not sure how common of a sentiment it is but some of my favorite particles of guild wars 2 were in wandering the maps early on completing the renown hearts. i've seen these referred to as tedious fetch activities before, but i loved to 'walk around putting feed in cow troughs / disarming landmines / clearing out giant spider egg sacs / setting up bear traps / selecting the correct dialogue options for NPCs.' i loved getting to know the world in that manner - the free roam format of gw2 doesn't instruct you 'i run a farm - what you have to do now is fetch me 5 pieces of firewood and return, thank you, here's a second thing, i have rats, go kill 5 rats and return', it says 'i run a farm where i'm currently stretched thin ever since the elder dragon disruption - we have a rat infestation, we need firewood, our fences are in disrepair, wild animals keep killing my chickens, and workers are forgetting to take breaks and eat, and i haven't had time to make the rounds and bring them these lunches i packed. if you could lend a hand with any amount of any number of these things, you would be saving my hide.' then you go to the next settlement and they're like 'we're a research team studying the effects of the elder dragon blight on the land - we need to make sure our monitoring devices are set up properly, that any researchers that may have passed out from environmental hazards are recovered and / or defended against hostile life, and that we weed out any inquest spies among us that want to use our data for nefarious purposes.' and so on. eventually, the accumulation of any small activities you do in aid fills up the bar for the area to completion. i even like traditional fetch quest format myself, but it's the difference between being told 'hey, my hands are full, can you hold the door for me' and seeing someone with their hands full approaching a door and having the option to hold it open. you become a good samaritan and an active participant in the world. you understand the broader scope of people's daily struggles and get a sense of what their lives are like. it made me care about the world. my long winded post to say they should have let you help kryptis in their little camps set up fortifications and raise morale by talking to them and helping one of them collect nayos flowers because it heard that tyrians have rituals to commemorate their dead and a few astral ward people died in here and they want to do something for them

Birthday Magic!!
Hello friends!! June is my birthday month (today being my birthday), so I thought I would take us through all the magical significance of a birthday, and include some exclusive spells, divination, and more than I like to do as my birthday approaches!! Your birthday is special, take some time to celebrate yourself!!! Whether you are with family or friends, or celebrating on your own, you have a lot to be excited for! Lets get started
What is the cultural significance of a birthday?
Before calendars were invented it was really hard to remember when someone may have been born, but it is said to have started in ancient Egypt where birthday parties were held to celebrate the commemoration of the new pharaoh! In the pagan world it was said that someone had a spirit present with them on the day of their birth and was said to help guide them through life, which is how the spirit guide was born!
Birthdays first started a form of protection, in ancient Greece they were the first to celebrate with birthday candles as a way to ward off evil spirits who would come during major events! The candles, friends, and good vibes were a way to protect the birthday person!
In ancient china, the first birthday was considered the most special, and was celebrated with a special ritual called 'Zhuazhou' where a cloth was placed in front of the baby with different objects and from there the baby and its family would see the future ahead!
The modern birthday, as we know it, is actually partially German who began adding cakes, candles, and eventually in the united states a pair of Kentucky school teachers came up with the birthday song after remixing it from a song called 'Good morning to all' and now we have the modern birthday!
How can I honor my own birthday?
Understand your birthday superstitions! Do you find yourself feeling more spiritual on your birthday? How about fending off bad luck if you were born on friday the 13th? Understanding your birthday traditions can help you connect more to new magical traditions that work for you
Understand what your birthday represents to you. When we get older, for some people birthdays can fill us with all sorts of emotions. Some people get excited and throw big parties, for some birthdays are really tender and sources of anxiety so its important to seek out friends and family. Understanding what your birthday corresponds too can be really important for how you choose to celebrate
Understand that you are human. Above all else, honor the fact that you are still standing, that you are here on this earth, and that you did it. It is a big achievement to be still here, and I am so proud of you. Take some time to be proud of yourself my love
Lets talk practices!
Lets go into common rituals, correspondences, tarot spreads, and more!
Practices:
When you blow out candles on a cake reflect on your wish and the history of that tradition
When singing the birthday song, add fun in-between's like "Cha cha cha" to welcome spirits of prosperity
Begin a journal, consecrate an altar or book of shadows, or deep clean your spiritual space for a total energetic refresh
Practice self care and open all those fancy soaps. Practice glamour magic with saved items for an energetic boost
Create a potion using mint, chamomile, and lemongrass for career and academic successes. This potion refreshes your mind and uses birthday energy for renewal
Create spells with renewal, celebration, and reflection in mind
design a spell using your birthdays moon phase and moon sign
Create a blessings spell for the year
Create a crystal grid that represents you and things that make you feel good like colors, energies, and shapes
Practice birthday rituals your ancestors would have practiced
Look up the moon phase and sign and design a birthday ritual with that in mind
Wear favorite colors to represent your sense of self and stability into the next year
Iris's Birthday Seed Spell:
Ingredients:
A pot
a seed of your choice (preferably ones in season on your birthday)
soil
The Steps:
On the bottom of the pot draw a sigil of prosperity and fortune
around the pot, write down goals you have for yourself
as you plant the seeds focus on your intentions for the year ahead and cover them with soil
OPTIONALLY add crystals like moss agate, tree agate, or pyrite on top of the soil for an energetic boost
As you tend to the plant, remember to tend to your dreams
Divination:
Compare and contrast todays astrological chart with the one from your day of birth
Find out what your birth card is and what it means for you
Use a pendulum around your house to find lost objects you may have forgotten about this year
Get yourself a new divination tool
Practice divination your ancestors would have used
Create a shufflemancy playlist by taking the top song on the charts every year on your birthday, then setting it to shuffle.
Calculate your life path number
Symbols:
Cake
candles
Favorite foods, items, and colors
Birth stones, cards, flowers, numbers, and signs
Flowers in general
Large gatherings
Birthchart sigils
Personal Symbols
Mundane:
Remember, Birthdays are filled with a lot of emotions for people. Some people are very excited to celebrate, and others may be stressed, experience feelings of depression, and regret. It is valid to feel any type of way, make sure you are feeling it! On your birthday seek out your support system, whether its friends, family, or teams. They want to celebrate you with you!
Another thing is actually take this time to celebrate you! This is a time to honor another rotation around the sun, it is valid to reflect on anything that comes up for you. Remember that you are not alone, and you are loved very much. Birthdays are special, even if we try to deny it sometimes. Birthdays are special, because you make them special!
If its not your birthday, and you have a friend or family members coming up, it costs nothing to make someones day with a simple text, happy birthday gif, or some time to just sit down and chat. Take care of your friends, as they take care of you. That friend may be excited to host a party, or that friend may want to be left alone, However they choose to celebrate is unique and valid. Make sure that they feel appreciated just like you would want to feel appreciated.
With that said, Here are a few ideas for how to celebrate your birthday in a mundane way, and some tips for birthday wellness
Ideas:
Host a small get together for your friends and family
Reflect on your past in the morning, Honor your present in the afternoon, and dream about your future in the evening
Enjoy your favorite meal
Try your hand at something new like painting, ceramics, or glass blowing
Get yourself a present
Rest!!! Catch up on your favorite show
Take an 'everything' shower
Relax with your favorite beverage
Enjoy a trail with your pets or just get active
Enjoy time out of the house people watching
Put the phone, work, and academia down, be present with yourself
Well with that said, i hope you all have enjoyed! Happy birthday to you, and I hope you have a prosperous journey around the sun once more!

noah is gay!!!! tell us all about it :3!!
tysm for asking, let's talk about it!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ bearing in mind i just woke up & my memory of anything not right in front of me ('the dream thieves' is in my hands rn) is nyot good sooo sorry for any glaring errors 😬
OK SO
wait i'm going to grab the first book send me luck i don't get dizzy getting out of bed too quick hahah
ok i got all 3 other books from the series we're in business baby
1. barrington whelk, family, & his alive days:
resentful, entitled, angry, lonely whelk is like that for a lot of obvious reasons but is also a mirror to noah. even after he was murdered brutally noah still loves glitter in snow globes & blue's spiky hair & playing with ronan. despite all the voices he hears whelk is alone & separate from his coworkers, noah is part of a family (even if not all of him is really there). tl;dr whelk is a reversing mirror to noah - & both are gay! comp het in an all-boys school for kids of rich & successful parents who stereotypically demand success & the perfect-seeming life (declan and the ashleys, get high grades or you're out, how much do those uniforms cost per year?). the czernys seem lovely at noah's funeral but who knows what pressures noah felt from them/school teachers/society or how much or little they acknowledged the existence of non-cishet identities. cabeswater takes adam's control over himself, his security in his own body, "I sacrifice myself." next to that, adam giving up everything, noah says "I almost woke up Cabeswater, we were close enough to do that." it's less how 'close' they were & actually how much whelk valued noah, reciprocated or not. or, this is noah talking, maybe noah thought they nearly woke up cabeswater, thought they were close enough to do that, but whelk didn't care enough for it to do that. noah makes excuses for whelk killing him (with crushing parallels to things people say in real life for people they love who hurt them). i'm including this whole paragraph because there's more here: ""You don't understand," Noah whispered. Blue was afraid he would disappear. This, she understood, had been a secret, carried inside him for seven years [since he died], and he still didn't want to confess it. "He was upset. He'd lost everything. If he'd been thinking straight, I don't he would've... he didn't mean to... we were friends like - are you afraid of Gansey?"" in the 7 years after he killed noah whelk didn't let himself miss him until it looks like he's going to die (neeve, ritual) at which point the guilt & all the good things about noah hits him & he feels "this terrible weight". of course all of this could be platonic but yeah it's just fun in a really heartbreaking & tragic way to think that they had Something almost romantic. "It was a strange, old expression, one that Whelk hadn't heard since his own days at Aglionby, when he, too, had been tight as ticks with his room-mate Czerny. [and they were room-mates!] He felt a hollowness inside him, like he was hungry, like he should've stayed home and drunk more to commemorate this miserable day." "Only Whelk and Czerny, treasure hunters and troublemakers, cared about [St Mark's Day's] existence." "Czerny and Whelk had returned, a half-dozen times, taking readings (next to the circle, there were six different numbers in Czerny's handwriting), digging in the dirt for possible artefacts, watching overnight for signs of supernatural activity." "All Whelk could find out was that the line loved reciprocity and sacrifice, but that was frustratingly vague." before whelk's family lost all their money him & noah kept pushing the ritual to wake the ley line back, there wasn't a desperate need (& maybe they liked staying there together overnight, taking readings, chatting). whelk's second girlfriend was "technically" noah's girlfriend.
2. adam vs whelk:
adam kills whelk. "[To Noah] Adam said, rather more ferocious than he'd been a moment before, "A friend wouldn't kill you."" whelk's ambition & the value he put on his family's good standing & his obsession after his dad's arrested and his family loses their money vs adam's ambition & the value he puts on improving his own good standing & his obsessive drive to push himself forward and up. "Adam had several things he thought about saying, but when he opened his mouth, it was none of those things. "Why Noah?" he asked. "Why not someone horrible?" Whelk closed his eyes for a bare second. "I'm not having this conversation. Why are you here?"" whelk hears 'voices' from his deal with cabeswater, adam sees 'ghosts' from his deal with cabeswater.
[when noah slips from time does that mean whelk does too?? or does he come back to life, if he never killed noah?? or does everything stay the same & they just fill in gaps where noah was to make it make sense???]
3. ronan & noah & The Secret.
"Noah said to Ronan, "I know why you're mad." Ronan sneered at him, but his pulse heaved. "Tell me then, Prophet." Noah said, "It's not my job to tell other people's secrets."" (this quote is so interesting - whose secret is it?? does he mean he can't tell ronan his own secret? or future!ronan's secret? someone else's??) [i could add more here about ronan & noah & cabeswater & cars, noah's red mustang, & both being gay but it's been nearly 90 mins & i'm getting sleepy again]
4. noah dies so gansey lives,
noah & whelk die vs adam & ronan live, whelk kills noah, adam saves ronan (& vice versa).
5. the blue kiss:
noah died when he was 17 - still learning about himself, still ("technically") dating a girl, so it makes sense that his ghost is still stuck in that mindset. maybe it's too early for him to realise he liked girls as friends, not romantically, maybe it's denial, maybe he never gets to work that out about himself. comp het, pressures of being in a rich family sent to a fancy & demanding school. offers to kiss blue if she's "curious" about how it feels, rubs the mark on his cheek from where whelk killed him before he does. the first kiss is a mess, the second is "a lot like kissing a dishwasher". "Blue squinted. "Are you sure you've done this before?" "Hey!" he protested. "It's weird for me, cause it's you." "Well, it's weird for me because it's you.""We can stop." "Maybe we should." then he refers to how kisses look in movies & says to imagine & copy those movie kisses - ok comp het, ok playing the part. after the 3rd kiss, "His smudge had got very dark, and he was cold enough that she shivered. Blue gave him a watery smile. "That was super nice." He shrugged, eyes doleful, shoulders curled in on themselves. He was fading. It wasn't that she could see through him. It was that it was hard to remember what he looked like, even while she was looking at him. When he turned his head, she saw him swallow. He mumbled, "I'd ask you out, if I was alive." Nothing was fair."
i listened to my noah playlist while writing this so shameless plug:
(i don't think maggie wrote him as gay, this is just fun playing about a character i love hahah)
#alternatively noah was a trans egg#who never cracked before dying#that was a fun way to wake up ty again for letting me talk about this!!#my impulse is to apologise for the essay but no-ones required to read it hahha#my post#noah czerny#other: trc#the raven cycle#i actually missed writing essays

@clay-the-watchdog
(prev) "For glorns sake.." As soon as things started to escalate when Thomas asked about Sam's full name, Cyrus was quick to try and pull Sam away from Thomas before he could really hurt him. "Let go of him." They slightly raised their voice at the Acolyte. "We seriously cannot afford to delay this ritual any further because of your inability to control yourself."
Sam for once listened to Cyrus and stepped away from Thomas when they were pulled. They took a deep yet quick breath in and out.
“You’re right. He’s not worth it. Nothing this clown says matters anyway since he’ll be dead in a few minutes.”
They took his shackles again and continued leading Thomas up the stairs.
Thomas glanced at Cyrus again. This entire time he’d been quiet toward them because he didn’t know what to say that wouldn’t cast their relationship as anything but friendly. Plus he basically told them everything he needed to say last night when they dropped dinner off. It kind of felt like one of those awkward moments when you say goodbye to someone and you both start walking the same way. So maybe it would be best to continue not talking to them, and just let them focus on this oh-so important ritual…
The group made it back up to sublevel two. When he stepped into the hallway, Sam turned around to face Cyrus and Thomas.
“I just got a great idea. I have GOT to take a commemorative selfie.”
He again pulled Thomas toward him like a ragdoll and took out his phone and held it up high. “Gotta savor my accomplishment of getting your sorry ass sacrificed, right?”
Before she took the picture, she glanced over at Cyrus. “You want in on this?”

New collar
I got a new collar today! I've been without for... probably over a month now (my owner has been traveling and too busy for the collaring ritual we both deserve).
I've been his collared slave for about three years now, I want to say. Jon prides himself on not being a typical Dom, so an eternity collar or O ring-style was out of the question. My collar has always been a little bauble that we've blown kisses and devotion into, an encapsulation of a moment in time where nothing matters but Us and our love (when normies would ask, "What's your necklace?" I would respond with, "A breath of fresh air"). He wrote in my collaring letter that he'd never give a collar like this to anyone else, so it's been an important symbol for us.
But eternity collars are popular for a reason: rustproof, shatterproof, generally indestructible for daily use. The iterations my collar has taken... were not any of these things. Jump rings broke, chains snapped, pretty much anything that could've gone wrong did go wrong. Five or six or seven times.
I was frustrated with this pattern. Not only did I have to keep buying materials, but my heart would break anytime my collar did. I think after the second or third time my collar got messed up, I told him, "I want something sturdier," but he reiterated how important the little bauble was to him, so I kept trying to make it work. I even wire wrapped the bauble directly to the chain, but two months ago, the bauble itself broke. I must have had something close to my chest (I've recently moved and have been carrying heavy boxes and the like), and when I looked down, I saw a bauble half-broken, pieces of glass shattered in my tshirt.
I brought my frustrations to him again. I wanted something as sturdy as our love; he wanted something symbolic and meaningful to us. I showed him my ideas, and we settled on a stainless steel pill/cremation remains holder, lol.
Today, we took turns talking about the things we value in our dynamic in the year 2023. When we were done, he told me to open the vial, cum, and release my breath into it. I was already crying when he told me, "Close it and put it to your forehead, like a little girl kiss. Touch it to the outside of each eye, because you know I'm always with you when you cry. Now touch it to the corner of your lips, because I always want you smiling for me. And between your tits, because that's where your heart beats for me. And to the bottom of your feet, because you follow in my footsteps. And between your wet little cunt, to commemorate where we started our dynamic."
I was sobbing a little bit and had to tell him it's all happy tears -- I'm just so grateful and proud to be owned by him.

The Same Kind of Weird
@flashfictionfridayofficial Characters from a story I rewrote a few years ago but started almost 20 years ago, based on a real friend of-- naturally-- almost 20 years. (Wow.)
(also for Writer's Month day 9 prompts warmth and home for the summer)
Brittany met Natalie at the spot in the woods the night she got back from college. She was watching the sun through the trees when she heard a “hey!” and when she turned, Natalie was running through the trees from the direction of her parents’ house. She didn’t lose all the speed before she reached Brittany and hugged her, almost knocking her over.
“Hi!”
“Hi!”
They looked at each other for a minute, each with a happy little sigh.
“I was expecting it to be chilly here because it’s warmer at school, but it’s pretty warm here. Surprisingly. Warmer than when I got out of the car.”
Brittany paid attention to the temperature for a second. “Yeah. I guess you’re right. Maybe it’s, like, sheltered by the trees?”
Natalie grinned. “Ten years ago you would have said something about it being magic.”
“Well, it wasn’t ten years ago–” Brittany started.
“Yes it was. I was in second grade. About to start it. Now I’m about to start 12th grade. Ten years.”
“Wow,” was all Brittany could think of to say. When Natalie giggled, she added, “It doesn’t feel like ten years. I mean, I guess it does since it feels like I’ve known you forever, but also ten years sounds like a lot. That’s like half my life.”
“It’s not half my life. Yet.” This time Natalie’s grin was mischievous.
“Future engineer. You don’t have to do math over the summer. Yet.”
Natalie giggled more.
“You know what me ten years ago would say? We should do some kind of… something to celebrate ten years.”
“Like a ritual?” said Natalie, reading her mind as always.
“If we can think of something.”
“Well, it should be at the end of the summer, if it’s commemorating the ten years. It’s not ten full years until the end of the summer. It was right before school started.”
“Right.”
“Oh! That thing we buried. Remember?” she asked– it must be obvious that Brittany didn’t. “When we did that secret club ceremony thing, we… wrote our names on paper or something? We each made something and we buried them all here. You and I buried them here. Obviously we didn’t tell anybody else about here.”
Brittany was starting to remember, vaguely. “I don’t think we put them in something to bury them, though. So we probably can’t dig them up– I think that’s what you were going to say. They probably got composted a long time ago.”
“Aw. I was thinking we could, like, tell everybody about them.”
Was Natalie still in touch with everyone who had been in the club? Brittany had lost touch with them when she started high school, except, of course, Natalie. “I feel like they’d think it was weird, us remembering a ritual from when we were like ten. Or younger.”
“Kenny didn’t. I mean I didn’t tell him about that–”
“What did you tell him about?” Brittany’s voice came out sounding a little distressed. She felt more than she sounded.
“That I used to do stuff like that as a kid. I don’t think I mentioned you,” Natalie added quickly. She had caught the distress. Of course she had. “I mean I know I’ve mentioned you but I don’t think I mentioned you when I talked about that. I think I just said it was something I did.”
“And he didn’t think it was weird?”
“No. He… Well, he didn’t exactly do rituals like that, but when he was a kid he used to pretend that he had a secret dragon. Kind of a cross between a dragon and a dinosaur. And he kept doing it when he got older– not really pretending it like he acted it out, but making up stories about it. So he gets making up things, and still being into it when you’re older. What?” she said, sounding a little worried, looking at Brittany, who was looking at her.
Brittany shook her head with a bit of a wry smile. “I’m still getting used to the idea of you having a boyfriend and you hit me with he gets the making up games thing. Somehow you found the one guy in the world who doesn’t think it’s weird.”
Natalie crossed her arms. “He can’t be the one guy in the world who doesn’t think it’s weird. Nobody is that unique.”
“Well, I’m assuming he doesn’t have a best friend of ten years who made up dragon stories with him.”
“I’ll ask.” Natalie seemed earnest.
Brittany shook her head with an affectionate laugh.

