FanFic Pipe Book Press
In 2022, I prototyped an affordable nipping press using black steel pipe fittings. The challenge: To make something under $100, compact, portable, and easy to make without electric tools.
I'm sharing the supply list here (under the cut) with updated thoughts and notes.
Please note that when I've linked to Amazon in this post, I'm using an affiliate link.
Basic Materials
QTY 1 - Press Screw 2 - ½ pipe Mini Flanges 2 - ½ pipe 90° elbow fittings 2 - ½ pipe 4in nipples 2 - ½ pipe 6in nipples 2 - 1x½ pipe hex bushing reducer 1 - 1x1 pipe cross tee 1 - Large hardwood board at least 16"x6" 1 - Smaller hardwood board ~ 9-10" across and at least 6" wide 8 - #8x¾ flat head wood screws
Press Screw The press screw is the crank/long screw in the middle of the nipping press. As of this writing, the most affordable press screws are the one by Pony Jorgenson or the one by ShopFox. For just a little bit more, McMaster Carr sells a beautiful stainless steel hole mount screw clamp from Taiwan.
½ pipe parts These form the bones of this book press. Pipe fittings are designed to be resistant to water pressure and are easy to assemble. You can find some at your local hardware store (cheaper) or order on Amazon. You have the option to use basic black carbon steel pipe or go fancier by using stainless steel. This will likely run you between $40-$65.
Wood & Screws You'll want a hardwood (like Oak, Birch, Walnut, etc.) not a softwood (pine or basswood) for this project to prevent warping. A strong plywood such as baltic birch may work as well. Most hardware stores will cut wood to size for you. The screws are for attaching the pipe to the wood--but, depending on how you want to engineer the press, you could also use bolts.
Additional Supplies
Sandpaper in various grades
Sealant for the pipes (especially if you use pipe that sheds carbon, so you don't stain your books. I used clear coat, you can look into shellac and other finishes that work for you.)
Wood Finish (I used tung oil, you have so many options)
Screwdriver, Hand Drill, or Electric drill
Mallet (if you want to pound the lead screw into the cross pipe
Epoxy to glue the lead screw into the cross, or to affix the base of the screw to the wood.
Optional Upgrades
Use a hole saw to drill through the wood and a forstner bit the size of the flange to run the flange through the wood from the bottom. That way, pressure isn't put on the wood screws and the press will last longer.
Use Rub N' Buff to decorate the press
Use longer nipples, such as 8" or 10" nipples, instead of the 6" to get more daylight.
This press is sized for fanfic binders, but if you want a bigger one you can size up the pipes.
If you can afford thicker wood, especially for the base, you may want to opt for 8/4 wood instead of 4/4 wood.
Happy crafting! Let me know how things go, and if you end up making one, I'd love to see a picture.

dw i AM slowly returning to my kylar roots...imagine kylar walking in on you wearing his hoodie...i think he would scream and faint and die. he would be so torn between wanting you to keep it forever bc you look so cute and wearing his clothes in public would affirm that you belong to him but also wanting it back so he can smell it and breathe in your scent (and not do nefarious things with it)
hngnnggg yeah im glad ur coming back to ur kylar roots... i missed you nica please come rave about kylar's cock with me again :'(
uuuggghhh especially if you make it out to be something innocent like you spending the night at his house (bestie kylar sleepover....) and it gets really cold!!!
gen! reader and m! kylar utc <3
Kylar hates the feeling of water against his skin. It never really sticks, or cleans anything. His skin is overly sensitive, flaring up against his will if he scrubs too hard or uses any scented soaps. He's given up on making himself attractive to others, and yet—
He's hiding in the bathroom while you're cuddled up in his bed.
He thought he'd be all over you, panting and drooling, lapping at your lips until they parted just enough that he could taste you. Maybe you'd face him, breathing in his exhales and sharing oxygen with one another until you fell asleep. Or... Maybe you'd face away from him, letting him guard you where you're most vulnerable, baring yourself in a way that you've never let anyone else see you. He'd be unable to resist you, then. He'd drool onto your hair, mindlessly grinding his cock against you until you wake. You'd help him out, as graceful and kind as you are—you'd turn to face him, burying your face in his neck and clinging so tight that his chest would burn. Not from legs wrapped so tightly around his waist. Only from the sheer love and affection you're spoiling him with—something he hasn't felt in so long.
The faucet before him groans, on the brink of filling up the sink. Kylar has the mind to turn it off before his whole body locks up.
"Ky-Ky? Are you okay...?"
He hears your sweetened tone from beyond the bathroom door, your knuckles gently rapping at the wood to gain his attention. So cute. Of course you'd check if he's okay! He stumbles to the door, fumbling with the lock as his wet hands slip against the door handle. You're probably so lonely without him! He's upset with himself for losing track of time and leaving you alone in bed when the two of you could've been snuggled up against one another. He finally unlatches the door, breathing heavy at the prospect of you being just behind the thin plywood.
The door slams open and Kylar's smile falls from his face.
You're now wearing a hoodie. He's kind of disappointed that he won't be able to touch as much of your skin. The hoodie you're wearing looks worn. It's fraying at the sleeves, stained various different colours at it's front, he's never actually seen you wear it before so it can't possibly be new—
His hoodie.
You're wearing his hoodie.
You fiddle with the sleeves as you speak, shyly looking at your feet while he gapes at you. "Sorry... It got cold while you were in the bathroom. I can take it off if you want?"
You look so cute. So very, very cute that Kylar can only stare at you, open-mouthed. He thinks about what it'd imply if you started wearing his clothes at school—no, even better if you just wore his clothes entirely—maybe he should offer you a pair of his sweatpants too, in case your legs get cold. He thinks about it, but then looks at the deliciously smooth skin of your thighs, and decides against it.
