@asteraeliana
jrwi community, listen.
I have absolutely NO evidence to support this other than the fact Grizzly notoriously loves tragic lesbians, BUT
The sun and moon goddesses, Lunadeyis and Aster, were TOTALLY in love, right? it would be the most romantic sapphic tragic story ever of mana
like maybe they had a rough break-up and fought about it or something and that caused the funky shit going on??
(I don’t know I haven’t thought this out I just think the sun and moon are/were smooching)
PLUS that’s like a common story of the sun and moon in some cultures/religions, right? I swear I’ve heard tales of it before
c’mon grizzly pleasepleaspleasplelepalsls we can’t get enough tragic yuri here

⧼Random Norse mythology ship head cannons: Frigg x Fulla⧽
Back with another ship to add into the series, that I believe some of you have actually heard about! Oh Frigg and Fulla, my tragic little lesbians.. You deserved better. Maybe in another life time 😔
Feel free to use these for your own ideas, I'm simply making this series to show support to random ships we create, basing things off on what we in sources of finds and yes! I'm gladly feeding into them all. ✨
༻𓊈Head cannons 𓊉༺
How did they met?
Fulla was one of Frigg's handmaidens, like many other Ásynjur goddesses, but she held a special role in personally attending to Frigg’s needs. Fulla kept Frigg entertained with engaging conversations, assisted her in managing daily tasks, and took care of her footwear. Their relationship grew more intimate when Frigg, feeling neglected by Odin and hurt by his infidelities, sought solace in Fulla.
This comfort soon blossomed into a romantic relationship. Frigg finding reassurance in knowing that Fulla genuinely cared for her when her husband did not. Meanwhile, the devoted and loyal Fulla, deeply enamored with Frigg, considered herself fortunate to serve and love her lady without hesitation or complaint.
Their dynamic!
They might have a big difference in power dynamic but Frigg never takes advantage of her status, especially not against Fulla. If anything she makes sure Fulla, despite being a servant gets the same treatment as her!
While both Frigg and Fulla love to chat and gossip. Fulla finds herself to be the one listening most of the time.
Fulla from the very start was always so smittend by Frigg's beauty and grace.
Every night Fulla found herself treassuring everything they shared together, excited to see her again.
Sadly when their relationship became romantic, they had to keep it a secret from most of the aesir.
That way Odin wouldn't find out about it and unleash his wrath upon the two.
The two ladies would only be open about their relationship with certain people like: Gná, Hlín, Lofn, Sjofn, Baldr, Nanna, Hodr and Hermod.
The wodden box Fulla holds is very symbolic, containing not only the truth about their relationship but all of Frigg's most precious secrets.
Fulla takes her role as not only Frigg's handmaiden but as the protector of Frigg's secrets very seriously. She would rather die where she stands then tell.
Fulla wears a golden band around her free hair, it being a gift from Frigg. (Gylfaginning Chap.35 reference)
To others it symbolic of Fulla being a virgin, a lady in waiting but little do they know the real meaning behind it.
It's a way to keep Fulla out of harms way and from prying eyes of men. That way, Frigg can protect that she holds dearest! It being almost a similar case to Baldr.
The very few times when Frigg could travel, she brought Fulla with her. Unable to stay away from her even when she had free time to do as she pleased.
On more than one occasion they had to say they were "found sisters" because of how close and affectate they were.
The two women also practiced seidr together, it turning into a intimate ritual between them whenever they were alone. (Second merseburg incantation)
Baldr might have been the favorite son of Odin, but it Fulla who had delivered and together with Frigg, had raised her sons when they were young children!
Because Odin was an absent father in the early days, always traveling. Frigg found herself struggling through motherhood alone without him!
But since Fulla lived in their hall, she was able to aid her lady in need, making their bond even more closer.
The woman was a passionate and caring step-mother, somehow made to manage three wild playful children.
She would also pay special attention to little Hodr, helping him navigate through the world and teaching him how to read runes with his fingers.
Fulla wouldn't dare call herself the mother to any of Frigg's children, in fear to disrespect Odin. But Hermod, Hodr and Baldr view things a little differently.
They absolutely adore Fulla, secretly seeing her as a second mother.
Even accepting her as a part of their family, not just because she helped take care for them but because she deserved their mother's love and affection.
When Baldr started having nightmares, both the ladies were worried sick, knowing through the prophecies Frigg had spoken about it could be time.
Fulla was the one to offer to comfort their family, while Frigg was out.
Once Frigg had lost not only one son, but two. Fulla felt protective over her lady more than ever, refusing to let anyone near them! Not even Odin.
They'd spent days just laying in Fulla's bed, trying to grieve in each other's arms. Frigg didn't even care what Odin thought, all she needed was Fulla.
But even in death Nanna and Baldr would not be forgotten as they gave gifts back to their family, even Fulla. (Gylfaginning chap. 49 reference)
The pet names Frigg gave Fulla are:
"Hirðmey" (court maiden) "Gullband" (golden band) "Fríðr" (beautiful)
While Fulla's pet names for Frigg is:
"Hjartkona" (heart-woman/wife) "Ástvinur" (beloved friend) "Min drottning" (my queen)
Random trivia on the ship!
Their ship name is Frulla!
Frigg is a dominant switch, while Fulla is a power bottom. They're both gentle and soft lovers.. Very wholesome!
I always imagined Frigg being bisexual, because I truly do believe she loved Odin until he cheated. Fulla is obviously painted to be a lesbian in my opinion.
They give off ''forbidden lovers'' vibes!
Songs that remind me of them!
"They're singing about how they'll keep their secrets until the end of days and they don't appreciate people who snitch! Dangerous duo I must say~"
"Frigg singing about how much she wants to be with her dear "friend" Fulla, but she's too scared to make it too obvious that she likes the goddess back."

Cookie Run headcanons except i’m obsessed with the ancients, i’m insane and i make weird family trees
Plus some extras under the cut
- I like the idea of Moonlight being Lily and Clover’s other mom, y’all know, two lesbian gods, their god-like child and their funky music son.
- Adding to this, Clover often talks about his family in his songs, hoping to meet one of them one day. Poor boy he misses his mom and sister:(
- Before her dissapearance, Golden Cheese had the opportunity to meet Mango; he was very young at the time so he would follow them everywhere she go, and Ananas gave her the nickname mom duck.
- White Lily knew she wasn’t the role model her brother needed, so after what happened with her mother she left Clover in an orphanage/convent, promising that she would send him letters every day. She kept up her promise for a few years until she became an ancient hero.
- If we consider that maybe the Dark Flour War happened centuries ago, Clover would be inmortal in a "i'm pretty much a normal guy with the exception i can't die of age or sickness" kinda way. So yeah he would be like- super old but he still has a young adult's body
- Mango sometimes asks Ananas about what happened to Golden Cheese, and even though they tell him that she is fine, he knows that not even his father knows what happened to them.
- Ananas hid Cheese for a long time after she was born, feathered dragons were viewed with distaste among their race, so they took her with the cheesebirds to make them their leader.
- Pitaya allows Lotus to stay in Holly’s kingdom even with their territorial behaviour, they know Lotus mourned their daughter’s “death” during a long time and now that she’s back they both deserve to work on their issues.
- Lotus and Hollyberry dynamic is some “i left her alone in the woods all by herself when she was a child to test her sense of direction and i’m not ashamed to admit it” and “the only one allowed to piss off my mom is ME” kinda thing. A big love/hate relationship.
- Ah yes, the good ol' mommy issues strike again.
- Hollyberry has a great singing voice, Lotus cherish that aspect of her in secret.
- Frost Queen raised Cacao after he was left in the woods to die as a baby after being "the victim of a curse" (his parents were just idiots), and she took him in as her son. I see her making some kind of ritual to bond Cacao with her, y'know, adoption with extra steps.
- Linked to this we can see my other hc where Cacao was like a Frozen Child that died and reborned in a "normal" body because he was fated to be an ancient hero and shit like that.
- And in general i just like the concept of grim reaper deity and her inmortal child with severe trauma he bottles up, him becoming a legend in a harsh and traumatic way and leaving this deity without the only living being her deadly touch can't affect. (Add some mourning and maybe an emotional/mental breakdown after a reunion and you get a completely healthy mother with her son)
- If we expand this to Choco, he would have been shocked at the fact the goddess his kind use to pray to is his grandmother, his father is just a frozen forest spirit that reached godhood after endless trials and trauma and he himself is a demigod with a tragic fate, yeah what a family he has.
"do you remember Frost Queen?"
"she's my mom"
"yeah, why?"
"... so you're telling me that there's a goddess of death out there..."
"yup"
"we pray to and worship often, and we are related to her"
"exactly"
"and that makes us... GODS?!"
"only me, but my body is technically just a vessel to protect my soul, which is inside the souljam at the same time ironically, and my trials made me reach a god-like status, meanwhile you're like a demigod"
"sweet gods" (and Choco forgot that conversation for his own sanity)
- The reason Millenial Tree and Pure Vanilla have such a conflicted relationship is because Millenial practically left his son to be raised by other people while he focused in his godly duties, so Wind Archer took care of Vanilla instead.
- After years of constant neglect by his father, Vanilla ran away and became a shepherd at a very young age, not that he was alone, Archer kept an eye on him for as long as he could until he entered the academy, that was where Vanilla was separated from his protector for many years until he became an ancient hero.