Tell us about the Ferrix Brick WIP?
Of course. It’s about how Kallus deals with the aftermath of The Battle of Scarif. Here’s a little bit from it.
“You know it might do you good to maybe clear some of this away.” Zeb suggested. He was starting to worry just how long Kallus had been in this state, and looking from the mess it seemed he was surviving on a diet of whisky and caf, and not much else.
Zeb glanced around the desk to assess the situation and decided the oldest, most offensive cups of caf needed to go first. There was one particularly pungent one on the very edge of what was once Cassian’s desk and judging from the green fur the was starting to creep over the edge of the cup, it had been there for quite some time.
“Don’t touch that!” Kallus panicked when Zeb reached out to move it and Zeb turned to look at him in shock. “That’s Cassian's...he...he would always get mad if I threw out his caf. He always said he preferred it cold anyway...”
“Sasha.” Zeb said carefully. Kallus was just standing there, his arms hanging sadly at his side and his eyes blinking wildly at the cup, tears streaming down his face. He didn’t sob or cry out however, it was like he didn't even realise he was crying.
“I, I keep thinking he's gonna walk in and pick it up like nothing happened.” Kallus confessed.
“Ok, that’s ok. That’s normal. I think?” Zeb tried, but his words didn't sound reassuring or remotely confident. He didn’t really know how to deal with grief, all he knew there were no rules or a right way to grieve, but that didn't help at all. “But, I also think you’ve been in this room too long? Maybe a shower and some fresh air could help. Some rest maybe?”
“Yeah, yeah I know I just...” Kallus sighed as he placed the container of debris and ash back on the desk and drummed his fingers nervously in the surface as he thought. “I just need to finish this ok, then, then I can rest.”
Zeb sighed in defeat as he looked around the room once again. He wasn't exactly sure what this meant, but it was obvious Kallus had been busy. There was a bright shining board behind him, the one that usually displayed important mission outlines and debriefings. Now, it held a giant map of the galaxy, with an alarming number of red dots in even more alarming places.
“You ain’t planning to go to all these places are you.” Zeb asked nervously as he toyed with some papers on his desk. There was a worrying amount of paperwork here on Jedha, and Zeb really hoped Kallus wasn't planning to try and see some of the destruction for himself.
“Just the ones I can go to.” Kallus shrugged, like he was talking about going to the store, not visiting multiple Empire territories and destroyed planets. “This is the main one I need to go.” Kallus explained pointing to one of the red dots on his screen in determination.
“Ferrix?” Zeb mumbled, squinting to look at the screen. The name sounded familiar, and when he looked around the office he could see it on many of the pieces of flimsi, from actual imperial files to hastily scribbled notes. “Can you go to Ferrix?”
“Doesn't matter if I can or not. I will.” Kallus said and Zeb had never heard him sound so determined in his life. “It’s where Cassian grew up, or at least its where he had the most happy childhood memories. He belongs there, with his mother and father. He'd want to be with them.”
Zeb shook his head in disapproval but he didn't say anything. Instead, he just flicked though papers on the desk as he waited for Kallus to finish updating whatever it was, he was doing on the map. He stopped and actually read the papers, and it took a second for it to sink in.
“Wait, what is all this?” Zeb asked Kallus as he realised it wasn't just this pile, but there were stacks of this research all over the office.
“Funeral rituals.” Kallus said bluntly, not even looking up from his map. “Trying to find how to properly commemorate everyone we lost.”

Pale 9.2
That was the awful part of life where it didn’t matter how smart you were. It just sucked to do and maybe if you were rich you could hire someone to handle it, sure, but she had no real interest in being rich.
being rich can be exchanged for not having to deal with boring parts of life!
She was a problem solver. She was dumb in some areas but she was good at that, especially if she had her friends at her back. Verona thought of Bristow. Sometimes she was too good at that.
Something that's come up a bit thinking back on Bristow is that Verona escalates beyond her intent or ability to handle.
In another country, retracing steps from blacked out days, weeks, or months, learning you had, ahem, dates with a string of washed-up celebrities, tipped the initial domino in felling an international drug cartel, and seeded a new religion, with one or all events commemorated with brand new tattoos.
so a normal shadowrun session
Charles’s entire tone was almost as if he wanted to die, talking about it. Like he was deathly tired of the subject or something.
I wonder why Charles is so annoyed by talking about the barrier. Just tired of having to reexplain it? Or does he not like the reminder that he can't practice anymore
“If I may interrupt,” Matthew said. “Sorry, we can’t dawdle or chit-chat too much."
This is the second time Matthew's cut Verona off from talking to one of the newer Others this meeting. She is getting off topic, but I wonder if he's mainly trying to keep the girls isolated.
It felt a bit like the new Others had been told things about them that had poisoned the waters. Like the first impression had been made for them already. Verona frowned.
yeah. The question is, by who? I could see Crooked Rook being wary of practitioners in general, but I'm more inclined to think this was some of the original Kennet Others, probably Matthew and Edith. They would be able to speak about the girls in specific.
"You can decide how you want to handle patrols for the rest of summer.” “And after summer?” Lucy asked. “We’ll see, I guess."
I am in a paranoid state of mind here and wondering if Matthew isn't planning for after summer because he doesn't think the girls will still be around then
“There’s no way to argue this point without sounding like an asshole,” Lucy said. “I don’t even care that much about the gifts but I do care that I’m being put in this position. We didn’t ask, Montague offered. And now we’re being made to look like bad guys for even entertaining it. This sucks, you guys, and it sucks because you’re making it suck, and I don’t know why you’re doing that."
Matthew has gotten a lot more openly hostile
“I’d like to formally announce my intention to do the familiar ritual with Snowdrop. I know it’s not the best shortcut to power, but if it keeps her around for longer than the usual four or five years of an opossum’s lifespan then I think that it’s something I really gotta do.”
hopefully this will defuse things a bit.
“About Raymond, we talked about him earlier, he wants to meet Charles. And about Zed, and about Nicolette, and even Jessica Casabien. We’d like to stay in touch with them. I’d like to get the okay to invite them to Kennet. We can get them to agree to stay quiet, I think, and not interfere. But when it comes to stuff like the wards, or finding the Others, I think they could be big helps.”
hmmm. So this is obviously not going to go over well. And honestly I'm not sure it's a great idea (though there are obvious benefits for getting more power and help). I wouldn't want Ray getting involved: I like him, but he didn't object to the things Alexander and Bristow did. He's also well established in his power and authority: I could see him, with good intentions, taking some level of control over Kennet. And he's so well-connected that anything he lets slip can travel far.
Zed and Nicolette... that's a mixed bag. They're both good people, but they'd come at Kennet from a practitioner's angle. And Nicolette stepped up during the coup, but I think with people (like the Kennet Others) she doesn't particularly know or care about, she'd put her own safety and future first. Zed is more ethical, but he's also very investigative, and I could see his sense of morality backfiring if he feels compelled to intervene.
Honestly, of all these people, I'd pick Jessica as the one to invite to Kennet. She's already an outsider to practitioner society: she seems to dislike most practitioners and isn't attached to their worldview. And she doesn't seem like she'd be overly interested in any of the Others who want to keep a distance. If Kennet could help her with her cousin, I could see her being a really solid ally.
Verona was really curious what had prompted Avery to bring that up.
wanting to build something, beyond just the three of them?
“The difference is the Others knew of you before that meeting. Came to terms with you, discussed you. For us, you were an afterthought.”
and you were in their power, unAwakened human children, not young but growing practitioners
In the back, Snowdrop chattered at Tashlit, “I don’t even get to be an honorary goblin. They’re so mean to me, they don’t share any of their snacks!”
aww
“We have people we care about just as much as you care about Chloe or Faith,” Lucy said. “If something happened to them… that’s nightmare material, as far as I’m concerned. If someone like Chloe hurt them… just about everyone in Kennet’s precious to someone, like that, aren’t they?”
ghouls really seem like a terrible situation. No ethical way of keeping up a reliable food source in any volume. A quick google says that Canada has around 8 deaths per 1000 people per year. Even assuming every single corpse goes to feed ghouls, you'd still need 6,500 people to keep one fed. Which could work out, with small numbers of ghouls in cities, but really can't be sustained in a town the size of Kennet.
Verona looked down. Looked around at the grass, which needed a bit of mowing, had some weeds. A few divots where something like groundhogs had dug through. A few trees stood at the back.
if Avery takes Snowdrop as a familiar, then it's Verona who'll be taking a Demesnse. So it's really her decision here
"It’s big and it would be yours, if you want it. The amount of space you start with is pretty important.”
true, though I think ideally you'd have a building, not just a vacant lot. Can you build a mundane house to use as a base once the Demesnse is already set?
Settling down, locking an area down as her own for life, taking on that as a responsibility and investment… it felt like a lot, somehow. Heavy.
Verona seems like the least of the three to want this
Tashlit gave her a thumbs up.
could Tashlit move in, if Verona has a Demesnse? Seems like it might be easier to weatherproof than just a shack.
Permanence was scary. The steps they couldn’t take back. Bristow. The things they couldn’t undo.

!Warning! Mentions of death/dead cats and illnesses
Also English is not my first language, sorry for mistakes
+ I haven't read warrior cats books in a very long time, so very not connected to canon
Snowdrop Clan
Legend says that clan was formed from exiled cats that had uncurbable illness. Cats helped each other and after sometime they found out that snowdrops give a small chance to cure that illness. Clan was named after that flower and it became important part of this clan culture.
The place were all clans reside has very harsh leaf-bares, because of that every leaf-bare there is a chance that half of the clan will die. If a kitten was born in leaf-bare and managed to survive clan will call them a kit of snow, which means that they will play an important role in clans history.
Clan has a ritual, every 1 moon of the new-leaf clan commemorates all of the cats that died this winter. If leaf-bare was kind and no one died, medicine cats have to fined a snowdrop and travel to Moon tree to talk with Starclan for guidance. They also offer the snowdrop to Wise Medicine Guide yes this is some cat god and it's cringe and not canon, I don't care I still like the idea.
Moon tree is not exactly a tree, it's a statue abandoned by two legs. Tree is full of colorful ribbons and crystals on threads. It's placed deep in the forest.
Medicine cats of this clan are regarded as the best in the business. If medicine cats from another clan can't cure one of their clanmates, they will be send on the territory of the Snowdrop Clan.
Even though Snowdrop clan has high reputation, other clans still are warry of them due to the legend.
1 moon
Cats dead:
Foggypaw (Male) 9 moons in life
Starclan guide
Troublesome, Quick to make peace
The first Medicine cat in the whole history of Snowdrop Clan. Before dying gave clue to her clanmate about the snowdrop. In Starclan due to the illness forgot everything about his life, but Wise Medicine Guide still gave him the Starclan guide title.
Cats alive:
Clovestar (Trans Female) 90 moons (9 lives)
Leader
Strict, Trusted adviser, Very clever
In the first moon that she became a deputy clan leader died, so she had to learn how to be a leader very fast. Even though she chose one of the wisest cats of the clan as her deputy, she stile made some devastating mistakes. This circumstances made her very strict toward her clan. She is very cold with other clans and thinks it would be better if Snowdrop clan closed it's borders, but that would go against Starclans wishes.
---
Palegrowl (Trans Female) 95 moons
Deputy
Wise, Trusted adviser, Good speaker
Was a kit of snow. Previous leader wanted her to be the deputy but she refused. It's unknown why she decided to become a deputy now. Clovestar asked her to take an apprentice in hopes that she would help them with their troubles, she didn't refuse but is not interested in teaching them anything. She says that now is not the time.
---
Locustfreckle (Female) 147 moons
Medicine cat
Righteous, Unnatural senses, Great mediator
One of the oldest cats in clan. Strong believer in eye for an eye phrase. When cats from other clans come for healing she will ask for something in return, something with the same price. Same with medicine cats from another clans, though here it's more of a knowledge for knowledge situation. Is thinking about taking deputies apprentice as here own student, but she is not sure.
---
Hushmurk (Female) 72 moons
Warrior
Nervous, Great storyteller
When she was a kit she liked to be in elders den and listen to their stories, mostly scary stories. Because of that she grew quite nervous. Non the less this didn't stop her from becoming a great warrior. At some point she found a kitten in the forest. It didn't seem sick, but she still had to go on patrols for medicine cat for 3 moons.
---
Heathpetal (Female) 32 moons
Warrior
Lonesome, Good storyteller, Fast runner
A very optimistic cat, but since last winter she started to isolate herself from clan. Her and her relatives went on hunt and fell in river. Heathpetal cut her face on some stone and ended up on the shore, others weren't as lucky. After that she tries to seem as well she's been before to not bother her clanmates.
---
Posyburst (Male) 118 moon
Warrior
Cunning, Great kitsitter, clever
Seems to be just a very lazy cat, and to be fair he is. He likes to hide somewhere and observe clans live. Because of that he also skips patrols quite often, which infuriates Clovestar. This feelings are reciprocated, Posyburst doesn't like the way his leader acts with other clans, he also doesn't think that current deputy is really the best choice out of all the cats on this role.
---
Tucker (Male) 50 moons
Warrior
Charismatic, Valuable insight, Good speaker
As a kit loved to run away from his twolegs house and travel in the forest. One time he got lost and was found by warriors of the Snowdrop clan. They helped him find his way home and since then he dreamed of becoming a warrior cat. When he turned 49 moons he finally ran away to the forest and luckily found Snowdrops clan border. He really seems to be a very lucky cat because he was excepted in clan very fast even though leader wasn't very keen on the idea.
---
Rainfreeze (Male) 12 moons
Warrior (Mentor - Clovestar)
Faithfull, Good kitsitter
As a kit was very calm in any situation he was in, because of that Clovestar took him as an apprentice. During his training his mentor gave him loyalty towards his clan. It's both good and bad trait, he seems to disregard anyone who doesn't do anything for the clan. This is why he seems to have strained relationship with Lightpaw. He also much like Clovestar is very cold towards other clans.
---
Downfeather (Female) 132 moons
Elder
Cold, Good fighter, Good teacher
One of those elders who scare kittens and apprentices even though they did nothing to scare them. Back in her better days she was the best warrior of the clan, right now she just scolds warriors for their mistakes in fighting. She tries to be more gentle towards apprentices and kits but still ends up scaring them.
---
Lightpaw (Female) 10 moons
Apprentice (Mentor - Palegrowl)
Insecure, Picky nest-builder, Avid play-fighter
Due to her mistake a lot of cats died a few leaf-bares ago. Because of that she became very disappointed in herself, even started to doubt if she really deserves to be a warrior or does she really want to become one. Her mentor doesn't really help her in this situation, which makes her think that she is to disappointed in her.
---
Rushkit (Male) 3 moons
Kit
Nervous
Medicine cat from another clan mistakenly diagnosed him with deadly illness so he was brought to the Snowdrops clans territory. He was found by Hushmurk and brought to clan. Because his mother liked to tell him scary stories he to became nervous like his mother.

more on our Latin chapter title! this fun little phrase refers obliquely to Death as the "I" of the idiom, and Arcadia (although a real geographical region in Greece) serves as a byword for past paradise. the phrase is a "memento mori," that is to say: remember you will die. (call me death-obsessed. I am. it's my birthright.) enjoy this life you have with whatever youth or health or brightness there may be, but know it will end. that there's meaning in it because it will end
it's worth a moment now to expound on the title of this work, "our lights in ashes", which comes from a line out of Sir Thomas Browne's "Hydriotaphia, or Urne-Buriall."
Since our longest Sunne sets at right descensions, and makes but winter arches, and therefore it cannot be long before we lie down in darknesse, and have our lights in ashes.
Urn Burial is largely an anthropological work from the 1600s about the discovery of buried funeral pots near Norwich, with discussion of other funerary practices or burial rites through history that were known at the time. the fifth section of it, however, is this exquisite and melancholy memento mori meditating on how we live with death and, essentially, the pointlessness of tombs or rituals such as these. the work is one I find enchanting, a morbid curio that is somehow comforting and haunting at the same time
this particular line refers to the brevity of life. even the longest lifetime is but a short winter's day in the scheme of things, compared with the long and deep catalogue of time. the reference to "lights in ashes" has a footnote from Browne about a Jewish funerary custom of lighting candles in a pot of ashes by the corpse. we will not live long and even time itself grows old, but there's something implied about the act of commemoration, even when Browne says it's pointless because no one will be remembered in the longer scale of time. because burial rites are, yes, for the dead, but they are also for the living. they are a way of processing and coming to terms with our grief. I've taken courses on death and dying and inevitably found myself surrounded by people who wish to know the secrets of death, as if we could somehow prepare ourselves for it or get around it, but we can only ever learn about what's on this side of the veil. it always went back to living grief. wanting our lives and the lives of those we've lost to mean something, whatever we believe as far as faith goes
this fic is about grief and wrestles with what comes after death. it's sort of ironic working with Supernatural, where our characters have died multiple times with zero consequences. death is something you can just walk off if you're a central character. and it makes killing off our faves emotionally pointless, because there's no serious consequence and there's this promised paradise of Heaven (reliving old memories) or getting thrown to Hell (which you can still be rescued from). life, of course, isn't like that. as far as I understand it, you only get one shot. so while the magic lets Cas come back from the Empty one more time, the characters are ultimately facing down the threat of losing someone forever, and having to decide what matters in the meantime. pursuing Cas? no question, that's priority number one. but Dean has to think beyond that, too. he's thinking about the life he wants once he has Cas back, and realises it's time to get a start on having that life now
whew, all that talk of death and meaning and I barely even made it to the latest character introduction! in this chapter, we meet our best skeleton friend, Todd. Death in Arcadia, or close to. he's not exactly the Grim Reaper, but he looks like one, and there's an element of the psychopomp to him, one who can travel between the borders of worlds, an ambassador between the living and the dead. he's not Death incarnate and has more to do with beginnings than endings as the Demiurge, the craftsman of the universe - though he's distinct as an artisan or architect rather than some Creator God of All Things. but I can't conceive of creation without Death, creation must also contain the seeds of its decay, making this form suitable for him, as well as having roots in tradition
this is a really pensive and morbid behind-the-scenes piece considering that this is literally the chapter where we introduce a talking skeleton. we are here having FUN, this fic is not taking itself THAT seriously and is also VERY hopeful despite all this weighing of life and death and time and eternity. I just have chronic refers-to-things syndrome and am past saving
et in arcadia ego (even in Arcadia, I am there)
the craftsman of the universe & the spanner in the works.
#our lights in ashes lecture series#this is a fun and normal destiel fic I swear#one more note on the title:#when I was deep-diving into Southern Gothic stories and films I read some William Styron#whose first novel was titled Lie Down in Darkness also borrowing from Browne#so it felt appropriate to finish the line#the first part of Brideshead Revisited is also titled et in Arcadia ego#and it was one of my favourite books as a teenager so this is also a tribute

Spock, Christine and T’Pring: Literally Just What’s Happened On Screen in SNW (So Far)
Because I feel like we ALL need a refresher from the sheer amount of Spock/shipping Discourse. Whether y’all thing he’s gay and comphet or just thinks he’s bi, actually is bi or straight. Whatever you ship, things have been both minimized and blown way out of proportion. Not favoring any ships or interpretations of Spock’s romantic preferences in gender or between these two characters.
Spock and Christine
Christine jokingly flirted with him and he didn’t pick up on it.
Spock clarified when Uhura joked that Chapel was his girlfriend.
Chapel smacks Spock upside the head when he’s a jerk to his fiancé. Spock listens to Christine’s relationship advice after breaking his promise to T’Pring. Which ultimately works!
They bonded over being lonely children with pets as their closest friends. Christine also finds out Spock is messing with people when he takes things too literally sometimes.
Spock punches a racist in T’Pring’s body, both for his own benefit and Chapel’s. He thanks her for the advice. After the fact Chapel seems to realize she’s catching feelings.
More relationship advice when Spock feels like T’Pring is going a little bit fast for him.
Pretends to have an affair with Chapel to save his fiancé’s reputation, the first and only time they have ever kissed.
Spock apologizes for the ruse, Chapel doesn’t want to really talk about it because Feelings, knows he’d never cheat on T’Pring.
Let’s Spock know it’s okay to be angry (without being smug). He hesitantly returns her hug when she comforts him after Hemmer’s funeral.
Chapel is completely devastated at Spock’s mutilated state in the Balance of Timeline.
Spock and T’Pring
T’Pring upgrades their childhood betrothal/bonding ritual to an engagement by proposing to him at dinner. (Making their arranged marriage just a liiiiittle less weird.)
Obviously prefers to kiss him the human way rather than the Vulcan way. (Haven’t really gotten their individual feeling about it.)
They were gonna have very logical engagement commemorative sex. Spock skips out on the very logical commerative engagement sex to go help space dad save space mom. Much to T’Pring’s chagrin, but she strives to be understanding.
Goes out of her way to make time for him when the crew goes on shore leave by bringing a coworker. Spock fails to uphold his end of the deal when the unexpected occurs. She fears Starfleet is means of him avoiding his Vulcan heritage, and by extension her.
Spending time in Spock’s shoes she learns how demanding and strange his job is. Spock learns the stresses and bonafide jackasses she has to deal with. Spock punches a racist, T’Pring finds that assessment logical.
They sleep together, possibly for the first time (since they missed out on logical engagement commemoration sex) after getting un-Freaky Friday’d, but some lessons remain yet to be learned.
T’Pring unnerves Spock a little bit by researching human sexuality without asking what he was comfortable with. Spock isn’t really sure if/how to set boundaries.
Spock and T’Pring get fake unengaged as part of Spock’s adultery ruse to thwart Angel. She is firm in the believe Spock would never actually cheat (as is Chapel).
T’Pring and Spock get re-engaged almost immediately afterward. Stonn (who she later falls in love with) is in play as a coworker, and Sybok is among the patients where she works.

