Honestly being taught media literacy just depends on the teacher you have. I had a teacher in the 6th grade who loved to get us talking about stuff and thinking about it. She would have us think critically about all the characters and their motivations, and wether we thought one of them was wrong and why. Next grade I had an english teacher who didn't give a shit and just had us read something and never speak a word about it, it was just something you had to do to pass the class

Oh I know, I’m sure a good teacher could really get the ball rolling there. The thing is almost all my English teachers across 3 schools had the same habit of caring more about proving the validity and beauty of their own interpretations, which I get! But like!!! It was really annoying!! Some were better at it than others, letting kids talk more & stuff. But the worst of them made class a slog.

The main one who didn’t do the forced interpretation thing so much was this really sweet old lady who was very nice and got us snacks but also we spent a lot of time watching movies lol.

But in her class I basically figured out that I was against the death penalty cuz of independent research time I did for a paper, and that’s how I figured out that I didn’t trust the government and the death penalty doesn’t really help victims and all that stuff.

But that’s the exception to my experiences with English teachers (had like, at least 6 of them? Maybe more? And 2 of them were actually kinda helpful to my memory, but one of those classes was a poetry class that was elective so idk)

Also that might’ve been cuz she didn’t really care what we did as long as we we’re participating? So I had time to look into a subject I’d already been studying/thinking about (the death penalty)

It’s also possible that her not caring let me get more comfortable in her class faster than other classes- which could have really affected my performance because I was basically a feral child before I was thrown into high school and that is only kind of an exaggeration. (I didn’t speak to anyone outside my immediate family for years before high school. it was not a pretty sight)

So like, at the end of the day maybe the teacher who had us watch 3 different versions of Romeo and Juliet in class was the best one????

No but fr, generally I do agree it depends on teacher, but I disagree with the idea that the format of English class itself teaches you those things in meaningful ways. Idk how syllabus are decided on but I don’t really think the assignments are super great at things like teaching you to spot misinformation & stuff.

ok ive only seen the eps once each and im going off of memory so a lot of this is probably gonna be paraphrased and mixed up but whatever . also this post is really fucking long lol sorry

-OK FIRST OFF THESE WERE SO GOOD RAAAAAH

-obviously we are in the farmworld, not surprised but very happy!!!

-also not very surprised fionna and cake immediately went along with simon’s plan

-the whole time they were talking about where to find a crown i was like lol. simon don’t look behind you

-cake bringing fionna a dead rat was really funny

-the versucci gag or whatever was also really good

-but what made me die was fionna talking abt how she’s played a lot of post apocalyptic rpgs and then it pans over to “man who has actually lived through the apocalypse”

-was really cool to see how the farmworld has developed after what happened with ice finn, i think it’s interesting how they’re more technologically advanced since the first time an ice age happened in this world they pretty much reverted to medieval times (does that make sense. you know what i mean)

-i was SO convinced jay was farmworld finn’s little sibling so when he said dad my heart stopped

-the name jay didn’t immediately click until bonnie was revealed to be one of his other kid’s name and i was like HOLY SHIT PUHOY???

FERNWEH | Part One Of The Eclipse Series 

Pairing: Minho/Hayoon 

Synopsis: Finding a new home was easy, making one was even harder. Yet Hayoon seems to find the feeling of comfort in a small cottage in the woods, in the arms of a stranger. 

Part 1 

A smaller town was supposed to be better, a smaller town was supposed to be less conspicuous and less troubled. Moving from the city hadn’t been Hayoon’s idea but it was indeed for a better life. Although a thirteen hour car ride next to a snoring Ozlo was hardly comfortable, it was better than where she was before. 

As they got further away from the cities and the forests started to pass by the car, Hayoon’s mother seemed to smile more and life returned to her once gray and depressed features. It was something she hadn’t seen since Prince was born, the blonde haired male sitting in the front seat of her car with his earphones plugged in. 

The house they pulled up to was a small red cottage on an acre of lands, the grass was greener in some places and it looked like it hadn’t rained in a while by the small dirt patches here and there. Hayoon stepped out of the car and sighed deeply.

Physical wounds healed but mental ones did not. 

“Look alive,” Ozlo laughed as he slung his arm over her smaller shoulder, “I’m sure we can still get a decent internet connection out here,” 

Ozlo was the eldest of the three, with the closest looking feature to their mother. In the recent years, he had gotten taller and filled out more, growing into more of an adult. It was like it had suddenly happened over night, a shock that had come to only Hayoon and her brother apparently. 

“Not the internet connection I’m worried about,” Hayoon whispered. 

