And Lover, Be Good to Me - Joel Miller Imagine [HBO's The Last of Us]

Title: And Lover, Be Good to Me
Pairing: Joel Miller X Reader
Based On: Be
Word Count: 2,404 words
Warning(s): nightmares, mention of death/violence
Summary: The world suddenly crumbles down. When met with anger, fear, and tragedy, the only constant that Joel has left is (Y/n). And he's desperate to avoid losing that too.
Author's Note: I haven't seen a lot of (or any, really) early apocalypse stories about Joel, so I wanted to shoot my shot with it.
WASTELAND, BABY! - HOZIER WRITING CHALLENGE MASTERLIST
---------------------
The beginning of the end could be traced back to the morning of Joel's birthday.
I had gone to see him and Sarah before I went to work.
I knocked on the door but walked in without waiting for an answer from anyone. I had grown so close to them that I didn't need to worry about it.
"Where's the elderly one?" I yelled as I walked into the dining room.
"Sitting right here with perfectly fine hearing," Joel said, flinching a bit at my voice.
"Happy birthday, dork," I ruffled his hair. I waved at Sarah, who was sitting at the table next to him. "Morning, sweetheart."
"Morning," she smiled. "Want some eggs?"
"With added shells," Joel added.
"I actually can't today, big meeting," I explained. "I just wanted to stop by and drop this off."
I placed a birthday bag in front of Joel on the table. He stared at it for a moment.
I chuckled at him before leaning down and hugging him. "I'm serious. Happy birthday."
"Thanks," he muttered back.
I leaned back and waved to Sarah. "Make sure this one has a good day, got it?"
"Understood," she nodded.
I started walking out of the house, but only made it a few feet before Sarah came running out and stopped me. I furrowed my eyebrows, confused about the urgency that seemed to form in the last few seconds.
"I need your help with something," she explained. "My dad has this watch that I was going to get fixed for him, but the guy at the shop-"
"You need cash?"
She sheepishly nodded.
I reached into my wallet and pulled out a bit of cash. "You can keep the change as long as you aren't using it to buy anything illegal."
She sighed dramatically. "I guess that's fine."
I faked a laugh before hugging her. "Have a good day."
"You too."
If I knew that was the last time that I was going to see Sarah, then I would have held onto her for a little bit longer.
That night, the world came crumbling down. In all manners of the phrase.
It all felt like a bit of a blur.
I remember running from work after my boss tried to attack me. I found crowds of people attacking each other and yelling. I saw fires and heard gunshots. I couldn't get to my car. I just kind of ran for it.
I don't remember how long I spent trying to run and stay safe. I was just scared and doing anything I could to survive.
I was lucky. Especially compared to most other people.
I found myself at a triage clinic with a large bruise on my side and a few small cuts.
I was sitting on a cot while a doctor looked over my injuries.
It was the first time that I had taken the time to truly think about what had happened. I was alone. My family was God knows where. The only people I truly had in town were Joel, Sarah, and Tommy. I didn't know where any of them were. If they were alive.
"Do you guys have a list of people that have been here," I asked, cutting off whatever the doctor had been saying.
"No, sorry," he said. "With the large number and the speed it was all set up, we never had the chance."
"Okay," I nodded.
I mindlessly looked at the crowd.
I wasn't truly looking for anything. I just wanted to have some semblance of hope.
My eyes latched onto one person in particular.
I thought I was hallucinating when I first looked over. However, as I sat there longer, just staring, I realized that I wasn't. This was real. Tommy was walking by right now.
I shrugged off the army doctor looking over me. He tried to scold me, but I ignored him. I pushed myself off of the cot that they had been using like an examination table, still not listening to the instructions to stay still to make sure I don't injure myself further.
"Tommy!" I shouted.
He looked over at me, a confused look stretched across his face. I saw the look change into a smile that showed nothing but relief.
"(Y/n)," he muttered.
I ran over, trying to pay no mind to the bruises on my side. When I finally made it to Tommy, he yanked me forward into a hug, holding me close to him. I closed my eyes as I hugged him back.
"God, I was scared you got infected or shot or just- God," he muttered.
"Could say the same to you," I replied.
Tommy stepped back, looking like he just realized something. "I know someone who's gonna be very happy to see you."
I had a sneaking suspicion of who it was. But it didn't bring me the overwhelming sense of happiness that I wanted it to bring. The idea of Tommy just saying "someone" and not something like "people" made my heart sink a little.
I tried to not pay any mind to the sinking feeling in my stomach as Tommy led me somewhere.
I stopped when I spotted Joel.
He looked exhausted. Angry. The exhaustion was understandable. It was hard not to be. But I don't remember ever seeing him with so much anger on his face before. This wasn't a look that went with being angry in the moment. This was anger that was consistent. Anger with the world, instead of anger with a single subject.
I took note of Sarah's absence. I knew Joel. He was protective before all of this. I knew that he would never let her go anywhere without him now. He would be glued to the girl's side, keeping her from all harm. That's just who he was.
"You alright?" Tommy asked, touching my arm.
I didn't pull my eyes from Joel as I nodded. He dropped his hand and went to guide me further, but I stopped him, touching his arm. "Tommy?"
"Yeah?" he looked back at me.
"Where's Sarah?"
I didn't want to ask Joel when I met him. If it was bad, then I didn't want to be the reason that he thought about it.
Tommy looked down for a moment.
"Joel, Sarah, and I got around that initial blockade that the army had put up," he explained. "We made it into town. A plane crashed and it caused the truck to crash. I got separated from Joel and Sarah for a while, but when I found them, there was a soldier holding a gun up to Joel. I shot him before he could shoot Joel. And then I heard Joel scream. The... The soldier had fired before I got to them. He got Sarah through the torso. She... She died."
I let out a shaky breath as tears filled my eyes. I looked down. "Oh my god."
He stepped forward and hugged me again.
It took me a moment, but I eventually stepped back and let out another sigh.
"You alright?" he muttered.
"I'm good," I nodded. I had gotten my tears under control. I was just grateful that the crowd had blocked Joel from the little scene that had taken place before.
I decided to walk over to Joel after a moment. I steered through the crowd easily enough. Tommy helped.
"Joel," he called once we were a few feet away.
Joel looked up from whatever spot on the ground he had been using to zone out. I saw his eyes go wide as he looked at me.
"I found a stray," Tommy added.
"Fuck you," I mumbled, chuckling a bit.
Joel stood up. "(Y/n)?"
"Hi," I felt a new wave of tears fill my eyes.
He quickly stepped forward and pulled me into a tight hug. I wrapped my arms around him, burying my face in his shoulder and closing my eyes. His hold on me only seemed to tighten as he did that.
Joel's voice was shaky as he muttered into my ear, "I thought you... I thought you were-"
"I'm fine," I cut him off. "I promise."
His shoulders relaxed a bit, but he didn't let me go. Not quite yet.
When I pulled back, my eyes caught onto a wound on his head. I didn't question it at the time, but I couldn't help but notice it. Something in my gut just told me that something was different about it. It wasn't a normal wound from getting hurt. It was just... something different.
"Anyone tell you guys where we're meant to go," I asked. "Not like there's much left."
"Not in the slightest," Joel muttered, glancing around. "They only seem worried about the really bad ones."
"Really? They were treating me like glass and all I got is a bruise on my side."
"From what?" Joel's eyebrows furrowed, immediately worried.
"It's fine, really," I touched his arm. "I fell while dealing with an infected. It was why I was dragged here."
"Nice to know the clumsiness hasn't changed," Tommy smirked.
"Believe it or not, the end of the world isn't the ideal time to work on coordination," I replied. "And hey, did good enough to live."
"I say we grab supplies and get the hell out of here," Joel suggested.
"Head out on our own?" I glanced around the area.
"If an outbreak hits here, I don't wanna be in the crowd."
I nodded. "Can't get supplies now."
"Tonight," he decided. "We get what we need then we hit the road."
Getting out of the triage clinic with needed supplies was easier than I thought it would be. Maybe it was the universe showing just a brief moment of kindness considering how difficult surviving was going to be after this.
It was a few nights later when we found ourselves hidden away in an old, abandoned house. After clearing it out, we made ourselves a small camp in the living room.
"I'll take first watch-"
"I've got it," Joel cut me off.
"No, you've been taking first watch every time we've stopped," I replied. "Get some sleep, Joel. I've got it."
"You sure?"
I nodded.
"Fine by me," Tommy shrugged before going to lie down.
"Night," Joel nodded at me.
I grinned. "Night."
As the brother drifted off for a few hours, I found myself relaxing against the wall. The first night I kept watch; Joel had told me all about all sorts of habits to keep me awake. Not that I really needed them. Fear was enough of a motivator for me.
That night had been calm. Nothing to worry about.
Until I heard muttering.
I furrowed my eyebrows, looking around the room.
It was Joel.
I walked over, glancing down at him. It took a matter of moments for it to become clear that he was having some kind of bad dream. I furrowed my eyebrows and knelt down next to him.
"Joel," I whispered.
I pushed a bit on his shoulder. Nothing happened.
"Joel," I repeated, pushing a little harder on his shoulder.
He started shaking more, which was when I started panicking.
I grabbed onto his arms, shaking him roughly. "Joel, Joel!"
He woke suddenly, staring at me with wide eyes and panicked breathing.
"Hey, hey," I held onto his shoulders. I quietly hushed him, muttering about how he was okay.
He sat up, yanking me forward into his arms.
I let one of my hands run through the hair on the nape of his neck. His face was hidden in my shoulder as his hands flexed a bit against my back as he tightened his arms around me.
"I've got you," I mumbled.
By the time I had said that his breathing had calmed down significantly. He was just resting against me now. As if he was scared to let me go.
"Always did, didn't you?" he replied. "Always trying to save me."
"I never needed to save you," I argued.
He leaned back slowly. "Maybe you never tried, but you did. You were always there somewhere. No matter what happened."
My hands were still on his shoulders. His arms were still around me. I wasn't comforting him anymore, but it felt like if I pulled away from him, then I'd be committing some crime.
"I... I lost too much these last few days," he continued. "I can't lose you too."
"You aren't gonna lose me, Joel-"
"I... I want you to stay with me," he cut me off. "All the time. I don't want to let go of you."
"Okay..."
There was a long pause between us. I could have sworn that I saw the gears turning in Joel's head. I could see him imagining a million different scenarios in a matter of seconds. I could have sworn that I had never seen him so... nervous.
But the more I looked at him, the more I realized that I had seen that face before.
I saw it just a few days ago when I hugged him. I saw it whenever I left after babysitting Sarah. I saw it every time he walked me to the door of my car and I jokingly called him a gentleman. I knew that look so well. I just never knew what it meant.
I got to know the meaning just a few seconds later.
When Joel leaned forward and pressed his lips to mine.
I paused for a moment.
I had imagined this before. I had spent countless nights drifting off with this very image rattling around my brain, haunting me as I tried to find some semblance of peace.
Experiencing now was nothing short of that pure peace that I had been longing for.
My lips slowly moved against his as my hands moved to cup the sides of his face.
Just a little while ago, I was certain that I had nothing pushing me to keep moving and keep living. But now, I was reminded of why I hadn't just laid down and died the first night it all went to hell.
I leaned back slowly, resting my forehead against his.
"Stay," Joel muttered.
"I have no intention of going anywhere," I replied. "I'm going to stay right here."
And I meant it.
No matter how hard I needed to fight, who I needed to get through, or what I had to do.
I was always going to be right there.

Fluffuary 26th~ Again, not really fluffy but *shrugs* I'm still writing so that's a win.
Frank was following him. Matt knew this but it didn’t stop him from ducking into the alley trying to escape from the gang members following him. Frank had sworn not to kill anyone while Matt was near, a hard won concession, but Matt wasn’t sure that he would be lenient while Matt was bleeding out. He couldn’t stay where Frank could follow from rooftops while he was also being hunted by the gang he had just tried to break up.
Overconfident, that was his error. He thought he could take the whole operation on by himself. Knock a few thugs unconscious and let the police wrap up the scene. He hadn’t counted on the responding police being on the gang’s payroll.
Now he was being pursued and was bleeding out from a few well places gunshots that he hadn’t managed to avoid in time.
Matt pulled himself up and onto a dumpster. A fire escape was within reach and if he could just climb up fast enough maybe he wouldn’t be spotted. It was a stretch but he grasped the rungs of the fire escape and pulled himself up. When he reached the landing, he pulled the ladder up behind him. He climbed from there, taking slow, deep breathes until he reached the roof.
He climbed up and over the edge and laid flat on his back as his muscles screamed at him with fatigue. He reached into the pouch at his side and pulled out an old burner cellphone. His hands shook as he felt along the buttons and dialed a number he knew by heart. There was no voice when the call was picked up and Matt simply said “Come find me” instead of a greeting.
He heard Frank swear through the phone but didn’t hang up. He held the phone in one hand as he dragged himself from the edge of the rooftop further into the shadows. He focused on listening to Frank’s breathing through the static of the cell phone. He was coming for him. Would find him. Matt would be safe soon.
That was the last thing he thought before he passed out from exhaustion and blood loss. When he woke again, he was in what could have passed for a hospital room. But from the silence outside the immediate room Matt knew he was more than likely in a room with the Night Nurse. He took a deep breath and began to take mental stock of his situation.
His uniform was off and he was laying in the bed in just his underwear and his mask. The bullet wounds felt like fire but not like infection. There was an IV in his arm hooked up to a saline drip with something else. He wasn’t feeling fuzzy around the edges so he was sure that whatever the other bag was was an antibiotic and not a pain killer. In fact, he was in a lot of pain which meant that no pain killers had been used at all. Good. Matt hated what being drugged did to his senses and would rather fight through the pain than the swamp of what pain killers did to his senses.
He knew for the time being he would be as safe as could be in what was considered neutral territory of the Night Nurse. Frank walked back into the room just as Matt was debating within on if he should move to get out of the bed or not but was afraid he’d be weaker than a new born kitten.
“So you’re awake now.”
Matt nodded, not bothering to turn his head in Frank’s direction.
“You’re a fucking idiot.” Frank said. But Matt heard the unsaid ‘you scared me’ in Frank’s words.
Matt half grinned. “But now we know there’s a rat in the precinct.”
“You are a fucking idiot.” Frank said again.
“And next time I’ll be prepared for that.” Matt continued as if Frank hadn’t said anything.
“You were shot, twice, and broke three ribs. There is no next time for you. I’ll handle it.”
He wanted to protest that he could finish what he had started but he was too tired. Blood loss was always a bitch to recover from and the Night Nurse only gave you a transfusion if you absolutely needed it. He wasn’t that close to death’s door. He just needed to meditate and then his body would heal up. “No, no, I’ve got it. I know who I can call to handle the crooked cops.”
Frank snorted. “If you let me handle it, we wouldn’t have to worry about any crooked cops.”
“No killing, Frank.” Matt said sternly. The stern effect was broken by the yawn that broke out of his mouth.
“Choir boy.” Frank whispered. He leaned down and kissed Matt’s forehead.
Matt smiled and felt the sleep pulling at him gathering strength. He wasn’t strong enough to fight it off. “Promise me, you won’t do anything until I can join you.” Matt said.
“Promise.” Frank gave in. Too easily. Matt knew it was a lie. But he couldn’t do anything as sleep crashed over him and pulled him back into the healing darkness.

there's a light - k. brekker
pairing: kaz brekker x reader.
genre/warning: a slight mention of a scar but fluff!
words: 1.2k.
summary: ketterdam was said to be the darkest of places. however, in your opinion, it's just a matter of knowing where to find the light.
Ketterdam was a strange place to call home. The never-ending sound of gunshots, the smell that came from the streets and the amount of people willing to do almost anything for money, all served as reasons to explain why the city wasn’t for everyone. However, if you are lucky enough, you’ll find something or someone in the city that reminds you not everything is darkness.
“I really don’t get what your obsession with sitting on windows is.” you heard a voice say from behind you, a voice you didn’t have to turn around to know who it belonged to.
“Yet you always seem to join me when i come here.” you replied, as you felt his body move to the opposite side of the window you were sitting on.
It was raining, so that meant the city got a break from the action for a night and the streets looked deserted for once. Every street corner told a story, and while the dim glow of the moonlight has tried not to shine on it and the water that comes with the rain has tried to wash it all away, you could still see it if you looked hard enough. You could see it on the pavement- every forgotten newspaper, every drop of dried blood and every broken cobblestone. You could see it on the walls that framed the thin corridors and you could see it in the wind as it blew through the city and took every disregarded memory with it. Most importantly, you could see it from above. The height gave you the opportunity to see every roof in which two lovers shared a last goodbye- hidden from their enemies, you could see every balcony door that was closed in hopes of keeping the rain out of their home. And if someone were to look up at that very moment, they would see two people using meaningless words to fill the room, while they danced around the truth and hid the depth of their feelings.
“Well, it is my room after all, you know?” he asked, with a slight raise of his brow while meeting your gaze.
“It’s the tallest one.” you shrugged. As you turned your eyes away from him to look out the window, you could feel his still on you, making your cheeks grow hot. Was it from embarrassment? Were you flustered? Or were you simply too tired? You preferred not to know. He noticed, despite your efforts to hide it with a small smile and a cheeky comment. “You know, a painting would last longer.”
“Could say the same about the city below us.” He challenged. “How was it you put it once? Paintings don’t tell stories as well as once sight?” he continued and you smiled, glad to know he remembers the things you tell him.
“And which stories would a painting of my face not be telling?” you asked, as you turned to face him with an amused smile on your lips.
“Well, for one, the scar you got on your first job as a member of the crew- above your eye but half hidden just below your eyebrow. The uneven lengths of different strands of your hair because you let nina cut it one too many times. That one mole that is so far up your forehead, it gets hidden by your hairline unless you tug your hair backwards. The little scratches on your hands because you refuse to give up trying to learn how to flip knives.” He listed as you held your breath, eyes wide at the possibility of finally admitting to each other what you’ve both known for a long time. “All these little stories wouldn’t show up on a painting, knowing them is a result of observing someone for minutes on end, everyday, until you feel like you’ve only been put on this earth to admire them.”
“And you do?” you asked, watching as he walked closer to your spot on the window, leaving his corner. All while keeping his eyes on you. “Observe and admire me, i mean.”
“I do.” He nodded.
“Because i’m a member of your crew and you need to keep an eye on all of us? You once said staring at everyone on the ranks had become second nature.” You tried, noticing how close the two of you were now that he had stopped walking towards you. You saw the corner of his lips quirk to the side, which was the closest you got to a smile with Kaz Brekker.
“But i didn’t say stare, did i?” he asked “What did i say?”
“Observe.”
“And?”
“And admire.” you finished with a whisper, struggling to meet his gaze.
“You think I observe and admire Matthias?” he continued, the same amusing quirk of his lips on his face. And you would’ve laughed, you truly would’ve, if everything racing through your mind at that moment hadn’t been how close he’d gotten, and how much you liked having him near. Instead, the noise that came out of you mouth sounded more like a huff of air.
“Why do you stare at me, then? If it’s not something you do with every one of us?” You asked.
Say it, you thought, say it aloud for only us and the deserted city below us to hear.
“You know why.” he answered. And you did, god, did you know. You knew why because you did the same, because you felt the same.
And somehow, hearing him say that, so much closer to you than he’d willingly gotten to anyone in such a long time. Hearing him say that as the sound of the rain served as your own makeshift background noise. Hearing him say that as he stared at you with so much intensity you swore you could read every thought in his mind just through his eyes. Somehow, hearing him say that: right here, right now- it was enough.
You stared at each other for what felt like an eternity, trying to say everything you couldn’t with words, with your eyes. The glow of the candle that was still lit beside you illuminated his face like it was the only place it was ever meant to shine on, and as your eyes moved from his own to explore his face you realized what he meant: every curve, every line, every scar on his face told a story that not even the greatest painter in the world could attempt to replicate. Your eyes continued travelling across his face as his stayed on your eyes, and when your gaze finally reached his lips, you felt him tense up.
“I-i can’t” he uttered in a tone that could only be described as ashamed, as if he was sorry he couldn’t offer that to you, but you weren’t expecting him to. You weren’t dumb, you could see his aversion to touch ran deeper than just wearing gloves when he was around people.
“I know.” you whispered, shifting your gaze back up to his eyes. “And I don't expect you to. Not now, and not ever if you’re not ready.” you continued. “We have time, and i’m not planning on going anywhere any time soon.”
“Neither am i.” He replied, and in his eyes you could see the relief he felt after what you said.
As you turned your gaze back to the city, you felt his eyes still on you- observing and admiring you, except this time you were aware. And when a slow breeze blew the candle that had been sitting next to you out, you found that every single light in Ketterdam could go out, and Kaz would still find a way of continuing to observe your face- and so would you.

REMINDER
a/n: i’ve had this idea on my mind all weekend and finally got around to write it! just a short little oneshot of Bucky finally realizing he should make his move 😌
pairing: Bucky X Reader
warnings: blood, gunshot
word count: 3.7k
masterlist
(gif is not mine)
Bucky hated Tony’s luxurious parties, but as part of the team, he could just never avoid them, someone always came into his room and forced him to join the others, telling him it would be so much fun. It was never. He doesn’t even know what he would find fun anymore, having his life back after all these torturous years, it’s hard to find what brings him happiness, but schmoozing with Tony’s friends and the team and all the agents is just not his cup of tea. He would rather hide in his room, read a book or catch up with whatever show he has been watching lately.
The night he met you was a similar one. Steve was the first one to drop by his room, trying to convince him to get dressed and join the rest of the team for a drink, but Bucky resisted until his friend gave up and left, but then came Natasha. She just always knew how to play the strings to make him do what she wanted. After a bit of persuasion he finally agreed to make an appearance, though he made it clear he wouldn’t be there too long.
After changing into a pair of dark jeans and a black long sleeved shirt that hid his metal arm quite well, he made his way to the party, already feeling grumpy that he had to socialize. It was just like the last time. He got himself a drink, talked a little to Steve, then Banner and Nat and then hid in the corner of the room, avoiding any new faces, not in the mood to introduce himself. He was about to sneak out and go back to his room finally when he first saw you.
You were a relatively new agent in the tower. Having only been there for a few weeks, you didn’t have the chance to meet Bucky since he was on a mission up until a few days ago. You were a bit of a social butterfly, it didn’t take you too long to make friends in the Tower and you found yourself getting the closest to Wanda for some reason.
When Bucky saw you that evening you were talking to her near a high table, nursing a drink in your hands. You wore a white, tight dress that made it no secret how much all the training had helped to form your body through the years. He couldn’t hear your voice, but when he saw your smile, he swore his heart skipped a beat.
Your eyes caught his gaze lingering on you and he quickly turned away, feeling his cheeks growing hot, as if he was a kid caught red-handed of something troublesome. Bucky hoped you didn’t notice it or that he didn’t cross any lines, asking for another drink for himself he was planning to chug the whole thing down and then leave before he could embarrass himself any more. What he was not expecting was you making your way towards him to introduce yourself to the man you’d only heard about, but hadn’t met. He was so busy with making up his plan about how to escape and then thanking his drink to the bartender, that he didn’t even notice you approaching him. So when he turned to the left and was about to walk away he bumped right into you, some of his vodka soda spilling to your dress, making it stick to your skin on your thigh.