Chapter Four: Epiphany
Epiphany (n.): a sudden insight or understanding of something.
Pairing: Various x female reader
Summary: You get an idea of what's going on… sort of.
Warnings: Explicit language.
Word count: 12.7k (holy shit my bad)
A/N: Uh… *taps mic* hello?? Is this book still relevant?? Did y'all miss me? Lmao, lot of shit happened the past months so I wasn't really able to focus on this story unfortunately. I hope this extra long chapter makes up for the wait! Plus this isn't proofread and I'll add the taglist later, I'm ready to post this chapter.
Happy reading!
Your first week of working at the Wangshu Inn was… uneventful, to say the least.
Other than being hectic trying to take care of guests because of Lantern Rite, nothing really surprising has happened. Which you suppose was a good thing.
After your little drinking incident that happened a few days ago…
—
“Perhaps…” Xiao started and you waited with a baited breath, nervous as to what he was going to say. “You are in need of some assistance, you imbecile.”
You looked at him with hazy and unfocused eyes. In your drunken stupor, you could only respond to him with an embarrassed laugh.
“Aha, yeah…” You trailed off awkwardly. Your eyes then began to droop dangerously low as a sudden wave of drowsiness had hit you. Xiao could only watch as you instantly passed out in his arms while letting out small snores. The adeptus let out an aggravated sigh as he picked up and carried you to your shared room, already regretting the decision of taking care of you.
—
It was safe to say you didn't see him for a day or two.
Today was Friday. One day before the Mingxiao Lantern was released. Goldet had decided to already pay you for your two weeks because of how hard you were working, which you tried to decline, but Goldet was as stubborn as you so you reluctantly accepted the money.
You were sweeping the reception area, bored out of your mind. You were done with all of your chores but you still wanted to work and be productive. You turn your head when you hear Goldet heave a sigh.
“Lantern Rite is nearly here, why don't we decorate the inn this year?” She asks you.
That line sounds familiar. You tilt your head, feigning confusion. “Lantern Rite? What's that?”
Goldet looks at you surprised. “Oh! Don't you know? On the first full moon of the first month each year, Liyue celebrates the Lantern Rite. It's a festival to commemorate the heroes from the past. After dark, the people release Xiao and Mingxiao Lanterns into the night sky.” She began explaining. “Ah... "May the flames of wisdom spread to all, and never be extinguished." This is the meaning of the lanterns. We believe they act as the beacons in the night, guiding bygone heroes back to their homeland.”
You gaze at her in wonder. “That sounds like a magnificent festival.” If I cried during the cutscene from the game, I wonder how much of a mess I would be if I was able to see it in person.
“Do you want to get involved in the Lantern Rite?” Goldet asks.
You nodded. “From the way you were talking about it, it sounds like a wonderful experience.”
Goldet clapped her hands excitedly. “That's great! The festive period leading up to the day itself is all part of the celebrations. If you're looking to take part, it's not too late.”
You thought for a moment. “Wait, so you're telling me that I don't have to work?” You asked Goldet.
She let out a small gasp as if she was shocked you would even suggest such a thing. “Oh Archons no! I would never ask you to work on a holiday such as Lantern Rite!” She exclaimed. You blink at her a few times, caught off guard by her slight outburst, and she laughed at your expression. “Haha... During this time, we pray to bring peace and ward off bad luck. Liyue locals call it "bidding farewell to the old and welcoming the new."
After hearing Goldet exclaim, Huai’an, her husband and the innkeeper, came to see what the commotion was. “Verr, are you alright? I heard you yell.” He asked with a concerned look.
Both you and Goldet turned to him. “I'm fine, dear. I was just explaining to [Name] the history behind Lantern Rite.” Goldet tells him. “Can you believe this will be her first time celebrating it?”
Huai’an gives you a look of surprise. “You've never experienced Lantern Rite?”
From the way they were talking about it, you almost felt embarrassed to say no. You hunch your shoulders and meekly shake your head at him.
Huai’an noticed your timid state. “Well isn't this exciting?” He quietly asked Goldet. He then turned to you. “Lantern Rite truly is a wonderful experience so I have no doubt that you'll enjoy it. Plus I can teach you how to make Xiao Lanterns!” He gives you an encouraging smile.
You give them both a wide eyed stare. “So… I'll be able to go to Lantern Rite? You don't need me for anything?”
Goldet shook her head while laughing. “No, you silly girl. Everybody will be in the city to release lanterns, so the inn won’t be very busy that night.” She gives you a soft smile. “Go and have fun.”
Shit I might just cry. You looked at Goldet teary eyed. “Boss!” You wept comically. “You're too kind, boss! Paying me in advance, giving me a roof over my head, letting me go to Lanter Rite! What did I ever do to have such a wonderful boss?” You cried out and glomped her into a hug. You were totally using your younger appearance as an advantage to act more childish because you would have never done this with any other boss.
Goldet laughed at you, reciprocating the hug. “And what did I do to deserve such a wonderful employee? You've been working so hard since you've started, it would be cruel of me not to let you go and enjoy the festival.” She tells you while swaying side to side. You've come to realize that Goldet was starting to become like the older sister you never had.
You both pull away from the hug. “Plus,” Goldet began, “I paid you early in advance so that you would be able to go shopping.” She gives you a cheeky smirk. “Can't have you wearing my clothes and your uniform the entire time you're here.”
You laugh at that. “You're right.” You grin at her and Huai'an. “Thank you both so much, for all that you've done for me.” You say sincerely.
“Of course [Name]. Now go have fun shopping.” She gestures to the balcony. “I think you've just about swept the floorboards down to splinters.”
You thank Goldet again and give her one last hug before running to your room to change. But as you were making your way up the stairs, Goldet called out to you. “Oh [Name]! Um… also,” she trailed off uncertainly.
You crinkle your eyebrows in confusion. “What's up?”
“If you're able to…” she cleared her throat. “... could you... try to convince Xiao to go with you?” She asked. She then let out a sigh. “We're not close, I wouldn't know how to ask him myself. But it seems that you've grown familiar with him.”
You look at her confused. You? Being close with Xiao? Yeah, the thought sounds nice but there's no way you have already ‘grown familiar’ with him in just a week. If anything he tolerates you at best since you've forcefully wormed your way into his life.
“Really?” You tilt your head. “Xiao doesn't seem to be one for crowds.” Sorry Aether, I might have to steal your idea. “I mean, I'll try and convince him but I can't make any promises.”
Goldet let out a resigned sigh. “I suppose you're right… Anyway! Just thought I'd mention it. You should get yourselves down to the harbor.”
She then shoos you off with a smile. “Get going! If you leave too late, the city will be crowded with people and you won't be able to make the most of it.”
You nod enthusiastically. “Yes ma’am! Happy Lantern Rite!” You wave to her and Huai'an.
They both wave back. “Happy Lantern Rite!”
—
You burst into your room, practically vibrating in excitement at the thought of having your own clothes. You hurriedly started to strip out of your uniform, unaware of the curious gaze that came from your current roommate.
Xiao was currently leaning against the railing on the balcony that accompanied the room and was wondering why you were in such a rush. As he turned to question you, he instantly turned back around upon seeing you reach behind yourself to start buttoning your dress, keeping his gaze on the scenery before him. Xiao let out a deep breath and rubbed his forehead in aggitaion. I just can't get used to her doing that.
However, when you start to undress, you notice Xiao quickly turn around out of the corner of your eyes. Halting your movements, you call out to the young adeptus as you buttoned your uniform back up. “Sorry Xiao! I didn't know you were there!” And you made your way to the bathroom.
Hearing you say his name made Xiao tense up in surprise and furrow his eyebrows. He was one hundred percent certain that you would have just kept undressing in the middle of the room, being the shameless mortal that you are, but you didn't. You instead moved to change in a different room. Huh… perhaps she does have some decency.
You quickly came out of the bathroom after that interaction, dressed in Goldet’s clothes for the last time. Seeing Xiao still out on the balcony, you walk up to his side while enjoying the warm breeze.
Xiao looked at you from the corner of his eyes, nearly seeing the excitement radiate off you. “Where are you going in such a rush?” He asked. You perk up when hearing his voice and swivel your head to him.
“Goldet is letting me go experience the festival!” You exclaimed excitedly. “Isn't that great?”
Xiao rolled his eyes and let out a scoff. “What's so great about releasing glowing trash into the sky only for it to return to the sea?”
You hummed. “Well, it's like any other tradition I suppose. It's not so much the actual festival or ritual that matters but more of the meaning behind it instead.” You shrug. “Plus it gives me an excuse to go shopping, you coming with?”
“No.”
You let out a groan and roll your eyes. Even though you were expecting it, you couldn't help but feel a little disheartened at his answer. “Why not?” You question. Although I already know why.
Xiao gave you a look. “I don't enjoy large crowds of people.”
You let out a sigh. “Fiiiiine,” you drawl out, “no means no so I guess I'll stop bothering you about it.”
Xiao raised an eyebrow. Really? She's going to quit just like that? He looked at you dubiously.
“For now.” You added mischievously with a smirk.
There it is. Xiao should have known better. He found out that you were too damn stubborn to give up easily pretty quickly. He shook his head at you. “Do you plan on leaving soon?” He changed the subject.
You nod. “I was going to leave as soon as I changed but then I saw you and just had to talk to you.”
That made Xiao scrunch his eyebrows. “You just had to talk to me? Why's that?”
You look towards him and give him a closed eyes smile. “Because I wanted too! Plus you're my friend and I enjoy your company.”
Xiao gave you a once over. A heavy feeling settled in his chest when you referred to him as a “friend”. That word left a bitter taste in his mouth. Everyone that he ever considered a friend had either died or left him in some way, and he never bothered to keep in contact with the current adepti, so the thought of you wanting to be in his company was worrying. Who knows how long it'll be until his karmic debt finally catches up to him…
And drags you along with him.
Xiao narrowed his eyes at you. You immediately took notice of his tense state and swallowed at the harsh glare he gave you. Uh oh. You let out an uncomfortable laugh. I don't think he liked that.
“What have I told you about getting close?” He asked harshly which caused you to curl in on yourself slightly.
“In the thousands of years that have passed, I have taken countless wraiths,” he began, “so if you want no trouble, it’s best you keep your distance from me.” After he finished scolding you he turned to leave, going to do who knows what. You watched as he seemingly stormed away. Slightly panicking that he was leaving because you had upset him, you steeled your nerves and asked the first thing that came to your head.
“But what if I want trouble?”
Your question made Xiao stop in his tracks. He turned to look at you confused. You wore an expression that was full of confidence that waived slightly.
“What if I don’t want to keep my distance away from you?” You continued. “You told me to “stay out of your way or all that awaits me is regret”, right?” You quickly stride over to him and jab a finger in his chest.
“Well guess what honey? That's a risk I'm willing to take.” You tell him fiercely. “I make my own choices and if I happen to make bad choices then I will deal with the consequences of those choices.” You place a hand on your chest and glare at him determinedly.
“You have no say in what I ultimately can and can't do, Xiao. Only. I. do.” You finally finish and place your hands on your hips defiantly.
Xiao looked at you blankly, trying to process what you had just said. When he finally did, he looked at you sternly. “Is that really what you want?”
“More than anything.” Your eyes bore deep into him, not wavering in the slightest in your decision. “You saved my life. The least I can do for you is offer you my company and assistance in any way for not letting me splatter all over the ground. Even if you don't want it.”
After a few heartbeats of silence, Xiao reluctantly gave in and sighed while crossing his arms. “You are the most troublesome human I've had the displeasure of knowing.”
You smiled triumphantly. “Glad we're on the same page!”
“Well I'll be heading off now. Do you need anything?” You ask as you start heading towards the door.
“Nothing in the city would be of use to an adeptus.” He responds. “Don't forget your blade.”
You promptly made a 180 turn and walked towards your nightstand where a little dagger laid. Since you weren't able to fully wield a bigger weapon and don't understand how they do the whole whooshy thing to make their weapons disappear, I think he called it “particulation” or something like that, Xiao insisted that you had some form of weapon to protect yourself with.
You grabbed the knife and clipped it parallel to your belt, allowing your shirt to conceal it. “I don't see the reason as to why I have to have this thing. Aren't the Millelith scattered along the road to Liyue?” You then turn to Xiao and tilt your head. “Plus I can just call you whenever I'm in trouble.” Though that would probably be a last resort for me.
“I don't trust those lousy soldiers.” Xiao huffed.
You raised your eyebrow and pursed your lips, nodding in agreement. “Yeah… I don't blame ya.”
“Anyways,” you shrug, “are you sure you don't want to come with me?”
Xiao only shook his head. “Best you go alone. There's no need for me to be there.”
You look at him with big doe eyes, trying to convince him to at least walk you to the harbor. “But the road from here to Liyue Harbor is long and full of dangers... I need someone to ensure my safety!” You exclaim, seemingly scared.
“That's why I gave you your blade.” The adeptus gave you a bored look upon his handsome face.
You then startled Xiao when you clapped your hands into a prayer position and brought them to your head. “O Vigilant Yaksha, please escort me safely to the city!” You cry out.
Xiao tensed at your sudden decloration. Normally, Xiao was used to other’s praying to him and hearing their wishes but when you did it, it made him feel… fidgety. You seemed to hold yourself in a high regard that you didn't let anyone have control over your actions, so it was odd to see you with your head bowed to him.
Xiao crossed his arms and looked away from you. “Quit that. There's no need for you to bow to me.”
You perked up, an excited gleam in your eyes. “So you'll come with me?”
“So be it. I won't be going into the city though.” He retorted.
You throw him a smile. “That's fine!” You straighten back up and open the door. “Come on, let's go!” You wave at him.
Xiao shook his head at your antics and began to follow you. And to think that she's a grown adult. “Wait.” He called out.
You stop in your tracks and look back at Xiao confused. “Huh? Why?”
Xiao walks up to your left side and grabs your bicep. You looked at him even more perplexed. What is he doing?
You then began to feel a strong gust of wind swirl around you and in an instant, darkness flooded your vision and a familiar feeling of nausea came over you. When you opened your eyes again, you saw the gates of Liyue below the hill you were on.
You put your hands on your knees, trying to keep from puking everywhere, as you begin to process that Xiao had just teleported you both to Liyue.
“Here we are.” Xiao released your arm.
“Would have been nice to know beforehand.” You groan. After feeling like you weren't going to empty your guts out, you look up and let out a small gasp.
In front of you stood an archway that led to the bridge that entered into the city. Looking beyond that, you could see the beautiful Chinese architecture of the buildings that filled Liyue Harbor with the magnificent decorations of Lantern Rite along the city. You gaped at the scene before you. Holy shit…
Xiao swiveled his head to give a hard stare. “Don't go and cause any trouble.” He warned you.
That caused you to let out a snort. “Yeah, yeah, sure. What are you, my dad?” You raised an eyebrow at him. “Why did we teleport?”
“So I wouldn't have to listen to talk my ear off all day.” He responded bluntly, causing you to let out an offended gasp. “And I told you,” he continued before you could tell him off. “so long as you are in Liyue, it is my duty to protect you and not let any harm come to you.” Xiao reiterated.
“Wow… you really are my dad. But that's a pretty big responsibility. You sure you can follow through with it?” You question.
“Are you questioning my abilities as an adeptus?” He asked gruffly. He then leaned in closer to your face. “I always take care of my duties.” Xiao finished while staring you straight in the eyes.
Your eyes widened in surprise at his declaration. The way he said that so firmly and confidently made your chest feel light before tightening, a familiar feeling of guilt settling in, causing you to look away and frown. Shit… not now.
Noticing the change in your demeanor, Xiao tilted his head confused. “What's wrong?”
Shaking your head to get rid of the self-deprecating thoughts that were forming, you look up at him with reassuring eyes. “It's nothing.” You tell him with a small smile.
Going back to your seemingly old self, you give Xiao a look. “Alrighty,” You turn towards him and hold out your pinkie, “pinky promise it then.”
He gave your pinky an inquisitive look. You furrow your eyebrows in confusion. “You have heard of a pinky promise before, right?”
Xiao squinted his eyes at you. “Is this another strange human gesture?”
“Eh, I wouldn't necessarily say it's strange. More endearing than anything.” You hold your dominant hand and make a “give it” gesture. “Give me your hand.”
Xiao hesitantly puts his hand in yours. You close it into a fist, only leaving out his pinky. You then bring your own pinky and lock it with his own. “Now say your promise again.” Xiao looked at you reluctantly. You let out a groan. “Come on dude, just do it please?” You say giving him your best puppy dog eyes.
Xiao sighed. “I promise, so long as you are in Liyue, that I will protect you and not let any harm come to you.” He looked at your still entwined pinkies. As he said this, a gentle breeze drifted between the two of as if it was sealing the promise between you and Xiao. Xiao watched as the wind suddenly made your hair flutter around you and the way the afternoon sun casted just the right amount of shadows on your features as you looked up at him. At the moment he didn't see the fifteen year old features that made up your current face but the mature, more sharper features that he saw from your most recent pictures and student ID.
“Now what?” Her hands are really warm.
You give him a smile. “That's it!” You then let go of his pinky, bringing your hand back to your side.
He looked at you confused. “That's it? Nothing special happens?”
“The special thing about pinky promises is that the person who broke the promise gets their pinky cut off by the other person who made the promise.” You say to him.
“That's quite gruesome for such a little act.” Humans confused him so much.
“I think it was more of a scare tactic for kiddos than anything really.” You shrug. You then started walking to the city. “I'll see you later Xiao!” You call out with a grin.
“Be careful.” He told you with a subtle nod, which made your smile somehow even brighter, before teleporting away. You then turned back around and practically skipped to Liyue.
—
You made your way down the hill and soon came upon the gate that led to the city. In front of it stood two guards, you couldn't bother to remember their names, who gave you a nice ‘welcome to Liyue Harbor’ as you walked past them. As you walked over the bridge you saw the Mingxiao Lantern standing tall in all its glory. Continuing on, you finally stepped foot in the city. With a look of amazement on your face, you spun around while trying to take in all of the decorations.
I can't believe I'm actually here… You let out a disbelieving laugh and began to feel your eyes become misty. Am I really tearing up right now? Oh my God I am. You shake your head trying to get your emotions in check. As you carry on walking further, the infamous somewhat creepy shipowner, Bolai spots you looking around like a lost puppy. Which you really weren't, you were just hypnotized by the decorations.
“Hello young lady!” He called out to you. You whipped your head towards him, slightly startled. When you realized who was talking, you made a small grimace. Oh… it's that really creepy guy that I don't like.
As he makes his way towards you, you put your guard up as you straighten your back. “Hello.”
Bolai raised an eyebrow as he stopped short of you. “What a strange accent. Are you perhaps foreign?” He questioned.
You furrow your eyebrows. I have an accent? “Something like that.” You reply with a shrug your shoulders nonchalantly and a ghost of a smile on your face. Ain't no way in hell are you talking about yourself to him.
Bolai narrowed his eyes at you suspiciously. How interesting. “Quite the mysterious one, you are. Tell me, young lady, where do you hail from? Fontaine? Sumeru?”
“Sure.” You tell him halfheartedly. Why the fuck is he grilling me so hard? I should probably give him some sort of answer so he'll leave me alone. “I traveled a lot so I never really had a distinctive place to call home.” You smoothly lied. Well… it wasn't entirely a lie.
Believing your little fib, Bolai’s face softens into a look of realization. A young girl like you didn't have a home growing up? Is that what you were hinting at?
Taking notice of the subtle pity look that crossed his gaze, you groan internally. Great, now he's going to think that I never had a home. Whoops!
“Well just know that you are always welcomed here in Liyue,” He reassured you, kinda. Your eyebrows raise slightly in surprise from that. “And if you ever need anything, and I mean anything, you can always come to me.” He finished ominously while giving you a smile that seemed a little too kind.
You leaned your torso away from the strange man and looked at him mildly creeped out, yet kept a polite smile on your face. “Duly noted… thanks.” Trailing off, you maneuvered your way around and sped walked away from Bolai. A fake shiver runs through your body. Ugh… just as creepy as I remember.
You continued further into the city. Your head was constantly moving from left to right, up and down, taking in the gorgeous decorations that littered the buildings and streets. Pulling out the Mora pouch that Goldet gave you, you recounted the money that you earned from your first week working. 60,500 Mora… that should be plenty right? You paused. Actually, isn't that a lot of money? This seems like a lot for just a week of work. After pondering a few moments, you shrug the thought off.
You made sure to visit almost all the food stalls that were on the harbor to experience Liyue’s cuisine authentically, as well as how to make Xiao lanterns. After doing all the activities you possibly could, you made your way up the gigantic steps that led to the main road of the city.
As you made it to the top, you put your hands on your knees trying to catch your breath. From being on your feet all day from working plus the training the Xiao puts you through, it's safe to say you were pretty damn tired. You're kidding me. I can not be this out of shape! You thought.
Heaving one last breath, you straighten back up. You looked out to see the streets bustling with people with a slight grimace on your face at the crowds of people. You absolutely hated crowds of people because being around them just completely drains your energy.
However, your curiosity and astonishment motivated you to move forward. As you walked through the city, you kept an eye out for any clothing shops because you needed your own clothes, since that's pretty much what you came here for.
Letting your gaze continue to search through the windows of various different shops, your eyes landed on an article of clothing that caught your attention. You quickly make your way to the store and opened the doors, causing a bell above the door to let out a little chime and alert the store owner and other shoppers of your presence.
“Welcome!” They called out. You give them a small wave in response as you make your way over to the outfit. Once you made it, you reached your hand out to feel the smooth silk of the fabric. It was a beautiful sleeveless, purple dress that reached the middle of your thighs. Around the skirt of the dress laid two longer pieces that were a darker purple and draped along the sides. The top of the dress was two different colors, the right being a dark purple that were the same color of the longer pieces while the left was a lighter purple that matched the skirt, and had a high collar and with an opening in the chest area. The dress also adorned what looked like a wide obi belt, but you weren't too sure. The whole dress was trimmed with gold accents and had gold swirls all along it. Next to the dress were a pair of low ankle boots that matched the color theme.
This was the one.
You yoink it off the rack and look around for the owner. When you found them, you asked if they had any dressing rooms to try on the dress to which they led you to one. You begin to strip as soon as the door closes behind you. I really hope it fits otherwise I'll be heart broken.
As you slipped the dress over your head you zipped up the side and fastened the button on the collar. When you turn around to face the mirror, your eyes widen in surprise. Holy shit… I've never had a dress fit me so well. The dress sat magnificently on you and accentuated your curves. However… You looked down at your chest to see that your bra from your universe was most definitely visible thanks to the opening that went from the collar of the dress to the belt. I'm gonna have to do something about that. Looking back in the mirror you took notice of your tattoos. Those as well. You thought for a moment. Plus I don't particularly like wearing dresses unless I have leggings or something underneath it.
You begin to take the dress off and put your other clothes back on. I wonder if they would have some kind of body suit or something… You put the dress back on the hanger but continue to hold on to it. Making your way back towards the racks of clothing you begin your search.
As you walk through the aisles of clothing, you notice a black full body suit hanging on one of the racks. Bingo! You thought with a smile. You made your way to the suit, but you failed to notice the other body that was backing up into you.
Feeling a sudden weight on your right side, you stumble a little due to the force. However, the person that ran into had lost their balance and started to fall to the ground. Eyes widening in surprise, you were quick to catch them by grabbing them under their arms. When you looked down to check on the person to see if they were okay, you felt your breath hitch.
Staring back at you startled are lavender colored eyes that were lined with dark, thick lashes that belong to the one and only Ganyu.
You begin to feel your cheeks grow warm as you look down at the gorgeous half-adeptus in your arms. Ohfuckohfuckohfu– “Are you okay?” You asked worriedly. When you looked up to see what could have caused her to trip, you were greeted with the sight of a man that looked a little too pleased with himself. As he looked away from Ganyu and up to you, you made sure to give him the coldest glare you could manage – which made the man’s smirk falter and back up just a little.
Fucker.
Ganyu blinked as she came back to her senses. “Y-yes! I'm alright.” She gives you an appreciative smile. “Thank you.”
You return her smile. “It's no problem.” As you help her upright, you lean closer to her ear. “Do you know this guy?” You whispered. She looks at you from the corner of her eye and subtly shakes her head no.
You looked up to the creep and gave him an ‘innocent’ smile. “Is everything alright here?”
Realizing the slight hostile undertone in your voice, the man gives you a strained look. “Y-yes, everything's fine!” He stuttered and gestured to Ganyu. “I just thought I'd give this young lady a little help.”
Your eyes flicker from her back to the man. “She looks to be just fine on her own. What does she need help with?”
The man’s opens then closes, trying to think of a good excuse. “I… uh… well, she-!” You cut the man off with a raised hand.
“I'm going to stop you there. You're making yourself look like a fool.” You chastise. “It's obvious what you're doing and you're clearly making her uncomfortable. I suggest you stop now before you keep digging your grave even deeper.”
Eyes blown open and mouth agape, the man stares at you in shock from your words. Was I really that obvious? The man thought. He felt himself cowering in on himself under the heavy gaze of the two girls.
“Well, whatever.” He scoffed while avoiding eye contact, seemingly trying to act tough. “It's not like she was actually attractive.” Yet he received no reaction from either of the girls, as they continued to stare. The man began to fidget from their silence, then quickly turned around and left the store.
Both you and Ganyu let out a sigh. “Thankfully, that's over.” You tilt your head at Ganyu. “Does that happen often?”
“No, that was the first time it has ever happened.” She reveals. She then bows toward you. “Thank you for helping me.” When Ganyu straightens back up, she places a hand on her chest while giving you a sweet smile. “My name is Ganyu, secretary of the Yuhai Pavilion.”
God, she's even more gorgeous in real life… You flush a little as you give her a small bow in return. “It's nice to meet you, Miss Ganyu. I'm [Name] [Last Name].”
“It's a pleasure to meet you as well, Miss [Last Name]. Again, I do apologize for bumping into you earlier.” She tells you.
You wave your hand dismissively. “Just call me [Name], please. Calling me by my last name makes me feel old.” You joke.
Ganyu tilts her head curiously at you. “If I may ask, how old are you?” She asks innocently.
You pause, processing her question. Damn it. “I'm fifteen.” You manage out. I really hate telling people that because then they'll treat me like a child…
“Really?” She wonders aloud. “You're quite mature for your age and you seemed to know exactly what to do in the situation that happened earlier…” She trailed off.
You freeze hearing that. Oh shit! Has she caught on already?! You let out an awkward laugh. “Yeah, mature…” You say while making a subtle face. Although Xiao would disagree otherwise.
“Anyways, thank you once again for helping me. Is there anything I can do for you in return?” Ganyu asks.
You bring a finger to your chin and hum in thought. “Actually there is.” While Ganyu waits patiently for your request, you give her a smile. “Would you know of any stores that would have a body suit?”
The beautiful half-adeptus perks up in response. “As a matter of fact, this store has the same ones that I wear. Let me show you.” She then beckons you to follow her.
You do so with a skip in your step.
—
You and Ganyu soon left the shop, with you now wearing your new outfit that screamed main character. Thankfully the body suit was able to cover all of your tattoos. As you continued through the city, making light conversations with Ganyu, you watched as two little boys, who looked to be around the age of ten, chased each other around the streets while laughing. You watched them with a small smile. While you didn't like kids, you didn't necessarily hate them either. Plus it was kind of your profession to be able to take care of them as well. But you definitely didn't want any kids. Well, right now at least.
You watched as they weaved through the legs of strangers, trying to avoid getting hit. However, as the one with light blue hair raised a hand out in order to tag the other little boy with darker blue hair and an asymmetrical cut, a man that wasn't paying attention to what was in front of him went to take a step and kneed the poor boy hard in the head. The pale blue haired boy went down in an instant.
You let out a snort and raised a hand to your mouth to hide that you were laughing. “That poor kid just ate shit.” You couldn't help but let out a few chuckles at the kids unfortunate situation. Ganyu looked at you confused from the corner of her eyes. I'm a horrible person.
“I'm so sorry, buddy! Are you okay?” The young man that hit the boy asked as he crouched down. He received no reply as the boy laid still. The man started to shake the boy, seemingly beginning to panic.
“Hey…” He called out once more. “Are you okay?” He shook the boy frantically. Still, he received no reply. “This isn't funny, kid. Wake up!”
You stopped laughing and straightened your posture as your ‘doctor mode’ kicked in. Now you were getting concerned. Thousands of scenarios ran through your mind as to why the kid wasn't getting up. Is he concussed? Is he faking it? What's going on?
The other little boy that was running away, turned around when he heard yelling. His orange eyes widened in fear. “Chongyun!” He cried out and began running back to his friend.
Realization dawned on you. Those kids were Xingqiu and Chongyun. Your feet moved before you even noticed it as you rushed towards Chongyun and the man. Ganyu jumped when you began running and raised a hand to stop you. “[Name], wait!” But you were too far away to hear her over the people walking around.
A crowd began to form around the two to see what was happening. This caused the young man to panic even more. He looked up to the crowd. “Is there a doctor here? Please, anyone!” He cried out desperately, yet no one made a move to help.