Kylar shakes his head quickly, commiting the image of you in his hoodie to memory. "N-No! It's fine, um, you can raid my whole wardrobe if you like... Haha..."
Kylar makes a note to start stealing more of your hoodies and long-sleeved shirts, just so he can see you in more of his.
You stare at him for another second, smiling at the cute expression on his face. Then your smile turns upside down into a confused pout. "Why's your face all wet?"
Kylar blushes choking on his own embarrassment, tugging you back to bed. "I brushed my teeth," He lies, tucking you in as he crawls in beside you, covering the two of you with a worn-out sheet. He purposefully hid the other thicker sheets underneath his bed so the two of you had no choice but to cuddle for warmth tonight. He smiles as you roll over, bidding him a quick goodnight before shuffling your rear painfully close to his crotch. You grab one of his arms, pulling it over you before yawning softly and closing your eyes.
"Goodnight, my love." He mumbles into your hair, voice addled with sleepiness.
He leans forward, burying his face in your hair and the soft hood of his hoodie. You smell good on your own, but you smell even better mixed with the scent of him. Like he's claimed you.

This is for that au roulette thing i reblogged uhh yesterday
AU: Community theatre
Barry's in hell. He died in a horrific car crash and everything that's happened in the last hour has been the universe punishing him for stealing Alex J's cupcake on the last day of 3rd grade. This is the only explanation.
It couldn't possibly be because he's smitten for a very pretty girl he's known only since he forced himself to socialise and volunteered to do lights at the city theatre. How long has it been? Three weeks? Twenty years? Fifteen minutes?
But she caught him singing to himself and convinced him to sing to her for real. Then when the guy playing the titular character turned out to be an absolute jerkwad, he was shoved into an audition room and now he's sitting in a chair trying not to cringe as Taako paper machés half his face.
Why they decided to do Phantom of the Opera, Barry will never understand. Their funding is about 20 dollars and a paperclip, but the things Magnus can rig up with some plywood and a quick trip to Home Depot are truly magical.
The dressing room door opens and in the mirror he sees Lup come up behind him, very obviously suppressing a smile.
"You're laughing at me," he deadpans.
"No I'm not!" She looks offended at the notion. "It just looks silly before the mask is painted."
He chances a look at himself, and she's not wrong. There's some glue-water dripping down his chin, he has a makeshift cotton-ball-and-medical-tape eyepatch, and there's a full colour Garfield comic across his forehead. "I can't believe I agreed to this."
"You'll do great."
He resists the urge to shake his head as Taako puts another strip of paper on his face. Moving too much is what got him stuck with Garfield. "I haven't been on a stage since I was thirteen. I'm a backstage kind of guy."
"Who can sing like a leading man."
His face flushes, and even with his half vision he can see Taako roll his eyes. "I'm just glad Greg's finally fucked off," he says. "That guy was getting way too into it."
Barry frowns. "Really? How?"
Taako snorts. "You know that guy who played the joker who left, like, gross shit on people's doorsteps?"
"Nnnnno? I'm not really a celebrities kinda guy."
Taako covers up the Garfield strip with the last of the newspaper (probably because he knows Lucretia would throw a paintbrush at him if she had to cover a full colour comic with the theatre's mediocre paint) and starts washing his hands. "Well some dude was being a freak about playing the joker cause he's "method" and Greg was also being a freak."
"It was like he was trying to be the phantom of this theatre," Lup says, "but he didn't seem to realise it doesn't work when we all know he's doing it."
"Well, I, uh," Barry clears his throat, "I promise I won't be a freak? But, you know, who's gonna do lights now? I mean I-"
"Magnus," Taako says, flicking the water off his hands.
"He couldn't take over the phantom?"
Taako barks a laugh. "Trust me, you do not want to hear Maggie sing."
"He's not that bad," Lup defends.
"He's not that good either. He's better off sticking to Shakespeare and woodworking."
Barry's eyebrows raise. "Shakespeare?"
"Face," Taako scolds. Barry drops his surprise back to neutral. "But yeah, the guy can't sing for shit, and he won't be acting in any blockbusters any time soon, but jeezums can he recite a soliloquy."
"I can actually understand ol' Willy Shakes when Magnus does it," Lup says. "He was Macbeth last year."
"Oh, I remember that!" Barry says, "my mom and I came, and afterwards she kept saying how-"
He's cut off by loud, thundering steps out in the hallway. Somewhere outside the door a booming voice shouts, "TO BE, OR NOT TO BE," the door's thrown open and reveals Magnus, "THAT is the question."
The three of them stare at him, bewildered. He smiles, "I heard someone say Shakespeare?"

Tell me something I don't know --
So, yeah, tell me something you know that is not common knowledge!
I'll start with two things.
First, commercial airliners frequently take off too heavy to land safely. The plane is full of fuel for the flight, obviously, and fuel weighs a lot. Jet fuel weighs about 7 pounds per gallon. A Boeing 800 class has a fuel capacity of around 6800 gallons, which will weigh roughly 45,000 pounds. A fully loaded airliner often has so much fuel on board that, if an emergency were to occur that requires the plane to land within the first 30-120 minutes, the weight of the aircraft will crush the landing gear and underside of the plane. Also, the fuel tanks are located inside the wings, and the weight of the fuel will tear the wings off. Jet fuel will violently eject and might engulf the aircraft in flames. HOWEVER. Airliners in this emergency situation engage in "fuel dumping," which is exactly what you think it is. They open the tanks and pour liquid jet fuel out of the plane and onto ... whatever is underneath. Jet fuel rains from the sky. This is obviously a problem, yes, but if it makes the aircraft light enough to land without an inferno? It's considered a win.
