Listen. I grew up in the middle of nowhere. There was nothing for a kid to do but run around outside (to be fair, there wasn’t much for adults to do either, but that’s not the point).
Anyways, I spent my entire childhood sprinting through the forests and fields, tall grass whipping at my shins, brambles sticking in my shorts. There was a certainty there. You pick up a stick and say it’s a sword, it’s not even imagination it’s just a statement of fact. You can run as fast as the wind, nothing can catch you, and you won’t fall (which makes it all the more surprising when you do, because you were so certain it wouldn’t happen that you hadn’t even considered what it would be like if you did).
I’ve never seen a piece of media capture that feeling as perfectly as the children’s adventure.
"If I'm Not Good" | Worlds Beyond Number Animation
SPOILERS FOR EPISODE 22 of @worldsbeyondpod's "The Wizard The Witch and the Wild One"
I noticed another parallel to the Children's Adventure in the latest WBN episode, and I decided to put far too much effort into making it everybody else's problem.
Bro finishing the children's adventure in the lounge of a cruise ship surrounded by people was not my smartest decision, I'm trying to weep silently over here and not let anyone know. Suvi my love, my precocious child, my heart Breaks for her at least she has Steel 😭😭😭😭
So I'm finally diving in to Worlds Beyond Number starting with the Children's Adventure and you'll never convince me that Brennan himself isn't a being from another realm because the way he describes Eursulon's wonder and confusion in the world is gorgeous.
finally got my paycheck and therefore subscribed to the Worlds Beyond Number patreon and nothing is more narratively absurd and delightful than going from full-tilt apocalypse movie to studio ghibli cottage to Lord of the Rings and then going "And they're babies!"
So I’m listening to the beginning of the children’s adventure and I had a thought - Suvi, Stone, Soft, Steel - all S names. I don’t know how to articulate the next thought, and it could very well just be a coincidence, but I feel like there’s something there, and it has to do with family and comfort and connection?
Especially with the way Brennan phrases the question - not what are their names, but what is the word you associate with them. Like the S sound is associated with family for Suvi, I guess is what I’m getting at? The only one without an S name is also the only one who isn’t named by Suvi.
Listening to WBN episode 11 and then listening to the Children’s Adventure, I can’t help but draw parallels. Suvi’s very first interaction with Grandmother Wren has a hesitant Suvi holding a biscuit, and Grandmother Wren explicitly tells her, “Anything that I give to you is yours in the moment of the giving. That cookie is yours, Suvi, and you may do with it as your heart desires.” And now Steel comes in booming, “What exactly is yours? Because I don’t have anything that belongs to me. I have the tools of the citadel, and it’s a privilege to wield them.”
The clashing philosophies of self-ownership and autonomy just got to me okay?
Suvi's nervous ticking fingers counting and memorising make me want to cry i used to do that as a kid and still do when im nervous.. kids who want to understand the world through reading and memorising and organising until it makes sense. until it sticks. fingers moving rhythmically trying to tap into something important...