You shook your head at the crowd. I see that the Bystander Effect is still a thing here. Xingqiu made it to Chongyun before you did, then got to his knees as soon as he reached him and started tapping Chongyun on the shoulder. “Chongyun?” He asked. “Wake up ‘Yun!”
You finally made it to the crowd and started elbowing your way through. “Excuse me! I'm a doctor, please let me through!” You yell out to the pedestrians. They turned and looked at you skeptically. Your lip curled up into a sneer at the people's ignorance. I don't have time for this.
“I said MOVE!” You yell out startling them in the process and forcing them to move. “Thank you!” You say exasperatedly, not forgetting your manners apparently. You quickly made your way over to Chongyun and got to your knees behind his head, gently placing your hands on either of his cheeks in order to stabilize his neck, in case he had injured it. Xingqiu noticed you and looked at you with tears eyes, worried out of his mind for his friend.
You looked to the man who started this whole mess. “What's going on? What happened?” You asked hurriedly while you checked Chongyun’s pulse.
The man seemed to be in a daze as he answered. “This kid just came out of nowhere. I had accidentally hit him with my knee and now he's not waking up.” He explained shakily. “Then this other kid just now showed up.” He pointed to Xingqiu. He then looked at you confused. “Aren't you a little young to be a doctor?”
You look at the man and give him a glare. “I don't think that matters right now since I'm the only one who even bothered to step in and help the poor child.” You glared at the rest of the crowd when you finished which made them avoid eye contact with you. Murmurs started to float through the crowd. What was this girl doing? Who is she? She's clearly too young to be a doctor.
You ignore their not so quiet whispering and look over to Xingqiu, giving him a reassuring smile. “Hey buddy,” you started softly. “What's your name?”
The normally composed boy let out a sniffle. “Xingqiu.” He responded. “My friend, Chongyun, isn't opening his eyes! Can you help?” He asked pleadingly.
“Don't worry baby, I'm a doctor.” You tell him, the pet name subconsciously slipping out of habit from when you worked with kids. “I'm going to help him and make sure he's okay.” Seventy beats per minute. Normal heart rate. Nineteen breaths per minute. Normal respiratory rate. If he wakes up soon, it'll most likely be just a slight concussion. You mentally start going down the checklist for head trauma patients when Chongyun finally opens his eyes.
Quickly taking notice, you yell at the crowd. “Everyone back up please! The kid is waking up so give him some space!” The crowd immediately backs away. You look back down at the boy who was wincing from the sunlight.
“Hey honey,” You gently try to get his attention, “can you hear me?”
Chongyun opened his eyes fully and looked at you, confused before squinting from the sunlight. From his position on the ground and the way the sunlight was hitting his baby blue eyes, you were able to see that his pupils were equal in size. Good. No anisocoria, no serious brain damage.
“Wha…?” Chongyun groaned out. With your hands on his cheeks, you gently tapped them to shift his attention back to you.
“Hey honey, look at me.” You instructed. “What's your name?”
The boy paused for a moment. “Chongyun.” He answered.
Alright that's one question. “It's nice to meet you Chongyun.” You smile at him. “Chongyun, do you know how old you are?” You continued.
“I'm ten.” He responded a little quicker this time. You nodded your head at him. That's two.
“Do you know where you're at, Chongyun?” You made sure to keep saying his name so that he would focus on you.
After a moment of silence, he responded. “I'm in Liyue.” He then closed his eyes and let out another groan. “My head hurts.”
“I know, dear. One last question, okay?” You tell him. He nods. “Do you know what happened to you?”
He thought for a moment. “I was… I was chasing Xingqiu,” said boy perked up in response to his name, “we were playing tag. I almost caught him then it suddenly got dark.” He opened his eyes and looked at you. “Why did it go dark?”
You give him a look of reassurance. “Your noggin got hit pretty hard and you fell down. You were asleep for a few minutes but you'll be okay.” You tilt your head. That's the last question. A and O times 4. He's alert and aware. “Does your head still hurt?” You asked as you began to palpate his neck, feeling for any serious injuries. You removed your hands when you found none.
He nodded. “Do you feel pain anywhere else? How about your neck?” He shakes his head in response.
“Good. Do you feel like sitting up for me sweetie?” You ask. Chongyun slowly moves to sit upright with your help and you guide him to the curb to sit on so he was out of the road. Xingqiu crawled over to his friend to see how he was doing, with you reminding him to overwhelm Chongyun. As you look out towards the crowd, you see Ganyu, who was carrying a cup of what you assumed was water, make her way over to your little group. She hands you the cup, which you thank her profusely, and you give it to Chongyun.
“Drink it slowly.” You advise him. “I don't want you choking on me now that you're awake.” You tease gently while sending a subtle wink to Xingqiu, causing the young boy to giggle.
He gingerly takes the cup from your hand. “Thank you ma’am.”
“Thank you, ma’am!” Xingqiu tells you as well.
“It's not a problem.” You reassure both of them with a smile. As soon as they saw that Chongyun was okay, the crowd dispersed and continued what they were doing. However, not without whispering amongst themselves how seemingly a teenager knew exactly what to do when taking care of an injured child.
You continued to sit with the two boys to monitor Chongyun, in case something suddenly went awry. Ganyu stayed as well, astounded at the young girl before her.
“What you did was quite impressive Miss [Name]!” The half adeptus praised. “I didn't know you were so vast in medical knowledge, and at such a young age too.”
You let out a few chuckles. “Well you only just met me today Miss Ganyu.”
She then gives you a sheepish look. “I was surprised to see you help him so quickly,” she leans in closer to whisper to you, “given that you were laughing at him earlier.”
“Oh… yeah,” You let out an uncomfortable laugh. “As long as they're not seriously hurt or in any danger, kids getting hit or falling is hilarious to me.” You let out a wince. “Wow, that sounds awful.”
“Yet you didn't hesitate to help him as soon as you saw that something was wrong.” Ganyu pointed out.
You lifted your hand to pet Chongyun on the head. “Well I've always wanted to be able to put my life to good use and help people in some way, so what better way than this? Helping people in their times of need.” You give Ganyu a cheeky smirk. “I may act all tough but I'm actually a big softie.”
“I'm well aware of that now.” Ganyu chuckles.
As you visited with the half-adeptus and two young boys, you failed to notice a pair of red eyes gazing at you with a look of mischief.
—
After triple checking that Chongyun was okay and him constantly telling you that he was, you wave the boys goodbye who returned it in full. Ganyu then tells you that she should continue running errands for Lady Nigguang and you may or may not have freaked out a bit inside when you heard her name. Waving to the half adeptus as well, you continue to wander aimlessly through the city.
You soon found yourself at the Wanmin restaurant, chef Mao working swiftly in the kitchen. He soon brought out your order and after paying, you made your way to the south side wharf. As you make your way to the dock, you sit down on the edge and look out at the ocean before you while swinging your legs. You welcomed the smell of salt water and the ocean breeze that fluttered around you, yet it did nothing to quarrel your racing thoughts.
I can't believe I've already been in Teyvat for a week and still don't have a fucking clue as to how I got here in the first place. You slide your hands down your face and clasped them together in front of your mouth. And Xiao has been no help to me in that matter unfortunately. The guy still doesn't talk to me that much anyways. Plus training with him has been difficult as well. I've learned that he's a super strict teacher and I've only managed to construct only two Geo items with him this past week but that was only when I was extremely frustrated or upset, so I have no clue as to how I'm going to be able to properly control the element… or that ‘particulation’ thingy with the weapons as well.
You drop your head in your hands and let out a whine. This is all so confusing! I really wish someone or something just give me some fucking answers!
You then look up and run your hands through your hair. Turning your head to the left, you see the giant Mingxiao lantern that was ready to be released once it was dark enough. You let out a sigh and try to relax. I should probably start looking for a place to watch it when it releases tomorrow. You stand up and start walking back to Feiyan Slope. Soon you crossed over the little bridge that connects Chihu Rock and Feiyan Slope. You decided to stick closer to the buildings to try and stay away from the crowds.
However, as you were too preoccupied to not hit anybody, you didn't notice a hand reaching out from an alleyway until it was too late. You felt a harsh tug on your left arm which caused you to let out a yelp. You quickly caught your bearings and when you turned to slapped your assailant, you froze as you saw a pale face that looked to be thirteen years old inches from yours. Red eyes with strange, floral shaped pupils came with the face and was framed with dark hair that faded into red.
Holy… Hu Tao? You wondered. But she looks a lot younger? Younger than this “me” that's for sure.
You give her a confused smile. “Um… hello?” Am I just going to meet every character in Liyue today?
“You're the one Mr. Zhongli told me about!” She exclaims. “It's nice to meet you! My name is Hu Tao!”
You swore you felt your soul leave your body when you heard his name. ZHONGLI?! HE’S LOOKING FOR ME?! OH SHI-! You're cut from your thoughts when Hu Tao starts pulling you. “Hey! W-wait!”
“C’mon! Mr. Zhongli is waiting for you back at the funeral parlor. It seemed like he wasn't too happy with you so we shouldn't keep him waiting any longer!” She giggles.
Yup, I'm officially dead. Maybe now I can go back to my world and be normal again.
Soon the young girl brings you to the doors of the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. You gnawed on your lower lip. Fuck… I'm more nervous now than I was when I was taking the MCAT. Maybe because I'm meeting a FUCKING GOD?! You begin to slightly hyperventilate, the reality of the situation finally sitting in. FUCKFUCKFUCKFU-
You are once again snapped out of your internal freak out by Hu Tao pulling on your arm. The girl pushes the doors open while bringing you with her. The inside is about what you expected from a funeral parlor with coffins lining along the walls along with different types of shrines. After a few twists and turns, you and Hu Tao reach a very intricate door with a plate on it that says “Consultant: Zhongli”. You clench your jaw as you could practically feel the intense aura that radiated from him even through the door.
Without even knocking, Hu Tao busts through his door. “Mr. Zhongli! I found her! This is the girl you were looking for right?”
The wind gets knocked out of you upon finally seeing him in person and your knees about damn near buckle from underneath when you make eye contact with him. If you thought Xiao’s eyes were intense, then you don't even know how to describe Zhongli’s.
The Geo Archon narrowed his eyes towards you. “Indeed it is, Hu Tao.” His deep voice rumbled throughout the entire room and shook you to your core. “You may take your leave now.”
The young girl pouted. “Aw… and I wanted to see you scold her.”
A quick glance from the corner of his eyes was enough to make Hu Tao take the hint and leave, however not without whining on her way out.
As soon as Hu Tao was gone, Zhongli stood up and took large strides towards you, causing you to start panicking. Hu Tao, why did you have to leave me alone with an Archon?! Soon the man towered over you, forcing you to look up at him. The shadows that casted over his being due to him blocking out the overhead light made his striking amber eyes all the more intimidating. You felt like you were about to be pounced on like a mouse cornered by a barn cat.
Then Zhongli lowered his face closer to yours. “So you're the outlander who took my vision without permission.” He accuses. You feel your breath hitch in your throat and your palms beginning to clam up. You had never been more intimidated in your life and you have fought against people twice your size no problem before!
“Oh…! Um, t-that was me?” You stutter out. Your eyes widen when you realize just how fucking stupid you sounded.
Zhongli coolly looked at you. “Of course it was you. I knew that you were not of this world the moment you arrived in Liyue.” He tells you firmly while staring straight into your soul. “Now, do inform me on how you were able to acquire this power without a Vision granted from me?”
The silence was deafening in the room. You thought you were just about to faint until your experience from working under pressure in the emergency room decided to kick in and not fail you as you quickly composed yourself.
“In my defense,” you raise your hands. “it was completely out of my control.”
Zhongli raised an eyebrow, unconvinced.
You let out a sigh. “Here's what happened. A saw a Statue of Seven in Guili Plains, in all of its glory, and as soon as I was near it I felt a pulling sensation. Later that day I was extremely frustrated and all of a sudden a rock pillar just came out of the ground.”
Zhongli hummed in thought before finally standing back to his full height, allowing you to breathe again. He brought a hand to his chin and looked down in thought. “Interesting. I have not heard of such instances where that has ever happened, with me or any of the other Archons.” His eyes met yours again. “So what makes you special? So special that even the adeptus Xiao has decided to look after you?”
You couldn't help the exaggerated laugh that bubbled out of your throat. “Ha! I wish I knew, but your guess is as good as mine sweetheart.” You pause. “I also know that you're Morax too… if you haven't figured that out yet.” You finish meekly. WHAT THE FUCK AM I SAYING?!
The Geo Archon’s eyes widen at you. “How did you know that? Where exactly did you come from?” He interrogates.
You quickly explain to him the same thing that you told Xiao, that he was from a video game and that you were aware of what was to come in the future as well as how you somehow physically de-aged.
“Interesting.” Zhongli thought for a moment. “It appears that you come from a similar universe in which our’s exists but in a completely different manner.”
“How much of our universe do you know through this ''game”?” He questions.
“I know of some future events that will happen, but the lore of the story is still a complete mystery. We don't even know how long the main story of the game is.” You say.
Zhongli pondered. “I see. If you know what is to happen in the future, then it would be best to let things run their course and not intervene with it.”
“Yeah, the butterfly effect and shit like that.” Your eyebrows shoot up in surprise as you subconsciously swore. You quickly slap a hand over your mouth. “Sorry… it's a bad habit.” You apologize quietly.
Zhongli decided to ignore your mishap. “So you're aware of what could happen. And since you're already aware of my identity, I presume that you know that I go by Zhongli now?”
You nod your head. “Yes, I do.” You then realized that you haven't introduced yourself. You quickly bowed towards him. “My name is [Name] by the way! [Name] [Last Name].”
Zhongli nodded. “It's a pleasure to finally know the name of the outlander that took my Vision without consent.”
You make a face at his snarky comment. “Is it a pleasure though?” You muttered rhetorically.
“Let's continue with your situation.” Zhongli diverted the conversation back on track. He then looked towards you. “Perhaps if you tried to remember the events that happened to you before you came here, that may give us a better idea as to the reason why you're here.” He then gestures to one of the chairs in front of his desk. “Please have a seat. It will be easier for you to remember if you're comfortable.”
“I do remember being on a bridge but that's the only thing I know now.” Moving to sit down, you tuck your dress skirt underneath you and cross your legs, trying to look somewhat professional. You take a deep breath as you gather thoughts. What happened before coming here? What was I doing? You lean forward and rest your elbows on your knee while interlacing your hands, then put your forehead against them. You close your eyes and your eyebrow twitches into a furrow as you begin to concentrate. [e/c] eyes move rapidly behind eyelids as memories start to form.
“A hospital…” You began. “I was working a shift in the hospital.”
—
“Hi Miss Bradford!” You cheerily call out as you knock on the door. The old woman looked up from her magazine and smiled at you with dull blue eyes.
“Dr. [Last Name]. How are you doing sweetheart?” She asks softly. Miss Bradford was a quiet old lady in her seventies with salt and pepper hair and the brightest, most gorgeous blue eyes you had ever seen.
That was before she had started chemotherapy.
Miss Bradford was your most recent patient. You had treated her a few months ago when she came to your emergency room with intense chest pains. After taking multiple different CAT scans and MRIs, you and several other doctors had concluded her diagnosis as breast cancer. Although you admitted her to Oncology, she kept having complications when she had started chemotherapy; causing you to see her quite frequently.
Today was the day Miss Bradford would start her third round of chemo and you decided to bring her her favorite lunch before starting. Miss Bradford was hell bent on beating this cancer but after her most recent round she had started to lose her appetite. Which was never a good sign for a cancer patient.
“I'm doing well, thank you. And I thought I told you to call me [Name]?” You grab a chair and pull it up next to her bed.
She gives you a small smile. “But you worked so hard to earn the title of a doctor. I'm only giving you the respect you deserve.”
You shook your head playfully at the older woman. “How're you feeling today?”
She let out a sigh. “Tired, but better than yesterday. I'm ready to get this damn treatment over with.” She grumbled.
“That's good! Do you feel like eating today?” You ask.
She shook her head. “Not really but knowing you, you'll probably force me to eat anyways.” She looked at the plastic sack in your hand. “Whatcha got there?”
“Well hopefully this will bring your appetite back for today. It's your favorite!” You raise the bag higher and place it on her food tray. “Almond Tofu! I remember you telling me that it was your go to desert when you lived in Singapore, so I had one of my foreign exchange friends teach me how to make it.” You let out a dramatic sigh. “I can't tell you how many times I messed up baking this damn dessert.”
Miss Bradford looked at the sweet treat with tears in her eyes. “Oh, [Name]…” She let out a wet laugh. “You didn't have to do that.”
You smiled at the older woman. “I know I didn't have to, but I wanted to.”
She suddenly reaches over as quickly as all the tubes hooked up to her allowed her and brought you into a tight hug. You fretted over her before she cut you off.
“Thank you, [Name].” She whispered. You reciprocated her hug gently.
“You're welcome, Miss Bradford. Though I can't guarantee it'll be just like the real thing.” You playfully warned.
She let out a laugh as she pulled away from the hug. “I'm sure it will be wonderful.” She gives you a grateful smile. She then evenly separates the dessert and gives you half of it. You shook your hands no at the offer.
“No no, Miss Bradford, I made this for you so you don't have to share it with me.” You politely decline.
She glares at you but smiles. “I know I don't have to but I want to.” She quipped.
You gasp. “How dare you throw my own words back at me!”
“Just take the damn dessert, Dr. [Last Name].” She laughed out loud.
Letting out a sigh, you grab the plate from her and begin to eat with her. You both chatted for a couple of minutes after finishing before you were paged to be back down in the emergency room. You grabbed the plastic container the dessert was in and threw it away. As you moved the chair back to its proper place, you looked at Miss Bradford.
Reaching a hand out, you place it over her own. “Thank you for eating today, Miss Bradford.” You tell her sincerely. “I know it's getting hard but all of the nurses are telling me that you're doing great.”
“Just two more rounds and it will be over.” You encouraged her.
The older woman nods as she grasps your hand and gives it a tight squeeze. A nonverbal thank you.
“Do you need anything else before I leave?” You ask.
She shakes her head. “No, Dr. [Last Name]. I'm quite alright. Now go save some lives.” She lets go of your hand and shoos you off.
You roll your eyes teasingly. “I'll be back to check on you after your treatment. Try not to see me this time around!” You open the door and wave back at her. “Good luck! You got this!” You then swiftly leave the room and head back to your station.
As soon as you were gone, Miss Bradford’s smile dropped immediately. She laid her head back and lifelessly looked at the ceiling. Tears started to fall from her cobalt eyes as she thought about you and the gift you had made for her.
“I'm gonna miss you, [Name].” She whispered into the empty room.
—
After three days, you fortunately had the day off from working so you immediately went to go see Miss Bradford.
You soon made it to the familiar room. “Hi Miss Bradford! How do you feel-” You stop in your tracks upon seeing Miss Bradford lying in front of you. The older woman looked nothing like what you had seen three days prior. Her beautiful salt and pepper hair had begun to fall out and her skin looked like it was barely hanging onto her bones.
You quickly come back to reality. This is what chemo does. And elderly people tend to not survive the drug. You remind yourself.
You take a deep breath and walk towards the bed. “Miss Bradford?” You call out. “It's me, Dr. [Last Name].”
The woman slowly opened her eyes. Her bleary and glazed over eyes tiredly searched for the voice calling out to her before landing on your form. Her dull blue eyes light up in recognition.
“[Name].” She croaked out yet still gave you a smile.
You give a smile right back to her. “Hi Miss Bradford.” You greet softly. You squat down next to the bed so it was easier to make eye contact. “How're you feeling?”
She let out a tired sigh. “Like shit.”
You chuckled quietly before you both sat in silence for a few moments. You open your mouth to say something but the older woman beats you to it.
“I don't think I'm gonna make this round, sweetheart.”
You clench your jaw hearing her statement. “Don't say that.” You tell her firmly. “I thought you wanted to kick this cancer’s ass?”
The poor woman couldn't even manage a chuckle. “Don't all patients say that?” She asked. She looks past you and out the window. “I think it's my time. I can feel it.”
She then closed her eyes and gave you a grateful smile while reaching up to cup your cheek. “Thank you, [Name], for sticking by my side even when my own children didn't. I couldn't have asked for a more wonderful doctor to take care of me.”
You held the hand that was on your cheek and gave the older woman a sad smile as if to say “I'm sorry for not doing enough”, yet she seemed to understand what your smile conveyed as she began to caress your cheek as a means to console you.
“Keep saving lives, Dr. [Last Name].”
The steady flat note of a heart rate monitor tells you that your patient has finally passed away.
Her hand that was on your cheek laid flaccid on your own. You closed your eyes and let out a shaky sigh. After a few minutes of sitting in silence with your deceased patient, you press the nurse’s call button. You then place her hand next to her on the bed. Shortly after several nurses come into the room and begin to console you while covering Miss Bradford’s body with the sheet. You watched them as they wheeled her out of the room.
She told you to keep saving lives and you plan on doing just fucking that.
—
It was dark out when you finally left the hospital after you said your last goodbyes to Miss Bradford. The temperature had dropped significantly causing a shiver to run down your spine and goosebumps form on your arms.
You're not going to lie. Even though she told you that she was ready and already accepted her death, you couldn't help but feel like you failed her; so you were feeling pretty depressed. Everybody was so determined to get her healthy again, to go back to a somewhat normal life again. But it was never that easy.
You passed several buildings as you continued home. Soon you were passing your current town's local park when you suddenly stopped, a sudden feeling of anxiety had come out of nowhere. It felt like there were eyes on you, watching your every move. Your face sets into a hard glare to try and look intimidating. You turn around in a circle trying to find any suspicious people, yet you only found yourself alone in the street which unsettled you even more.
A sudden rustling causes you to whip your head to the right. Your eyes immediately lock onto a bright pair of golden ones that look at you from the tree line. Neither one of you refused to blink or look away, seeing who would back down first.
Your eyes widen when the other set of eyes seem to just dissipate into thin air. After a few moments of trying to process what the hell just happened, you shake your head.
I must be going insane. You thought. When you turned around to continue home, your gaze caught sight of something on the sidewalk. On the sidewalk was what looked like gold flecks of dust hovering in front of you. Being the completely logical person you were, you tried to kick the dust away from you. However doing so only caused more gold flecks to appear and soon a trail of them started to manifest that led into the forest where you saw the pair of eyes. You looked at the trail bewildered. What the actual fuck is going on? You drop your head and let out a defeated sigh.
“Yeah, I'm over this.” You mumble out loud. You walk through the trail dead set on going home and sleeping for the entire day tomorrow. Now you weren't going to lie, yes you do get upset whenever one of your patients pass away, but normally not this upset because that was part of your job; it's bound to happen. But Miss Bradford’s death seemed to be taking a bigger toll on you than you thought.
However, as you tried to walk through the trail it forcefully turned your body to walk to the forest. Your eyes widen as your adrenaline spikes and your fight or flight kicks in as you start thrashing around, trying to release its invisible hold on you.
“Hey, wait! Stop!” You cry out. You whip your head in all directions, trying to look for someone to help you. “Help! Anyone, please!” Yet all you received was silence from the empty street. While the gold dust continued to push you toward, you still tried to fight against it though you quickly began to falter thanks to the mentally and physically taxing day you just went through.
As if it had sense you were giving up, the trail abruptly stopped pushing you. For a split second you thought about running off again but decided against it. You watched as the trail formed and led even deeper into the forest where the bushes and trees were so thick that not even the bright moon that was above could illuminate it. Your eyes flicker down to the trail before going back to the forest then back down to the trail. You grimace at the trail as if you were saying “do I really have to?” to it.
All of a sudden, your head whips up to the tree line as you hear music softly playing from it. From your limited musical knowledge, it sounded like it was a harp or some type of string instrument. You feel your muscles relax and your heart slows its frantic pace as the soft melody coursed around you, like a warm comforting blanket that had just come out of the dryer, and a sense of peace had washed over you.
The logical side of your brain was screaming at you to not listen to it. To not be a dumbass and see where it was coming from. To run away as fast as you could while screaming for help, yet you already knew that wasn't going to work. But the hypnotic song that the harp-like instrument was playing kicked that side of your brain to the curb as it lured you into the forest.
Your feet moved before you even realized it and soon you began to bush limbs away. After a few minutes of trying to follow where the music was coming from, it started to get louder and then light filtered through the trees. You quickened your pace and pushed away the last of the trees, but froze in your place as the music suddenly stopped and at what you walked upon.
In front of you was nothing but a vast and endless bright blue sky. From above where the sun continued to glow brightly but seemed to be twice the size of what it was before, to below you where you could see a single hint of land anywhere. Clouds rolled by thanks to the gentle breeze that blew past you and tall pillars were littered throughout the area, some were even floating!
You turn back to the forest behind you with a confused expression before looking back at the open sky. Wasn't it just night before? And why is this… oddly familiar? Where have I seen this before? You wondered.
You jumped nearly ten feet in the air when you heard a noise at your feet. You look down to see individual slabs of concrete form a bridge several feet out in front of you and the gold trail resumes onto the bridge.
You stare at the bridge processing what just occurred. You could practically hear the Jeopardy theme song playing in the background. You sharply inhale and your eyes widen when finally realized why this was all familiar.
Motherfucking Genshin Impact! I thought I recognized this loading screen!
You place a hesitant foot on the bridge, expecting it to crumble but it stood sturdy. You take another step, then another, and after four steps the bridge begins to form out again. You keep walking as the bridge does so. You do this for a few moments, giggling to yourself about what is actually transpiring.
“I really have gone insane.” You laughed. “Ah, and my future was so promising.”
A loud boom from below cuts you off from your self deprecating thoughts. What the hell? You get down on your knees and crawl over the edge of the bridge to see a huge black rip in the sky.
“Outlanders,” A voice boomed out. “your journey ends here.”
And out stepped the Unknown God.
Oh shit. You gasp quietly as your heart rate accelerates at the sight of her. She's hotter in person. You looked around for the twins and quickly spotted them on a platform just below the Unknown God.
“Who’re you?” The queen herself, Lumine, calls out.
“The sustainer of heavenly principles.” The Unknown God summons a black cube in her hand. “The arrogation of mankind ends here.” She then creates a cube below the twins, forcing them to jump out of the way. They spin in the air and summon their, much cooler than the ones in the game, wind gliders with swords in hand.
The Unknown God sends multiple horrifying trails of cubes after the twins, forcing them to fly and twirl out of the way of them while causing the whole sky to rumble somehow. Soon the twins fly towards the Unknown God and collide with her creating a huge explosion.
The explosion caused the bridge you were on to shake due to the force. You grabbed on tighter to the ledge in hopes of keeping your balance, but an aftershock made you slip off from the edge. You let out a terrified scream as you suddenly began to fall.
Your scream caught the trio's attention and made them look at you. The twin’s faces morph into a shocked and horrified expression as you fall while the Unknown God’s eyes narrow in recognition. “There you are.” And sent cubes after you, yet you are completely immune to what's happening around you thanks to the wind that was blowing in your ears.
Lumine quickly yelled to her brother. “Aether, catch her!” She diverted her attention back to the god. “I'll take care of this!”
Aether jumped into action and quickly flew to you. He willed his wind gliders to move faster than the cubes and was soon on you. He then flies underneath you and catches you bridal style. You let out a loud “oof” as you roughly collided with something and opened your eyes, which had subconsciously closed when you fell, to see Aether flying away with you in his arms and away from the cubes.
Aether looks down to your wind blown form. “Are you okay?” He asks gently. How you could hear him over the wind, you didn't know, but you could only stare at him in shock, not actually believing that he was real.
Taking in your silence as being in shock from the fall, he flies higher in the air and turns to the Unknown God to see his twin getting sucked into the god’s cubes.
“Lumine!” He cried out. He looked between you and his sister before ultimately throwing you over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes while keeping a firm hold on your thighs. He zooms to the god at high speeds which catches you off guard.
“What the fuck?!” You screech. You were starting to get a little motion sickness from all of the sudden movements.
Aether dips behind the god and swings his sword at her which causes an even larger explosion than before. You let out a scream at the loud sound. You could feel Aether’s chest rising and falling rapidly under your legs due to him panting. You hear him gasp and you turn over his head to see what was happening, though you already knew.
However, the sight of the smoke from the explosion coming back and encasing Aether’s hand was more terrifying in real life than it was in the game.
“Hold on!” He orders then quickly readjusted you so that he had a hold of your waist. You wrap your arms around his shoulders and cover your face in his shoulder, bracing for any sort of pain. Soon your vision started to turn black, but before it covered it entirely you heard Aether scream out to the Unknown God.
“Wait, don't go! Give my sister back!”