Second, wood products today really do suck compared to wood from 50 or more years ago, it's not your imagination, they just suck. SORT OF. Here's the thing -- old growth wood is denser than younger trees. Older furniture, crown moldings, floors, built-ins, kitchen spoons, anything that was made from older trees, the wood is denser. It resists water more easily, it is better able to resist mold, it doesn't crack and split as much. It is heavier, it has that solid feel we associate with quality. Newer wood products are made from trees that are more easily farmed, so you have your pines, aspens, and other trees that grow fast and relatively straight up. These trees are softer, lighter, and the wood is less able to resist water. They feel cheaper and they degrade faster. HOWEVER. there are a number of wood-products made from these trees that are great. Pressed- and particle- based wood products have vastly improved in the last ten years. This ain't your father's plywood anymore. These take advantage of the fast, cheap, wood farms and manufacture real wood products that are imbued with glues and adherents that recreate the density of old growth trees. Now, you don't get the gorgeous grain that older wood has, obviously. These products need to be painted, or they need a veneer. But keep an eye out for them when you are considering re-flooring a room or replacing a window treatment.

I've been thinking about old railway uniforms, and come to the conclusion that the textiles could be INTERESTING in a steampunk world.
If steam power is widespread and commonplace, that means that there's going to be plenty of steam piping and/or boilers around. A lot of it would probably be insulated for safety and efficiency, but that still probably means that a significant part of the population has to work around HOT steam-powered equipment fairly often. I don't think that EVERYONE would necessarily be going around in protective double denim, but I think there'd just be less demand for fabrics with worse heat resistance.
That probably means that textile innovation wouldn't focus so hard on inventing New materials; but rather on improving natural fabrics. With a focus on mechanical innovation, I think your steampunk inventor would have an ENORMOUS array of linkages available to them - for converting a continuous mechanical input to various complicated and adjustable movement patterns. I think that having a lot more workers in hot environments would also lead to wide-spread use of mechanical refrigeration.
I've seen a few videos of industrial fabric-handling machines - they seem to have a Lot spiky metal fingers making repetitive movements. I think a steampunk world would be GREAT at making those little fingers do different, interesting patterns of movement! I recently saw a Matt Parker video about a continuous lattice of 7 different directions of pencil, and there was a cool animation of its cross-section. Imagine the funky patterns you could weave with thread going in more than 2 directions - either coplanar with eachother or in 3d space. All the cool decorative patterns woodworkers can do with plywood and veneer - imagine that with thread!
One of the reasons that a lot of tradespeople wore denim was because the pattern of the fabric obscured oil and grease stains. Could you achieve the same effect with the above funky patterns if they were dense enough? SO many workwear fashion options. And if you've got hot steam on tap as well as decent refrigeration - heat treatment would be easy to incorporate. What sort of interesting features would they be heat-setting into their clothes?
And if you want to build any sort of articulated machine/robot with steam as the power source; you need something to carry that steam - a flexible, high-pressure, heat resistant pipe. That sounds like a braided hose to me - and if you're using more colourful metals than stainless steel, your steam plumbing could get COLOURFUL! You know how we have braided hoses with a red or blue strand for hot or cold water? JUST IMAGINE the industry standard colour coding schemes for different temperatures, pressures, and phases of various fluids they could have!
Colour coded flexible pressure hose reminds me of an electrical system - I wonder how a steampunk world would do mechanical calculation? Did someone say Convoluted Fluid Based Computers?? With advances in textiles, hoses, and ropes - surely at some point they'd invent wire or fibre-wrapped pressure vessels! (Just think what they'd do with carbon fibre!) A society with (admittedly probably building-sized) computers that's used to dealing with high-pressure fluids - SURELY they'd invent jet propulsion? Perhaps not for rockets or aircraft - imagine pressure-jet steampunk ships, submarines even.
Actually where I can see modern-ish chemical rocketry in a steampunk world is in miniature steam generators - either HO bipropellant (your choice of liquid or gaseous) or peroxide monopropellant. A vigorous chemical reaction with hot, fast H2O as the product - sounds like a (rather explosive) portable power source.
Anyways, TLDR i'd LOVE to see what technological innovations a steampunk world would have. What paths they'd go down for research.

Exploring BWP Plywood: Preventing Fungi and Mold Growth
Plywood is a versatile building material used in many construction projects, furniture making, and interior design. However, not all plywood is created equal. When it comes to environments where moisture is a concern, BWP (Boiling Water Proof) plywood stands out. One of the critical reasons for its preference in damp areas is its ability to resist fungi and mold growth. Let's explore the measures BWP plywood manufacturers take to ensure this high level of protection.
Tumblr media
Measures to Prevent Fungi and Mold Growth
Use of Quality Timber:
BWP plywood is made from hardwood, which naturally resists moisture better than softwood. This wood creates a strong base that is less likely to rot or get fungus.
Phenolic Resins:
BWP plywood is made using phenolic resins, which resist water. These resins create a strong seal between the wood layers, stopping water from getting inside the plywood. Without moisture, fungi and molds cannot grow.
Chemical Treatments:
Manufacturers treat BWP plywood with special chemicals that protect it. These chemicals go deep into the wood and keep it safe from fungi, mold, and termites. This treatment makes the plywood strong and long-lasting, even in tough conditions.
Controlled Manufacturing Process:
The process of making BWP plywood is carefully managed to keep quality high. This includes drying the wood properly before using it, which lowers its moisture content and makes it hard for fungi and mold to grow.
Regular Quality Checks:
During production, BWP plywood is regularly checked for quality. These checks make sure each sheet can resist water and stop fungal growth. Any problems that could trap moisture are found and fixed early.
