching the titanic get put on a collision course with the iceberg; there’s nothing but absolute catastrophe lying ahead. Plus that’s not even to mention the fact that he was able to convince Nadia to take him back so easily, which clearly shows that the only reason they hadn’t reconciled earlier was because he actually hadn’t even been trying at all. Regardless of what he’d been telling her, he didn’t actually want to get back together with Nadia– especially not when her leaving him had freed him from the obligation that had kept him bound, that had kept him apart from Thony– but it wasn’t until the moment that Thony asked him to reconcile with her that he'd realised it. And then it didn't matter, because like he said in 2x04, he always does whatever it takes to keep Thony safe– even breaking his own heart.
Phew honestly it’s a relief to have an FBI scene, bc this ep is just too goddamn heavy lol. I’m happy to see Agent Chan again, and I hope she was the one who actually messed with his car haha. And then ta-da, looks like the cleaning lady we saw earlier did turn out to be plot-relevant after all, as Thony has put on her trusty cleaning-lady-disguise and taken her place. But ugh I can’t help but think about the fact that she’s in here alone, literally risking her life to get them all free of RK, while Arman is busy canoodling in the comfort of his king size bed. Though lbr, I don’t think anyone hates that fact more than Arman– how awful it must feel, to be deliberately deceiving one woman you love in an incredibly hurtful way, all the while knowing that the woman you love even more deeply is in danger and yet you’re here betraying her (no one will ever convince me that he doesn’t feel like he’s cheating on Thony right now) instead of there protecting her. Aaaand oops I managed to make the FBI scene about Armony lol. Also I get what Russo means with her comment, but I still take offense at her calling Thony ‘your girl’ lol. She is only one man’s girl (and as the song goes, he needs her, lol) and that man sure as hell ain’t Garrett. But ugh of course RK has a fucking advent calendar instead of a safe; thank god Thony gets lucky and finds the ledger after only a few goes, rather than having to search the whole fucking thing lol. But the ledger is not the only thing that she finds– and whatever that piece of paper is, it’s clearly hugely important, because she risks going back to get a photo of it even though she can see Joseph already headed her way. But ugh I do appreciate that Garrett was ready to rush in and save her, but looks like he has learned his lesson about busting in after what happened with Cortes. But also omg the stress of Joseph walking right past her in the hall?? Good thing the old cleaning-lady-invisibility appears to still be effective. Though ngl I was imagining a scenario where he and the other cleaning lady are a ~thing, so when he sees her there he goes over to flirt a bit, and then he realises it’s Thony and they stare at each other like wtf lol. But of course that would not have gone well for the mission, so I guess I will just have to give up on my Joseph x Faceless Cleaning Lady ship dreams for now haha.
So Thony’s sitting in the kitchen looking at the photos on her phone (or lbr, one in particular, aka the mystery paper) and there’s the knock at the door, and she freezes for a moment, waiting– and then as soon as she hears Garrett’s voice she goes to let him in. And tbh I wonder if her waiting to hear who was at the door wasn’t just about making sure it wasn’t a potential threat, but also maybe she was wondering if it was Arman again, and so she hesitates because she’s not sure she can face him right now? Especially because they’ve now achieved what needed to be achieved, so technically he could call off the reconciliation with Nadia (though as I’ve said before, they both know he actually can’t/won’t, not without it making him an utter bastard). But maybe I’m just making stuff up here lol. Anyway I find it kinda interesting how she and Garrett are a little matchy matchy in their blue tops, like she and Arman had matched in their black jackets. Maybe the costume department showing her connection to both of them? But again, probably just me making stuff up. And then lol of course he casually does the social faux pas of scrolling through someone’s photos without permission, and she gets the phone back real quick, clearly to stop him seeing the pic of the mystery paper. But okay so he tells her they can get RK on criminal profiteering, and I’m confused again about the way he’s changed his tune?? Earlier in the ep he was super against the profiteering charge and was determined for him to go down for murder. What changed?? Or is Garrett planning to use the information gained from the ledger to trap RK in some other way? I need answers lol. But ugh it genuinely sucks when he is all compassionate towards her now because it just makes her feel so much more guilty about Maya… which is why she tries to make it clear to him how grateful she is for everything he’s done for her and her family, and how he’s not to blame for what happened with Maya. I guess she’s hoping that he will remember this conversation after he finds out the truth about Maya, and will know that she did genuinely care for him and that she wasn’t just using him the whole time. (Sidenote, she thanks him for everything he did for her family ‘last night’ but it was actually the night before that. Keep up, writers! lol). Also I can’t remember what ep it’s from, but I swear Garrett has said ‘good work today’ to her before and I’ve decided it’s his little catchphrase lol
Ughghhhhhh have i mentioned lately how much I love the De La Rosa family?? The pureness of the sibling bond between all three kids, and the way that all of them (Fi included) are able to have fun and be silly together? Like ngl this video game scene was an incredibly accurate family depiction haha. Also I love the melodic little sound Fi makes as she walks into the room, like a happy little wordless greeting? God she’s so cute, I want to be besties with her lol. Anyway honestly being here on this little ‘holiday’ with JD has been good for all of them ugh. But oooh the conversation between Fi and JD about Thony is interesting– she tells him it’s unfair for him to say he doesn’t want Jazz anywhere near Thony until the FBI stuff is over, but honestly is it unfair? He’s her father and he doesn’t want her in danger, and I mean before now it wasn’t like there was a way to remove Jazz from that situation, but now he’s back and has a safe place for her to stay, and she’s far better off with him than at the home where Thony’s enemies could find her. And his point about Thony putting them all in danger is kinda fair too tbh. Of course I’m a Thony supporter all the way, though, so I want to say ‘It’s not her fault! She didn’t have a choice!’.... except that that’s not entirely true. With regard to season 1, it was; she was doing whatever she had to do to save Luca, and if that came with a small risk to the family as a whole, she had no option but to accept that and take steps to minimise it as best she could. But now– with all the stuff with Kamdar– it’s different, because it’s not Luca or the family that she’s trying to save, it’s Arman, and she did have a choice. Bc honestly, after 2x04 (when Mr Motel Mustache is dealt with), she could have basically walked away from it all– she didn’t need to continue getting meds with Arman and selling them to help his and Nadia’s debt. And when the fight in 2x05 happened and Arman said they were done, she could have decided that they really were over and that she needed to remove herself from his world, and from him, and he wouldn’t have tried to force her back in; even with RK telling him to get Thony to come clean the office, if she’d outright said no and told him she wanted nothing more to do with him, he would have called one of La Habana’s cleaners and then just gone and borne the consequences of RK’s displeasure himself. But the truth is she was never going to do that. She was never going to walk away from him, not when he needed her– even though she knew it meant putting herself directly in the sights of a man as dangerous as Robert, she did it anyway. But the real question is, if she’d known then everything that would happen as a result of helping Arman, would she still have made the same choice? (Honestly, my gut says yes). And okay anyway I love that Fi defends her and says that Thony’s the only one who’s always been there for her, but I mean really? How? They’ve been living in separate countries for 15 years, and who knows if Thony has ever even been able to visit before– not to mention that in the past 5 years she’s been completely occupied with just keeping Luca alive and also not going bankrupt from Marco’s assholery. Like I appreciate Fi’s loyalty but I have some questions lol. But oooh yessss at JD’s insistence that they all stay with him until it is all over, I fully support this! Bc as much as Thony being all alone hurts my soul, I love the J-Fi and kids family dynamic– and I mean, Thony’s house being empty means that Arman can come over and that they can…. talk….. without being interrupted lol. Just saying, those two have some reconciling of their own to do :P
Speaking of the reconciling, god the way Nadia looks like she’s walking on air as she heads into the club is absolutely killing me (though again, what an excellent sign for future-Thony’s happiness haha) bc ugh it’s not fair that the source of her happiness is built on a lie, and that the whole thing is going to come crashing down around her very soon and leave her even more brokenhearted than before– bc let’s be totally honest here, this reconciliation was doomed from the start; we can’t control who we love, and despite Arman’s best efforts and intentions, at this point it would be easier for him to stop breathing than it would for him to stop being in love with Thony. Plus like I said before, there’s no way the man is going to be able to just ignore the marriage certificate– the evidence that she’s been lying to him since they met, and also the thing that could potentially mean their own marriage is void– and so when he inevitably confronts her about it, she’s going to realise that he got into the office somehow, and put two and two together. And ugghhhh even despite my love of Armony, that moment is going to be so hard to watch, because while Nadia has her flaws, she doesn’t deserve this. And ugh we see just a tiny glimpse of that hurt when she realises the keycard is gone and is faced with the horrible possibility that Arman took it– but of course Thony protected him and left it somewhere where it would be found quickly, but would also still be believable that Nadia would leave it. Which is just even further manipulation of Nadia and ugh it feels gross to watch (though at least we know that both Thony and Arman feel terrible about it, and are only doing it because they have no other choice). But ugh anyway on a happier sidenote, it’s cute that Nadia waved to the bouncer on her way in; I bet she’s made friends with all of them and they think she’s the best, and I could totally see her with a whole little army of loyal bouncers lol. (So look out, Arman! haha)
Okay so I might be getting a little conspiracy-theorist here, but I’m going to say it anyway: what if Russo is dirty??? Like what if Russo actually was the mole, and has been indebted to RK this whole time??? I mean I know Garrett found the tracker in Maya’s things, and so he now believes that that’s how RK knew where to find her– but who brought him those things? Russo. Russo, who knows him very well, and so would have known that he would have taken absolutely every precaution to hide Maya, meaning that Maya’s abduction and murder would have had him convinced that there must be a mole in their department. And so she preempts that by planting the tracker in Maya’s things and letting him discover it himself, completely erasing his suspicions and leaving her in the clear. Which makes me also wonder if her big promotion is either a) because Kamdar pulled some strings for her to get her the job she wanted, or b) was her looking for reassignment so she can get away from RK without him threatening to expose her. And so what if the whole reason she is pushing for him to be brought down for profiteering rather than murder is because that’s run by a different department, and so RK won’t know that she was involved? Bc I can imagine that if her department tried to take him down, he’d be like ‘well you better make this go away or I’m telling everyone about our arrangement and taking you down with me’. And so while she can’t risk being the one to take him down, she desperately wants to be free of him, which is why she’s pushing for the profiteering angle. But anyway I know I may be way off base with all this, but idk this theory just has a grip on me now lol. Like I don’t think Russo is bad, I think RK just has her in a tough spot, like he has Arman and Thony and so many others. Plus, the way Russo says “Now you know you’re not to blame” after Garrett finds the tracker makes me believe that she didn’t just plant it to cover her own ass– she also did it so he would be able to forgive himself, because she genuinely does care about him and hates that he’s hurting. But ah well, I guess we’ll see in the coming eps whether I’m onto something here or not lol
Damn, the fact that Thony is waiting for Arman outside despite the lingering threat of RK sending someone to hurt her?? I guess she really doesn’t want him in her space rn / is really trying to keep her distance now that the situation between them has changed. (again, the fantastic post by @enigmaticfox really highlighted this). But ugh I need to know what she said to him to get him to come over– like I assume she texted rather than calling (hearing his voice and knowing that Nadia was likely only in the next room would have just been too hard to bear), and she was probably careful with her words in the text because she knew that there was the possibility Nadia would see his phone. So did she use some kind of code or something, because a ‘we need to talk’ would definitely not go down well if Nadia were to see it lol. So maybe she made up something about there being an issue with the meds that they needed to sort out, knowing he would understand what she was trying to say– and then after sending it she immediately gets a text back saying ‘on my way’ like he’d been keeping his phone close and just waiting to hear from her. But ugh I feel for the position she’s in– caught between the need to protect her family, and the irresistible urge to protect Arman (even from himself). And even as she asks if he knew about the marriage, she already knows the answer; simply because if he’d known, he would have told her already. They don’t keep things from each other, not anymore, which is why she risked going back to the certificate to get a photo– she wanted to be able to show him the definitive proof, so he wouldn’t be forced to choose between her word and Nadia’s. (Sidenote: from the certificate itself, we can see that Nadia’s surname was De Leon, which is freakin badass; and also that she and Robert got married 8 years ago, which means the maximum amount of time that she and Arman have been together is probably about 7 years, but may well be less). But anyway ughhh the way Thony makes it clear to him that she genuinely wanted to help him protect Nadia, but that if the only way to take down RK is for Nadia to go down too, then she’s going to have to take it, because she has to put the safety of her family first. And then they just stare at each other, because they both know what this means; if he chooses to put his family (aka Nadia) first– and protect her even if doing so means RK walks free– then he and Thony will have no choice to be on opposing sides in this fight.
And that’s the last place either of them wants to be.
#The Cleaning Lady#Armony#TCL recaps#how many fucking hours did I spend on this omg#thank god for the hiatus#(let's not think about how absolutely screwed I'm going to be next week lol)#but still please feel free to come talk to me about this show haha

could you write ian and mickey furniture shopping and mickey just getting everything he wants? i feel like ian isn't really someone who cares all that much about what stuff they get as long as it's affordable and comes with some plants and i'd hope he just lets mickey do his thing and enjoys his happy husband. it's about time they get what they want <3
Relevant to your interests: bed shopping

"This one is nice," Ian said, stroking a hand along the back of a velvety sofa. He circled it and plopped down unceremoniously, the cushions dipping gently under his weight.
"Soft, too," he added, wriggling his ass on it for effect.
"No," Mickey vetoed immediately, and Ian pouted.
"Why, what's wrong with this one?" he asked. "The last one was too traditional, the one before that too firm--"
"No point in a couch if it ain't more comfortable than the floor--"
"--and you have to pick one at some point!" Ian finished, rolling his head back against the cushions in exasperation.
"Gallagher," Mickey said. "It's red."
Ian's brow crinkled. He reached up to toy with the hair above his ear, frowning.
"What's wrong with red?" he asked. "You like red."
Mickey rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, I like red on you, you dork," he confirmed, slapping Ian's hand away so he could tug playfully on that same patch of hair.
"That's why we can't have a red couch," he continued. "Do you even know how bad you clash right now?"
Ian looked up at him innocently, and Mickey sighed.
"Of course you don't," he muttered, letting go of Ian's hair to turn and collapse onto the furniture beside him. "No goddamn taste, I swear."
He leaned forward, ran a hand over his face. They'd been at this for over an hour now, and all they had to show for it were some cheap end tables and a couple of bar stools for the kitchen island. And even that had been a struggle, Ian flitting from monstrosity to garish monstrosity until Mickey finally managed to talk him into classic materials and clean lines.
There would be no animal print cushions or rainbow-colored acrylic in his apartment, fuck you very much.
Fighting over furniture with Ian was exhausting--he had said they wouldn't have the same taste, and he was right--but at least Ian didn't seem to mind. He stroked a hand up Mickey's back to rest at the base of his neck, shook him slightly until he let the hand fall from his face.
"Come on, Mick," Ian encouraged. "There's gotta be something here somewhere."
"We've been across the whole fucking floor already" Mickey pointed out, raising his head. "If there were something here, we would have found it by--"
His eyes caught on a sofa a few rows over.
"--now," he finished faintly, and stood.
"We look at this one yet?" he called back to Ian as he walked over to it. The black leather was smooth to his touch, butter soft and faintly warm. His fingers skipped over the simple nailhead details on the arm, the metal cool. It reminded him of an old motorcycle jacket Mandy used to wear, the one that had belonged to their mom.
"Uh, no," Ian answered, coming up behind him. "This whole row was off limits remember? They're like, hundreds over our budget."
Oh. Right.
Mickey let his hand fall, clenched it at his side, and released it with a breath.
"Right," he said lowly. "Never mind, let's look over by the coffee tables again."
He went to turn, but Ian grabbed his hand.
"Hey, wait," Ian said, biting his lip. "You really like this one?"
Mickey looked at it again. He saw the punk-rock metal studs, the clean black leather. Imagined it in their living room, Ian stretched out on one side, pale skin and red hair against the tall back. Thought of sitting on it with him, eating dinner, watching tv, talking. Just being them, on their couch, in their apartment.
"Yeah," Mickey said. "Yeah, I do." Then he shook his head, and pulled his hand away from Ian's.
"Doesn't matter," he said. "Can't afford it, man, come on."
Ian doesn't.
"What if we could?" Ian pressed. "Would you want it?"
Mickey just looked at him. "Yes."
Ian nodded.
"Then we're getting it," he said decisively.
"No, we're not," Mickey countered. "Ian, do you even like it?"
Ian hesitated.
"We're not spending a fortune we don't have on something you don't even like, Ian," Mickey said. "The whole point is to get stuff for the two of us, and every fuckin' time you see it you'll get annoyed about it."
Ian shook his head, and took a step closer.
"I won't," he said. "I promise." He took Mickey's hand again, didn't let him pull away.
"When I see it, I'll think about you," he continued. "About how your eyes lit up when you saw it. And we can swing it, we can," he added. "It might be a little tight for a few weeks, but..."
He stepped closer, the toes of their shoes bumping together.
"We get to have nice things now, Mickey," he said. "And I know you said you don't want nice things, but hey." He shrugged. "This could be yours."
Mickey looked at him. Looked at their hands. Looked at the sofa.
"Alright," he agreed. "Then I want it."
Ian's grin was blinding.
"Then we're getting it," he said happily. He took a step back, falling backward onto the cushions of the black sofa and bringing Mickey with him, catching him as he landed awkwardly across his lap.
"And to make it up to me about that red one," Ian added, "I'm getting that planter from earlier."
Mickey grimaced.
"Not the fuckin' ass one," he complained. "Don't want that thing on my table, man."
"You didn't have a problem with asses on the table last night," Ian said with a smirk, and Mickey groaned.
Then he let his head fall back onto the cushions next to Ian's, and gave in.
If he got to buy this couch, Ian could have all the weird fuckin' planters he wanted. He could fill their entire house with succulents and shit, and Mickey would watch him freak out over them from his soft, leather throne.
#daily speedwrite#gallavich#ian gallagher#mickey milkovich#furniture shopping#i googled weird planters and one of the first results was one that looked like a butt#so obviously Ian has to own that now

Fucking Perfect
A/N: Hey, y’all!!! Here’s another fic that was actually a request from @jasontoddslut. I hope you all enjoy!
WARNINGS: Language, violence, and smut!
It wasn’t that late. With a DVD and a large free pepperoni pizza in hand (the pizza was actually a “thank you” from a local pizza owner after Jason saved his life), Jason couldn’t help but keep smiling underneath his red helmet as he drove to his and Danielle’s home. They were supposed to have a night in; no distractions, no interruptions, and no patrolling, for him at least.
But Bruce had called him for help last minute around 9:00 because Joker decided to break out of Arkham Asylum with every other inmate, from Harley Quinn to Scarecrow. To say the mission was bizarre as hell wouldn’t be exaggerating. Jason and Dick laughed their asses off the entire night because it was like a high school reunion for all of Gotham’s villains. Even Bruce couldn’t help but grin a little when he saw the Riddler and Penguin link arms and skip down the street behind Bane, Two Face, Mr. Freeze, and Killer Croc.
It was one hilarious but memorable sight.
But now all Jason could think about was getting back home to Danielle as he speeds down the streets on his bike from Arkham while holding the box of pizza and DVD. Just thinking about a hot shower, cuddling with Danielle on the couch under a fluffy blanket, and just falling asleep in the comfort of their home makes him consider giving up the vigilante life sometimes.
He wondered what his life would be like not being everyone’s hero.
No more subtle or dangerous injuries. Staying in bed the entire night. Having the ability to go here and there and do everything normal like others. Maybe even settling down somewhere in the countryside, where he can finally retain his own property, perhaps build himself his own auto salvage business where he’ll specialize in fixing and rebuilding expensive, fast cars and bikes.
Having something to call his own has always been a secret dream of his. Only Y/N knows all that.