- It was not that Millenial had not loved his son, he loved him too much in fact, but to protect him from the evils he had to face, he pushed him away and left him in the forest, where the god believed he would be safe, but Vanilla ran away from him instead.
- After the Dark Flour War Millenial searched for any clue that could lead him back to his son, It would take decades for him to hear from Vanilla, now Healer Cookie, again.
- If i had to choose a dynamic for them, it would be "a broken family trying to fix itself, only to fall apart every time". Sad.
- But not everything is bad my kids, they eventually meet again and Millenial has a second chance to be the father his son needed, Vanilla is not thrilled by this at all.
#millenial tree cookie#Pure Vanilla Cookie#frost queen cookie#dark cacao cookie#sea fairy cookie#white lily cookie#clover cookie#ananas dragon cookie#golden cheese cookie#mango cookie#lotus dragon cookie#hollyberry cookie#also english is not my first language so sorry for any spelling mistakes lmao

do you have any thoughts on malenia yet? she's one of my favourite characters
I haven't gotten to her yet but tbh what I've seen of her in-game paired with all the hate she's gotten from people who think she's problematic for rotting Caelid already has me obsessed with her shchsh. From what I've seen of her so far tho, she's a very proud, tragic character and I love her.
Here are some questions/thoughts I have so far that I'm hoping to get answered:
-She's an Empyreon, but she seems to have shirked the title of lord in favor of simply serving her twin. If that's the case, then where are her Fingers? What of her shadow? Ranni slew hers, for she did not want to be their pawn, and Malenia seems just as prideful as Ranni. I rlly wanna know what tf happened with that, esp. since her 'curse' outright devours Erdtree avatars and the like
-It's quite fascinating how she has this internal struggle with her own aspect, terrifying though it is. Tbh I feel like her surpressing it has caused more problems in the long run, but I'm intruigued by the nature of the Rot and how it contrasts with the parasitic wasp vibes I get from Miquella. Its probs just a different form of parasitic fevor taking the form of mushrooms, but it overcomes via brute force rather than luring is victims, which might mirror how Malenia deals with something vs Miquella; by punching the everloving fuck out of things instead of luring them close and methodically taking them apart. She's more outright scary, but they're both terrifying in their own right
-The fact that she's lost most of her limbs and yet is still undefeated in battle is hella sexy ngl. Love me a proud warrior queen, Rahdan fans stay losing (jk I love Rahdan). Also her rotting Caelid honestly isnt that big of a deal, Caelid already looked like hell from what details we saw in the trailer. She just added a cherry on top of the shit sandwich
-Still losing my mind over the fact that she's the product of godly parthinogenesis tbh. Up until last night I thought Miquella and Malenia were of the Radagon/Rennala pairing, not Radagon/Marika. It does explain why they have so many problems tho lmao, considering Marika's...everything.
-This is entirely bc of Cleanrot Knight Finley, but she gives off massive lesbian vibes. There's simply no heterosexual explaination for any of that shhdjsj
-Fuck whatever people think of her pride and battle prowess and my lowkey fear of Miquella, her being so doting over him and him fighting so hard to save her is super damn cute. I hope we get dlc where Miquella emerges from his pupation in all his beautiful terrifying insectile glory and just totally wrecks ass once he hears what we did to Malenia
-This is entirely theoretical given the fact that I haven't beaten the game yet, but I theorize that the whole unleashing of Destined Death thing that Ranni is trying to do will actually make Melania a really important goddess in the future. Fungi terrify the everloving shit out of me, but rot is generally a massively important facet of getting rid of dead things, so I think we kinda need her power around
-Her aesthetic fucks the hardest in the entire game. Don't @ me its true

The 19th Century Gay Vampire Love Story
Yep, you read that title correctly. In honor of Halloween may I present an obscure little treasure known as “Manor” by Karl Heinrich Ulrichs. Written in 1885 as a part of his “Sailor Stories”, it recounts the romance between the teenage boy Har and a teen sailor, the eponymous Manor. Set in the Foroe Islands, Manor rescues Har from drowning at sea, and the boys become inseparable friends and lovers. When Manor dies tragically, Har begs all the gods to do something, and Urda, a Norne from Norse mythology, complies, returning Manor to half-life as a vampire. Back from the grave, Manor and Har rekindle their love. I won’t spoil the ending, but it’s a genuinely romantic story written around the same time as Dracula and Carmilla, yet hasn’t gotten the same recognition. So, I’m shining the spotlight on it, and encouraging you all to seek it out for yourself for some positive queer media from before the 20th century.
A little fun facts about Ulrichs, he used Aphrodite to categorize sexual orientations based on the variations of Aphrodite. He used Uranus’ sexless begetting of Aphrodite as the basis for his terms for gays (Urning), lesbians (Urninden), and bisexuals (Uranodioning), while Aphrodite’s sexual begetting by Zeus and Dionne as his basis for the terms for heterosexuals (Dioning). These terms relate to the two aspects of Aphrodite. Aphrodite Urania, the sexless being of unconditional love as the child of Uranus, and Aphrodite Pandemos, the lustful goddess of fertility and desire as the child of Zeus and Dione. He was also open to the concept of Intersex people, though he addressed them as Third Sex. If we transliterate, I could easily see his terminology resurfacing as Uranic, Uradionic, and Dionic in English. I’m all for reading a steamy Uranic romance novel.

TSC READ:
Tobias is SOOOOO BORING.
Also I do not like how long we are taking to get into the story, like I thought I was long-winded
Ah Naomi, the fridging of women in Fantasy continues, bets on how many times she’s brought up as a tragic backstory? Anyone?
THAT WAS JUST CHAPTER ONE? UGHHHHHHHHH
We’re on chapter two and I’m already at 1.5x speed
OH NO “Toby’s Not like Other GuysTM”
Okay but why? Why was Toby chosen?
This whole thing feels weirdly objectifying, and I know it’s the point but like so far it hasn’t been explored
This is such a cool premise and yet it takes us three chapters to get to the actual story.
No shade to the narrator but like I cannot understand some of his accents sometimes
HOLY SHIT THERE’S A PEDOPHILE JOKE? NUH UH
The whole vine sequence is...cluttered at best and absolutely incomprehensible at worst
Oh wow, also fat phobia? The idea that a woman cannot be fat because she’s the savior and goddess of the world? IN ANCIENT GREECE?
“cunt is everywhere, cunt is cheap” that is a literal line in this book, feel real empowered Jenna.
We are not even three chapters in and we already got pedophile jokes and fat phobia, jfc.
SPIDERS NO, KEEP THEM AWAY
I knew Milo was gonna die and like...even though he was one of the good ones his death didn’t feel like it mattered all that much. Like it wasn’t emotional at all.
Also following it up with “you fucking shit” is not a good way to show emotion.
This really just feels like “Misogyny: the book”
Ah yes, if I saw someone who looked like they got into a fight I’d automatically assume they started it and killed three men as well.
“I’m a bit of an acquired taste” *rolls eyes and mentally checks out*
Even though I know who Leila is, I desperately wish she was just a regular old healer. Like that would’ve been so much better than what we got.
So like....Kaleo’s gay right? And he’s exclusively in love with Tobias right?
The narrator’s voice reminds me of Prince Charming from Shrek and that is how I choose to envision Kaleo now.
You know for a Lesbian, Delphi really does talk a lot about how hot these men are
OH MY GOD STOP SAYING APOLOGIES I WANT TO KILL MYSELF

What are some things that other Silent Knight fans do that annoys you or get wrong about the pairing?
Before I start this Please know I'm no queen. I don't pretend to think myself a goddess sitting upon a pedestal of all Silent Knight knowledge I am flawed and biased just like everyone else Everything that followers are just the opinions of a bored, over educated, lesbian that enjoys literature themes and tragic love

Here, also, is this post: https://rwby-sk.tumblr.com/post/636420351110332416/i-might-lose-followers-for-this-but-if-i-do-ill I repost it from time to time. Excellent read

Things other shippers do that annoy me?