“It’s a new start,” There mother smiled, “Fresh air will do the two of you some good,” 

Prince simply grunted and shoved his hands in his pockets while Hayoon stared out into the forest.

High school had always scared Hayoon. The overactive teenagers, the bullying, the noise. Hayoon wanted nothing more than to curl into a ball and play her game boy. Atleast English would be her first class, something Hayoon had always excelled in. 

The small town's high school didn’t have an overly massive class, there was only two of every class to fit the school’s capacity of students. The curriculum didn't seem up to date in Hayoon’s opinion, as the reading of Romeo and Juliet they were being assigned to do was something she had done last year and received top marks for. 

Although everyone seemed to know everyone which only made Hayoon feel like an outsider. She only needed to make it to the end of the school year and then maybe she’d just ship off the furthest college or even one abroad. Ozlo had never gone to college after all, maybe Hayoon could be the first one. 

Hayoon felt a slight tap on her shoulder that alerted her out of her thoughts, shoulders going stiff and eyes going wide behind her glasses. Perhaps she was being mistaken as someone else and this would be a short conversation. She turned slowly, staring at the person behind her. 

He had long brown hair and a cheeky smile on his face, Hayoon blinked a few times before he laughed softly at her expression and leaned forward over his own desk. She picked up the slight smell of pine cones as he leaned closer to her. 

“I’m Johnny,” He grinned. 

“Oh, Hello,” Hayoon whispered, “My name is Hayoon,” 

“Ahh, I’m gonna call you Yoonie,” Johnny shrugged, “Where you fr-” 

“Mr Suh!”

Johnny looked up with an annoyed look on his face while Hayoon almost jumped out of her seat. The teacher was an extremely pale man with black hair brushed to the side, his arms were crossed over his chest and Hayoon felt uncomfortable under his gaze. Meanwhile, Johnny simply rolled his eyes. 

“Yes, Mr Pale Face?” 

“Since you have bonded with our new student so quickly, how about you be her partner for the essay?”

“You live with your cousins?” 

“Yeah,” Johnny smiled charmingly as he drove, “We live further into the inlands than some of the others, we’re all really close,” 

Hayoon glanced out the window, watching the trees flash by. The forest was becoming a comfort for her, the thick denseness of the trees and the dirt, the darkness during the night, it was an ominous love she was developing. 

“I don’t know any of my cousins,” Hayoon explained gently, she was growing to trust Johnny rather quickly, “I have two brothers though, there my best friends,” 

“My cousins and I were all raised together,” Johnny explained as he turned down a dirt road, “Our parents were all extremely close and we were basically raised like brothers, a few of them go to the school too,” 

“Oh, I didn’t see any,” Hayoon whispered. 

“They had the day off, my eldest cousin Minho thinks I’ve missed too much school and made me go,” He laughed, “Good thing, because it meant I met you,” 

As the truck came to a stop, Johnny jumped out and slammed the door shut, making Hayoon flinch. The house was a wooden cabin, quite large and with decorative wind chimes hanging from the front porch. It felt extremely homey in a strange way, like something longed for Hayoon to be there. 

She climbed out and followed Johnny as he unlocked the door to the cabin like house, the wood slightly creaking under her feet. The smell of mint and pine cones filled the air, making her glance around softly. There was a large table in front of a kitchen and a wide lounge room that seemed to be an open space. It was clean and spacious. 

Johnny chuckled down his bag on the table before rummaging through the kitchen. Hayoon sat down at the table, pulling out her book and flicking over to the necessary pages. 

“Do you want anything to eat?” Johnny offered. 

“No thank you,” Hayoon smiled softly, “Which relationship would you like to focus on?” 

“Not Romeo and Juliet,” Johnny fake gagged as he sat down at the table, a large bowl in his hands, “Everyone’s going to do it,” 

“How about the relationships between Romeo and the other Montague men such as Benvolio and Mercutio?” Hayoon asked softly, “Then we can focus on there feelings and reactions after Romeo and Juliet’s deaths,” 

The male smiled and leaned in close, “Aren’t you a smarty lil Yoonie,” 

A loud creak made Johnny look up suddenly, the door to the house opening and Hayoon averting her eyes quickly. The male didn’t seem phased, leaning back in his chair and shoving a spoonful of ice cream in his mouth. 

Five men walked in, all shirtless and with a tattoo between their shoulder blades that seemed to depict a moon. Two of them stopped at the sight of Hayoon, eyes going wide with another two went straight to the kitchen.  A cheeky smile spread onto the tall mens faces, as they stalked over to Johnny. 

“Look at you, bringing a girl home!” One of them howled with laughter, “Our baby Johnny got a girlfriend,” 

Johnny’s cheeks went red, “Knock it off, we’re just studying!”