Jason could just see it now: waking up early to see the beautiful sunrise from the safety on the ground, arm wrapped protectively around his wife, who would be pregnant with their child...
He initially tenses up at that particular thought. Jason has never even spoken about his desire to have kids. Hell, he has always boasted about hating kids; often complaining about them being bratty, loud, and just being unbearable little shits.
Jason even pretends to despise Dick and Barbara’s five-year-old son, Tommy, just because he enjoys pissing them off. But in all honesty, Jason loves his nephew and knows damn well that if anything were to happen to Tommy...Jason would fucking kill them in a heartbeat.
Fuck, even Barbara gets on Jason’s ass about when he’s finally going to settle down and have kids of his own. She and Dick make the normal, perfect life look easy. They were brave and strong enough to walk away from the vigilante life, only promising Bruce that they’ll help him every now and then and only for big emergencies.
Jason couldn’t believe it at first. Dick and Barbara just happily moved to a safe, typical suburban but luxurious home far away from Gotham. They made it look so effortless and picture-perfect.
With Dick and Barbara gone, all Jason has is Tim and Damian around. Which isn’t much considering they have their own lives.
And Jason used to have Y/N, his best friend.
Before Jason’s thoughts could consume him more, he pulls up to the private parking garage at his penthouse. After he parks his bike, he climbs off and removes his red helmet; quickly inhaling air after sweating so much. Holding the helmet underneath his left arm, he carries the pizza and DVD and heads to the elevator.
He sighs heavily; his back hurts like fuck after being thrown around a lot from Killer Croc. He wonders if it would be completely sexist or just entirely fucked up if he asks Danielle for a backrub.
We’ve been together for two years. She knows my line of work, and if she really loves me, she’ll give me an all-body massage...and besides...this is the first time I’m asking for one anyways, he thinks to himself.
The elevator dings and opens for him; revealing the private floor that is his, courtesy of Bruce. If it weren’t for Bruce, Jason wouldn’t have the luxury of such a private and quiet place to call home. Bruce owns the entire building, mostly business associates and employees live and stay here anyways.
Jason walks to the door and opens it; is actually quite stunned that it’s unlocked. Mostly because he’s OCD about that, even if this floor and this entire building is private, Jason still likes to take precaution.
The guy fucking grew up on the streets and has seen and done bad things. Really bad. But he’s not like that anymore. Oh, no he’s not. Now, Jason lives by his new principles, but that doesn’t mean he’s not a badass anymore or is violent by nature. He is still Jason Todd.
Stepping inside his penthouse, Jason kicks the front door shut with his heavy boot and sets the pizza and DVD on the entryway table. He puts his helmet back on and quickly pulls a gun from his thigh holster. Jason takes this seriously, just as with any mission or recon.
He quietly goes down the hallway, immediately notices their bedroom door is cracked open and a light is on. He raises his gun and says...
Fuck it. I’m going in with my gun. Hope this all ends well with no blood.
Jason kicks open the bedroom door and has the most fucked up, perfect view of his girlfriend, Danielle, in bed with another man; a man who is on top of her, fucking her underneath the covers, IN THEIR BED!!!!!
Danielle gasps in surprise. “Jason! What-what are you doing home so early?!” she panics. She sits up and pushes the man off of her. Her tits are on display, after the blanket falls from her chest.
The male brunette is shocked at seeing Jason. The naked man uses the sheet to hide his lower body. Jason thinks this guy is a fucking tool. He’s shaking badly, and he’s sputtering like an idiot.
“Oh, oh God! This is Jason? You’re with fucking Red Hood? Oh, my God...OH, MY GOD! This guy is gonna kill me, Dani! He-he has a fucking gun in his hand! I’m gonna fucking die!” the man cries out.
“SHUT YOUR GODDAMN FUCKING MOUTH, YOU PIECE OF SHIT!” Jason yells from underneath his helmet. The voice changer that’s built into his helmet makes him sound more dark...even demonic. But Jason could care less about anything and everything right now. All he can think about is beating the shit out of this guy. “WHO THE FUCK IS THIS?!”
Danielle runs a hand through her messy long red hair, and sniffles. She’s actually...crying?
“This is Paul-”
“Don’t fucking tell him my name! Jesus Christ! Are you trying to get me killed?!”
Jason aims his gun and shoots near Paul’s head. The loud, piercing sound fills the room. The bullet hits the wall, but nonetheless scares the shit out of Paul.
Paul covers his eyes and cries. “Of fuck...please don’t kill me. Oh God, please don’t...”
Jason removes his helmet in anger and throws it down. His green eyes are already red-rimmed. He won’t admit he’s crying...God no...his allergies must be acting up.
“So, what the fuck, Dani? You’re seriously sleeping with someone else?” Jason asks, rhetorically of course. “In our house...underneath our covers...in our bed?!”
“Jason, please. I-I didn’t want you to find out this way,” Dani says.
“But you wanted me to find out?” Jason snaps, suddenly moves closer to the bed. Paul moves backwards away from him. “You wanted me to find out, but just not this way? JESUS CHRIST, DANI! What the fuck were you thinking?! Why the hell would you do this to me, after everything we’ve fucking been through!”
“Because you weren’t here! You weren’t here tonight!” Dani yells.
“What the hell does that mean? You decided to cheat on me because I WASN’T HERE TONIGHT?!”
Paul slowly stands up with the sheet. “Maybe I should leave...” he mumbles.
“How about I show you the way out, BUDDY?!” Jason spits out. He grabs Paul’s throat and drags him across the bedroom.
“DON’T HURT HIM! PLEASE DON’T HURT HIM, JASON!” Dani cries out.
Jason was seeing red. He couldn’t see or think straight at all. With a huff, Jason slams Paul down to the floor and drops down to beat the fucking shit out of Paul. His fist keeps coming down hard and fast, and he definitely ignores Paul crying, pleading for him to stop. Jason even ignores the sight of a lot of blood and bones cracking underneath his punches.
“STOP IT! JASON, STOP HURTING HIM, PLEASE!” Dani screams in horror, pulling Jason back by grabbing his leather jacket.
When Jason finally stops, he realizes Paul’s face is almost disfigured because of the blood and swelling, but he doesn’t care. At all.
Jason shoves Dani away from him and glares down at Paul. “Here’s what’s going to happen, Paul. You’re not going to open your fucking mouth. You’re not going to tell anyone about my home. You’re not going to tell anyone about me. Your injuries? You’re going to tell everyone you got your pansy, white ass jumped in an alley and that you obviously lost the fight. And you’re going to walk out of here naked. You’re not going to look at Dani, not talk to her, not even think about her, you’re just going leave. NOW.”
“B-but what about my-my clothes?” Paul stutters.
Jason quickly collects all of Paul’s clothes and opens his bedroom window. He pulls out his lighter and lights the clothes on fire. Jason drops them over the railing. “You don’t need them. After fucking my girlfriend in my home and in my bed, you bet your homewrecking sweet ass that you’ll be walking home in nothing but shame and remorse. Now, get the fuck out of my house before I break your legs next.”
“Yes sir. I’m sorry, sir. No one will ever know about this,” Paul rambles on as he struggles to stand up. Once he does, he quickly leaves the bedroom but not before mumbling. “Why couldn’t she date Green Lantern or-or Batman. Wait! Not Batman! Anyone but Batman and Red Hood!”
As the front door slams shut, Jason turns to face his naked girlfriend, Dani. He feels his chest tighten, causing a pain he hasn’t felt since he was a kid and lost his mother and home. He wants to cry in front of her, maybe even scream at her, but all the anger he felt before is gone now. Jason’s only left with a sense of sadness and he doesn’t even know what to do about it.
The silence is killing them. He’s no fool. He can see she’s trying to hold herself together but is failing immensely because she’s looking up at him with those sad, puppy dog eyes.
But a thought quickly crosses his mind: only Y/N’s puppy dog eyes make him give into her. Every time. Y/N’s Y/C/E eyes weakens him, and he always wants to please her when she looks at him.
But Dani’s eyes don’t. There’s no sense of comfort and warmth in them like Y/N’s.
“I’m...I’m so sorry, Jay,” Dani begins.
“Don’t call me that. You don’t get to call me that anymore,” Jason interrupts angrily. He doesn’t even know why she’s apologizing. He knows he can’t forgive her. He won’t forgive her.
Dani scoffs. “You can’t seriously be pissed off at me. You’ve fucking cheated before. You’ve slept around like Bruce does. You can’t fucking hold this against me! I gave you a chance!”
“You’re forgetting that I used to do that!” Jason yells. He runs a hand through his messy dark hair and growls under his breath. He needs someone to calm him down. He needs someone to tell him everything’s going to be all right. He needs the comfort and warmth only one person has: Y/N. Jason realizes he needs her now more than ever, and that scares him a bit. “I haven’t done any of that shit since we’ve been together. The second I realized that I was in love with you, I changed. I changed because I wanted to be with you! And you bringing up my past to try to justify your actions is fucking wrong, Dani.”
“Cry me a fucking river, Jason,” Dani spits out.
“Nope. Not this time. Get the fuck out of my house.”
Dani doesn’t put up a fight. She gets dressed, packs a bag of her things, and tells Jason she’ll be back for the rest later. She does glance at him one last time before she walks out though.
“The thing is...I needed my boyfriend, not a hero.”
The door slams shut, leaving Jason frozen in place. The silence is deadly; he can feel his thoughts racing and screaming loud in his head.
He needs Y/N.
Jason needs his best friend.
Tears force themselves out his eyes as he calls Y/N.
“Hello?”
Jason pauses, and he wonders if he’s making a mistake. Maybe she won’t come. He hasn’t been a particularly good friend to her lately. “Y/N, I need you. I...need you, please...”
“I’m on my way.”
Jason knew he was in deep shit after he finished off a new bottle of whiskey before Y/N came over. He couldn’t help himself. After he hanged up with her, he ripped off his costume and stripped down to nothing but his white Calvin Klein boxer briefs. He felt like he couldn’t breathe, even after lowering the thermostat to 62 degrees.
Perhaps the end of his real first serious relationship was suffocating him mentally and physically. He’s never lived with a girlfriend before either.
He was about to open a new bottle of whiskey just as the front door opens and closes.
“Jason?” Y/N calls out.
Jason whips around fast and grins. He’s buzzed, but not quite drunk yet. “Y/N!”
Y/N is stunned to see Jason in nothing but his underwear as he runs to her and embraces her hard. She stumbles back a bit, but he captures her easily to steady her and holds her tightly to his chest.
“You’re soaked...and cold,”
“It’s raining outside like it always does,” Y/N giggles and gently pushes Jason back a bit. “Let me take off my coat and get warmed up.”
Jason allows her, watches intently when Y/N takes off her raincoat. She’s wearing her black and red plaid pajama pants and a Metallica t-shirt he’s positive she stole from him. She kicks off her booties and displays her light blue fuzzy socks he adores.
Jason knew Y/N had to have been in bed when he called, but she came anyway. She always comes to him because she’s always there for him.
She’s always been here for me, hasn’t she? Why haven’t I seen it before? He thinks to himself.
Y/N smiles softly and reaches a hand out to Jason. He takes it, almost hypnotized by how he does anything she wants. She leads them to the couch, but not before she sees the pizza box and DVD on the entryway table. She raises an eyebrow at him.
“That...was my failed attempt at romance tonight,” Jason admits sheepishly.
Y/N shakes her head, but still smiles. “It doesn’t have to go to waste. We can eat the pizza and watch the movie, right? I mean...only if you want to, of course,” she says.
“Only with you, sweetheart.”
Y/N releases his hand and quickly grabs the pizza and movie. She meets him in the living room where Jason’s already sitting down. She smiles and puts the DVD on. But before she sits beside him, she heads over to the kitchen. She returns with two cans of soda and napkins.
Jason looks down when her soft, small hand reaches out to him...only to take away the unopened bottle of whiskey. “No more tonight...please.”
He can’t help but nod his head. She’s right, he’s had enough to drink. He can’t numb his feelings and thoughts anymore. That’s why when Jason starts crying, he doesn’t feel embarrassment or anything. Y/N’s seen him at his best and worst; and she’s still here no matter what.
The movie is playing, but they’re not watching it. Jason can’t even hear it. When he looks up to see why, he can only see Y/N looking at him.
She doesn’t ask why he’s crying. Jason knows Y/N’s caring nature is all about comfort and understanding. That’s why he doesn’t move or say anything when she scoots closer to hug him. The second she wraps her arms around his neck, he cries freely. He embraces her; allows her scent of cinnamon and sandalwood calm him down.
Jesus Christ...has she always smelled so good? Fuck...this perfume is making me hard right now. Jason shamelessly thinks to himself.
“It’s okay, Jay. What you’re feeling right now, it’s not forever. You won’t feel like this again anytime soon. I promise,” Y/N whispers. She runs her hand through his hair. “I’ll always be here for you. Always and forever.”
Jason opens his eyes and pulls back to see Y/N. Clarity finally hits him. His heart beats faster when he looks down to her soft lips and back up to those puppy dog eyes, that he loves so much. She looks back at him with the same intensity, he wonders if she recognizes what he’s just realized.
“You’ve always been mine, haven’t you?” Jason whispers.
Y/N smiles as she runs both her hands up and down Jason’s chest. “It took you long enough to see it,” she answers.
“I’m a fucking idiot,” he says, nodding his head in agreement.
“No, no you just made a mistake and now you’re going to give me what we both deserve,” Y/N says softly.
“Yes, ma’am.”
Jason finally kisses Y/N. He wanted to slam his lips against hers, but he knew she deserved better than that. He takes his time and allows their mouths to move together, so they can really feel each other. But the second Y/N opens her mouth for more, Jason can’t say no and deny her that.
He tastes her as thoroughly as he can, but he wants more. He pulls away and asks her with his eyes. When she nods her head, he gently pushes her back onto the couch and climbs on top of her so their pelvis’ touch appropriately.
“I would take you to my bed, but I have to burn it because it’s seriously fucked up, doll,” Jason says in between his kisses. “Another man’s cum is stained all over my blankets...in case that’s not clear enough, Dani cheated on me.”
Y/N caresses Jason’s cheek and gently smiles at him. He was expecting her to cuss about Dani or get uncomfortable about talking about what happened, but Y/N did neither of those things. Her eyes said it all.
“It’s okay,” Y/N whispers. She leans up a bit to kiss him. “I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”
Jason closes his eyes and sighs. Y/N was here, and she’s not going anywhere. And that’s all his heart needs to move forward.
When he opens his eyes, Y/N sits up a bit to take off her t-shirt. She’s braless. Jason’s sharp intake of breath is evident when he can’t take his emerald, green eyes off her perfect tits. Jason helps her remove her pajama pants, along with her panties and socks.
His cock is painfully hard in his underwear. Seeing Y/N’s naked body underneath his is giving him all sorts of naughty ideas, but he knows what he really needs right now.
Y/N knows, too. She bites her bottom lip and pushes down Jason’s underwear, revealing his hard cock. She briefly takes in how thick his dick is and how delicious the precum is smeared across the head.
“I promise I’ll take my time learning what you taste like and what makes you cum. I just...I just need to feel...” Jason struggles out, but when Y/N touches his chest, he inhales deeply. “I need to feel warm. I need to feel...you.”
Y/N nods and looks deep into Jason’s eyes. “Feel me, Jay. I want you to feel all of me.”
Jason bravely pushes his cock inside Y/N’s pussy. He closes his eyes and breathes hard. She was everything he was hoping for. He loved the way her walls were tight, warm, and wet. He lowers his forehead to hers and he bathes in the way she moans. Jason pulls back a bit to look down at her; he smiles at the way she bites her bottom lip and throws her head back.
“Fuck...Jay move, please,” Y/N moans.
He’s more than thrilled to do her request, especially when she moans out his nickname only she can call him.
Jason moves his hips. His cock shifts in and out of her steadily before he thrusts deeper. Y/N wraps her arms around him and meets his thrusts so his cock can hit her g-spot. Jason was proud at that moment for having a cock shaped well enough to hit Y/N’s g-spot; he desperately wants to make her cum so hard.
“Oh, fuck...you feel so good, princess. Do you like taking my cock like this?” Jason moans out.
Y/N moans and wraps her legs around Jason’s waist. “Y-yes! Your cock is so big. Please go harder. I-I want to cum!” Y/N cries out.
“Fuck yeah, I’ll fuck you harder! I want you to cum with me! I want to feel you cum on this big cock!” he’s panting, he’s giving her everything she wants.
Jason fucks her harder, slams his hips against Y/N’s body. He’s already on the verge of cumming, but he can’t help it. Y/N’s moans are affecting him. Her tight heat is hitting him harder than ever. He knows this’ll be over any second, but he promised her he’ll take his time when they do it again...maybe for round two tonight.
He lowers a hand to rub her engorged clit as he thrusts faster. He’s so close. He’s so close to a hot release and he wants her to cum with him.
“Cum with me, princess. I want to feel you cum so hard,” Jason pants out, his thrusts are crazy and uneven.
Y/N raises her hips so Jason thrusts five times to make her orgasm. She cries out his name. She cums hard and all over his cock. Her walls tighten around him, and she’s sure her body goes into shock. When Y/N looks up with lustful, hazy eyes, she sees Jason’s face contorted in amazement at her.
More than satisfied, Y/N pinches her own nipples and bites her bottom lip. She wants Jason to cum now.
“Cum in me, Jay. Fill me up with your hot, delicious cum. Mmm...I can’t wait to taste it. I want to suck your big, hard cock next,” Y/N says seductively.
Jason’s face adorably scrunches up as his release hits him. He thrusts a few more times, cumming hard like she did, spurting every drop of his cum inside her. His moans drive her wild. He breathes heavily and continues to ride out his orgasm until he has nothing left to spill inside.
He pulls out and drops beside her, but quickly holds her so she doesn’t fall off the couch.
Because just imagine getting a concussion after having an orgasm.
Y/N hums in the afterglow of sex with Jason. She rests her head on his chest as he rubs her back. He kisses her forehead softly. He feels more than okay now but knows there will be plenty to talk about after the sexy haze fades.
Thoughts of living in the countryside flash into his mind. Watching that sunrise, with Y/N’s in his arms, and she’s carrying their child in her womb.
That perfect life appears real now. His dream doesn’t seem impossible to achieve. With Y/N there, everything seems possible.
“Are you okay now?” Y/N asks softly.
Jason grins and looks down at her. He doesn’t quite know what to say but figures he should try.
“With you in my arms, I’m fucking perfect, princess.”

Song recommendation
It was now far later in the morning, meaning the sun had fully risen and it was a much more reasonable hour to be up at. JJ had left a while ago and John B was still peacefully sleeping (and loudly snoring). Y/n hadn’t been able to go to sleep after her talk with the blond boy and she was now sitting on the couch reading her book (actually reading this time). So, when she heard the front door open, she didn’t bother looking up, assuming it was one of her friends. Who else would just come in like that anyway?
"Hey, there’s coffee made in the kitchen if you want any,” she said, still not pulling her gaze of off her book.
“That’s kind of you to offer, but I’ve already had two cups this morning, I don’t think it would be reasonable for me to have more.” Y/n’s book fell to the ground.
“Sheriff Peterkin, I’m so sorry. I-I thought you were someone else-” she got up from her seat, “-do you, do you need anything, water or uh-”
“You don’t have to bother sweetheart, I’m not planning on staying that long. I just want to talk for a bit,” answered the adult.
“Okay,” she took a pause to swallow. “I’ll go get John B.”
“If you don’t mind, I’ll go get him myself.” Y/n nodded, watching as she disappeared into the hallway leading to her brother’s room.
She started pacing around the living room, ferociously biting the nails on her left hand. It wasn’t every day a cop showed up in your house. She had absolutely no idea why Peterkin would want to talk. Actually, she had about 25 different ideas, starting with the fact her uncle hadn’t been on the island for about 3 months. And the party last night, what if she knew about the gun? Would JJ be in trouble? Whatever it was, it wasn’t good, that she was certain of it.