Well
Here we go:
There are the dude-bro, toxic masculinity, harem protagonist, self-insert Jaune fans. I hate them on principle. But when they interfere with a ship I like it crosses a line! I will fight tooth and nail to keep Jaune the sweet, dumb, strategically brilliant, socially awkward himbo he is
Similarly, anyone who sees Neo and reduces her to either A) an awful serial killer/assassin with no morals or B) a horny kinky hot mess Neo is a very dynamic character with a fairly grey moral compass but with understandable motives. There is so much personality in her character that people just choose to ignore because writing a sexy, stabby, thief is easier
Writing these characters well, (much like writing Blake, Yang, Ruby, or Weiss well) requires you to really look at their pasts. Understand who the character is. Don't just look at how they acted in chibi that one time. Look at all of it. The pain. The baggage. The issues. The friendships. The happy moments. You don't need to know a character inside and out to be a good writer/content creator, but it really helps
-
Smaller things specifically that I can't stand? - Jaune immediately forgetting about Pyrrha / going after Neo right away - Either Jaune or Neo talking bad about Pyrrha or Roman - Neo using her semblance to look like Pyrrha (for any reason other than letting Jaune say goodbye to Pyrrha one last time with his permission) - Jaune dressing like Roman - Neo killing or hurting innocent people (We've only seen her knock out a few cops. Yeah she threatens murder all the time, but she never follows through) - Jaune being stronger / faster than Neo. That's a whole thing that blew up a few weeks ago. Neo is the better fighter. She would win in a fight. Like. Come on - Forgetting that Jaune is fine with some crime as long as no one gets hurt (Like stealing an airship / transcript forging) - Limiting Neo to only facial expressions when texting and sign language is RIGHT THERE - Making Jaune angry, about anything other than Cinder. That boy doesn't have a mean bone in his body! He would never yell at Ruby or Neo or anyone! He had that breakdown at Cinder but I think that one was understandable. Also that time he was pissed at Ozma. For making Pyrrha force herself to be the Fall Maiden / ultimately making her martyr herself fighting Cinder, etc etc for a cause Ozma can’t even win. So, also understandable
-
As a footnote; I also rarely read RWBY fanfics because the characterization is always so hit or miss. And honestly the second I see poor word choice / sentence structure I turn into a highschool english teacher and I can't stay in the story. I start fixing grammar issues or think about how to change words that are repeated too often. Don't get me started on smut scenes I swear!!!

seeing everyone talk about hoo rewrite hc’s i would like to join and add a few hehe
- i won’t reiterate what everyone’s been saying bc they’re all correct and right (no frazel, no racist/sexist shit about piper, hazel, reyna) no forced outing of nico, no weird “i’m alpha” shit between jason & percy, and overall better leo’s whole arc etc...
- i would swap annabeth’s godly parent (so pjo rewrite) i think having her being a daughter of nike (a minor goddess) would be far more interesting/is fitting for her! her desire to be first, number 1, always win, and having her pride and need for victory be a part of who she is! and in pjo she would have been in the hermes cabin thus making her relationship w luke stronger, therefore making his betrayal hurt that much worse (also for fun in hoo she’d have a crush on piper and play into the whole cocky yet nervous daughter of nike who only wants to be the number 1 in piper’s heart hehe)
- instead i would want to put a black child of athena i think that them within the story would be so interesting and their intelligence is not only of extreme use, but they can offer strategies and ways to get out of dire situations in the skip of a heartbeat! plus i think they’d be great friends w leo & hazel!
- i would like to add more minor/underworld/primordial god kids! i wanna see children of eros (primordial), thanatos, hecate, nemesis, nike, hebe, hypnos, erebus, nyx etc... i think they’d be SO much cooler than to see just kids of the 12 olympians and to see how some of them interact w the 7 + nico & reyna! (son of eros & thanatos & hecate interacting w nico and hazel - son of eros helping nico, son of hecate helps hazel to control the mist, son of thanatos being friends w nico & hazel and feeling a connection w them? daughter of nemesis battling w her internal of struggle whether she hates percy or not and how she’s seen how it’s affected her brother? son of hebe being best friends with leo and relates to his fun spunk? son & daughter of erebus being the antithesis of jason yet seeing his kindess and respect and how he subverts their ideals of a how a son of jupiter/zeus would act? children of nike meeting frank & reyna and look at how strong & good at combat they are and seeing future sparring partners?
- i am. a narcissus apologist he deserves a better and well rounded character arc - i want to see him full of anger sadness and despair and how demigods feel the guilt of fighting him and forcing him to look into his reflection and see him sob bc it’s too much and he didn’t deserve to be held down for eternity! here’s @hazelmagix’s take on it: here’s one, and another, and it makes me sad
- eros is the protector of homosexual love! it would have been better to see him protect and speak to nico and give him advice - he protects young men! it would have been different to see this side of him rather than the mischievous terrifying one the gods know (as the god are actually frightened by eros) and also! no thanatos in chains!
- if you’ve read tsoa then this is for you but for the curse of achilles scene i wanted tsoa!achilles so bad omfg seeing a young man who is the cautionary tale of bearing the curse and who’s THE most famous and one of the most tragic demigods (and how he’s the opp. spectrum of percy bc he let go of his humanity and therefore losing everything he knew and loved) and having percy recognize that would have been heartwrenching and how achilles not only lost his life & honor but something more important to him aka PATROCLUS!
- for fun i wanna see a “sons of apollo” group that has a fun rivalry w the “hunters of artemis” that has so substance for bettering hoo it’s just something i wanna see JDJDJDJD and also........ let the hunters have lesbians! people have pointed out how it’s ridiculous to kick them out and also that they’re all so young so artemis has to make sure that they wanna join which would change the concept fundamentally! i think hunter thalia meeting praetor amazon reyna would have been insanely cool and them being gf’s!
- i love valgrace! i’d love to have seen it! peak friends to lovers trope but first and foremost leo learns how to find self love and be secure in himself and his friends help him! so does the son of eros & son of hebe & hazel & piper! and i wanted to see certain friendships within the two camps like percy & leo, jason & annabeth, piper & will, hazel & charlie, piper & silena, the stoll brothers and dakota, frank & clarisse etc...
- not me realizing that i didn’t add iconic takes from @bunkernine & @hazelslevesquee! caitlyn the foremost icon of the TLH trio her takes are over here! and pearl already has ideas about hazel :’)
- i wanted octavian to be an absolute BASTARD, complete antagonist, just despicable! one of my fav scenes of his was when he told percy that he hoped the roman brand hurt which is entirely fucked up and dark and i love a villainous character! he was a little bitch in hoo when he deserved to be a bad bitch! a legacy of apollo who has the worst qualities of apollo himself and who the “sons of apollo” consider an absolute travesty to the name of their patron!
- the gaea fight bro......... what was that??? we needed TENSION, I WANTED ACTION, SHE’S A PRIMORDIAL GODDESS AND IS SUPER POWERFUL! we should have that battle be even more dangerous and tension filled than the battle of kronos and were ROBBED! we should have seen aphrodite’s war side, the extent of damage the big three kids could do, minor god kids weren’t considered to be all that strong but are LETHAL in battle! i wanted sm more from this battle it was WEAK in the books smh we deserved better! and there’s probably way more i’d change but my brain is no thots head empty rn but that’s all i have for now hehe

The clock still ticks on, And time still goes on. If I could have, I would have stopped time so many times. But that’s beyond my power. And so I deal with the world, The cruel reality.
I grasp onto the hand of the one whom I love, My death seems to be nearing, So for her sake, I ask she doesn’t feel sad, For the release of death feels cathartic After a life of twists and turns. Tragedies and even a few happy moments. The clock continues to tick, And as the seconds go by, My death continues to grow near.
Maybe I’m just pessimistic, Ha, that seems like an apt description; You’d become that way too after 5 whole years of wondering- Killing- Murderering- A life of little meaning. But now I feel the urge to smile, For now that I have my children and wife with me, I think I could say that I am “happy”.
The clock ticks on and the world seems to slow. My heartbeat diminishes, And my eyes feel the urge to close. I hear the soft sobs of my beautiful wife. Her blue eyes fill with tears and they then stain my blanket. My children surround me, My sisters not daring to lag behind. It’s been years now since that day, The day we won the war. And now I think it’s time to say “Goodbye”.
Eyes filling with tears, I say my last words: “I love you all.” And as my life slips away, I smile and- A tear falls as I close my eyes…
~~~~~~
Ok, so heres another “pseudo lyric” thing. This is the last song Cora Hallow, one of my characters, made at the end of her life. She actually didn’t physically write it herself, as she wrote it when she was on her deathbed. Cora’s wife, Lillian, acted as a ghost writer for her, writing these lyrics for a piano composition Cora had finished before she became so sick she couldn’t leave her bed.
I don’t know if I told you about Cora before, but I’ll tell you about her character anyways even if I did:
Since as far as Cora could remember, she loved to play the piano. She lived and breathed music. However, her parents discouraged her to focus on anything other than becoming a “perfect wife”. You see, Cora’s parents (specifically her mother) were nobility who had been kicked out of their noble house due to how distantly related they were (in the Vesper Empire, where Cora is from, the farther related you are to the main branch of your noble house, the less “noble” you are) to the main branch. And so Cora’s parents wanted to marry her to the heir to one of the “big time” noble houses, such as House Mariah, however, first off, Cora’s a lesbian, and second off, she had no interest in getting married to a man she didn’t even know. Also, Cora had 4 little sisters, Seraphine Hallow, Alia Hallow, and later, twin sisters Elysia and Briella Hallow (remember these four!).
Cora only found solace with her great aunt, Alena, the sister of her father’s father, who was the one to teach her how to play the piano better as Cora was originally teaching herself. Cora was really close with Alena, as she never shunned her for liking girls or not being “wife material”.
Cora honestly just despised her parents and often argued them. However as she grew older, in order to avoid their verbally abusive ways, she started to ignore them and avoid them whenever possible instead of actively fighting back. she also didn’t want to traumatize her younger sisters, though they ended up traumatized in other ways in the future anyways, and her parents fought together often, and there wasn’t much she could do about it except take her sisters away from the scene of the fight.
Cora also taught herself how to use a lance, and as she grew older she would become a extremely capable fighter.
And now we arrive at the fateful year of 1545 T.C. (Cora is 17 by this point).
