Something I noticed in the Fate, FateGO, FGO fandom. Feel free to tag it as such.

On record, Fate has probably some of the worst l*li designs I've ever seen from a franchise that does not expressly advertise itself as such. At the very least it's pretty easy to ignore imo since it only makes up for like 3 or 4 characters out of like the 350+.

What I DON'T get are the people who equate it to actual, REAL-LIFE kids getting hurt in cp (or the fiction directly effects reality crowd that claims it supports it), and then CONTINUE TO SUPPORT THE FRANCHISE ANYWAY.

The worst part is that they'll pull the "we should improve society somewhat" card. Bitch! What are you improving!? What are you doing to improve a franchise that (with your own words) supports cp that doesn't involve rightfully torching it and running like anyone with a functioning moral backbone would if what you're saying is true!?

You're not even the creators' primary JP audience, maybe secondary or tertiary at best.

The best way to send a message would be to literally just stop supporting it. As in, torching your account and running like any sane person would. If you get a large following they WILL see that it effects overseas sales, and at the very least tell other developers what won't bet tolerated for overseas fans.

Because cp is not just terrible it's a freaking CRIME. Report it to the FBI if you have to if you really think it that way.

There should be NO situation in which you can overlook cp or anything that supports it.

At best it's quite frankly a weird way of trying to get a franchise to change something when you know the devs are not gonna listen to you and the money/exposure you give them is gonna go to the very people that pump out the stuff you hate. At worst it's a pretty bizarre and blatant case of cognitive dissonance.

ichiro - an improvement. i like that it's very true to his og outfit and i think it looks better with just red (rather than the red + blue), plus that weird white undershirt that i always hated is gone <3

jiro - BB YOU LOOK SOOO GOOD it's a p small change but i like it, i like the hoodie more than his prev jacket and i love that they kept his stupid nonfunctional flannel <3 but most importantly the HAIR AHHHH im OBSESSED WITH PONYTAIL JIRO. the only small thing i dislike is the lack of hat </3 rip jiros hat (2017-2023) you will always be remembered

saburo - i liked his overcoat from his prev outfit so this fit is a bit of a downgrade for me :[[ he still looks good though and v true to his character so i dont mind too much

samatoki - oh thank fucking god, an outfit worthy of his hotness. ive been mourning tdd samatoki ever since i knew of him and this blue leather jacket is SUCH a good look, and we didnt even have to sacrifice his tits out shirt. it's perfect

jyuto - good!! he looks hot as he should. the red gloves were iconic and will be missed but overall i think i like his new outfit better, it's a little less stuffy looking

rio - an upgrade bc he looks somewhat more like an integrated member of society and less like a permanent navy seal. i like that he got to keep his camo but also wear some normal-ish clothes

ramuda - this seems...p much the same except the jacket changed and he has a hat now? i think its a hat? i dont like the hat. the jacket looks good and i understand why its yellow but... i miss the turquoise... the turquoise and pink was iconic... :[ overall not bad but miss the old 'fit for sure

gentaro - idk i dont look at gentaro enough to know what exactly changed but he looks fancier. i guess he looks better? idk and idrc sorry

dice - SOOOO GOOD. like took all the essence of his og design but makes him look less homeless bc what was that trench coat. he looks so stylish im obsessed

jakurai - idrc about him but i think this outfit is def an improvement bc theres a bit more flair beyond just 'i am a doctor'

hifumi - i like it! white is a good colour on him

doppo - i think its an upgrade!! he looks a bit more loose and comfortable which i think is like...symbolic maybe. and he just looks better. good for him.

rosho - again. i do not like this pattern. his old pattern was better. also he managed to look nerdy but still hot in his old fit now he kinda leans too much into nerdiness??? idk i just do not like it 😭

rei - i mean...it's okay but he looks so. neutralized. like he got an office job or smth. where's the dramatic fur coat and gold accessories and white pants and the red shirt and-- it's an ok outfit but as an official outfit i feel this is definitely a downgrade

ok I want to clarify that I think the first two or three harry potter books are pretty good, and it's when jk rowling tries to get into the worldbuilding stuff (which she isn't very good at) that they fail. what I mean by "harry potter like" is like... a story where there is a secret, somewhat whimsical, and culturally anachronistic magical society that co-exists with our own, and our young everyman protagonist learns they have magical powers and ends up going to school there, and we get to learn about this world as they do, through their eyes. that's a really cool premise!