“Oh shit, I-I’m so sorry, I didn’t—I wasn’t looking, I’m so so—“
“It’s alright,” you chuckled, shrugging your shoulders as you grabbed a few napkins from the bar to soak up some of the wetness.
“I totally ruined it, right? I’ll buy you another dress or pay for this one, I’m so sorry,” he kept rambling, feeling like a total idiot.
“It’s just a dress,” you smiled at him warmly. “It doesn’t matter.”
“Well, it’s… it’s a pretty dress,” Bucky found himself saying and when he saw your eyebrows raising, he almost wanted to take it back.
“I’m afraid we haven’t met before. I’m Agent Y/L/N and you must be Sergeant Barnes,” you smiled at him, holding out a hand for him that he took and delicately shook.
“Just… call me Bucky,” he nodded with a shy smile and that was the start of something new in his life.
He found himself bumping into you all the time, in the controlling room, the gym, the kitchen, you were everywhere. Though it might not had been that coincidental, Bucky found himself learning your routine pretty fast and made his own schedule according to that. He couldn’t help it, you were the sweetest and most beautiful creature he had ever seen and he found himself being drawn to you. And you didn’t mint it, not even a bit. A special bond started to form between the two of you, movie nights, shared missions, runs around the city, you always had something to do together and Bucky was falling for you more and more with every passing day.
Nat and Steve liked to tease him about his growing feelings, but utterly with the intention of forcing him to make a move finally.
“What are you waiting for, Barnes?” Nat questioned him one afternoon when she caught him eyeing you in the controlling room.
“What are you talking about?” he cleared his throat, pretending like he had no idea, but he wasn’t a good actor.
“Just ask her out.”
“No,” he shook his head, folding his arms on his chest.
“Why not? She has the same heart eyes for you that you have for her,” she rolled her eyes nodding in your way. You were sitting behind a desk, oblivious to the conversation that was happening across the room.
“She is just friendly. That’s all we are. Friends.”
“We are friends, Barnes. You and her? That’s more than that,” Nat pointed it out and he looked in your way, chewing on his bottom lip as he watched you type something out on the computer. As if you could feel his gaze on you, you looked up, eyes meeting his and a warm smile tugging on your lips. Bucky could feel his heart fluttering in his chest, just like every time you looked at him with those bright eyes of yours.
He couldn’t bring himself to make an actual move. He was always so afraid you’d reject him and the friendship you shared was one of the most important things in his life. He didn’t want to risk losing it. Besides, he always thought he would have time to figure out what to do. Even if he decided to confess to you, he couldn’t just do it out of the blue, he needed time which he thought he had. It was up until the two of you went on a mission together and it didn’t go according to plan.
You were supposed to stay together during the raid, but you convinced him to split up when you started chasing some bad guys and they parted ways.
“It’s going to be fine, Bucky. You go that way and I’ll meet you by the jet, alright?” you told him before running off the other direction. He wanted to go after you, not let you go alone, but he didn’t listen to his instinct.
Now he is running through the maze of hallways after you asked for help through the com. Natasha is on her way too, but she is way farther from your location than he is.
“Y/N? Are you alright?” he calls out, trying to find the right way. Gunshots are heard outside and Tony makes some stupid joke about Steve, but Bucky ignores it, he just wants to hear your voice.
“Yeah, but I’m out of bullets, hurry—“
A series of gunshots rips through the com and he hears your painful grunt, the sound of your whimper turning his blood cold right away.
“Y/N! Y/N what happened?!” he shouts, speeding down the hallways leading to the place where you’re supposed to be according to your tracker.
“I got—Shit I got shot,” you groan, the end fading out as your voice breaks.
He bursts through the double door and immediately sees the man that most likely shot you, holding up his gun Bucky shoots him in the chest so fast the guy didn’t even have time to aim at him.
“Y/N!” he calls out, frantically looking for you.
“Bucky!” he hears your faint voice coming from behind a desk. He sprints to you, kneeling down next to you and horror shakes through his whole body when he sees the relatively big pool of blood around you as you try to push your hands to the wound on your thigh. “I think… I think it grazed an artery,” you faintly tell him, a few tears rolling down your cheek.
“Fuck, no, no, stay with me, okay? You’re gonna be fine!” he tells you, ripping off the sleeve of his shirt, wrapping it around your leg as tight as possible to try to stop the bleeding. “Y/N was shot, she is losing blood rapidly. We need to get her out now!” he demands through the com while you are slowly losing your consciousness. “Don’t fall asleep, alright? Stay with me! Talk to me!” he begs you as he cradles you into his arms and heads out to the jet.
“I can’t…” you breathe out, your head falling to his shoulder as he carries you in bridal style.
“Of course you can. And you will. You are not dying on me, understood?”
“It’s not like… I have a choice,” you tell him with a faint smile, your eyes slowly closing.
“Y/N, don’t fall asleep! Just hang in there a little longer!”
He makes it out of the building, Natasha and Steve joining him on the way, the jet already waiting for them. You try to keep your eyes open, Bucky keeps asking you questions and doesn’t leaves you until he hears an answer.
“This was not how I imagined my death,” you mumble, lying on the floor of the jet as it takes off, heading back to the Tower where Dr. Cho is already waiting for you.
“It’s not that, Y/N, that’s not happening now. Just stay with me okay?” Bucky begs you, holding your hand in his while Natasha works on your leg, trying her best to keep you from losing any more blood.
“So eager to keep me alive, hmm?” you smile, eyes dropping closed, but Bucky squeezes your hand, making you to look at him.
“Of course. I still owe you a new dress, don’t I?” he tries to joke, but you don’t answer. You lost your fight and let yourself lose consciousness as Bucky keeps calling your name over and over again, but you never answer him.
The next twenty-four hours is a blur to both you and him as well. For him because he refuses to leave your side once you are out of Dr. Cho’s hands, he stays sitting on the uncomfortable chair by your bed no matter what as members of the team drop by every once in a while. And for you because you keep drifting in and out of consciousness, but you’re never strong enough to actually open your eyes, you only hear voices. Mostly Bucky’s.
One time you hear him talking to Steve, their voices sound distant, but you can understand the words clearly.
“I shouldn’t have let her go alone,” Bucky mumbles under his breath.
“It wasn’t your fault. You couldn’t have known this would happen,” Steve tries to convince her, but it sounds like Bucky is too stubborn to listen to his friend.
“We were supposed to stay together. It was my fault.”
You want to protest. You want to tell him it was none of his fault, but you can’t bring yourself to speak and the darkness pulls you in again, cutting you off of the world. Next time your mind wakes up, you hear Natasha’s soothing voice.
“Why don’t you go and sleep a little? I’ll stay with her,” she offers and that’s when you feel a warm hold on your left hand.
“No,” Bucky answers from beside you. “I’m staying, but thanks.”
“Alright, are you hungry then? I can bring you something.”
“I’m fine,” he answers shortly and you can tell just from his voice that he is so broken, beating himself over what happened. But once again, you are not strong enough to speak and you fall back asleep again.
But the third time you wake up you can actually bring yourself to open your eyes. The bright neon lights are a little blinding, so you need to blink a few times before you get used to them. It takes a couple of seconds to take in your surroundings and then your eyes fall on the sitting form next to your bed.
Bucky is reading a book you gave him a few weeks ago, it’s the first Hunger Games, you thought he would like the story a lot and judging from how far he is in it, he really does. He is so lost between the lines that he doesn’t realize that your eyes opened.
“Bucky?” you call out, your throat feels as dry as a desert and his blue eyes immediately snap at you, putting the book aside as he leans forward to grab your hand gently in his again.
“Hey! You’re awake! How are you feeling?” he asks you, brushing a strand of hair out of your forehead.
“Like shit,” you chuckle, making him smile as well, but his eyes still hold a lot of pain from seeing you like this. “I’m thirsty.”
“Here.” He grabs a bottled water from the bedside table and pours some into a paper cup, helping you drink it and you feel like you were reborn.
“Thanks. What… How long have I been out?” you ask, pushing yourself up a bit so you’re leaning against the headboard.
“A little over a day. Dr. Cho said it could take you a few days to wake up after all the blood you lost.”
Now that he has brought it up, you realize that your thigh is wrapped up, a constant, blunt pain gripping your nerves. You push the white covers off of yourself so you can take a look at the slightly bloody bandages hugging your leg. You already know it will leave a nasty scar on you.
“I should have been there,” Bucky speaks up seeing you eyeing your leg. You look at him shaking your head.
“No. You couldn’t have known and I was the one who told you to go the other way. It wasn’t your fault.”
“But I could have just told you no. I should have.”
“Bucky, stop,” you breathe out, gripping his hand tight in your hold. “You brought me out of there, practically saved my life. If anything I should be thanking you.”
“But I shouldn’t have let it happen in the first pla—“
“Shut up, Sergeant,” you chuckle softly. “I’m still here, aren’t I? Isn’t that all that matters?”
Bucky’s face softens as he stares back at you nodding shortly. He can’t even describe how thankful he is to hear your voice again, the silence in the room was like torture for him, watching you lie on the bed completely still and there was nothing he could do to help you. But now he has you back and this whole fiasco made him realize that he doesn’t have all the time in the world with you.
Your recovery is faster than expected thanks to Helen’s amazing work. Two days after you woke up you are dismissed and you are back in your own room. Bucky has been by your side all along and you had to send him back to his room during the night because he wanted to sleep in that uncomfortable chair again. Eventually you convinced him to get some sleep but he was already in the room when you woke up in the morning. Now that you are out of medical care he is still following you like a little puppy, ready to do anything you need help with.
“You know, I just have to use my clutch for a few more days, but I’m totally fine,” you chuckle when he helps you put your stuff away arriving back to your room while you lie down.
“I know, but I want to help,” he smiles, nodding shortly. “And… I have something for you,” he then adds with a boyish smile.
“A surprise?”
“An ‘I’m glad you didn’t die during mission’ surprise,” he smirks, making you chuckle. He shuffles out of the room and then returns with a baby blue paper bag in his hands. Walking over to the bed he sits to the edge handing the gift to you.
“When did you have time to buy it? You never even left my side,” you ask with a suspicious look.
“Nat helped me a little,” he admits with a nervous chuckle. You dig into the bag and your fingers find a soft material, making you gasp before you could even see the item. You just already know what it is. Pulling out you’re staring at a white dress, similar to the one you wore at the party the two of you met officially. The one he spilled his drink on and promised to buy a new one.
“Bucky, you shouldn’t have,” you breathe out, eyes softening at the man who is now eyeing you with a gentle look, clearly feeling shy and nervous about the gift.
“I don’t know if you remember it but when we were in the jet I told you I still owe you one,” he explains as you lay the fabric across your legs, smoothing your hand over the silky fabric as you smile to yourself.
“I do remember that. Actually, that’s the last thing I remember.”
“I wanted to keep my word,” he mumbles under his breath.
Pushing yourself up from the bed you are about to head into the bathroom when he stops you in panic.
“Where are you going?” he asks, clearly wanting you to return to bed.
“I’m gonna try it on, don’t you want to see me in it?” you ask coyly and you see his cheeks blushing at your question before he just nods shortly.
It’s a little challenging to put it on, but you manage to succeed, walking out with your clutches, bare feet and your hair in a messy ponytail, but still, Bucky’s breath gets caught in his chest when he sees you. Suddenly, you feel self-conscious about the way you look, especially with the ugly bandages on your thigh that peek out from under the dress. Stepping to the mirror next to your dresser you take a look at yourself, expression hardening when you see that the scar will probably be seen from under most of your dresses once it’s healed. You try to tug the dress down a little to hide the bandage, but there’s no use, it’s showing no matter what.
Bucky realizes what you’re doing and stepping closer to you he takes your hand that’s fumbling with the fabric and keeps it between his palms.
“All my previous battle wounds are hidden somewhere, but this one will be on full display,” you whisper sadly, eyes dropping to the floor. Bucky cups your cheek in his hand and makes you look up into his eyes with a soft smile on his lips.
“It’s nothing to be ashamed of.”
“I know, I just…” you sigh, not even sure what you wanted to say.
“You know, in a way this…” He starts, brushing his fingers through the bandage gently. “This is going to be a reminder for me.”
“A reminder?”
“Yeah,” he nods. “Because I always thought I have all the time in the world with you, but I almost lost you. And I don’t want to waste any more time.”
His hands find your waist, pulling you into his embrace as your palms slide up his arms to the base of his neck. You are both so nervous to be this close without sparring, your heart is beating so fast, he can probably hear it, but he feels the same way.
“If you think of me as just a friend, now might be the best time to tell me,” he whispers with a soft chuckle that makes you smile too. You lean closer, your nose touching his, lips almost brushing against each other.
“You are so much more than that,” you breathe out before he closes the gap between the two of you, kissing you the way he wanted to so many times before.
It’s like the rest of the world stops existing, there’s only you and him, his lips on yours, fingers digging into your waist, flesh and metal ones as well, bunching your dress under his touch as you press up against him, your kisses growing hungrier with each passing moment.
When it’s just about to get a little more heated, someone clears their throat and you are forced to snap back to reality, seeing Steve and Nat standing at the door, watching the two of you grinning widely.
“Just wanted to check on you Y/N to see if you need help with anything, but you clearly have everything you need,” Natasha teases you, making your cheeks heating up as you rest your forehead against Bucky’s shoulder, his arms circling around you tight, hands running up and down your back soothingly.
“Glad to see you finally made your move, Bucky,” Steve nods smirking.
“Alright, alright. The show is over, guys,” Bucky waves them off. Natasha winks at you before leaving the two of you alone.
“We will never hear the end of this,” you growl, your head dropping back, but Bucky just smiles and kisses your forehead sweetly.
“If they keep teasing us we’ll just kick their ass,” he grins making you laugh before you press your lips against his again in a short, chaste kiss.
“Deal.”

The music was blaring, sending vibrations through her body as she swayed to the fast beat. Drink sloshing around as she waved her arms around her above her head. This was it. This was living. Drunk, surrounded by strangers. No one knew her and she knew no one. She was free. And it was incredible.
Going to clubs alone was dangerous, she couldn't remember the number of times her mother had warned her not to. She must have been rolling in her grave at her daughter not only going to a club alone, but to a club in Madripoor no less. The thrill that anything could happen only exciting her more. That, and knowing that the Powerbroker wouldn't let anything happen to her, wouldn't let anyone lay a finger on her. That was the perk of being enhanced and not looking like it, it made you useful.
She had lost track of the hours, and the drinks, thinking only of how good the music made her feel. Of how nothing had felt this good in so long.
She waded through the sea of people, already locking eyes with the bartender as she made a beeline for the bar. She was stopped in her tracks, however, by a wall of bodies.
An almost animalistic growl ripped through her as she slapped her hand down on the shoulder of the man in the middle, a big fur collar adorning his coat. A hard hand gripped her wrist in response and her eyes shifted slowly from the back of man one to the owner of the hand.
Her eyes widened at who they landed on, then narrowed to barely visible slits. Yanking her hand back she didn't break her glare.
"I'm sorry, Dove, did we cut in?" The voice of the middle man broke her chain of thought, and when she looked back to him, he had turned to face her. "How about we buy you a drink to apologise."
"I don't want your handouts, Baron." Venom dripped from her words as she spat back her response. She wedged herself between the Baron and the third man, not someone she recognised, to snatch the drink the bartender placed out for her. "Besides, I don't pay here anyway, don't want you wasting your money."
She was about to work her way back through the crowd of people and to the middle of the dance floor again when she had a thought.
"Hold the fucking phone." Spinning on the spot, her eyes narrowed again, this time at the Baron, but that didn't stop her from seeing the man to his left step forward defensively.
"How are you even here? Last I heard you were stuck in a prison in Germany." Her drink was down and she slammed the glass down on the bar, getting threateningly close to him as she did. "Thought you were never getting out after what you did to them." Her sentence trailed off as her eyes flicked to the man next to him, the one with the metal arm.
The Baron offered her his signature smug smile. "Some people had other plans."
"Well, whatever you're planning," She closed the gap between them further. The shifting of bodies next to them was halted with a raise of the Baron's hand. "Stay the fuck away from me." Hatred seeped from her whole body.
Snatching the new drink that was placed on the bar, her gaze was turned to the apparent bodyguard.
"And I'd think twice before you lay a hand on me again." There was no response, but a subtle cocky smirk instead that only heated her further. She was gone before any of them could speak another word to her.
She was only able to start enjoying herself once more when the sight of the three men had disappeared, then, she was able to let her guard down and the beat of the music slowly took her over again. Until she got a call.
Plugging her other ear so she could hear, she took mental note of the location she was told to move to. The call ended abruptly, they always did with the Powerbroker, but this one was serious. She had begun picking up on the subtle differences between the calls.
Her gun was pulled from her thigh holster as she advanced towards the room Selby used for meetings.
She listened from a distance, the ability being one of many. A phone rang. An awkward silence as the conversation started. Names were thrown around, first Smiling Tiger. 'Yeah, that guy was definitely not Smiling Tiger', she thought to herself as she listened, remembering her run in with him one time. The phone call ended with a goodbye to "Sam"?
There were gunshot before she had time to process anything further.
Kicking the door down, she stepped through slowly, gun raised. It had fallen silent, the three men stood in the middle of the room.
"Holy fuck, what did you do?" Her voice was a mix of shock and anger. The men snapped their heads up.
"Things didn't exactly go according to plan, Dove." The Baron regretfully shrugged as he looked around at the collection of bodies on the floor, inclusive of Selby's.
"Well, why the fuck am I-" A fifth person joined the room before she could finish.
"Because the Powerbroker requested it." Sharon Carter approached her, stone-faced. “And nobody disobeys the Powerbroker.”
“I don’t know, I might’ve had I know it was for these idiots.” She was dead serious as she said it, glaring at the men responsible for the bodies strewn about.
Sharon shot the other woman a look, a look that said ‘you better cut it out right now’.
"Don't, Minka." Sharon's use of the others' nickname amplified the seriousness of it all.
The men in the room didn’t know it, but she, Minka, was the only one who knew who the Powerbroker really was. And you could say she was somewhat of a bodyguard for them.
“The Powerbroker requested it. End of, so get over it.” Sharon snapped at her.
“I can’t believe you’re helping these people.” Her grip on her gun tightened as she interrogated Sharon. “After everything that happened last time.” Her sentence ended with a scoff, clicking on the safety of her gun. She didn't place it back in her holster just yet though.
“Enough.” Sharon’s remark was a bark. An order. “Whether you like it or not, you’re involved now, you’ve seen the bodies. You’re part of it now.”
Minka just glared at her, mumbling “lucky me” under her breath as her daggers turned to the men again. Her anger only bubbled more when she saw the one with the metal arm, the Winter Soldier, staring right back, something she couldn’t quite pick up on behind his cold eyes.
Many hours and gun fights later, everyone made it Sharon's place alive, much to the acrimony of some of them. Of Minka.
"You have a beautiful place, Miss Carter." Baron was walking around, admiring the art as he made the genuine compliment, but he was being eyed. Sharon's personal guard wasn't about to let him touch, ruin, anything.
"Don't touch anything, and get changed, everyone knows what we're wearing now." The last part was directed at the whole group. "And you look like shit, too." Her nose scrunched as she looked them over. Even her associate was included in the statement.
Sharon watched as her figure retreated to the room she had set up, she was there often enough to warrant her own one, and then directed the men to where they could pick out some clothes and change.
There was a soft thump as her body landed on the bed, and she released a long sigh into the covers.
"Yeah, Sharon, I'm not in the mood." Her voice was mumbled from the bed, but was loud enough to hear the frustration.
"Minka, huh?" That was not the voice of Sharon Carter. Her head snapped up to face the door to her room that she swore she locked.
"You don't get to call me that." If looks could kill, the man in the doorframe would have dropped to the floor in record time.
"Is that not your name, Doll?" Arms folded over his chest, a mix of metal and flesh.
"Is your name The Winter Soldier?" The words were laced with malice as she slid off the bed, moving towards him to push him out of her room, her safe space. "Now if you don't mind getting the fuck away from me."
A heavy boot stopped the door from clicking into place, his metal hand forcing it back open, eyes dark. "No, I don't think I will." He stepped into the room, pushing the door closed behind him. This time it was her that stopped the door from closing, hand gripped tightly on the handle, pulling back.
"You've got some fucking nerve coming here like that." Minka yanked the handle as the soldier pushed the door harder, breaking it clean off. "Coming back into Sharon's life like you aren't the one that fucked it up in the first place." The handle dropped with a loud thud.
For a moment, something flashed through his eyes. Regret? Sadness? Whatever it was lasted a mere second before he regained control.
"So, you're like me?" His gaze dropped to the handle on the ground, taking the opportunity to gaze down her body as he did.
It was all she could do from punching him right then and there. "Absolutely not!" If the venom in her voice wasn't evident before, it definitely was now. "I don't kill innocents."
The tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. The soldier staring down darkly at the smaller woman.
"It's Bucky."
Her eyes narrowed. "What?"
"My name, it's Bucky. And you can call me that."
She couldn't hold back the scoff that fell from her lips. "I won't be calling you anything. After all this shit is cleaned up, you'll never see me again."
Bucky's head tilted ever so slightly, his voice soft but dark. "I wouldn't be so sure of that." But before she was able to punch question him, Sharon's voice bellowed through the building.
"Downstairs, now."
The pair ripped their eyes from each other, Minka's falling to the handle on the floor. "I'm telling her you broke that. Now fuck off so I can change." And she shoved him out of the room, closing the door over between them, making sure to not close it the whole say so she could actually get out when she was ready.
By the time she had finished getting ready and made her way down to everyone else, people had begun meandering in, admiring the art.
"Took you long enough." Sharon walked up behind her, whispering harshly in her ear.
"Yeah, well you can thank your old friend for that. He's an asshole, by the way." "And he's not a friend." "Well he's the reason I need a drink." She turned to face Sharon, giving her a look of 'I hate you for dragging me into this' before heading to the bar, fully intending on double parking it the whole night.
It didn't take long for her to finally loosen up again, 5 drinks to be exact, and be back in the middle of the dance floor, surrounded by sweaty bodies. It may have been an art auction, but nothing was ever not a party in Madripoor, especially if it was organised by the Powerbroker themself.
Minka was so caught up in the moment that she had forgotten entirely about the events of the day, the people of the day.
She had, yet again, lost track of the number of drinks she'd had. But every drink handed her way was downed immediately, not taking any time to register where, or more like who, they were coming from. That was always her greatest weakness, denying alcohol.
She was happily about to take yet another unknown drink being handed to her, when it was snatched from her reach and discarded on a nearby table.
"Hey, what the fuck, that was mine!" She growled, turning with her fist ready to launch into whoever had the nerve to steal her drink.
"Stop taking drinks from strangers, are you an idiot?" Suddenly the memories of the men she had to deal with throughout the day came flooding back. "You're gonna get spiked- in fact, you were about to with that one."
"What? Have you been keeping an eye on me? That's not very Winter Soldier of you." Her tone was mocking as she glared up at Bucky, struggling to stand thanks to the combination of copious amounts of alcohol and continuous movement of people around her.
Bucky placed his large hands on her biceps to keep her steady, eyes narrowing at her words. "You really don't know how to be nice to people, do you?"
"You really don't know how to stay the fuck away from people that don't like you, do you?" She retorted immediately, pulling herself from his grip. "I don't need a goddamn babysitter, especially not you. You don't exactly have the best track record with protecting people." Her back was turned to him and stalking off before she even finished her sentence, but she was yanked back in by her forearm.