Originally the day seemed like a perfectly normal one, but soon Cora caught glimpse of a strange looking person wearing a cloak with strange symbols, and before she knew it, the person had used fire magic to set the town ablaze. Cora was unable to make it anywhere near where she knew her sisters were, and ended up having to flee to save herself.
Later during the night, she returned to the village only to find it just a pile of ashes. only the house that were made of stone or some other nonflammable material were still standing. The town was littered with corpses, most pitch black and burnt beyond recognition. She found her parents’ bodies, and, well, upon seeing them, she froze, and then, walked away. She honestly didn’t care. They had shunned her and hated her for almost everything she did that they deemed was not “wife-material”.
Despite not being able to find her younger sisters’s bodies, she thought they were dead, and this event traumatized her beyond repair. She ended beginning to wander Theda, staying with several different people who were willing to take her in for varying periods of time. Soon, she found out that a cult worshipping the goddess Nymeria (though Nymeria was not at all affiliated with them and despised them) were the ones behind the fire of Saseraia (her home town), and massacred everyone in the cult upon finding their hide out. After that she became a wandering vigilante, killing criminals, both suspected and convicted.
For the next 5 years she spent her days making friends and enemies and betraying people, but overall was a lone wolf in a sense. She eventually wandered her way to Windsor, the capital of the Kingdom of Solenne, where she ended up finding out the her younger sisters Seraphine (now 17), and Alia (now 13), were alive.
After a lot of twists turns she ended up becoming one of the generals of the Thedian Resistance Army, who were fighting against Nymeria and her cronies’ corrupt ways. Eventually the war is won in the Thedian Resistance’s favor and a new system is set up to replace Nymeria’s. Cora marries Lillian Winchester (a fellow Thedian Rebel who Cora had been slowly falling in love with) and then adopt three children. Cora becomes a musician, writing songs and making compositions. Most of her songs had a fire or time theme, and many of her songs told a story that was in general tragic and without a happy ending. Of course, this happened after she finally retired from the mercenary group she and Seraphine ran together when she was 43.
Finally, at the age of 69, Cora passes away peacefully, surrounded by her children, wife, and 4 younger sisters, and those younger sisters’ children and even some grandchildren.
Her sisters, Lillian, and her sisters’ spouses would follow her to death within the next decade, and in their world, the phrase “When one dies, the others follow.” would originate because of her, Lillian, her younger sisters’ and their spouses all dying within the same decade.
Cora was in general a person who was quiet and calm, but before the war, she was far more cold and distant. she was stuck on the fact she couldn’t protect her sisters and save them from the fire (even though they all did survive it but she didn’t know at the time) and even when she found out they were all alive the traumatic experience just couldn’t be forgotten. Lillian certainly helped her open up more, but even so through out her life she had nightmares of the fire of Saseraia, and sometimes would go through a depressive episode where she hid away from everyone and hauled herself up in the music room of her home. She, however, produced some of her greatest songs during those depressive episodes, so I suppose there is a silver lining there.
Cora, At Age 58 ^
“Thank you for loving me, Lillian, and for being there for me throughout all these years.” - Cora, 1582 T.C., Age 58, To Lillian On Their 30th Year of Marriage Anniversary. —Submission
Can everyone relax and get a hug for five minutes because everything that I hear makes me wanna cry or scream or both; but I mean this in the nicest and most compliment-y way because I just adore how detailed the world building is over here. An Online Book of Shadows!
Post 1!
Apollo
Also known as: Apollon, Apellon, Phoebus, Apollo, Aplu.
So, I’m pretty sure we’ve all heard of Apollo; the Golden Boy of the Olympian Pantheon. He is a spirit of healing, hunting, music, poetry, and prophecy. Although he never really took over Helios’ function(s), he definitely does overshadow him(I’ll have another post up on Helios soon). Apollo radiates such dazzling charisma that he was eventually venerated a solar deity.
To call someone an “Apollo,” is to imply that they are blindingly handsome. He is a beautiful killer. He is a master healer because he is a master of epidemic, plague, and disease. He’ll lift and inflict them as he pleases. He attacked the Greeks with a plague during the Trojan War; and it can be argued, I think, that he got a little “trigger happy,” with the possibility of WWIII breaking out(COVID-19 is what I’m referencing). He is also blamed for sudden deaths; as his arrows kill instantly.
Now; let’s talk about some of his myths!
“...the birth of Apollon. In her wanderings the...goddess Leto visited all the mountains and islands of Greece...They(the inhabitants) all feared to receive the mighty god who was about to be born. They were all richer than the little, unfruitful island crag of Delos, to which Leto now appealed…”(page 113, The Gods of the Greeks, C. Kereny.)
This myth is arguably the most popular one regarding Apollo’s origin. Leto, who was one of Zeus’ many conquests, was trying to hide from Hera(Zeus’ jealous wife). However, Apollo is also described as coming from a land in the North, which would be Hyperborea. Alternative myths say that Apollo and his mother arrived in Greece in the form of wolves; one myth saying that Leto traveled alone as a pregnant wolf.
Hyperborea’s location has never been identified; nor is it clear if the place exists in the physical realm. I personally believe that its location is in the Spirit realm. But, there’s this one theory that suggests that it’s in the extreme north, near the Arctic Circle. There are just so many conflicting theories that this post would take forever to get through if I were to list out all of them! But, if you truly would like to know the others; just let me know, and I’ll be happy to share.
Apollo is the Greek male deity with the greatest number of male lovers. In general, his relationships with men are happier than his relationships with women. Apollo is the patron and sponsor of young men, teaching them music, divination, and various sports.
He does not have an official “wife,” as most of the women he pursues flee from him. Which I find quite odd… Especially for that time period. He’s incredibly handsome, brilliant, rich, and royal(not to mention, an actual god). But, alas; some run from him, while others commit suicide rather than submit to him. The others who don’t flee, meet a tragically fatal end anyway. What’s going on?
If we take a much closer look at this phenomenon; the women he pursues are rarely mere mortals. Although now trivialized as Nymphs or princesses, many of them were powerful goddesses. The big three Olympians; Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades, all “married” female deities to cement their own right to power. Apollo’s path to power, on the other hand, is reminiscent of the character Sylar from the television series, Heroes. He absorbs and takes over the powers of others. Once he killed the Serpent at Delphi, for example, he could then appear/manifest as a snake.
Apollo protects his devotees and their cattle and livestock. He is loyal to those he loves. Apollo is a master healer who can heal anyone except those he, himself has slain. He’s the spirits’s doctor, too, healing them when they are ailing
Ghost of You (SC Titanic, Zetta x Adele)
So this is my very first SC Titanic fanfic: I am excited to post it and well I suppose I should warn you that probably Zetta x Adele fictions will be rather long as this love story features themes that are very dear and meaningful to me, such as 1. well, obviously the Titanic story, 2. references to beginning of the century cinema (love very old and b&w movies), 3. sapphism and 4. femminism/suffragette movement. It’s basically everything I could have ever asked for. The Gentleman Jack fans out there might find a reference here...
So here I tried to imagine what brought Zetta to write that little note to Adele after basically disappearing. Loved that scene and I had to try and portray her turmoil, her missing Adele but also, as any historical lesbian (maybe not only historical), fearing the strings of society and their effect on their love and her beloved suffragette. Hope you enjoy it!
Disclaimer: I quoted some pieces of dialogue from the original book
________________________
Two rapid knocks on the door then:
“Are you there, doll? Can I come in?”
Richard’s voice abruptly brought Zetta’s back to reality, involuntarily making her jump in her seat. She blinked twice as if wakingg from a dream and took a quick look around. She couldn’t recall how long she had been sitting at her vanity lost in her thoughts with a brush in her hand. She just couldn’t focus that day as she was haunted by memories of the past. But Richard didn’t have to know, mustn’t have to know. She put down the brush and quickly fixed her hair before adjusting her robe to limit the skin exposure to the minimum: after all, they weren’t married yet…and her heart didn’t belong to Mr. King. Only after that, she answered loud enough to be heard on the other side of the ebony door:
“Sure, darling”
She resumed her interrupted makeup session, pretending to be fully taken by that routine that didn’t bring her the usual joy anymore. She looked at herself in the mirror and put on a practiced smile: it would have been enough to fool her fiancé.
Richard entered her boudoir and theatrically opened his arms as a seasoned professional: he mentioned that he started as an actor before becoming a stellar director.
“My love, every time I see you I’m completely blinded by your beauty. You’re the brightest star in the sky, even brighter than Venus itself” he said moving closer and kneeling beside her chair.
“…And you’re gonna be the most radiant woman at the party tonight. The belle of the ball, la plus belle” he added, courtly taking her free hand and placing a kiss on her knuckles.
He looked up at her with a dashing smile.
“Trés charmant, Richard…but are you done with poetry?” she smirked, retrieving her hand and resuming her previous core.
“Ah, la belle dame sans merci!” Richard exclaimed before falling back to the floor holding a hand on his chest.
“Silly” Zetta laughed and she was soon joined by Richard who stood again and leaned on her table.
“I can’t help it around you, doll, apologies” he shrugged, flashing her another smile.
Zetta had to summon all her acting expertise not to cringe at “doll”. She hated it when every fiber of her being when Richard -or any other men- called her “doll”. Even her first director called her so, even her husband…doll, as if that was all she was to them: a beautiful toy, maybe a collectible but not truly a woman. Not truly Zetta.
