47. touching their elbow to get their attention

They keep it pretty professional at work. Neither one of them are that big on PDA, or at least, they don't like PDA more than they like their working reputations.

But there are little things. Things Athena wouldn't appreciate from anyone else. Things that stand as reminders that they aren't just colleagues - that when she takes her uniform off at the end of the day, when she drives home, he'll be there waiting for her.

Tonight she's first on the scene of an apartment fire (not one that seems like it'll be that bad, thankfully). She's coordinating getting roads blocked off, caught up in the sirens already going, which is what she blames for the fact that she doesn't know the 118 are on the scene until there's a hand at her elbow.

Then, she knows who it'll be before she looks.

"Where are we setting up, Sergeant?" Bobby asks.

Someone who didn't know either of them probably wouldn't be able to tell they were married, maybe not even that they knew each other beyond work. They wouldn't know the way her voice is a hair softer with Bobby, or that the way he's smiling at her is different from how he'd greet anyone else in this position.

"The 136 are in charge. They're set up around the southeast corner," she says, gesturing to one side.

He nods and turns around. "Alright team, southeast corner, let's go."

The 118 make in that direction. As they do, she calls, "Be safe!"

"You too!" he replies.

And that's enough for now. Way more than enough, really. She turns back to what she was doing, knowing that more of that will be waiting at home.

4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year?

ough oh absolutely. My uncle gave me a book by William Maxwell, an author (and longtime fiction editor of The New Yorker) I'd never heard of, and I was instantly sold on him after one novel. I've read two works of his by now, They Came Like Swallows and So Long, See You Tomorrow, and I have a few more on my list that I'd like to read as well... And lowkey he's becoming a big feature of my thesis as it develops. He writes a lot of semi-autobiographical works, which is right up my alley!

5. What genre did you read most of?

This ones harder to answer,, because I think I bounce around a lot. I'd say just by circumstance, I read the most queer romance/new adult this year. After graduating I was really burnt out and hadn't read in a very long time, so when I started trying to get back into the habit of reading a few months ago, I made myself a queue of queer romance novels cause I figured they'd be most amenable to getting excited about reading again. It worked! They were always really easy to engage with and get invested in, and I was able to pick up a whole bunch of other genres once again after :)) My favorites were You Should Be So Lucky by Cat Sebastian (thanks theo), The Pairing by Casey McQuiston, and Less by Andrew Sean Greer (which is certainly not new adult, but is VERY queer, so I'm counting it because I absolutely adored it)

9. Did you get into any new genres?

I HAVE NEVER BEEN A ROMANCE GUY SO IMAGINE MY SURPRISE WHEN I GOT REALLY INTO IT THIS YEAR. i have also never been a historical fiction guy so my foray into historical romance caught me REALLY off guard. it's been super fun though shoutout to all of emily henry's books & also the seven year slip & also the perfect crimes of marian hayes

25. What reading goals do you have for next year?

i have a lot of manga series i have been putting off starting / continuing for a while, & i want to eat through those very badly. otherwise i don't have any particular goals!! my reading stats for this year are frankly insane and i cannot imagine meeting them again or even trying to

2. Did you reread anything? What?

I mentioned before I don't track these but by my memory:

I reread Pride and Prejudice as I do every year because I believe in love. Reread Howl's Moving Castle at one point, and reread parts of Scum Villain's Self Saving System (Vol 4) and Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Vol 4 and 5) because of the official English translations release. (I'm pretty sure I read those at the beginning of this year?) (Don't know if those are 100% rereads because the translations I had read before were different and lower in quality, but, y'know.)

Also I read all of the Murderbot Diaries for the first time this year, and then reread them a few months later.

Generally speaking, other than P&P, I am not a big rereader. My brain just doesn't stick on anything that it thinks it already knows what happens next.

I want to try a Percy Jackson reread for nostalgia and I read those books as they were being published i.e. almost 20 years ago for the oldest ones, and even then I'm not sure if I'll be able to do it.

5. What genre did you read the most of?

Sci-Fi and Fantasy is overwhelmingly the winner here. It will always be the winner with me I'm predictable as hell.

17. Did any books surprise you with how good they were?

My initial impulse is no, but if I had to say something, I thought I would struggle more with A Memory Called Empire than I did, simply because it's a big thick scifi book and those often tend to intimidate me with too much worldbuilding. But it was actually super engaging throughout, including all the worldbuilding and politics, even without me in the perfect focused headspace.

hi omg i love you i’d Love to tell u abt pavlove. it’s at least 20% on the playlist bc of the title bc as we all know buck is a man who is a dog. he’s like if a guy was a firehouse dog this is Known, right. and pavlove is about 1. being invisible 2. imo also about trying to find yourself in who you are to other people which is The quintessential buck thing.

if i was gonna write a buck pavlove fic it might be about him deliberately either avoiding people or trying to make himself less of an inconvenience . inspired by the “i want to make you as lonely as me” stuff in pavlove. just slowly trying to step out of peoples lives so they don’t have to worry abt him. and then obviously being told by the ppl who love him that that’s Stupid and they still like him when he’s annoying or high maintenance. either that or like. buck tries casual dating again and realizes it makes him feel like shit and then has a friends to fiancés thing with eddie maybe.