"Yeah, I don't think so. You're being watched like a hawk by at least 3 men. Who knows how many of them are trying to spike you and get you separated from the crowd." Bucky's eyes were anywhere but hers, scanning the vast room for anything suspicious, clearly on high alert.
"I don't understand why you fucking care?" Bucky's eyes snapped down to hers, alarmed by her intensity.
"Keep your voice down or you're gonna draw attention to us." He hissed at her, lowering his head and pulling her arm to move her closer to him.
"Good, maybe security will see you're harassing me and escort you out." She snarled, anger rising with every word he spoke. "I'm just looking for a good fucking night and you've managed to ruin it twice now."
"Well take it up with Sharon then, she's the one that told me to keep an eye on you. So clearly she thinks you do need a babysitter." He dropped her arm, that would be enough to keep her in her spot for now.
"You're lying." Her words were barely above a whisper, eyes narrowed at him. "She knows I can hold my own. She's literally hired me for personal protection before."
"Clearly not this time." Bucky's eyes were back to scanning the room. "Not with the types of people here tonight." Minka couldn't help but scoff.
"Oh, because you know Madripoor, right? You've spent how many years here? Oh, that's right, none." She suddenly saw her opportunity to escape, Bucky's eyes not trained on her and her arms free.
"Tell her, as much as I appreciate it, she can shove it." And with that she had weaved her way though the crowd of bodies.
But her abandonment didn't last nearly as long as she had hoped.
All of a sudden she was being pushed against the far wall of the room where she was escaping to, breath knocked out of her.
"What the fu-" Lips landing on hers cut off her protests. Her eyes widened when she realised who said lips belonged to.
"Get off of me!" She spat when she was finally able to push Bucky off. "What the fuck is wrong with you?"
"People are following you. If they know you're with me they're less likely to try something."
"I'm not with you. In fact, I want to be as far away from you as physically possible right now." Bucky's arms, which were trapping her in by pressing against the wall either side of her face, fell to his side. His face turned emotionless for a moment before returning to his usual arrogant demeanour.
"You can't tell me you didn't feel the spark." He winked, a cocky grin plastered on his face when he saw the heat creep to her cheeks.
"Please, you wish there was a spark." Her eyes rolled as she paused. "I've had knife fights with more spark than that."
"Maybe we should have a knife fight sometime then." Bucky's response was quick, and smooth.
"Have you forgotten that you're never going to see me again after all this shit? Although," Minka tapped her chin in mock thought. "If you're offering to let me stab you, I'll gladly take you up on that." Unlike Bucky's, her face held no semblance of humour.
"I'm sure you'll change your mind by the end of it." Bucky eyed her suggestively.
"God, please don't tell me you're into me. Maybe I do want those supposed guys to take me, seems better than the alternative." She groaned at the thought of having to deal with him fawning after her.
Bucky's face indicated that that was definitely not he case. His eyes, however, suggested her words had hurt him a little. "God, never. But if you really want, I can hand deliver you to them myself." He pointed in the direction of said men.
Her nose crinkled. "Okay, maybe not them."
"Yeah, that's what I thought."
"Sharon, we have a serious problem!" Minka stormed into the kitchen after the last few people had left and the party was over, Bucky not far behind her. "So I need a babysitter now? I thought I was the personal protection around here." Her fist collided heavily with the table.
"You are," Sharon looked at her nonchalantly as she poured herself a glass of whiskey. "Until alcohol is involved. You're as useless as that new Captain America when there's booze around." A sip. "Case in point." Sharon hummed, watching your eyes follow her glass from bench, to mouth, to bench again.
"Oh please." She snorted. "And you thought pairing me with this idiot was a good idea?" He hand gestured back to Bucky at idiot, not caring if it offended him. "He just makes me want to drink more."
Sharon was about to give her a look, but Minka just shook her head, throwing her hands up. "No, I'm not dealing with this tonight. I'm going to bed." "Take him with you." Sharon nodded towards Bucky.
"Oh fuck no, why the fuck would I-" "Because everyone knows you're involved, and your head is on a spike now, too. They want you dead, Minka." She couldn't argue with Sharon when she used her nickname for her. And the pain in her voice was evident.
"Fine, but you're sleeping on the floor." Bucky just shrugged, "nothing new."
"You sleep there." A finger pointed to the sofa on the far side of the room. Conveniently away from the bed. "I'll get you a blanket."
Bucky's brow quirked. "I thought I was on the floor?" He feigned confusion, head tilting to the side before his cocky smirk returned.
"Keep going and you will be." The blanket was thrown at his face, along with a pillow.
"A pillow too? Wow, it's like a 5 star hotel." She just glared.
"If you snore, you're out. If you sleep talk, you're out. You make any sort of noise and you're out. Capisce?"
"Guess it's a good thing I don't sleep then, huh?" Bucky threw the blanket and pillow onto the sofa.
"Now see, that just makes it weird. Like that scene from Twilight." "Well, yeah, when you put it like that it is." His face screwed up at the thought, recalling the scene.
"How do you- Actually no, I'm tired and I don't care." She had been about to ask how he understood the reference, but decided that was going to open a whole can of worms that she didn't care about.
"I may be over 100, but I have seen Twilight. Wanda made me watch it with her." He didn't need to be a mind reader to know what she was about to ask. And he didn't blame her, it probably would be surprising that a 106 year old had seen Twilight.
"Don't worry, Doll, I won't stare. Much." And now it was her turn to scrunch her face up.
"If you fucking touch me, I'll rip that metal arm from your body and shove it so far up your ass." Her sentence trailed off, however, when Bucky stepped closer to her, his gaze intense as he looked down at her.
"And how do you think I would touch you?" Another step closer, making her step back and gulp.
With her mouth agape, Minka was lost for words, probably for the first time in her life. Sharon unknowingly came to her rescue, though, when she knocked on the door while entering.
"Set your alarm for 6," Her eyes narrowed at them both and the distance, or lack there of, between them. "We've gotta be out of here asap tomorrow. Make sure you get enough sleep." "Will do, Sharon." Minka's gaze flicked to her, nodding once before she left the room, confusion plastered on her features.
"Right, well that's bed time then." Her tongue ran over her lips nervously, and she was painfully aware of Bucky's eyes watching. "I'm going to get changed." She turned and basically ran to the bathroom attached to her room.
"I'll be out here waitin'." "You're disgusting, don't think anything." "Wouldn't dream of it, doll."

A Series of Break Ins
bucky x black female reader
Summary: Someone breaks into your apartment
Warnings: break ins, lil bit of violence, wounds + blood
Words: 1617
A/N: Inspiration from @write-it-motherfuckers ( prompt is in bold somewhere below) :) some wonderful stuff on that blog
-------
January.
You lived in an old building in a shitty part of town. The loft kind that was once an office or a factory or something. Lots of windows. Terrible heat bill in the winter. You heard gunshots and fighting frequently. It wasn’t your dream home. No, your windows faced a manufacturing building with no windows. From your fire escape, if you stretched really far, you could cross the alley and touch the building. You only did that once though because the fire escape was rickety and not very safe.
That particular night, you were coming home from a mediocre date with a guy named Marcus. Usually you’d take a cab home, but your budget was tight this month. So you weaved through the alleys, the cold and the dark making you more jumpy than usual. You just wanna be home, with your warm fuzzy socks on and a glass of wine.
Your anxiety settles once you make it into your building. You take the steps two a time to your third floor studio. You open your door, shutting it quickly and leaning back against it.
That’s when the hairs on your arm stand up. Your eyes shoot open and your breath catches. Your kitchen light is on. You know it was not on when you left earlier. In your kitchen sits your first aid kit dumped out on the table.
You grab the baseball bat you keep next to the door and check every crevice of your home. Nothing.
You return to the kitchen, hesitantly. Next to the first aid kit is a napkin with a note: Sorry for the intrusion. I’ll replace everything I used. Thanks. - BB
You just looked at the note and blinked. Who the fuck had been in your apartment?!
The next day there’s a package outside your door containing the promised replacements from the stranger. There’s another note: Sorry again. -BB
You’re not quite sure what to do. Call the police? And say what- someone broke in, left no trace and then replaced what they stole? They would think you’re crazy.
February.
After the break in you upped your security. You got a deadbolt, a door chain, and a magnetic sensor on your front door that rang and alerted your phone when set off.
You felt pretty good about your upgrade… until it happened again. You’d come home late from drinks with a friend unlocked the door, then the deadbolt.
The light in your kitchen was on again. You grabbed your bat immediately, ready to swing on whoever was dumb enought to break into your house yet again.
“Whoa, whoa ma’am. Please don’t--” but you did. Whack him that is. Three times. And then a black gloved hand stopped your swings dead and blue eyes lock with yours.
“Holy fucking shit. B. B! It was you. Fucking Bucky Barnes broke into my house!”
He nods and watches your face as it goes from rage to confusion and then back to rage. You let go of the bat and he puts it behind him. “Look, I am really sorry. I know this is probably terrifying--”
“Yeah ‘cause I thought you were a god damn serial killer--not an Avenger!” You plop down onto a kitchen chair.
Bucky stared at you amused. “This is not how I thought this would go…”
“Don’t you have some Avenger place you can go and get fixed up? Instead of breaking into civilian households?” you sigh irritatedly.
“No. For one I’m not an Avenger…. And uh, two… I got hurt doing something not necessarily sanctioned by the government.” Bucky looked up at the ceiling bashfully.
“My god, you’re doing vigilante shit,” you breathed out a laugh.
Bucky shrugged, “You could call it that.” He wrung his gloved hands together. “I should go… I’ll send you replacements for the stuff I used. ”
“Or you could just not break into my house.” Bucky chuckled, before climbing out the window. “You could use the door!’
The man has the audacity to laugh as he closes your window, “Thanks again, doll.”
You let out a groan, wondering why on earth he chose your apartment and why on earth you weren’t more pissed off about it.
March
You’re dead asleep when you hear a thud on the fire escape outside your window. Your heart thuds like a bass drum as scenarios of you being murdered flash through your head. A stabbing. A shooting. God, please not a strangling. Then there’s a persistent tapping. You pretend to still be asleep, holding your breath and not moving.
“I know you're awake. I need to .. uh utilize your first aid kit again. Please, doll.”
Relief hits you like a wave and you flick the light on and get out of bed. You open the window and Sergeant Barnes slips through the space, holding his flesh arm, but not really effectively stopping the blood.
The two of you stand there for a second, until you remember that you don’t sleep with pants on and awkwardly move around him to find a pair of shorts. You find him sitting at your kitchen table again, waiting for you to get the first aid kit, like he doesn’t have a goddamn metal arm on him.
“For fuck’s sake…” You pull it out from under the sink and set it in front of him with a thud. Bucky smirks sheepishly. “Did you get shot again?” you ask after a while. He nods once as he gets to work. “Aren’t you like... super?” He nods. “Won't it heal super fast?” He nodded once again. “So what’s the point of the first aid kit?”
“You ask a lot of questions,” he sighs irritatedly.
You narrow your eyes, “Oh dear, am I inconveniencing you?”
He stops and looks up at you through his dark lashes. “Sorry. I’m being rude. What's your name anyway?”
You roll your eyes, but you tell him.
He cleans after himself and then stands. “Thank you again. Y/n.”
You ignore the lil shiver you get when he says your name, “Is this gonna be a regular thing Sargeant?”
Bucky flashed you a charming smile, “Do you want it to be, doll?”
You cross your arms and set you glare, “You have five seconds before I get my bat.”
Bucky let out a very boyish laugh before dramatically making his exit via the window again.
Over the next few days, you consider getting locks for the windows, but for some reason you just don’t.
Two weeks later, you open your door, arms full of groceries, and find Bucky sitting on the floor of your kitchen once more, first aid kit open in front of him. You’re not even surprised really.
“Ah, Hello again. We really need to stop meeting like this.”
You scoff, “Maybe we would, if you would sTOP BREAKING INTO MY FUCKING HOUSE!!” You toss your purse on the couch.
Bucky laughs and the winces and groans. It’s then that you realize he’s very pale in the face and his flesh hand isn’t gloved it’s just dark with blood.
You drop the groceries roughly on the table, “Shit Bucky. Are you-- You’re bleeding a lot!”
“I’m fine, doll.”
“I don’t think you are….” You panic, reaching for your phone, but remembering it’s deep in your purse across the room.
“You gotta-- you’re gonna have to sew it up, okay?”
“Let me just call an ambulance,” you get up to get your phone, but he grabs your wrist firmly.
“No. You can do this Y/n. I’ll walk you through it.” Something in his blue eyes assures you. You nod and Bucky has you cut his shirt off before he leads you through the cleaning of his wound. Your face felt hot at the sight of his beautiful broad chest, despite the mess around you. Bucky guided you, wincing and jaw ticking as you closed up his wound. By the end, your hands are red and sticky and you’re quite nauseous, but you didn’t care. The color was already back in his face and the sparkle back in his blue eyes. “You did good, doll.”
“I can’t believe I did that,” you say breathily. Bucky smiled fondly at you. You get up, wash your hands thoroughly and gently help Bucky up and to your couch. “You want something to eat? Let me get you some water.” You don’t wait for an answer before going to the kitchen. You bring him a bottle of water, a beer, and left over orange chicken from last night’s dinner- he inhaled all three while you cleaned and sanitized your kitchen floor.
“I should head out,” he stood up stiffly, favoring his wounded side. “I’m sorry about all this…” he gestured towards his wound and then to your kitchen. “It won't happen again. I’ll get my own first aid kit.”
You shrug, “You basically bought mine with as much as you use it.” You stick your hand out. “Phone.” Bucky eyes you warily before obeying. “How about next time you need to use my first aid kit, you just call first?”
Bucky smiles a lopsided, goofy smile, as you put your number in. “I think I can do that.”
Three days later, Bucky calls you around 7pm. Thirty minutes later there’s a knock at your door - not your window.
“What’s bleeding now--”
Instead of beat up and bleeding, Bucky stands before you in a black button up with a bouquet of flowers and a bag of take out. “Hey doll. I wanted to really apologize for everything and try to make it up to you,” he gives you a sheepish grin.
You can’t contain your own smile. “Well, orange chicken and flowers are a good start. Come in.”

Green Thumb

Part 19
Request: Yes or No
In the last few chaps two years have passed, in this one three have passed so the five year gap is overrrr. Endgame is three goddamn hours longgg. I'm sorry this one feels short. I just hate doing more than one or two timeskips
~
"I'll visit soon, Sarah. Tell the boys I said hi, alright?" You smiled softly, saying bye to Sarah before hanging up. You sighed softly, putting your phone down. You buried your face in your hands, sighing heavily. You heard your phone buzz, looking at the text on screen.
Starks Bitch Ass
You still coming for dinner?
You picked up the phone, going to answer Tony before you got another text. You furrowed your brows, clicking on it.
Nat
I need your help
(Y/N)
With?
Nat
You know
You frowned, gaze lifting to the picture of the Barton family, your family. You sighed again, eyes shutting briefly. The last time you had seen Clint had been three years ago.
Nat
And also with Stark
Nat
We're outside
You scoffed, standing up and walking to the front door. You watched the car stop, dust and dirt flying up behind it. You went down the steps, approaching the car. You saw Steve driving, Natasha in the passenger seat.
"How you been, (Y/N)?" Steve asked, unlocking the doors.
"Shitty." You got in the back, glancing at Scott.
"I thought you were dead."
"I thought you were like fifteen last time I saw you." Scott replied, looking you over. You cocked a brow, putting on a seatbelt.
"So.. What do you need me for?" You asked, brows furrowing.
"Convincing Tony of time travel." Natasha answered as Steve began to drive. You stared at her, confusion evident in her face. Scott noticed, clearing his throat.
"Okay, so-"
"If it has to do with science or math, I don't want to hear about it. I'll only get a headache." You waved him off, leaning back against the seat and shutting your eyes. You took a nap on the drive, waking up when the car came to a stop. You yawned, getting out of the car and walking towards the the lodge.
"Momo!" You called, smiling softly. Morgan's eyes lit up, wiggling in her dads grip. Tony set her down, watching her quickly run over to you. You chuckled, picking her up.
"Hey, Momo. Missed me?" You asked with a gentle smile. Tony turned and headed into the lodge.
"We didn't get to finish our story." Morgan said, pouting. You chuckled, watching Tony bring out a tray with drinks. The others stood at the porch, explaining their idea to Tony.
"And you came along because..?" Tony turned to look at you after you convinced Morgan to head inside while the adults talked. You took a seat, shrugging lightly.
"Had nothing better to do." You replied. You slightly spaced out as they spoke about science stuff, taking the drink Tony offered. You looked at the nature around the area, eyes squinting slightly.
"Are you gonna entertain this, (Y/N)?" Tony questioned, turning to look at you. You looked back at him.
"Wouldn't hurt to try, Tony." You said softly. Tony stayed silent, sighing through his nose. He turned his head when Morgan came running out of the lodge, climbing onto her dads lap.
"Mommy said to come save you." Morgan said. Tony held her, standing up as he looked at everyone. His gaze settled on you.
"Will you be joining us for dinner?" He asked, brows raising slightly. You licked your lips.
"Yeah, I suppose so." You nodded, standing up and smiling softly at Morgan. Tony nodded, walking inside. You looked at Natasha.
"Let me know when you find out where he is." You told her. Natasha understood, nodding. You followed Tony into the lodge.
"Tony-"
"You were brought along to convince me. I knew it." Tony set Morgan down, facing you with his hands on his hips. You gave a small nod.
"Yeah, I was. I wanted to see you as well. Nat wants to find Clint." You told him gently. Tonys' gaze softened, nodding. He had Morgan go to Pepper before sitting down on the couch.
"You ready?" He asked gently. You sat on the couch, grabbing a pillow a gently hugging it. You stayed silent, staring at the floor.
"I don't know. I.. I don't know if I'll punch him or scream at him when I see his face."
"I wouldn't blame you. I'll punch him next time I see him."
"Tony." You shot him a look, raising your brows. Tony shrugged, leaning back in the couch. You watched him, shifted and sitting criss cross.
"So, the.. Time heist-"
"Is the stupidest idea I've ever heard."
"Can you at least give it a try? Stop being a Negative Nancy, that's my job." You gently kicked his leg.
"If his theory even works.. Who's to say we can snap them back? What if we make things worse? Make that fifty percent into twenty percent?" Tony questioned. You could understand his concerns. He had a kid to worry about.
"I know, Tony.. Could you at least.. Think it over? Do some small tests?" You asked softly. Tony stayed silent, thinking it over. He took in a deep breath, rolling his eyes when he noticed your puppy eyes.
"Fine! Fine, I'll have F.R.I.D.A.Y run over some tests after dinner."
"Thank you."
~~~~~~~~~~
"You think you're up to this?" Natasha asked softly as the jet neared Tokyo. You nodded, watching the city lights come into view.
"Yeah, of course." You replied softly, slight nerves bubbling in your stomach. Natasha gently grabbed your hand, giving it a light squeeze. You gave her a small smile. Natasha landed the jet in an empty parking lot, getting out. Natasha took out an umbrella, wrapping an arm around you to keep you under it. You and Natasha followed the sound of gunshots, hearing them ease. You slowed down, watching Clint kill a man. You swallowed.
"You shouldn't be here." Clint said. Hearing his voice made your jaw clench.
"Neither should you." Natasha replied, watching him. Clint turned to face you and Natasha, features hard. His gaze softened when he saw you before he looked away.
"I have a job to do." Clint said, the water dripping down his face. You scoffed softly, stepping out from under the umbrella. You didn't mind the rain as you walked towards him. Clint looked at him, lips parting to speak but you didn't let him, slapping him as hard as you could. Clint stumbled back, fingers brushing over his reddening cheek.
"You had a job. You were supposed to be my dad! You left me to do what? Kill some guys?! I was drowning in my own fucking grief and where were you, Clint?! You missed out on 5 years of my life. Five years you'll never get back. How could you call yourself my dad and then abandon me when shit gets hard? I lost Laura too. I lost Lila, Nathaniel, and Cooper too. Then, I lost you and you left by choice." You stared at him, vision blurry. The tears mixed with the rain.
"Tony fucking Stark was there for me when you weren't. The selfish asshole himself.. Was a better father figure than you were." You breathed out, sniffling.
"(Y/N)-"
"These men dying won't change shit but what we're trying to do might. If not for me, do it for the kids. For a chance of seeing them again." You stared at him. The old feeling of safety you used to get from him had disappeared.
"There's a chance we can get them back. If we do... Things won't go back to normal. You easily abandoned me and I can't forgive that. I'll never forgive that. For three fucking years.. You never bothered getting in contact, never bothered checking in, never bothered being a father. You wouldn't have left if I was Cooper. You wouldn't have left if I was Lila. You proved it." You took in a deep breath.
"I was in pain-"
"And I wasn't?!" You snapped, chest heaving. You noticed you didn't feel the rain anymore, seeing that the rain drops had stopped mid air. You took in a deep breath like Tony had taught you, feeling the rain resume before it eventually eased and stopped completely.
"Are you gonna help the team?" You asked, studying his face. Clint gave a silent nod, gaze flickering back to Natasha. You turned around, opening your palm and feeling the water on your clothes and body move towards your hand. The water mixed together, making a large water bubble. You let it drop to the ground as you walked back towards the jet. You entered, getting in the pilots seat and buckling in. You were incredibly angry but you didn't want to accidentally cause a tsunami so you focused on your breathing. You set the course as Clint and Natasha quietly spoke. You stared at the night sky, watching the clouds pass by. You called Steve, watching the blue screen pop up with his face
"We got Clint, Cap. We're heading back now."
"Copy that." Steve replied, nodding before his gaze shifted onto the two behind you.
"How have you been, Clint?" Steve asked.
"Never better." Clint answered, sighing softly. You frowned, focusing on the clouds as the jet flew back to the facility. Steve and Clint caught up until Steve hung up, leaving the jet in silence.
"Did Bruce have any luck with Thor?" You asked, glancing back at Natasha. Natasha nodded, gently toying with her braid.
"Yeah, he mentioned it was a bit tough to see him. Thor wasn't himself." Natasha stood, approaching the front and placing a hand on the chair. You hummed softly. You felt your phone vibrate, taking it out and seeing Peppers contact. You answered the call.
"Yeah?"
"Morgan wants you to tell her a bed time story. She's sad you didn't have time the other day." Pepper explained in a slightly apologetic tone. You smiled, chuckling softly.
"Yeah, okay."
"(Y/N)?" You heard Morgan's soft voice, immediately feeling relaxed.
"Hey, Momo." You cooed, making sure the jet was on auto pilot before you leaned back in your seat.
"What story do you want today?"
I’ll be there: Bucky Barnes X Reader
A/N: WARNING: Slight mention of PTSD, insecurity, basically Bucky not realising what a blessing to humanity he is.
Screams.
They erupted in an instant as the sound of glass shattering pierced the otherwise peaceful night. Screams were all he’d ever known. Screams sounded like music to his ears. It was just a small snippet of what people really deserved after they dared to show their faces in public, knowing the pain they had caused to this world.
Amidst the endless assassins, stood a certain soldier with eyes as dark as his name, hair long and unkempt about his face, and two arms – one regular, which clutched a gun that seemed to fire itself – and the other, made of vibranium, which was busy throttling a man.
The winter soldier.