Instead, she mirrored his smile and threw him a quick look before methodically applying some rouge on her cheek.
“So, what are you dying to say that can’t wait?”
“Seeing you isn’t a reasonable excuse?”
Richard was a charming man, without doubt. He wasn’t a bad man or so it seemed to her but she had been deceived by men who swore to only want the best for her that it was hardly possible for Zetta to fully trust any of them. And a man could have never won her heart.
As she flashed him just one of her enigmatic smile, he spoke again:
“Fine, you got me: I just wanted to see you and to remind you that our producers are expecting us at Rao’s for dinner in an hour. We should leave soon” he gave an apologetic smile and lowered his voice to a whisper. “Will we be there in time?”
“We will, I promise you” Zetta confirmed then made a show of shooing him away. “Now shoo, call Sabine and let me get dressed or else we will be late”
Richard raised his arms in surrender, laughing. Then he pressed a kiss on the crown of her head.
“I’ll get off of your hair, doll”
Zetta resumed her makeup as Richard moved towards the door. He was halfway out when
“Oh I almost forgot! I spoke to Alan yesterday and he loved the movie: the story of the two sisters reunited in the midst of chaos on the sinking ship is just perfect, so heart-warming-“
“Yes, it truly is heart-warming” Zetta commented, losing focus again.
“The story is real, right? You met at least one of them on board, didn’t you?”
Zetta’s voice lowered as memories started surfacing back.
“Yes, we were…rather close”
“If they survived, we should track them down and invite them at the movie: it would be great if they could talk to the press. Journalists love stories like this: I can see the headlines alrea-“
“We’ll see, Richard. Now please go call Sabine”
She tried to keep her voice from betraying her feelings, but she could feel a rush of anger surging. She would have never handed the Carrem sisters and such a private and tragic moment of their lives to those shameless sharks who go under the name of journalists. The subtle hint of heartbreak and they prey the unfortunate victims like vultures over a corpse: they wouldn’t stop until they had dissected those aching hearts, leaving them to bleed out. No, she would have done everything in her power to prevent this.
The story she wrote down when asked to bring the grim fate of the Titanic on the big screen was fiction: inspired by true facts but fiction. Zetta was smart enough to know that life and fiction are two separate things and that an edulcorated tale of those most tragic hours was all the world could take: the people of New York, who weren’t there that night, would have been overwhelmed by the real story.
Still, when she sat at her desk and started writing a draft of the script her mind immediately turned to…Adele.
She didn’t even notice Richard leaving the room as the silhouette of Miss Carrem clouded her thoughts. Finally alone, her face fell and she shut her eyes as if to prevent the memory from fading away.
Adele, most gracious, fearless Adele…
Her lips curled into a sad smile as she reminisced their first meeting. She was sitting in her suite smoking and listening to James making some pointless speech when the door opened and Teo stepped in followed by Adele. She had the beauty of a Greek goddess and the look of someone who was going through a lot. She clearly felt out of place among finely dressed first-class passengers in the lavish room but she kept her head high. Zetta remembered feeling the urge to know what troubled her but she put on her mask, the sardonic film star ever out of reach. And then…was it a brave move or just an insane one? Adele told her of her arrest, of prison. Everyone else would have hidden from her, a new employer and Zetta Serda…not Adele. She handed her everything she needed to destroy her life as if it was no big deal. Zetta was taken aback and searched her green eyes for any sign of mockery but find none: the stranger girl truly trusted her with her life. That’s when she realized how unique Miss Carrem was.
Adele found a way to her heart effortlessly as if she had the map from the very start. When she placed her hand over hers in the projection room, she startled Zetta: whenever she had made the fatal mistake to show her vulnerable side to anyone, they would have used it against her to make her feel weak or small…clearly in need of someone who would tell her what to do, to guide her. They would have refilled her glass with wine again and again instead of going for the simplest gesture: taking her hand into theirs and comfort her. Making her believe with that touch that everything would have been fine, and she was stronger than whatever life threw her.
For a moment, as Adele held her hand, she felt safe, pacified, something she had never experienced with any of her supposed lovers. She couldn’t even be mad at her secretary when she revealed her James’ plan and the true reason behind his bailing her out of jail. She was shocked, obviously but she also couldn’t believe that Adele, brave foolish Adele, had put her life into her hands again. “I’m perfectly aware of the risk I’m taking by revealing this to you but you deserve to know. I cannot keep this from you” she said, looking her right in the eye.
Those eyes…they took Zetta’s breath away whenever they ignited with the fire sparking inside her. She could have lost herself in their green depths when they gleamed with pride and mischief as she proposed a toast to the vote to women or whenever their eyes met. She got lost in them when their lips touched, and they grew dark with desire. How daring and foolish they had been in the Turkish baths…but she couldn’t bring herself to regret that moment of ecstasy when she felt free and truly loved, for once. She could still shiver remembering Adele’s touch, the way her lips traced down her body with reverence and adoration, the soft moans the tender girl in her arms suffocated hiding her face in the crook of her neck as she melted under her caresses. In those stolen embraces she knew happiness.
How happy she felt whenever Adele was around: just exchanging a brief look across the room would make her heart flutter.
Then other memories surged and Zetta felt tears welling her closed eyes. Her birthday night, that cursed birthday night…Adele and her sneaking away from the party to find a private spot on the deck. The wine, the cold breeze of the ocean, Adele’s silvery laughter at her tipsy enthusiasm, how she craved those sweet lips all night.
“If I’m honest, I don’t even want to reach shore, I don’t want to go back to the party…I just want to stay out here with you. Forever.”
Adele’s tender smile in agreement.
“Let’s just make a tent of this blanket – we can live off seal meat and rainwater”
Her tipsy proposal made the two of them laugh again.
“What about your acting career?” Adele inquired, a smile lingering on her face.
“We’ll make our own plays. Whaddya say?”
God, how those words sounded different now…how she would have given everything to have Adele there to cup her face and give her a slow, deep kiss. But Adele wasn’t by her side anymore…she lost sight of her when her agent and Richard dragged her and James away from the crowd at the New York pier.
She hadn’t written her ever since that day and she felt so impossibly guilty because of that: Adele must have thought she had forgotten about her after all her words of love on the ship. Maybe she felt used, maybe she hated her by now and cursed the memory of her. She would have reasons to hold a grudge to her…the truth was that happiness and love are hard to accept if you have never truly had them before and if they came from a woman loving another woman.
Zetta had tried to write her a thousand time but every time she had made an effort to put her feelings into words, her lines rang hollow. Yet the words that got stuck in her throat when Adele pulled her into a corner and confessed that no matter what happened that night she needed to tell that she loved her were clear in her mind.
The months spent parted from you are the saddest time of my life. I’m haunted by you, the ghost of you. You’re everywhere: even if I’m silent, not an hour passed where I haven’t thought of you. I tried not to, but whenever I closed my eyes, there you were. I love you and I can’t live without you, without your smile, your wit, your touch. I just can’t but how can I ask you to be with me in the dark? I can’t step back from this wedding and I don’t want you to be a secret mistress: that would squalid and offensive when you are the one I want to give all of me. To marry, if that was even a possibility for us so that I could spend every single day of my life with you, waking up with you by my side, taking care of you…making you happy. Your absence makes even breathing hard, not to mention smiling to strangers, “capitalist pigs” as you would say…I even try and talk like you do, you see? But I find myself wondering: will I make you happy if I have to hide our love from the world? Kiss you only behind closed doors? Let you see me marry a man? You’re a free spirit, my love, I don’t want to put you in a cage because our love, our pure love would be a scandal and a scandal would ruin everything I worked for since I was even younger than you. I don’t want you to spend your life as a ghost yet I find myself craving to see your face one more time as living without you is barely surviving but all the light has gone as I lost you.
Suddenly she felt someone placing their hands on her shoulders.
“Let me help you here, Madame”
She opened her eyes and saw Sabine, smiling sympathetically down at her. She tried and failed to mirror her smile as her mascara was now running down her cheeks.
Sabine helped her to her feet and took care of everything. Zetta let her washed up her face and helped her into her shiny evening dress: she felt like a child in the hands of a loving mother. When she was putting on her earrings, the final touch, Sabine handed her a small stack of envelopes.
“The invitations to the movie screening and party” she explained. “It’s October first, I would suggest to send them first thing tomorrow to ensure that everyone get the invitation within reasonable notice. It wasn’t easy to find all the addresses, but I did my best”
“I’m sure you did, Sabine. Thank you for taking care of it.” Zetta said as she checked the succession of familiar names of former passengers and famous colleagues. “I will sign them personally when we come back from the party”.
“Excellent” Sabine nodded.
Then as Zetta placed the stack on her desk, she presented her a single envelope.
“I hope you don’t mind if I requested a faster delivery for this one” she added before bowing her head curtly and leaving the room. “Have a nice evening, Madame”
Zetta read the name handwritten on the last envelope where a different stamp had been appointed.
‘Mademoiselle Adele Carrem’
A lump formed in her throat but she forced herself not to cry and just smile, mentally thanking Sabine: she had found her. Following nothing else but her instinct, Zetta picked out the invitation and signed it with her fountain pen. Then, as Richard called her name, she grabbed a slip of paper and wrote a brief note:
“Please come, my love. I must see you again. Yours, Zetta”.