>>
The conversation went on for much longer than expected. Basically, Peterkin knew about their uncle being awol and she offered to help get dcs off of their back for a while if they helped her in return. She had also mentioned that it wouldn’t be good if they had seen a shipwreck, which of course they denied despite that being actually true. Y/n didn’t fully understand what Peterkin meant. But she knew that it meant there was something valuable in that boat. And Jonh B knew it too. Yet, he was afraid, which was understandable, considering everything. They were pretty much guaranteed to be put in foster care if they got caught. Not good at all.
“You know what? I'm calling it off,” announced John B.
Y/n raised her head from her sketchbook, dropping her pencil on the low table in front of her to listen to what her brother had to say. She had been drawing silently while the other pogues, all sitting in different ridiculous positions across the backyard, talked and did their own things. She was only half listening to what they were saying, sketching messily the outline of the château. It wasn't very good, but it was calming to do. When she heard the seriousness in her brother’s tone, she closed her sketchbook, otherwise she’d be too distracted.
“Peterkin told us that if we stayed out of the marsh, she’d help with dcs.” The girl grimaced remembering the woman’s words.
“And you believed her?” “Yes, JJ I believed her.”
“You really think that she’d help us?” asked y/n. “It’s been more than 6 months, bird. If she really wanted to help, she would have helped earlier, no?”
“Yeah, she’s a cop, an actual cop. And you think she’s telling the truth?” added JJ.
“Look,” John B glanced at y/n. “All we gotta do is stay out of the marsh for a couple days and she’ll help us.”
“I know, I was there.” Kiara snickered softly at her friend’s words. “But I don’t know, I feel like we’re getting tricked or something. What if she’s like trying to lure us out of there-” she gestured to the water behind them, “-because there’s something she doesn’t want us to see, uh? What if it’s about dad?”
J.B rubbed the back of his neck before turning his body slightly to face the ocean. “Look,” he addressed his sister. “I get that you’re curious and you want to know what’s down there, but I'm only trying to do what’s best for us. And I think it would be better if we listened to Peterkin. I’m just trying to keep you safe, to protect you, bug.” His voice softened as he finished his sentence.
“And it didn’t help that JJ was shooting a gun last night!” Y/n raised her eyebrows at Pope, her face clearly showing intrigue. She wondered where this conversation would lead, a fight between the two boys most likely. Her gaze shifted to JJ who seemed annoyed at the Routledge boy’s words.
“You know what, I should’ve let Topper drown your ass.” John B laughed. “Topper was gonna drown me?” “Sure looked like it.”
“Boys can you plea-” Y/n tried to stop the small bickers, miserably failing as her brother interrupted her. “Funny.” A loud sigh escaped the girl’s lips and Kiara beside her pinched the bridge of her nose.
“Have you looked in a mirror?” “Tell me some more. Come on.” “They always win don’t they, man?”
“Kooks versus pogues. They always, always win!” You could hear the frustration dripping from his voice. Which was understandable. He had a point, kooks always won, it was time for a change.
“Goddamn!” “Look, it’s okay!” Kie tried to reassure him. “No, it’s not okay!”
“He’s right,” agreed y/n. “They always win, or find a way to avoid the consequences.”
“Exactly, they don’t want us to go down into the marsh, that means there's something valuable down there and you know it.” He said to John B. “I know you do.”
“And I understand why you wouldn’t want to go,” he pointed to Pope. “You’re the golden boy, you got way too much to risk. And you,” he turned to Kiara. “I mean you’re already rich as fuck anyway.” Okay, that was an exaggeration.
“Why would you bother.”
“But us, you, me and y/n, we’ve got nothing to lose!” His eyes glowed with something y/n hadn’t seen in him in a long time. Hope. It made her sad to think about how JJ really had nothing in his life besides the pogues. But if he was hopeful, then maybe, maybe...
“We really don’t.” “Yes, we do have something to lose.”
“If something goes wrong and dcs comes in, y/n and I would be brought to the mainland in foster care. That means placed with families who probably only care about the check that comes in every month and her and I getting separated from one another and from you guys.”
Y/n thought about what her brother had just said. He had a point, if things went wrong, they could lose everything. Each other mainly and the pogues. It was the worst-case scenario. But if they didn’t get caught, it would make their life so much better. Was it worth all the risk though? That was the question.
“Do you understand what that means? How horrible it would be?” The girl got up from her seat and went to stand next to her brother. “I do,” she said. “I understand, bird.”
“I know that you’re scared and so am I. It’s a pretty big risk. If we get caught, we’re fucked, but listen to what JJ has to say. I think that it might be worth the risk. And if we do get caught-,” she put her hand on his shoulder and turned him around so that he faced her, “we’ll find a way to find each other again. We’re Routledges, we always find a way to solve our problems, don’t we?” Her hand squeezed his shoulder softly. “We’re gonna be alright, bird.”
A small smile drew itself on John B’s lips. “So, what’s the plan,” he said to JJ.
“You got the key to Cameron’s big boat, right?” “No,” J. B’s face scrunched in disagreement.
“There’s scuba gear. We borrow that and then we go down to the wreck this afternoon and that’s what’s gonna save you, man,” exclaimed JJ. “You don’t see rich kids going into foster care, do you?”
Y/n breathed out loudly. She was scared as hell. This was going to be pretty tricky, but she knew something was down there. And if it wasn’t money or something like that, then it was something related to her dad’s disappearance. She could feel it deep into her soul.
>>>
“This is empty, you took empty tanks,” announced Kiara to the group as she furrowed through the bag of oxygen tanks.
Y/n put her head in her hands. Their plan had seemed so perfect and now they didn’t have the one thing they needed for it to work.
“Okay this one’s a quarter full. It’s enough for one of us.” “Love it when a plan comes together.”
“Does anybody know how to dive?” asked the brunette but only to be answered by a chorus of shrugs and denying nods. “Anybody?”
“It’s kind of a kook sport,” JJ looked at her.
“I, … I read about it,” tried Pope.
“Great, Pope read about it, now someone’s gonna die,” exclaimed Kie dramatically.
“Look.” JJ’s gaze circled the group of friends. “You put the thing in your mouth and you breathe. How hard can it be?”
“I don’t think it’s that simple,” confessed y/n.
“Yeah,” agreed Pope. “If you come up too fast, Nitrogen gets in your blood and you get the bends.”
The girl’s eyes widened. She remembered a book she had read a while ago where one of the characters had the decompression sickness (and how tragic their death was).
“Bends like bend over?” JJ joked as he bent his body in a way to stick his butt up in the air. Typical JJ joke, weird and somehow always a bit sexual. Y/n slapped his arm as a way to tell him off.
“JJ, the bends is deadly,” she had a stern expression, “it kills you.” “Oh, right.”
“I can- I can dive,” announced J.B. “Yeah, you can dive I’m cool with that.” “Since when can you dive?”
“No, you can’t dive,” scoffed his sister. “I’ll do it, it’s fine.” “What? The hell?”
“Let’s do some calculations real quick.” Pope pulled out a pen and started writing some numbers. Y/n got up from her seat and went to stand beside him. “So, that boat’s about 30 feet down.” “okay.” “So, it’ll take about 25 minutes at most at that depth.” “Twenty-five.” “Which means you need to make your safety stop at about... 10 feet. Alright? For two minutes.” “Ten feet, two minutes got it.”
They all watched as Kiara jumped straight into the water, her shirt already removed. “Uh, what was that all about?” “I don’t know, but I liked it, a lot.” y/n nudged her brother on the shoulder to get him to stop staring. He cleared his throat.
“Uh, so.” “All righty.”
She sat down on the edge of the boat, waiting for her friend to resurface from underwater. “Yeah. Uh, when you- when you’re down there, you look for the cargo hold. You stick this thing inside and you twist and pull, okay,” explained JJ. “Stick it in, twist and pull.”
“You okay?” asked y/n, while the boys kept on rambling. “Needed a swim?” Kiara rolled her eyes, a small smile on her face.
“Hey!” she called to guys, John b more specifically. “I tied my t-shirt to the anchor about ten feet down. It’s where you need to do your safety stop.”
The Routledge girl admired her friend in the water. Her body moving gracefully as she swam back towards the boat. She seemed so, at ease. It used to be that way for her too, but now, even looking into the darkest part of the water gave her a feeling of vertigo. She wondered if she could still swim as good as she used to. It had been almost a year since the last time she had dove right into the marsh. It felt so far away. If only she was braver.
She hadn’t realised she had completely zoned out until she heard JJ speak. “Zen. Think Zen, you know.” She joined the group on the other side of the hms, her brother already suited for his dive.
“Hey, if we get caught out here in the marsh we’re basically screwed, so,” reminded Pope, “better get a move on.” “Copy that.”
Kiara got up and planted a small kiss on J. B’s cheek. Y/n looked at the two boys next to her with a confused expression. They both shrugged in answer, clearly just as confused as she was. “Diver down?” “Diver down.” She watched as his figure disappeared slowly into the water.
“All right.” “See ya, dude.”
She went to sit next to Kie. “I only love him as a brother,” she mocked her friend. “Yeah right, my ass.”
“It’s just a small kiss y/n/n, it doesn’t mean anything. I still mean what I said yesterday. It’s just that,” she took a pause, her eyes squinting at the sun, “I’m just worried for him, you know he’s going through a lot and then there’s the shipwreck and all.”
“Uh huh, I totally get what you mean,” ironized y/n. “Shut up,” Kie nudged her with her elbow. “No, but seriously-” started the girl before being interrupted by the sound of a police siren behind her.
“Shit, guys.” “Guys, that’s the police.”
“Oh no, no, no, no, no, that is not good. Not good at all.”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.” “Yep that’s the police.” “Just act fricking normal.”
Anxiety bubbled at the pit of y/n’s stomach. Hopefully he wouldn’t recognize her, otherwise she was dead. So dead. She sat down beside Kiara in a somewhat natural position, her legs crossed to keep them from bouncing.
The police boat parked itself beside the hms. Officer Shoupe behind the wheel. “Evenin’ officers,” greeted Pope. “Evening.”
“How you kids doin’ ,” asked Shoupe. “You know the marsh is closed.”
“No.” “No.” “No, wow.” “I didn’t know that.” They all feigned ignorance, hoping to fool the two adults. “Why- why is it closed?” questioned Pope, adjusting his cap nervously.
“Well, we’re conducting a search out here,” informed the man. “Boat went down.” “Oh.” “Oh, no.”
“Seen’ anything?” asked the deputy.
“No.” “No, boats. No.” Y/n’s fingers tapped rhythmically on the boat, trying to keep herself from looking at her brother in the water.
“Where’s your friend you always hang with?” The pace of the rhythm fastened. “He here?” She opened her mouth, trying to think of a good excuse for the missing presence of her brother, but nothing came out.
“He’s working,” lied Kie. All of their heads nodded softly.
“I’m gonna check your little boat out,” announced Shoupe before hopping on the hms. “Yeah.” “Yeah, hop aboard.” The rhythm stopped, y/n’s nails digging into her palms.
He picked up a safety jacket. “You got another one of these?” “Yeah, yeah.”
“Of course, it’s uh, it’s in the hold,” JJ pointed to where the girls were seated. They both got up quickly. “Show him,” instructed Kie. Y/n’s joints were turning white.
“Okay.” JJ opened the hold and pulled out one of the jackets. “Yeah, here we go.” “All right.” The latch closed loudly. Shoupe’s gaze inspected the teens suspiciously. The tension could be cut with a knife.
He climbed on the flat part of the boat. “Be careful.” “Be careful out there, you don’t want to slip.”
He put his sunglasses on, staring at the exact place where John B and the ship were. The pogues exchanged worried glances. Hopefully, he wouldn’t see anything. He stood on the very edge of the boat, his figure towering over the water of the marsh.
“All right,” he finally turned around. Y/n breathed again. “All right.” “All right.”
“Beautiful day, innit?” “Sure is.”
“You let us know if you see anything on your way out,” he ordered as he started the engine. “Will do, will do.”
“We’ll be gone soon, sir.” “Yes, you will,” finally said the man before he vogued away.
Once he was far enough, the group hurried to the side of the boat, all worried about their friend. He’d been under for quite a long time now, there was no way he had any air left.
“He’s definitely out of air,” declared Pope.
At that exact moment, John B surged out of the water. Y/n felt relief take over her body. She felt her whole body unclench and let go of the grip her nails had in her hand.
“There he is!” Exclaimed JJ. “Oh god, Jesus Christ.”
“God damn it, Bird. I’m so glad you’re okay,” spoke y/n.
“Don’t scare us like that!” All of the pogues exclaimed, all so happy that their friend was all right.
“How’d it go down there?” wondered JJ. “Uh,” John b groaned and his sister hurried to the side of the boat to help him get in.
“Did you find anything?”
“Did I find anything?” He repeated throwing a large duffel bag onto the boat.
“Yeah there we go, that’s my boy!” JJ exclaimed excitedly.
“Are you okay?” Y/n asked as he coughed rather loudly. “Yeah, I’m good, but I ran out of air.” Her eyebrows scrunched together on her forehead. God, they were so lucky, what if J.B had ran out of air earlier? Or what if Shoupe had figured out what they were doing? Things could have gotten so bad.
But they didn’t, the girl reminded herself.
“You scared the shit out of me,” confessed Kiara, though it sounded more like a reproach.
“Yeah, same for me,” replied y/n. “Need a hand?” she stuck her hand out at him which he gladly took. The contact of the water with the cuts her nails had made in her hands burned, but she clenched her jaw and ignored the pain. She didn’t want to bother anyone.
“Yeah, the cops were up here but uh, took care of ‘em,” informed Pope.
“My bad.” “You’re all good.” “Yeah, you kinda missed the show, brother.”
“Hey guys?” Kiara’s voice was tinted with worry. “Guys, bogey, two o-clock.”
“What?” They all turned in the direction she was referring to. In the distance they noticed a strange looking boat heading towards them.
“Do you recognize that boat?”
“I’ve never seen it.” Kie put her hand above her eyes to hide herself from the sun. “What are they doing back here? The marsh is closed.”
“Honestly, they could ask us the same thing,” pointed y/n.
“Well, I think it would be better if we didn’t stick around and find out,” said JJ.
“JJ, get the bowline.” “Yeah.”
“Should we wait on ‘em?” asked Pope.
“Uh, I don’t think that would be a great idea,” responded y/n. The boat was coming in very fast and the people driving it looked angry and dangerous. It was much safer to just leave. “Go get the stern, go!” Hurried John B.
The blonde pulled the rope as fast as he possibly could. “Guys, don’t wait for me. Go,” he said. Y/n inspected the unknown boat in the distance, nothing about it seemed familiar. Who could these people be? And what did they want from them? “Let’s go.”
She kept her eyes glued to it as the motor started. “I have a really bad feeling about this,” she confessed, turning her head to John B. behind the wheel. “Yeah, I don’t like this either,” agreed Pope.
“Are they coming for us?” asked JJ. “Sure looks like it.”
“Maybe they’re fishing?” proposed Pope. Y/n’s gaze paused on the two men. They were intimidating, to say the least. And their eyes, both had looks filled with something threatening. It wasn’t anger or hatred, no, it was the eyes of people who would do anything to get what they wanted and that was scary.
“Go, go, go, go!” “Go into the marsh.” “Let’s go!”
“I’m going. Act natural,” stated John B as he directed the hms towards the nearest channel.
The white boat sped up, the motor roaring loudly. “Hey guys, they’re following us,” announced y/n. “Oh, this can’t be good.” “Shit”
“Dude, you gotta go faster!” “I’m going!” “Gun it!”
The sound of a gun shooting in the air echoed in the silence of the marsh. The pogues all went down instinctively. “Holy shit, guys!” “Oh my fucking god, what the fuck!”
JJ grabbed the back of y/n’s shirt with his hand, bringing her closer to him. “John b get down!” almost hissed the girl. Another shot fired, y/n clung onto JJ.
“Oh my god, we’re gonna die!” yelled Pope. A third shot fired. Y/n’s eyes caught the net at the back of the boat and an idea sparked in her head. She looked at Kiara, who clearly had thought of the same thing.
“Pope, move,” ordered the brunette as her friend stood to go grab the green net. Another shot flew into the air beside her, the bullet barely missing her.
“Get down, y/n!” shouted her brother desperately. She headed towards the back of the boat and threw the net into the water. It slid down the current and got caught right into the motor of the men’s boat, making the engine come to a halt abruptly. It clanged loudly and the two men shouted in anger. A sigh of relief left the girl’s lips. Her plan had worked.
“Let’s go, let’s go, let’s go!” hurried Pope. A last gunshot was heard but the hms was too far away to be reached.
“Oh my god!” “Whew!” The pogues all cheered and laughed at their small victory. They were all so glad to be away from these men and all in one piece. Kiara pulled y/n into a hug.
“Y/n, don’t you ever do something like that again. You fucking scared the crap out of me,” said John B as they approached the dock of the château. “I can’t promise anything. Who knows when someone else will shoot at us?”
They all hurried themselves onto the dock, excited to know the content of the bag. “What do you guys think it is?” “Maybe it’s like jewelry? Would be a weird place to keep it but who knows?” “Gotta be money, right?”
“That or a couple of keys with street value to the low- to mid-mils!” JJ’s eyes glistened with excitement. Y/n smiled softly.
“Can we please just open the bag?” burst Pope. The group all started at him.
“Wow Pope,” y/n giggled. “That was a rare outburst of emotions.”
“You guys are literally killing me with anticipation. Open the bag. We almost died over this.”
John B. pulled out a smaller bag which contained a metal canister. Every pair of eyes was fixed onto it as he pried it open and revealed a compass. Y/n kneeled next to her brother not believing what she was seeing. They exchanged a look, neither of them saying anything. They both knew what that object was and what it meant to their father, but what the hell was it doing there?
“Oh, wow. Yup, that’s about right.” Pope was clearly disappointed by their findings. “Good job, everybody. We found a compass.” Y/n raised a trembling hand to the compass, carefully taking it into her own hands to examine it. Was this really what she thought it was? How could it be? It didn’t make any sense.
JJ removed his hat in frustration. “Dude, what? It’s not worth anything.”
A small smile creeped on Jonh b’s face, his eyes still not looking away from the compass. “This was,” he started.
“This was our father’s,” completed y/n.

Six: The Breakfast Club
“What are you thinking about?”
“H-Huh? What do you mean?”
“You’re smiling for the first time today. What are you thinking about?”
“...Stan.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Apparently, I had slept through all of my alarms because when I awoke the next day, it was almost nine. Cursing aloud, I sprang out of bed and zoomed to my closet, ripping out any clothes I could find. Not having time to pull together something totally retro as per usual, I threw on a maroon hoodie, wedged into blue skinny jeans, and slipped on my white sneakers. I applied deodorant and stuck a piece of gum into my mouth before slinging my backpack on. The school was a fifteen-minute walk from my house. I was going to be so fucking late. I was skipping every other step on my way downstairs when I heard a voice call out to me.
“Whoa, you’re still here?”
On my right was Jacob, sitting in the living room and watching television. He stood from the couch and slowly approached me with a smirk. “What are you doing here still?”
“What are you doing here still?”
“I don’t have classes today, Bug,” He lightly teased before gently pushing me towards the door. “Let’s go before you miss anymore school. Hopefully, you don’t get detention.”
“I won’t, Jake.”
I did. As soon as I opened the door to my English class, all eyes were on me like a newcoming circus act. Ms Anderson’s eyes cut to me the second I stepped in and before I knew it, she was stomping towards me, gently ushering me out of the room with her. When we were alone, she crossed her arms and stared down at me. I felt like a child getting scolded for breaking an expensive vase or something. “(Y/N), this is your fourth tardy this month.”
“I know…”
“Is there something we need to talk about?”
There are so many things I need to talk about.