“We all know what studying is code for,” The other smirked, looking at Hayoon and winking, “I’m Jaehyun,” 

“Knock it off,” 

A deep and authoritative voice filled the air, making Hayoon jump and look up at the fifth male as he shut the door. He was only one with the decency to have a shirt covering his body, dark brown hair brushed back by his hands and a strong jaw line that supported high cheekbones. Hayoon’s eyes refused to wander away from the stranger, especially as he looked back at her. 

Honey brown eyes stared back at her, seeming to swirl with an unknown nature. His entire look was like it had been carved by gods and then blessed by angels, Hayoon wanted nothing more than to reach out and cup his face and run the tips of her fingers over his skin. When he finally looked away, Hayoon felt slightly lost and averted her eyes to the ground. 

Redness rushed into her cheeks as she fumbled with the book in her hands, the male walked over to the table calmly and glanced over the books before he looked at Johnny. 

“We have a guest and you're stuffing your face in front of her?” He asked. 

“I offered her something!” Johnny whined, “Your rude for not introducing yourself,” 

“Your guest, you should be doing the introductions,” 

Johnny pouted for a moment before he looked at Hayoon, a large grin spreading over his features. She smiled shyly up at him, still fumbling with the book and running her fingers over it’s slightly damaged spine.

“Yoonie, these are my cousins,” Johnny explained, “The two stuffing their faces in the kitchen are Chanyeol and Jongin, these are Lucas, Jaehyun and Minho,” 

Hayoon waved shyly. 

It was going to be a long year.

HISTORY

annie is the only daughter to jameson cohen, single father and vintner. they live on their winery in napa valley, a large expanse of land with neighbors such as domain chandon and beringer vineyards.

annie’s parents had her young—at the ages of 21 and 22—which resulted in her mother leaving shortly after her birth. she doesn’t know much about her, save for her name (emmeline), how she looks in a few old photographs, and the shit talk comments her paternal grandmother mutters under her breath about how she must be galivanting off in italy or greece to this day.

growing up with her father had its difficulties, seeing as he was plenty busy running the business and estate. still, he did his best to prioritize her upbringing and devote a lot of time to her. and when it got to the point where it just wasn’t possible to juggle everything, he hired an au pair (fr). madeleine, 24 and from france. she quickly became something of an older sister figure, even teaching annie almost perfect french over the years.

seeing as she was still pretty lonely in that big ol’ house, madeleine suggested that james enroll annie in dance classes at a very young age. this would end up being a cornerstone of the girl’s life, from your standard baby’s ballet class (well, pre-ballet) to advanced pointe technique.

truly, though, she adored it and still does, which is why she’s pursuing it as a career (as well as taking some business courses here and there in the case that she has to manage the winery at some point).

MENTAL HEALTH / SECRET

tw: mental disorder / bipolar: around her sophomore year of high school, annie started experiencing rapidly changing moods and confusing emotions. for a small while everyone deduced it to “hormones,” but after what was revealed to be a manic episode, she was diagnosed with bipolar I and put on medication by her new psychiatrist.

however, she kept the situation on the DL, only her father and maddie being aware.

enter university. annie graduated, got accepted into yates due to stellar grades and her impressive pursuit of the arts, and was off to the east coast.

however exciting, the downside was that she started slacking on taking her medication. not often or for long periods of time, but still. everything seemed to be going along seamlessly, though, so she didn’t take it as seriously as she should’ve.

that is, until this past summer. she’d registered for classes throughout the summer semester, but a week long episode that resulted in spotty memory and regrettable decisions prompted her to drop the classes just before they started and check herself into a psychiatric unit a few towns over.

now she’s back for the fall semester and her senior year, giving the cover story that she decided last-minute to take the summer off and visit home after all.