A/N: Kazuha is now officially the ninth member of the harem. Also, y'all... Inazuma? Lord help me I want to add Gorou and Thoma to the harem as well.
Side note, for all of the male characters that have a "young adult" physique like Aether, Kazuha, Xiao, etc. they're taller than they are in the game, from 5'6"-5'8" (Xiao still being the shortest) while those with an "adult" are anywhere from 5'10-6'2", because I said so lol.

Part 1
Empire
On the empty, desolate street, only the night wind whistled past my ears.
MC: …
I walked forward carefully. Plates full of food had been placed similarly in front of the tightly-shut doors of the residences.
MC: … I hope nothing goes wrong.
It was the Wag Festival tonight.
According to the legends, the spirits who were venerated by their families would make their way towards the afterlife, while the spirits who had no one to remember them could only go around begging.
*Note: This festival did indeed exist in Ancient Egypt, and was dedicated to the death of Osiris.
Thus, kindly members of the populace would place offerings at their doorways, dedicated to the lonely dead. This was originally a holiday of commemoration, but things weren’t so peaceful recently…
Several people had disappeared strangely during the night. People said that terrible curses brought by the dead were spreading all over the town…

Discussion Hall
Not long ago, I had reported this issue to the pharaoh.
But as he sat upright in his high seat, he merely looked indifferently ahead, his mood hard to discern.
Pharaoh: A curse…
Pharaoh: As the respected oracle priestess of the dynasty, you only need to convey the will of the gods. Just observe for any other situational changes for now.
MC: But Pharaoh… more and more people keep disappearing these days, and the people are very panicked. The temple keeps receiving more prayers every day.
MC: If this really is the work of evil magic, the legends in the future will include a Wag Festival plagued by wandering spirits, and we’ll find ourselves with even more victims…
The pharaoh merely waved his hand at my suggestion that came from a spurt of courage.
Pharaoh: I have my own ways of dealing with this.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
Though the pharaoh had said that he had ways to deal with this, I couldn’t just sit around and watch.
As the oracle priestess, listening to the prayers of the people, maintaining order, and protecting the empire were my duties, to begin with.
Thus, I decided to act secretly at night.
MC: (Based on the rumours… the ones who disappeared before last appeared at night, on the streets…)
MC: …
I grasped tight at the amulet in my hands. The golden scarab beetle shone with a cold luster under the bright moonlight.
Feeling reinvigorated, I walked deeper into the street. Right then…
Unknown Man: Aaahhh—
MC: !!!
After freezing momentarily, I immediately sprinted towards the source of the shrieks.
Unknown Man: Save me! Someone save…
Suddenly, the cries for help stopped.
In the small, dusky alley, just a few steps away, a man was lying motionlessly on the floor.
MC: Are you alright?!
I rushed over, preparing to check his body for injuries. However…
MC: !!!
A frigid aura emanated from behind me. I instinctively stopped moving.
MC: (Wait… I think someone else is here…)
I looked towards the shadows in the corner.
MC: !!!
???: …
The moment our gazes met, the person stopped hiding and walked out slowly.
In the dead silence, I held my breath.
???: Sometimes, being too sharp isn’t a good thing.
The owner of the voice held a dagger as he looked from a distance at me.
Half of his face had been covered by a black jackal mask, and the slender eye slits were full of a crimson colour.
As I faced this person who was dressed strikingly like an assassin, I couldn’t help feeling the slightest bit of apprehension and surprise.
MC: A person…
MC: (Wait…)
I thought back on those disappearance rumours from before, and suddenly came up with a bold guess after connecting them to the scene before my eyes…
MC: (Does this mean that he’s the one behind all the disappearances in the city…)
???: Piece of advice: you shouldn’t be zoning out at a time like this.
Without giving me a chance to think more, the person in front of me spoke again.
He glanced at the talisman in my hand. His voice was relaxed, as if this were a normal, everyday conversation.
???: … So you believe in the gods, huh.
???: Too bad, though – it doesn’t seem like the gods will be protecting you.
I hadn’t even reacted when I saw him close in on me rapidly.
???: …
Time seemed to stagnate.
At a close distance, he muttered ponderously to himself, and the dagger he was holding stopped a few centimetres away.
???: You’re…
He seemed to be staring at me through the slits of the mask.
I could smell a faint aroma, and despite the urgent situation, it left me unexpectedly mesmerized.
MC: (Is this some sort of perfume’s scent? I think it’s coming from him…)
After I calmed down, I lifted my head and met his gaze.
MC: … It sounds like you recognize me?
He paused for a moment, then spoke.
???: Based on your appearance… if I’m not mistaken, you must be the oracle priestess of Ayana Temple?
MC: I am…
???: If so, then it can’t be helped.
He retracted his dagger, seeming to have given up.
I let out a long sigh, relieved from being released from my dangerous situation. But when I saw him walk towards the corner where the collapsed man was, I grew agitated again.
>Stay and observe >Try to save the man
MC: (I shouldn’t do anything foolish if I haven’t confirmed that it’s safe.)
Bearing this thought in mind, I carefully tried to talk to him.
MC: What are you planning to do with him? Is he still… alive?
???: Worry about yourself before concerning yourself with others.
MC: … What do you mean?
???: You’re more likely to run into someone wicked than a dead spirit, wandering around town in the middle of the night.
???: On your return, make sure to watch your back.
>Stay and observe >Try to save the man
MC: (Maybe he still can be saved…)
The moment he turned around, I silently picked up a wooden baton used for the vendors’ stands.
After making up my mind, I closed in and brought it down on his head-
MC: !!!
He hadn’t turned around, yet he was able to precisely grab the baton and yank it forward, ripping it out of my hands.
???: I think it’s best that you do not worry about saving others while your hands are full.
???: Otherwise, you might not even be able to return yourself.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
I couldn’t help shivering from his words.
MC: …
???: Why aren’t you talking?
???: You’ve probably already guessed, but…
???: I hope you’ll be able to keep your mouth shut when you get back, just like now.
I stared at him wordlessly without reacting. He paid no attention to that, instead glancing back at me meaningfully.
???: This is for your own good, too. After all, no one will listen to you, no matter who you tell.
MC: Why…
He hoisted up the man before I’d even finished speaking, walking into the depths of the alley. Even my doubts were taken into the soundless darkness.
After, I attempted holding an audience with the pharaoh again… But each time, he avoided me with various excuses. Even my submitted documentation received no response.
I also secretly ordered people to investigate the masked man, but due to us lacking in manpower, we never received any results.
At the same time, more and more people kept disappearing, and the people’s panic grew worse every day…

