“I've Always Been Crazy”
The Number One title track to the Number One album ol’ Waylon gave us in 1978. Arguably his last great album, Waylon’s love of cocaine started to get on top of him about this time. The famous bust featured in “Don’t You Think This Outlaw Bit’s Done Got Out Of Hand” took place during these sessions, when DEA agents from New York City swooped down on Waylon and the band during recordings. Drummer Richie Albright managed to flush the offending booger sugar down the toilet and would later joke he lowered the water pressure in Nashville by 75%.
He tells stories of leaving cars all over Nashville because he’d be so high that he’d forget where he was and just call someone to come get him. I read somewhere he was doing fifteen grand a day on the Columbia Dancing Dust at one point. His records got spottier and lost their front-to-back quality but he kept having hits. In 1980, he became a beloved of GenXers all over America as “The Ballader” singing the theme song to “The Dukes Of Hazard.” Yes, you’re hearing it now in your head.
He eventually cleaned up with the help of his wife Jessie Colter, herself a top-shelf country singer. He became one of country music’s rascally old pappaws and kept having hits on into the ‘90s. He managed to get some of his flowers before he left this world in 2002.

Just found out we lost another good one today, Mr. Richie Albright, long time drummer for Waylon Jennings. Such a nice guy. Mr. Albright is the gentleman standing next to me that isn’t Shooter, pictured here with the rest of Waymore’s Outlaws. I actually sent this picture to Billy Joe Shaver shortly after it was taken. The house band up there is out of control. R.I.P. https://www.instagram.com/p/CLIpy1LDCgA/?igshid=w7w7ex63taav