Halsey’s “Bad at Love” One of the things I love about giving homilies at the Hopkins Mass is researching the pop culture we live in today. If it weren’t for this Mass and you guys, I wouldn’t know Childish Gambino from Chance the Rapper. Since the homilies are about the culture we live in, and we try to find spiritual lessons through pop culture, I get to explore not just what’s going on, but what it means, and how it influences us for good or for ill. __________ Take Halsey, our topic for the Mass today. She’s a major phenom in pop music these days. Actually, her stage name "Halsey" is an anagram of her first name, Ashley. Her real name is Ashley Nicolette Frangipane. She sounds like the girl next door, doesn’t she? __________ She just had a birthday yesterday; “Happy Birthday, Halsey!” She turned 24. Give her credit. She’s accomplished quite a bit in those years. __________ By the time she was 20, she realized she was very talented, and she was ambitious and hard- working, too. She first gained attention for her music on social media and was signed to a contract in 2014. She toured with acts such as Imagine Dragons to promote her debut album, “Badlands” (2015) It was certified platinum and four singles were released from the album. __________ But, Halsey really became famous with "Closer" (2016), a collaboration with The Chainsmokers. Her second album, “Hopeless Fountain Kingdom” (2017), had more "radio friendly" music on it. It became her first album to top the US charts. It generated the single we’re talking about tonight, "Bad at Love.” __________ So, here we are with Ashley Nicolette Frangipane who’s great at music, but bad at love. Since she sings about being bad at love, and this Mass uses a lot of music to make spiritual points, I’m interested in why she’s bad at love, because I want to help all of us avoid the same problem in our lives. __________ Halsey has done drugs in the past and she has abused alcohol, but she isn’t doing either one of them now. She did attempt suicide a few years ago, but she seems to be somewhat more stable now. That’s good, but she’s got a big conflict in her life. __________ She admits she’s way overworked because of her career—for a while she was admitting herself to the hospital every few weeks because of exhaustion and anemia. Because of this, she had a miscarriage; a few minutes later she was on stage giving a live concert. After that “angry performance”-- her words, not mine--she told a friend she didn’t feel like a human being anymore. “I had the miscarriage because of my insane lifestyle.” __________ Even more than her career, Ashley wants to have a real love in her life. She’s surrounded by people, but she’s lonely. She fills her house with “friends,” but she’s not always sure who they are! She gone through more relationships than she can count, guys and girls both, but she really hasn’t been able to give them the time they need, so, they haven’t worked out. __________ Because she doesn’t have time for real love, and is, therefore, bad at it, she has to be satisfied with a fantasy love, which is not healthy psychologically. Enter her fantasy lover, Leonardo DiCaprio, who, by the way, she has never met. __________ She’s obsessed with DiCaprio, but not the middle-aged DiCaprio of 2018, who’s old enough to be her father. She wild about the skinny-boy Leo of the mid-1990s, who was in his early 20s at the time, younger than she is now. The reason she likes this DiCaprio is because she’s obsessed with his movie version of “Romeo and Juliet,” called “Romeo + Juliet,” circa 1996. __________ Now, I am second to no one in my admiration for Shakespeare. “Romeo and Juliet” is probably the greatest romantic tragedy in the history of drama. But, it is a tragedy. That means the situation is an impossible disaster, a dystopia. Lots of people die in the play, including Romeo and Juliet, who are, by the way, young teenagers. In fact, Juliet is only 13 years old in the play, 11 years younger than Halsey. And, Romeo, who may be no more than 16, says, “I am fortune’s fool.” In other words, he believes that the Fates are conspiring to destroy the two "star-crossed lovers." __________ Now, I wish Halsey well. I think she has a good heart: she’s involved in suicide prevention awareness and sexual assault advocacy. She has a right to her own life, and a real love in that life. All of us have a right to that. All of us deserve to be loved and cared for, don’t we? But, Ashley/Halsey has got a big girl decision to make: if she truly wants to be a healthy person and have a family as she insists, then she can’t have a career that overwhelms her life 24/7. Some people can do all that, but, experience has shown that she can’t. __________ Last week, we prayed for the soul of Avicii, who committed suicide this year after destroying his health and his spectacular career. This week, let’s not just highlight Halsey’s music, let’s pray for her and her personal life as well. Like Avicii, she’s a world-class talent, but, by her own admission, she "Bad at Love." When we offer our prayers for her, and for ourselves, let’s paraphrase Psalm 19: “Lord, refresh HER soul, and OUR souls as well!”

Nothing beats a sweet, smiley senior and this handsome redhead stands out in a crowd for more than just his cuddling abilities and good looks. He can be shy at first but once he warms up he's wonderfully social and loves people and other dogs, happily bouncing around in playgroup and enthusiastically greeting pups of all sizes when out for a walk. He seems very house trained and enjoys long strolls in the park and gently eating liver treats from my hand, though he did turn his nose up at my generic beef jerky. Around strangers, Romeo is shy and it depends on who he gets along with. He may growl at certain people or will be nice to certain people. Around children, Romeo is friendly and respectful. Romeo has been around other dogs before he is friendly with both small and larger dogs. Romeo has been around cats he is respectful and friendly. He does not resource guard food bowls toys or treats. When someone unfamiliar approaches the home, Romeo will bark and will also bark if someone approaches his owner. He has not bitten another animal or person, is housetrained and his energy level is described as medium, friendly, playful and mellow. Other Notes: Romeo has received a bath from the previous owner and he enjoys it.