Ayana Temple
Person A: When will the curse issue be solved?! Are you just going to watch as we all die off?!
Person B: Exactly! A neighbour of mine disappeared in the past few days… where’s the high priestess?! I want to see the high priestess!
On the day of prayer, it was even more chaotic than I had imagined on the temple courtyards.
The people who had come to pray had crowded together, such that the temple bodyguards had to block them to maintain some control over the riot.
MC: People of Ayana Empire…
Person A: It’s the high priestess!
As if they were grabbing onto their final chance of salvation, the jostling crowd all swarmed in around me after I entered the courtyard.
Right when the guards were on the verge of being broken through, a familiar voice suddenly came from above.
???: Chief Guard, how long are you planning to watch this go on?
Part 2
Ayana Temple
???: Chief Guard, how long are you planning to watch this go on?
The originally panicky crowd stopped their steps forward for a moment.
Like them, I turned my gaze to the heights of the building behind us. Though the owner of the voice was hidden, there was no way I’d mistaken who it was.
MC: (The one from that night…)
He had just spoken when a troop of fully-armed soldiers burst into the temple courtyard.
Based on their clothing, they were the Pharaoh’s trusted Imperial Army.
Chief Guard: Silence!
After the commander handled the crowd control, the chief guard in front held up the documents in his hand and stood in the center.
Chief Guard: People of the Empire, fear not. I speak on the Pharaoh’s behalf with this oracle-
Chief Guard: “In seven days, I shall personally preside over a prayer ritual, where all curses will be broken.”
MC: (Breaking the curses…)
When the pharaoh said that he had ways to deal with this, was he talking about this prayer ritual?
But based on what I had seen that night, the man who’d disappeared had been attacked and taken away, and the curses didn’t exist at all…
Right when I was about to refute these words, the chief guard swept his gaze over, his expression solemn.
Chief Guard: The high priestess will also play a major role in this ritual.
Chief Guard: So, please come with us.
MC: ???
Person A: That’s great! If the high priestess is there, everything will be fine…
Person B: Indeed, the high priestess is sure to protect us and Ayana Empire!
MC: (… I haven’t heard about this at all.)
Confused, I looked at the crowd, jubilant as they were in their relief.
Seeing my motionlessness, the chief guard ordered his men to come “help me along”.
MC: What are you doing?!
I instinctively retreated one step.
Simultaneously, a dagger flew past the tips of their ears, embedding itself on the ground.
???: No need to trouble yourselves. Leave that to me.
The chief guard lifted his gaze towards the building behind us, looking at the corner that was blocked by a colonnade.
After a several-minute stalemate, he finally gave in, gesturing for me to head to the high platform.
Chief Guard: Please make your way over then, high priestess.
MC: Understood…
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
The temple was built on the heights of the empire, as the place that was closest to the sky and the sun god.
Birds – the messengers of the gods – flew under the blazing sun, distracting me from the silhouette hidden in the shadows.
MC: What exactly are you aiming for…
The pitch-black jackal mask had been casually placed on the ground. The assassin who’d taken off his disguise stared off into the distance against the wall, looking utterly unperturbed by my arrival.
He looked calmly at me, even smiling a bit.
???: My aim is very simple. Per the pharaoh’s orders, I am to bring the high priestess to the desert shrine and carry out the final preparations for the ritual.
???: For convenience, just call me Luke.
MC: Luke?
I looked carefully over his face.
In stark contrast to the fiendish appearance I had imagined, his features were clean and delicate, his eyes clear and captivating.
Luke: Are you staring at me because you think I look weird?
MC: No, you just look a bit different from what I imagined.
He frowned slightly in response.
Luke: Never relax your guard just because you’ve judged a book by its cover.
Luke: If I wanted to, I could have you decapitated and scattered right now for seeing my true face.
He waved the dagger in his hand slightly. I met his gaze, refusing to concede.
MC: You wouldn’t dare.
MC: If you really do obey the pharaoh, you wouldn’t do anything to me – just like that night.
Luke: …
Unlike the confrontation he had earlier with the chief guard, this time, he quickly ceded, then smiled again.
Luke: Yep, you’re right. I wouldn’t actually do anything to you.
Luke: It’s just that it’s rare for me to get looked down on, so I wanted to mess with you a little…
Luke stood up and walked towards the temple interior.
He walked slowly up to me, but due to the presence of the Imperial Army, the guards outside the temple didn’t dare do anything foolish to him.
Luke: High priestess, do you know why I told you that no one would listen if you told them about the truth of the “curse”?
MC: …
Luke: Because he knows better than anyone where those who have gone missing are…
Luke: Adorning them with charges based on nothing and having them executed were his orders, to begin with.
MC: No way… the pharaoh has no reason to do this sort of thing.
Luke: Is that what you think?
Luke shook his head, in apparent exasperation at my stubbornness.
But I couldn’t understand at all, because my impression of the pharaoh was that he was a benevolent person, one who cared for the people.
Ordering the execution of innocent civilians, causing panic-inducing rumours… it really was hard for me to believe if I only heard one side of the story.
MC: I must go see the pharaoh.
Luke: He won’t see you.
MC: Why?
Luke: …
His only response to my direct questioning was silence. Thus, I could only change my question.
MC: Based on the oracle just now, the pharaoh will be personally presiding over the ritual in seven days, right?
Luke: Correct.
MC: Will the so-called “curses” really disappear after the ritual?
Luke: Yes.
MC: If so, I’ll personally verify all this on the day of the ritual with the pharaoh.
Luke: You mean, you’re still willing to go with me under these suspicious circumstances?
Luke frowned slightly, his mood hard to discern.
Though I knew nothing of the ceremony, I could only nod at him in consideration of the situation’s severity.
MC: The people are all looking forward to the ceremony.
MC: Regardless of the curse’s veracity, this is the only way to contain the panic in the town…
MC: Now that the pharaoh’s oracle is out, no one will believe me if I say what I saw without evidence.
MC: Sometimes, the truth won’t be able to change anything, and as the empire’s priestess, I have to prioritize how the people feel.
Luke sighed after he heard me.
Luke: Can’t be helped, then.
Right then, a maidservant came in with perfect timing. She placed a cup of fine wine on the table.
Maidservant: High priestess, please have the sacrament wine.
Luke: Wine?
MC: Sacrament wine is part of our typical rites. The pharaoh says that we need this to reach a higher level of consciousness and build a connection with the gods.
Luke: The pharaoh again.
He muttered in discontent, then poured the precious wine on the ground when the maidservant left.
MC: You…!
Luke: These sorts of things are bad for you. Plus, you’re better off not drinking wine during a critical time like this.
Luke: I haven’t prepared any fancy carriage for you, after all, so you’ll have to walk with me to the shrine.
MC: W-walk?
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
The market in the afternoon was as bustling as ever, with the sounds of hawking mixed in with the joyful laughs of children, creating a ruckus that was completely different from the night.
I followed behind Xia Yan, hurriedly replying to the enthusiastic greetings of the people.
Person A: The high priestess! I can’t believe I was able to see the high priestess in the market!
Person B: Hello, priestess! Hope you have a great day…
Facing the surprised reactions from the crowd, Luke looked back at me curiously.
Luke: Have you never come out before?
MC: Yes… These are the temple rules. Aside from the necessary trips during typical sacrificial rites, that time on the Wag Festival was my first.
Luke: No wonder.
He smiled, looking up at the circling birds in the sky, and suddenly asked me a question.
Luke: Do you know why we worship the birds?
MC: Because they can fly freely to the world of the gods?
Luke: Yes. So, high priestess, the one who boasts the title of gods’ messenger – why do you shut yourself up in a little cage?
Luke: To me, you should be able to go to more, greater places without any worries.
Luke looked seriously at me, his voice earnest.
He was smiling slightly, so unlike the coldness he displayed on our first meeting…
His eyes reflected the vast sky behind me, seeming to contain so many things I had never considered before.
MC: ???
His expression left me somewhat confounded…
MC: (Why is he asking this…)
MC: (I don’t think anyone has ever asked me this…)
During my moment of distraction, my stomach, which hadn’t received food ever since the morning, made its complaint.
MC: …
Luke: Haha, can’t be helped – in reward for walking so far with me, I’ll treat you to something.
A few minutes later, Luke held out some biscuit-like things placed on leaves in front of me.
Luke: Here, try them. They’re freshly-fried bean balls.
MC: Huh?
I looked bewilderedly at the fried things in front of me.
The food and drink in the temple had always been light, so it was my first time dealing with food like this.
Meanwhile, he seemed to have misunderstood what I meant…
Luke: Sorry, I almost forgot.
Luke: As the high priestess, you probably had maidservants helping you with your clothes and food in the temple…
Luke: But I don’t have this sort of experience, so could you just put up with it?
Luke stuck a toothpick in the fried bean ball and carefully held it up in front of my mouth.
MC: It’s not because of this…
Luke: Is it because of the rules again?
Luke: This isn’t the temple, so doing some improper things should be alright…
Luke: If the gods truly were to lay blame onto someone, then don’t I deserve even more blame for this sin, as the one who encouraged you to do this?
He took on all the guilt, candidly stating a bold and reckless proposal.
MC: (Blame for this sin…)
Merely tasting a snack in the city didn’t seem to be bad enough to be called a “sin”.
MC: … The gods wouldn’t be that petty.
Luke: If so, then it’s fine.
MC: …
I stared up close into those perpetually unfathomable eyes, and vaguely felt for a moment that he meant something else.
Luke: … Here, open your mouth.
A tempting aroma wafted from the food near my mouth. I couldn’t help gulping as he patiently guided me.
Finally, I couldn’t resist taking a bite.
MC: Whoa… it’s really delicious!
The bean-made food and the vegetables had been mixed in with a perfectly-adjusted spice, and was fragrant and crispy from frying.
Luke: See, I knew you’d like it.
Luke: …Slow down, don’t burn yourself.
As he looked at me amusedly, I took several bites.
MC: (So delicious…)
MC: ???
Strangely, though this was the first time I’d tried this, the taste in my mouth made me feel faintly wistful…
Part 3
Outer Edges of Empire
Under Luke’s lead, we made our intermittently-halting trip onwards, approaching the shrine outside the city.
MC: (That should be our target destination…)
My field of vision gradually expanded. I could faintly see the ancient buildings towering amid the boundless golden sand.
Unlike the market, there were mostly caravans outside the city.
Apparently, their wares were specialties from various different towns – some were even foreign goods.
MC: It smells really nice…
I looked all around as I walked, stopping when I stepped by a little mobile stand.
MC: …
Luke: What’s the matter?
Luke keenly noticed that I’d stopped and followed my gaze.
Luke: Go check it out if you’re interested.
MC: Huh? No, it’s already getting late, so we should probably head on our way instead…
Luke: It’s fine – we’re almost there anyways.
Luke: You probably won’t be getting much of these chances after the ritual, so how about you take it as a chance to make a memory?
He walked up to the stand as he spoke, and I rushed to catch up.
Exquisite incense boxes of various kinds of workmanship were piled densely on the wooden car, glittering so vividly under the sun that they looked like they’d been divinely blessed.
Stand Owner: Whoa, the high priestess, aren’t you! I just heard that you’d appeared in the market for once, but I sure didn’t expect to run into you myself.
Stand Owner: Go ahead, look to your heart’s content. Tell me if there’s a scent that you prefer – I’ll help you pick it out!
In consideration of this rarely-experienced kindness, I looked down at the dazzling lineup of incense boxes.
MC: A scent I prefer…
The rites in the temple were specific and set, and all of the incenses used had never once changed in years.
Over time, I didn’t bother with considering my own “preferences”…
If I had to come up with something now, the only one I could remember, the freshest memory of a scent that I had was…
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
[Flashback]
He seemed to be staring at me through the slits of his mask.
I could smell a faint aroma, and despite the urgent situation, it left me unexpectedly mesmerized.
MC: (Is this some sort of perfume’s scent? I think it’s coming from him…)
[Flashback end]
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
But thanks to how serious the situation had been back then, I couldn’t really remember it all too well anymore.
Both the elegant scent of water lilies and the rich fragrance of roses didn’t seem to quite match up with it.
Luke: What’s the matter? What are you thinking about now?
Apparently having noticed my hesitation, Luke rushed to comfort me.
Luke: Don’t worry, just pick as you wish. No need to worry about anything.
MC: Okay…
I nodded in response.
MC: (But… how do I figure out what that scent was…)
>Get close and sniff >Ask him directly
MC: Excuse me, I just want to confirm…
I grabbed his wrist and took a light sniff of it.
Luke: !!!
Luke: W-what are you doing…
For once, he looked at a loss from my sudden actions.
MC: I don’t know what I like, so I want to buy an incense that’s like the scent on your body.
Luke: … No, stop smelling it. What’s so good about being like me?
He anxiously withdrew his hand, covering his face with his arm to hide his expression.
>Get close and sniff >Ask him directly
MC: Then, boss, could I get an incense that smells like the scent on his body?
Luke: The scent on my body?
Luke quickly recovered from his surprise, looking at me seriously before the stand owner could speak.
Luke: No. You can’t just say something like that on whim…
MC: Why?
Luke: … No reason.
Luke: Stop staring at me…
He retreated away from me, a slight blush appearing on his face as he dodged my gaze.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
Seeing him look so unexpectedly helpless, I couldn’t help feeling surprised, and immediately apologized with my head lowered.
MC: I’m sorry…
Luke: You don’t need to apologize. It’s got nothing to do with you…
He withdrew several steps as he spoke, increasing the distance between us.
Seeing how awkward things had become, the shop owner helpfully started to market his wares to me.
Stand Owner: If you aren’t sure which to get, high priestess, how about trying this incense called Kyphi?
Stand Owner: It uses sixteen ingredients, including cinnamon and muskroot, and is made after soaking it in high-quality honey and grape wine…
MC: Kyphi?
Stand Owner: Indeed. This name even has a special meaning – “welcome to a place beside the gods”.
Stand Owner: This scent best suits the people of Ayana, who live in the state protected by the pharaoh, the incarnation of the gods.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
Welcome to a place beside the gods…
With the incense called Kyphi in my hands, I slowly walked with Luke through the desert, towards those majestic ruins.
MC: (Everyone says that Ayana Empire is protected by the gods…)
MC: (But if Luke is telling the truth, the pharaoh had those missing people executed…)
MC: (As the incarnation of the gods, is the pharaoh truly protecting this place?)
MC: !!!
This sudden, absurd thought left me somewhat astonished.
But before I could think further, I heard a shout approaching behind us-
Worn-out Man: People… people over there, wait…
Worn-out Man: Could… could you give me some water… I’m in a hurry, and I can’t hold on anymore…
The owner of the voice was a man in ragged clothes, covered in sand. His skin had been severely tanned after years spent working under the sun.
He staggered up to us, looking like he was on the verge of collapsing.
MC: Are you alright?!
I was almost about to run up and support him when Luke held me back.
Luke: Don’t. I’ll deal with it.
MC: Huh?
Luke looked the man up and down. After pausing for several seconds, he threw over the water pouch he was holding.
Luke: Here.
Worn-out Man: Th-thank you!
The man took several loud gulps of water, finally calming down somewhat.
Luke remained on guard the whole time, watching the man’s movements closely.
Doubts gradually popped up in my head as I followed his gaze.
MC: (Why is he alone in the desert… and why does he look so worn-out…)
MC: (Is he a refugee? But… there haven’t been any battles under this dynasty for a long while. We should be in the middle of an age of prosperity…)
Right as I went over my suspicions, I heard Luke’s voice again, sounding pressing this time.
Luke: Are you almost done?
Worn-out Man: Yes, th-thank you both! I’ll be off…
Luke: … Hold on.
Luke frigidly called that man to a halt as he was about to make his hasty departure.
The moment he took his water pouch, he yanked at the man’s wrist and pressed him onto the ground.
Worn-out Man: Aaaaahhh- w-what are you doing?!
Luke: Rather than leaving, shouldn’t you be returning to where you should be?
Luke: Based on your clothes and condition, you must be a construction worker for the pyramids. Why are you here?
MC: …Worker?
Worn-out Man: No! I won’t go back… I won’t go back! I want to go home!
Worn-out Man: I beg you, great sun god, please save me!
As the man prayed to the sun, I looked towards the edges of the desert that I hadn’t noticed before.
Several unfinished pyramids rose from the ground on the horizon. Many antlike, black dots surrounded the area, toting stone blocks around.
A shiver ran down my back under the blazing sun.
MC: Can’t we let him go?
Luke: He’ll get caught soon even if we do.
Luke: He’s better off submitting obediently – he’ll still be able to live, at least.
Just as he said, supervisors on their way to catch him soon came running over.
After a respectful salute to Luke, they immediately dragged the man roughly back to the barren-looking pyramids.
MC: Does the will of the pharaoh also include building pyramids all over the place…
These were a display of the pharaoh’s power and the structure that would connect him to the heavens for immortality after he passed away. It should have been an incomparably holy thing.
And yet, I couldn’t help shivering as I looked at them.
Luke: They’re living people, yet they’re busy all day with death-related work. High priestess, don’t you find this quite ironic?
MC: …
Luke looked seriously at me in silence.
MC: I…
Before I could respond, he changed the topic, his expression changing along with it.
Luke: Remember, this is a reverse example.
MC: ???
Luke: … Before escaping, make sure to deal with all the threats behind you, or else all of your efforts will go up in smoke eventually.
MC: Why are you telling me this?
Luke: To make sure you don’t waste your efforts in the future, of course.
I didn’t understand what he meant at this critical moment.
Only as we gradually approached the desert shrine did I gain a faint understanding of his meaning.
Part 4
Desert Shrine
Luke: Have something to eat.
Luke closed the stone door shut and walked slowly up to me, leaned down, and smiled resignedly.
Warmth still emanated from the dish full of fried bean balls, but I had no appetite whatsoever.
MC: …
One day had already passed since we entered this place.
No matter how much I was unwilling to believe it all, I gradually found myself noticing lots of abnormalities. This location, where the prayer ritual was to be, wasn’t situated in the heights closest to the gods. Rather, it was buried deep underground… The interior of the dark shrine was cold and hollow and had no sacrificial tools whatsoever – only weak candlelights that flickered discomfortingly.
I looked at Luke, recalling what he had told me when we had first entered this desert shrine again-
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
[Flashback]
Luke: Here’s our destination.
MC: Destination… so this is where the prayer ritual will be held?
Luke: Yes. Rest first and get used to your surroundings. I’ve prepared all your daily necessities for the next few days…
Luke: I’ll tell you everything about the ritual after.
Luke: Because you’ll be completely severed from the outside world from now on, starting from when you enter this place.
[Flashback end]
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
MC: Is this ritual really a “curse”-dispelling prayer ritual?
Luke: Based on the results, you could say that.
Luke held up the container he’d just brought over, set down a cup, and poured a cup of water for me.
Luke: But its true purpose isn’t that simple.
Luke: The pharaoh wants to use this ritual to win over the people and solidify his authority.
MC: …
I received the cup of water, setting it aside on a stone table, as I didn’t feel thirsty at all.
MC: What do you mean by solidify his authority?
Luke: The current pharaoh did not receive his position through inheritance, like it would be usually. The process that this happened in is pretty complex…
Luke: Such that even though the people trust that the pharaoh is the gods’ incarnation, his prestige is far below that of you, the high priestess.
Luke: These conditions are disadvantageous for long-term authority. Plus, the people are starting to question things, with the increasingly burdensome work they do…
Luke: Which is why the pharaoh urgently needs this ritual to strengthen the trust that everyone has in him.
MC: !!!
My back broke into a cold sweat, hearing his low voice resounding off the cold, hollow stone.
Luke: The pharaoh’s methods are very simple…
Luke: First, use fear to force the people into submission, then save them himself, and finally, give them some far-fetched hope.
Luke: In this process, the “fear” is the curse, the “saving” is this curse-dispelling ritual, and the final “hope”…
Luke: Is you.
MC: Me?
Luke: Correct. You, the high priestess who is deeply revered by the people, who is a major threat to the pharaoh.
Luke: He will bestow you the right to enter Aaru* before the populace, and vow that this honour will be given hereafter to the most faithful of followers.
*Note: Aaru literally means “Field of Reeds”, which is what the Chinese text says.
MC: Aaru…
In the myths, the deceased would enter “The House of Osiris” after judgment. That lush, leafy heaven was called Aaru.
Though I had a faint hunch already, I still asked my question…
MC: What must be done to enter Aaru?
Luke stared at me, a sliver of pity in his eyes.
Luke: Come with me.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
Luke brought me through a winding corridor to the underground shrine.
Luke: Aside from the terrible missions I do for the pharaoh, this is also one of my duties.
MC: This is…
As we got deeper, a familiar scent grew stronger. It was the scent I had smelled before from Luke, but its source was different this time.
Luke: You seemed to like this scent a lot before…
A bed carved from alabaster had been placed in the middle of the massive room.
The scent came from the containers on the nearby round table, from which the incense I had been so curious about probably came from.
But…
Luke: But will you still feel the same after this?
Luke walked up to the round table. On it, aside from the incense, there was a row of sharp tools.
Luke: The legends say that the soul will remain attached to the body after death. If the proper antiseptic preservation methods are performed, they can come back to life one day…
Luke: This is how one enters Aaru.
MC: Mummies…
This was the tradition handed down from the ancient times of the dynasty.
As the procedure was cumbersome, only the pharaoh or the royal family would receive this honour, and also…
MC: Typically, this is only done after the person has died…
Luke: Yes. So, for the pharaoh, the other purpose of this ritual is to get rid of you.
MC: … Get rid of me?
I instinctively shook my head.
MC: No – according to the legends, the dead can reach the afterlife under the guidance of their patron god Anubis…
MC: I don’t think there’s anything that different compared to when they’re alive…
Luke: Is that what you really think?
Luke held up the chisel on the table. I shouldn’t have been scared, with my enduring belief in the gods, but my body couldn’t help trembling.
Luke: This process is not as simple as you think.
He gripped my wrist and stuffed the chisel into my hand, pointing it at his forehead.
Luke: First in the antiseptic procedure… this will be scooped out.
As if he was trying to make me experience all of this…
He ignored the pale red marks, watching me seriously with his unfathomable eyes. The tip of the chisel glided over his skin, down his nose, neck, chest, and abdomen.
Luke: Next, the other organs in the body are taken out from the cut on the abdomen.
Luke: All that is left in the end is the heart…
Luke: As everyone generally considers the heart to be the symbol of intelligence, and that it is needed on the path to the afterlife.
As Luke went on with his slow narration, an overwhelming fear grew like a whirlpool in my heart.
Ding-
My hand had released the chisel, and it clattered on the floor.
MC: …
I opened my mouth, but I had no idea what to say.
Finally, he held up my hand, slowly placing it over his heart.
Luke: But after all these procedures end and the heart is left, do you think that it could ever beat again?
Luke: The afterlife, Aaru, the gods… do these truly exist?
Luke: Do you believe in them?
The warmth and the forceful beats – everything that I felt under my palm – were the greatest proof of life.
After this, Luke released me.
I lowered my hand slowly, feeling nothing but a biting coldness and an infinite emptiness.
Luke: High priestess, though you have no way out anymore…
Luke: I hope that you can at least see all this clearly in your remaining time.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
For as far as I could remember, I lived in Ayana Temple and worshipped the gods piously.
Even if I had my doubts now, what could I even do at this point?
I tossed and turned for a long time that night…
Amid my never-ending unease, I dreamed – something that I had not done in a long while.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
[Flashback]
In the resplendent Ayana Temple, the pharaoh, in place of the former priest who had died from illness, kindly bestowed the title of succession on me.
He then handed the splendid cup full of sacrament wine to me.
Pharaoh: Gods bless you.
I held my hand out to accept it, but the cup suddenly fell to the ground. There was now no one in the sacrificial room.
Only a boy dressed in finery stood behind the curtain, speaking earnestly-
Boy: If you want to live, then run.
[Flashback end]
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
MC: !!!
I suddenly woke right when he finished speaking.
The incense box placed at the headboard fell off the stone bed from my movements, making a clinking sound in the silent, empty room.
MC: This dream is…
I leaned down and picked up that incense box, and was suddenly reminded of what that stand owner outside the town had told me.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
[Flashback]
Stand Owner: Oh right, one other thing…
Stand Owner: This Kyphi incense was once used in various rituals.
Stand Owner: So, these complicated ingredients include some that have slight anaesthetic and hallucinogenic effects…
Stand Owner: High priestess, be careful that you do not overuse or ingest it when using it.
[Flashback end]
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
The leftover fried bean balls were placed beside the bed.
Though I felt that it tasted completely different from before no matter how much I tried it…
But another serving would be sent tomorrow, assuming nothing went wrong…
MC: If so…
I clenched the incense box in my hand and made up my mind.
MC: Just like he said before…