I think the whimsy is the core trait that appeals to me. like when people joke about someone having a harry potter sounding name, right, that's a real and distinctive aesthetic idea! having everybody named shit like snape and dumbledore and slughorn is, you know, fun! and the anachronism of wizard society kind of reminds me of the anachronism of the vampires in wwdits, which is an aesthetic I really like. so I think this had a lot of potential.

as for what jkr could have done to improve it. well, basically I just think she should have thought her worldbuilding through more. it doesn't need to be lotr-style hard worldbuilding, where every detail is plausibly worked out; in fact I think it shouldn't be. but the way the worldbuilding in the stories is, it just falls apart if you think about it at all, in a way that really hampers one's ability to be like "wow, I am so enraptured by the experience of getting to play make-believe as a kid wizard", which imo is kind of the appeal of the first couple books. as she added more and more stuff, she lost the ability to actually make it all work together. a better route would have been to emulate something like buffy a little more, where you set up this expectation that more-or-less any magical thingy from any mythology ever probably exists somewhere in the world, and human's aren't totally ignorant of magic it's just that we mostly don't believe in it anymore, etc. this just gives you more wiggle room, you know, more room to play with the whimsical and fun premise. rather than trying to do serious worldbuilding poorly.

or, you know, you could do serious worldbuilding with the premise, that could work too if you knew what you were doing! if you actually pulled a jrr! but she didn't.

which is just a long-winded way of saying "do harry potter, but better". kind of like how I think there's no magic formula to make a better sonic game, the problem isn't some specific design choice, it's just that sonic is a poorly executed product now. just make a better sonic game! just make harry potter, but, better!

someone should really try to make a harry potter type story again but like, better. a lot of the ideas it gestures at are pretty compelling but it kind of consistently fumbles the follow-through.

wdym the Faunus discrimination thing sucks? Do you mean it's portrayal or the fact that it exists sucks?

DISCLAIMER: I really like RWBY and I think the show is generally going in the right direction. This just happens to be one part of the show I think is done very badly.

Faunus discrimination is, imo, the worst part of RWBY. It was badly written from the outset and never really improved. My reasoning for thinking it’s badly written mostly comes down to the old writing adage of “show don’t tell”. In a visual medium, this means that the things your viewers actually see on screen are always going to be more impactful than the things they are only told about. i.e. seeing a character defeat a giant monster is a better way to establish that they’re powerful than it is to have everyone in the town square talk about how powerful they are.

When it comes to the Faunus, RWBY does a lot of telling when they should really be showing, and the things they do show us actually serve to weaken the story they’re trying to tell.

1) We are told a lot about the horrific treatment that Faunus endure, but at no point in the story do we ever see it happening. Blake tells us that Schnee Dust Company runs mines where Faunus are forced to work under brutal conditions, but we don’t see a dust mine until V7, and that one’s already been abandoned. We never see so much as a flashback where Ilia’s parents are killed in a mining accident, we’re just told it happened. If you want an example of racism being shown on the show, you might point to Weiss in the last two episodes of V1, but think back to the actual point of contention between Blake and Weiss in those episodes. Sure Weiss expressed a bit of casual racism towards Sun, but the thing that actually set Blake off was Weiss speaking ill of the White Fang, not the Faunus as a whole. When the rest of the team goes looking for Blake after she disappears, Weiss doesn’t seem to care that Blake is a Faunus, she’s just angry that Blake was a member of the White Fang, and is able to put aside their differences as soon as she’s confident that Blake isn’t going back. That doesn’t really show systemic racism so much as it shows that Weiss had a grudge against the White Fang for messing with her family’s shit. The only REAL depiction of gross mistreatment of Faunus we actually see is Adam revealing a cattle brand across his face, which is somewhat undercut by the fact that a) this doesn’t happen until the end of V6 and b) Adam by this point is already an irredeemable villain minutes away from his much-deserved death. If you’re only going to show horrific racism once, why would you have the victim be one of the most hate-able characters on the whole show? And on top of all this, we are told that Faunus are disadvantaged in almost every part of society on Remnant and yet...