“No… I just… um… I-It’s been a rough few days…”
“Well, I would let this slide, but I’ve already broken the rules twice for you. I’m sorry, dear, but I’m going to have to give you detention. Okay?”
Dammit, Jake… “Okay, fine. Can I just go back to class now?” I sighed. My teacher nodded and opened the door for me. Stepping inside, I was met with the smiles of Dina, Stan and Ricky all directed towards me. I returned the smiles towards my two friends before taking my seat beside Dina. Throughout class, two eyes bore into the back of my head, and I tried my best not to turn and look at who they belonged to. He was catching on. On my way to choir, I heard Ricky calling out to me. He was pushing and shoving past students until he was by my side.
“Babe, what’s been going on with you?” He gently nudged me, but my eyes stayed trained forward. “Oh, so the silent treatment… Are you gonna tell me what I did or am I gonna have to figure it out?” Silence. “Right, okay. I get it. Hey, listen, when you’re out of your bitchy mood, make sure to come talk to me.” And with that, he turned and walked in the opposite direction. Letting out a breath, I slowed my pace along with the beat of my heart. I never wanted anyone to dictate the way I felt, the way my anxiety sky-rocketed when they were around. But it seemed I was letting Ricky do everything to me.
When lunchtime rolled around, I wanted nothing more than to eat my first meal of the day. All throughout English and choir, my stomach had been curling into itself and I felt stupid for not at least grabbing a granola bar before I left home. After grabbing my food, I joined Stan at a near-vacant lunch table. He had been mindlessly picking at his lunch when I sat across from him. “Good afternoon, beautiful.” I whispered. Hearing my voice, he didn’t need to look up.
“Hey, (Y/N)...”
“(Y/N)? Whoa, what’s wrong?”
“Uh, it’s just Syd. She won’t talk to me…”
A pang of jealousy went through my heart. Knowing we’d never talk about our kiss the other night didn’t prevent my wave of disappointment whenever he mentioned Sydney. I mean, how do you even kiss a girl and then talk about a totally different one days later? As much as I love Stan, he could be an idiot sometimes…
I hadn’t even noticed I was spacing out until his voice spoke loud enough for me to snap back into reality. He had been staring at me with raised brows, an expectant look on his face. “O-Oh, sorry… Uh, do you wanna hang out later? Like, when we get home?” I calmly asked, my eyes flickering to the fading bruise decorating his eye. He shifted in his seat and returned back to his lunch.
“Um… I’ll see.” He mumbled, my throat constricting at his words.
-------------------------------------------------
Whitaker watched me like a hawk as I turned into the girls’ restroom.
“Don’t think I don’t know that trick, (Y/L/N)! You better get to the gymnasium as soon as you’re done!”
“Yes, sir.” I mumbled and closed the door behind me. To be honest, I didn’t think he knew that trick and was absolutely planning on spending the entirety of my detention in the restroom. Letting out a sigh, I leaned against the wall and texted Jacob.
Me: I got detention. Pick me up at 7 please?
Jake: Haha! I’ll be there, don’t worry
Jake: And don’t try hiding out in the bathrooms. Whitaker knows that trick
Me: Noted
Pocketing my phone, I pushed the door open and trudged to the gym. Even with the doors closed, I could hear Whitaker screaming at whoever else was inside. With a small groan, I lazily used my body to open one of the doors, the principal’s voice quieting as the screech of the hinges echoed throughout the room.
“Ms (Y/L/N), I would have thought that after getting detention for tardiness, you’d learn to be more punctual. Take a seat!” Whitaker boomed. Rolling my eyes, I moved over to the bleachers, surprised to see Sydney, Stan, Brad, Dina and… Jenny Tuffield.
I could be irritated with people all I wanted, but I never completely ignored or even spat insults or such at them, unless they truly did something to hurt me or the ones I care about. Hence the reason I ignore Ricky. But Jenny brought out a side of me I really despised. It was a side of myself that thought of the worst things to say and spewed them out without hesitation, resulting in a back-and-forth war between the two of us. It usually ended with death threats and flipping the birds to each other, but we’ve never physically fought. That could change one day, who knows? I could feel her sickening smirk as I passed her to sit in front of Stan, who looked bewildered to see that I was here with him in detention. I patted his knee before turning back to Whitaker, who had been waiting for me to do as I was told. Satisfied, he continued on.
“Now that you all are here,” He cut me a look. “I want you to take the next few hours and think about your mistakes. And carve out in your mind a plan for change. Determine how to improve yourselves. Define what the word ‘respect’ means to you.”
Get a job, dude…
“Now you can start by respecting this beautiful gymnasium. Between now and seven p.m., you’re gonna scrape up every goddamn piece of gum from the bleachers,” He stepped forward and slammed a box down in front of us, no doubt full of the tools needed for our manual labor. The six of us all rolled our eyes as Whitaker stepped back again. “Get started.”
“Uh, Mr Whitaker, sir,” I heard Stan from behind me. “Um… Will there be a break for snacks or dinner?”
Silence was his answer. Whitaker stared at Stan as if he’d just asked him to lick his shoes before exiting the gym. From behind me, I felt him lean forward towards Sydney, picking up on their very quiet and very short exchange.
“Hey, I’m really sorry-”
“No. I’m not talking to you, okay?”
Reaching over, I tugged on Stan’s jacket sleeve, the boy shuffling so that our faces were right beside each other. “What are you doing in here?”
“I called File a motherfucker.”
“You- What?”
“Okay,” Dina’s voice interrupted us, causing everyone to turn to her as she stood from her spot beside Brad. “I know none of us wanna be here right now, but I was thinking, if we divide and conquer the bleachers, maybe we could be done before seven and Whitaker will let us out early, so…” Her suggestion earned a smile from her boyfriend and a sarcastic remark from Jenny, who I nearly forgot even existed. She clapped her hands, everyone turning to her.
“Go team!” She mimicked your everyday cheerleader as Dina sat back down, a look of irritation on her face.
“I’m not a cheerleader.”
“Maybe you should be.”
“Maybe you should be in prison.”
“Ooh. That’s my wet dream…” She drawled out, running her tongue over her top teeth. I rolled my eyes and turned my head away.
“I don’t know, guys,” Stan spoke up. “This gum has been here for decades. I don’t think Whitaker actually checks. It’s just a social experiment, like a simulation.”
“Oh. Well, someone’s been smoking their supply.” Brad quipped. I narrowed my eyes and was about to give a sly remark when Jenny interrupted.
“You know what?” She whipped her body around to face us all, that wicked smile stretched across her face. “I have an idea. Why don’t we play Fuck, Marry, Kill?”
I couldn’t help myself. “What are you, thirteen?” I snarled. Our fellow delinquents stared between us with unease. “You say it like we’re about to huff some fucking gasoline. Are you supposed to be some kind of badass?”
Her eyes slid over to me, her grin widening. “Awe, Zip, I haven’t spoken to you in so long, I thought you died…”
“I wish you died…”
“So, who goes first?” Her head snapped towards everyone else, her finger moving towards each person in the room. “Eenie… meenie… miney… Brad.” She whispered out. Brad looked towards his girlfriend.
“Guess if I had to-”
“No. Not another word.” Dina shook her head.
“Oh, what about you, Miss Goody-Goody? Or are you too afraid to play?” Jenny gave a fake pout.
“Why would I be afraid?”
“Cool then. Fuck, Marry, Kill. Stanley Barber… Mr Whitaker… and… Syd.”
“Well, clearly, I’m killing Whitaker.”
“So are you gonna fuck Syd or marry her?”
Dina exhaled through her nose before looking to her right, eyes locking with Sydney. “Total life goal to marry your best friend, if Syd’ll have me.” She softly spoke, bringing a small smile to my face at their soft exchange. Of course, though, Jenny had to ruin it.
“Oh, so then it’s you and Stan in an all-day bone sesh. Ugh, you little slut.”
So over the sound of her fucking voice, I threw my head back in annoyance. “Jesus Christ, Jenny, you are so fucking boring!”
“No need to tell him about it,” She laughed tauntingly. “I’m guessing you wanna go next, since you got my attention. Or are you saving all of the sex and marriage for your little boyfriend?”
“Oh, bite me.”
“Ooh, where?”
Snapping, I slapped my hand down on the space beside me, my gaze set and locked on her. “No one gives a shit about you, Jenny!”
“And people care about you, Zip?! Where’s your fucking dad?!”
Fire in my eyes, I lunged towards her, but felt hands grabbing onto my shoulders and sitting me back down. The hands soothingly rubbed my arms as Jenny cackled. “Come on, (Y/N), it’s just all fun here… Now, for you, your very own Ricky Berry… Stan… and Dina.”
Scratching my cheek, I rolled my eyes so far back, I could feel them do a three-sixty rotation. “Fucking hell, you never give up. Fine, I’d marry Dina, fuck Stan, kill Ricky.”
Jenny lowly whistled as the hands on my arms slowly slid away. “But Zip, I thought you two were in love,” Her grin was something of evil as her brows bounced. “You guys had so much fun, fucking at his party. Oh! Or is it because you were drunk off your ass and he wasn’t?”
“Jenny, shut the fuck up-”
“No consent whatsoever… Boyfriend of the year…”
Having Jenny see me break down in front of everyone was not a moment in time I’d ever want to experience. She already got what she wanted, a reaction from me. She didn’t need a bonus. So, standing to my feet, I darted to the locker room, trying my best to block out Jenny’s laughing. I couldn’t help the tears that cascaded down my cheeks as I stood in front of one of the mirrors, hastily wiping them away.
Why are you letting her get to you? Why are you letting Ricky get to you? He can’t hurt you anymore, stop crying about it!
The creaking of the door sent my body into a stiffened, frozen state. That was, until I heard his voice, “Hey, lovely…” Turning my head to Stan, I sighed out.
“Hey, beautiful…” I sniffled as he made his way over to me. We stood in a comfortable silence, Stan understanding that I needed a moment to compose myself. “S-Sorry about that. You know I just fucking hate her guts-”
“No, I get it. We all hate her guts.” He cracked a smile. I quietly chuckled and stuffed my hands into my hoodie pockets. “Do you wanna talk about it, (Y/N)?”
“Not really… I don’t wanna think about it right now…”
“I know, but, like, it’s good to talk to someone about… you know, traumatic things that happen so it doesn’t bottle up-”
“Yeah, I know, Stan, I just can’t- I can’t think about it right now. We can do it, like, later… Not at school.”
He slowly nodded. “Totally. I understand. So… you ready to head back out? We’re not actually scraping gum. So we can just sit and talk.”
“I’d love to just sit and talk with you.”
Ten minutes later, everyone was spread out, Syd more than anyone. I had no idea where she’d gone, but apparently she stormed out shortly after I did. I guess Jenny knew how to get under everyone’s skin that day. Said girl was sitting against a brick wall away from the bleachers, where the other two pairs of us were. Brad and Dina were hugged up on each other, whispering into each other’s ears and quietly laughing. Stan and I were on the edge of the bleachers, the boy stretched across the one on the first level, and I on the second. As he fiddled with his rubix cube, my index finger reached out and gently traced his facial features. I started off with his brow, careful of his wound on the edge. It was clearing up and that caused a smile to appear on my face. Next, I let my fingertip brush across his lashes and he furrowed his brows, trying to focus on his cube. My finger then glided down the bridge of his nose. I quietly laughed when his eyes comically crossed to look at my finger. With a giggle, Stan jutted his chin upwards to gently kiss my fingertip. “Stop distracting me.”
My hand lazily dropped to his hair as I whispered out an apology. Not too long afterwards, I heard a voice quietly call out Stan’s name, but he was too fixated on his toy. My eyes looked to Sydney, who was standing in the doorway, desperately trying to get the boy’s attention. When she called out to him again, he actually looked at her. Looking between the two of us, she frantically motioned for Stan to come outside. When he only raised a brow, she did it again. Letting out a sigh, he wordlessly handed me his cube before sitting up and following Syd out of the gym, closing the door behind him to allow them privacy. Puffing out a sigh, I began playing with the multicolored cube in my hands. I never was very good with rubix cubes, my patience always ran too thin to finish them. That time didn’t seem to be an exception, either, because minutes in, I set it down and rested my head down to hopefully sleep off the rest of detention.
As I began to doze off, I heard the double doors screech upon Sydney’s arrival. She anxiously walked past me over towards the other side of the gym, where Dina and Brad had moved to suck face. I heard her call out to her friend a few times before she loudly spoke, “Look, Dina, I need a tampon right now.”
“Just dig in my bag.”
“I… I do need you, but for… but for something else.” She stuttered out. And with that, the two exited the gym. Suspicious about what my friends were plotting without me, I slowly sat up from my lying position and sat normally on the bleacher, waiting for one of them to come back. Hearing footsteps approach me, I knew it either had to be Brad or Jenny, and I was praying to the stars it was the former. As unusual as it sounded. The bleacher moaned under Brad’s weight as he sat beside me.
“Hey, Zip,” He greeted with a smile. I side-eyed him for a second before turning my gaze to my shoes. Scoffing, he shifted his legs. “You’re ignoring me now? Oh, come on. We’re friends, Zip. Good friends.”
“We are not friends, Bradley,” I almost laughed. “You’re friends with Ricky and I want nothing to do with him, so… I guess you know where the two of us stand.”
“Okay, well… Regardless, as Ricky’s best friend, I can say for him that what he did was fucked up. Right?”
“Yeah, no shit.”
“Right! But listen, we all make mistakes, Zip. Ricky really loves you, you know that, right? He would never do anything to hurt you.”
I was silent for a bit, only to prevent myself from decking Brad in the nose. “Well, he clearly didn’t love me enough. Not enough to respect my right to consent-”
“Zip-”
“And you know what, Brad?” I slowly stood to my feet. “I’ve had enough of you defending everything he does! You can tell Ricky to get lost and leave me the hell alone!”
Before he could utter another word, I marched straight through the double doors. Three figures stood ahead, and I was more than ready to push past them, but I recognized each of them. Halting in my tracks, I saw Dina, Syd and Stan all nervously staring at me. Confused, I put my weight on both my feet. “Uh… what’s going on?”
Dina was the first to answer. “We… need your help distracting the janitor to get his keys.”
“W-What? Why?”
“Well, Stan and Syd hooked up in the library and got it on camera-”
“You guys hooked up again?” I turned to my best friend, who quickly turned to Sydney. She frowned and stood up straighter.
“You told her?”
“S-She’s my best friend! She tells me when she has sex!”
Widening my eyes, I let out a scoff. “I had sex, I don’t have sex.”
“Well, whatever, can you do it?” Sydney changed the subject. I looked between the three in confusion.
“Okay, but why me?”
“Because you have boobs. Like, a nice size.”
“Uh-”
“And,” Dina cut in. “Because you’re a great actress. The best out of all of us.”
My lips quirked up into a small smile, Dina satisfied that she boosted my confidence enough for me to accept. Lucky for them, my locker was just across from the gym, so I unlocked it and pulled out a spare tee. ‘Can’t seduce anyone wearing that’, Dina told me.
Shortly after, Stan and I were in a corner as I changed my top. He was nervously staring down at his shoes as I pulled my hoodie off. “I didn’t want you to be the distraction. Are you sure you’ll be okay doing this?”
“I’m not seducing him, Stan,” I chucked my hoodie towards him. He looked up to catch it, but as soon as his eyes raked over my almost bare chest, they darted downwards again. “That’s just a back-up plan.”
“O-Oh, okay…” He nodded as I pulled my shirt on.
Minutes later, I entered the classroom Carl the Janitor had been cleaning. He looked up at me and nodded. “Hey, (Y/N).”
“Hi, Carl. Listen. So, I kinda snuck out of rehearsal earlier and I need to get back into the auditorium. But guess what? The door’s locked. I really don’t want Ms Turner to find me out. Do you think you could help me? Please?” I tapped my fingertips together as he sighed.
“You know I can get in trouble doing that…”
“I-I know, but it would mean so much to me. I promise I won’t get you caught.”
“Well, what about the back entrance? She never locks those doors.”
He was right. Clearing my throat, I looked to the side. “W-Well, she did today…”
His eyes narrowed in suspicion for what felt like forever before relenting, handing his ring of keys over. “Okay, just get them back to me in twenty minutes.”
“You’re the best, thank you.” I grinned and stepped out of the room. Swinging around the corner, I found Dina and Syd waiting for me. Upon my arrival, they both grinned. “Nothing wrong with asking politely, ladies. We got less than twenty.” I cheekily smiled, handing the keys over to Sydney. Dina chuckled and crossed her arms as I took my hoodie from Syd and pulled it back on.
“So, what’s the plan?”
“The plan is quite simple.” Stan’s voice appeared as he approached us, two microwavable burritos in his hands.
-------------------------------------------------
“First, we distract Whitaker with burritos. I’m gonna put these in the microwave and blast these bad boys up on high, and then…”
The explosion muffled by the closed door was enough to get Mr Whitaker rushing out of the teachers’ lounge. “What the hell- What the hell is goin’ on down there?! Jesus!”
“...Whitaker will hear it and come runnin’. When he takes off from the teachers’ lounge, the coast’ll be clear straight through to the principal’s office, and then we make our move.”
As the principal moved past the closet we were all hiding in, Stan slowly opened the door, giving the four of us the chance to run out. As Dina and I silently followed Whitaker, Stan and Syd headed towards his office, keys in the latter’s hands.
“Syd, you’re the key man… Key lady.”
“Wait, why am I the key lady?”
“Because you’re… good with your hands.”
“Ew.”
“Dina and (Y/N), you two are lookout. You keep eyes on Whitaker.”
I crouched down and peeked around the corner as Dina did the same right above me. Whitaker had just opened the door to the microwave, the smoke engulfing him as he coughed and fanned it away.
“The burrito bomb should keep him busy for awhile.”
The two of us watched in amusement as he grabbed the fire extinguisher from the fire emergency supplies and sprayed it into the closet.
“That man cannot resist a fire extinguisher, which will give us the time we need to get in. Burrito bombs are disgusting. Last time I set one off, my whole house smelled like bean farts.”
“True story.”
“Gross.”
Sooner than we expected, Whitaker took off from the crime scene in a hurried pace. Dina and I quickly rushed towards our friends, the girl waving her arms in the air as I readied the door to the closet for us.
“Anything goes wrong, lookout crew, you signal us… and everyone take cover.”
Once Stan and Syd noticed Dina, they scurried off down the hall to hide. I pulled Dina into the closet with me and silently closed the door as we crouched down.
“That is literally the worst idea I’ve ever heard.”
“It’s fair. It’s totally fair. Can you think of a better one?”
…
“Our best hiding spot’s probably behind the trophy case. And we wait…”
A collective sigh of relief filled the closet as the savior ringing echoed through the halls.
“...for the smoke alarm. Which will buy us more time. Which we will need, because there are a shit-ton of keys. Like a metric shit-ton, it’s ridiculous.”
After our principal took off away from his office again, the closet door slowly creaked open as Dina and I watched Syd and Stan successfully enter the principal’s office.
“Once we’re in, we head straight for the security system in the closet. And that’s it!”
The smoke alarm cut off its insistent ringing within seconds. My heart thumped in my throat as Whitaker’s form stormed down the hallway, towards his office in angry strides. Thankfully, Syd and Stan ducked down before he caught sight of them. As soon as he passed us, I gently nudged Dina out of the closet. “Go create some big distraction that’ll lure him away,” I whispered under my breath. “I’ll keep him from the door.” I stood up straight as Dina nodded and silently hurried down the opposite end of the hall.
“Whatever you do, do not panic. Do not bail… or we are screwed.”
Whitaker was seconds from the door and I had yet to come up with a way to get him distracted again.
“Okay, but what happens if your plan goes to shit?”
Finding the key on his ring, he began jiggling it into the lock.
“It won’t.”
I stepped out of the closet, breathing labored in panic.
“But what if it does?”
When the lock sounded, I let out an ear-splitting scream that had Whitaker jumping three feet in the air. When his gaze settled on me, he marched my way, steam practically shooting from his ears. “(Y/L/N), what the hell is the matter with you?!”