Testing for Water Resistance:
BWP plywood is tested carefully to check its water resistance. This includes boiling the plywood in water for a long time to make sure it stays strong and does not let water in. Only plywood that passes these tests is called BWP.
Benefits of Using BWP Plywood
Lasts Longer: BWP plywood resists fungi and mold, so it lasts longer and gives better value for money.
Healthier Space: Stopping mold growth helps keep the living area healthier, lowering the risk of breathing problems and allergies.
Many Uses: BWP plywood can handle water, making it useful for many things, both inside and outside.
Conclusion
BWP plywood is a good choice for projects where moisture is an issue. It uses strong wood, water-resistant resins, and chemical treatments to protect against fungi and mold. This makes it durable, safe, and better for health in building and furniture projects.
By knowing these details, you can choose the best materials for your next project, ensuring long-lasting and sturdy results.

How to Choose the Right Plywood for Your Project
Selecting the right plywood for your project can make a significant difference in the outcome. With a variety of types, grades, and sizes available, it’s essential to understand what to look for to ensure you get the best results. In this blog, we’ll guide you through the process of choosing the right plywood for your needs. Plus, we’ll show you why Bhawani Plywood is your go-to source for top-quality plywood.
Understanding Plywood Grades
Plywood is graded based on its quality and waterproof level , and knowing these grades can help you make an informed decision.
BWP-Grade Plywood : This is the highest quality plywood, Which is boiling water proof best for places like chennai which are near sea . It’s ideal for projects requiring a long life, such as cabinetry and furniture.
BWR-Grade Plywood : Slightly lower in quality than BWP-grade, BWR-grade plywood has a little less life than BWP . But can be used for furniture which are not often in contact with water.
COMMERCIAL-Grade Plywood : The lowest grade, with several imperfections and lowest level of water that is moisture resistence . It’s best used for structural purposes where appearance isn’t a priority or temporary furnitures. It is also called as MR grade
Types of Plywood
Different types of plywood are designed for specific applications. Here are some common types:
1. Softwood Plywood : Made from softwood species like pine, fir, or spruce, this type is often used for construction and industrial purposes. 2. Hardwood Plywood : Made from hardwood species like oak, maple, or birch, this type is ideal for furniture, cabinetry, and high-quality interior finishes. 3. Marine Plywood : Specially treated to resist moisture, marine plywood is perfect for outdoor projects, boat building, and areas exposed to high humidity.
Key Factors to Consider
When choosing the right plywood for your project, consider the following factors:
1. Application : Determine where and how the plywood will be used. Structural applications require strong, thick plywood, while decorative uses benefit from high-quality veneers. 2. Exposure to Elements : For outdoor or high-moisture areas, choose BWP or marine-grade plywood to prevent damage. 3. Budget : Higher-grade plywood costs more but provides a better finish and longevity. Balance your budget with the quality required for your project. 4. Thickness : The thickness of plywood affects its strength and stability. Ensure you select a thickness appropriate for the load and stress it will endure.
Tips for Selecting Plywood
Here are some expert tips to help you select the right plywood:
1. Inspect the quality : Look for smooth, even surfaces with minimal defects. High-quality face ensures a better finish. 2. Check the Core: The core layers should be consistent and free from gaps. This affects the strength and durability of the plywood. 3. Consider the Weight : Heavier plywood indicates a higher density, which can be beneficial for structural applications but might be overkill for decorative uses.

It's suddenly very important that I estimate the price tags and availability of every possible fabric commonly available to normal middle-class Londoners in the Neath vs Albion. We are going to rank these based on cost and likelihood of availability.
10/10 availability means it's easy to produce, distribute, and useful. 10/10 price means it's expensive.
-=-
LINEN: Antibacterial, breathable, durable, dries quickly. However, has a lengthy drying, curing process along with separating it from the flax fiber. Linen grows in wet, windy climates and needs water for processing.
Could probably be grown in the Neath with appropriate lighting installed(?) Likely has a high cost to export to the skies (if trade route exists). Could maybe be grown in the Reach?? Would require space and appropriate conditions.
Rating: 5/10 . Price: 4/10
.
COTTON: Increasing prevalence due to the cheapness for nasty colonial reasons. However, requires extensive space and water to grow, along with a hot, humid climate. The textile itself is slow to dry and prone to mildew.
Requires a hot climate and plenty of water. I vote only the surface could produce it, and then, only Skies inhabitants would wear it because it's incompatible with the Neath.
Rating: 2/10 . Price: 10/10 after all the taxes.
.
WOOL: Normal textile. Renewable, breathable, odor resistant. Available: Wherever sheep, goats, rabbits, alpacas, etc. can be bred.
Goats will eat anything man. Some wool animals do not necessarily require light, and can be bred over time for low light levels. Friendship work pets! Would thrive alright in the Reach and they're already on Shepherd's Isles if I remember right. I assume wool would be cheap after extensive cultivation.
Rating: 10/10 . Price: 2/10
.
MUSHROOMS: I'm just researching this. Apparently it's a new, sustainable fabric people are exploring; mushroom textiles/mycelium is bacteria-resistant and breathable. However, I think the mycelium is literally grown to fit your body...? It seems like the company's selling point is the decrease in time from not sewing the object. (If I'm reading the website correctly.) This seems stupid honestly. You can already make plywood from mushrooms with some processing since the stems have cellulose similar to wood. Just treat it like you do bamboo textiles/rayon. I could be reading the articles wrong.
Mushroom fabric could be available both in the Neath and the Skies. Processing necessary unless you're doing it the stupid way, which you know what, I bet some rich fucker does want a one-piece mushroom suit grown to their body.
Rating: 4/10 . Price: 5/10 ... (One-piece: Rating: 1/10 . Price: 8/10)
.