10. What work was the quickest to write?

Probably at the boundary - some of that is because it's not even 1000 words long, but it was also a case of knowing exactly what beats I wanted to hit and just needing to get to them. Plus I got to mess around with Shinto mythology, which I always enjoy doing.

17. Your favorite character to write this year?

This one might actually be Shez Fireemblem! They have a distinct voice that lends itself to silly asides, and of course they're being haunted by a nonbinary ghost who they can argue with in the middle of their narration, which is a lot of fun. Shout out Shez zine for letting me put them in some more situations.

25. Did you receive any gifts this year?

I got so many good gifts this year thanks to the wide variety of exchanges I signed up for. I especially want to shout out this cross stitch chart that will make me get out my needles for the first time in like a year, this post-canon Kaiba bros fic that has me again and always adopting Noah, and this choose-your-own adventure which captured Justine's voice insanely well. (Yes three of these are from FIAB. That's because it rules.)

9 - listening to the other's heartbeat

"Okay, hold still." Like Avery needs the instructions. It's pretty intuitive to begin with, holding still while the nurse holds the stethoscope to your chest, but Avery especially knows what to do. Really, it's just prattle, just a script Tristan has in his head for how a physical goes.

The start of the cruise season means physicals for the staff. The two of them have done what feels like a hundred thousand of them in the past week. They're another stop on everyone's to-do list, in between sessions of setting up deck chairs or cleaning showers or learning new menu items. But staff includes them, too.

He and Avery have fallen into a habit over the years. They know their way around the annual ship setup. Now, it barely needs to be spoken. Parts of the physical they do for themselves, but the ones more easily done with help they do quickly for each other.

It's a quiet morning. They'd both come in a hair early. Avery had wordlessly hopped up on the exam table, travel mug of coffee still in her hand, and Tristan had gotten down to it.

Really, it's not that much different from anyone else. He's just doing his job, composed and professional as ever. A little less formal, maybe, but he's already a little lower key with the staff than he would be with a guest. Mostly, though, he slips into the script and the rote motions of it - eyes, ears, blood pressure. A hundred thousand of them, blah blah.

But this-

This part is just a little different. He can't help but slip out of it a little. Not with most people (God knows he's desensitized to being in strangers' personal space), but with Avery. It's a little more difficult to forget that it's her. Her, quiet and expectant, faint warmth coming off of her as he holds the stethoscope to her chest.

A steady beating fills his ears. Something rises in him, silly easy affection. Appreciation for this fist sized muscle and the way it keeps her alive. Heart rate sounds good is the next line in his script. What comes out instead is, "There you are."

Avery exhales, the faintest, barest gesture towards a laugh. "There I am," she flatly agrees.

He needs to focus. "Deep breath." Another instruction she definitely doesn't need.

She breathes deep. He hears the easy whoosh in and out, and does not think about how those organs facilitate her almost laughing at the things he does. "Sounds good," he says, straightening and pulling down the stethoscope.

"Well that's good news," Avery replies, already jumping from the table. "I don't know how you all would survive without me if I had to stay at port because of horrible lung damage."

"Nor do I." He finishes scribbling things onto her notes, then signs the required form. "Congratulations, you passed."

"Wonderful." She gestures to the exam table as she takes another sip from her travel mug, then turns to wash her hands. "Your turn."

There are protocols to follow after calls like this so Bobby follows them as quickly as he can and then goes to find Buck. He checks the bunk room and the lounge upstairs, but only cursorily. Hen had made eye contact with him over Buck’s shoulder as she’d said “Let’s get some air,” her hand gently on his arm and Chimney on his other side. The roof, then. He grabs a water bottle from the kitchen on the way there, a granola bar. Something in your stomach. Can’t fix everything, but. Whatever. Can’t hurt.

His boots clang against the metal stairs. Intentionally, mostly. It’s hard to be sneaky here but he could manage if he tried. He figures he’ll give them some warning. Door creaks, too. Maybe he should get somebody to fix that. Maybe he should get new lawn chairs. The ones they have are looking a little rusty, a little sun bleached, a little sad. Buck is sitting in one of the farthest ones, Hen by his side, Chimney sitting opposite. Even across the roof Bobby can see his shoulders shake.
