Orange-cheeked Waxbill. Every time I see these, they're in groups of 30-60, filling the air with a chorus of cute little beeps.

February 14, 2024 - Red-winged Pytilia (Pytilia phoenicoptera) Found in a patchy range across central Africa, these waxbills live in savannas, shrublands, and grasslands. Foraging mostly on the ground alone or in pairs and sometimes joining mixed-species flocks, they feed on grass seeds and termites. They build ball-shaped nests with side entrances in bushes from grass stems and seed heads, lined with feathers and dry grass. Females usually lay clutches of three or four eggs.

My little zeeba finch, Bruce, is 8 years old this month! He's a smart, funny, vocal guy who enjoys nest-building, afternoon naps, and prefers the company of other male birds. His mate Walt sadly passed and it's been a challenge finding him a new partner, so he's currently paired up with Chickenbutt the male lavender waxbill who is okay being preening pals and snuggle buddies at naptime but is not himself gay.

Here's Bruce and Chickenbutt getting ready for a midday siesta.

Trick or treat!! I wanna be assigned a birdie too hehe

Yes, you definitely do! Here's an Orange-cheeked Waxbill that I banded on Saipan, CNMI in 2010. These guys are non-native - thought to have arrived via released caged birds brought to the island by foreign workers hired by US-run companies like the GAP and Tommy Hilfiger and more, who up until 2008 operated sweatshops on the island so that they could sell clothing that said "made in the USA" on their tags but for cheaper labor than in the states. Anyway, migrant workers from places like Bangladesh and China would often release a bird on arrival as a symbol of their hopes for freedom and a steady-paying job, and this species in particular was commonly used for this because they're cheaply acquired back in Asia.
Anyway, there are a lot of them now on Saipan. Jury is out if they're actually a problem or not. They're pretty cute, and don't seem to compete with native species for resources, so... Maybe sometimes it's not all bad news after all.

Birbfest Day 19: Violet-eared Waxbill
Birbfest Day 20: White Throated Magpie Jay
Proof that no matter how many bird drawing challenges I join there are always exciting new birds for me to learn about for the very first time.
That magpie jay with its little headdress is such a cool looking fellow! I think my enthusiasm carried into the sketch a little bit, he turned out cute :)