She folded everything back into the envelope and finally left her room as a newfound hope kindled inside her.
Film Forum Asks, What Is the Experience of Black Women in Film
Film Forum’s latest series, “Black Women: Trailblazing African American Performers & Images, 1920-2001,” opening Friday, is an event. Not just something to mark on your calendar, but an event to line up for. Among the women featured here are Josephine Baker, Evelyn Preer, Pam Grier, Diahann Carroll and Janet Jackson.
It’s rare to see a film series of this size devoted to black actresses, many of whom — like Theresa Harris and Francine Everett — were underappreciated in their lifetimes, relegated to uncredited roles as maids and servants. (Though, interestingly, the Museum of Modern Art is about to host an eclectic series of its own, “It’s All in Me: Black Heroines,” from Feb. 20-March 5.)
With over 60 films and special events, including tributes to Ella Fitzgerald and the archivist Pearl Bowser, the Film Forum series has many themes. Maybe too many. But what is clear is that each work helps tell the history of black women in film and how they operated — both subversively and overtly — to tell their stories, even when scripts failed to flesh out their characters. To put the series in perspective, I spoke recently with the film historian Donald Bogle, author of books like “Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies, and Bucks: An Interpretive History of Blacks in American Films,” who programmed this wide-ranging series with Ina Archer, an experimental filmmaker and media preservationist.
While things are changing, black actresses and other actresses of color still struggle in a white, male-dominated industry (just look at this year’s Oscar nominees), fighting for some control over their roles. “We do have more women working now, more women in general, but these problems continue,” Bogle said in a recent phone interview. “Of all the stereotypes, the mammy figure is the one that America cherishes the most.”
Here are edited excerpts from the conversation.
This is quite an extensive series: four weeks of films, covering 81 years.
Originally it was to be cut off at 2000. Then I said, “Well, no, Halle Berry’s Oscar comes from the 2001 film ‘Monster’s Ball.’” So it covers a lot of history.
Where did you begin? What did you just know you had to include?
Dorothy Dandridge in “Carmen Jones,” from 1954. Dandridge was the first African-American, male or female, to be Oscar-nominated in the leading role category. I felt that was significant. And her performance in it, she’s this very dynamic, assertive, independent woman who of course is punished for her independence and her assertiveness.
And then “Cabin in the Sky,” with Ethel Waters and Lena Horne. They’re of two different generations. Ethel Waters was one of my favorite actresses, but she was very, very difficult. She’s terrific in the film. There is the sort of nightclub sequence when she reclaims her sexuality to win back her husband. The thing about Ethel Waters in the film is that she’s — as in life at that point — an older black woman, she’s heavier, she was browner than Lena Horne. Yet she has this sexuality, which is very important.
I have to say with “Cabin in the Sky” and “Stormy Weather,” those films are just rich cultural documents with great African-American performers, female and male, whose work might have been forgotten, or unacknowledged were it not for film. John Bubbles, for example, who plays Domino Johnson in “Cabin in the Sky,” he dances — and I mean what a dancer. He was the man that Fred Astaire apparently looked up to.
There are so many examples of that.
Nina Mae McKinney, who’s in the 1929 “Hallelujah,” she was really Hollywood’s first black love goddess. King Vidor [the film’s director] had seen the play “Blackbirds of 1928.” Nina Mae was in it. And King Vidor remembered her position in the chorus line [during an interview years later]. He said “third girl from the right.” After all those years, he just remembered how her talents jumped out at him off that stage. But McKinney does “Hallelujah,” and it is a performance that the executives at MGM all felt she had what it took to become a star. And it wasn’t going to happen.
Any more recent performances that stick with you?
Angela Bassett as Tina Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do With It.” Even Whitney Houston in “The Bodyguard.” I think she’s just right as this pop star being threatened, and she has a kind of — you don’t doubt who she is in that. Because she’s able to bring her offscreen persona to the character.
That’s the other thing with some of these films — when we come to them and we know what happened to some of the women or what didn’t happen to them in terms of their careers. It becomes another kind of experience. It’s rather bittersweet when you’re just thinking of all the possibilities that were there in terms of talent, but not there in terms of what the industry was going to do.
Can you expand on that, and some of the themes you wanted to convey to viewers?
It is a kind of journey. In many cases, it’s not just playing a role, but playing against it — to send out covert messages about the way they saw things. In creating a character the actress also had to create a back story of her own — for the character that she’s playing.
One of the things I’m hoping people will go away with are these crucial moments where something else is happening onscreen that the director or the writer may not have been aware of when they were shooting. In the original 1934 “Imitation of Life,” with Louise Beavers and Fredi Washington, we have these two stereotypes — or archetypes. You have the mammy figure, this black woman who has a pancake recipe. And her white friend, who she gives it to, makes a fortune. The black woman’s daughter, played by Fredi Washington, a fair-skinned black actress, rejects her mother in order to pass as white.
I interviewed Fredi Washington many years later. What she felt about the character was not there in the script. The director, John Stahl, said he wasn’t going to make changes. But if that’s the way she felt about her character to play it that way. And that’s what she tried to do. And you get these moments with Beavers, the submissive black mother, and Washington, a tragic mulatto character who seems to be cursed by her drop of black blood. But you get moments with them of true intimacy and true connection, even though they’re at odds with one another. Each understands intuitively the other’s position, which the script is not stating.
It’s nice to see a number of black female directors like Julie Dash and Maya Angelou here. How do their works shift the narrative for black actresses?
And also Kasi Lemmons, who directed “Eve’s Bayou,” and “The Watermelon Woman” director, Cheryl Dunye, and Leslie Harris’s “Just Another Girl on the IRT,” a bit earlier. This is another perspective, with women behind the camera, telling the story. That’s the thing you always have to ask yourself when you’re watching a movie: Who is telling these stories, what are they telling me and what are they not? And in so many films, black women have had to fill in the hole in the script of what is not really being said. But with women directors you’re getting something else, a more complicated vision of dilemmas and situations confronting black women. Here I think that you see films that only women would have made — and their feelings for their characters and the kinds of decisions that their characters have to make.
Of the films here, which ones do you think might surprise viewers the most?
The surprises within the series might be things that were made for a mainstream audience but we see something else happening in them. I’m thinking of “Set It Off.” It does not have a female director but it has Queen Latifah. She goes all the way with that character, and what it is saying about her sexuality and how she feels. [She plays a lesbian in this 1996 heist movie.] She’s a marvel. I think there’s a generation now that will be surprised when they see it.
It’s Oscar season again, and, surprise, there’s not much diversity among the nominees. Actresses like Halle Berry and Hattie McDaniel have been criticized for the roles they won Oscars for, yet you included those films in the series.
With Halle Berry, “Monster’s Ball,” it wins her the Oscar. I think she’s very good in it but it still presents a certain problem that’s been in the movies and I don’t think we’re really free of today. It’s really a white man’s redemption movie. She is bringing about, in a sense, his attempt to rehabilitate. She is alone in that film, there was no real black community — because she’s lost her husband, has lost her son. But with all of the dilemmas that she has in that film, the question we always ask is, “Well, doesn’t she have friends or family that she might be able to reach out to”? She’s just isolated.
I think that she was deserving of the Oscar. But this is pointing out to us as black viewers our conflicting feelings when we see some of these films. And this goes way back where you’re excited to see a performer onscreen able to do something but you may also be completely distressed by certain aspects of these films and what they’re lacking.
The thing about Hattie McDaniel, I think that she really has some agency in her role [in “Gone With the Wind”]. You hear that voice, and it is a sonic boom. And you know that she was born not to take orders but to give them.
And her whole thing with Vivien Leigh — and other white co-stars — is that she’s not afraid of them. She doesn’t back off. When we see “Gone With the Wind,” again, we would like to know where does Mammy actually reside? Does she go to the slave quarters? Is there a room in this big house? What is her relationship with Prissy, played by Butterfly McQueen, or with Pork [another servant, played by Oscar Polk]? “Gone With the Wind” won’t tell us that. But she has something else within herself — that we know there has to be something else there. [Good] actresses will create a back story for their character.
controversial opinion you should give us your bi aelin headcanons
sorry this took so long to answer I’ve been on a hunt for receipts x
aelin ashryver is bisexual: a summary
-I’m indebted forever to @blackbeaktrash for pointing this out to me but uhhh remember that post about how Mulan Korra and the short one from the time traveling lesbian game all had one thing in common- the bisexual hair cut ? hello aelins fresh chop in HoF
- the assassin and the desert. every single line. is a wlw tragedy romance ripped straight from a mythology.
- let’s get some direct quotes from the gay awakening that was the assassin and the desert:
~
“Celaena tried not to look too interested, though the girl was one of the most stunning people she’d ever beheld.”
~
“And somehow, the thought of returning to Rifthold without Ansel was a tad unbearable.”
~
“Celaena couldn’t stop her lips from trembling as she asked, “Was it ever real?”
“Ansel opened one eye, staring at the far wall. “There were some moments when it was. The moment I sent you away, it was real.”
~
“ And I think she sent you away because she truly cared for you.
She hated her mouth for wobbling. “That doesn’t make it hurt any less.”