That name commanded fear. Fear of being killed, knowing that the monster HYDRA had created didn’t have enough human in him to feel emotions like pity or regret.
Bloodlust.
That was all that James Buchanan Barnes had ever known.
“Please, please not my son!” a woman cried, watching tearfully as the winter soldier fought an urge to scoff.
Not caring in the least, he pointed the gun at a little boy of nearly seven years of age and smirked beneath his mask.
The trigger was pulled, deaf to the cries and bloodcurdling screams of the boy’s mother. A gunshot pierced through the hall filled with screams. A bullet shot towards the tiny, unsuspecting boy, reaching to hit him squarely in the head –
“NOOOOOOOOOOOO!” Bucky screamed, sitting up straight.
He looked around. Nobody was there, he was alone. Like he’d always been.
Panting slightly, he looked around, fumbling for the water jug and he poured himself a glass before taking a sip – his hands shaking so badly that the quantity of spilt water was greater than that he drank.
“Just a nightmare,” he feverishly muttered to himself, “No – no big deal, nightmare.”
His lies sounded so untruthful, even Bucky had to scoff at himself.
Just a nightmare.
If he didn’t understand himself at times, who could?
It was almost foolish to admit it, but Bucky felt something he had no way to overcome. Lonely.
His ‘friends’ were leading important lives, either with family or training at the Avengers compound, wanting to make a difference. Yet, here he sat, feeling useless.
He wanted a purpose in life – a gaping hole in his chest nothing seemed to be able to fill. Apparently, the gods had heard his prayer, for that day was one he treasured most in all of his memories.
-----
“This is the last time I’m working the night shift!” you furiously exclaimed to Leah who just shrugged, saying, “It’s not me who decides the shifts.”
“Meh, well,” you admitted guiltily, “You have a point. But you’re the only I can rant to about this prison.”
“Well, job’s a job, isn’t it?” Leah murmured.
“I guess so.”
The door of the restaurant flew open as somebody walked inside. You didn’t bother to look up, you had way to much experience and hate for this job to care who wanted to eat what.
“Welcome, I am Y/N L/N, just name whatever you want, I’m sure we have it in here and if we don’t, I’m sorry but that’s not my fault and I have been working long hours since weeks and would appreciate a little customer cooperation to ensure the safety of my mental health, okay? What do you want?” you had never talked this way to a customer before – you were known to be a polite employee, but today, you just lost your temper with life.
Receiving silence from the figure that had stopped in front of you, you looked up questioningly and your mind went blank for a second. Standing there was literal eye candy material who looked confused and slightly alarmed. You flushed – great job scaring away a finally nice guy, Y/N.
“Sorry,” you sighed after a while of staring, “Not in the greatest mood these days.”
“I can see that,” the stranger chuckled despite himself, “Rough day?”
“Month,” you corrected moodily, “What can I get you?”
“Meh, the usual, some beer please,” he said.
“Right,” you nodded, turning around, pulling faces at yourself for being so embarrassing. You blindly groped for a bottle and thrust it his way, saying, “Glass?”
“No thanks,” he waved off, uncorking the bottle and downing it, “I’m Bucky, by the way. Bucky Barnes.”
“Hey, I’ve heard of you,” you frowned.
Bucky’s heart dropped into the floors below. Of course you had heard of him. Of the countless, ruthless murders he had performed.
“You’re – that guy, right? Steve Rogers’ best friend?” you asked, “My condolences,” you added quickly.
“Yeah, thanks,” he said, “That’s me.”
“I can see you’ve been through a rough life,” you remarked causally.
“You have no idea.”
And so, Bucky began visiting your bar regularly – a feat that made your shifts more enjoyable and something to look forward to in your mundane life. Bucky understood what a stressful job could be – he felt that if he couldn’t help himself, he’d at least try to help you.
After around a month of knowing him, you decided to do something you had been gathering the balls for for weeks
As soon as you finished your night shift, you spoke, “Can I walk home with you? It’s late – and the night sort of scares me. My house a few blocks away from yours.”
You crossed your fingers and toes behind your back.
“Oh, yeah, sure,” Bucky said, “I wouldn’t want you to walk alone anyway.”
Your heart rose – this was a good sign.
You grabbed your coat and threw it on, shivering slightly as both of you made your way out. You locked the door behind you and placed the keys in your pocket as you resumed walking.
“So,” you began, “How’s life going on for you?”
“Crappy, mostly,” Bucky shrugged, “I mean – there’s nothing to do. I just sit around all day, come to your bar, go home, and sit around again.”
“Sounds like a nice life,” you sighed, “I wish I had some peace. I’d trade with you any day.”
This declaration made him laugh.
Now or never, Y/N, you wimp! Do it! Ask him out!
“Hey, listen, Bucky, I was wondering,” you began as he hummed in response, “Uh... we’ve known each other for some time now... don’t take this the wrong way, but I... really, really like you.”
Bucky felt his heart drop again – this was exactly what he’d been afraid of.
“Y/N...” he began.
“It’s okay, you might not feel the same,” you hurriedly said, swallowing back a few overcoming tears.
“No, Y/N, it’s nothing like that,” Bucky assured you, “I really like you too – but are you sure you’ve thought this through?”
“Thought what – what are you talking about?” you asked, nonplussed.
“I’m just saying – think about it,” Bucky began, “You – you’d be throwing away your future – I don’t want to do that to you. You’re a smart, beautiful woman, and you honestly deserve so much better! I can’t make you happy – I can’t make myself happy, I don’t know anything about commitment. I can’t give you children or a family – and the people who know of my past – almost everyone – will look down on you, I don’t want you to have that burden. I’m – a monster, Y/N, you can’t –”
“Stop,” you whispered, shaking your head, “Stop doing this to yourself. Who on Earth – Bucky, you are not a monster. I would never think like that – and it’s okay if you can’t give me a family – all I want is you. Just you.”
“Yeah, but you’re forgetting the most important part,” Bucky whispered, “I’m dangerous. I can’t trust my own mind. Trigger words, remember? Even if I’m not a killer anymore, I’ve made a lot of enemies – I don’t want anyone to use you to get to me.”
“What if I don’t care?” you asked angrily, “Let them try. And your trigger words – nice try, Bucky, you wanna be more careful what you tell others about your past. I know that that problem was taken care of years ago. You’re jut scared to open up.”
“I get nightmares....” Bucky’s voice trailed off in a feeble attempt to coax you to change your mind.
“And now you’ll have someone to calm you down next to you,” you firmly stated.
Bucky sighed, “Coffee shop down the street, tomorrow, noon.”
“Don’t you dare be late.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it, doll.”
We can take care of each other
Hank x reader x Connor
Warnings: ABO, poly relationship, swearing, police things, Intimate, sexual, harassment, Daddy Hank, anxiety and depression, angst
PART 4
You awoke to your door creaking open. You made a small noise and opened your eyes. You frowned wondering why your door was opened, you were facing away from it so you couldn’t see. Connor was still wrapped around you and holding you tightly.
“Whose there?” You asked sleepily as Hank came into view. You focused on his figure as he knelt down in front of you.
“There’s Panadol in the cupboard somewhere” you mumbled stretching slightly.
“I found it” Hank said. His eyes were downcast. You thought back to last night and sighed.
“You can go if you want, I’ll get dressed and drive you” you sighed trying to move.
“Don’t” Hank said and you frowned but stayed still. Connor hadn’t budged behind you at all, was he asleep?
“I’m here to say sorry” Hank sighed running his hand through his hair.
“I remember last night” he mumbled and you nodded avoiding his eyes.
“You’re not fucked in the head” he muttered.
“I’m the one fucked in the head for getting drunk like that again, I couldn’t-“ he sighed softly.
“Why do you want me?” He asked and you looked to him.
“You and Connor would be great together, he can look after you” Hank didn’t meet your eyes as he spoke. You felt your heart clench as he spoke his feelings.
“I don’t want just him” you mumbled.
“I know it’s selfish, you’re- you’re my alpha” you said flushed.
“I haven’t bonded to anyone like this before I’ve had my rough in’s with alphas and you’re the only one I feel safe with despite all your issues” you spoke softly holding back tears.
“I need Connor and I need you” you hugged your pillow tightly.
“I know I’m young and experienced but I promise I can be good” you whispered.
“You’re already great” Hank whispered.
“But you-“ he cut you off by cupping your cheek.
“Im old and grumpy, I don’t know why you want me, but” he sighed as you looked to him again.
“Ill be yours, both of yours” he said softly. You felt tears roll down your eyes as you shifted slightly wanting to hug him. You got out of Connors hold and sat at the edge of the bed, Hank was on his knees and you held him close. He rested his head against your stomach while holding your waist softly. You felt Connor shift behind you, he sat behind you, one hand on Hanks the other snaking around your middle.
“Didn’t mean to wake you” you said to Connor who shook his head.
“I was already awake” he said.
“You heard everything?” You asked and he nodded.
“Dick head” Hank mumbled and you cracked a smile.
Connor had prepared you both breakfast, you had wrapped yourself up in a soft blanket and sat at the kitchen table waiting. He had made pancakes, you smiled as he sat down.
You ate in silence, Hank was still a little groggy but other wise he had a relaxed smile on his face as he ate.
Your phone rang though and you sighed getting up and answering it.
It was the department, a hostile situation involving the suspect back at the club again.
“We gotta go” you said as Connor and Hank frowned.
As you arrived you went to the closest officer for a briefing.
“She’s got two in the room, she’s armed, yelling and shooting at anyone” you nodded.
“Connor” Hank said.
“On it” Connor said entering the building.
You followed behind, she indeed shot at anything, even shadows, you could hear whimpers and crying also.
“Who are the victims?” You asked softly to the officer beside you.
“Marlene and Tye” you nodded as she handed you a tablet.
“What’s her motive?” You asked as Connor went in more.
“We don’t know” the officer shrugged.
“Three dead now two in danger, does she know them?” You asked and the officer shook her head.
“No connections that we found” you sighed as shots rang out. You watched Connor stumble back and felt your heart leap. You had your gun armed and ready you glanced to Hank worried. He was closer to Connor, behind some cover so he wouldn’t get shot.
“Fucking Android!” You heard her shout and a couple more shots rang out. Connor had ducked to safety thankfully and you held your breath.
“You did this” the suspect yelled.
“You took her away from me!” You frowned at those words.
“Who?” You asked.
“Her former partner” the officer said showing you. A young woman by the name of Lila she was in the army also before she was injured badly by Gen, they couldn’t save her.
“Now you’ll all pay!” She practically roared her words. You thought for a bit going through scenarios before coming up with a dangerous one.
“Gen!” You called as Hank stared at you.
“Whose that?!” The woman snapped.
“My names Y/n!” You called back.
“Show yourself!” She yelled.
“Don’t shoot me” you said slowly standing. Connor and Hank both stared at you, Hank glared trying to get you to stop.
“Can we talk?” You asked.
“Let me see you” she said.
“Don’t shoot” you begged slightly. You slowly walked out hands up, you were shaking as she aimed her gun at you. She didn’t shoot thankfully, she had a rage in her eyes a poor woman in her grasp.
“What’s going on Gen?” You asked carefully.
“Why’re hurting people?” You added.
“You’ve killed three already” you continued and she snarled almost.
“They deserved it” she snapped.
“Why?” You asked.
“Because!” She yelled.
“Because why Gen?” You pressed.
“You don’t know these people, they don’t know you” you stepped closer slowly with your words.
“You’ve killed them, hurt their families” you took another step.
“They took everything from me!” She yelled and you stopped.
“Who? Mason? Fae?” They didn’t know you Gen” you said and she faltered. She’s gone into some kind of raging episode.
“They didn’t know Lila either” she gripped her gun and pointed it at you again.
“That’s who’s it about isn’t it?” You asked.
“Your omega” you said she shifted.
“You hurt your omega in the army, they couldn’t save her” she flinched at your words.
“You can save these people though” you said glancing to the woman.
“She’s done nothing” you said softly, you saw her grip loosen and the woman went free to the man in the corner. She lowered her gun before aiming it again determined.
“What would Lila want?” You questioned and she flinched again.
“What if she saw you here? What would she say?” You pressed hitting the nerve.
“She hated my anger” Gen muttered.
“I- I was unstable” Gen added. Her gun was pointed at the ground now.
“She was scared of me” she whispered. A shot went off and she fell to the floor groaning. Officers flooded in a cuffed her and helped the other two. You took a deep breath in and watched before someone tugged you. You turned to Hank who pulled you close, gripping you tightly. You held him back as Connor came over too.
“You fool” Hank muttered letting you go to Connor. Connor had a gunshot in his arm but he still held you. Hank kept his hand on your shoulder as he sighed.
“You’re wounded” you said gently laying a hand over the gunshot.
“I’ll be fine” Connor said smiling slightly.
“I’ll return to cyberlife tonight to get repaired and-“ Connor stopped and Hank frowned. You knew what he meant but maybe Hank didn’t.
“And?” Hank said.
“Nothing Lieutenant” Connor dismissed and you blinked a few times, why didn’t he want Hank to know?
“I have to leave now” Connor said and you nodded.
“Don’t get yourself shot again” Hank sighed bringing him into a hug. You smiled as Connor nuzzled in a bit, he was slowly learning. You gave him a hug also before he left.
“Since when did he become secretive?” Hank asked frowning.
“I don’t know” you shrugged. You were debating on telling him, but it was possibly a surprise maybe, you didn’t want to ruin it for Connor.
At the interrogation room you watched through the glass. She wasn’t speaking, she just glared at the table. You were twisting in your chair slightly getting annoyed and bored by the silence. Hank sat by you, elbows on the desk as he watched also.
“So now what?” Reed asked behind you both.
“We try again” you said.
“It’s clear she isn’t talking” Reed scoffed.
“And it’s clear you aren’t helping” you bit back. You heard Reed move like he wanted to turn you around and mouth off.
“You do that and ill shoot you” Hank had aimed a gun at Reed. You looked in surprise as did the other officer.
“Get out” Hank said and the man grumbled but left. Hank out his gun away and continued his prisoner watching.
“You say nothing of that” Hank said to the officer who nodded slightly scared.
“I’m gonna go in” you said standing up with a sigh. Hank grabbed your wrist though an unsure look on his face. You gave him a small smile and nodded. He sighed letting you go, you walked out and in to the interrogation room. Your nose scrunched up at the horrid scent she was giving off.
“Hi Gen” you said as you sat down. She looked up for once, you froze a bit as she stared you down.
“You remember me?” You asked and she nodded.
“Y/n” she muttered and you nodded.
“Yep” you confirmed opening her file.
“Gen, you have no connections with these people” you said showing her pictures of her victims.
“Did you know them outside of the club?” You asked and she shook her head.
“Did they say something?” You tilted your head slightly, but she shook her head again.
“Do something?” You added and she still shook her head.
“What was the reason Gen? I need a confession” you sighed leaning against the table.
“You smell like an alpha and an android” she said making a disgusted face.
“I was in the room with them” you said confused.
“They’re my partners, we work together here” you added.
“You shot the android, his name is Connor” you tried making conversation.
“Felt good” she hummed and you clenched your jaw. You glared slightly before controlling yourself. She was looking at you when you looked back up, her eyes trailing over your top half.
“You’re not taken” she said and you frowned.
“Taken?” You asked.
“Claimed” you blinked at her words a light flush on your cheeks.
“No” you said.
“Omegas are supposed to be submissive, do what we alphas want” she taunted.
“I do what I want” you fought back calmly.
“You’re going off trail” you said going through her file again.
“When I had Lila she never listened to me” you stopped your movements at her words.
“Made me so angry that she thought she could do what she liked” she stared off and your jaw clenched.
“So I punished her” you froze.
“Like I did those other two” you glanced to the mirror body trembling slightly.
“They didn’t listen” her voice was dark as she spoke and your stomach twisted.
“So I killed them” she confessed. You only nodded and closed the file on the table.
You didn’t say anything as you left the room quickly. You shuddered slightly her voice, her aura was so dark and terrifying.
“You ok?” Hank had come out also and stood by you.
“Yeah, she just” you shuddered shaking your head.
“Yep” he sighed.
“Come on” he muttered as you headed back to your desks.
After filling out the required paperwork you both headed out, you were tired and done for the night.
You dropped Hank off, pulling into his driveway and parking.
“You gonna be ok?” You asked worried.
“You gonna believe me if I said yes?” He looked smirking to you and you shook your head.
“Exactly” he said getting out.
“Y/n” you frowned as he leant down and called you.
“That meant come in” he cocked his head to the door. You flushed muttering an oh as you fumbled with your keys and seatbelt. You heard him chuckle as you finally got out and locked your car.
You followed him inside, Sumo bounding over quickly.
“Hi!” you said giving him lots of pets. He soaked up the attention before going to lie down again. Hank sighed as he went to the kitchen.
“You want something to drink?” he asked and you gave him a frown.
“Juice? A soda?” he questioned and you kept your frown on.
“Water?” he said confused.
“A juice please,” you said and he nodded.
He got out some juice and poured you both a glass. You leant against the counter and took a sip. Thank drank it in one go sighing afterwards.
You took your time looking at his messy table.
“I’m sorry” he said and you frowned.
“What for?” You asked putting your drink on the counter.
“Yesterday” he muttered.
“You already apologised” you said.
“Yeah, just” he sighed.
“I don’t know what to do either, I’m new to all this” you shrugged.
“Doesn’t give me an excuse to go drink and be an asshole” he sighed.
“Well no, but-“ you struggled with words.
“Look we all get overwhelmed sometimes” you said and he scoffed softly nodding.
“Can say that again” he muttered. He leant against the counter too, arms crossed over his chest as he looked to the floor. You moved and he frowned eyes meeting yours as you stood in front of him. Your legs had moved on their own as you looked to him. He kept your gaze and you flushed as he smirked and leant down. You met him and leant up to press your lips to his a little to eagerly. You wrapped your arms around his neck and pressed yourself against him. He made a small noise of satisfaction in your mouth before turning you around. He lifted you into the counter and stood between your legs. He kept kissing you eagerly hands on your thighs.
You had to pull back for air, he panted also as you leant your forehead against his. He sighed kissing you again and you smiled. He deepened the kiss hands clenching your flesh. You made a small noise and he urged more. He pulled back though slowly a curse leaving his lips.
“When the fuck is he getting out of that damn factory” Hank said and you laughed.
“He said tomorrow” you said hands hanging around his neck.
“He’s an asshole” Hank muttered kissing you again.
“He got shot” you said between kisses.
“That makes him more of an asshole” Hank said and you laughed shaking your head.
“You love him” you chuckled and he smiled nodding. You let out a yawn and sighed afterwards.
“Come on” Hank said gently tugging you off the counter.
“Bed time for you” he smirked leading you to his bedroom.
“And you” you fought as he turned his light on. You kicked your shoes off along with your socks and kept them I’m by the door, you laid your phone on his side table.
“I gotta use the bathroom real quick” you said and Hank hummed.
After you used the bathroom you came back to a semi naked Hank. His shirt was off and he wore plain black pants. You stared at his back as he fiddled with something on his shirt. You were surprised by his muscles, though they were only just defined. He had a few scars too, probably from work. You walked up to him and gently ran a finger over one. He tensed before relaxing again as you gently traced his back. He turned around slowly and you met his eyes. You looked down his chest he was wide in the shoulders, defined chest and stomach, he was built big. You laid a hand on his chest just over his head. You gently ran your hand through the hairs a small smile on your face at the feeling. You could feel his heart pounding in his chest and you finally looked back up to him. You smiled softly and left him there to go lie down. You smirked as he stood frozen for a while before also going to the bed and lying down.
“Night Hank” you said softly as the lights went out.
“Goodnight” he said after some time. You rolled over an sighed tugging the blanket closer. You felt him shuffle behind you before you finally felt him press against you. You smiled shuffling back slightly and held his hand as it slid across your stomach. You felt his breath hit the back of your neck, his nose gently resting on the back of your head.
You fell asleep safe and comfortable, a smile on your face.
ransom doesn’t remember the last time he was this dumbfounded.
his hands graze over the grainy picture of a andy barber who looks just like him.
down to the very mole on his left cheek, every feature seems to fit perfectly with his.
“we believe, these are all alternate versions of you,”sam glances at ransom, biting into a stale piece of bread, “steve, to be more precise.”
“so what? I’m a clone?” he huffs, cringing at his own words.
yoi look up from your plate and realise he’s looking at you for an answer.
“we don’t know but we do know they’re not from this timeline.” you pick at the canned beans with your fork.
you never really had an appetite on days like these.
“who? them?” he raises the stack of papers.
you nod, placing your fork down.
“thet all popped out of nowhere when everyone else came back after the blip. no one’s heard of them before.” bucky explains, picking up your fork and handing it back to you.
you grimace, glancing at the goopy mess on your plate.
“and what do you mean, timeline?” ransom questions, observing you and bucky.
you guys were close, that was evident enough from the way he’s been trying to get you to eat something.
but just how close were y-
“we don’t know.” sam gruffs, his throat parched from the dry, flaky bread.
ransom rolls his eyes, “what do you know?”
“that the only way you’re not going to end up like them is by staying with us.” bucky gestures towards the papers with his fork.
ransom slouches back in his chair, horrified at the thought of being in this dump for any longer.
he had to sleep on the couch, if you could call it one, last night and he’s pretty sure he saw some rats scurry by while washing his face earlier today.
and did he mention the clothes? he’s in a horribly mismatched shirt and sweatpants that feels like gravel on his skin.
his stomach growls but he’d rather starve than eat that soupy thing infront of him.
“it’s only for a few days, weeks at most. because of the blip, hydra’s suffered, they’re outresourced. the problem is, we are too.” you offer a sympathetic smile.
you kind of felt bad for him.
he sighs, “can we go shopping or something for clothes and food. actual edible food?”
“what can you get with,” sam dramatically digs into his pockets, pulling out a single bill, “five bucks?”
of course, he’d be stranded with three strangers, only five bucks to their names.
“aren’t the avengers supposed to be loaded?” ransom asks in disbelief.
“not everyone has a wealthy grandpa.”
-
“hey, what’s up?” sam walks in, a little too breezily.
you narrow your eyes as he awkwardly shifts around, looking for a place to sit.
the floor is covered with files and documents, you’d been rummaging around, searching for other safehouses set up by shield years ago.
“let me guess, you want to ask me how I’m doing?” you sigh, flipping over another file report from years ago.
he has a sheepish smile on his face as he picks up a file and starts flipping through.
“we’ve been at this for months now and this is the first time we’ve ever met one of them.” he trails off, hesitantly.
“and?”
he looks at you, raising his eyebrows.
you can’t bring yourself to meet his eyes cause you hate to see the pity in them. hate that he knows you’re still hurting.
“just let us know if it gets too much.” he says, softly.
the stupid lump forms in your throat again and you busy yourself, picking up another file.
you flip to the first page, instantly recognising the familiar scrawlings.
cause you were used to seeing those on little notes Steve used to leave you.
you vaguely remember this mission, it was a grueling week of staying undercover as the new siblings in town until shield gave a green light on pursuing the subjects.
you’d never laughed so hard than when your new neighbour had caught you two making out, revolted by the act of incest she thought she’d just witnessed.
a gunshot outside alerts you, breaking your thoughts.
“relax, bucky’s teaching him how to use a gun.” sam chuckles, eyes still trained on the file.
“a gun? why?”
“precautionary measures.”
you furrow your brows, “for what?”
he shuts the file, giving you a look.
you realise why.