(Leather under the cut. Not a huge fan but realized it would also be available and was important at the time. Plus, I stumbled onto the development of chromium tanning in the 1850s so if anyone is interested there's a brief write-up on that. However, don't read otherwise. Wool is hands-down the best textile resource available. Leather is a 2/10 . 2/10.)
LEATHER: Leather requires processing since you have to remove water molecules from the collagen (proteins) of the skin. Only removing the water from the skin makes it dry and stiff, but if you soak the skin in tannin to replace the water molecules instead of just removing them, you can prevent the stiffening.
Tanning usually took 1-2 months until 1858 when chromium salts were found to also replace collagen. Chromium tanning only takes one or two days, but causes massive environmental and physical damage due to chromium being a respiratory tract irritant and carcinogenic. Vegetable tannins are frequently used now, but chromium tanning still makes up a majority of the industry due to it being so cheap.
The benefits of leather are primarily the longevity and repairability. It's not breathable, it's not... pretty much anything except tough, and it takes a lot of effort to produce. The only thing going for it in the Fallen London universe would be the potential use of a resource going to waste.
However, given this is Fallen London in industrial 1860s England and nobody cares about anything + the assumptions made about wool up above, I bet leather could be used for shoes and tools/items rather than wearable garments. It might not be as prolific as wool simply because it's not as suitable for the environment, but it would technically be a resource going to waste if they couldn't use it. Could also be more useful in Skies.
Rating: 2/10 . Price: 2/10

Occupation
Part 18 of Dragon of the Yuyan
Read on AO3 | Series Masterpost
Zuko is not at all prepared to find Omashu draped in red and half plated in iron.
He is also not prepared to come face to face with one of his sister’s childhood friends.
It's only Zuko's experience blocking arrows with his dao that keeps him from being shot full of senbon before Aang brings the scaffolding down between them. Then they're found by the Omashu Resistance, and really, Zuko would love to hear just why this King Bumi, whom Aang had talked up as an amazing earthbender, would just… not defend his city from invasion? Like at all? Zuko can't wrap his head around it.
When the Resistance decides to retreat, Sokka comes up with the most bizarre cover Zuko has ever seen. The population of a city is transformed into a plague-ridden, shuffling horde, and he has the rogue thought that when the war is over, the Water Tribe warrior should try his hand at playwriting.
Zuko doesn’t have time to dwell on it, though—he’s trying desperately to keep up with an airbending Avatar bound and determined to find his friend. Tree-running (rather, roof-running) in Omashu is awesome, and he has got to bring Kai and Jiyoti here sometime, but by Agni is he going to be so fucking sore tomorrow. He finally catches up to Aang when he stops to free an enormous goat gorilla that the dumb kid addresses as Flopsie.
At this point, Zuko doesn't even bother trying.
He grabs Aang's collar before he can jump onto the creature's back, and forces him to turn around.
What in Agni's name do you think you're doing? He signs furiously. Do you have any idea where B-U-M-I actually is?
The face Aang pulls in response is not helpful, you little brat, and Zuko pinches the bridge of his nose.
Think, airhead! He demands, ending the command with a hard flick to the center of the blue arrow. You've been here before. Contrary to what it looks like, the Fire Nation didn't completely rearrange the city. Where's the city jail? Where's the place where the worst of the worst people are kept? That's where you'll find B-U-M-I.
Aang takes a deep breath and lets it out, ruffling their clothes as he accidentally airbends. "Okay, I know where to go."
They clamber onto Flopsie’s shoulders, and Aang guides the goat gorilla through the deserted city streets to the peak of the mountain. Through the bamboo and plywood scaffolding, Zuko can see the in-progress iron statue of Ozai that stands at the top, and can’t resist flipping the thing off with both hands. Thankfully Aang doesn’t notice.
Around the back at the foot of the statue stands a portable cell, similar to the one at Huzhen, and Zuko has to swallow down bile at the reminder. This one has a retractible roof, and Zuko is very puzzled as to why until he catches sight of the crane standing nearby, and the fucking metal coffin hanging from it. Spirits damn his people’s ingenuity.
Aang vaults from Flopsie’s shoulders, with Zuko on his heels, and races to the closest window.
“Bumi! Bumi!” He hisses.
The gaunt, droopy-skinned face of a very old man with mismatched green eyes and wild, pure white hair appears behind the bars.
“Aang, is that you?” He asks in a creaky voice, bushy white eyebrows lifting in surprise. “Where did you come from?”
“We’re here to get you out!” Aang hisses, furiously examining the portable cell for weak points, ranting in hissed whispers as he does. “What’s the matter with you, Bumi? Why didn’t you fight against the occupation? Why didn’t you escape when you had a chance? We talked to Yung, and he said you decided not to do anything!”
“Listen to me, Aang,” Bumi cuts in. His tone isn’t anything Zuko can recognize as angry or harsh, but it immediately shuts the airbender up. “There are options in fighting called jing. It’s a choice of how you direct your energy.”
“I know!” Aang snaps, and if Zuko wasn’t standing guard, he would’ve given the brat a whopper of an arrow-flick for talking to a much older master in such a tone, childhood friends or not. “There’s positive jing when you’re attacking and negative jing when you’re retreating,” he counts on his fingers.
“And neutral jing, when you do nothing!” Bumi adds, grinning beatifically. Zuko takes one look at that grin and knows that every disparaging story he'd heard about Omashu's king being insane is absolutely true.
“There’s three jings?” Aang splutters.
“Well technically there are eighty five, but we’ll just focus on the third,” Bumi replies. “Neutral jing is the key to earthbending. It involves listening and waiting for the right moment to strike.”