2) The Faunus we meet seem to be doing pretty well. Aside from Ilia and Adam, who I’ve already discussed, consider all the Faunus that we actually meet in RWBY. Blake is the daughter of either a big city Mayor or a Head of State depending on how you want to categorize Menagerie, and her family lives in a luxurious island villa. Sun is a carefree goofball who doesn’t seem to have any real grievance against Society™. We see a Faunus as the head of an Academy and another as a member of the Ace Ops. The majority of the Faunus live on Menagerie, which we are told is a bad thing because of overcrowding, but everything we actually see of it makes the island look like an idyllic spot for a tropical vacation. Now I’m not saying that it’s “unrealistic” to have wealthy or successful members of a minority in a society in which that minority is systemically oppressed. America has had 300 years of systemic racism against black people that is still very much a problem, but there are black doctors and lawyers and celebrities and politicians despite this. But showing all these Faunus who really don’t encounter a lot of systemic oppression while reducing all the horrors to background lore gives off the impression that nothing about the lives of the Faunus is made meaningfully harder by virtue of systemic racism. “But Doubleca5t” you might say “What about Velvet? She gets bullied for being a Faunus.” Well the issue with that is...

3) The Faunus discrimination we’re shown implies that the bigotry they face is personal, not systemic. There are very few instances where we see a Faunus actually encounter bigotry, but the issue is, these examples don’t really carry much weight because the source of the problem in these instances is just a few racist individuals rather than any kind of structure or institution. Cardin and his team bully Velvet, but then they also bully Jaune, so we don’t really get a sense that the student body has a racism problem, just that Cardin is a dickhead. A drunk guy yells some racist stuff at Blake in V7, but he’s just some drunk asshole, what reason do we have to think he’s reflective of any broader societal attitudes in Atlas? Seeing Faunus discrimination in RWBY would give you the same impression about racism in Remnant that a lot of liberals have about racism in America: that because all the discriminatory laws have already been abolished, racism isn’t any kind of structural or societal problem and is simply an issue of personal bias. And similar to the average liberal, this means you probably won’t see it as a serious problem that needs addressing.

TL;DR: RWBY wants you to believe that the Faunus are an oppressed minority that faces rampant systemic racism, but the actual content of the show fails to convey this in a way that feels impactful. The writers simply tell you that the Faunus are an oppressed minority and ask you to take their word for it.

i’m literally at the point where i just feel like shutting down // idk if this will make you feel better or worse but I think that's completely understandable bc we're literally in the middle of a pandemic that has caused major disruption to our lives, and a lot of us have also either gotten sick or known people who have gotten sick or even passed away, and it's all unbelievably stressful. and so it's kinda messed up that society expects us all to function normally

like idk if hearing other people are in similar situations will help or not (I'm sorry if it doesn't, I'm ok at it but I'm not great with social stuff, I'm on the spectrum), but my life is a whole mess right now. I think I'm a couple of years older than you so we're similar ages (ish), and I'm also stuck at home with my parents right now, I'm almost entirely closeted and it's causing some issues atm, and don't even get me started on online classes 😭✋. I haven't even been logging in to half of them, I have a group project that I've not even began, I have a lot of extremely important exams in literally a month, and I have not done anything. I don't even know the content.

I went from being top of the class and getting As and A*s to being at the literal bottom of the class and getting Ds and Es during this pandemic. and it's looking extremely likely that I'll fail the year, which is like £10,000 down the drain that I can't afford, and will mean I'll have to change all of my future education/career plans and do something else instead. I haven't been replying to emails, I've been struggling with other mental health issues a lot, etc. I went from functioning before the pandemic to barely functioning at all. and I'm really dreading going back to physical classes next week. people on the spectrum have a hard time dealing with changes, especially major ones, but tbh, even a lot of NT people are feeling thrown off by all of these changes and stressed and having a hard time

so I think I can understand (sort of) how you feel, even though I don't know your specific situation and only you know exactly how you feel, and it just sucks the way that we all have to continue on like everything is normal. imo places of education and workplaces should be providing more mental health support and being a little more relaxed with deadlines and the amount of work expected, but we're in a capitalist hellhole, so 😞

the way I've been trying to get myself through it is just reminding myself that other people are struggling too bc sometimes you really do feel like it's just you and that everyone else is doing fine. and for me personally, it makes me feel comforted almost, knowing that there are other people who know how I'm feeling right now, at least to some extent.