“no, he’s not coming with us. are you crazy?” you end up yelling.
joaquin had tipped you guys off about a run-down, abandoned hydra base that would hopefully answer some questions.
and there was no way you were letting them bring Ransom there.
“listen, if we leave him here, there’s no saying what might happen so we don’t have a choice.” he sighs, trying to reason.
“well, one of us can stay here, babysit him.”
he scoffs, “really? who?”
you hate to admit it but he was right.
ransom couldn’t stay here alone and no one would agree to staying behind to miss out on the action.
“well, I’ll go help.” you grit your teeth, storming out of the room.
a second shot goes off as you push the front door, greeted by the bright rays of the sun.
bucky’s passing the gun onto ransom who looks hesitant.
you know he’s never held one by the way his hand grips around it, a little too tight.
he aims at a can placed infront shakily, his posture awkwardly stiff.
you can’t help but walk over, holding out your hand.
he hands you the gun, muzzled pointed right at his legs.
you swiftly grab it, “first thing, don’t point this thing anywhere unless you want to shoot.”
bucky cocks his head in amuse.
you always flunked on training the new recruits back in shield and yet here you were, voluntarily helping ransom.
“your right hand, grip this here,” you guide ransom’s hand along the back strap, “your left hand, under it. Support it.”
he looks over at you, seemingly for approval.
and suddenly, you can’t breathe.
the familiarity of this catching you offguard yet again.
but it had been you in ransom’s place and steve in yours.
“it’s gonna be pretty loud.” you clear your throat, fixing his stance slightly.
a hesitant pull of the trigger, completely missing the can.
he scratches his head, adorning a sheepish smile which shouldn’t feel as endearing.
“wow, you’re really bad at this.” bucky exhales, earning a side eye from you.
“can’t I just hold a pepper spray or something?”
-
your eyes fall on the bag of transceivers, that you guys’d been heavily relying on these past couple of months.
however, beyond a minute they’d track you instantly. so every call made was timed under a minute.
“you know, you can call your family if you want.” you mumble, loading the car with boxes of tech sam needs lying around or else he swears red wing will “go hungry”.
he’s sitting in the passenger seat, legs out on the ground, hands in his pockets.
you bite back a passive agressive remark about how he could be helping you right now.
“no, that’s fine.” he mutters, an unreadable expression on his face.
based on the information you’d dug up on him, you knew their family wasn’t exactly close.
but if their son was being hunted down by crazed psychos hell bent on bringing chaos to the world, they surely had the right to know.
“our phones are untraceable, it’s safe if you keep it under a minute.” you reach out to grab one.
“s’okay, they won’t care.” he gruffs, shrugging his shoulders.
you breathe out an “oh”, internally smacking yourself for insisting.
an awkward silence follows as you resume loading the last box, shutting the trunk.
“who’s ready for a roadtrip?” sam gleams, palms raised.
you wrinkle your nose at the familiar smell of kerosene.
“do you guys have to do this everytime?” you roll your eyes, backing away from the scent.
ransom’s about to ask what when the house explodes up in flames right in front of him.
“what the fuck?” he jumps out of his seat, frantic eyes racing around.
but the fire stops as soon as it began, leaving a scorched framework of bricks and rubble behind.
“can’t find anything if you have nowhere to search.” bucky rattles an empty jar labelled corrosive.
san fist bumps him, smirking.
ransom’s starting to think you might be the sanest out of the three.
and that was saying a lot.
Jay is from the show Red Widow and unfortunately he's not really known 😅 At first I wanted to ask for Jack but I had no idea of the details for the story... Maybe he had to leave reader because of his job, but he loves her too much and decides to come back and find out that she is pregnant (a baby girl) I know, it's not original but i can't imagine anything else for this charming cowboy 🥺
Whole (Jack Daniels x Fem!reader)
Notes: Idk why I struggled so hard to write this fic but here she is in all her glory........yay. Not as smutty as per usual to prove I’m not a total whore but here ya go
Summary: after your life is threatened unbeknownst to you, whiskey takes it upon himself to protect you the only way he thinks he can––by leaving you. but what his cowboy brain doesn’t for see, is that he’s doing both of you more damage than good especially after a happy little accident.
warnings: brief description of smut and aftercare (like the La Croix of smut but still no minors), ANGSTTTTTTT, rOUGH, unplanned pregnancy, a slap, and a happy ending
Jack should have known the first time he wasn’t meant to have this kind of happiness—the kind where one could always have someone to return home to at the end of the day. No, he couldn’t have it with his late wife and he couldn’t have it with you either.
The human trafficker had somehow gotten access to personal statesmen information, because he had found out about you. Had your name. Had shown him pictures of you. Had shown that men were waiting at your doorstep if Jack didn’t back down now.
Thankfully, they were able to stop the man before it came to any of that—but it broke something in Jack. He couldn’t have another woman he loves die like his wife. He didn’t know if he could handle it. You didn’t even know about Jack’s real job, all you knew was that he was the CEO of a distillery and you never asked questions about that. Maybe it was easier keeping it like that, as Jack realized the only way to keep you safe was to leave you.
He had picked a night, picked a place to head out to after it was all over, and planned out the note. He had made love to you one last time before leaving—slowly savoring the way your skin felt pressed against him and the way it felt to have your walls drag against him when he thrusted, and finally stilled deep inside you. He made sure to take care of you before he left, clean with all sore muscles rubbed out and well hydrated—comfortable as you could be. You fell asleep so easily it somehow made Jack more guilty for what he thought was the right thing. He stayed longer than he should have after he wrote the note and got dressed, bag packed by the door, just staring at you, attempting to memorize the sound of your soft noises as you slept and the way your naked body looked covered by the sheets and pale moonlight. It was the most beautiful scene he had ever seen and wanted it to be the clearest memory he had of you. Tears sprung in his eyes, thinking that this is the only thing he will ever have of love—memories. He kissed your forehead one last time before walking out of your life forever.
*****************************
Jack hasn’t felt alive since, the toll of leaving you behind eating at him more than he ever thought it could. He’s changed in a way and everyone knows it—they see the way he moves or speaks now and know something has changed. He just goes through the motions of living with no actual life in his eyes to prove he is alive. He throws himself into his work working through cases and bad guys more efficiently than ever, but it doesn’t distract him from losing you—not when he lies awake at night crying and missing you.
Everyone around him changes too—Tequila doesn’t tease him anymore and walks around him like they’re threading through a room full of broken glass. Ginger does more medical evaluations—ones that are less to do with physical health and more to do with mental health. Most of all—champ acts different, “son—“
Jack pauses from exiting the debriefing room after giving Champ a status report and picking up another case, “I’m wondering if you should take a few days off from wo—“
“No,” Jack says curt and without a single space for bargaining. Champ is stiff when Jack looks at him, “I know you're wallowing over that girl.”
“I did what I had to do and I’m going to continue doing it.” Jack reminds him, staying steadfast in his decision. Champ shakes his head, “and it’s tearing you apart—statesmen get threats like that all the time Whiskey and they don’t go deserting their relatives or loved ones—“
“Well they're not me,” Jack states his stare is cold as he looks down at Champagne, “I can’t lose another person like that again.”
“You’ve lost her by leaving her,” his words cut through him and he knows it’s the truth, but it’s not something stubborn ol Jack is willing to withstand. Jack turns to leave again, “I’ll be off on the case.”
*****************************
You can’t help but pick up one of the sandwiches from the various food carts before they go out. It’s too tempting after standing for hours on your feet with a six month old pregnancy belly on your front—one you’re rubbing as you enjoy the taste of the mozzarella, pesto, and tomato together. The father of your child disappeared before you could even tell him—fitting considering you never grew up with a father in your house. So it has just been you and your baby girl, and well your best friend and business partner that was walking towards you now, joking “are the sandwiches up to your standards?”
“I needed something to eat after four hours of standing and being pregnant Travis,” you contest, taking another big bite. He shrugs with some sort of understanding, looking over the trays of food with you and approving them before they go off. Travis randomly starts, “I don’t think we should try to have this client again.”
You turn, finishing your sandwich with an eyebrow raise, “why? Did someone from the company say something to you—“
“Not that—although I was worried when the CEO invited his childhood priest—” he notes sending off the last tray, “I get bad vibes from the company itself.”
You think about it for a moment agreeing that something was fishy about the way a family-owned soap company was able to afford such a lavish event—something was a little off. You nod, “maybe not—I don’t want to get too close to a company that's a front. I doubt they would want us back because they’ve fired every event planner they’ve had before and the CEO’s wife already complained that the flower garnishes weren’t the correct shade of maroon.”
“We just have to finish the job then and we’ll be scott free” Travis mutters checking his watch, “just a couple hours left—what could go wrong?”
As though you were in a badly made comedy, right as Travis says that you hear clatter and gunshots come from the main event area, “......I spoke too soon didn’t I?”
*********************
Vincent Marsulio had tried to make a run for it once he realized his plans to run a million dollar drug business had gone to shit—I mean a soap company as a front? Really? Jack had dodged gunfire, tequila and the new agent rum covering him—allowing him to use his lasso to drag Vincent into Statesmen custody.
The scene was under control now—with agents and Ginger’s crime scene investigators gathering follow up information and evidence. Jack was just there to make sure the scene stayed secure and that no witnesses ran off that were revealed to be involved. Scanning the crowds of those being interviewed is when he saw you.
He should have known you were here—he should have seen your touches in the flower displays, the food selections, the drapery, and the table cloths. You were a party planner, he should have made note of that. You’re the same as the images in his mind—the memories that flash through his mind whenever he gets a flicker of your perfume or hears a laugh that sounds like yours. The only thing that's changed about you is your stomach—there's a sizable baby bump there, and he mumbles to himself “no…”
It had been seven months—seven months since he left you. It had to be his. He left you pregnant. As though you heard the gears turning in his head you turn and make eye contact with him—freezing in your place. He has to talk to you now, but you make efforts to move away, running towards a stairwell to get away from him as he shouts your name.
************
Despite being seven months pregnant you make a good chase, ducking down the stairwell and moving as fast as your swollen ankles will carry you while he shouts for you behind you. You can’t see him right now, he left, he doesn’t deserve this. Your condition must somewhat get the best of you as you end up stumbling on a landing—slowing down enough for him to catch up. You knew it was futile after all he ran faster than you even when you weren’t pregnant.
He grabs your wrist before you can go any farther, pulling you towards his body—only for you to wack a big slap to the side of his face, “how dare you—you asshole.”
“You're pregnant?” He asks quick as hell, and you frown still jabbing hits at him, “Why else am I so fucking big dickhead.”
He pulls you closer in an effort to restrain you from hitting him and from running away at any point, “is it mine?”
You had been avoiding looking at his face the entire portion of the ordeal—not wanting to see the face of the man that abandoned you. But you end up looking anyway and feel the tears spring up in your eyes. Despite the fact he left you you still feel love for him in your heart. You can’t lie to him, “it is.”
“Sugar, I’m—“ he breathes out, struck in the moment by every error he’s made in the past few months knowing he should have stayed, “I’m so sorry, please let me explain why I did what I did.”
You don’t respond just letting him speak at his own will as he settles you two down to sit on the steps of the stair. Jack tells you about his job, his wife, and the scare he had that just accumulated to him feeling like he had to leave to keep you safe. You had known about his late wife but none of the details about the affair and understood just why he was so afraid—but he still acted like an idiot. Head in hands, “why did you keep everything hidden from me Jack, I mean you lied to me about your job––no wonder I was able to find you after I found out, I was stuck looking for Jack Daniels brewery CEO instead of Jack Daniels statesmen.”
You got him there, “I should have––everyone told me I should have told you.” Silence emanates between the two of you, “I know sorry doesn’t make up for all I did––I don’t know if I can ever make up for what I did, but give me a chance because I want to be there for you and the kid–I love you sweet pea.”
Tears spring from your eyes, “I love you too Jack, we’ll figure it out I promise.”
Jack pulls you into his arms whispering what sounds like a thousand thank you’s for you and the girl in your belly, “it’s a girl you know.”
“A girl…” Jack trails off with a smile gleaming on his face and some unspoken joy in his eyes, that shifts into something of deep regret, “I was almost like him I don’t ever wanna be like him”
“You won’t.” you state firm and jack pulls away to cup your face and wipe away the errant tears still streaming down your face, “can I kiss you darling?”
“Please,” and with that the lips you have missed meld on to yours. After months, both alone and apart, both you and Jack feel a sense of security that everything will be alright––that your little family is finally whole.
Temporary Home: Chapter 4
Guardians of the Galaxy fanfic | Reader x Guardians (With Yondu and Kraglin!)
Summary: Things just seem to keep getting tense around here... Will Reader ever catch a break? Will Yondu ever solve the mystery?
Previous Chapter here | Next Chapter Here Or click here to: Start From Beginning
Author’s Note: This chapter is a LONG BOI. I considered splitting it, but then one chapter would have been 2k+ words and the other would have been 5k+, and for some reason I thought people wouldn't like the inconsistency lol (Feel free to weigh in. I know a few of you have said you liked longer chapters, and I haven't gotten any nay-sayers, but still thought I might as well ask lol)
And thank you to the anons and @condy-wants-a-cookie for your bad roommate suggestions! I wasn't able to add them all in, but they were all appreciated nonetheless!
Word Count: 7,321
This morning you did sleep in, but that didn't make your day much better.
You were slightly hungover, to start, and you spent most of the day in a funk trying to avoid everyone.
This wasn't completely possible, seeing as you now lived with eight other people, but the others seemed to mostly get the hint that you wanted to be left alone.
The first real interaction you had was around noon as you poured yourself some cereal and Yondu and Peter came in the backdoor to tell you they just heard gunshots from the forest.
You barely glanced at them. "Hunters." you said. "Probably hunting pigeons, but more likely they're poaching deer or fox. Happens every year."
They seemed almost surprised by your blasé attitude at hearing there were gunshots, but did seem to relax a bit that you seemed so confident. You had said you grew up here, after all.
Peter was still a little nervous however. "Do they ever come this way?"
You look up to him, knowing what he was getting at. He wanted to make sure they wouldn't happen upon your house while anyone obviously not human was outside and put them all at risk. "No. I'm pretty sure it's just a man and his boys who live a couple miles away. I've never heard the shots come closer than a mile outside the property. You're fine."
Seemingly convinced they finally left you, but you did notice no one seemed to go out until well after the last of the shots were heard, and you assumed Peter must have warned the others to stay inside just in case.
After you ate you went upstairs to grab your music, fancying a walk. However, once you got there you caught Groot sticking his tendrils in the lock of the attic door.
"What you doing there?" you say, firm enough to get his attention, but gentle enough to hopefully not to scare him.
He turned to you, pulling back his vines, looking sorry. "I am Groot."
You shook your head. "Sorry buddy, I have no idea what you're saying, let's find someone who can translate." You beckoned him to come, holding out your hand.
Groot looked sheepish, like he wasn't sure he wanted to come, but eventually he did, toddling over to you and allowing himself to be picked up.
You carried him downstairs and into the sitting room, finding everyone but Mantis, Kraglin, and Rocket sitting at the table. You walked over and asked if anyone there could translate, sitting Groot on the table.
"Sure," Peter offered, "What's up?"
"Well, I found him growing his vines into the lock of the attic door and I just want to know what he was doing." Actually, you thought you knew what he was doing. It looked like he was trying to pick the lock, what you really wanted to know was why.
Gamora looked at the tree child with both confusion and intrigue. "Groot, why did you do that?"
"I am Groot."
"No buddy, she's not going to do that. She just wants to know what you were doing to her door." Peter answered.
You raised an eyebrow.
"Sorry, I forgot we have to repeat the question for him. He doesn't know what you're saying. He was worried that you were going to be mad at him like you were to Rocket last night."
You were taken aback by this. "He can't unde-? But the first night you all got here-? I asked him a question and Drax translated his answer for me?"
Drax shrugged. "It was easier to make something up than explain he won't be able to understand you because neither of you have translators. What he had really told you was that he had no idea what you said."
Yondu and Peter looked at Drax like he was stupid. It wouldn't have taken much more effort to explain. He literally just did it.
You also look at Drax. "So this whole time he hasn't been able to understand a word I've said to him?" A realization hit you. "But wait- I'm pretty sure we-" you pointed a finger back and forth between you and them, "are speaking the same language??" You were wondering if they were trying to prank you.
Gamora looked at you apologetically. She would have corrected Drax when he made up an answer for Groot that first night, but she was too exhausted to deal with it, and afterwards it just never came up again. You had spent more and more time avoiding everyone anyway. "We're actually not speaking the same language. We all have translator chips, it's how we can all understand each other. It's standard where we're from. They work both ways. It's how you can understand us and how we can understand you. However, because neither you or Groot has one, he can't understand you." She didn't go into the fact that their translators didn't actually translate Groot, or how their understanding of him only came from time spent with him and Rocket's translations. She doubted they'd be there much longer for it to make a difference anyway.
"I see," you said. You frown. "I guess that explains why he never seemed to listen."
Peter lightly chuckled at that, as did Yondu.
"Anyway," Peter said, trying to bring the conversation back to what you came for. "What were you doing to her door?"
"I am Groot."
"He said he was trying to unlock it."
"Alright, kinda figured that, but why?"
Peter repeated the question to Groot and came back with the answer, "He said he was looking for a hiding spot?"
You raise an eyebrow.
"I am Groot."
"Oh that's right, you were playing hide and seek."
"Hmm. Well that's all fine, but the attic is off limits. It's locked for a reason." you say.
"She says you can't go in there, buddy. There are monsters in there."
You give him a strange look, but he gives his head a quick shake as if to tell you not to question it. You figured he probably thought the kid would be more likely to listen if he thought there were monsters and let it go.
Groots eyes went wide and he turned to you. "I am Groot?"
Yondu answered, fighting back a grin. "Yeah, really. Now run along before we feed you to them."
Peter smacked him in the arm as little Groot hopped off the table, and Yondu laughed and held up his hands in a "What?" gesture.
Almost on cue you then heard Kraglin call out, "Ready or not, here I come!" before walking into the sitting room and encountering Groot as he ran towards the door. He looked at Groot and laughed, "I don't think you know how this game works, buddy," before turning and leaving the room himself.
You also started to leave when Drax asked, "Why is the attic off-limits?"
Gamora shot him a look for being nosy but you answered anyway. "It's.. unsafe," you lie. "Old house, you know. Don't want anyone falling through the floor."
You leave them then, saying you're going out for a walk.
Your walk wasn't too long, just along the road a ways before turning back. When you got back to the house you decided to practice your archery some more. You may or may not have pretended that a certain someone's face was the target.
When you finally did come back inside you arrived to a commotion in the hall.
You didn't know what the fight was about. You didn't ask either. All you saw was Kraglin and Rocket standing in the hall arguing about some nonsense. Drax was also there, but he was sitting down on the bench tying his boots and seemed uninterested in the argument.
Then you saw Rocket go to bite Kraglin, miss, and then settle for lunging on him and Kraglin struggling to get him off. Drax didn't really do anything other than scold Rocket, and you suspected this must be so normal for him to witness that it just didn't register anymore.
Your nostrils flared and your eyes narrowed at the scene.
Rocket attacking and Kraglin flailing.
Peter came out of the sitting room, presumably to tell them to knock it off, then he saw the murderous look in your eyes and his sentence caught in his throat as he watched you storm over.
You grabbed Rocket by the scruff of the neck and roughly pulled him off, both to his and Kraglin's surprise. Rocket actually made a noise akin to a squeak.
The others watched as you wordlessly marched the fecker to the front door, earning many angry protests from the Raccoon on the way for you to let him go as he kicked and squirmed.
Hearing the sudden change in the commotion, this prompted Gamora and Yondu to join Peter in the doorway. Yondu, out of curiosity, and Gamora out of concern.
You jerked the door open, and told Rocket to take a walk before tossing him out like a rag doll, mercifully onto the grass. He landed and stared back in a mix of shock and anger, too stunned to think of running back towards you. "You can come back in when you stop wanting to being such a damn asshole." you told him, promptly shutting the door and spinning the deadbolt.
You didn't look at the others as you turned on your heels and made your way up the stairs to your room.
They stared at each other in the hallway, wondering if they had really just witnessed what they saw, and if they should do anything about it.
On one hand, you just literally threw their friend outside.
On the other, maybe it would cool him down to go for a walk?
In the end they decided not to intervene, see how it played out. Way they saw it there were two possible outcomes. One outcome, Rocket takes his time out and actually comes back calmer and ready to be civil. The other outcome, he spends his time out getting more pissed and then rips your face off when you finally let him back in.
The real outcome, however, was less conclusive.
You decided rather than waste the pasta one of the others bothered to save from the previous night, you'd re-make the sauce and heat the spaghetti and serve it for dinner that night.
You called the others to the kitchen and told them to serve themselves before leaving the kitchen. Fortunately there were no accusations of poison this time, but that could have been because Yondu saw which door of the kitchen you exited from and figured you were going to call Rocket back inside.
He was right.
You open the front door and call out into the open, "Hey, Rocket! If you've decided you want to play nice then come inside and eat!" You resisted the urge to call him 'shit-head' instead of his name. More flies with honey and all that.
You waited a bit and then saw Rocket turning the corner of the house to approach the front door. He didn't say anything, just grouchily shuffled inside and you followed in behind him. You didn't say anything either, trying not to antagonize too much.
When you saw everyone else was served you made a plate and took your dinner in your room. No one questioned. At the urging of Gamora they were still trying to give you your space.
They only hoped things would be less tense tomorrow.
***
The next time you were seen wasn't until a little before midnight, when Yondu happened to glance out the window as he was tucking into bed and saw your shadowy figure walking towards the forest in the moonlight.
He frowned. Once was odd. Twice only made him that much more curious. What was nearly the tipping point of his curiosity was the fact that he realized he would never hear you leaving the old house, which to him implied you were sneaking out. Sneaking out of your own house. The hell?
What the hell was out there that you kept disappearing to at night? Where you disappeared to when Rocket ruined dinner?
Next time he was going to stay up and catch you before you left.
***
Starting out things were indeed NOT less tense the next day.
Your day started out with Kraglin accidentally walking in on you when you had just gotten out of the shower. Fortunately for both of you you had literally just wrapped the towel around yourself before he opened the door, but that didn't make anything less awkward, or either of your startled screams less shrill.
He tried to apologize later, but you'd only responded with "Let's just never speak of it again."
Then you went to grab some breakfast, you thought toast would be nice. Only when you got into the kitchen the toaster was nowhere to be found. Maybe you put it in a cupboard? You opened the press where you might have put it, only to find your cooking pans instead.
That wasn't the particular cupboard where you kept your pans, however, and you began to have a sinking feeling as to what might have happened.
You opened another cupboard and finally found the toaster alongside the blender- again, not where they were supposed to be. You then went to find a knife, and wouldn't you know it, all your silverware was gone and replaced with towels.
You pinched the bridge of your nose.
"Do you like it?"
You turned to see Mantis and Drax beaming like they did a good deed. "What?"
"We re-arranged the kitchen." Drax said. "Rocket said it was a Terran custom and you'd be very happy."
You rub a hand down your face. Fecker pulled another prank. "And you believed Rocket why, exactly?"
Drax and Mantis shared a look, as if they just realized it wasn't a smart idea to believe Rocket. They only grimaced apologetically back at you with an "Um..."
After a moment Mantis asked if you were mad.