-like Sam is nice rip but I refuse to believe he was aelins first love interest when ansel exists
- i understand where people are coming from when they talk about malide being canon if manon was a man but….i present example a- ansel and celaena the original gay love story to never happen and yet be laced with romantic chemistry
-anyway read the gayssassin and the desert
-aelin describing every woman she meets as beautiful and ethereal and then men are like…’he was tall. he had sword’
- yrene in tab: ‘wow I’d love to travel and be a healer so I could help people’
-aelin, emptying her pockets: you’re so pretty I love you here’s a sack full of cash is that enough? You’re so talented ily
-she loves swords & swords belong to the gays
-aelin calling cha0l ugly the first time she meets him…compared with yrene, a straight woman who’s immediately attracted to him…..Noah fence but….that was her gaydar trying to warn her :/
-aelins the only one who calls out these dumb ass white frat boys on their privilege and their upper class straight man bullshit!!shes having none of it !!!
-doriman in tog: “hey aelin? would you ever consider putting your life at risk and jeopardizing your safety to be with me?”
-aelin, right before she goes to have breakfast in bed with her beloved idol nehemia:
-while we’re on the subject, aelin taking literal WEEKS to notice if a mans attractive or not but describing every woman she meets as good looking within SECONDS even if she hates them
-Like LOOK
-I mean I cannot relate to the straight experience but I cannot imagine this is how a straight woman talks about women
-SHE DOESNT EVEN LIKE LYSANDRA AND SHES ALL IN THERE TALKING ABOUT HER ‘SENSOUS MOUTH’ IN QOS i mean
-aelin: the woman was built like a mythical goddess…she radiated beauty and sensuality from every pore
-aelin : this is rowan he’s my husband and he’s built like a TANK
-It took aelin six months to realize he was hot compared to literally everybody else who wanted to jump him mere seconds after meeting him(with the exception of manon, a proud lesbian but anyway)
-girl cannot sit in a fucking chair properly!! always throwing herself sideways or dangling off of it or slouching in it or something
-spitting jewels out of her mouth? Performing foreplay in a room full of powerful men and borian? gay
-i don’t know about you gals but I always get a ring engraved to give to my personal (straight)friends when I ask them to spend the rest of their life with me…
-when Rowan’s like ‘aw man can’t wait to get back and go to bed with my wife’ and the next line is like ‘aelin and lysandra were lying together, asleep’
-aelin saw the absolute straight man manic pixie nonsense quail and dorito were throwing at her and was like ‘bummer uhhh fuck both of you?’ instead of wasting her life and energy on men who didn’t appreciate her that’s all bi energy babes!
-aelin and manon having a metaphorical dick measuring contest but with swords
-aelin polishing nesryns dagger and dreaming of buying her a new one
-aelin telling kale that nesryn can speak for herself !!! Shut up!!!
- nesryn: mind your own business brullo lmao #nosy as fuck
-aelin, who had a dagger at this woman’s back not even 12 hours earlier:
-Aedion: haha…so aelin only invited nesryn out to have drinks with us because she needed an extra pair of hands because I was injured….what a smart strategic move
-aelin: nesryn you look lonely do you want to come with us ? Tell me about yourself. What’s your family like? How do you get your hair so smooth? Do you want my social security number?
-aelin loved nehemia so much she dumped stale whitebread and got written off as a terrible character by the Discourse Police: Cha0l Division. that’s love.
-attempting to murder the man ur fuckin after he’s involved in the murder of your beloved gay friend? hm. not a straight aura but #prove #me #wrong
-aelin keeps all her nails long except her sword hands so she can keep the aesthetic and weapon functionality but also keep a gay functionality
- in tower of dawn whomst does aelin write to? out of every one of the royal family ? lesbian icon and love of my life Hasar. aelin sensed incredible chaotic gay wlw energy from ACROSS the sea and knew immediately where the real power was. gaydar in action
- aelin has impeccable taste in fashion and upholstery, unrivaled by any other person in tog
-listen I live with 2 straight people and I promise you. The only one who cares enough about proper home decor, mood lighting and pretty things that were very expensive- is the gay one: me
-all the men hate her all the women love her lmao that says it all
- chaotic disaster gay aelin ashryver. Hurricane wlw nightmare woman tearing through these streets
-made a post about it here already but aelins like ‘fuck I can’t like manon but her fucking sword is so cool jesus christ’ that’s gay
- when aelin finds out manon graciously allowed snorian to have sex with her: I do NOT approve but go ahead ruin ya life lol
-when aelin finds out manon left elide alone in oakweld: what the FUCK did you do to that precious beautiful angel were it not for the laws of this land-
-MANON ‘LESBIAN’ BLACKBEAK herself says aelin radiates a gay aura she’s disappointed when she meets her in eos because all the batshit chaotic neutral gay has been depleted from her due to over exposure to straight men
-manons entire arc re: aelin in eos was ‘i should rip her throat out but i get where this stupid gay is coming from so’
-aelin giving a woman she’s just met the necklace her abuser gave her on her 16th? power move. gay power move.
- i love her so much but she’s. so goddamn stupid. and that’s such a mood
- Getting My Whole Ass Out To Prove Were Platonic Friends …that’s a level of denial I can’t even cover
-don’t know if I said it earlier but when aelin asks Lys to join her and lys says oh are you proposing, aelin..doesn’t say no lmao she’s just like ‘tragically I find myself with a life partner’
-lysandra sleeping on aelins lap while aelin downs 2 bottles of wine and flirts with ansel, while all the men look on annoyed that aelin did all of their jobs for them- gay imagery
- listen if ansel ‘murdered my boyfriend of 5yrs saving the girl I knew for a month’ briarcliff approves of you then…you’re gay. you just are.
-aelin ’ill murder you if so much as make EYE CONTACT with any of my women’ ashryver
- I said it already but. There is no better way to indicate that you are living life as our lady sappho intended than having a plethora of boring straight men hate you.
-That’s one of the things you need to have before they let you be gay
-aelins the only character who’s like- you know what I’m missing from my life? Women. I should go out and meet more of those
-killing the man who murdered your beloved friend in the exact same way he tortured her killing the man who set it up and basking in his blood am I right ladies
-aelin acknowledging she’s pretty because she works at it ? Maybe the only ya fantasy character who cannonically exfoliates, moisturizes, and uses toner and serum??? And you except me to sit here and assume she’s straight ???? In this economy ?????
-and yeah I’m absolutely 100% projecting because i love her. maybe blonde emotional chaotic bisexual fashion icons should look after each other now and then.
what do I know i clearly missed the gay memo where we all hate her now or something lmaooo anyway
#answered#if kingdom of ash doesnt put hasar aelin and manon in a room and have them lovingly beat the shit out of each other#then we're throwing the whole throne of glass away#rowaelin and anselaena are both good btw but celaena absoutely should have got with ansel
Flower's Search for New Partners
Hey, I'm a 30 year old writer in search of new partners.
About Me
Posting Schedule: I do my best to respond to my stories once every two to three weeks. There are times when I respond more frequently on weekdays but other times when I post primarily on weekends. It all depends on how busy life becomes. Fair warning, sometimes my writing partners may have to wait longer than a three week period. Being made to feel guilty about not posting is a massive turn-off for me. Spare us both the headache and please search for another partner if you are the type to become anxious while waiting for posts.
On Smut: Smut tends to take me longer since I am very critical of my writing in those types of scenes. Intimate scenes take me twice as long to write for male characters in comparison with females. Again, just being upfront and honest with you. I enjoy smut as an added condiment rather than main dish.
OOC Communication: We do not need to become best friends but I need to feel comfortable with my partners. I need to feel like we can have our characters have a dispute or dislike one another without it leading to misunderstandings between us as writers.
Types of Writing Partners Desired: Anyone is welcomed here. I want your brain. Your real life gender is irrelevant to me. I prefer partners who write in past tense and third person. First person is perfectly fine in character thoughts. I want to craft a story with another person. Give me your ideas and I will give you mine. We can beat it together into something we both are eager to write. Must be 18+ in regards to your actual age.
Characters I Play: I am perfectly capable of writing either a male or female character. Usually, my female characters tend to be either bi-sexual or heterosexual. Other labels (bi-curious, lesbian, pansexual, etc.) will sometimes make appearances as well. My male characters are more times than not heterosexual but they are capable of being bi-sexual.
Post Length: I can post a lot or I can post a little. It depends on where we are in the story. While I do value quality over quantity, I despise one-liners.
Malleable Ideas: I thoroughly enjoy collaboration. Typically, none of my ideas are set in stone because I prefer to build a story with my partner rather than dictate all of the terms.
Stories I like:
Diversity: The world is filled with a lot of similarities but there are differences too. I enjoy writing people of color (PoC) within my stories. I look through through those face claims first when searching for character inspiration. I don't mind writing other races either! In fact, I am happy too. However, if you would have an issue with me using a PoC, either as an NPC or main character, I would rather not write with you
Drama: I really, really love drama in my roleplays. A lot of my characters have tragic pasts. My partner would need roll with the punches and maybe even return them because it's boring for me to play submissive characters with no backbone. It's also boring for me to write the perfect couple. I need hellfire dammit! Now, this does not need to happen all of the time. As with all things, too much of something lessens its appeal
Humor: Make me laugh. It is one of the greatest gifts you can give a person and I will like you ten times more for it.
