I'm not sure what this says about Baldwin: I know he often tried to escape the label of "Black Author" and the limitations he felt came with that. I, however, am a firm believer that writers cannot escape their identities. It felt so raw, so real. After I read it, I obsessed over Baldwin's Wikipedia page, then google, before getting pay-walled out of a juicy New Yorker article -- all trying to find out more about Baldwin's love life, knowing that Giovanni and David's relationship must have been based on a real person. He is entirely emotionally closed off, constantly lying and looking down on others, selfish, alcoholic, lost, without love or purpose. Your addiction, whatever that may be, doesn't define you. Your mental health struggles, do not define you. Any illness, does NOT define you. Could you imagine if I walked around introducing myself as Sam the anxiety-ridden epileptic? It's stupid. That's not who I am. The point is, there is so much more to you all. You're artists, you're mothers, you're lovers, you're fathers, you're empaths that feel emotions around you and want to help and save others, and you're the hardest working people I've ever met. Your resilience baffles me. I wanted to share a couple quotes with you (I know, typical Sam here!) but they really resonated with me and I thought they'd maybe spark something within all of you.

(Its by Adam j. Kurtz for those of you interested) But the important part is, my eyes began to fill with tears as I thought how applicable this is to you all but how I wouldn't be able to share it. So I truly hope this finds you well.

What's a "creative?" Kurtz says it is "you. A person who defines themselves, in some way, by their creative passion or profession." I always told you guys that in order to truly seek recovery and happiness in your life, you must find your passion. Kurtz says there are 8 rules that every creative should know. I won't list every one (because some aren't applicable at all) and I won't go into utter detail on each one but I did want to share some important messages.

1. It's magical, not magic: essentially- you're not just going to be born with this happiness or creativity or passion- you have to tap into this energy to make something special of your life. That comes with hard work (and maybe a little bit of luck)

2. You are kind of an idiot (his words, not mine, but totally right)- he says "nobody knows what the fuck they are doing and that's totally okay." He also continues on to say that we learn things as we encounter them and we are consistently learning.

3. Failure actually IS an option. Remember when I said, "fail, and then fail again"? Here's what it means- " failure is actually one of the two options in mostly any scenario. So instead of lying to yourself about the possibilities, choose instead to brace yourself for any outcome and be ready to learn from the experience. Your (creative) life is a journey and every step (no matter what that step is), is actually you moving forward."

4. LABELS WILL KILL YOU- the whole, "name, DOC" thing is beneficial maybe for like a week. But move on. Do not let it define you. Please remember your worth. There is so much more to you. I know it. I've seen it. The author says when it comes to finding a passion, "you may feel tremendous pressure to assign yourself a label," but essentially by "branding ourselves" into a single role or with a set label- we limit possibilities that "may come as you grow."

There's much more but I wanted to share those with you. I'll continue to send letters and quotes with the hopes that they find you. I truly want you all to know how important you are. You taught me so much and I'll carry that with me forever. (I know a few of you may be rolling your eyes) Fine. It's cliche. I know. But it doesn't make it any less true.

I am so used to seeing causes started on Twitter and having millions of mentions a few days later that all the hard work of the past seems like a crazy task to complete.  Even today when assigned groups, at a much smaller scale, sometimes I get into a group chat with my team and we collaborate on a cloud-based system like Google docs to complete an assignment without ever actually needing to be in the same room.  Safe to say times have really changed. 

3) If I were to do a TED Talk like this one I guess I would just have to do it very much like Zeynep did and while I acknowledge the importance of social media in the world today and movements I would have to say it just gets a lot more personal and real when you organize them like they used to be.  It is just very hard to replace face-to-face communication with important topics and too much collaboration without centralization can sometimes be a bad thing.