Like the Yuyan, Zuko realizes. Yuyan combat and archery both rely heavily on watching and waiting for the right moment to shoot or strike. Zuko didn’t know that there was an actual jing for that.
“That’s why you surrendered, isn’t it?” Aang asks softly.
“Yes, and it’s why I can’t leave now,” Bumi answers.
Aang sighs heavily, and leans his forehead against the metal. “I guess I need to find someone else to teach me earthbending.”
“Your teacher will be someone who has mastered neutral jing,” Bumi explains. “You need to find someone who waits and listens before striking.”
The wooden platform they’re standing on creaks as more weight is added, and Zuko can hear the rhythmic marching of Fire Nation guards. He grips Aang's shoulder.
"I hear it too, Zuko," Aang says. "Bumi, are you sure you want to stay here?"
"I have to, Aang, but I'll see you when the time is right," Bumi replies, and his smile doesn't seem nearly as addled this time. Then he peers at Zuko before grinning in a thoroughly unsettling manner.
Thankfully, the marching guards draw closer before Bumi can say anything, and Zuko takes the opportunity to yank Aang away to hide in the closest shadow. He covers the kid's body with his own, trusting in his dark brown and green Earth Kingdom clothes to prevent Aang's bright yellow and orange gi from being seen.
Getting out of the city is absolutely nerve wracking, especially considering that they have a giant goat gorilla tagging along that is absolute shit at stealth. Zuko can't decide if it's a miracle or simple incompetence that keeps them from being stopped by any guards, but they manage to sneak back out of the city without mishap, and then it's simply a long and bone-jarring ride on Flopsie's shoulders to the rendezvous site.
It's full dark by the time they get there, and Zuko immediately hops down, takes off his dao, and begins stretching out the stiffness from the ride and the crazy roof-running he had to do while Aang fills in Sokka and Katara.
Yung stomps up to the group, looking even more grave than usual. "We've got a problem," he states baldly. "We just did a headcount."
"Oh no, did someone get left behind?" Katara asks worriedly.
"No, we have an extra," the general replies, pointing over to where poor Momo is being hugged to death by a toddler in Fire Nation colors with a shock of dark hair and tawny eyes. There’s something familiar about the kid, but Zuko can’t figure out what it is.
Katara immediately goes gooey over the kid, and takes charge of him for the evening, making sure he's fed and kept clean. Once he's freed from the baby's grasp, Momo takes refuge on Zuko's shoulders, hissing every time the kid comes close.
It's after dinner that the messenger hawk arrives. The baby (the Governor’s son, Mai’s brother) is to be exchanged for King Bumi, and while Zuko is glad that the child seems so highly valued by his father, he can only wince at the thought of Ozai’s reaction to such a tactically stupid move.
Noon the next day finds the four of them standing at the foot of the unfinished statue of Ozai, the baby strapped securely to Sokka's chest. Katara and Zuko flank Aang, with Sokka and the kid safely in the rear, and Zuko has to stomp hard on his instinct to keep his hand on the grip of his dao. Sokka had floated the idea of the trade being a trap this morning, and with every moment that passes as they wait for the other side to show up, Zuko finds himself in growing agreement.
Finally three figures appear on the other end of the scaffold and stride forward. Three teenage girls, one immediately recognizable as Mai in the lead, flanked by a brunette in pink and…
Fuck. FUCK.
Azula.
Zuko employs every single trick the Yuyan and court life taught him to keep himself from visibly reacting. His sister looks almost exactly the same as she had over three years ago. Same smooth black hair arranged in a topknot with locks falling artfully to frame her face, same cold polished bronze eyes, same military trim appearance and royal bearing. She looks amazing, sleek and powerful, and Zuko is absolutely scared shitless at the sight of her.
Mai and Aang call across to each other, then Azula turns and says something to Mai, and Zuko knows that whatever she's saying is bad news for his squad. He's frozen, though, because if he so much as twitches Azula will notice, and she'll pounce like a tigerdillo.
"The deal's off!" Mai declares, raising a hand. The metal coffin containing King Bumi is hoisted rapidly up and away, and Aang starts forward with a cry of "Bumi!"
Azula lunges into a horse stance and sweeps her arm forward, a line of blue fire following her extended fingertips and racing in a roaring inferno towards Aang. In the same moment Zuko draws his dao and sprints forward, and as Aang dodges Azula's strike Zuko takes control of the flames with his bending and sweeps them away with a swipe of his blades. The expression on Azula's face is hilarious, but he doesn't have time to appreciate it properly, because she immediately goes on the attack.
Azula fires arrows of blue flame almost as fast as Kai shoots in the Archers’ speed drills. Zuko blocks them with his swords, the steel glowing as it becomes a medium for his own bending, sending back his own swipes of orange flame that Azula dodges with annoying flexibility. Her eyes are wide as she does, though, and he knows that he’s caught her off guard.
Zuko smirks at her, and glories in her furious glare as he lashes a fire whip through the air at her with his right blade. She dodges by leaping into the air and returns with an axe-kick that lays a long line of blue fire to fall on his head. Zuko spins a shield of orange flames to block the attack, and when they die away Azula stands panting through gritted teeth.
Zuko is breathing hard as well, suffused with a savage sort of triumph at managing to fight his prodigy sister to a standstill.
“A Firebending Master traveling with the Avatar," she muses, tone light but gaze sharp. "How treasonous. Mind telling me your name so I can make sure it's stricken from the records? You'll be dead, of course, so it'll hardly matter to you anyway."
As far as you're concerned, I'm already dead, so I'll pass on that, thanks, Zuko thinks, settling deeper into his stance in preparation for her next attack.
"What's the matter? Cat got your tongue?" Azula sneers, moving her hands, folded with only the first two fingers out straight, in curves around her. The air crackles, and blue-white sparks follow the movements. "Let me fix that!"