You look at them for a bit before saying, "No. I'm not mad. I'm not happy about it, but I'm not mad. But, you two are going to help me put everything back."
They nodded quietly and got to work. It took an hour to get it straight again.
After you finally got to eat you decided to tend your garden again. It didn't need much weeding, so you decided to work slow to avoid going back inside for a bit. Mantis had also come outside with you and went over to play on the swing. She had seemingly become quite fond of it in her short time here.
After perhaps ten minutes you heard a snap and a startled cry and turned to find Mantis now on the ground. The old rope had finally snapped.
Mantis looked up at you and sheepishly said, "Sorry, I broke your swing."
You look at her in exhaustion. "It's fine. Not your fault, it was old. You ok?"
Mantis nodded and headed back inside as she rubbed her smarted behind.
You turn back to your garden. Today might be another archery day.
Instead of archery you thought of another idea. Rocket had complained about sleeping in the crib at least five times since he got here, probably more when you weren't around to hear it. Maybe you could build him a little bed as a peace-offering. Maybe he'd be less insufferable if you fixed the problem he was always complaining about.
You already knew you had enough wood in the shed to do it, and you already knew the crib fit a 120 X 60 cm mattress, so you'd just build the bed to the same dimensions as the crib so the mattress would still fit- you weren't going to go to that much trouble for the shithead. And as a bonus, this was also another way to keep busy.
You sketched out a quick plan on an old notepad you kept in the work shed and got to work cutting the pieces.
It was a simple design, but one that still required the bed legs and headboard to be joined and clamped together, same as the footboard. This meant you wouldn't be finished by tonight, especially not if you decided to stain it, which was fine by you. You weren't exactly in a rush.
You did what you were able to of the bed frame before heading back inside, maybe a little more than an hour later to grab something quick for lunch. Rocket was already in the kitchen eating something out of a little packet that looked unfamiliar to you. More alien food, you thought.
He looked up at you as you walked in with a raised eyebrow. "What you been up to?"
You looked down to where his gaze met and saw you still had a bit of sawdust on your jeans. You brushed it away and said, "Nothing."
He eyed you before his expression changed to a grin. He thought he'd have a little fun with you, slight revenge for the previous day when you threw him outside. Nothing much, just something to take "Miss Cranky-Ass" down a peg. He looked at you innocently. "Hey, you want to try one of these? They're good."
You eye him suspiciously. Every instinct you had told you not to trust him.
Rocket could tell you weren't biting. "Look, I know things have been tense between is, but consider it a peace offering." He held out the bag and kept grinning.
Not a chance.
Peter walked into the kitchen at that moment, just the person you needed to see. You got his attention, "Hey, Peter, what's this little fecker trying to do to me?"
Peter looked confused. "What?" he asked.
"He's offering me whatever those purple things are, and I think you could forgive me for not trusting it right away."
Rocket made a show of looking offended, "I'd never-"
Then Peter got a look at the bag and shot Rocket an annoyed look. "Yeah, do not eat that." he warned. He looked at Rocket. "You know Terrans can't eat xanti-berries." He looked back at you, "Seriously, don't eat them. You'll be shitting yourself the rest of tonight and tomorrow."
Your eyes widened and you looked at Rocket bitterly. Your instincts had been right. Can't trust the little shit. And to think you were making him a bed so he didn't need to sleep in the crib.
Rocket was now snickering, saying to Peter, "Come on- I mean we know that's what happens to you-" More snickering. "But maybe it's just a you thing-" Snickering now turns to laughing. "Maybe- Maybe she'd be fine. AHAHA!"
The little beast was now fully laughing at his own joke.
"Yeah, no thanks," you say, turning to grab a granola bar instead.
Peter shooed still laughing Rocket out of the kitchen. "I'm sorry about him, he's-"
"An asshole?" you finish for him.
Peter rubbed the back of his head, "Yeah..." he said with an apologetic look. He could tell you were past tired of his friend's bullshit, which was bad because they hadn't even been there a full week yet.
You shook your head and went to eat in your room, maybe you'd scroll some tumblr.
***
Not much later after you had gotten bored refreshing the page, you thought you'd look for a book to read in the sitting room, and walked in on Rocket and Peter arguing over what to watch. This eventually lead to the remote being flung across the room and just narrowly missing the TV.
You rub your temples and sigh. "You know, if you break that, I'm not replacing it."
"Oh yeah, you think we're gonna replace it?" Rocket snarked.
You looked at them. "That's not what I said, is it? I said I'm not replacing it. Meaning if you break it, there just won't be one. I'm not going to reward bad behavior by replacing it if you break it."
You heard Rocket mutter, "Whatever," and not long after you started hearing the noises of them bickering and smacking at each other again.
"Enough!" you say in a loud, firm voice that honestly startled Peter a bit and caught the attention of Kraglin from the table where he was doing a puzzle he found on a shelf. Your desire to find a book forgotten you left the sitting room, saying, "God, you act like children!"
You passed Gamora on your way out and said, "How do you deal with them?!" You continued on without waiting for an answer and Gamora shot a disapproving look at the pair on the couch, clearly unhappy that they were still finding ways to piss you off.
You went back into the kitchen, retrieved a glass from the cupboard, the whiskey bottle from the other night from the fridge, and sat at the table.
Yondu walked in about ten minutes later. "Starting a little early, I see." He wasn't actually sure if it'd be early to start drinking by Terran customs or not, but he knew from when he still had his crew and the Eclector, his crew typically weren't allowed to start in until all their day's duties were done, which, not always, but usually wasn't until after dinner. Outward appearance would have suggested otherwise, but he kept a tighter ship than one might think. Couldn't have someone piss drunk on the job and fucking everything up, now could he? That's not to say the crew always listened... but they were well aware of the consequences of getting caught drunk on the job.
You only answered back with a, "There are glasses in the cupboard if you want some."
Yondu chuckled and went for a glass, not one to refuse a drink.
As soon as he sat down you stood up. "I'll be back." you announce.
Yondu poured himself a glass and you shortly returned with another bottle of whiskey from the cellar. "Bottle was almost gone," you explain, setting the new bottle on the table and re-taking your seat.
Yondu looked at you, amused, but also mildly wondering where you had retrieved a second bottle from. He had never been bothered to explore the cellar. If he had he would have known you kept most of your unopened alcohol down there, where it could stay cool without needing a refrigerator.
Yondu took a sip, and almost recoiled, having not expected this Terran stuff to be quite so strong. It wasn't anything he couldn't handle, mind you, but he had honestly just assumed Terran whiskey would be weak. From experience with Peter, the boy always got piss drunk after only barely a couple shots of Xandarian liquor, which wasn't very strong, so he just assumed Terrans had a naturally lower tolerance. Now he just supposed Quill was a lightweight.
"Anything on your mind?" Yondu asked. If you were sitting here drinking alone surely there must be.
You glance up. "Nope," you say, as you down the rest of your glass. You pour another.
"Uh huh... right. That's why you look like a grump-ass sitting here drinking all by yourself then."
You give him a look, gesturing to him with your glass. "You're sitting right there aren't you? Looks like I ain't alone."
Yondu chuckled and shook his head. Cheeky shit. "Wanna talk about it?"
"Nope."
Yondu grinned and pointed at you knowingly. "Gotcha."
"What?" you say, confused by his tone.
"Ya said ya don't wanna talk about it. Means there's somethin' on yer mind."
You look at him through narrow eyes and take another sip.
"What is it? Tired of Rocket's shit? Don't blame ya. Rat can be a real asshole."
You sigh.
"So it is the rat, then?"
"Quit," you say, taking another drink and looking at him sternly.
Yondu held up his hands and backed off. "Alright. I won't push it."
"Push what?" came Peter's voice from the doorway as he and Kraglin walked into the kitchen. Peter grabbed a snack from the pantry and tossed one to Kraglin.
"Cool, didn't realize we were starting a party" Kraglin joked, referring to the two whiskey bottles on the table and you and Yondu sitting there with your glasses.
Figuring you might as well offer them some you motioned to the cupboard again. "Glasses up there. Might as well join us."
You didn't have to ask them twice. Peter got down a couple glasses and Kraglin poured them some drink.
Peter nodded to the two bottles and joked asking if you were trying to see who could outdrink the other.
You shrugged. "Nah. If we were to do that, he'd need to catch up."
Yondu laughed. "You don't wanna go there, missy. I'll drink ya under the table before you knew what hit you." He chuckled and elbowed Kraglin in the arm, who snickered, knowing full well Yondu could drink like a tank.
You rolled your eyes. "Like I said, you'd need to catch up to me first. I'm about four ahead of you.
Yondu's head snapped back to you glancing from your drink to you. "Four?" You must be joking. You weren't even tipsy yet that he could tell.
You were unable to hold back a laugh. "Nah, I'm only messing with you." You downed your glass. "I'm two ahead after that one." You poured yourself another glass. You grinned slightly. "Again, do I need to wait for you to catch up?"
Yondu grinned at you, his eyes almost inquisitive. "Ya really sure ya wanna do that?" He was confident you didn't stand a chance.
Peter laughed. "What, you scared she'll outdrink you?"
Yondu rolled his eyes and downed his glass. "No. Jus' concerned she'll hurt herself tryin'," he laughed.
Now you rolled your eyes. "Fine. Don't. I'll accept your admission of defeat." you say with a shrug as you take another sip. This was almost definitely the buzz talking. You weren't a lightweight, but you still weren't exactly the heaviest drinker.
Peter and Kraglin hid giggles behind their glasses as Yondu gave you a hard look and poured himself another glass and downed it.
"There, I'm caught up." he said, pouring himself another glass to match you. "I'll give you one more chance to back out, sweetheart."
You down your glass. "I ain't your sweetheart, grandpa."
Yondu narrowed his eyes and downed his as well. "Then it's on, pipsqueak."
"Ooh-hoho. You're gonna regret that." you say, unable to hold back a grin as you poured another round for the two of you.
Peter and Kraglin were now openly laughing at the show as they sipped their drinks.
Yondu tipped his glass to you and took a sip. "We'll see." He wasn't really concerned with the drinking game. He was fairly certain he'd win. He did, however, think the whiskey might loosen your tongue, get you to talk to him. Maybe he'd eventually get around to asking why you lived in such a big place by yourself or what was in the forest that you kept walking into.
You followed his lead, sipping your current glass rather than downing it right away. Maybe it was the buzz starting to talk, but you suddenly were curious about something. "I don't think you guys ever told me why you needed to go into hiding in the first place."
"Fury didn't tell you?" Peter asked.
"Nope. He was too busy moving you guys in and changing up my house and getting into my shit to mention it." you say, taking another sip.
Yondu also sipped. Tongue loosening: Check.
"Well it's kinda a long story," Peter began, "but short version, we were hired to do a job for these people, and we did it, but then Rocket insulted them, and stole their shit, and now they've vowed vengeance."
"And they ain't the forgivin' type." Kraglin added.
"No. Definitely not," said Yondu mournfully, taking another sip. Bad enough his crew mutinied and he blasted his ship to hell, now he had to go into hiding. Yondu Udonta doesn't hide... unless forced to by the Nova Corps because he joined his boy's little team of galaxy savers, apparently... He supposed it was better than jail. He should really thank Peter for pulling those strings sometime.
"Anyway, so when the Nova Corps heard about it they insisted we go into hiding until they could try and smooth it over."
"Hmm." You say, finishing your glass. "So they're trying to beg for your lives, is that it?"
Peter shrugged awkwardly. "More or less."
"They must really like you." you laughed, looking down as Yondu poured everyone another round.
"They should," Yondu said. "He saved the galaxy twice."
Peter looked at him and he tried to hide how his heart swelled. Receiving praise from the blue man for things other than thievery was still new to him, but he didn't exactly hate it.
Yondu ignored his gaze. He wasn't about to get caught up in sentiment. He changed the subject. "Why don't ya tell us a little about yerself?"
You pretended to think a bit before taking a drink and saying, "Hmm... Nope."
Yondu held back a sigh. Tongue loosening: Un-Check. He tipped back his glass and nodded to you, as if to challenge.
You tipped your glass back in turn and as you poured another Yondu taunted, "I think that was five now, sure ya don't wanna slow down?"
You give him a patronizing look. "Is that your way of saying you give up?" You started to giggle behind your hand when Yondu's expression read 'Oh please.' and he finished his glass to keep the pour even between you.
Kraglin grinned wide and nudged Peter, "Eh, Pete, tell her about that time you got stabbed for flirting with that A'askvarii chick."
Peter's eyes widened and he looked at Kraglin, "Not cool, dude!"
Yondu chuckled and you just looked at Peter inquisitively, having no idea what an 'A'askvarii' was. Before you could ask Yondu spoke up.
"If I remember correctly he didn't get stabbed for that one. Kree girl tried to rip out his thorax. He got stabbed for trying to pull a runner on a Rajack girl." Yondu said, grinning before taking another drink.
Peter glared at him. "New topic." He looked at you. "What got you into archery?"
You sighed through your nose. You supposed it was an innocent enough question. "Dad taught me. How'd you'd come about living in space?"
Peter made a face and downed his drink. "Uh, long story, another time..." How would he explain that the reason he was in space was because his Celestial father sent the man sitting next to you to abduct him... and make it not sound awful? Better think of something lighter. "Uh... Got any family around or is it just you?"
You eyes narrowed. Your former giddiness visibly left you.
'Oh no.' Peter thought. That apparently wasn't lighter... You must not get along with your family. He tried to fix it. "Ok, touchy subject- I mean... Oh look, your glass is empty!" He quickly poured you and him another round.
You actually almost laughed at that, and a slight grin cracked your face.
Yondu saw how your expression changed and incorrectly assumed that it meant you weren't actually that irritated by Peter's question. He then took that incorrect assumption to pose his own question. "So, you didn't quite answer the other night, and I'm still curious. How come it's just you in this big old house?"
This prompted Kraglin to add his own question. "Yeah, and I've been wondering too, how's come you don't keep any photos?"
Your glare returned. You sat your glass down and stood up saying in a slightly slurred speech, "I have to pee." and excused yourself from the table, stumbling a bit as the alcohol hit you. You righted yourself, earning a chuckle from Peter and Kraglin, who knew too well that it's always easy to believe you aren't as drunk as you are until you stand up and the room spins.
Yondu also laughed, but internally cursed himself. He wasn't gonna get any answers like this. He hoped that maybe there was still a chance to save it when you got back. He saw a hint of pain in your eyes just before you left, and it made him want to know why. He felt he was so close to putting the pieces together.
***
You head to the bathroom irritated at being asked the personal questions. Leave it up to your new house mates to ruin your buzz.
You only got more irritated upon entering the bathroom, however.
Someone had left their wet towels on the floor. Rolling your eyes in annoyance you kicked them aside to make your way to the toilet. Mercifully you didn't find any unpleasant surprises waiting inside it like you had been. Peter must have gotten the "Flush the damn toilet!" message through to Drax. However, once you had done your business you found that someone couldn't have been bothered to replace the toilet roll properly, just having sat it on the roll holder.
You sigh irritably and replace it properly yourself. Yes, it could have been worse. They could have not replaced it at all and forced you to do a mini walk of shame to the sink cupboard to retrieve it, but you were too cranky to look at the bright side.
Then you went to wash your hands, only to see someone had smeared toothpaste all over the sink, a big pet peeve of yours. Your nostrils flared and you muttered to yourself as you washed that you weren't going to clean it. Screw that.
You went to dry your hands, and find there was no towel to dry them. You gritted your teeth and ripped a towel from the small closet, hanging it on the hook when you were finished.
Before leaving the bathroom you tried to gather yourself, taking a deep breath and telling yourself to calm down. It would be ok. You were just a little drunk. It wasn't that big of a deal. You were going to go back out and try to have some fun drinking that blue bastard under the table. (This, of course, was the alcohol talking. False confidence. You really did never stand a chance of outdrinking the Ravager captain.)
You start to open the door, and that's when you reach your breaking point.
***
After you left, Kraglin nudged Peter again, whispering the words, "A'askvarii girl," to him and giggling like a child.
Peter smacked him in the arm, "Quit it! That was one time! And I was only trying to get information! Tell him Yondu!" He tried to look angry, but the whiskey was having its usual effect on him, making him a giggly little bitch.
Yondu only grinned and shook his head. "I dunno boy, you were a little too convincing if ya ask me... Nobody asked you to sleep with her."
Kraglin bust out laughing at Peter's face, which was an odd mix of horror, drunken mirth, and "Dammit, you got me." He playfully shoved Peter and Peter shoved back with a "You suck!" which prompted Kraglin to squeeze his side, which of course made Peter jolt with a laugh and smack him away.
Kraglin only did it again and Peter laughed out a "Quit it!" while smacking him again.
Yondu just rolled his eyes and chuckled, sipping his whiskey as he watched his boys mess around like they did when they were younger on the Eclector.
After a pinch to the knee Peter bolted off his chair, only to have Kraglin follow, laughing, "Come back 'ere, ya coward!" He got Peter in a headlock and started to give him a noogie.
Peter laughed and managed to worm away, taking off into the hallway.
Yondu watched in amusement as Kraglin followed Peter out of the kitchen, and listened as the sounds of their shenanigans took them from the front door down the hall. That's when he heard the sound of a door slamming and a loud cry of "OW! Mother---FUCKer!" that sounded suspiciously like you.
'Oh shit,' he thought, standing from the table to go inspect the damage.
***
It had all happened fairly quickly.
You had opened the bathroom door maybe a foot before it slammed back in your face. Literally in your face. You recoiled and swore loudly, the flash of pain made your eyes water and you saw red before you even realized you were bleeding.
Kraglin and Peter jerked away from the door in startled shock after hearing you cry out. They had only been horsing around when their antics caused Peter to fall back into the door just as you opened it. They jumped when the door slammed back open with an incredible BANG against the wall, and their eyes went wide when they saw you standing there, murderous rage in your eyes and blood running from your nose down your chin.
Maybe it was because he was the nearest person, or maybe it was because he instinctually held up his hands and said "Sorry! Sorry! It was an accident!" but Peter was the one you lunged at.
You grabbed him by the shoulder and slammed him into the wall, nearly a week's worth of frustration and rage channeled through you as his body connected with the plaster.
Peter, not just going to stand there and let himself get beaten up, tried to grab your wrists and get you off him, but you evaded his attempts and punched him in the stomach.
This slightly knocked the wind from him, but he managed to grab your wrist and push off from the wall. He spun you around and tried to restrain you in a bear hug, saying, "Take it easy!" but you only dropped to your knees and lurched forward, flipping him over your back towards the front door.
Kraglin looked to Yondu, who watched from outside the kitchen door near the end of the hall. His gaze asked what to do, but Yondu only shrugged and didn't try to intervene. He knew Peter could handle himself and he was sure you needed to let off some steam, so he just enjoyed the show.
The commotion brought the others in though. Gamora and Mantis flew down the stairs, while Rocket, Drax, and Groot stepped out of the sitting room to witness the fight with wide eyes. They didn't know what had happened, but you looked ready for the kill, and to the few who could see it from their vantage, you looked almost terrifying with your bared teeth full of blood.
You now straddling Peter, attempting to throw a punch when he blocked it and flipped the two of you over. He breathlessly told you to settle down as you struggled, but you wouldn't hear it. If anything it seemed to make you more pissed off, and Gamora's cries for the two of you to stop fell on deaf ears.
You kneed Peter in the stomach and flipped the two of you back over. You weren't sure what next possessed you, but you threw your head down and sank your teeth into his shoulder.
Peter threw his head back and cried out in pain, mixing in a few curses as well.
Yondu cocked his head, seeming unsure on whether he wanted to be impressed or not to see you, Miss SHIELD Agent, fight dirty. Kraglin finally spoke up to say, "Hey, hey, now! No bitin'!" as if he were refereeing a wrestling match.
Right about then you felt large strong hands grip you about the waist, surprising you into releasing your bite on Peter as they pulled you off of him. The arms moved from your waist to secure your wrists and before you knew it you were being restrained in half a bear-hug by one very strong arm as you were turned away from Peter and pulled towards the front door.
Drax paused to open the door and, turning you to face him, flatly said. "You need to take a walk."
"Drax!" Gamora hissed, appalled that he was throwing their host out of her own house, despite the circumstances.
Rocket, of course, laughed and asked how you liked it, like an asshole. It was only then he saw the blood around your nose and mouth and his expression changed slightly to reflect his shock, now wondering if you had actually taken a chunk out of Peter when you bit him. Were you some kind of maniac?
You spat blood at him, only for it to land on the floor at his feet as he was standing too far away, and then slammed the door behind you on your way out.
Gamora came the rest of the way down the stairs to inspect Peter's shoulder, seeing the blood on his shirt.
"It's fine," he assured, "It's hers, not mine. See, she didn't break skin." He pulled back his shirt to prove it. "I think I accidentally broke her nose though. That's what started it."
Gamora looked at him in confusion. "You broke her nose?! What the hell, Peter!"
"It was an accident!" he said again.
Gamora took a step back. "Ok. Tell me what happened. Start from the beginning."
"Well, we were all drinking-"
Gamora threw up her hands. "Oh, well that explains everything!" she interrupted bitterly. Dumb stuff almost always seemed to happen when those guys and alcohol mixed.
Rocket spoke up. "You were drinking and didn't invite us? Rude."
Gamora threw him an unamused look. "Not the point, Rocket."
Peter tried again. He explained he and Kraglin joined you and Yondu drinking, you got up to use the bathroom, he and Kraglin started horsing around, and one thing lead to another until he fell back against the door as you were coming out of the bathroom and it must have hit you and pissed you off.
Gamora looked at him. So it really had just been a big drunken accident. She also then realized Drax had not only just threw their host out of their own house, but threw you out while you were also drunk, broken and bleeding.
They were sooo getting kicked out.
"We should call her back in." said Gamora. "You shouldn't have thrown her out, Drax. This is her home. We're only guests."
Drax looked confused. "Why? It worked with Rocket. I thought I was helping?"
"Don't bother trying," said Yondu nonchalantly. "Bet she's already well into the forest by now."
They looked at him. "How would you know that?" Gamora asked.
He shrugged. "It's where she went the other night she got mad. Saw her heading there out the window when Rat there destroyed the kitchen and ruined diner." He left out the bit that he'd also seen you head there in the middle of the night too. He was saving that bit of mystery for himself to solve.
Rocket just rolled his eyes and crossed his arms at being called out for his past grievances. It got cleaned, didn't it?
"I'm sure she'll come back when she's ready," Yondu added. He'd be lying if he said he wasn't tempted to go look for you, if for no other reason than to see where you kept going to out there, but he had a feeling that if you didn't want to be found, he wouldn't find you. He might have some experience tracking, but he couldn't also forget what you did for a living. While he might not know much about what your job entailed, he got the feeling you weren't just some desk-jocky.
Besides, if you found your way back, drunk, the other night, he was sure you could do it again.
Begrudgingly Gamora agreed to wait.
And wait they did.
:: kageyama tobio x f!reader :: playlist :: masterlist ::
:: taglist: closed :: wc: 1.7k ::
the last you had heard of kageyama tobio, he was following his grandfather’s footsteps and leaving you behind to join the syndicate. a chance meeting throws him back into your life, along with all of the memories.
tw: mafia elements, profanity, kidnapping, gun and knife violence, knives, gunshot and knife wounds
You have never seen Kageyama Tobio cry, but right now, there are tears in his eyes.