“U-Uh- Uh, something happened down that way!” I blurted out, pointing down in Dina’s direction. His head followed my finger before it snapped back to me.
“Well?! What ha-”
A crash sounded.
“Improvise.”
The poor man shook his head in exhaustion. “I’m too goddamn old for this shit…” He whined before taking off down the hall, away from his office. Once the coast was clear, Syd and Stan peeked up, watching as I gave them a thumbs-up. They gratefully smiled my way before standing and finishing the job.
“And if all goes well, as it should, we grab the footage, our sexcapade remains private, and nobody gets expelled.”
My shoulders sagged as Sydney walked out of the office with Stan behind her, holding up the flashdrive in her hand.
“Let’s hope this shit works.”
-------------------------------------------------
It totally worked. After our brilliant scheme, the four of us sat in front of the lockers to rest, my form sandwiched between Stan and Dina. He kissed the flashdrive and let out a breath. “Oh, I thought we were screwed…”
“We were screwed, but holy shit, we did it.” Dina quietly laughed along with the rest of us.
“Thank you guys,” Sydney smiled, the three of us turning to her. “Seriously.” She chuckled as I reached my hand over to Stan’s pocket. Catching onto what I was doing, he fished his case out himself.
“Wonderful idea, Nugget,” He pecked the back of my hand with his lips before I could move it away and slid a joint from his case. “Any takers?”
“You’re not serious.” Dina frowned as Stan took out his lighter. He nodded to her with furrowed brows.
“He is.” I grinned fondly at my best friend as he lit up the end of his joint and inhaled the smoke before handing it over to me. I happily accepted it and took a hit as Dina glanced around us, hoping no adults were around to witness the scandalous act. She choked out a laugh when Sydney accepted the joint from me.
“Since when do you smoke weed?”
Sydney slyly smiled and stretched the smoke over to her, my own hand taking it to give her better access. “Oh, come on, Dina. Everyone’s doing it. Don’t you wanna be cool like us?” We all giggled and watched as Dina hesitantly took a hit from the joint. Her own snorting encouraged our laughter to increase, the four of us blissfully unaware of what lay ahead of us just in the locker room down the hall.
We sat in that hallway for the next half hour, talking about everything and nothing as our time of release approached closer. When the joint was finished, we entered the gym to enjoy our fading highs in peace. Dina headed over to the bleachers, and Stan and I sat on the bench beside the locker room, as Sydney headed inside to use the bathroom. The two of us sat in a comfortable silence as he shifted the colorful columns of his cube. I rested my head on his shoulder and closed my eyes, and soon after, I felt his head rest against mine. “So… are you gonna need a ride home?” He whispered.
“No. Jake is picking me up.”
“That’s good, that’s good. Um… now do you wanna talk about how you’re doing? I know that, like, we’re still in school and we’re not entirely alone, but I just wanted to see how you were after you had to-”
“I’m doing better,” I interrupted his rambling. “Thank you.”
His hands froze their fiddling before one shyly crept close to mine. I felt his fingers graze my thigh as he interlocked our fingers in a tight hold. “Of course, Nugget.” He muttered right as Dina walked to the door to the locker room, giving me a smirk before walking inside. Stan then held up his rubix cube and chuckled. “Wanna try and solve it together?”
“Oh, my god, yes.” I laughed. And with that, we were using our free hands to turn and shift the cube around, hushed laughter filling the gymnasium as we told each other ‘no, not that way’, ‘turn the blue one’, and ‘yeah, yeah, that one’ for the next minute and a half of peace. Once our time was up, the door to the locker room slammed open and a teary-eyed Dina stormed out, a frantic Brad behind her.
“Babe, wait, please. Syd’s lying, I swear to god! Please! She’s lying!” As Dina walked out of the gym, Whitaker walked in, watching her go. “You’re not seriously breaking up with me right now!”
“Hey! Which one of you punks eats burritos?” Our principal shouted, Stan and I stifling our laughter in each other’s hair and shoulder. “Alright, I don’t know what the hell went on tonight, but I wanna see everyone in my office first thing in the morning!” He gave us one last look before exiting again. As soon as he was gone, Brad turned to Syd with a clenched jaw.
“I offered you a truce, and you fucked it up. This is on you. You remember that.” He pointed at her before angrily stomping out. Stan and I detangled ourselves from each other as Jenny walked out of the locker room with crossed arms.
“Ah, another day in paradise,” She looked between the three of us as her smile faded. “So, you guys wanna get wasted?”
I scoffed. “Fuck off, Jenny.”
Waving Stan and Syd goodbye minutes later, I joined Jacob in his car. He smiled over at me as I clipped my seatbelt on over myself. “So? How boring was it?”
“Oh, a total fucking snoozefest.” I rolled my eyes, my cousin chuckling and pulling off towards our home. Halfway through the car ride, I heard him turn down his music and sigh.
“Bug, what’s going on with you?”
“Huh?” I turned to him with raised brows.
“You’re… You’re different. You’re quiet, you skip dinner sometimes, you’re sleeping in. You never do that, especially the quiet part. Jesus, you’re so loud-”
“Okay, asshole, I get it!” I laughed quietly before going completely silent again. Not realizing I proved his point, I jumped when he poked my arm.
“See? Something’s wrong with you. What is it? Is it Ricky?”
“I-” I don’t know why I wanted to keep the whole situation a secret. Things like this needed to come into light and Ricky deserved to be exposed. Sensing my hesitancy, Jacob nodded.
“There we go. What did he do this time? Did he forget an anniversary? No? Did he… cheat?” Silence. “Did he do worse?” My eyes darted away. “(Y/N), did he do worse…?”
“I don’t know if I should say, Jake-”
“You absolutely should say it, (Y/N). Did he hit you?”
“No.”
“No? Did he… you know, touch you?” His tone softened as tears welled up in my eyes. “Bug, what happened…?”
“H-He raped me…” I cried and covered my face. “I got drunk on his birthday and he took advantage of it. A-And then he lied and said we were both drunk. B-But everyone else said he wasn’t even drunk.”
A beat of silence passed before the roar of the engine slid in pitch. I looked up at the houses and street signs that flew past us in a blur. “J-Jake, what are you doing?!”
“We’re gonna pay Ricky a visit.”
Before I knew it, we were in front of Ricky’s house. Jacob silently released himself from his restraint and exited the car. I sunk down in my own seat as I watched Ricky walk out of his home and towards his car. Upon seeing Jacob, he happily waved, but his smile vanished when Jacob decked him in the face so hard he fell to the ground. My breathing sped up as I jumped out of the car, speeding over to the two. “Jake! Stop!” I screamed as he straddled Ricky, landing punch after punch on his face. Ricky cried out and tried to push him off, but it was no use. Jacob was so much stronger than him. I knew pulling on him and screaming at him would do nothing, so I looked up and turned all around, watching as some neighbors peeked out their windows and front doors to watch the scene unfold. When I heard a crunch, I whipped back towards them and almost hurled at the bloodied mess that was Ricky’s face. “Jake, come on!” I screamed and pulled him off.
Stumbling to his feet, Jacob grabbed Ricky by his collar and lifted him close. “I don’t ever wanna see you near her. I don’t wanna hear that you spoke to her, I don’t even wanna know that you looked at her,” He growled, Ricky frantically nodding. “Don’t ever associate yourself with my sister ever again or I will make sure your eyes are swollen shut next time. Got it? Got it?!”
“Yes.” Ricky wheezed out before he was dropped to the ground.
“We’re going home, Jake! Jake, let’s fucking go home!” I screamed and ran to his car, getting in the driver seat. Chest heaving, he strode back over to the car and got in the passenger seat, sighing heavily as I drove away, leaving behind a groaning Ricky. I hadn’t even noticed his bloodied and bruised knuckles until I parked the car. Like a worried mother, I helped him out and over to the front porch.
“Hey, lovely!” I heard Stan call out. Looking up, I saw that he and Syd were just about to enter his house. “Do you wanna-”
I fished out my keys and hurriedly unlocked the door, pushing my cousin inside and shutting the door behind us. After ordering him into the bathroom, I found some bandages and hydrogen peroxide and joined him inside. The next few minutes were spent in silence, save for the soft hisses that escaped him when I dabbed the chemical onto his cuts. As I wrapped his hands, I felt his eyes on me. “(Y/N)?”
“Yes?”
“If he tries anything ever again, tell me immediately.”
“I know.”
“I’m serious,” He ducked his head down to meet my eyes, his own shining with unshed tears. “I promise you, he won’t lay a finger on you as long as I’m around.”
Setting down the blood-covered cotton ball, I nodded and allowed my lip to quiver.
“I know.”
Who Are You Talking To | C.E
Summary: Reader is fed up with Chris not spending time with her on her week-long break.
Pairing: Chris Evans x Black!Reader
Word Count: 1.8k
Warning(s): None!
A/N: I accidentally shared this through my personal account! I apologize for any confusion if I tagged you the first time!
Chris was ecstatic when I informed him of the dates for my Fall Break.
He planned out everything we would do together. From planting a blanket in the middle of a park for a lovely picnic to strolling through farms for a pumpkin to carve and sit on our porch. He did all of that.
Yet he’s one strike away from me slapping the shit out of him. He’s been blowing me off every second and I’m due to return for work in two days. We hadn’t done any of what he promised we would accomplish together weeks ago. Instead, he handled work business downstairs for the first part of the day and followed that up with indulging in his own hobbies. I wasn’t a part of any of it.
To add on to it, his Zoom sessions weren’t successful and that prompted him to radiate negativity. Dinner time consisted of him giving me short answers or grunts and through it all, I remained optimistic. I figured being positive and not calling him out on his behavior right then would flip a switch in him to acknowledge how he was acting towards me but nothing happened.
My feet connected with the cold wooden flooring, goosebumps rising on the parts of my body that were exposed because of the tank top and pajama shorts I wore. The clock read 11:54 p.m. I’m praying Chris let Dodger out for the last time this evening.
The volume of the television in the living room increased the closer I dragged my feet to where I presumed he would be resting. Turning the corner, Dodger was the first one I spotted as he slept soundly on his stuffed animal right by the entrance to the room. Chris, on the other hand, watched CNN on blast as if he was an old man struggling to hear; his arms were folded across his chest while he laid on his side and blankly stared at the bright screen.
I rolled my eyes at the absurdity of my week spent at home. “Chris.” I called in a firm voice that was loud enough for Dodger to only blink his eyes open and instantly travel back to Dreamland.
My boyfriend only shifted his gaze to look at me. “Hm?”
“Did you let Dodge out one last time?”
“Mm-mm.”
Breathe Y/N, breathe. I let out a soft sigh as I bent down to gently shake the canine awake. “Dodger, honey. Let’s go outside.” I knew from Chris’ response he wouldn’t be letting our dog out anytime soon. The man would probably drag himself down the hall to bed as the sun rose for a new day.
Dodger simply obeyed my soft command by standing and putting on a show of dramatically stretching. As we made our way towards the back door right behind my miserable boyfriend, I made sure to cut my brown eyes at his lounging figure and hoped he could feel my glare.
Once again, my skin tingled as the cool night air caressed my legs and arms. To keep myself warm, I folded my limbs across my chest, rocking on the balls of my feet. My eyes managed to follow Dodger’s sniffing silhouette in the darkness but as soon as he began the squat for a number two, I looked away.
By now, Chris had shut off the loud tv. Finally.
“I thought you said we would be hanging out for my Fall Break?” I questioned with my back facing him as I kept my eyes on the dog.
“What?”
“I thought you wanted to hang out with me for my break. Week-long, might I add.”
“We are.”
“No we’re not, Chris. And you know it.” I sighed as I moved to slide the door closed but ceased my movement to leave an opening for Dodger in case he finished early. With my hands on my hips, I rotated around to stare down Chris. “You’ve spent every single day downstairs taking care of business with A Starting Point and work, which I have no problem with. It’s what you do afterwards that bothers me. Barely talking to me or not at all and then you sit down here to do whatever. I was trying to be positive and give you your space but now—”
“But now your little feelings are hurt, right?” he snapped. “You’re hurt because I can’t devote 100% of my attention to you on your little break? News flash: everything isn’t about you, Y/N. So, stop your whining and actually think about what I’m going through.”
This would’ve shattered a younger version of myself. But after years of reflection, I realized I was always given the opportunity to fight back instead of wallowing in my tears.
First, I glanced to my left. Then to my right. No sign of life. I grimaced at my boyfriend. “You must not be talking to me.” I indicated with a point towards my chest. “You must be talking to this goddamn wall.” I sassed, jabbing my thumb to the wall behind me.
Suddenly, for the first time in the year Chris and I have been together, his eyes were size of saucers as it dawned on him what he’d done. And how I responded.
Tonight, was his first time taking his anger out on me. Yes, we’ve had our arguments, but those moments were different. This happened to be the time where the world was against Chris and rather than rely on me to comfort him (as I usually would), he was victimizing himself. He probably expected my body to rack with sobs at the harshness of his words, but I was through with that shit tonight.
“Since you wanna pull a Karen on me, your ass can sleep on the couch tonight.” I punished him. In that moment, I felt the softness brushing against my legs. Dodger was finally in. I pulled the door closed all the way this time and locked it. “Come on Dodger, your dad is being an asshat. You can sleep with me.”
Chris was frozen in his spot as the both of us moved past him. I made sure to give him a little bump on the way with my shoulder.
While waiting for Dodger to grasp his animal in his mouth, I observed him throw Chris a quick glance as if telling him that he fucked up. Funnily enough, our dog was the first to exit the scene and hold his head high as he trekked to the bedroom.
“I’m locking that fucking door tonight. Don’t even try it. You made your bed, now lay in it.” I dictated.
~*~
Surprisingly, I slept like a baby. Maybe it’s because I finally said something to Chris about his behavior lately. The previous nights, he would slumber away while I laid awake wondering if we would even spend time together before I headed back to work. Calling him out felt right.
I took care of my morning routine before unlocking the bedroom door and calling for Dodger to wake up. What I didn’t expect on the other side was the tray we roll out for sick days to be standing in front of the door.
Dodger was planning on being difficult as he hadn’t moved from his spot. This gave me ample time to study the tray with a covered meal placed on top and a horizontally folded card with my name scribbled on it.
“You were right last night. I have been distant throughout your break and I’m sorry for ruining the plans I promised. It’s a short amount of time left with you but we’re going to get started early. Eat the breakfast I made for you and then freshen up by putting on your favorite dress. Meet me at the car by 11.”
I chuckled at the message but decided to follow his set of instructions, nonetheless.
~*~
As promised, Chris drove us to the pumpkin patch further away from where we lived for more privacy and intimate time together. We spent the whole ride discussing last night’s events and catching up on the conversations we were meant to have throughout my week in our house. When he parked the car, he suggested we snap as many couple selfies but made sure to emphasize the idea of him taking pictures of me.
“They’re for my phone.” He lied through his teeth as I raised a brow at his idea.
The truth: Chris yearned to share pictures of me on his Instagram. At least half of his feed consisted of me, Dodger, or nature and rarely ever himself. I worried he would lose followers for never updating them on how he was doing but he dismissed my worries with a kiss to my forehead and a, “It’ll be fine, who cares?”
For a while, we explored the farm with our hands linked and eyes moving about at the pumpkins of all shapes and sizes. It wasn’t until we’d reach the halfway point did I realize we didn’t have an exact clue as to which type of pumpkin we were searching for.
“I was thinking one of those big, tall pumpkins.” Chris answered after I asked him what our goal was.
“The ones that look like an orange squash?”
“Yeah.”
“Why…?”
“I don’t know, I’ve always wanted one.” He shrugged. His face held a gentle look of content.
“Well, if a squash-lookin’ pumpkin is what my big baby wants, then a squash-lookin’ pumpkin is what he shall get.”
Chris released my hand to wrap it around my waist and pull me closer to him. I felt my cheeks heat up as he placed a kiss to the crown of my head. After all this time together, he still managed to have me acting like a schoolgirl that somehow caught the attention of her longtime crush.
“Thank you baby.” He answered. “I know I already said this twice; through the note and in the car. But, I’m truly sorry for how I acted last night and the days before that. I was stupid in bottling everything up and not confiding in you like I normally do. Doesn’t justify any of what I said last night but I figured you had a lot on your plate and didn’t want to bother you with my own.”
I paused my walking to glance up at him with what I hoped was love in my eyes. “Chris, you could never bother me. As a couple, we talk to each other. Even if we’ve got problems of our own at the same time? I want you to come to me and I come to you so we can figure things out.” I stood on my toes to press a kiss to the underside of his jaw due to his towering figure. “I love you and accept your apology.
“I love you too.”
“You better. Because my ass wouldn’t be helping you find that ugly pumpkin to make you happy.”
“Hey!” he pouted before I shut him up with a kiss.
Holiday
Summary: Grace and Frankie have a heart-to-heart after 7x03. | AO3 Link
—
Grace makes margaritas that night to celebrate Grankiekuh, the new holiday that she and Frankie just made up to celebrate the fact that Frankie doesn’t feel the need to make up holidays to avoid her anymore.
“You just squished our names together and threw the -kuh from Hanukkah at the end,” Grace accuses, chuckling.
Light.
Playful.
Simply exuberant.
Just an hour ago, she was guzzling martinis on the couch with her ex-husband trying to figure out the quickest way to apologize to Frankie for a twenty-year-old mistake.
And now they’re planning a fake holiday together, and everything is somehow right in a world that also features her current husband sleeping in a jail cell.
“You have to admit—it has a certain ring to it,” Frankie hums determinedly. “We could be the new Shefani, the octogenarian Bennifer!”
“Well, don’t expect me to passionately hold your ass on a speedboat anytime soon,” Grace teases as she carefully measures tequila in a cylinder and then pours a little more than the recommended amount just to be safe.
“Nah,” her partner winks conspiratorially. “Just my hand across a candlelit table will do.”
And so they light a scented candle on the dining room table and drink incredibly boozy margaritas and eventually eat Del Tacos takeout that arrives half-an-hour late because the DoorDash driver couldn’t find the beach house. And Frankie laughs about Grace tearing the poor delivery kid a new one. And Grace quietly admires that Frankie still gives the twerp a twenty dollar tip anyway.
“At least he’s got a stronger constitution than Bugs Bunny,” Frankie snorts as she closes the door on yet another shell shocked human being who has encountered the wrath of Grace Hanson.
“That isn’t an impressively tall bar to surmount,” Grace replies, wrapping a fond arm around Frankie’s shoulders.
They talk, they eat, and then they talk some more when all that’s left at the bottom of the brown paper bag are tortilla chip crumbs. They talk a little bit about everything, really—the surprisingly pleasant weather these past few days, Bud’s apparent penis problem, Robert being useless at the dishes, and how delicious Del Tacos is.
And between them, talking about everything is certainly not the same as talking about nothing.
Because even if they’re only talking about the weather or the dishes or the abysmal states of their children’s genitalia, it’s because they enjoy each other’s company enough to implicitly understand that it’s nice to just sit together at the end of a long, hard day and hear each other’s voices.
Because the little things are nice sometimes.
The day-to-day minutiae and routine of living with another person.
Sharing space with them.
Being present.
Being kind.
And in experiencing another’s unadulterated kindness, becoming whole.
When Grace gets salsa on the corner of her pink mouth, Frankie reaches over and thumbs it off with a kind of casual intimacy that was hard won between them, fought for and so lovingly, so painstakingly earned.
They love each other.
They’ve surpassed the point where they constantly have to say it aloud.
I love you, Frankie says when she takes extra care to clean the dishes just the way that Grace prefers—something Robert Hanson never quite learned after forty goddamn years of marriage.
And I love you, Grace replies when she unthinkingly puts Frankie’s phone on charge because she realizes it’s on four percent, and her friend can’t fall asleep until she’s listened to meditative whale noises on YouTube for an hour.
