Some folks were asking for my boiled peanuts recipe (as they feature in our game, Scarlet Hollow, and we made a big batch this past weekend), but it's unfortunately a bit difficult for me to post with lightness in my heart right now because this past weekend the entirety of western North Carolina, where Scarlet Hollow takes place, was devastated by hurricane Helene.
Towns I have been to and have fond memories of have been described as "washed away." The region is almost entirely still out of power, the water is all contaminated with repair efforts expected to take weeks, and there are hundreds of people stranded, including my relatives, as roads have been totally destroyed. My uncle sent a photo of the road near his house, thankfully his home is okay but I have to image it's going to take a while for roads like this to see repairs:
I know this photo has been making the rounds, but it bears posting for those who haven't seen it-- the main strip of Chimney Rock, before and after:
Trees, cars, buildings, everything is gone. And now all that debris is just sitting in lakes and rivers. This is Lake Lure today:
Pictures from Swannanoa, an absolutely lovely town with so much character, where my sister went to folk music camp as a teen, where mobile home parks were hit hardest-- people's houses just floated away downriver:
And of course Asheville is the town most people will have heard of. A city of 95k, completely isolated in the days after the storm. The River Arts District was still underwater as of yesterday:
People throughout the entire region are without power and transport and fuel and water and food, they've lost their homes and their businesses, and people have had to resort to hiking to reach loved ones to see if they're safe or whether their homes were just wiped off the face of the earth-- hundreds are still missing because it's been so difficult to get in contact with people in these isolated, rural communities that are now nearly impossible to get to because roads were washed away or collapsed in landslides.
I honestly don't even know where to start when it comes to relief funds or ways that people can help. I've been listening to the local radio station and it sounds like the area is in shock, people are coming in to help pick up the pieces but there is so much recovery that will have to happen that it's hard to know where to start.
This article from the Citizen Times has a list of places that are currently helping with relief efforts.
It's absolutely unfathomable that a hurricane could hit the mountains. The effects of this are going to be felt in western NC for a long time, and my heart goes out to everyone who is currently stranded or trying to get in touch with people who are.

Corin Wickes Headcanons
Yeah I’m doing Corin too, sue me
How’s that undiagnosed anxiety disorder treating you queen?
But in all seriousness she really should get that shit diagnosed
Unfortunately she can’t for one major reason: her parents
Corin is not only homeschooled, but currently lives with her parents who aren’t exactly the best people
I mean the girl literally apologizes for existing, her parents aren’t treating her right
Her parents applied to Victoria Housekeeping for her under the assumption it would teach her discipline and manners and whatnot
Within the first week of Corin being there, Lycaon realized what was going on between Corin and her parents and vowed to be a better, more caring role model for her
He has her working the most out of everyone else
A normal person would hate having such a busy work schedule but Corin loves having so much freedom at her job
She also enjoys the opportunity to be helpful, useful, and making a difference within the organization
Like? No one yells at her? Or insults her? Or is stuffy and stringent the way her parents are? Sure, being a maid entails certain kinds of rigidity and strictness, but to Corin, the way Victoria Housekeeping Co operates is the biggest breath of fresh air she’s had in her whole life
Corin is obviously not allowed to have weapons at home, so Lycaon lets her store her sawblade within one of the many safe houses their company owns. Just like how Lycaon gifted Ellen her shears, Corin’s sawblade is also a gift from him
She originally had it outfitted with the same ice technology his boots and Ellen’s shears have, but kept slipping on the ice it created, and also had a harder time sawing through things in her path from how slippery the ice made everything. So, with Lycaon’s permission, she removed the feature altogether and made it a normal saw.
You’d think a girl so frail and timid and the epitome of cringefail girlfail sopping wet cat would also be physically weak. You’d be wrong
I mean it’s already canon her and Ellen are the strongest when it comes to pure physical damage, as evident by Corin’s introduction in Nekomata’s quest, as well as the entirety of chapter 3.
Corin says it has something to do with genetics probably, something about her dad being a former performing strong man or something
Corin also internally explodes every time Ellen compliments her on her strength. It doesn’t happen a lot, but when it does, Corin loses it
Has the BIGGEST crush on Ellen and is 100% not normal about it
Like, hello? She’s a sheltered girl with strict parents who now gets to see arguably the coolest person ever (in her eyes) on a daily basis
Corin is even more nervous around Ellen than most people for obvious reasons
She also damn near had a heart attack when Ellen passed out in front of her the first time. She grabbed so many pillows, several water bottles, four different sport and energy drinks, several protein efficient snacks, and even had a first aid kit at the ready just in case
Ellen normally hates it when people get fussy over her passing out, but considering this was the first time Corin had seen it, and the fact Corin went overboard in trying to help, Ellen let it slide
Now whenever Ellen crashes, Corin is the first one to make sure she’s okay before carrying on with her work
Ellen also knows it’s Corin who leaves candy and lollipops on the pillow next to her for when she wakes back up
Corin has since stopped worrying about Ellen every time she crashes, but insists to the point of threatening others with her sawblade that she be the one to see to it that Ellen is comfortable
There was once an incident where Corin, distracted from Ellen walking into the room, cut her hand whilst repairing her sawblade. She then bore witness to both Lycaon and Rina holding a suddenly frenzied Ellen back, who was fixated on nothing but the blood dripping from Corin’s palm. Lycaon took Corin out of the room to attend to her injury once Rina was successfully able to knock Ellen unconscious.