The cold steel of the gun makes you whimper. Never in your life have you ever been in a situation like this. Hell, you’ve never even imagined you would be in a situation like this. All you can do is stay still in Hajime’s grip and pray that he won’t pull the trigger. Kageyama is looking back and forth between you and Oikawa, seemingly looking for a way out.
In your heart, you know there isn’t one.
Somebody will die here tonight. Would it be too self-sacrificing to say that you wish it is you? Kageyama would never allow it, but between you and him, he’s the one who is worth more. When you have to put a price on life, his wins.
You watch Kageyama carefully. His right hand is slowly drifting towards his back, subtle enough that neither Oikawa nor Hajime have noticed. He must have his gun, right? He’s looking straight at you, his eyes more emotional than you’ve ever seen them. What is his plan here? If he pulls the gun, Hajime will definitely shoot you.
Think, y/n. Think.
Hajime had knocked away the gun you had, but you can’t recall if he took it or left it on the floor. There’s a high chance that he has another sort of weapon on him, maybe a knife or something. With the way he’s caging you, there isn’t an easy way to try to grab for something; your hands are trapped at your sides. Plus, with the gun against your head, you don’t want to risk anything.
Four things happen at once.
Kageyama grabs his gun from the back of his jeans and simultaneously pops the safety off and points it at Oikawa.
Hajime loosens his grip on you and points his gun at Kageyama.
Oikawa shoots at Kageyama, who ducks.
And finally, something solid slides across the floor and hits your foot.
Kageyama’s switchblade.
With Hajime momentarily distracted, Oikawa shooting at Kageyama, and Kageyama ducking and trying to shoot back, you duck down to the floor and reach for the knife, flicking it open and stabbing behind you. You know you’ve met your mark when Hajime’s grip loosens completely and he falls back, clutching his abdomen.
There’s a gunshot, a shout, and Kageyama slumps to the floor.
---
There’s a particular memory you have, of a summer in high school, Kageyama teaching you how to use and care for the switchblade. You were more interested in tricks than any practical uses, but you remember one topic that you thoroughly enjoyed.
Throwing.
The way the knife spins through the air, slicing before it hits the target, mesmerizes you. When you brought it up to Kageyama, you never thought learning would be pragmatic. It was supposed to be a party trick; something you could show off at a darts board at a bar, something you could impress people with if you were drunk enough.
Nevertheless, he taught you, and you picked it up with ease. It was simple, at least for you. Something that required less brain power than studying for a test, something that required a routine that stayed the same every time. The only things that ever changed would be your target, the distance, and the weight of the knife.
Luckily for you, the same knife you had grown up practicing with is the same one that’s currently in your hand.
It’s like second nature to you; like the back of your hand, the curve of Kageyama’s jaw, the distinct smell of the grass in the summer after a heavy rain back home.
Before Kageyama has even hit the ground, the knife is out of your hand, spinning, spinning, spinning towards your target.
You don’t think you made a noise when you threw, but Oikawa must have a sixth sense for this sort of thing, because he turns and locks his wide eyes with yours as the knife arcs through the air and embeds itself deep within his chest.
You don’t have the time to think about whether or not you just committed murder; your only concern now is getting Kageyama and getting the hell out of here. He’s still conscious when you dash over to him, and you scramble out of your t-shirt to press it to the wound. Nearly identical to the one he had stumbled into the penthouse with that night, you worry about him surviving another gunshot wound to the same area.
Carefully, you support his weight and stagger to his Artura. When he’s safely secured in the passenger seat, you dial Miwa and set off towards the penthouse.
---
Miwa meets you in the garage; Kiyoko’s already with her. Kiyoko takes Kageyama upstairs as Miwa pulls you into a hug. You’ve been missing for over twelve hours, it’s now five in the morning, she says. You follow her upstairs where she wrestles you into bed with food and a glass of water. You put up quite the fight; you’re exhausted and could pass out at any moment, but Kageyama is your only concern.
She stays until you’ve finally given up, sleep pulling you under.
---
When you wake again, the sun is setting. You’ve slept the day away. You’re alone in Miwa’s room, and you bolt out of bed. Kageyama must be better by now, surely someone would’ve woken you up if something was wrong. When you reach his room, the door is open. He’s sitting up, Miwa in a chair at his bedside. Tears are falling from your eyes as you cross the short distance, carefully wrapping your arms around him.
“Thank God, you’re alright.”
“I could say the same for you.” His voice is scratchy, but you’ve never been so glad to hear him speak. You hear Miwa push her chair back and leave, pulling the door closed behind her.
You pull away from Kageyama, instead sliding under the covers next to him. “I thought I told you not to do anything stupid.”
He chuckles, a small grin on his face. “Nothing is stupid when it comes to you.”
“You literally walked straight into a gun.”
“To come get you.”
“Not the point.”
He sighs. “Well, it all worked out, didn’t it?”
“I guess.” You bury yourself in his chest, mindful of his injury, before you remember the promise you made to yourself while kidnapped. “Tobio?” Your voice is soft.
“Yes?”
“I love you.”
“I love you too, y/n.”
---
Kageyama makes a full recovery, as do you. There are many mental hurdles to tackle as you become more and more immersed in Kageyama’s business, but with Miwa and Kageyama by your side, you feel like you can take on anything. You move out of your apartment and into the penthouse when you graduate with your bachelor’s degree, although you’ve practically been living at the penthouse anyway. It all ends up working out regardless; Hana and Ushijima are engaged and bought a house together.
You get into your medical school of choice and begin working under Kiyoko for the time being. She teaches you things that medical school won’t; things specific to your role in Kageyama’s life.
Kageyama is content for you to remain on the sidelines, simply watching, but you disagree. When you graduate from medical school, you want to share some of Kageyama’s burden; you want to become his partner in everything. He concedes eventually, grumbling something about how “all the women in his life are happy to throw themselves in the way of danger.” You and Miwa laugh; because really, did he expect anything less from you? Kageyama’s only caveat is that you learn how to protect yourself, something you’re happy to oblige. Miwa provides lessons, and you learn quickly. Everything from hand-to-hand combat to how to shoot a gun is covered.
The nostalgia of being with Kageyama makes itself known every day, but you wouldn’t have it any other way.
---
“Stop moving.”
“I’m not moving.”
“I’m going to get mascara in your eye if you don’t stop.”
You sigh. “I don’t know why you’re putting it on anyway, I’m just going to cry it off.”
Miwa grins, holding up the tube. “It’s waterproof.”
The door swings open, Hana dashing through. “You look so, so gorgeous, y/n. I’m so happy for you.”
“Thanks, Hana.”
The door opens again, this time Ushijima and Miya Atsumu walk through. Ushijima stops to talk to Hana while Atsumu strides towards you. In the years since the two of you were first introduced, it’s become somewhat of a running joke for Atsumu to flirt with you just to piss off Kageyama.
Miwa steps back to let you look in the mirror and Atsumu steps closer, placing his hands on your shoulders. “Y’know, y/n, it’s not too late to be with me instead.”
You roll your eyes and slap his hands off. “I do have a knife on me.”
He just winks. “Even better.”
After the finishing touches are put in place, the ceremony begins. It’s an elaborate thing; far out of your comfort zone, but something that has to be done for appearances. Kageyama wasn’t too pleased about the extravagance either, which is why you two had said your vows in secret weeks ago, with only Miwa as witness.
He’s grinning and crying when you meet him at the altar. “Hello, wife.”
“Hello, husband.”
The ceremony is long and you’re relieved when it’s finally over. The relief doesn’t last for long though because you’re quickly shuffled to the reception, another over-the-top event with too many people. At the earliest chance, you tug Kageyama by his suit-clad arm and into the hallway.
You groan when you’re finally alone. “Why did we have to do all this, again?”
He shrugs. “Not sure. I need a drink. Or something.”
Grinning, you lift a flask from where you’d hid it under your large dress. “Something like this?”
“Perfect.”
After you’ve both drained the flask of its contents, you sigh. “Can we just leave?”
“I don’t see why not. It’s our wedding anyway.”
“Great, let’s go.”
Later, when you’re both exhausted and cuddled up beneath the sheets, you lean in and press a kiss to Kageyama’s cheek.
“I love you, Tobio.”
“And I love you, y/n.”
Permanent Guest
Animal shapeshifter au. Warnings of blood, injuries, animal harm, animal death, drugging. A slow start.
I’m going to be honest, I don’t even really know what this story is.
The back of my house has a rather large forest area. There’s no other house near mine for a decent ways. Walking at dusk is the best with the sun coming through the trees. My only annoyance is the hunters that like to be around my home.
I’ve tried getting them to stay away, but there’s nothing that could be done since they’re right outside my borders, so it’s fully legal. The far-off gunshots get unsettling sometimes and even spook my cat. I’ve gotten a few deep scratches from them being startled at the sound.
I’m going through my familiar path again. I’ve done this same path so many times it would be possible to walk with my eyes closed. Obviously, that would be a stupid idea though with all the wild animals around.
Far off in the distance, I heard frequent shuffling, like something was desperately trying to get away from something else but can’t. My mind immediately went to the idea that it could be a poor animal caught in some type of trap by the hunters. Walking up towards the noise, the familiar sight of a fox was seen. It has its paw stuck in something. As I got closer, it didn’t take long for the fox to notice my presence. They backed away and ducked down with their ears back. What I saw made me want to hurt those damn hunters. It was a steel-jaw trap. Its paw was bleeding pretty badly. They have been struggling for a while already. I was in a state of panic about what to do. I could just open the trap, but judging by the injury, they’re going to need some help since it’s a deep wound. They’ll most likely run if I just open it though.
That’s just the chance that will have to be taken. I walk over and it drops down as far as it could to the ground. I instinctively put my hands up and get really close. The trap and the fox were within arm’s reach if I bent down. “It’s alright, I’m not going to hurt you. I want to help before someone that will hurt you does come,” At this point I’m wondering why I’m trying to talk to it. There’s no way it can understand me. I’ve never seen such a blond-colored fox either before. That’s rather odd. The fox seems to perk up a little bit, but still cautious. “Now, I’m going to open the trap, but please don’t run.”
I push the springs on the side of the trap to make it open. The fox quickly pulls its paw out and takes a few steps back without using the injured front paw. They locked eyes with me, but it wasn’t kept long as I looked back at the trap. “Why are they using an illegal item? These things are so inhumane…” I mumble. A lightbulb goes off in my head. This can possibly be used to make them stop hunting around my home!
Another sudden thought popped into my head though. If I take the trap, they can possibly frame me for having them and trying to get the hunters to stay away from my home. Am I thinking too far into it? Probably. Should I take my chances? Better not. One of the fox’s ears flicked backwards as they looked further from the way I came from. It immediately went towards that direction, but looked back towards me, almost like it wants me to follow. Is that really a smart decision? I stood there, unsure whether to follow or just go back home. It kept waiting for me to come with.
“My house is the other way, come with me and I’ll try to patch you up.” It didn’t come closer. “What could possibly be taking your attention that way?” I question, which is once again ridiculous since it can’t answer. I heave a sigh and start to follow.
Not too far ahead was another trap, but there was something else stuck in it. A… cat?... To be fair, the cat is really big, even for a Maine Coon. But what in the world is a cat doing so far in the woods?
The fox went right up to the cat, making the cat look at it, then at me. The cat has a glare that was far from just unsettling. Unlike the fox, both of its front paws were stuck in the trap. I did the same thing with the trap from before. It immediately tried to take off, but fell. I pick it up and start walking towards my house. He quickly tried to be let free by repeatedly biting and scratching my arms, and even trying to go for my face. It was a struggle, and him being such a large cat really doesn’t help. He kept hissing, growling, clawing, writhing, biting, everything to get me to drop him. I was getting multiple wounds from his struggles.
“Can you stop struggling!? I’m trying to help, damn it! You’re lucky I’m just as stubborn to not leave you out here to die.” I hissed. Almost like he could understand, he quickly lowers his struggles. Looking to my right side, the fox was still following closely, keeping their injured paw from touching the ground.
My arms started getting tired when we finally reached my home. I enter and place the still bleeding cat on the toilet seat in my bathroom. I grab a towel and get it wet with warm water. He still wouldn’t stop locking his glare on me as I wipe his arms. The fox let out a little bark at the cat, making him stop glaring.
“So that’s why you made me follow? You were worried about your friend?” I smack my forehead. “Why do I keep talking like this? They obviously can’t understand me,” I get an old shirt and cut it to wrap around the wounds. “Hopefully that’s not too tight.” I then sit on the floor in front of the fox. He’s a lot more friendly and open to me than the cat is, and even put his paw forward for me. It didn’t take long to clean him with another clean rag and wrap his wound as well. Luckily, I was able to get to them before permanent damage was done. Well, it might still scar though. I then pour peroxide on my cuts and bandage the few that were deeper than the others.
I bring them to my couch in the living room. They keep staring at me as the silence stays. After a minute, I let out a frustrated groan. “Ugh, what now? I could get in so much trouble keeping a wild fox,” I look at the cat. “You’d be fine, but it’s easy to tell you don’t want to be near me. How did you even get here anyways? The only people around are hunters, and they’ve shot my cats before, so you definitely don’t belong to them,” they just keep looking at me. I sigh in frustration again. “You two will just have to stay inside for a few days. After that, you’re both on your own. Judging that you’re close, at least you’ll be together.”
Looking out my window, the sun is down now. “Ill give two days max until a hunter will be pounding on my door.” I decided to make dinner for myself and my “guests”. They oddly preferred the meat cooked. My orange tabby, Nacho, didn’t care at all and ate both whenever I gave it to them.
After that, I sat on the couch with the now three animals. Nacho in my lap, and the other two cuddling up in a way that’s adorable. They’re incredibly well-behaved for wild animals. They have to belong to someone or something. I rub one of my wrapped cuts from the cat while watching the comedy show that’s on. It’s going to be sore for a while. Fur suddenly rubs against the wrapped wound. It’s a rather deep one the cat got onto my forearm. I look over to see the black cat looking at me, almost in an apologetic way. I gently rub his head for a second. Surprisingly, he lets me. “It’s alright. You were in a panic. Just… try not to do it again, alright?” I asked in a joking manner.
I went to bed not long after. In the morning, the sun went right onto my face. I get up to check on the two sooner than later. What I saw in the living room made me freeze and nearly scream. My hands quickly cover my mouth before a noise comes out and wakes them. Who exactly? The two naked men on my couch. Waking them wouldn’t go well for anyone, especially startling them awake. There was no sight of the fox and cat. The cloth I used on their wounds are on the floor next to the men. What really caught my attention looking at the two men was the wounds on their arms in similar places the cat and fox did.
My mind is flabbergasted as it made the connection the only way this could be is if these two ARE the fox and cat, but that couldn’t be possible! The odd ears on their heads and tails that match the animals as well say otherwise.
I have to force myself to not to look at their lower places. Luckily, it’s easier with the blond laying on the black-haired one. The blond wakes up as I start to walk backwards out of the room. He turns and we lock eyes, both freezing in our spots.
The awkward silence between our stares was deafening. “You two have some explaining to do when he wakes.” I whisper.
“No need to wait.” Replied the black-haired male as his eyes opened to look at me. The blond goes to sit up.
“Waitwaitwaitwait! Don’t get up! I- I need to get you guys towels or something!” They look at me confused. Don’t tell me they’re used to being naked... I get towels and come back to them sitting up straight on the couch. I toss the towels at them with the feeling of heat rapidly growing on my face. They at least did cover their laps with the towels.
“So, first question, where are you two from?”
“We live just a few miles away actually! As to what we were doing around here? We were testin’ our animal forms!”
I nodded. “That explains why you’re around here, but why didn’t you guys transform back to unlatch the traps yourselves?”
“We can’t change to our other form when we’re under emotional distress. It’s the same way we’re not as fully logical either. Our animal form has more of our instincts that control than our regular mind.” The blond elbows the other.
He glares at the blond before looking back at me. “Sorry again for injuring you.”
I shrug. “Eh, once again, it wasn’t really your fault. Anyways, what will you guys do now?” I ask.
“After you went to bed last night, we decided we’ll stay a few days if you’re beautiful self is fine with it. We were actually going to show ya our human side today, but uh… guess we must have changed back in our sleep!” he lets out a little laugh.
“What would staying at my home do? I’m sure I could just drive you back to your home or something.”
“We want to repay ya for saving our behinds from being killed!”
“He wants to. Unfortunately for the both of us, it’s impossible to change his mind.” He crosses his arms as he looks at the blond.
“C’mon, Sho! Ya don’t have to be such a downer about it!”
Sho?... Is that his name? “Oh! And could I get your guys’ names?”
“Of course! Mine is Hizashi! His name is Shouta! What’s yours, our beautiful savior!?”
I look at him weirdly. “Savior? You can quit with that now, I get it. My name is Y/N.”
Hizashi shakes his head with a big smile. “Nope, not gonna stop! And what a great name for such a beautiful person!”
“I’d like to get back to our home sooner than later. Zashi, how about we share our numbers and have them drive us home for now?” Hizashi’s reply was a somehow bigger smile and frantic nod. Before we could do anything else, there was an aggressive pounding on my door. I already have a good idea to whom it might be, and I start to worry. Hizashi looks at me with worry himself.
“Wrap the towels around yourselves and try to hide your animal details,” I walk over to the door to open it. In the corner of my eye the two of them try to wrap the towel around them, but Hizashi has trouble with his extra large and fluffy tail. Shouta was able to manage hiding it within the towel. Looking back at the door, it was the most problematic hunter around my home. Of COURSE it would be him. Oh why fate did it have to be his traps!?
He’s definitely not happy either. Right after opening the door, he forces his way into my house. This isn’t the first time he’s done this. I quickly go over and sit next to Hizashi, almost accidentally sitting on his tail in the process. His ears are still up, but it almost looks like they’re ears on a headband, so hopefully Dabi doesn’t notice. Shouta’s ears pretty much just look like he has an odd hair style. He looks at the two guys with me, then back at me with a hint of disgust, but mostly anger and annoyance.
“I don’t appreciate you setting the damn animals in my traps free. Those fuckers have been coming around my home and killing my chickens.” Oh, gee! That’s SO bad. Seriously, I feel bad for the chickens, but I don’t feel a smidge bad for the man, especially now after he stooped to such a low to such inhumane traps.
“And you’re using illegal traps because?...” I pressure him for answers.
“Because I don’t care, and I want the pests to suffer.” I could feel Hizashi’s tail bristle with anger behind me. I was pretty angry with him myself. “You’re lucky I don’t call security about your illegal act.”
“Does it look like I care? They won’t believe you anyways. Same goes for your “friends”. They know you don’t like me around your property, and it would be easy to pin the blame on you for owning them.”
“You’re a horrible person! Your way of hunting is one I can never dig!” Hizashi pretty much growls.
“Did I ever ask for your opinion? I don’t think I did, nor do I care,” He looks at me with a harsh glare. “Don’t think of messing with my traps again,” He turns around and goes to leave. “Also, you better watch your back. You’ve messed with the wrong hunter.” He finishes and leaves.
The three of us look at each other.
“O...kay… that just happened.”
“We’re staying for a few days,” Shouta suddenly proclaims. Hizashi and I look at him incredulously. His brows furrow. “That man doesn’t seem like he was kidding. It might be better for you to not be alone with him around.”
He has a point, but Dabi hasn’t caused anything to harm me before. Then again, I haven’t touched his traps before. I don’t really want to keep two strange men- er- whatever they are, in my place for long.
“I’ll be fine. His threat was most likely empty. He can’t do anything drastic anyways.”
“I don’t know, he seemed pretty serious.” Hizashi was with Shouta on this, I can tell.
“If you’re so worried about it, I’ll get both your numbers and call if something happens.” They look at each other for a minute, then back to me.
“How about this, we stay for just a day, then you drop us off at our home, and you spend the night a few days after, just to make sure?”
I wasn’t too keen on going to their house from barely knowing them. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but I don’t really feel comfortable going to a stranger’s- two strangers’ house, you know?”
Hizashi nods in understanding. “Hmm... Oh! How about you come over for dinner in a week or something then? THAT could be our thanks for saving us?”
That doesn’t really do anything if they’re still going to stay for a day... Screw it. “That will work I guess,” Hizashi gets a big smile on his face again and lunges towards me in a hug.
.
.
.
.
His towel fell in the process of him standing up. A naked man is hugging me. Back up dude! This is beyond weird. “But could we go to your place to get clothes or something? I’m rather uncomfortable with you guys naked in my house.” Hizashi stops hugging me to look down. “Oops!” He grabs the towel. There’s a light tinge of red that spread across his face. “Sorry about that!” Sorry doesn’t excuse the sheer awkwardness I’m feeling now.
“That seems doable if it makes you that uncomfortable.” Shouta replies.
“Come on then.” I say, and go to grab my keys. Hizashi sits up front with me while Shouta sits in the center in the back. It didn’t take long to get to their house, which was a rather massive log cabin. “How did you guys manage to get such a house!? More importantly, how did I not know this was so close to mine!?”
Hizashi laughs as we get up to the entrance of it. “Impressed?”
“Honestly? Yeah.”
“Well, it just so happens to be easy with owning two flourishing businesses with the help of a few great friends!”
I blink owlishly at them. “How in the world are you smart enough for businesses but get stuck in-”
“Let’s not talk about that. We’re still pretty new to the countryside, ya dig? I’m much more of a city kitty, but Sho wanted to try the country. We stay together so I decided it wouldn’t hurt to try! Let me tell ya though, these bugs here are a nightmare!”
Shouta crouches down and grabs a key that was under a cat statue. The cat was sitting straight with its tail curled around its front paws, and was a light grayish color. The fur of it was long, wavy, and beautifully intricate. Definitely a better spot than many other home’s hidden key spots since there are a ton of other animal statues in the yard, and it's not the closest to the door.
He unlocked the door and the three of us entered. Their house is really tidy, and rather plain. Not many pictures in the living room. The floor is a light gray carpet and it has black furniture. A large corner couch with a loveseat next to it a bit farther up, closer to the flat screen. It didn’t take long for the two to come back fully clothed.
“So, what should we do?” I ask.
“You could show us that area you found us. The area is rather nice.” Shouta replies. I’m a bit perplexed at their decision. “You sure? You both could have died.” I reminded them.
“Oh, trust us, we’re definitely NEVER being in animal form around here again.” Hizashi informs.
We walked my path. There were no traps this time. I got to learn a lot about the two of them. They’re not so bad. “When do you guys need to be back for your companies? Shouldn’t you both be in touch in case something happens?” I question.
“This is our vacation time! Just to be on the safe side though we told them to call if it’s an extreme emergency, like if the building went on fire.” I nodded.
We get back to my place, and I pet my cat while sitting on the couch. Shouta looks in wonder. “Is something wrong?” I ask him.
“He’s wondering what you’re doing to your cat. You did the same thing to him, and he liked it.” Shouta glares at Hizashi for calling him out.
“Do you mean to pet? You’ve never done or seen something be pet?” I question.
“Pet? That’s what it’s called? But that’s what the animals are called, aren’t they?.” Once again, I'm flabbergasted by what they do know and what they don’t know.
“How do you guys not know this?” I question. Hizashi shrugs. “Eh, with our “odd traits” as you guys call them, it got pretty hard to stay in school and hold down a job. We didn’t really have internet for a while, so we couldn’t look this up. Some people dipped from our looks as soon as they came for an interview, but others stayed and work pretty well!”