She points her right hand at him, and a jagged bolt of fucking lightning erupts from her fingertips and races towards him.
FUCK FUCK FUCK!
Zuko drops to the wooden floor of the platform, gritting his teeth and feeling all of the hair on his body standing on end as the lightning roars over his head.
"ZUKO!"
His squad sounds absolutely panicked, and Zuko knows for a fact that the panic will hit him later once they're all safe and as far away from Azula as possible. He glances up through his bangs at his sister, who is sheet white and staring at him with wide eyes, and immediately jumps to his feet and bolts, not bothering to sheath his swords. Appa is waiting at the edge of the platform, and Zuko runs right off the edge and into the saddle.
"Aang, we got him, go go go!" Sokka shouts, as Zuko sheaths his blades and lets a shaken-looking Katara check him over.
"Appa, yip yip!" Aang commands, flicking the reins. Appa roars and soars away from Omashu, and Zuko glances back to see Azula, Mai, and the girl in pink who can only be Ty Lee watching them go.
They land behind a mountain nearly a mile away, where the refugees from Omashu are waiting. Ukano's son is being reluctantly held by one of the Omashu women, who eagerly gives him up to Katara.
"We're going to start heading to Ba Sing Se," Yung declares perfunctorily.
Aang nods. "We need to return the baby to his family."
Zuko takes a deep breath and raises his shaking hands. We need to wait to do that until Princess Azula and her friends have left the city. It's too dangerous with her still there.
"Is that who that blue-fire girl was?" Sokka asks, waving absently as the former citizens of Omashu begin moving out.
Zuko nods, grimacing. I did say that she'd been declared a Firebending Master at thirteen, didn't I? The lightning-bending was new, but not terribly surprising, considering that it's a trait of the Royal Family.
"Why is she here now?" Katara asks, holding the baby close. She looks pale, and Zuko wonders what he'd missed while focused on Azula.
If I had to guess, the Fire Lord probably decided after the defeat at the North Pole that the Avatar is too much of a threat to remain at large, Zuko explains, trying to ignore the slimy feeling that always comes with trying to think like his megalomaniacal father. He probably sent her to capture Aang and either bring him back to the Fire Nation alive, or kill him. With the Comet arriving at the end of the summer, the next Avatar would be way too young to be any hindrance to whatever plan he has to utilize it.
"So we need to stay as far ahead of her as we possibly can, if we want to keep Aang from being flash-fried to a crisp," Sokka decides.
Zuko nods. That would be best, he agrees. As far as I know, there's no way to block lightning. You either get out of the way or you're toast. One hit and it's over.
All three of his friends look green at the thought, and Aang grips his staff tighter.
"We still need to return the baby," he says. "We can wait until nightfall, and I can just fly over, drop him off, and fly back."
We'll need to find a good vantage point to see when Azula leaves so that we know when it's safe for you to do that, Zuko signs.
They do exactly that, and when Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee leave the city just before sundown, Aang straps the baby to his chest as snugly as possible, and carefully glides toward the city. Zuko, Katara, and Sokka wait with Appa and Momo, and as soon as Aang returns, they turn south and fly away as fast as Appa can go.
They make camp at the northern edge of the massive southern swamp a couple hours after midnight. Zuko tries to insist on taking watch, but is overruled ruthlessly by both Katara and Sokka. He spreads out his bedroll, lies down, and stares at the stars.
Fuck. He'd known that he'd eventually have to see Azula again, you can't challenge the heir to a throne without actually coming face-to-face with them, but. He can't actually believe that she's here, in the Earth Kingdom. And she's mastered lightning. The tiniest part of him that is still her big brother, still her Zuzu, is incredibly proud. Only the best of the best firebenders, usually only members of the Royal Family, are able to do that, and the fact that she can, as young as she is… but the greater part of him, the part that had spent the majority of his childhood being tormented by his sister and father, is absolutely terrified. There's no defense against lightning. As he'd told his squad earlier, all it would take is one hit, and that's it. Game over.
He can't let Azula anywhere near Aang. If her actions today have shown anything, it's that she's still the same cruel, ruthless girl she was when he was still living with her. Maybe the brunt of that can be blamed on Ozai and his own cruelty, but right now, he has to focus on keeping his student, his friend, safe from her. Maybe once the war is over, there'll be a chance to see if there's any way to lessen Ozai's mark on her, but for right now, she has to be treated as the major threat that she is.
He doesn't sleep that night.

Residential Roofing - What You Need to Know
Tumblr media
alt="Residential asphalt shingle roofing system installation"
Prevent having your residential roofing system improperly installed or assembled with poor-quality material. Knowing how components of a residential roofing system are made and installed will help you acquire the best quality residential roof and its installation in the Atlanta metro area.
newimageroofingatlanta.com gathered the following residential roof anatomy, manufacturing, and installation information to help you when selecting a roofing system, its components, and the roof installer for your Atlanta, Georgia, home.
Residential Sloped Roofing System
A residential sloped roof is a protective shield for your home, safeguarding you from the elements while increasing your home’s structural integrity. An essential component of the roofing system is the shingle (a key component that enhances your home’s aesthetic appeal and contributes to the durability and longevity of its roof). Consider the following anatomy of a residential sloped roof:
1. Roof Deck – A sloped roof’s foundation is its deck, typically made of plywood or oriented strand board (OSB). It provides a sturdy base for the installation of roofing materials and ensures structural stability.
2. Underlayment – Beneath the roofing shingles lies the underlayment, a water-resistant barrier shielding the roof deck from moisture and helps prevent leaks. Common underlayment types include asphalt-saturated felt and synthetic materials like synthetic underlayment or rubberized asphalt.