and I just keep reminding myself that we're gonna get through this. like it's an actual nightmare, and it feels like it's going to last forever, but it won't. it's just a really rough period in our lives, but it won't last forever. it's going to settle down eventually, and then we can hopefully get back on track and try to find some sort of plan to move forward from any damage that's been caused.

and for me, I'm also trying to start putting a lot more time into studying by waking up earlier and making to do lists and daily plans, because right now I've been avoiding things for several weeks (if not months), but I'm trying to fight that instinct and work against it

I'm really sorry you're going through a difficult situation too, and I really really hope you feel better soon. I didn't know what to say really because I'm not good at this kind of stuff and sometimes accidentally make people feel worse (😭), but I am really rooting for you and for me and for everyone else that's finding things difficult at the moment, and I really do believe that we can all get through this. and at least there's a vaccine now and things are looking more hopeful on that end. good luck with everything and I hope things improve for you soon!

Howe about meta on what Solas' least favorite choices out of all the quests would have been in DA:O and DA2 and how he would view a Warden or Champion who made that choice

I’ll be going through most of the major quests in the games and explaining why I think he would feel this way. I’m kind of writing it from the perspective that he’s there or witnessing it via memories, rather than hearing about it secondhand.

Redcliffe:

Anything that resulted in Connor dying would gain disapproval.

He would approve of going into the Fade, whether through blood magic or the Circle ritual.

If Connor is allowed to be possessed he would disapprove (assuming the companions even know-- I’ve literally never taken this option).

When you meet Connor in DA:I Solas will express approval if you reassure Connor that what happened wasn’t his fault, and disapprove if you say that they should have killed Connor. Obviously, this indicates a degree of sympathy with Connor’s plight. What he did was obviously not good, but it was a young boy’s reaction to a situation that was out of his control. Given he doesn’t have any negative opinion of blood magic, he would not disapprove of doing the ritual or Isolde’s sacrifice. One of the sillier things about DA:O, imo, is that you can just leave Connor in his room for a week while you do the Circle Tower and return with zero consequences. As players, we know there aren’t any consequences, but as a character Solas wouldn’t, and therefore wouldn’t disapprove if the Warden decided the risk wasn’t worth taking.

Brecilian Forest:

Solas would disapprove of any option that does not end in peace and the curse cured.

He would disapprove if you take advantage of Danyla’s late husband, and if you refuse to kill her.

Again, this is another DA:O quest where I feel the best option is really easy to discover. Given Witherfang is a generally benevolent spirit, Solas would prefer that she were listened to. Attacking her would be seen as foolish, and slaughtering the Dalish camp would be seen as cruel. The latter especially would earn disapproval because you have to convince the werewolves to attack the camp.

Orzammar:

Solas is neutral about which candidate to support.

When it comes to the Anvil he’d be conflicted, and again wind up somewhat neutral.

While Harrowmont is a strict traditionalist and Bhelen more sympathetic to the Casteless, he is also implied to be something of a dictator. Either way, he hates something about them, and in conversations with Wardens about Bhelen may point out a few things: namely, that Bhelen allowing the Casteless to take up arms is just another way of abusing them, that even if their lot improves, he believes it would take nothing short of rebellion to truly change dwarven society. And, given the constant threat of darkspawn such a rebellion may only result in their destruction. In short, shit’s fucked.

The Anvil is a complicated issue and his approval likely would depend upon the logic of the Warden. He can understand the pragmatism, but given he trusts neither future kings, he would point out that preserving the Anvil might spell trouble for the Casteless. All of these feelings are complicated by his racism re: dwarves, although I think if he were able to go through this quest himself it would have challenged a lot of his thinking. His questions to Varric imply that he isn’t as well-versed in Orzammar’s situation as he is others, likely due to their disconnection from the Fade. Actually visiting Orzammar, or even discussing it with someone with a closer connection with it than Varric, would probably be good for him.