Part 5
Desert Shrine
As expected, Luke had people send over freshly fried bean balls the next day.
While no one was around, I added some of the incense source from the box into its filling.
After, I coaxed Luke to eat them, and he did so without any hesitation or doubt.
Luke: …
The anesthetic aspect soon took effect.
I heard his quiet, low groans as he held his forehead, his eyes gradually becoming hazier.
MC: Are you alright?
Luke: … Huh? You…!
I snatched the moment he fell into a daze…
Bam-
After pushing Luke down onto the ground, I rapidly grabbed the cloth strips behind me that I’d made from the bedding, tying his hands up tight.
After ensuring that I was safe, I lowered my body and stared at him.
Maybe it was because of the effects of the incense, or maybe because his current, troubled state left him flustered…
Luke’s breathing in his tied-up state was rapid and his chest heaved violently, almost as if I could hear his heartbeat.
Luke: You… don’t get so close…
MC: Are you scared? I was also scared before… and those innocent, victimized people probably were too.
MC: Do you now know what it feels like?
Luke: …
His eyes no longer shifted away. Instead, they met mine directly.
I looked into those crystalline, penetrating eyes, and to my surprise, I saw a trace of evident apology in them.
Luke: … I’m sorry.
Luke: I know it must not have been easy for you to do this much…
His voice was gentle. Despite his current situation, I couldn’t hear the slightest bit of resentment.
This sudden consolation left me frozen for a moment.
But before I could soften, I forced myself to stay on guard, in case he was planning to escape.
MC: Pretty words won’t help you. I won’t let you go.
Luke: I wasn’t asking for you to let me go.
MC: Back on topic – where is the key to the door? How do I get out?
Luke: There is no key.
MC: If you won’t tell the truth, I really won’t hold back…
I slowly got closer to him, trying to display a threatening sort of pressure.
And his breathing did indeed become panicky again.
Luke: … I’m telling the truth.
Luke: Those doors don’t have locks, and they don’t even have guards set there. You only don’t know because you never tried.
MC: !!!
Just like he said, I had never thought of escaping, as if I had been bound here.
But things were different now…
Right when I was planning to get up, he called out to me.
Luke: Wait.
Luke: I told you before - make sure to deal with all the threats behind you, or else all of your efforts will go up in smoke eventually.
Luke: So… aren’t you going to do anything?
Luke looked at me searchingly, his expression calm.
He was bound up, yet I felt like he was in the active position right now, dominating the entire situation.
MC: … No need. That would only cause a greater commotion. Either way, the guards won’t find you for now, so I have enough time to escape.
MC: After this, someone will punish you for your mistake.
Luke: Is that so…
He smiled faintly at me as if he were moved, the emotion in his eyes indescribable.
Luke: After you escape, remember to not be so softhearted ever again.
MC: …
I suppressed the mixed feelings in my heart, getting up without replying to him.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
Everything became quiet again as the footsteps faded off, leaving only the faint sounds of the flickering candles.
Luke did not call for help. He applied a slight force with his wrists, easily breaking free of his bindings.
He stood up by supporting himself against the wall, then released a gratified sigh towards the direction that the girl had vanished in.
Luke: As it should be…
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
After I was fortunately able to leave that underground shrine through a secret path, I had originally prepared myself to have to rough it…
But, beyond my expectations, this death-escaping journey was much smoother than I’d expected.
As I wandered aimlessly, a caravan headed for foreign lands suddenly appeared in the desolate desert, just like a mirage.
They said that they were going to the oasis country across the sea…
Where resources and people abounded, where it was as overflowing with culture as it was here – a fertile land that drew many to it.
In the night, the salty, wet sea wind blew in my face, making me feel as if everything I’d experienced was an entire lifetime ago.
Caravan Member: Get ready to board the boat – we’re about to set off.
MC: Mhmm…
I looked at the merchant boat floating beside the shore. For some reason, I felt an inexplicable restlessness.
Caravan Member: Don’t worry, young lady. We’re honorable businesspeople – no human trafficking whatsoever.
Caravan Member: And since you’ve promised to help us with miscellaneous work, it’s a transaction where both sides benefit, so you don’t need to feel like you owe us…
Caravan Member: If you’re still worried, I’ve got a self-defense dagger here for you. You can keep it on you at all times on the trip.
MC: … Thank you.
I took the dagger that he held out to me, but that feeling of distress still didn’t dispel.
Seeing that the sailors were beginning to retrieve the anchor, I could only follow him onto the wooden board that connected the shore to the merchant boat.
But right before I boarded…
MC: !!!
MC: He’s…
Right when I was halfway there, I suddenly saw a familiar silhouette on deck.
Though we didn’t know each other, I remembered his face clearly, because on that night…
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
[Flashback]
In the little, dusky alley, just a few steps away, a man was lying motionlessly on the floor.
MC: Are you alright?!
I rushed over, preparing to check his body for injuries. However…
MC: !!!
A frigid aura emanated from behind me. I instinctively stopped moving.
???: Sometimes, being too sharp isn’t a good thing.
[Flashback end]
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
MC: (Shouldn’t he already be…)
MC: (Plus, isn’t it way too coincidental for him to be boarding the same merchant boat that’s escaping across the sea as me…)
I finally seemed to have sorted through my originally messy emotions…
Right then, I recalled the various minor details that I had ignored before.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
[Flashback]
Luke: Do you know why we worship the birds?
MC: Because they can fly freely to the world of the gods?
Luke: Yes. So, high priestess, the one who boasts the title of the gods’ messenger – why do you shut yourself up in a little cage?
Luke: In my opinion, you should be able to go to more, greater places without any worries.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
Luke: This isn’t the temple, so doing some improper things should be alright…
Luke: If the gods truly were to lay blame onto someone, then don’t I deserve even more blame for this sin, as the one who encouraged you to do this?
[Flashback end]
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
Encouraged… I repeated this word in my head.
Those strange emotions, those inexplicable words – the answer seemed to be within reach after I painstakingly pondered over them.
Nearby, the sailors were urging people onboard. There was no more time for me to speak with that man on the deck.
Caravan Member: Get aboard, young lady! Get aboard!
All I had left were these final seconds.
I knew right then that this was a critical decision in changing my fate. I should have gone for the more reliable option, but…
“After you escape, remember to not be so softhearted ever again.”
But this time, I wouldn’t do as he wanted.
MC: (There must be a better way to solve this than doing nothing and escaping alone…)
The waves surged in the night wind. Finally, I ended up returning to the shore, against the blowing wind.
I returned to that shrine one day later.
The ritual was imminent. I gripped the dagger that the caravan member had given me and carefully made my way through the winding secret path…
In the former grand hall, there now stood another person aside from Luke.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
Chief Guard: So you really were playing little tricks.
Chief Guard: I specifically had people investigate after that day – the so-called grave pile doesn’t have any skeletons at all.
Chief Guard: Where exactly did the people that the pharaoh had you deal with go?
I held my breath, lying low silently in the corner.
The chief guard was a devoted follower of the pharaoh. He was as hostile as he had been that day, pointing his sword straight at Luke.
Chief Guard: And the high priestess – where is she?
Luke was completely unarmed, seeming like he’d lost his will to live as he lowered his neck to the sword blade.
Luke: None of your business.
Chief Guard: If you’re going to be so pigheaded, then on behalf of the pharaoh…
When I saw the chief guard swing his sword, I sprinted out and stabbed him in the back-
MC: !!!
I thought that I’d landed the mark… But he reacted with shocking speed, changing his direction of force as he backhandedly parried my attack.
With the clinking of metal, the dagger was sent flying into the corner.
Luke: Careful!!!
I heard Luke shout anxiously. Right then, my mind was completely blank as my ability to think evaporated.
Time seemed to stagnate. I watched wide-eyed as the chief guard swung his sword at me…
MC: …
But right after, my body spontaneously reacted.
A fierce wind blasted in my face as I saw the blade sweep past my hair. I instinctively retreated one step, rolling to the altar as I dodged the slash.
Chief Guard: !!!
Under the chief guard’s astonished stare, I got up and grabbed the two chisels on the round table. Then, I threw one of them at him before he could react…
Clang-
Using the moment that he deflected it with his sword, I sped forward. After this feint, I met his shocked, widened eyes as I adjusted my center of gravity, stabbing him at his weak point on his side-
Bang!
When I came back to my senses, the chief guard had already fallen.
The sharp chisel was embedded in his back waist as a crimson liquid flowed out unceasingly from the wound, dyeing the ground in red.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
Luke: Are you alright?!
Luke ran staggeringly over to me. Only when I had indicated that I was fine did he release a breath.
After he wiped the stains off the back of my hand, he blocked my view of the chief guard.
Luke: Don’t worry, he’s still alive… just leave the rest to me.
MC: I… I…
The crisis had been averted and my rationality had returned, yet a greater fear flooded over me.
MC: H-how did that happen… just now… my movements…
I had always lived in the temple, praying daily to the gods.
But the memories that were growing clearer in my mind told me that both the instinctive fighting skills just now and the scene before my eyes…
Were not my first encounter with them.
Part 6
Ayana Temple
I could vaguely remember seeing these brutal scenes often, back during candidate training.
I once snuck into the temple and prayed to the gods, not as a priestess, but as a pathetic seeker of help.
Boy: I finally get to see you again. I thought you weren’t going to ever return.
Boy: Are these things on the altar… the offerings you brought?
“Yes, these are the leftover fried bean balls from what the uncle in the city was selling… please try some.”
Boy: You look like you’ve been injured again… does it hurt? Come over – I’ll apply some medicine for you.
“I’m alright – at least I still can feel things. But there are some children who couldn’t hold on, who won’t ever get up again after lying down.”
“So, esteemed high priest, there is something that I would like to request you help me bring to God…”
“… I have prayed for a long time, but it seems like he has always ignored my wish.”
Boy: I’m still learning from my teacher, so I’m not an official priest yet.
Boy: But since you chat with me all the time, and because of the fried bean balls you brought, I’ll do my best to help you.
Boy: Tell me, what’s your wish?
“I don’t want to do things for the new pharaoh. I only want to… continue living peacefully…”
Boy: … I got it.
Boy: If you want to live, then escape.
“But they run much faster than I do. I’m sure they’d catch me instantly…”
Boy: They won’t.
“Why?”
Boy: Because God just told me that he heard your wish, so he will protect you.
Boy: Plus… he also wants you to live on peacefully.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
That night, I mustered the courage to leave the empire.
I didn’t dare stop running until I was thoroughly exhausted, in fear of the chasing soldiers behind me.
Finally, I collapsed in the desert. When I woke again, I was in the temple.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
The high priest sat on the bedside, stroking my head gently.
Former Priest: From now onwards, this will be your residence. You can study here with me without worry.
I asked him “why” many times, but the only answer I ever received was a sigh, as well as those never-changing words-
Former Priest: Because the gods favor you.
The gods favor me…
But after that, I never saw that boy in the temple, and the high priest never said a word about him.
I continued praying devoutly to the gods, praying that I would be able to see him again.
During those days of prayer, I even suspected that the one person who had heard my wish might have been a god himself.
After the aged high priest passed away, the pharaoh gave me sacrament wine during the succession ceremony.
This was the only way to reach higher levels of consciousness and build a connection with the gods.
Gradually, I forgot what my goal in all this was.
Amid the never-ending prayers, only a deep belief in the gods became rooted firmly in my heart.

Desert Shrine
MC: Luke…
After dealing with the unconscious chief guard’s wound, Luke looked back at me from his place in a hard-to-detect corner.
He looked completely worn-out, yet he looked extremely similar to that finely-dressed, holy boy of my memories.
MC: The pharaoh messed with the sacrament wine… at the temple before, did you knock it over on purpose?
MC: I did forget what happened, but you’ve always remembered…
After a moment of dumbfoundedness, Luke smiled resignedly.
Luke: Before, I thought that forgetting the past and starting anew was a good thing.
Luke: But now, I feel that it’s better to remember some things, such as… a past desire to live.
MC: …
Only then did I completely understand that the so-called gods had never favored me.
It was Luke… he was supposed to be the empire’s oracle priest revered by the populace, and he traded his fate with me.
MC: … But why did you help me?
Luke: Because I stopped believing in the gods, starting from that day.
Luke swept calmly past the protective Anubis statues on the two sides.
To him, those probably weren’t the revered ancient gods at all – instead, they were two worthless rocks.
Finally, his gaze fell on me, his mood hard to describe.
Luke: I couldn’t understand – if the gods truly existed, why did they never help you despite all of your many prayers?
Luke: Were you not sincere enough, or were they not benevolent enough? Or – maybe the gods don’t exist at all.
Luke: I deliberated over this unsolvable problem many times, and ultimately made a decision.
Luke: Regardless if they had heard your wish, I, at least, had heard it. So I would be the one to fulfill it.
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
[Flashback]
Former Priest: You want to save her, but how will you do so?
Former Priest: Those children were selected by the pharaoh from many places. Though it is difficult to distinguish who they are from the masks that they typically wear…
Former Priest: But the numbers are rigorously counted every day. They’ll know instantly if one is missing.
Boy: Then I’ll replace her.
Boy: Our ages are similar, and even if our genders are different, there are several hundred candidates. No one will care that much.
Former Priest: …Ridiculous! I did not train you for this sort of purpose!
Boy: But, high priest…
Boy: If I leave this alone and she really does die from injury in training one day…
Boy: Not only would I stop believing in the gods – I’d even start hating them… in that case, I would not be able to serve as your successor.
Boy: So, I beg you…
[Flashback end]
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
Luke smiled lightly after his explanation.
Luke: Maybe because I was very fit with particular talent…
Luke: Though I started training late, I still was able to hold on until the end, thanks to a surpassing will to live.
He spoke so simply about a process that must have nearly killed him many times.
I faced him, a bitterness that I couldn’t swallow in my throat.
MC: Will to live… then why were you willing to be defeated by the chief guard?
Luke: …
Luke: If I knew that I’d be able to see you again, I would have definitely resisted.
Luke let out a deep sigh, then looked back at me seriously.
Luke: There is still some time until the ritual, so run now. Hide by the seashore for the next while, and wait for the next…
MC: I won’t run.
Luke: Don’t joke around! You…
He was just about to admonish me when the sounds of footsteps sounded from the far end of the corridor.
Luke picked up the chisel that had just been taken off the chief guard’s body in response.
Luke: I’ll deal with this.
MC: Wait. Don’t make a big ruckus out of this.
I grabbed his hand, wiping the red stains on his body with my clothes.
Luke understood my intentions quickly.
He frowned, knowing that time was tight, and could only pull aside the curtain before the altar as I wanted…
✼ ┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ ✼
The moment I reclined on the altar, the reporting guard also rushed in, a few steps away from us behind the curtain.
Guard: The pharaoh will be here soon – may I ask how much longer you need…
Luke: … I’m already preparing.
Guard: The high priestess…
The guard stepped up to check on the situation as he spoke…
Luke: The high priestess has already gone to rest. Do not disturb her.
Right after, Luke threw the chisel he was holding past the curtain, embedding it beside his foot.
The curtain fluttered gently, revealing half of my hanging arm.
Guard: Y-yes…
Startled by Luke’s angry sullenness, the guard retreated from the stone room.
When everything quieted down again, he released a breath, planning to help me up from the altar…
While he was off-guard, I reached up, pulling him down by the nape of his neck.
This sudden action gave him no time to react, and with his unstable center of gravity, he could only prop himself up in front of me…
Luke: What are you doing…!
His breathing grew panicked from my movements.
He could’ve easily broken free, but he let me approach his ear as I placed my head in the hollow of his neck.
Luke: … Stop smelling it. Don’t you find it dirty?
Luke: I already told you that this incense’s scent comes from my antiseptic work…
MC: It’s not dirty at all. I like your scent a lot.
I inhaled gently. My exhale blew over his ear and neck, trembling slightly.
MC: You ensure that the souls of the deceased can rest peacefully, and you give living people new chances.
MC: You’ve saved so many people, including me… to me, you are more worthy of reverence than those imaginary gods.
MC: So, Luke, let’s find a way that can save both others and ourselves this time.
Luke: Do you mean…
MC: Fake it until the end, just like earlier – then, deal with the pharaoh using the ritual.
If only Luke made a move, he was sure to be executed after being charged with severe crimes.
But if I, who was thought to have gone to “Aaru” already, suddenly “resurrected” and imposed punishment on the pharaoh for the “gods”…
We might gain the trust of the people and have a chance at living.
Luke: This is too risky for you…
Luke: I’m worried…
He seemed to have realized that I wouldn’t change my mind, powerlessly lowering his head as he spoke, his trembling voice full of worry and distress.
MC: Based on our customs, the priest will write protective incantations on papyrus paper and place it in the tomb of the deceased, to bless them so that they will live peacefully in the afterlife.
MC: If you’re worried, Luke, write some prayers for me too.
Luke: … That’s bad luck. You’re still alive.
MC: The blessing intent remains the same, though.
Unable to persuade me, Luke could only hum an affirmative.
Luke: I’ve already thought of what to write. I’ll do it in a moment.
MC: What is it?
Luke: I’ll tell you after it ends, so… you must get out of this safe and sound.
We plotted a plan that was basically blasphemy against the gods, clinging together on the holy altar.
Before he finished carefully preparing my body as if for a corpse and covered me with a blanket… he kissed my forehead, as if in blessing.
In the faintly flickering candlelight, I looked into those perfectly clear eyes, praying reverently that the lights in them would never be extinguished…
… Simultaneously, giving that kiss a more fervent response.
Finally, this curse-dispelling, empire-stirring prayer ritual came to an end with the death of the pharaoh.
Opinions varied on the entire course of events, leaving a heavy, bright mark on the history of the dynasty.

Palace
One month after the new pharaoh succeeded to the throne.
Chief Guard: I will bring the young pharaoh back then, high priestess. There is still much that he must study – if he hadn’t been clamoring about coming to the temple…
Chief Guard: Ah, forget it.
I nodded, preparing to rise and send him off.
Before he left, I couldn’t resist calling out to that eternally straight-backed chief guard, who was intimidating even when he merely stood there.
MC: Even if the people believed my words that day, you must have known the reason behind it all, chief guard…
MC: You have always only obeyed the pharaoh, so why have you still not made a move?
Chief Guard: High priestess, I don’t understand what you mean.
Chief Guard: I still obey to the “pharaoh” – otherwise, I would not have brought him to you today to play.
MC: … That is true.
Chief Guard: If you are trusted as the will of the people, then the reason why the former pharaoh – the incarnation of the gods – died so easily, may have been the will of the heavens.
Chief Guard: This isn’t something I can do anything about… especially since the true offender has long died in prison, so there is nothing to go over seriously about.
Chief Guard: As time is tight, I will head off first.
MC: Take care.
Just as the chief guard said, the person who dealt the lethal blow to the pharaoh and cut off his head was not me, but Luke.
He was subsequently imprisoned… although…
Luke: Ugh, that chief guard really sounds satisfied with my “death in prison”.
Luke popped in through the window, sighing annoyedly.
MC: On the other hand, that’s a good thing – if even the chief guard believes that, no one will probably suspect anything…
MC: … Sorry that this was the only way to let you let you escape unscathed.
Luke: It’s alright – I’m perfectly fine, right? Just that…
Luke: You should deal less with that chief guard and that ignorant, incompetent little pharaoh from now on.
Luke: Who knows when they might come up with crooked ideas to set you up…
MC: It’s alright – you’re here, after all.
Luke: That’s true. Then, remember to rely on me more in the future, like right now…
MC: !!!
Luke embraced me from behind, bringing me to recline together on the long couch.
Luke: You’ve been dealing with the messes left by the former pharaoh for all of last night. You didn’t even get a wink of sleep.
Luke: Take an afternoon nap, now that you have time for once… I’ll be with you.
MC: … Okay.
I was just about to close my eyes when a sudden breeze blew in from the window, blowing the papyrus scrolls on the table onto the ground.
MC: Ah!
Luke: Don’t move… I’ll pick those scrolls up in a moment. Let them do whatever for now.
MC: They’re not documents, though. They’re what you wrote for me…
Realizing that Luke wasn’t going to let go, I could only mumble an explanation, burying my head in embarrassment into his chest.
Those papyrus scrolls were the prayers that he had written for me before that prayer ceremony.
Luke: … I didn’t think you’d keep them.
MC: Of course I did.
Luke still didn’t let me go, instead reclining his head on my shoulder. Like the hair coiling around my neck, I heard a few comfortable hums, making me feel slightly tingly.
He then spoke.
Luke: When everything settles down, let’s go to a country across the sea where no one recognizes us.
MC: Mhmm, okay.
Perhaps that oasis country across the sea was my true “Aaru”.
Embracing a hope for the future, a sleepiness gradually descended on me…
As I fell asleep, I seemed to hear him gently reciting that prayer written on the papyrus scrolls by my ear-
Luke: “I pray that you will continue to live bravely onwards, as you had described.”
Luke: “When you are exhausted, I too will cease, and sink with you into an eternal slumber.”
Aftertalk
Done with work? Looks like I finally have the chance to be with you alone.
>Intimate interactions >Fried bean balls…
>Select ankh
MC: (According to the legends, this is a possession of the gods with disaster- and illness-preventing effects. It represents the repeating nature of life, rebirth, and eternity.)
Luke: You’ve been staring at my chest for a while. Are you curious about the pendant?
MC: A little… if I recall correctly, you don’t believe in this stuff, so why would you wear an amulet like that?
Luke: I don’t use this to protect myself – I only wore it before as part of the prayers for the deceased, and then I just got used to it.
Luke: Although, it’s pretty pointless at this point. Maybe I should take it off…
MC: Huh? Don’t take it off… I think it looks pretty good as normal jewelry. Just keep it on.
Luke: Is that so? If you like seeing me wear it, then I won’t take it off.
>Select upper-left
MC: (The new pharaoh is still young and requires a lot of support from the temple…)
MC: (This place has been receiving an endless stream of guests all day recently. It’s so rare for me to have time to talk to Luke.)
>Select head
MC: Luke, have you been wearing that mask these days?
Luke: Sometimes I wear it when going out, so my face doesn’t get seen… although, that’s not necessary with you.
MC: Indeed – I can’t see your expression when you’re wearing a mask. This is much better.
>Intimate interactions >Fried bean balls…
MC: Weird, these fried bean balls have a distinct taste compared to the ones we ate before…
Luke: I knew that I couldn’t hide this from you. I made this secretly in the kitchen while no one was there.
Luke: Since I can’t appear in the market now under my current conditions – it would be bad if my identity were exposed.
MC: Is that so….
MC: (Before, I announced that Luke had died in prison. Though he was able to avoid execution thanks to this, his freedom is still limited.)
Luke: What’s the matter? Based on your expression… does it taste bad?
MC: Not at all! It doesn’t taste bad! I’m just worried that you might find your lifestyle right now really boring…
MC: If you want, you can leave the empire for a while, so you wouldn’t need to be so careful.
Luke: I don’t want that, because… not only do I not find it boring, but I also feel like this isn’t too bad, the way things are.
MC: Really?
Luke: Yep, really. Since no one knows that I’m alive, I don’t have to bother with some unnecessary dealings too.
Luke: Plus, it’s because that I’m alone that you’ll worry about me from time to time, just like now, right?
Luke: No matter where you are or who you’re talking to, you’ll remember that I’m waiting for you. That’s enough to satisfy me.
MC: Luke, don’t be so easily satisfied…
MC: Even if we go elsewhere in the future where you don’t need to conceal yourself, I’ll always be thinking of you.
Luke: Then, when time comes, I’ll be able to monopolize you openly… and beat off anyone who bothers us.
MC: Pfft, isn’t that a little too childish?
Luke: I’ve been holding back for so long, so it should be justifiable for me to be a bit childish…
Luke: Plus, I’m also hoping that after you shed the responsibility you bear, you can be more childish and reckless in front of me, okay?
MC: Okay… I’ll try.