3. Roofing Shingles – Roofing shingles are the visible layer of a residential sloped roof, providing protection and enhancing the overall aesthetics. There are various shingle types available, like asphalt shingles, wood shingles, metal shingles, and clay or concrete tiles. Among these, asphalt shingles are the most commonly used due to their affordability, durability, and ease of installation (specially cut or formed shingles are produced for the ridge and hips).
Asphalt Shingle Manufacturing Process
While asphalt shingle manufacturing and technology have evolved over the years, their basic composition has remained the same. Consider the following asphalt shingle manufacturing process:
Raw Materials – Asphalt shingle production begins with high-quality material selection. Fiberglass or organic mats serve as a shingle’s core, while asphalt acts as a waterproofing agent. Mineral granules are then applied for surface protection and UV resistance, and additives are incorporated to enhance the shingle’s fire resistance and flexibility.
Mat Preparation – The selected mat material (fiberglass or organic), undergoes a manufacturing process to reinforce its strength and durability. Fiberglass mats are made by weaving glass fibers together, while organic mats are typically composed of recycled felt paper.
Coating and Drying – The prepared mat is then coated with asphalt (front and back), using a saturation process to ensure consistent coverage. The coated mat passes through a drying oven, which allows the asphalt to rapidly cure and stabilize.
Granule Application – Once dried, the coated mat proceeds to the granule application process. A layer of ceramic-coated mineral granules is evenly distributed on the top surface of the shingle, providing color, texture, and protection against weathering elements. The granules are embedded into the asphalt surface to enhance adhesion and durability.
Cutting and Shaping – After granule application, the asphalt-coated mat is cut into individual shingles. This process can be done manually or using automated machinery, depending on the production scale.
Packaging and Distribution – Finished roofing shingles are carefully inspected for quality and packed into bundles or cartons. They are then shipped to distributors, contractors, and suppliers for installation on residential roofs.
Note: Read more about roofing shingle production and options by visiting this roof shingle manufacturer.
Residential Sloped Roof Installation
Installing a residential shingle roofing system requires careful planning, proper preparation, and skilled execution. Here is a step-by-step overview of the typical installation process:
Preparation and Safety – Before beginning any work, safety must be prioritized. This includes wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) like:
Hard hat
Gloves
Goggles
Non-slip footwear
Harness
The area around the home should be cleared of any obstacles, and precautions should be taken to protect landscaping and outdoor features or furniture.
Removal of Existing Roofing Materials (Tear-off) – If there is an existing roof, the first step is to remove the old roofing materials. This may involve stripping off old shingles, underlayment, and flashing. Care should be taken to dispose of the old materials properly.
Inspection and Repair – Once the roof is cleared, a thorough inspection should be conducted to identify any damaged roof decking, sheathing, or structural issues. Any necessary repairs or replacements should be completed before installing a new roofing system.
Underlayment Installation – Install the underlayment, which acts as a moisture barrier and provides an additional protective layer. Asphalt-saturated felt or synthetic underlayment is commonly used. The underlayment should be rolled out horizontally, starting from the bottom edge of the roof and overlapping each subsequent row by a few inches (to ensure proper watershed).
Flashing Installation – Flashing is used to prevent water penetration at vulnerable areas like:
Valleys
Chimneys
Skylights
Roof intersections
Flashing is typically made of metal or a flexible waterproof material. Flashing should be installed before the shingles, ensuring proper coverage, sealing, and drainage.
Starter Shingle Placement – These shingles have a specialized adhesive strip and are installed along the roof’s eaves. These specialized shingles provide a secure foundation for the rest of the shingles and help prevent wind uplift.
Shingle Installation – The chosen shingles are installed from the bottom up, working in rows. Each shingle is nailed or stapled into place using appropriate roofing fasteners. It is crucial to follow the manufacturer’s guidelines regarding nail placement, spacing, and shingle overlap (for best product performance).
Tumblr media
Ventilation and Ridge Cap Installation – Roof vents or ridge vents are installed to ensure proper attic ventilation preventing moisture buildup, allow air circulation, and help regulate temperature and humidity. The ridge cap, a specialized shingle designed for the roof’s peak, is then installed, overlapping the adjacent shingles and providing a solid, finished look.
Cleanup and Final Inspection – Once the roof’s shingles are installed, the work area should be thoroughly cleaned, removing all debris or loose material. A final inspection should be conducted to ensure the roof is properly installed, all shingles are secure, and there are no visible issues or gaps.
Note: The specific installation process may vary depending on factors like the shingle type, roof design, and local building codes. It is recommended to consult with a professional roofing contractor for a precise installation or replacement tailored to your specific roof and location requirements. A well-installed residential shingle roofing system provides long-lasting protection, durability, and aesthetic appeal to your home.
Residential Asphalt Shingle Roofing
In this article, you discovered the composition of a residential roofing system, asphalt shingle manufacturing, and how residential sloped roofs are installed.
Understanding how residential roofing systems are built, manufactured, and installed will help you choose the best materials for your home’s roof.
Not knowing how to recognize quality roofing material or identify the steps in a roof replacement or installation will leave you vulnerable to unscrupulous and unprofessional roofers trying to take advantage of your need.

The structure of your home is made up of different parts, such as the foundation, basement, walls and roof. These components bear the brunt of any extreme climate or ground moisture due to seepage. This can weaken the structural framework and result in cracks. Applying a waterproof outer layer will prevent such damage arising from pressure or dampness leakage.
A germ-free environment
The proliferating of bacteria and germs on ruinous and damp ceramic tiles can pose significant health risks for household inhabitants, as infections and illnesses may result from this. But, applying waterproof coverings have the capacity to significantly attenuate the blossoming of mildew and microorganisms.