Sacred Ashes:

He’d very slightly disapprove about tainting the Ashes.

He prefers the fate of the Ashes to be revealed.

Solas has no faith in the Maker, but he does respect the Guardian’s commitment to guarding the Ashes, and would disapprove of the Warden having to slay him. Meanwhile, the cultists are clearly unhinged and he wouldn’t approve of indulging them.

Circle Tower:

Solas would disapprove of annulling the Circle

I don’t have to explain this one, do I?

Denerim’s Alienage:

Solas would greatly disapprove of giving the slaves away

Again, I feel like I don’t have to explain this one? Solas’s whole thing is anti-slavery, and if he meets with a Warden who did this he would probably refuse to acknowledge them as any hero.

Landsmeet:

Solas would disapprove of making Alistair King

Solas would have conflicted feelings about sparing Loghain

Solas would disapprove of a Cousland crowning themselves

Especially an unhardened Alistair, although even a hardened Alistair he would have concerns about. This was, after all, literally the man who surrendered command to someone who had been made a Warden the night before, who possibly has zero experience in the outside world OR commanding depending on the origin picked. If unhardened he is a reluctant ruler, which Solas finds dangerous. Although this is a decision that could be justified if brought up, especially since Alistair has been king a decade without incident(but if you showed him the letters he sends for the war table missions he’d scoff). Namely, if you noted Alistair’s background as reason for putting his name forward.

As for Loghain, Solas has no true feelings about what happened at Ostagar. He can see the anger, but he can also see why people were grateful for Loghain’s retreat. What Solas cannot abide by is that he sold Fereldan citizens to pay for his war. Also by sparing him you also recruit him into the Wardens, a group which Solas in-game tends to disapprove of. Most options you have to recruit a criminal into the wardens as Inquisitor he disapproves of.

Finally, he would see Cousland putting themselves forward as a candidate as a power grab. Either you have a male Cousland putting himself forward as a partner to Anora, who was already capable of ruling by herself, or you have a female Cousland ousting Anora. And while Solas undoubtedly has his criticisms of Anora, he would also suspect the motivations of any Cousland using the Landsmeet to put themselves in power.

As for what he would think of Wardens who made some or all of these decisions, he would likely think of them similarly to an Inquisitor who makes decisions he disapproves of. Some, like Connor, he would disapprove of, but could gain approval back if during conversations they listened to his opinion on the matter. Others, like the Alienage or the Circle, couldn’t be justified.

I know you asked about DA2 as well, but I’m sticking with Origins because this got away from me.

Idk how old this is (i didn't see your reply come up in my notes at all), but have an honest reply anyway. Note, I understand you're giving an explaination and don't necessarily agree with the behavior of the organizer, these are just my thoughts on the subject at large.

I know some of it is just for teh lulz, but my issue is people deadass believe in contrarian movements like ALM, Straight Pride, White History Month, etc. It's hard to distinguish who's just joking and who genuinely believes in these things. It's a similar issue to people who make really edgy jokes online. You can say you aren't bigoted all you want, but when you make bigoted jokes, you will begin to draw the attention of true bigots who think you're one of them. And all it does is muddy the waters of who is and isn't a bigot to someone on the outside.

These jokey contrarian events are literally no different. There are people who wholeheartedly believe in straight pride, who wholeheartedly believe "well the gays are doing it, why can't we?" It's easy to say "it's all just a joke", but it isn't in its entirety. Maybe on the end of the creator, but I do not doubt for a second some straight people took it seriously.

And tbh people who make contrarian movements like that just to rile people up and try to make it into a gotcha moment are absolutely asanine and miss a lot of the nuance that makes up a given issue. It isn't effective satire, at least not from what I can understand. It would be better and more recognizable as satire if he made this movement to point out a bunch of flaws inherent to the LGBT movement, ie how we eat our own, something about our infinitismal amount of labels, how we go against God's will, whatever. This just makes him look like a tool, imo. Like it's funny to him to completely minimize the issues of real movements and then when the real movements get reasonably upset because they don't know his movement is ~satire~, he thinks he's used their own logic against them, when he... hasn't. Simply making a contrarian movement for the sole purpose of being contrarian and rustling feathers isn't satire. It reminds me of this infamous comic. It isn't exactly one-to-one, but making contrarian movements to use as a gotcha momement minimizes the concerns of groups in a similar fashion.