And I love you, Frankie doesn’t say when she extends her palm to Grace and tells her that they should stargaze tonight because “Saturn’s vibin’ in the sky.”
And I love you, Grace replies when she threads their fingers together so snugly that their rings clink and replies—without sarcasm, without judgment, without weight, “Sure.”
And I love you, they tell each other as they slowly stagger their way out onto the deck, Grace assuming the right cushion and Frankie taking the left, arm in arm until the very last moment when it makes more sense for them to let go, to find their own equilibrium as the sea breeze sweeps gentle fingers through their hair.
The sky is star-freckled tonight, blushing purple and inky blue.
In the natural silence that follows, however, the moon and the stars and the supposedly vibin’ planets don’t particularly captivate Grace’s attention for very long, so she finds herself staring at Frankie, who’s staring off into space, her tall features bathed in amber porch light.
Something has shifted in her expression in the few elapsed moments since they’ve been outside, her thin brow furrowed, a frown threatening to tug at her lips where there had once been an easy smile. Her slender hands are clasped below her chin in a gesture that Grace has come to associate with introspective thoughtfulness, tinged with a kind of subtle melancholy that Frankie has always maintained that she detests and tries to consciously avoid.
“Frankie… are you—?
“We only fought for two hours this time,” Frankie interrupts softly, nodding towards the outdoor dining table where the Hanson-Bergsteins had yet another disastrous brunch together. (At least no one broke a bone or got hit with a wiffle bat this time.) “Ha, that’s a new record if I’ve ever heard of one!"
But the joke doesn’t quite reach her eyes, and Grace’s heart sinks somewhere beneath her ribcage. It throbs in her uncomfortably full stomach. She had naively assumed that three margaritas in a piece, the two of them could just skip the part where they rehash the day’s events and openly reflect upon them—but she should have known.
These emotional reckonings are Frankie’s chosen form of healing.
She’s always processed better aloud.
“Fighting with you is the most uninspired pastime I can think of doing these days,” Grace tells her truthfully. “I’d rather resolve our conflicts in five minutes than five hours, so we can catch Jeopardy! together without sitting on the couch in passive aggressive silence… I think we’ve reached a point in our friendship where we can do that… yeah?”
The question comes out a little more vulnerably than she would have liked.
Open-ended and hesitant, it requests an equally honest answer.
And while she knows that Frankie has no qualms about being emotionally honest, Grace also innately understands that she has chronically shied away from honesty about all matters pertaining to herself.
(When she initially told Nick that she wanted to redefine their relationship, she couldn’t have even told herself what the hell she meant either. She supposes she wants to have her cake and eat it, too—to be in a relationship with Nick and go home to Frankie. But maybe that means she doesn’t really love Nick, that she’s just using him for the ample entertainment he provides: the romance, the easy companionship, the sex. And maybe, at the heart of that unsettling hypothesis, she’s just as much of a stone cold bitch as everyone around her seems to think. Her husband is in jail, and she doesn’t lose any sleep about it. In fact, in her queen-sized bed in the beach house she shares with Frankie, she’s slept better than she has in all the many elapsed and miserable weeks since she said, “I do.”)
“Of course!” Frankie exclaims, her brows arching in surprise. “You say tom-ay-to, I say tom-ah-to, and then we kiss and passionately makeup. That’s exactly where we are nowadays.”
“Then why do you still look like a kicked puppy?” Grace asks shrewdly, folding her arms across her chest. “Or like Sol after his supposedly well-trained dog shit in his Birkenstocks.”
“Does being marginally tipsy on tequila count as an acceptable answer?”
“Nope.”
“Fine then and damn,” Frankie sighs, waving a defeated hand around the empty air. “But don’t hold it to me if I’m not making sense, Grace. I’m thinking rabbit trails tonight. And not, like, rabbit trails of criminally-tampered-with poop, but circles and other weird thoughts that don’t seem to be heading anywhere.”
“Hey, I'm not going anywhere—I’ve got all the time in the world to listen,” Grace replies easily, and this is love, too, without ever uttering the word.
Twenty years ago, she did everything short of making up a holiday to not spend a single moment alone in a room with Frankie Bergstein.
And now, she's done everything short of divorcing her husband to ensure that they're never apart.
Frankie's eyes briefly widen in pleasant surprise at this seemingly unexpected gesture, her parenthetically enclosed mouth curving into a gentle smile—tender and sweet.
Lord, she’s beautiful, Grace thinks to herself as Frankie mulls on her next words.
She thinks this at least twice a day and chalks it up to passive jealousy that someone can look so radiant without ever really trying, by just simply being herself.
“Mm, okay... so I was just thinking about how my thing might actually be worse than yours… and you killed my son’s beloved rabbit,” Frankie says bluntly.
And so clearly!
Like she already fully believes it.
Grace blinks rapidly, not entirely computing what she just heard.
“How the hell did you come up with that conclusion?” She asks, nonplussed. “Like you said, I killed your kid’s rabbit and lied about it for some twenty-odd years. You and Sol just played an elaborate game of hooky.”
Frankie looks torn on whether to laugh or shake her head in clear exasperation of Grace not getting it.
“But the ethical jury in the sky isn’t in on me creating a religious holiday just to avoid you,” she protests with a half-smile. “Or even worse, admitting that’s the reason after all these years. I hurt you, Grace, and I don’t wanna hand wave that away just so we can watch Jeopardy! in peace. I want to check in with you and make sure you’re really okay.”
Even after many years of slowly but surely becoming acquainted with Frankie’s uncanny sensitivity to her emotions, somehow, it’s always still a pure shock when Grace is met with the unadulterated and unconditional extent anyway. She’s still unlearning Robert’s idea of emotional care, which largely involved having a stockpile of generic gifts to placate her various moods and whims.
And frankly, she’s not the most empathetic woman of the year herself.
I hurt you, Frankie said candidly and made no attempt to defend herself, to excuse her actions.
I hurt you, she declared, and it was an I love you at the exact same time.
Grace can hardly swallow, her throat a hundred emotions thick.
“Hey now,” she eventually rasps, “don’t go all revisionist on me now. I was so fucking mean to you. We don’t play wiffle ball anymore at waffle-and-wiffle brunches because I hit you with a bat.”
“You told me there was a bee in my hair,” Frankie rubs the back of her head wistfully.
“There totally was,” she grins painfully, “but the bat was a highly unnecessary measure.”
“Grace!” Frankie groans. “Don’t get me sidetracked. I’m trying to be real with you here—I wasn’t a saint by any stretch of the imagination! I could be shitty to you, too.”
But Grace firmly shakes her head at this, her mouth pressed into a thin line, her rebuttal already locked, loaded, and innately known to be true.
“Not as often as I was to you, and rarely did you instigate because I’d already started it,” she insists, venom in her voice, raw and undeniable self-loathing. “If I’d been you dealing with me… God, maybe I’d have needed to make up a holiday, too…”
And even as she says it, the uneasiness in her stomach suddenly solidifies into sharp clarity and even crueler pain as she realizes what’s really been bothering her these past few days—a burgeoning feeling that she’s every bit as “harsh” and “vindictive” as Robert told the FBI lady she could be, even though she’s sworn she’s changed, even though she's wanted to be better.
God knows she's tried to be.
Because of Frankie.
Or maybe even for her.
The two reasons are interchangeable in her mind.
“I… I wasn’t like you, Frankie,” she eventually continues, glancing away so she doesn’t have to face the other’s expression—fearing confirmation of all her awful feelings, monstrously craving pity she’s sure she doesn't deserves. “Hell, I’m still not like you. The fact that my ideal marriage includes my husband being in jail more or less proves that.”
Grace Hanson doesn’t tip confused delivery boys thirty-percent after botched deliveries.
She doesn’t make up fantastical stories about magically disappearing bunnies for her kids so they believe in themselves.
She rarely apologizes for her mistakes.
And she makes a hell of a lot of mistakes.
“Robert called me harsh and often vindictive,” she chuckles humorlessly. “Well, I guess he’s got my number almost better than anyone.”
The ensuing silence following this proclamation stretches long and thin, like a tightrope strung precariously taut, and Grace is about to cave in to the temptation of looking at Frankie again when all of a sudden—
“Bullshit!” Frankie exclaims ferociously. “That’s a whole lot of bullshit, Grace Hanson.”
“Frankie, don’t defend—“
But she quickly reaches over and tightly curls her palm over Grace’s spiny knuckles, demanding her attention and getting it.
In so many years and throughout the span of them, she has been the only one to ever truly earn it.
Grace turns her head and finds Frankie’s oceanic eyes inches away from her face, storm-like in their intensity, piercing all over.
“Robert doesn’t get to use the present tense with you because he doesn’t live with you anymore,” Frankie insists when she knows she has Grace, when Grace can no more look away than a rabbit can actually disappear in a hat. “He doesn’t get to see you the way I do. And let's be honest here, I'm not sure he ever really has."
“And how do you see me?” Grace can barely breathe, only dimly aware that this is yet another needy question, one that can only engender a frighteningly vulnerable response.
Her heartbeat quickens.
She feels the exact striation of Frankie’s finger that is resting on the quarter of a million dollar wedding ring Nick bought for her in Vegas.
In the semi-lit darkness, Frankie’s sharply hewn cheeks feather themselves sunset pink.
Grace blindly assumes it’s the humidity.
“As someone worth discovering,” she murmurs, “and by discovering, understanding that you’re a pretty darn amazing person to love beneath all those expertly erected walls.”
Frankie leans forward then and presses a chaste kiss on Grace’s head, quick and habitual, like she’s done it a hundred times before. Her floral perfume wreathes her like a warm embrace. Beneath the perfume, she smells like acrylic paint and sea breeze and strange but rich incense—complex and earthy and full of so many vibrant notes.
Heat rises to Grace’s face.
This must be the humidity, too.
“Some people don’t get that,” Frankie continues, moving back to her own cushion again, “and that’s their loss. They’ve never had to carve a pretty statue outta stone before, have never had to work on a relationship with you over time.”
“So what you’re saying is that it takes work to love me, huh?” Grace raises a teasing eyebrow, even though she's not exactly sure that this is the appropriate time and place to make a joke. But the alternative to lightly joking is to internalize the words that Frankie just said, to truly contemplate what it means that there's at least one person in this world who'll wait for her—despite her many walls and damn them.
“It takes work to ever love anybody, really,” Frankie shrugs easily.
It’s an unsurprisingly sage take—Frankie’s always been good at emotions and relationships and all of the other important and dauntingly human stuff—but it’s also one that gets Grace to thinking about Nick again, about his kindness and his persistence and about his dedication to wanting to make things to work.
She’s beginning to get an inkling of what it might mean that she doesn’t want to meet him halfway, kind and persistent and dedicated though the man might be.
That if she had to choose again between husband and home, there would be no contest.
There would be no hesitation.
So perhaps there are two people in the world who would wait for her, but of those two, Grace knows there's only one whom she would invite to stay.
“Happy Grankiekuh, Frankie,” Grace says, leaning her head against her best friend’s shoulder. “I like discovering you, too.”
“Well, you should! I’m a fucking delight.”
“Don’t push it.”
“Ha, never.”
But in the end, Frankie intertwines their hands together, and the silence of this action is its own unmistakable and resonant reply.
I love you.
Grace Hanson is loved.
So, chances are good that that's Mickey's money and weed Frank helps himself to, isn't it? Not sure if we've got any leads on anyone wearing that particular jacket (does it look like it's made of leather? Is it Ian's?) but let's face it: Mickey, like the Gallaghers, has exactly zero qualms about casually approrpriating someone else's clothes, so it can belong to anyone and still be his stuff in those pockets. And out of all the people in the house, he seems the most likely to carry around cash and pot nowadays, right?
Right.
So yeah, Frank has now robbed Mickey Milkovich, and while I can imagine Mickey just swearing up a blue streak and then letting it go because it's fucking Frank, right, what the hell can you do, I can also imagine him not taking at all kindly to this, and that's way more fun.
See, when Mickey first discovers the theft, I don't think he'll intially be too upset. He'll come ambling down the stairs to a bustling kitchen on a Sunday morning, yawning and jonesing for a joint, but alas! There's none to be found!
”The fuck's my weed?” he asks the room at large, and then, once he's put his hand down the other pocket, ”The fuck's my fucking money?” He glares at the Gallaghers gathered around the kitchen table: ”Any of you jokers went through my pockets? Gonna want that stuff back.” As I said, not too upset; it's family, it's whatever.
”Not me,” Debbie says.
”I'm ten!” Liam says (which Mickey doesn't actually think clears him as a suspect, but okay).
”C'mon, man, I'm a cop,” Carl says, and Mickey would ask him what the hell that's got to do with anything, but Ian interupts him, coming down the stairs and saying, ”It's probably Frank, I think I heard him yelling downstairs last night.”
And that's not whatever, because Frank ain't family, he's a fucking predatory worm, and if he think he can go through Mickey's stuff and take whatever, he's got another thing coming.
”He's a fucking dead man,” Mickey announces with great finality. ”Where is he?”
”Alibi opened about two minutes ago, so there probably,” Carl offers, then gives Mickey a meaningful look. ”You kill him, don't tell me about it.”
”Won't,” Mickey promises easily – as if he'd ever tell a fucking pig anything anyway – and grabs his (whoever's) jacket and heads out for a little terrify and retrieve.
He does find Frank at the Alibi, where he's already putting the stolen cash to good – bad – use by ordering a third shot of whiskey to go with his second beer. Mickey slams the door open, and he's got his full-on murder face on, grinning in horrible threat as he calls: ”Frank!”
And Frank looks up, startled, and he sees the jacket on Mickey and fuck.
”Oh shit,” he says, and he'd try to talk his way out of this – they're related now for God's sake, doesn't that count for anything?! – but he sees the look on Mickey's face and yeah, there'll be no talking if he lets Milkovich get hold of him, so he quickly downs the rest of his shot and rushes straight for the back door.
”It wasn't me! I swear to God, Mickey, it wasn't me!” he calls over his shoulder as he runs, and, ”It's just a loan! I'm going to pay you back!”
Now, Frank's got a few skills and running away is certainly one of them, so he actually manages to out-leg Mickey, turning corners and jumping fences until he's gained enough of a lead that he dares make it back to the Gallagher house. He storms through the door and finds – as he had hoped – Ian eating cereal on the couch.
”Your husband is trying to kill me!” Frank tells him indignantly. ”You have to call him off.” It's supposed to be a command but comes out mostly a pleading whine.
Normally, Ian's all about calling his husband off – or, more commonly, physically holding him back – before he does something violent and stupid, but this is Frank, so he doesn't even look up from his breakfast. ”Nah. Don't think so.”
And Frank groans because this is so unfair. How the hell was he supposed to know that stuff belonged to Mickey and not to one of his unloving and ungrateful but far less violent kids? This is Ian's goddamned fault, for marrying a fucking Milkovich... Typical Ian, always so inconsiderate, really takes after Clayton in that regard, and now he's going to stand by and do nothing while his man wife beats Frank to a pulp and leave him for dead in an alley?
He'd let Ian know exactly how unimpressed he is with his lack of proper respect and fidelity but for the second time that day a door slams open to reveal the deadly form of a homocidal Mickey Milkovich. Frank swallows his complaints and rushes towards and out the kitchen door.
”Hey,” Ian calls casually. ”So Frank's still alive, huh?”
”Slippery fucker,” Mickey tells him, flopping down next to him on the couch. He'll give up the chase for now; let Frank run himself ragged for fear of his vengeance while Mickey chills with his husband, that sounds about fucking right.
”Mm.” Ian pauses around a spoonful of Froot Loops, and gives Mickey a sideway glance. ”Just for the record, you're not actually going to kill him, right?”
Mickey raises an eyebrow. ”You'd have a problem with it if I did?”
”Told you, don't wanna be a prison widow.”
”Uh-huh.” He gets up and head for the fridge to fetch a couple of beers, calling over his shoulder as he goes, ”Didnt murder him when I thought he'd blab about us to my dad, not gonna off him over some fucking weed and a couple of twenties.” Returning to the couch and handing one of the bottles to Ian (who accepts it because yeah, it's only noon, but it is Sunday), Mickey adds. ” Asshole's not fucking stealing from me again, though. Gonna let him stew for a bit, then find him and have a few words, real friendly like.”
Ian hums noncommittally. Frank's been stealing everything he can lay his hands on for as long as Ian can remember, so he doubts he'll stop now – but then again, Mickey can be very persuasive and very scary when he wants to be, so who knows?
They drink in companionable silenece, enjoying the rare moment of quiet in the Gallagher household.
”Don't know how I feel about you chasing after another Gallagher with every intention of beating the crap out of them,” Ian notes suddenly, throwing a small grin Mickey's way. ”Thought that was our thing.”
Mickey grins right back at him, cocky and flirty and amused. ”Yeah? Want me running after you, Usain Bolt?”
”Wouldn't mind.” And Ian jumps up from the couch, snatching Mickey's beer out of his hand as he goes. He runs for the stairs, laughing at his husband's outraged protests, followed by the sound of feet in furious pursuit, because quiet moments on the couch are all very good and well but there's other fun to be had too, when you have the whole house to yourself and you're young and happy and stupidly in love with a man who’s rough and tough in all the right ways but still draws the line at murder.
62. you set off the fire alarm and I have a test tomorrow, and I might strangle you
Sternclay, sfw, please!
Why do fire alarms only go off in March? The one time Stern set one off (he fell asleep studying and the dinner he was reheating started smoking) it was in that endless stretch of time where the snow is no longer festive but will keep falling for at least two more months.
More importantly, who is responsible for interrupting his carefully planned out six hours of sleep before his midterm at eight this morning?
He stands in the freezing cold with the building’s other three occupants; the single man who looks like he stars in lumberjack porn and the girlfriends who live on the ground floor.
“Sorry” The other man mumbles, “I was making doughnuts and the oil I was using got too hot without me noticing.”
Stern runs a hand through his hair and keeps his voice low, “Why were you cooking with hot oil at three in the morning?”
“When I can’t sleep, I bake.”
“Can I suggest a less flammable hobby in the future?”
“Hey man, it was an accident. And it’s not my fault they stuck the fire alarm too high up for me to get to it before it called the fire department.”
“Too high? You’re taller than I am and I can reach mine.”
“My ceilings are higher and it was tucked between the cabinets and the roof.”
“Oh yeah, ours is in a super-weird place too.” Aubrey, one of the ground-floor neighbors, pats the offenders arm, “it’s okay Barclay, it’s just a little smoke.”
“That may be the case for you three, but I have an exam that’s worth thirty percent of my grade in six hours and I need my goddamn sleep.”
“Yeesh, man, chill out. They’re already waving us back in.” Aubrey points to the door of the three story house.
“I timed everything to optimize my sleep schedule so it actually is a big deal.”
Barclay glowers at him, “Look, I said sorry. But maybe get used to the fact the world doesn’t run on your schedule, mr. control freak, and fucking get over it.”
Stern keeps a smile flat as he bites out, “go to hell” and heads upstairs to salvage what’s left of his schedule.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The crash from downstairs comes at nine p.m; he has a huge day at his internship tomorrow, but Stern doesn’t hear any sounds after it, and he is not about to let a neighbor die on his watch.
“Barclay? Are you okay?” He puts his ear to the door, the heater drowning out all ambient noise.
“Nope, not really, agh, fuck, the doors locked, lemme try to stand-”
“Stay put.” He runs upstairs, grabs his wallet, and uses his debit card to trick the lock, “Shit, what happened?”
Barclay is clutching his forehead, blood between his fingers, and his ankle is swelling. “I got really dizzy, caught my foot on the couch and then my forehead on the table on the way down. Ow, fuck, it better not be broken” he growls as Stern kneels to look at his foot, “I’ve got a shift in six hours.”
“I can’t tell. You should get to a hospital; if it’s injured and you try to work on it, you might have an even worse fall.”