Hello friends! Apologies for the delayed reply! I initially delayed writing back because it was nearly Halloween and my family and I were observing the holiday, and then it just kept slipping my mind. Don’t worry about your telepathic communication unnerving me, I have no problem with hearing my own voice. I’m far too fond of talking for that to be the case. (I’m joking, but I genuinely don’t believe your communication will bother me in the least. I do appreciate the heads-up, though.)
Speaking of Halloween, has anyone told you about holidays? In case no one has: humans like to set aside particular days out of the year, often in commemoration or recognition of some important event, person, or concept, and celebrate those days in a ritually prescribed manner (with room for creativity in the celebrations of individual people and families). Many human societies have arrived at the idea that the world we live in and the world of the supernatural are closer together at this time of year, and Halloween is a holiday to mark that occurrence. Many of the traditions are—or at least originally were, regardless of why people observe them today—aimed at protecting oneself from unwanted supernatural attention. The practice of hollowing out vegetables (originally turnips, but now people in the United States at least generally use pumpkins, as they’re much larger and easier to work with), carving “faces” into them, and putting a candle inside to create a falls under this category (if you’ve noticed a sudden and recurring abundance of pumpkins on porches in the autumn, that’s why), as does the wearing of costumes and disguises of various kinds. Many households decorate their homes with representations of various frightening things, including dead humans in various guises (“ghosts,” skeletons, corpses, mummies, undead creatures like vampires or zombies, et cetera), spiders and spiderwebs, bats (associated with vampires), machines that create fog or react to motion with light and sound to startle passersby, and the like. Also popular are activities aimed at deliberately inducing and experimenting with fear in a relatively safe context, such as “haunted” houses (staffed with human actors in costumes and makeup) or games that simulate being hunted; practical jokes of various kinds; telling stories, reading books, or watching films that depict frightening, deadly, and/or unnatural occurrences; and rewarding children for going out after dark and approaching strangers’ front doors by the simple expedient of most households offering candy to any child who approaches and asks with a prescribed phrase (“trick or treat!”). Halloween, more than any other major holiday popular in the United States, is often associated with children, and my theory is that it’s at least partially a way of helping young people learn to cope with fear without actually putting them in danger. But that’s just a guess, I haven’t done much research to confirm it, so take it with a grain of salt.
I’m glad you enjoyed the picture of the plane, and I appreciate your description of the odor of the book that transformed you. I have an academic interest in the mechanics of curses (as well as a slight practical one, seeing as I have no intention of stopping my fiction-writing endeavors anytime soon and would like to avoid inadvertently cursing myself again), and the information you provided was most interesting. Don’t worry about not having thought to ask my pronouns—I’m sure many aspects of human and other humanoid identity are confusing to anyone who hasn’t had much experience with them. Thank you for the well-wishes, and I return them, as well as a wish that your processes of finding things that interest you individually, outside the influence of your patron, may be successful and enjoyable.
As for book recommendations, yes, I have some!
If you’re after nonfiction, you can’t go wrong with anything written by Mary Roach. She’s a science writer with a delightfully entertaining writing style, a fierce determination to go wherever her topic takes her, and a passion for writing about the aspects of life that many prefer not to think about, especially the mundane practicalities of topics often viewed with a layer of abstraction—war, space travel, human investigations into the possibility of an afterlife, the various fates of dead bodies, sex, the digestive system, and, most recently, human conflicts with other life forms. She’s probably my favorite author of all time, and I can’t recommend her books enough.
In terms of fiction, my recommendations will definitely be affected by the recent holiday, but I’ll do my best.
The first thing that comes to mind is the Sherlock Holmes stories, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. They were written in the late 19th to early 20th century, and concern a fictional detective and his best friend, Dr. John Watson, who helps with and writes up his cases. The conceit is that the stories were written by Watson himself, and exist within the fictional universe they portray. Holmes is a fascinating character who has captured popular imagination for well over a century, and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he were touched by your patron—although there’s certainly a case to be made for the Hunt as well. In addition to the stories, there are four novels, of which The Hound of the Baskervilles is by far the best.
Another book from the late 19th century that I love and think you might enjoy is Dracula, by Bram Stoker. It’s another example of epistolary fiction, which means the documents that make up the novel all exist within the world of the novel itself. In this case, the story is told through diary entries, letters, newspaper articles, telegrams, and the like. It begins with the travel journal of a young lawyer sent to facilitate the sale of property in London to a Transylvanian nobleman who turns out to be both a vampire and a colossal bastard, and eventually grows into a network of seven people, all friends or friends of friends, who come together to protect and avenge themselves and each other by fighting back against a seemingly invincible enemy. It’s very much a book about the power of record-keeping, and how the stories of the dead shouted into a future from which they know they’ll never hear an answer can still matter to the people who find and hear them. It’s also about love, friendship, survival and recovery after trauma, train schedules, and incredible violence. Often all at the same time. It’s great.
For modern books, there are many I could recommend, but right now what’s coming to mind is The Highest Tide, by Jim Lynch. It’s about a thirteen-year-old boy, Miles O’Malley, who is in my opinion a strong candidate for a future acolyte of my patron. Miles lives on the coast of Washington state and finds a giant squid when out for a walk on the beach one night and quickly finds himself the center of attention he’s not sure how to deal with. It’s a book about growing up, making mistakes, and learning to get by in a world that never quite seems to fit you. It’s also a book about the Pacific Ocean and everything it hides. As a fellow Pacific Coast dweller, I appreciate it very much.
Let me know if I can provide any more recommendations, or if there’s anything else you’d like me to give my thoughts on! I hope you all have a wonderful day!

It started innocently enough, Archivist, we promise. Though we now understand we nosed around things not meant for us.
It started with a few strange cloud formations after we had snuffed around the bins of a library, like wisps of smoke twisting and curling in the breeze. We thought nothing of it until the sky began to whisper. At first, the whispers were faint, like a distant radio signal barely breaking through the static. But they grew louder, more insistent, and soon we couldn't ignore them any longer.
The words were nothing we could understand at the time, a quiet cacophony of noise and syllables, yet as the days went on and we sought refuge in any place we could, to try and distance ourselves from the noise, the words began to form ideas and pictures in our heads we couldn't comprehend.
We huddled together one night, trembling, terrified, and distraught, thinking it our last one alive before we were consumed by the noise. We felt as though the air were as heavy as a human pressing down upon us– suffocating us. Beneath our very bodies what we thought of the world, of our simple reality, crumbled and came undone. In its stead with those strands of what once was, our eyes were opened to what always has been.
We do not know how long we will be allowed to live, if what granted us this hideous knowledge has that power.
Thank you for listening, Archivist... We are so scared to be in this sprawling world we have been forced to know. We can still hear its whispers, though it chooses to still use a tongue we do not understand.
How fascinating… I believe you are an example of a fairly rare manifestation of my Patron; so many fear being known, but fewer realize the true horror of knowing what you weren’t meant to… Books are dangerous, you know. Sometimes even when you can’t read.
I’m sorry, for what it’s worth; this is a cruel burden to put on such small, fuzzy shoulders. I don’t believe you will die, though. It would be uncharacteristic of the Watcher. Though there is, also, a chance that the Madness is involved, or will swoop in later, if you cannot withstand what you now know… my advice to you is to follow the path of least resistance. You cannot shield yourselves from this, but you can make yourselves useful to it. You know too much, and you could learn more; did you know, quite a lot of people worry that the bright eyes of little things like you really can understand what they witness, really can judge, maybe even tattle… you are no longer as you were, but you’re resilient creatures. I’m sure you can adapt.

Can’t Help Falling in Love
Loki x Reader (f)
Valentine’s Day with the God of Mischief
Based on suggestion by: @squadleaderchase
A/N: Thank you so much for the suggestion! I loved writing this, it was so much fun!
Happy Valentine’s Day y’all!
There is also a gender neutral version of this fic, and will be posted shortly after this one! Read it here!
I recommend to putting on Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis towards the end just for that finishing touch!
Summary: When Loki learns about the traditions of Valentine’s Day, he asks you to be his Valentine- and reluctantly takes advice from Steve Rogers.
Word Count: 2.9k
Warnings: none; just fluff
“Can’t Midgardians have a holiday that doesn’t involve such a grotesque display of… red?” Loki asks walking into the living room of the Avengers compound. Loki arrived at the compound a few weeks before Christmas and so far, he’s experienced two Earth holidays: Christmas and New Year’s. Of course, Tony had picked the theme for both parties to be elaborately red and gold- he claimed the fact that it matched his suit was merely a coincidence.
“Just wait until next month,” you reply casually, your eyes not leaving the brief you were reading while you sat cozied up in one of the large armchairs. “I think you’ll like St. Patrick’s Day much more… color scheme wise at least.”
Loki looked up curiously at the hearts of all shades of red and pink Natasha had hung up to decorate the Avengers’ living quarters. She had gone to visit Clint’s family and his kids spent hours making Valentines and decorations out of construction paper and glitter. Loki looked almost puzzled at the lopsided hearts that hung from the ceiling on transparent line so they looked like they floated mid-air.
“Perhaps I might,” he mumbled to himself, the lovesick aura of his surroundings making him slightly disgusted. “Though I suppose I find your rituals as bizarre as you’d find on Asgard.”
“Mhmm,” you mumbled in response to his thinking out loud. It was rare that the compound would be this quiet. It was a Friday evening and in the middle of a team meeting earlier today, Tony declared exhaustedly that everyone needs to start the weekend early and dismissed everyone despite Steve’s protests. You weren’t sure where everyone else went and you didn’t particularly care- enjoying the rare peace and quiet.
You didn’t mind Loki’s company. He was a little aloof but overall, you found him more to be misunderstood than anything else. He wasn’t like Thor and sure, he had a very trouble ridden past to downplay it- but he’s confided in you all it wasn’t entirely his doing. Out of everyone living at the compound, he probably had grown the closest to you, or as close as Loki would allow himself to be to someone.
“What even is this holiday?” Loki asked, pulling his attention from the decorations to where you sat, binder in your lap. You looked up and closed the brief, tossing it onto the coffee table in front of where you sat.
“Sunday is Valentine’s Day,” you say looking back over to him, meeting his eyes. “I mean overtime the traditions and how we celebrate have changed but it’s originally the day meant to honor St. Valentine and commemorate his death. There’s a lot more to it than that and there’s all different of different origins, but now it’s more like a day where you celebrate love, because he was the patron Saint of Love.”
Loki nods, liking the idea of this holiday much more than New Years already. He didn’t mind Christmas, but the elaborate parties made everything not very appealing to him. You can’t blame the god for not having a good time at parties where every guest fears him or hates him. He walks over and takes a seat on the couch and crosses his legs. He was intrigued enough to continue the conversation and ask you more questions. “What are the traditions?” He asks curiously.
“Traditionally, you would ask someone to be your Valentine, and that’s the person you want to spend the day with,” you answer with a small shrug, trying to explain a holiday you’ve never had to explain before. “Some people have it easy and they ask their significant other, and if you don’t have one, you ask someone you’re romantically interested in to be your Valentine. Then you give each other gifts, like chocolates or flowers, anything really that’s romantic and you go out on a date, like a nice dinner but it doesn’t have to be. That’s the basic gist.”
“Thank you, (y/n),” Loki said, mulling over your explanation. “You’ve been helpful, as always. Tell me, who’s your Valentine?”
“I don’t have one,” you answered honestly. The only time you really celebrated was when you had been with someone. You’d never really participated otherwise. You planned to just spend the night alone or with Nat if she also didn’t have plans and probably watch a movie- most definitely Pride and Prejudice.
“Shame,” Loki said with a tsk. “Perhaps, if you would be interested, you could be my Valentine?”
“Really?” you ask, honestly surprised.
“I actually like the idea of the day,” Loki shrugged. “And I don’t know many people, people seem to hate me on this planet- no idea as to why. You’ve always been kind to me, and you are the most tolerable person I’ve encountered on this planet.”
“That’s oddly very kind of you,” you say with a chuckle. “I appreciate the sentiments. Um, yes. I’d be happy to be your Valentine.”
“Excellent,” he grinned. He clapped his hands together and stood up. “Splendid. I’ll ask Thor to help me plan something.”
“I’m looking forward to it,” you smile, picking up your paperwork again as Loki heads off to find his brother.
***
“Brother,” Thor’s voice echoed in the training room. “Spar with me?”
“As much as I would love to,” Loki said sarcastically, “I need your help with something I need to plan.” Loki walked over to the side of the mat where Thor had been training with Captain Rogers.
“Plan what?” Captain Rogers asked curiously. It was an innocent enough question but Loki took it as Rogers insinuating his distrust in him. Of course, Loki can’t blame the man but it did rub him the wrong way.
“If you must know Captain Rogers, I’m making plans for this upcoming Valentine’s Day,” Loki said matter-of-factly. “I’m sure since you have quite the active love life recently, your words of wisdom are probably of infinite value.”
“You can learn a thing or two from me,” Steve retorted as he put the punching bag beck into place. “But I don’t like your attitude.”
“I don’t know how I’ll ever manage without you,” Loki scoffed. He turned his attention back to his brother. “I need help to determine where I should take (y/n) and what I should get her.”
“(y/n) agreed to this?” Thor asks, his eyebrows raised in confusion. Rogers kept his mouth shut, deciding to see where this conversation will go before
“Yes, brother. I asked her to be my Valentine as stated by tradition and she said yes.”
“Ah! Good for you, brother!” Thor exclaimed, happily. “I’m glad you’re immersing yourself in the Midgard culture.”
“Yes, yes,” Loki waved him off, “Now, please, tell me what I should do.”
“I’ve never celebrated Valentine’s Day,” Thor says with a shrug and a sympathetic look. “I haven’t had much opportunity to explore the culture. Every time I’m on this planet I’m a little busy preventing its destruction. Perhaps Rogers can help you?”
Loki let out an exasperated sigh. He avoided Rogers as he knew the man had such a smug look on his face. Loki refused to give him the satisfaction. However, he realized that wouldn’t be fair to you. Rogers not only knew what to do, but he was also close friends with you. He quickly realized if he wanted to celebrate with you properly, he’d need to rely on the infamous super soldier.
“Captain Rogers,” Loki said with a charismatic smile, turning back to the man. “I wholeheartedly apologize for my lack of… social niceties. If you’d be willing to help me, to ensure your dear friend enjoys her holiday, I would be sincerely grateful.”
“Only because of (y/n),” Rogers says skeptically, waving a finger at Loki. “She deserves to enjoy her time and I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I let you screw up her evening.”
“What a loyal friend.”
Years later, the Avengers would still talk about the fact Loki cared about you so much, he sought out advice from Captain America and Thor. And as Captain America said, he helped Loki with every last detail and Steve never let Loki forget it.
***
Loki had told you that he’d come to your room to get you at 6 o’clock Sunday evening. He wore clothes he had picked out, black dress pants, a white button-down shirt and shiny, black dress shoes. He had kept the last button of the shirt unbuttoned and he had rolled the sleeves up, a styling tip he had gotten from Thor. He had his long hair gelled back and tamed, ignoring Captain Roger’s horrible suggestion for a haircut. He felt very weird not wearing any green, but he took the advice he was given on his ensemble.
You were just putting on your heels when he knocked at your door Sunday promptly at 6pm. Of course, Loki would be very punctual. You gave yourself one more quick once more in the mirror in your room before heading to answer the door.
You had on a pair of dark green heels that perfectly matched your dress. You also layered over the outfit a suede brown jacket, that complimented the jewel tone of the dress and shoes nicely. You kept your appearance simple, sticking to how you usually styled your hair. Not wanting to keep him waiting, you quickly opened the door, your jacket and bag both in hand.
“Wow,” you say with a grin, when you take in Loki’s appearance. “You look very nice.”
“You look stunning,” Loki said, his eyes widening, taking in your appearance. The compliment made you have butterflies.
“Thank you,” you said with false confidence. Underneath, you were a nervous wreck as you took the arm that he extended to you.
“So,” Loki began to walk down the hallway with you. “Apparently, this planet has something called reservations, and anyone who tries to get one a few days before Valentine’s Day is a “moron,” according to a very rude young man I had the pleasure of speaking with- the first time using a phone too on top of that. So, I hope you don’t mind if the evening is a little… makeshift.”
“I’m sure it’ll be great,” you reassure him. You feel him relax slightly. You found how hard he was trying so endearing.
Where else did he bring you but just down the hall to the living room. At night with the lights dimmed, combined with Natasha’s homemade decorations, it actually looked quite beautiful. He had decorated with an eclectic array of candles as well that covered most surfaces of the room. It also looked like he had swiped every throw pillow in the whole compound and had them arranged the coffee table in the center of the room.
“Did you do all of this?” You ask in awe.
“Yes,” he replied, just watching you. “Do you like it?”
“It’s perfect.”
“I had to make my own version of advice I received,” he disclosed to you. You sat opposite each other on either side of the coffee table, you kicked off your heels and he did the same with his shoes. “Captain Rogers said- and I’m trying my best to quote verbatim, ‘You need to show a girl a good time. You gotta take her to dinner and dancing.’” He even mimicked Steve’s voice perfectly. It made you laugh.
“I can’t believe you subjected yourself to Steve for me, I’m touched,” you smiled. “I mean I love Steve,” you continue, “But I can’t imagine you too being best friends anytime soon.”
“No, I suppose we probably won’t be,” Loki chuckles.
“I hate to point it out,” you continue, “but I think you missed both the dinner part and the dancing part of that plan.” Loki smirked and when you blinked, he transformed the whole room.
“Did I?” he asks, with an eyebrow raised. You gasp, looking around the room you were now in. You knew it was an illusion, but it felt very real. The atmosphere, the breeze coming in from the large bay windows that weren’t there before. The coffee table now a table now one of many dining tables in an incredibly high-end restaurant. The table had food, and a bottle of wine. You were stunned. There was a live band and other couples in other tables and out on the dancefloor.
“Loki?” You exclaimed, looking around at your new surroundings. It was amazing. You couldn’t believe the magic right before your eyes. Of course, you knew it was just one of his tricks, but it felt so incredibly real. You picked up your fork and took a bite of the food in front of you. It was incredible, you questioned if you were even eating.
“It’s real,” Loki said, like he could read your mind. Honestly, he had only just anticipated your next question. “I made it. Well, I made it with Friday’s supervision.”
“It’s fantastic! I can’t believe you went through all this trouble just for me.”
“Sweetheart, you are very much worth it- worth much more than this,” he responded casually, throwing in the term of endearment to see how you’d react. He caught the way it made you smile.
You continued to talk for a little while, and shared stories. You were worried that compared to his life on Asgard, he’d find your stories incredibly boring and mundane. It seemed to be the opposite. His attention was only on you and he held on to every word you said. He created this elaborate setting just to keep you the center of his attention.
“Should we dance?” He asks suddenly, a glimmer in his eye. You looked down apprehensively.
“I’m not really a dancer,” you tried to insist.
“Do you actually not want to dance, darling? Because if so, I will not bring it up again,” he says earnestly, “But, if you’re saying no because you’re afraid I’m going to judge you, I honestly can promise you I would never dream of doing so.”
You give it another moment to ponder over his words. You were taken aback at how well he seemed to know how you were thinking. You let out a sigh of defeat, and smile. “I’d love to,” you reply.
He stands up and offers you his hand. His smile is enough to make you weak at the knees. You take his hand and he leads you over to the dancefloor as the band starts playing its next song. “Does that singer sound like Elvis?” You ask, the small glitch in the illusion throwing you off for only a moment.
“I don’t know who that is,” Loki says with a laugh. He pulls you in close and rests one hand on the small of your back and the other grasps your hand close. You wrap your other arm around his shoulder. You are both pressed up incredibly close to one another. You rest your head on his chest comfortably, and you can’t see how much the action makes his whole face go red. Guiding your movements together, it mostly just swaying in place. The steps were small, and with the music playing for the two of you.
“This place is incredible,” you sigh happily looking up at him. “But I think I liked the first place a little better.”
He nodded in agreement and you got to watch a green hue encompass the walls of the restaurant as they almost melted away, and everything around the two of you just fade away. The sconces on the walls, revealed themselves to be the candles that cluttered the living room and the couples evaporated with the green mist. The table you had both sat at, turned back to the coffee table but the empty plates remained. The elaborate statues that surrounded the room turned into the furniture you knew well, and then the live band faded away to reveal Steve’s record player indeed playing a 45 of Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley.
When the room finished revealing its true appearance to you, you laid your head back on Loki’s chest and mumbled that now it was perfect. He smiled to himself, thinking about how without a doubt in his mind, Valentine’s Day is his absolute favorite holiday on Midgard. He now couldn’t believe this reality was real. If he wasn’t holding you, he’d pinch himself. You were here, with him, in his arms, dancing in the middle of the living room on this godforsaken planet.
“(y/n)?” he whispered softly as the song was coming to an end.
“Mhmm?” You responded, your eyes closed, really just basking in the feeling of being so close to him and the smell of his cologne.
“Will be mine?” He asks carefully, remembering the phrase from Captain Roger’s advice. That phrase apparently being very important if today went well and he wanted to ask you to “go steady.” You chuckled softly, hearing Steve’s influence in the phrase.
“I would love to,” you say with a shy smile looking back up to him. He beams, incredibly happy you said yes. Swept up in his emotions, he swiftly leans down and presses his lips to yours capturing them in a passionate first kiss.
“Oh gross!” You hear someone exclaim, making you both pull away. It’s Tony- who was currently holding his side in pain as Pepper elbowed him in the side.
“You really had to do that?” she chastised him, rolling her eyes and giving an apologetic look to you and Loki before pushing Tony down the hallway to give you both your moment back, as sullied as it had become thanks to Tony.
“I’m so sorry,” she said embarrassed by his outburst, ushering him out as quickly as possible.
Loki turns his head back to you, immediately after they are out of view. “Where were we, darling?” He smirks, pulling you in for another kiss.