Polish patriot - aaand that one’s a tough one. There’s so many definitions of this word in a modern use and I actually did spend a fair amount of time even before that ask thinking about what I think it should be, whether I want to call myself that and how or if at all it goes with my ‘silesian patrotism’, ‘european patrotism’ and my rather cosmopolitical view of the world. I could write a few pages long, very bitter and a very personal essay about it and I still doubt I’d have a clear answer ;-; 

What I can tell you, I am middle in a sense, there was a time in Poland when you either were a complete nationalist or you hated Poland and everything’s connected to it and there was nothing in between. I think more and more people doesn’t like to go with any of those sides and I am one of them. Obviously, there’s not a single thing that I have in common with, let’s call it ‘PiS type of patrotism’. There are countries were an average standard of living is better but way more where it’s worse. You can not agree with me on certain aspects but I think you can’t accuse me of trying to colorise stuff cause ‘national pride’ or other bullshit like that or on the other hand demonise just cause I’d personally expect something better. So for example as an atheist, I do recognise tons of too many influences church has on a state, I think conscience clause and the law forbiding hurting somebody’s religious feelings are unacceptable, the religion shouldn’t be in schools (although I already had a discussion here that the sitouation is not that bad as people make it out to be) and that cross in a parliment… well, I don’t really care that much, but it is personal pet peeve. On the other hand… god, guys, I’m not discriminated here because of being an atheist, let alone opressed (srsly… what the fuck?). And Poland is a secular country, come on. 

In that sense, I’m in a middle. Whether that’s enough to be a patriot… idk, I feel like that should be something more, you know? I think being a patroit should mean contributing extra to you community, in a sense - fellow country man. Stuff like organising free extra cirricular activities to kids from poorer faimilies to keep them ‘out of the streets’, leading some non-government organisation, or even such a tiny thing as promoting polish culture and/or history with some tumblr blog, stuff like that. To sacrifice something from yourself, be it your time or whatever else for the community, which here would be defined as Poland.I wish I was such a person, but I’m not, as of now. 

Last, but not least, and kind of… off topic but - I do actually think Polish patrotism is somewhat easy. I’m subscribed to a one ukrainian youtubes and she once openly stated she dislikes Ukraine. And I kinda understood her, if I were from a country that since 89 had a revolution after revolution and the life conditions there did not improve in a slightest, and in many ways probably deteriorated, and there’s literally zero perspectives for any positive change in a near future. If I were on a Euromaidan, or if I were a devouted supporter of it, and I probably would, and the thing I’d get in return was a war and subsequent mass-emigration… I think I’d hate my country too. What helps with Poland imo is that, after 89 we made it. People focus too much on the fact that we’re not on the level of Sweden, France or even Czech Republic, but we weren’t on the level of any of this country thirty years ago, we were on the level of Ukraine, we were around two times poorer than even also post-communist Hungary. Now we’re at the level or even slightly better of than Hungary and I think the amount of Ukrainians in Poland says for itself. You can’t held Poland accountable for what’s happened 1939-1989, but only for what happened here post 1989, and I think what has happened shows that polish society is not hopeless, on a contrary. As much as I am disappointed with probably every single thing that happened here since the last elections, I understand that a peroids of fucking up happen, even if the general direction of changes is upwards. Maybe I’m naive with that, but I still believe people just need those four years of change to realise it’s full of shit and then we’ll come back on a right track. We’ll have to make it up for those four years, but as my physic teachers said ‘we survived worse’ (honestly, i don’t know how many time I said this senetence in the reent years ;-;). If PiS pulls off Fidesz, then… well, a patriot is supposed to stay with their country in the times of need or sth like that, right? And I don’t know if I would. I think my personal feeling that we’re throwing every recent achievment into the dumster might be just too strong.