Low (Modern) Fantasy: A good example of this genre, for me, would be the television show, Supernatural. I write these types of stories most because they are so much fun!
Superheroes: I like playing superheroes! I haven't done it in a while but my interest has not waned. I should warn that I don't like playing canons like Storm, Thor, or any of those awesome creations. I don't feel like I can do them justice so I rather just make my original character.
Mythology: Admittedly, I have a bit of a weakness for mythology. While I am most familiar with Greek myths, I am more than happy to explore others. Stories that entice me are mortals falling in love with gods. Recreating a romance between gods such as Hades or Persephone. Or defining the reason why a god might be perceived as something such as why Zeus is seen as a cheater or what not.
Lycanthropy: There’s a special place in my heart for werewolves. Not only do I enjoy reading and watching movies about them but I really love writing them.
Vampires: Same as above. I’ve been reading about vampires forever and I do enjoy a good movie, like the Underworld series. I’m pretty flexible on the lore we borrow from to craft our own versions.
Angels: Love them! They can be sent from heaven on a mission, stolen by some bold demon, or banished for a misdeed.
Demons: Love them!
Westerns: Westerns are a tricky category. As such, it really depends if I’d enjoy writing them or not. I like the idea of rural setting in modern times. I’m not sure if that’s what someone might consider a western. I also really love Westworld. The grittiness of the characters and such. It really just depends with this one.
System Roleplays: I’ve been wanting to try a system game for the longest. It just hasn’t happened yet. If you are looking to write one with me, whether if in a 1v1 or group game, you will need to be patient. I have no experience with it other than a few brief games and watching Critical Role every week.
Historical Settings: Again, like with Westerns, it really depends with this category. Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely adore period pieces. I’m constantly searching for one to watch on Netflix. They’re just so hard and my confidence in writing them is pretty shaky.
Apocalyptic Settings: I don't mind these types of games. I will usually take a peek at group games with this setting but I have never ventured to do a story in a one on one setting. Doesn't mean I am not opened to it though.
Fandoms I Like (Original Characters and sometimes Canon Characters):
Westworld, Sense8, Charmed, Blade Runner 2049, Altered Carbon, The Magicians, Potterverse, Merlin, Penny Dreadful, Critical Role, Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, Downton Abbey, The Dragon Prince, My Hero Academia, Mirai Nikki, Akama Ga Kill, Sword Art Online, Elfen Lied and loads more!
Here are some examples of story ideas I've come up with in the past. These are all modern mythology retellings.
Eye of The Storm
Story : Your character has always been troubled, the type who skipped school on the daily basis and stole lipstick from stores, even though there was not a need. People, who have the misfortune of knowing her, view her as being another ungrateful brat, destined to end up in some expensive rehab center or overdosed in a darken corner of the club. They were correct. She turned out to be a blemish upon the face of the world and her parents’ constant shame. No one understands it as there is no visible explanation for it. Either way, somehow, she ends up at the chaotic shores in the middle of the storm, garbed in her vomit stained clothes and deadly intent. She walks out into the water, seeking to end her life, and finds herself rescued by the most unlikely of sources. Setting : A college town a few hours out from the city. The only qualifier I have in regards to setting is that it must take place near the seas. Keywords : Romance, Substance Abuse, Suicide, Modern Fantasy, Mythology(Poseidon) Seeking : Your character, of course, is our troubled young woman, who desperately needs to be guided away from what has been destroying her from within for years. I have a loose idea that something escaped the mysterious and dangerous depths of the ocean and has taken up residence within her body for years, potentially poisoning her beyond redemption. Maybe she discovered a necklace as a kid or something? We can discuss this together. Kinks : Due to lack of a better word or descriptor, this might be considered a Dominant/submissive type of roleplay with Poseidon (Ishmael) assuming the dominant role. The God has possessed a lifelong obsession with water so there would obviously be a few scenes within that type of environment. Water is open to change though so he would be willing to permit whomever he’s with to lead every once in a while.
Waste Not, Want Not
Story : Apollo has often been regarded as being a fairly lighthearted god, one who brings constant sunshine and inspires brilliance into whomever surrounds him, much like the sun which is essential for the creation of life. However, with the disappearance of his wild but truly believed twin sister, his gentle countenance has become resigned and withdrawn from the world. Unfortunately, his grief is not one to be experienced alone. Without the presence of its sun prince, the world becomes dark in consequence, not just in temperature but also in creativity .Where people experimented to create a new, they have become content with their ignorance and current circumstances. Apollo finds inspiration though in the most unlikely of places; however, what price is he willing to play to regain his muse? Setting : This can take place in a modern (rural or urban) or historical setting. Keywords : Romance, Modern or Historical, Mythology (Apollo), Betrayal, Punishment, Teasing, Exploration Seeking : This is a fairly loose idea. I am basically seeking someone who is capable to break a God’s muse block.
To Kiss A Spy
Story : Marriage is not to be broken. Zeus has sworn himself anew to his wife, Hera, determined to take his vows seriously and be loyal to her until the end of their days. Faithfully, he ignores the temptations of the flesh, no matter how succulent, from both human and goddess alike. His temper suffers as a result but those around him have learned to adjust to their new leader’s temperament. In other words, he is given a wide berth. All that matters is that his Hera is content, basking in being the sole owner of his affections. At least, he believes she is. In truth, the Queen of the Gods does not believe her husband is capable of the barest hint of monogamy. She is certain that he is still cheating on her even though her evidence suggests he speaks truthfully about his change of heart. Determined to prove herself right, she acquires some temptation, one which her husband would not be able to resist. Setting : This can take place in a modern (rural or urban) or historical setting. Keywords : Romance, Historical or Modern, Mythology (Zeus), Betrayal, Punishment, Teasing, Cheating Seeking : Whomever Hera has bribed, hired, or threatened to do this piece of dirty work for her.
Finally caught up on the gay space gem show and it’s safe to say my mood and feelings…..varied, from episode to episode.
Familiar:
Ahaha I’m sorry so sorry but gah I just didn’t feel this episode at fucking all
I fully cop to my mood possibly being soured by a long hiatus and then I’m given…..Homeworld, and it’s fine I guess but my god this isn’t what I care about most
But it’s what I was given, so
Like, I feel that I was supposed to…something, over the pebbles and the talking walls and statues; I guess I’m supposed to be ‘ooohhh Homeworld is so terrible’ except I ALREADY KNEW THAT
Can you tell how much I was not feeling this episode
Massive, tragic missed opportunity for our Pearl and Yellow Pearl to have a snark-off
All I could think about that one iconic ‘fucking banana-bread bitch’ tumblr post. THAT. I WANTED THAT.
And okay, my mood lifts a little with Steven interacting with both Yellow and Blue Diamond and I’m thinking ‘maybe I kind of like Steven hanging out with his other lesbians mums’
Also I really do love Blue Diamond’s voice. When she’s not being a giant terrifying goddess, it’s soothing
But then Steven’s all “I KNOW YOU GUYS HAVE COLONY STUFF TO DO, SO” and yeah that really fucking grated. Little too flippant on that whole ‘the Diamonds are actually terrible’ thing, Steven
I fast-forwarded through Steven’s song , that’s how much I didn’t care
And then the episode that I absolutely most definitely obtained through super legal methods froze with two minutes to go and my mood was so cranky that I didn’t care enough to find a better copy
Did not like. And I don’t like not loving Steven Universe, especially after a giant hiatus. Not a fun place to be in.
….and then I watched Together Alone and all was right with the world again:
CONFIRMATION WHITE PEARL WAS PINK PEARL, like we all called forever ago. Pink Pearl, what did they do to you.
BLUE PEARL LIKES TO DRAW. GRAPHIC DESIGN IS HER PASSION. LET HER ART.
Yellow Pearl’s inner desire is of course to be drawn like one of Blue Pearl’s French girls
Really, what we’re learning on this journey tonight is that I care vastly more about the Pearls than I do the Diamonds
Speaking of, Blue Diamond shows up and she is awful and terrible, because she is awful and terrible
Mmmm something something Garnet agreeing to conform through gritted teeth something OUCH something
Blue Diamond’s dismissive ‘is that what it calls itself’ is again, terrible, and god the show is much better when it lets her and Yellow be actually awful – entertaining, but awful LIKE THEY ARE
God I miss Lapis and Peridot
AQUAMARINES
IS ONE OF THEM OUR AQUAMARINE
I MISSED MY FAVOURITE EVIL MADELINE
Where are my Topaz girls
And then I’m dying because look, I know White Diamond’s a monster and all, but also I CAN RELATE to her ‘….yeah nah mate got better shit to do White out’
EVERYONE IS FUSING AND IT DOES NOT GO WELL. Full love to Pearl/Amethyst/Ruby/Sapphire/Garnet/Opal’s collective ‘fuck you’ and fusing to protect Stevonnie
INCLUDE SOME RANDO and I don’t know who she is but I would die for
Tumblr tells me she’s Jade. Thanks, tumblr
Yeah, I got real fucking nervous for a second with Yellow poofing everyone because I think no one wants to know if they try that trick on Stevonnie. Thankfully Stevonnie is not poofed, we don’t get an answer to that terrible question
When will Lapis and Peridot return from the war