“Fuck, I’m not even sure I can afford the ambulance, let alone the fucking E.R.”
He knows Dani and Aubrey are out, “Any family in town, or a boyfriend?”
“No, if there I woulda called them.” He snaps, then tries for a slow inhale, “sorry, it just, it hurts-”
“I can take you in my car, that’ll be one less worry.” Stern helps Barclay up, gets him to his sedan, then tells him to hold tight while he gets something for his head. He ends up grabbing the first clean fabris he finds, which is how Barclay ends up in the E.R while holding a “Roswell, NM” tank-top to his forehead.
“Sorry to ruin your, uh, souvenir?” He mumbles as they wait for the doctor.
“It’s for a good cause. Besides, I know how to get bloodstains out of fabric.”
“That...that makes you sound like a serial killer.”
“If I were a serial killer I would wear things that could stain.” Stern winces, “sorry, I read too many true crime books.”
“I just don’t have the stomach for them. I like fictional mysteries but real ones?” he shivers, “makes me think an axe murderer is gonna break into my place. I mean, you did it with a credit card.”
“If you’d had the chain thrown it might have been another story. “
“I’ll keep that in mind.” Barclay shifts in the plastic seat, “you, uh, you don’t have to hang around. Know you got a rigid schedule.”
Joseph runs a hand through his hair, “I’m sorry for being so annoyed last week when you set off the alarm. I’m not always great at handling changes.”
“To be fair, doughnuts probably weren’t the best stress baking choice.”
“Did they turn out?”
“Nah. I’ll have to try ‘em another time. Did, uh, did your test go okay?”
“Yes. I, um, I got a perfect score.”
Barclay laughs, the sound like warm honey, and Stern blushes at looking so deeply nerdy in front of someone with a smile like that.
“Mr. Cobb? We’re ready to see you.”
The bearded man gives an slightly awkward wave as he follows the nurse through the double doors. Stern returns the gesture, pulls up the chess app on his phone, and settles in to wait until his neighbor is done.
-------------------------------------
Barclay comes out his nap the scrchh of a brush on tile. His first thought is that he’s so late for work he’s unavoidably fucked. His second one is who the fuck is in his bathroom?
His ankle twinges, jogging his memory; he got back from the hospital at 11:30, no stitches needed on his head but bedrest required for his ankle. He’d been contemplating how to convince his manager to let him shift from the warehouse to somewhere he could sit. Joseph raised an eyebrow and asked for his phone while telling him to go get into bed. All Barclay overheard was a polite, steely voice mentioning the labor laws in Dane County and how it’d be a shame if someone were to arrange an OSHA spot check. The last thing he recalls before falling asleep was Joseph telling him he had the next day off.
That doesn’t explain the cleaning sounds, though.
“Oh, you’re up.” Joseph pokes his head in from the hall. His hair is coming loose from his usual slicked-down style and he’s in a V-neck and sweatpants instead of the suit Barclay sees him in most days, “I hope I didn’t wake you; since you gave me the spare key I thought I’d check on you when I got back from my internship and leave you some take-out from the Thai place around the corner--you said the green curry was your favorite--but then I thought I should wait until you got up to see if you needed anything, so I, um, I cleaned your tub while I waited for you to wake up.”
Barclay isn’t sure what part of that is the most baffling. Or the most touching.
“Why the tub?” He eases his legs over so he’s sitting on the edge of the bed.
“It’s satisfying. And I, um, I clean when I’m stressed.” He wipes his hands on the rag in his front pocket, “I was worried about you, and my internship was murder today. They’re mounting a case against one of the biggest employers in the state and everyone’s on edge.”
“Heh, kinda makes me glad I work at WalMart.” Barclay takes the crutch Joseph offers him and hobbles into the kitchen, “oh, uh, if you want to try some cake, there’s leftover cinnamon spice cake in the fridge.”
“I think I will, thank you.” He bends into the fridge and wow has his ass always been that nice, “can I grab you a drink from in here?”
“One of those pre-bottled Kahlua things in the door; have ‘em for a friend but one sounds good right now.” He watches Joseph open it for him, setting it down before he pulls out Barclay’s chair for him. Normally, the kind of fussing and light ordering around Joseph has directed at him makes him bristle. This last day, it just made him feel safe and cared about.
He could get used to this.
----------------------
“Good lord, we’ve even got a flood warning.” Joseph sets down his phone as rain attempts to pummel the house to dust, “Some days I wish we lived closer to one of the lakes but this is not one of them. Should we check to see if Dani and Aubrey need any emergency supplies for if we have to shelter here? I always keep more than I need.”
“Nah, Dani’s got a strong self-sufficiency streak; got her a bucket emergency kit for Christmas last year.” Barclay pops the cork on the Pinot Grigio they got for dinner, “and I don’t think they forgot your semi-drunk promise that if they ever had to run from a flood they had full permission to break open your front door to be safe on the third floor.”
“I meant it, drunk or no.” Joseph takes down the plates and portions out the carbonara; he’s been trying to cook when he has time, both because he likes it and because it gives him and Barclay something to talk about. Not that they need the help.
Things changed after the trip to the E.R; Barclay would bring Joseph fresh cookies or pie. Joseph would offer Barclay rides when their schedules overlapped. Barclay introduced him to his favorite trivia night spot. Joseph took some of his cookies to a worker-owned bakery where a former co-student worked, which led to Barclay getting a new job.
Now they see each other almost every day, whether that’s watching movies on Barclay’s cramped couch or joining Dani and Aubrey for board game night.
He’s pleased with how the pasta turned out, even more so with the fact that when their legs bump together beneath the table, Barclay doesn’t pull away.
They’re on the couch, chatting about the recurring themes in ghost movies, when the storm starts in earnest. The sky is so dark it may as well be nine at night, the lighting and thunder performing a cacophonous two-man show across it. The closer the thunder gets, the more Barclay tenses.
“Everything okay?”
“Yeah” a thunderclap makes him jump, “I know it’s silly but I fucking hate thunderstorms, I have since I was a kid.” He chuckles, “my mom would always end up making a pillow fort for me to hide in.”
“We could do that now.” He offers, tapping his foot against Barclay’s own.
“Know this might be hard to believe, but I wasn’t always six-two.” The other man teases.
“Don’t count me out just yet. Wait here.”
It takes some precarity and most of his thumb-tacks, but soon he’s waving Barclay to come join him.
“Holy shit” Barclay laughs as he sees the bed and part of the floor in Joseph’s tiny bedroom are curtained in blankets, “do you ever half-ass stuff?”
“No one can ever prove I haven’t.”
“Uh huh.” Barclay climbs into the fort, “that’s Joseph speak for ‘no.’”
Joseph plugs in his UFO lights and follows him in, “I’ve failed plenty of times.”
“Not on this. Man, this is gr-” A thunderclap makes him jump, nearly knocking one blanket down, “uh, maybe if I…” He lays on the bed, Joseph deciding it’s the least awkward option to join him in that position.
“You really didn’t have to do this.” The green of the lights add a charming tint to Barclay’s eyes.
“I wanted to.”
His friend looks away, keeps his gaze on his feet as he murmurs, “How come you’re always so nice to me?”
“Because we’re friends.”
“It’s, uh, it’s not because you want something from me?”
“Of course not. Barclay,” he touches the cooks arm, “anything you’re thinking is a favor with an ulterior motive....well, it isn’t. It’s something I did to look out for you.”
“What if I, uh, I didn’t think it was favor hunting and was, uh, a different word that started with “F’?”
This time, when the thunder sounds, Barclay nestles closer to him.
“Oh, Barclay” he drapes a protective arm over his waists, “I didn’t mean it to be. At least, most of the time. There were, um, sometimes when I was more flirtatious than I’d have been if it were anybody else.”
“Do you...want to flirt more?” Barclay mumbles into his shoulder.
Joseph tips Barclay’s chin with his hand, brings their lips together as lightning flashes through the window. When he pulls back, Barclay’s eyes are wide. He kisses him once more just to see if he can make them entirely pupil, then whispers, “I hope we can do more than just flirt.”
“Joseph” strong arms slip below and across him, “fuck, babe, if it’s not flooded tomorrow, promise you’ll let me take you out tomorrow?”
“I’d like nothing better, big guy. In the meantime..” he rolls so Barclay is atop him, “I have some thoughts on how to keep your mind off the storm.”
What The Hell, Gyllenhaal, You Could’ve Just Told Me!
Pairing: Jake Gyllenhaal x F!Reader
Requested: Nope
Warnings: None
Genre: Floof
Summary: Y/N is Jake's assistant and he has an interview with Another Man.
Author's Note: I've had enough of not posting so you're getting this. I wrote it a long time ago, I think a few weeks after his actual interview with Another Man. Anyway, I'm posting it now so enjoy!
---
Jake POV:
"Y/N! Where are you?" I groaned as she finally picked up my call. "Outside, open the door!" I got up from the couch and opened the main door to see Y/N rushing towards me. I blinked, she looked so beautiful. Then again, she always did. I ended the call and kept my phone away. "Thank God, where were you?" I asked her as she stood outside, panting. "I'm sorry, my alarm didn't go off, my phone's battery died. I woke up late and then… well, now that I'm here, we should probably leave."
I nodded, grabbing the keys to my car and house. We left the house and got into my car. Y/N, if you didn't know, was my assistant. And she was the prettiest girl I had ever laid my eyes on. "Where to, first?" I asked her. She took out her phone. "Interview for Another Man. Then the photoshoot," she told me. I sighed and she looked at me. "Everything cool?" she asked softly. "Yeah, I'm bored already." She laughed, which made me smile.
"Come on, man! You were so excited about this, I know you. It's something else." I chuckled, shaking my head. "It's nothing, I swear." She stared at me suspiciously for a few seconds and then gave up. "Whatever." There was silence in the car as Y/N opened Instagram on her phone. "Should I put on some songs? We've got at least another half an hour in the car," I said and she shrugged. "Sure! Songs would be nice." I grinned and turned the radio on.
Y/N raised her phone and I glanced at her. Oh, she loved taking photos. I followed her on Instagram, it was the best thing ever. She posted videos of her dancing and singing. As planned, half an hour later, we reached the office of Another Man. I parked the car and the two of us got out. We walked towards the entrance.
"Oh my God, Y/N?!" At the high-pitched squeal, both of us turned around. Two women walked up to us. "Hi," Y/N waved. "We're big fans! We love your Instagram, you have a beautiful voice!" Y/N exchanged hugs with both of them. I stood to the side, smiling. "Holy shit, Jake Gyllenhaal!" one of them squealed, looking at me. "Hello." I shook hands with the two ladies. "Can we get a quick photo, please?" Their names were Rebecca and Julie.
Julie raised her phone to take a selfie. Y/N draped an arm around my shoulders. My arm went around her waist and we smiled at the camera. After that, they went away. "You're more famous now," I teased Y/N as we resumed our walk towards the building. "Shut up," Y/N muttered with a smile on her face, giving me a slight push.
I laughed, shoving my hands in the pocket of my jeans. "Really though, I agree with them. You do have a beautiful voice," I said as we walked into the building. I saw the interviewer and his crew waiting for us.
"Aw, thanks Jakey-poo," Y/N smirked and I rolled my eyes. "Don't call me that," I told her and she shrugged. "Okie, Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal," she grinned. "Jake is fine," I sighed, waving at her as I walked towards the interviewer. He led me to another room and I glanced back at Y/N. She sat in the lobby on a couch, keeping her backpack on her lap.
The interviewer and I sat down. "Hi, I'm Alex," he said, holding his hand out. "Hi," I smiled, shaking his hand.
"One question before the cameras roll- Who's the girl outside?" he asked. "Oh, that's my assistant, Y/N Y/L/N. Very sweet gal. She's more famous than I am, apparently," I laughed. "Really? How's that?" Alex asked, amazed. "We met two fans outside, like, 15 minutes ago. They recognized her first," I snorted. Alex laughed, too. The cameras rolled and we began with the interview.
---
"Thank you for talking to us, Jake! It's truly been amazing." Alex and I stood up, shaking hands. "Thank you for having me! Do we do the photoshoot now?" I asked him. "Yeah. We have a few sets designed and a few venues as well, assuming you'll be comfortable shooting at different places?" I scoffed, waving my hand. "Of course, I'm cool." Alex then introduced me to Jessie, who was the photographer. "How about I meet you at the bridge?" she offered.
"Sure, no problem."
She gave me the address and left. I walked out of the room and looked around for Y/N. She wasn't where she was supposed to be. Her stuff was there, where was she? "Boo!" Startled, I turned to look to my right. Y/N was grinning at me, wiping her hands with tissues. "Goddamn it," I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. "Ha, gotcha. I was in the bathroom, silly," she snorted, walking towards her backpack. She kept her phone away and swung the backpack over her shoulders.
"Where to, Captain?" she asked, tipping an imaginary cap. I told her the address as we walked out of the building. "You know, I met 3 people while you were giving an interview. I guess I am famous," she mumbled. "That is awesome, Y/N," I smiled, getting into the car. Y/N sat next to me and opened her backpack. "Yo, drink water."
She handed me a bottle of water before I could start the car. "I'm not thirsty." She stared at me with a raised eyebrow until I drank some water.
I could never deny her, could I? I had a huge crush on her and it was common knowledge that people would do anything for their crush. I handed the bottle back and started the car. The bridge where we were supposed to go was nearly an hour away. "Ah, here it is. I waited for this for so long now, it's here. I'm impressed." What was she talking about? "What?" I asked her.
"News about us dating!" I nearly swerved the car. "The news about us WHAT?!" I asked her loudly.
"Calm down, you big baby. Apparently when we met Rebecca and Julie there were paps around and they took a lot of photos. You know them, always printing the wrong news," she rolled her eyes. "Well then, Miss Famous, post it on your Instagram, tell them we're not dating," I grumbled. I did want to date her, though.
"Ah, good idea." She opened Instagram and I could hear her long nails clicking against the phone as she furiously typed something out. "Done," she said a minute later.
"What did you write?"
"I had been waiting for news like this. LMAO, I'm not dating @jakegyllenhaal I'm his babysitter," Y/N chuckled. "You wrote that?!" I yelled. Y/N burst out laughing. "Kidding, I wrote assistant, don't worry," she wheezed. I sighed in relief. A few minutes passed by in silence.
All of a sudden, Y/N's stomach started growling. "Shit, sorry," she whispered, blushing furiously. She clutched her stomach. "Hungry?" I chuckled. "Yeah," she sighed. "Wanna stop by, get some food?" She quickly shook her head. "No, we'll be late, then." I frowned.
"It doesn't matter, you do. Come on, tell me where you want to eat," I said and she continued shaking her head. "It's alright. After the shoot we'll catch a snack, for sure," she insisted. I gave up. "Do you at least have snacks in that bag?" "Sure," she mumbled, taking out a toffee. She peeled off the wrapper and ate it. "Did you eat breakfast?" I questioned. "Nah, I was late, remember? Didn't bother," she shrugged.
"Not done, you gotta eat," I rolled my eyes. "Whatever, dad."
We reached the venue and I parked my car at the start of the bridge. The bridge was isolated for the shoot. "Aren't you getting down?" I asked Y/N when she didn't move. "I'm fine," she muttered, looking away. What happened with the sudden mood change? "Okay," I said slowly and closed the door after getting out. I kept the AC running for Y/N. Jessie was on the bridge, waiting. "Oh, hey, Jake! Ready?" I gave her a small smile. "Sure." She walked away and I leaned against the railing, sighing.
"Everything alright?" I heard and turned to look at the guy working on the lights. "Yeah, I'm fine," I told him and he nodded. "Alright, huge smile!" Jessie called out from a few feet away, holding the camera up. I managed a smile. Jessie was about to click the photo when she frowned. "Come on, man, not genuine. What's up?" Ignoring her question, I gave a broader smile. She simply lowered the camera, staring at me with a raised eyebrow.
"We need authentic smiles, Jake. Do you want to shoot a little later when your mood is better?" Jessie asked softly, walking towards me. "Please! How about 2 hours later?" I sighed, relieved. "It's Y/N, isn't it?" I stared at her, shocked.
She only gave me a knowing smile. "I'm just like you, Jake. When my girlfriend is unhappy, my mood changes as well. Go make her feel better, then return when you're done," Jessie chuckled, patting my arm. I nodded and started walking away. I didn't even have the heart to correct her about the whole 'girlfriend' thing.
"Also, what happened? Did you two get in a fight?" I turned around to face Jessie. "No, I… I found out Y/N did not eat breakfast and she was really hungry… but she refused to eat because I would be late to this shoot. She doesn't care a lot about herself because of me. I feel… guilty," I explained in a tired voice, rubbing the back of my neck. "Well then, I would definitely suggest feeding her first if it would make you feel better," she laughed. I gave her a small smile and walked towards my car.
When I reached, my eyes widened. "Y/N, what the fuck, what happened? Why are you crying?" I hastily opened the door and sat in the driver's seat. She sniffled and wiped her tears. "I'm fine, it's just… whenever I'm super hungry I get all moody and sad because my stomach hurts and- Wait, are you done with the shoot already?" she questioned, confused. "No, we postponed it, we're up 2 hours later." I started the car. "What- Where are we going, Jake?" she asked as I drove to the nearest fast food restaurant.
"We gotta put some food in that belly."
Y/N chuckled and I felt a hand on my thigh. "Thank you," she whispered, laying her head on my shoulder. "It's okay." We fell silent. "Did you postpone the shoot because of me?" Y/N asked quietly a few minutes later. "Yeah. I felt bad that you didn't eat for a long time and I couldn't smile for the photos. Jessie figured out it had something to do with you. She suggested we postpone, actually," I told her truthfully. "You're too sweet."
Y/N pressed a kiss to my cheek and I smiled. We arrived at a McDonald's drive thru. We collected our orders and I drove back to the bridge. I parked the car in the same spot as before and turned to Y/N.
"After you, milady," I smiled, gesturing towards the food. She took off the covering and bit into the burger. "Thank you so much, Jake, you're the best boss one could ask for," she squealed and I chuckled. I took out my phone to quickly check my Instagram while Y/N ate. I wasn't hungry, I didn't order anything for myself. When I heard a giggle, I looked up.
Y/N had sauce all over her lips, pretending it was her lipstick. I opened the camera app and discretely clicked a photo because she looked too cute. With a smile, I returned to Instagram. "Wanna share?" Y/N questioned and I looked back at her. She was holding up the pack of fries.
"Nah, I'm cool. You're the one who should be eating!" I told her. "Come on, man! You bought me two goddamn Big Macs and I was barely able to finish them! Eat this with me!" She shook the pack of fries in front of my face. I sighed and picked out one. We shared the pack of fries.
Y/N was in a much better mood after eating. We had half an hour to kill after eating before we were back on schedule. "So… Y/N, tell me something about yourself." She narrowed her eyes at me. "What?" she deadpanned. "Come on, we've got nothing to do. Talk to me," I whined. "Well… what should I tell you?" she shrugged. "Your favourite things," I smiled.
"The colour red, red roses, winter… the song Happy Now by Zedd…" she said, counting on her fingers.
"That's nice, but I've never heard of the song," I shrugged. "Oh, no? The one that goes you're a world away, somewhere in the crowd, in a foreign place, are you happy now? There's nothing left to say, so I shut my mouth; won't you tell me, babe, are you happy now?" A smile bloomed on my face as Y/N sang. "Sing it for me," I blurted out and she looked at me.
"Okay, let me put on the karaoke." Both of us took out our phones. I opened Camera and kept the video recorder ready.
"Are you recording?" Y/N sighed, putting on the karaoke. "No, I'm on Instagram." Y/N believed my lie and started singing. She sang the first verse and the chorus. After she was done, I ended the video. "That was awesome! People are right, you do have an awesome voice," I told her with a grin. "Great! Your mood has improved, Jake, go for the shoot," Y/N said with a smile. "Only if you come along." Both of us got out of the car.