“Well, I’m glad you guys are doing great on your own!”
Hizashi nods in agreement.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The week went by rather quickly after that night. They got rather touchy fast. I tend to think it might be their animal side so I don’t question it. Dabi hasn’t done anything. There haven’t even been any new traps. At least from what I could see. Thinking about it, that does seem a little suspicious though.
I was walking on my path again and got a call from Hizashi. It’s still surprising how well reception is around here. “What’s up you two?”
“Yo, Y/N! We’re already missin’ ya greatly! We were wondering if you could come over for dinner and movies tonight!” Already? It’s only been a few days since we last saw each other. I might as well get it over with now. I’m kind of torn whether to just leave them alone after or keep hanging out with them.
I stop walking, and go to reply. “That sounds g-”
“Chink” Something slams onto my leg, making me stop mid-sentence and hiss out in pain. Immediately Hizashi was worried. “Y/N!? What was that sound!? Are you okay!?”
It was one of those damn traps. So much for not seeing any. I look around my leg and check to make sure nothing is too damaged. I know to stay calm and not move my leg to prevent punctures. It’s not numb either, but it’s going to leave one hell of a bruise. “Yeah, just got caught in a trap.” I reply, and start to try opening it. This one is in much worse shape than the others were with Hizashi and Shouta. Mostly with the rust around it. I’m glad it got me instead of them, or they would have had to of been brought to the vet. That wouldn’t have gone well.
“WHAT!!?” He shrieks once what I said processed through his mind, catching the attention of Shouta when he asks something incoherent in the background. “Shit… Hate to bother you guys, but do you have a crowbar or something similar by chance? This one is rather rusted and I can’t get it open. It didn’t puncture thankfully though, so no worries there.”
There was really rapid shuffling over the phone. “C’mon Sho, we gotta save our babe! We’ll be right there!” Our... Babe...? He hung up.
It would be stupid to keep moving my leg. The only thing that could be done is stand still and wait. To pass the time, I look around trying to find if there might be another one. I think I can see one a ways to the left of me.
The wait hardly took any time at all with two familiar men barreling from the bushes in front of me, almost crashing into me in the process. “Calm down you two! It’s not that serious!” They’re breathing heavily as they look at me. Shouta’s holding the crowbar tight enough for his hands to shake. I grab Hizashi’s shoulders and make him look at me again. He calms down incredibly quickly. It might help since he notices I’m not bleeding. The same thing for Shouta. I lean down and forcefully push down the springs again. “Put it between the jaws by my leg and pry it open.”
Shouta does, and it cries in protest to be opened. He’s able to open it just enough for me to slide my foot out. They both wrap an arm around my back like my leg was broken and I needed help standing. It wasn’t nearly that bad. “You guys are seriously overreacting.” I comment. They keep looking at my leg. “It’s just to be on the safe side. Let us help you now.” Shouta says.
“I can’t believe he hurt you.” Hizashi says angrily. I try to dissuade them from doing anything drastic. “No, it’s my fault for not being more cautious.”
“Don’t be trying to justify his actions. He WILL face consequences for this.” Shouta growls. Hizashi gets happy suddenly. “Hey! We can walk you to our place for the night! We already just put the food in the oven!” That slightly seems to calm Shouta as he nods in confirmation.
I laugh at his optimism. “Sure sounds like a plan! What movies are you guys thinking?” I ask as we walk. Taking one step forward with the leg that was caught, I’m actually thankful they’re helping me since the bruising pain nearly made me fall. They hold me slightly tighter.
“What’s your favorite movie? Hopefully we have it.” Hizashi says. I look at him with a smirk. “What, trying to impress me or something?”
He replies with a smirk back. “That’s for you to decide~” I roll my eyes at him. Shouta grew a small smile as I purposefully leaned more of my weight on Hizashi. “SUCH a charmer.”
“You know it babe!”
Footsteps of someone else came stomping towards us. They picked up on it quickly with Hizashi’s ears twitching. “I thought I told you not to mess with my traps.” Came the all too familiar voice of Dabi. I’ve never heard him so angry before. I tug on the two to turn me around. They did. But weren’t happy about it if anything their frowns go by. I felt their tails wrap around my lower back. “Oh, I’m SO sorry for accidentally stepping into one of your damn traps! You know I always take this route!”
“I’ve been here longer than you. You should know your damn place.” I was angry now. “MY place!? Who’s the one using illegal traps? Who’s the one nearly trespassing on someone’s property? Who’s the one hunting animals when it’s not even the season!? Who’s the one who keeps killing my animals? No wonder the previous person moved out! They didn’t want to deal with you, you sad excuse for a hunter! You give hunters a bad name!”
“Tch, that’s fine by me. They’re just animals. Be lucky I’m not one to hunt stupid people. Same with your damn freak bodyguards. Did you have to kiss their asses just for them to want to be around you?” He looks at Hizashi’s still twitching ears. “And what’s with keeping that disgusting bullshit? Are you wanting to be hunted or something?”
He was about to continue with more than likely another insult, but Hizashi straight up decks him in the face. Miraculously, it didn’t knock him out. He went to try to hit Hizashi back, but Shouta stepped in instead and Hizashi wrapped his other arm around me for more balance. The two share a quick look. Shouta dodges a hit that Dabi tries to throw. Shouta sees something that makes him grow a giant smile, it feels like a rather sadistic smile. I can swear he sees the trap.
Hizashi puts his tail around me again and turns me around back towards the direction of their house. There was sounds of a struggle behind me, but Hizashi wouldn’t let me turn around to look. “Don’t worry too much about Sho, he’ll be fine! He’s just showin’ that dude a hard time.”
“If you say so…” I reply, unsure from the face he had earlier. There was the faint familiar sound of a trap closing as we were a ways away. It didn’t take long for Shouta to catch up. “He can handle the suffering animals have gone through. He can open it himself if he’s desperate enough.” I was horrified. Yeah, he kinda deserves it, but he doesn’t have anything to pry it open if he can’t do it himself.
“Don’t think too much about it! It’s just a little payback. Like ya said, he shouldn't have those in the first place!”
“True, but-”
“Don’t think about it.” Shouta cuts in, bringing his arm around me again. In my distracted state, I didn’t notice their log cabin until it was up close. We enter the house which has the smell of one of my favorite foods wafting through it. They set me down on the loveseat.
I pull my pant leg up to show a massive bruise already forming where my leg was caught. “That’s going to need a lot of ice.” I joke. Neither of them laugh. They go to leave the room, probably to the kitchen. I go to stand up. “I can’t just sit idle in the living room, at least let me come into the kitchen with you two.”
Shouta glares and comes close to me. “No. We’ll get you ice and the food we made.”
That’s rather odd. “Why shouldn’t we just eat in the kitchen?” They stayed quiet as they share a glance. I didn’t get even an inch farther from the couch before Shouta grabs both my shoulders and pushes me to sit on the couch. “Sit.” His harsh tone scares me into complying. I’m feeling more and more like something is wrong with these two.
Hizashi immediately picks up on my expression. “Aw, don’t worry about him! He’s just worried, ya know? We were stuck in those darn things and Sho doesn’t want you to push yourself.” My eyes go to the giant scabs on their arms. Well, the one of Hizashi’s and both of Shouta’s, I guess that’s a pretty traumatizing thing. The scratches and bite marks still healing on me are proof too. He still doesn’t like looking at them.
They go to the kitchen, and come back rather quick with three plates and an ice pack. It’s one of those really nice ones that can wrap with Velcro. Hizashi wraps it around my leg as Shouta passes me my food. Hizashi then grabs a big CD case and gives it to me. Flipping through it, it has many of my favorite movies. I smile at them. “Man, you two got good taste.”
Hizashi lets out a mock gasp of joy. “We have acceptance of the magnificent audience!”
I look at Shouta questioningly. “Is he always like this?” He nods. Hizashi pouts. “Yo, I’m still right here ya know!”
I pretend not to notice, but the giant smile on my face gives it away. “Hm? Did you hear something?” Shouta replies by making his eyes look the other way. Hizashi leans on me. “Y/N!!! Don’t ignore meeee!” I reach over and aggressively rub the top of his head. It nearly makes my plate fall to the floor. Shouta catches it in a rather rushed manner. Guess it would be a pretty annoying mess to clean up. “Oops… Sorry, guess I got carried away…”
They almost seem to have relieved facial expressions from it not dropping. “At least you’re havin’ fun! That’s what it’s all about! Now, let’s pop your favorite movie in!” I hand him the CD of my choice. He plops down on my right as it plays. Shouta does the same on my left. The ads before the movie can play start.
Within the first bite, something seems off. I just… am I getting sick or something? I don’t remember it tasting like this. “Did you guys put something in this? It tastes different.”
“Sorry about that! It does taste a little funny, huh? It was a new spice I wanted to try adding for more flavor. Safe to say I’m not doing that again!”
It didn’t take us long to finish and focus more on the movie. Shouta lays down with his head on my left leg. “Pet me.” I hesitate. It’s rather weird to be petting a human. Or… Something so similar to a human. Hizashi lays on my right leg.
“C’mon, don’t make us beg for it now! We want you to!” I did start petting their heads. Still weird though. Okay, maybe after tonight, I really should cut contact with them. I don’t think I can do the commitment of petting them like this often.
… Why am I suddenly feeling so tired? My hands get a bit more sluggish as the drowsiness gets worse. It’s getting hard to keep my eyes open. Looking around, I notice a few boxes that were attempted to be hidden by Shouta’s side of the couch. “You guys are getting ready to leave already?” I question, voice slightly slurring.
Shouta sighs, “Yeah, something came up. We’re leaving tomorrow.” I was slightly saddened, yet greatly relieved by the news. “Well, I’m definitely going to miss you guys.”
“Sorry little love song, but you’re coming with us!”
“Zashi!”
“What? We might as well tell them.”
… What? Panic settles in rapidly. Shouta grabs my hand petting his head and nuzzles it.
“Fine. If that’s what we’re doing, I’ll also say that man is no more. I made the trap set off on his neck.” I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. He didn’t deserve tha-
“Before you think he didn’t deserve death, did you know he left poison out for your cat? Did you wonder where it was for the past day?” Disbelief and sadness wash over me. Too many things spiraling in my mind at once. “We tried to bring them to the vet and tell you later we took them since they were outside, but it was too late. The poison got into their system,” He nuzzled my hand again. “We will be your pets, just like you’ll be our permanent guest.” My body was already too tired to struggle. I knew I shouldn’t have trusted them. Stupid me not listening to my instinct.
“It will be so fun when you wake up! You’ll be at our real home, and we can always be around each other!” He kisses my hand. “Doesn’t that sound great, our beloved guest?~
It wasn’t a dream, was the first thought in Jay’s mind when he woke up the next morning. He laid in bed, squinting at the shadows on his ceiling created by the sunlight creeping in through the shades on his window. A slew of curses fell from his mouth as memories from the night before flooded his mind. He became increasingly aware of the lingering effects of the liquor as his head pounded and the room seemed to spin around him. The deep desire for a glass of water was the only motivation getting him up and out of bed. He skipped his usual morning coffee, downing a few large glasses of water and painkillers in its place. As bad as managing a hangover at work sounded, nothing seemed worse to him than having to face Hailey. It should have made him relieved to see the feelings he had for her be reciprocated, but it wasn’t enough to ease the pain that came from leaving her all alone with those feelings up in the air.
He dragged himself into work, knowing his hangover was written all over his face. He didn’t care. All he cared about at that point was surviving the day and making sure he and Hailey were okay.
He would have been lying if he said he wasn’t relieved to see her desk empty when he entered the bullpen. He felt like he needed a few more moments to prepare himself before having to face her. He quietly made his way to his desk, slumping in his chair and taking a breather.
“Long night there, Halstead?” Walker asked over the monitor on Jay’s desk. His face scrunched up at the high volume of the man’s voice.
“Would you keep it down,” Jay said with a groan, eliciting a low laugh out of both Walker and Daisy who sat across from him, watching him suffer with amusement.
“Looks like it was a long night for Blondie there too,” Walker called out as his eyes tracked someone over Jay’s shoulder. He didn’t have to turn around to know he was talking about Hailey, but the nickname caught him off guard. She wasn’t big on nicknames, especially one like that. Reluctantly, he turned his head to see her walking in sluggishly as she tried to rub away the tired look in her eyes. She waved Walker and his teasing comments off before settling in her chair the same way Jay had.
“What’d you two get into last night?” Daisy questioned.
“Huh, wha- What do you mean?” Jay stuttered out nervously, the memories of the night before flashing in his mind. Memories so vivid he felt like he could still feel her breath against his face and her touch on his skin.
“What do I mean? I mean, why are you two rolling in here like a bunch of frat boys on a Sunday morning?” Daisy questioned with a laugh. Jay swallowed hard, looking over at Hailey whose eyes met his briefly before darting away.
“Right… that would be a bottle of tequila,” Hailey said plainly before busying herself on her computer. Jay did the same and their two fellow agents took the hint, shrugging off the pair’s avoidance and settling back at their desks. It was obvious she remembered the night before just as clearly as he did, and that made him nervous.
They were assigned a string of robberies that had taken place at a few high-security medical facilities around Midtown. Drake sent the two pairs out to a number of the facilities to interview witnesses and canvas. Jay was happy to be out of the office, but he knew the second the two of them were alone in the car, the awkward tension that existed in the office would only be ten times worse.
They climbed into the car quietly, driving in silence for a few minutes. However, it wasn’t their usual comfortable silence. The silence was deafening and Jay was distracted, something he knew could pose dangers in the field. He knew they had to air things out.
“Hailey, about last night-“ he began before she cut him off.
“Jay, no. It’s fine. We were both… very drunk,” she said with emphasis on the last two words. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have-“ this time Jay cut her off.
“What? No, I’m the one that should be sorry. I didn’t want you to think that I…” his voice trailed off as he shook his head. How did he tell her he wasn’t fleeing because he didn’t have feelings for her, but the direct opposite of that? How did he tell her he wanted nothing more than to kiss her? That being with her was something he dreamt of for years, but not while his body and mind were drowning in tequila? These thoughts flipped through the forefront of his brain as he tried to piece together words he actually wanted to say to her.
“Jay, it’s fine. It’s a new day, we’ve got a pretty pressing case, let’s just focus on that, yeah?” She finally said, using his silence to shut down the conversation completely. He nodded, mentally kicking himself for his inability to put his thoughts into words.
When they arrived at the facility, they interviewed a few of the techs who were present at the time of the robberies. The men came in with rifles, threatening them to open cold storage containers before taking several experimental treatment vials and loading them into transport coolers. They then locked the techs in one of the backrooms before making their exits. The agents asked if there were any other facilities nearby that could be potential targets. The individuals named two companies nearby that would have similar facilities that possibly housed the same vials targeted by the offenders.
Jay and Hailey arrived at the first location, flashing their badges to the front desk worker and asking to be let up to the floor with cold storage. The man refused, insisting the pair must have the wrong place. Jay noticed blood on the collar of the man’s shirt, as well as a rip where a nametag should have been. Something didn’t feel right to him, and he looked over at Hailey to see if she had noticed it too. Her eyes confirmed this, and she pulled out her phone, checking the screen before looking up at Jay.
“Hey, boss got the address wrong. Sorry for the trouble,” she said. Jay nodded and they turned to make their way to the exit. His heart rate picked up as they turned their back to the man. They were vulnerable in that position, and they had no tactical advantage if their hunch was correct. A few steps from the door, Jay heard a click of metal from behind them. It was faint, but before he could even react, a gunshot was going off and Hailey was shoving him behind a large cement pillar to their right.
“Jay, get down!” She yelled as their bodies slammed against the ground and bullets rained down around them.
“You good?” she asked, hovered over him as she drew her weapon.
“Yeah, yeah, good,” he confirmed, trying to catch his breath and reaching for his own weapon.
Hailey called for backup as Jay drew cover fire from around the pillar. He retreated to reload as the two of them stood shoulder to shoulder behind the cover of the barrier.
“On three, cover me, I’m going to make my way to the other side so I can get a better shot,” Jay said to her. She nodded nervously as he started the count down.
He got to the number three, and she began firing at the man, drawing enough cover for Jay to successfully make it to the other side of the lobby with a much clearer shot. Jay got the man in his sights, adjusting slightly for the distance, and fired 3 rounds. Silence filled the lobby as the man fell to the floor with a thud.
“You good?” He called out to Hailey. There was a brief pause.
“Good,” she replied, sending a shock of relief through Jay’s entire body.
The next thing they knew, Walker and Daisy were bursting through the front doors with tact guys behind them.
“You two good?” Daisy called out as her eyes surveyed the room for the two partners.
“Yeah, all good,” Hailey replied as she and Jay made their way to their fellow agents.
“Nothing like a shower of bullets to knock the hangover out of you, am I right?” Walker teased as Hailey and Jay sent him a shared snarl.
Daisy knocked the man in the head jokingly as she handed Hailey and Jay a vest to put on before they made their way up to the higher floors to take down the rest of the offenders. As they secured their vests, Jay’s eyes remained on Hailey, reassuring himself that she was okay after being uncertain just a few minutes prior. Before they headed up the stairs with the rest of the team, he stopped her and pulled her to the side.
“Thank you… for pushing me out of the way back there. Pretty sure you saved my life,” he told her sincerely, as his hand found its way to her arm just below her shoulder. She smiled down at the floor before shaking her head lightly.
“It’s what partners do,” she nodded, bringing a hand to rest over his briefly before walking past him towards the stairs.
With that came a flood of relief. The avoidance, the tension, it all disappeared for a split second with her touch, and he felt like he was finally able to breathe for the first time that day. Despite what happened the night before, they were able to prove that no matter what, they were good together. He knew they still needed to talk. Whether that was just airing out what almost happened the night before or fully putting their feelings out on the table, he wasn’t sure. He was sure, however, that their partnership was unbreakable and no matter what happened, they were always going to be okay.
They followed the team up the stairs to take down the rest of the robbery crew. A shootout and multiple arrests later, they were on their way back to headquarters. On the drive there, it was mostly silent. From the corner of his eye, Jay saw Hailey release her hair from the tight ponytail it was in, shaking her curls loose as they fell to the sides of her head. He looked over briefly before bringing his eyes back to the road. It reminded him of earlier when Walker called her Blondie, and curiosity got the best of him.
“You know, earlier Walker called you Blondie,” he said with a quizzical tone. “I’m surprised he got away with it. If Adam would have ever called you that, he would’ve lost an arm or something,” he half-joked. She stifled a smile and rolled her eyes.
“Yeah, we were at a bar the other night. I was a few drinks deep, and I may have gotten a little too enthusiastic when the band covered Heart of Glass. That and more obvious reasons led to the nickname. I’m not very fond of it, but the more I protest, the more I know he’ll want to use it so… non-reaction is the name of the game,” she told him with a shy smile. He raised his brows with a teasing smile that quickly fell at the thought of the two of them alone at a bar.
“You two, uh, you go out a lot, yeah?” He questioned, despite already feeling certain of her answer.
“A few times, yeah. He’s a good drinking partner when all you want to do is forget about the day and have a little fun. You should come with us sometime, he’ll challenge you to a game of darts and I’d love to see you kick his ass,” she told him with a large smirk.
“Yeah, maybe,” he responded.
The thought of destroying Walker in a game of darts sounded appealing, but he knew he’d never take her up on the offer if he could help it. He could barely take Walker’s flirty looks and comments for Hailey at work, let alone while tipsy in a crowded bar. He knew those feelings weren’t reciprocated from her end, but it was something Jay couldn’t stand to be around regardless.
Once back at headquarters, Jay and Hailey spent hours in interrogation with the men, trying to figure out why they were after the vials and how they knew about them in the first place. By the end of it all, they were able to find out that the leader of the crew had a sick wife. One of her doctors had mentioned an experimental drug treatment that was in the works, but it hadn’t yet hit the market and was only open for trials. His wife was denied entry into the trial, and the more her condition progressed, the more desperate he became. In a support group, he met a man who had recently gotten out of prison with connections to a former robbery crew. Being that they all had loved ones that could benefit from the treatment, the plans for the heists arose.
“I just wanted to save my wife. And those guys? They wanted to save their loved ones too,” the leader revealed to Jay and Hailey in the interrogation room.
“I get that, man. You just went about it the wrong way, and now your wife is going to lose not just the treatment but her husband too,” Jay said before rising from his chair and gathering the file from the table. Hailey was mostly quiet during the final portion of the interrogation, and she silently followed as Jay made his way out of the room.
“This sucks,” she said aloud as soon as the door to the room was closed. Jay questioned her silently, waiting for her to elaborate.
“It’s just… he was doing what he thought he had to do to save his wife, and now he’s probably going to lose her and everything else because of it,” she said in a defeated tone.
“Yeah, but Hailey he broke the law. He tried to cheat the system for his own benefit and hurt innocent people in the process,” he said, a stern look on his face.
“I know, I know, it’s just… Isn’t there some part of you that would want to do the same thing if you were in his position? If it were someone you loved?” she asked him, her eyes looking up at him, melting him in all of the ways only her eyes could.
The question opened something in him. He’d like to think he was strong enough in his morals to have made the right decision in the same situation, but then he thought about his mother. If there were a treatment that could have saved her, he probably would’ve gone to every measure necessary to ensure she got it. Then he thought about the woman before him. If Hailey were the one that needed that treatment, what would he do? He swallowed hard before nodding slowly as he bit the inside of his cheek. She had a point. He looked down at her, her eyes peering up into his, and that urge to tell her how he felt was back. Except, this time it wasn’t driven by a buzz and lowered inhibitions. It was driven by a deep feeling in his chest that seemed to pull his heart to hers. A feeling clearer than anything else in his life.
“Hailey, I think we-“ he began before a deep voice interrupted from behind him.
“Hey, you two! I know you went a little too hard last night, but how about we make it a streak and carry the party on to tonight? Huh? Beers, a game of darts, maybe some billiards?” Walker questioned as he threw an arm around the two of them.
“Uh,” Hailey let out as her gaze remained on Jay with with a look he was guessing to be curiosity surrounding his interrupted sentence.
“What do you say?” Walker asked, turning his head between the two of them as he waited for a response.
“Only if you let me choose the bar this time, that last one reeked of cigarettes. I was sure I got lung cancer just from opening the door,” Hailey finally said with a laugh.
Jay’s mood deflated quickly, and he wriggled out from the man’s hold.
“Uh as much fun as that sounds, I actually have plans tonight,” he lied. Hailey sent him a questioning look as Walker shrugged his shoulders.
“Just the two of us once again, Blondie,” Walker said with a wink that created a sick feeling in Jay’s stomach.
Every time Jay thought he was ready to tell her how he felt, something seemed to stand in the way and discourage him immediately. He was beginning to question whether or not it was worth it. Wondering if all of the roadblocks were just signs from the universe that they were better off as partners. He watched as she walked back to her desk and grabbed her coat, turning to look back at him briefly. It was a lingering look, a glimmer in her eyes he knew all too well. Then, Walker interrupted her to ask if she was ready to go, and the look was gone instantly. Yet, that one look was enough to send every bit of doubt he had right out of his head. As hard as he tried to fight it, he was in love with her. He wasn’t sure when or where, but someday soon he wasn’t going to be able to hold it in. One way or another, he knew they were meant to be together, and in that moment that was enough hope to make him smile through the ache of watching her walk away without him.