Jessie was talking to someone but turned as soon as she saw us. "Oh, hey guys! I hope you're fine now," Jessie snorted, looking at me. "I'm fine, honestly," I laughed. "Great! Let's get to work!" The photoshoot was a huge success. I had broad smiles throughout because everytime Jessie clicked a photo, my eyes were on Y/N.
---
"Ya know, Jake, you shouldn't cut your hair."
Y/N and I were back at my place. "What? Why?" I asked, running a hand through my hair. "I think it's a good look on you. I like men with long hair, so when you're like, cuddling, you get to play with their hair," Y/N smiled, not looking up from her phone. I stared at her, a smile on my face. A few seconds later, Y/N looked up, wide eyed, cheeks as red as a tomato.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't- I-" I chuckled and got up from my place on the couch. I sat down on the floor in front of her.
"Jake, what are you doing?" Y/N whispered as I took her hand. "Do whatever you want," I told her, placing her hand on top of my head. I heard a small chuckle and felt her hand combing through my hair, massaging my scalp. "Your hair is so soft," Y/N mumbled.
"Thanks," I chuckled, closing my eyes. This was so soothing; I leaned back, laying my head on her lap. I took my phone in my hand and put on some songs. A song, specifically. All Your Days by Shallou and Emmitt Fenn.
Y/N started singing along. I smiled, I could never get tired listening to her, her voice was absolutely angelic. "Hey, Y/N?" She made a humming noise. "Wanna get coffee later?" I heard her laughing and looked at her. She was grinning at me. "Are you asking me out?" she teased. "Yeah, actually," I whispered, eagerly awaiting her response.
She leaned over and wrapped her arms around my shoulders in a tight hug. "Of course." I smiled, hugging back.
"So, like… have you liked me for a while now?" Y/N questioned a while later. I was sitting next to her now and she was snuggled into my side. "You agreed to be my assistant around 5 years ago, right? I've liked you for the past 3," I answered truthfully and she sat up. She looked at me, an eyebrow raised. "You've lived with your feelings for 3 years now?" she asked loudly.
"The most difficult three years of my life," I joked. "What the hell, Gyllenhaal, you could've just told me," she laughed.
"You've liked me, too?" My jaw dropped. She nodded and I pulled her back in my arms. "If only we were bold enough," I laughed. She opened Camera on her phone. "I'm taking a selfie, join me." She smiled at the camera. That smile turned into a grin when I kissed her cheek. I watched as she opened Instagram, put a long caption and posted the picture.
Alright, paps, you win this one. It wasn't one-sided; turns out, he's interested in me, too. Guess who's going on a date this evening with @jakegyllenhaal?
I laughed when I read the caption. "You're a pro at coming up with Instagram captions," I told her. "You learn from the best," she winked. "Aw, thanks!" I said, touched. "What, no, I was talking about Ryan Reynolds." Y/N burst out laughing as I shoved her, frowning. "I'm kidding, stupid," she laughed, falling back against my chest.
Day 6: Carpet- Santiago ‘Pope’ Garcia
Day 6: Carpet - Santiago ‘Pope’ Garcia
Prequel now available: The Test Results
November Writing Challenge
Day 5: Holy - Llewyn Davis
Monday
“So I’ve been thinking querida, how do you feel about putting carpet on the floor of the nursery? I just don’t want the baby to fall and get hurt because of the hardwood.”
You blinked staring at your husband, “Santi, baby are you serious? You want to put down carpet in the nursery so if they fall it might not hurt as bad? Baby the whole house is hardwood…”
“Yeah I know, but they will probably be spending a lot of time in there and I was just thinking it might be a good idea. I already talked to the guys about it and they said they would help.” Santi grins at you.
“Wait...you are going to have your buddies from Delta Force come to our house and put down carpet in the nursery? You don’t even want to hire someone to install it? Baby that’s insane!” you shout at him before pushing yourself out of the kitchen chair to walk to the kitchen.
The second you stand, Santiago rushes out of his own seat to hold you. “Querida you need to take it easy you-”
“I swear to god Garcia, women have been having babies for centuries. I am not going to get injured walking from the table to the kitchen. Santi you need to calm down, you have turned the whole damn house into a baby proof fortress, nothing is going to happen to me or our daughter, ok?” you press your hands against his chest before waddling the rest of the way to the kitchen.
Santiago takes a deep breath before following you into the kitchen, “Ok, how about we make a compromise? I will lay off on being an overprotective papa bear and you will let me and the guys put carpet in the nursery.”
You laugh out loud, visualizing your husband as a bear defending the house before you turn to face him again, “Ok...deal you and the guys can put carpet in the nursery.”
Santi puts his fist in the air and grabs you into his arms, kissing you passionately. Your daughter begins kicking wildly, and Santi laughs before leaning down and rubbing your swollen belly, “you hear that mija, your papa is going to make your room safe for you,” he whispers before placing a kiss on your belly. He stands back up before kissing you again briefly, “I’m gonna go call Frankie and the guys, this weekend baby the nursery will have carpet!”
You shake your head watching him go off. Good lord what did you just agree too.
Thursday
You're sitting on the couch, elevating your feet, watching TV when your phone beeps signifying a text message. Santi and Frankie had gone to the store to pick out the carpet and order the supplies for Saturday. You open the phone and snort when you see a picture of a very annoyed Frankie Morales holding up two basically identical colors of cream carpet.
Which one do you like better? - Hubby
You are tempted to reply and let him know they look exactly alike but you know better.
The one on the left. - Wifey
Hmmm…. But that one isn’t as soft. - Hubby
You roll your eyes, how the hell would you know that. You type back a reply.
The one on the right then. - Wifey
Hmmmm...but it’s quite a bit darker than the other one. -Hubby
The look on Frankie’s face is beginning to make sense.
Pick which one you like then Santi. -Wifey
…. Ok let’s go with the one on the left….no right….ugh fuck I don’t know this is hard querida, and Frankie just keeps telling me to pick. - Hubby
You send a quick text off to Frankie.
Tell him to pick the one on the left. - Besties Wifey
Querida, Frankie’s telling me to get the one on the left and you know he has no sense of style so I am going to pick the one on the right. Is that ok with you?- Hubby
You shake your head laughing at your husband.
Sounds great! :) - Wifey
Saturday
“Okay get together, I need all of you in the picture!” Benny’s girlfriend Mya is shouting at the guys. They’re all smiling wearing knee pads, jeans, and an assortment of colored flannel.
You giggle to yourself watching them pose in their work gear. “Santi, baby do you really think this is the best idea, your knees…” you trail off watching the smile slip from his face.
“Querida...I need to be able to protect our little girl, my knees will be fine. Plus with the four of us it should only take a few hours,” he kisses your head before slapping his hands together guiding the guys to the bedroom.
It did not take them only a couple hours, four hours in and you and the other wives/girlfriends were lounging by the pool outside. Drinking lemonade and gossiping, when Mya came back out laughing outright holding a white box in her hand.
“This is the greatest thing I have ever listened to!” she shouts holding the white box out to you.
“Oh my god, is that….is that a baby monitor?” Madison, Will’s wife gathers closer to your side and you flip the switch on.
“Why do you already have a baby monitor?” Ella, Frankie’s wife asks.
“Santi wanted to be prepared for the baby, so he set it up weeks ago,” you tell them, twisting the knobs to turn up the sound.
From the device comes the voice of your husband panting, “fuck...why is this so goddamn difficult?! This should be easy, I told her this was going to be easy.”
“Pope, man maybe it’s time to call in a professional. I mean we’ve been working for four hours and have barely made any progress,” Will tells him.
“Fuck no man, I told my wife we could do this and we are going to do it!” Santi shouts back.
“Hermano, I’m not trying to sound defeatist but we literally have no idea what we're doing,” Frankie tries to comfort his best friend, “I mean we could shoot our way into the most dangerous places in the world but I know absolutely nothing about carpet.”
“We are not giving up! Santi needs us!!...plus I bet Mya $100 we could get it done and you know how much shit she’s gonna give me if I lose,” Benny whines.
Mya snorts into her lemonade, making the rest of you burst out laughing. “Maybe we should just take pity on them, and call in a professional,” you ask looking at the other women.
“I can’t believe Will agreed to this, he is hopeless with anything related to fixing or maintenance. We have to call in a professional for everything!” Madison laughs.
You all listen for a few more minutes, laughing as the guys argue before the painful grunt of your husband makes you get up. “That’s it I am ending this shit show,” you waddle into the house and go to the nursery ushering everyone out except Santi who sits on the floor on his butt looking up at you with an adorable pout.
You walk over to him and look down at him, you bend your knees and half fall/half sit down on the ground next to him. Santi immediately looks alarmed before you raise your hand silencing him. “Baby, I know you really wanted to do this yourself but I think it’s time we call it quits and call in a professional.”
Santi sighs loudly, “Querida, I wanted to be able to do this for you and the baby. I need her to be safe, and I really wanted to do it myself.”
“Santiago Garcia, you look at me right now. We are safe with you, we don’t need high tech security cameras, carpeted floors, locks on every cabinet. You didn’t fail baby, sometimes it’s ok to need help.”
“I love you querida,” he pulls you into his side placing a kiss on your cheek and rubbing your belly, “I love both of you.”
“We love you too, now help me off this floor my butt is beginning to go numb,” you reach out to your husband who gives you a blank look.
“I can’t get up right now querida, my knees...I think I need some ice and my pain killers.”
You blink several times, “....you mean we are stuck here?”
You both burst out laughing until you’ve got tears in your eyes. You gulp for air before looking at your husband again, “Don’t worry I got this,” he looks at you slightly confused before you take a deep breath shouting, “BENNY!! WILL!! FRANKIE!! HELP ME!!!”
It sounds like bulls charging through your house when the door suddenly flies open. The look on their faces will be burned in your memory forever, panic and determination. You start laughing all over again, and when Frankie steps forward and asks what’s wrong you almost can’t get the words out, “We- we’re stu-stuck! We- we can’t ge-get up!”
You and Santiago begin cracking up again like a couple of lunatics before the others join in, eventually helping you and Santi off the floor. Frankie holds your arm and takes you back to the living room, Benny and Will each holding a side of Santi easing him down onto the couch.
“I took the liberty of calling a company to come out tomorrow to install the carpet,” Mya tells you, handing you your phone you had left outside.
You thank her before plopping down on the couch next to Santi, your head resting on his shoulder.
“Baby, you're the best,” Benny tells Mya.
“Oh ho ho no Benny Miller, you owe me 100 bucks, and I owe you a massive I told you so!” Mya points at him.
The room bursts into laughter again. What a great way to spend a Saturday.
Summery: “I’m a vampire… a goddamn vampire,” you whisper.You wake up in the living room of a gothic house, and are told you were found unconscious in a graveyard. They claim you are a vampire. As crazy as it is, you can't help but start to trust the couple who found you.
Chapter Notes: hello! welcome to me writing again! i'm taking inspiration for the characters in the house from both the '90's movies and the '60's show. the '60s show has a special place in my heart, but i do like the movies a lot as well, so i'm taking elements from both! i'll update tags as i update chapters. also yes, vampires, i'm queer and i want fangs okay. this is really just me projecting, but i do hope you enjoy it. :)(the chapter title is a lyric from from eden by hozier)
Your eyes blink open slowly as you register the dull pain thrumming through your body. You finally open your eyes and sit up, finding yourself in an unfamiliar environment.
“Where am I?” you mumble, looking around. You seemed to be in someone’s living room, but you don’t know whose. The decorations in the room are dark and acceltic. Your mind feels fuzzy and far away.
“You’re awake,” a small voice remarks. You turn and see a young girl with jet black hair tied into braids sitting in a chair near you.
“Who are you? And, uh, where am I?” you ask.
She stares at you for a moment. For a child, her presence makes you uneasy. “I am Wednesday Addams. You are in our house, the Addams Mansion.”
“Huh… Wednesday? That’s an interesting name. My name’s (y/n).”
“(y/n).” she repeated.
“Yeah,” you respond, trying to figure out what to ask next. You settle on asking, “Do you know how I got here?”
“Mother and father found you in the cemetery on their walk. You were collapsed on the ground. Why are you covered in blood?”
“I’m not-” you look down. Sure enough, your clothes are soaked in blood. “What the-” you panic, your breathing getting faster. You look over at Wednesday, who weirdly enough seems unaffected by the bloodstains in your shirt. You try and think back to what happened. You vaguely remember being in the cemetery, so Wednesday must be telling the truth. You were in the cemetery. Why? You try and remember earlier in the day. You must have been on a walk. You were walking in the cemetery, and something must’ve happened.
“Maybe… Maybe you should get your parents,” you tell her, trying to keep your composure.
“Alright. Stay here.” Wednesday exits the room, leaving you alone and confused.
Several minutes later, you hear someone approaching. A short man with slick black hair and a mustache wearing a blue pinstripe suit enters the room. Following him is a tall woman, she has long black hair and pale skin, and is wearing a tight black dress.
“You’re awake!” the man exclaims, “Welcome! I’m Gomez Addams, and this is my beautiful wife Morticia,” he gleams over in her direction, “How are you feeling?”
“I’m alright… uh, my name is (y/n). (f/n) (l/n).”
“What a lovely name,” Morticia interjects.
“Th-Thanks,” you respond quietly, “So, you guys found me, right?”
“Yes, we were out on a walk, it’s such a good night for it. And then we found you on the ground, so we had Lurch bring you here.”
“Lurch?” you question.
“Oh, yes, our butler,” Gomez replies, pulling a cigar out of his pocket, “Oh, do you want one?” He gestures the cigar towards you. You shake your head no. He whisks out a lighter, and lights the cigar, taking a long drag from it.”
“Well, thanks I guess for taking me in. I really don’t want to intrude, but is it okay if I stay for a while longer? My head still feels fuzzy.”
“Oh, of course, we’ll have Lurch fix up a room for you.” Morticia walks over to a rope tied into a noose hanging from a wall and pulls it. Suddenly a loud ringing fills the house, causing the floor to vibrate underneath you. You jump slightly.
A tall man enters the room. At least you think he’s a man. He couldn’t be less than six and a half feet tall, with a strong rectangular face and a heavy brow. He’s wearing a black suit with a crisp white shirt underneath.
“You rang?” he drawls.
“Oh yes! Fix up a room for our new guest, would you old man?” Gomez answers. Lurch groans, and leaves the room.
“That- that was Lurch?” you ask hesitantly.
“Yes! What a charmer, he is.” he laughs.
“Oh, yeah…” you answer. Now that you’ve been conscious for awhile, you can’t help but notice how odd everything in this house is. A giant butler, gothic decorations, and a small child who was unnerving to say the least. But you do suppose they have been awfully kind to you. “Thanks again, for helping me and letting me stay.”
“It’s our pleasure,” Morticia smiles, “It’s been awhile since we’ve had any vampires in the house, hasn’t it dear?” she turns to Gomez. “It certainly has been a long time at least!” He agrees.
“Vampire?” you ask.
“You are one, aren’t you?” she asks. You take it back. No matter how lovely they were, they had to be nuts.
“I’m- I’m not a vampire.”
“Sure you are!” Gomez replies.
“No, I’m not.” you argue.
“Well, then what’s with the holes in your neck?” he asks, pointing to your neck with his cigar.
“I don’t have-” you bring your hand up to your neck, jumping as you feel two identical indents in your neck. You press on them, moving your fingers, wincing as you feel the two small holes in your neck. “This has to be some sort of joke,” you try and reason.
“I’m afraid not dear. Did you not know?” Morticia asks.
“Did I not know? Know I’m a vampire? That’s- I mean. I would remember that. I mean, I still can’t really remember tonight, I’m only missing a couple hours, but besides that, I wasn’t a vampire before!” you thread your fingers through your hair.
“Why don’t you take a look in the mirror?” Morticia suggests, “That way you can see for yourself.”
“Okay, okay,” you walk towards a mirror positioned on the wall. You go to look to look in the mirror, but nothing was there. You move back and forth, but still nothing. “I- I can’t… I can’t see myself. This mirror does work, right?”
Gomez steps next you, appearing on the mirror as well. “I hate to break it to you old man, but I think Morticia is right, you’re a vampire.” he pats you on the back with a sympathetic hum. You stand there dumbfounded before moving back to the couch, plopping down without a word.
“I’m a vampire… a goddamn vampire,” you whisper.
“Would you like something to drink?” Gomez offers.
You pause, “You know what, yeah.”
Gomez walks over to the table, opening a box and dropping grapes into it. A few seconds later a hand ascends with a bottle of wine.
“Why thank you, Thing.”
“Thing?” you ask.
“Ah yes, he’s quite handy,” Gomez remarks, pouring the wine. He hands you a glass. After everything you’ve seen and heard today, you decide to roll with the punches. Sure, a hand in a box just handed you wine. At least it- or Thing had the decency to give you alcohol. You take a swig of the wine, a deep red that swirls in your glass.
“Thank you.” You set your glass on the table after another drink. Gomez goes to hand Morticia her glass, but miscalculates the distance, creating a loud crash as the glass falls to the floor.
“I have it,” Morticia says, trying to pick up the glass, before she retracts her hand, hissing in pain.
“Querida! Are you alright?” Gomez asks, concerned.
“It’s fine darling, see?” she opens her hand, revealing blood coming out the tip of her index finger. On impulse, you lunge forward, taking her hand into yours, and attaching your mouth to her finger. You suck up the blood from the wound, taking in the smooth texture of her skin and the metallic taste of her blood. You could swear you heard her breath hitch as you try and take more, the craving for blood almost overtaking you. You look up and meet her eyes, thinking about how beautiful they are before snapping back to reality.
You launch yourself away from her back to the opposite end of the couch. “Oh my God. I’m sorry. Oh my God, I’m so sorry. Sorry.” you mutter, standing abruptly, before quickly leaving the room, “Sorry.”
You run through the hallways until you feel like you’re far enough away to slow down. You slow your pace to a calm walk, and wipe your chin, taking a moment to look at the blood on your hand. You wipe it on your shirt. It was ruined earlier anyway, what’s a little more blood? After wandering for a while, you realize you are lost, and have no idea where your room is. The pit in your stomach grows thinking of talking to Morticia and Gomez again, and suddenly you feel drained once more.
You eventually see Lurch through the doorway of a room. He’s sitting and playing the harpsichord. You can tell it’s a classical piece from the romantic era, but you can’t place what it is. It sounds lovely. You finally cough lightly to make your presence known. The music abruptly stops as he turns his head and stares at you.
“Could you- could you show me to my room?” you ask.
He gets up, stretching back to his full height. “Follow me.”
You follow behind him through the winding hallways until he stops in front of a door and opens it.
“Your room,” his voice rumbles.
“Thank you,” you respond, walking into the room, and closing the door. You survey the room; it has a queen sized bed along with a large wardrobe, and in the corner there is a desk with a chair. All the furnerature is made of a dark wood that matches the house’s dark aethstetic. You wander in farther to discover a well furnished adjoining bathroom. On the wardrobe are some clothes folded neatly.
“At least I can wash up and change into something clean,” you say to yourself.
You step into the bathroom and start stripping. You grimace at your destroyed clothes, soaked in blood. You wait for the water to heat up before stepping into the shower. You hum as the water beats on your worn skin. Yes, the house you’re in is odd, but it does have amazing water pressure, you note. Red flows down the drain as you scrub the day off of you. Eventually after some soap and more time under the water, you step out feeling clean again.
You find a fluffy towel and dry off. After you try to check your hair in the mirror, but you're just reminded of what you’ve just learned. You can't place it, but the odd feeling in your chest feels familiar.
You sigh and go to pick out some clothes to sleep in. You decide to wear a light pullover sweater and your boxers to sleep. The sweater you found is dark and made of soft fabric. You yawn and turn towards the bed. Despite being knocked out earlier, you still feel tired. You crawl into the bed and under the smooth sheets. The blankets on the bed are warm, making it easier for you to drift to sleep.