Ellen spent the next week apologizing to Corin and explaining how her shark thiren instincts are hard to control. Corin accepted every apology, but frankly didn’t need one, because that incident was probably the most exhilarating thing to happen to her outside of hollow missions with the company
Ellen was fixated on nothing but her in that moment, which did wonders for Corin’s fragile nonexistent ego
Every time Ellen interacts with her in any capacity, Corin gets major butterflies
Ellen insists Corin doesn’t need to refer to her as “Miss Ellen” but Corin disagrees. Corin thinks Miss Ellen absolutely needs to be treated like royalty
Corin would quite literally die for Ellen. Corin fell for her, and she fell HARD
Corin keeps a small box under her bed full of trinkets she likes. So far the only occupants of said box are buttons from her first teddy bear, and the metal piece shaped like a bear that Ellen bit into shape for Corin
Ellen is indirectly to thank for Corin’s fashion sense as well. At one point the shark girl mentioned how the Victoria Housekeeping Co uniforms were “giving Lolita menhera Jfashion” to Lycaon in passing, causing Corin to look up the style on Inter Knot (on one of the work computers, no way her parents let her have one of her own) and falling in love with it immediately
Corin already had quite a bit of sewing experience having been taught home ec by her mother, so it was no surprise she picked up outfit and plushie making very easily
She’s responsible for a lot of the accessories the company wears on their uniforms. She enjoyed making the bows and jaw head and neck piece for Ellen the most. Obviously.
Ellen often rambles to Corin about school and work related stuff. Corin soon realizes that she’s the only one Ellen does this to.
“Why?” She’d ask Ellen at one point during one of their conversations. “You’re a good listener. Plus, you give better advice than Lycaon and Rina combined.”
How Ellen didn’t notice how red her face got in that moment, Corin has no idea
Lycaon often contracts Corin longer hours than need be. Corin insists she can work the full duration, but Lycaon always makes some excuse about having enough help already, and that she should just go on a break, and that he’d clock her out, etc etc
Lycaon you ain’t slick we all know you’re doing it so this girl can actually go out and do things she enjoys
Corin has no idea that that’s the actual case, but she’s certainly grateful with how much free time Lycaon allows her
When their schedules line up, Ellen even invites Corin out for boba or lunch with her friend group
Corin is almost always quiet during these meetings, not wanting to intrude on Ellen’s quality time with her friends, but to her utter shock, Ellen is constantly making sure Corin is included in the conversation
Corin, being the sheltered kid, also hasn’t tried enough things, so of course Ellen insists on getting her fun snacks and roping her into seeing a movie or going to an arcade with her friend group
Corin gets so wrapped up in it all that by the time she gets home, she misses it immensely
Work is always “good”, when her parents ask. They never press for details thankfully due to Corin and Lycaon both making up an excuse that maid work is private, there’s NDA stuff involved, blah blah blah
Eventually Corin is able to buy her own cell phone with her salary. Her parents don’t know about it.
Her parents don’t know a lot of things about her, including the fact she’s actually been able to experience a normal teenage girl’s life for awhile now
Lycaon always insists that if Corin ever feels her parents are too much, she’ll always have a permanent home in Victoria Housekeeping Co. Corin gets closer and closer to accepting that offer every day.

Funny one shot idea
After the event of ennies long/water 7
Luffy and the rest of the crew were more clingy with Robin and usopp
This is one of the most sickening fluff bits I've ever written
The walls were higher on the Thousand Sunny, and the mens' quarters were wide and tidy in a way only new things were, and Usopp couldn't tell which bunk was his anymore. He still had the tacky star blanket he bought in Alabasta because he didn't know somewhere so hot could get so cold at night, and it was stained with charcoal and ripped near the bottom but it fit perfectly in Merry because she was made of inexperienced craftsmanship and shoddy repairs. He felt like he was bringing something ugly in, putting his worn old blanket over the clean white sheets. He felt like he was visiting, like he shouldn't track mud in or mess up anything enough to be comfortable.
Then the door slammed open hard enough the sniper jumped. "Usopp!" Luffy hollered as if Usopp weren't a meter away. "You dissapeared!"
Usopp had been gone for less than two minutes. "Well I had to check the bunks for dream eels, someone had to."
Luffy looked over at the bunk in wonder. "Can you eat them?"
"You can but they dig a hole into your skull and eat your brains so maybe don't." Usopp spread his blanket over one of the bunks decisively.
Luffy chuckled. "Maybe not. But come on! I'll ask Sanji to cook the eels later!" He said, snagging Usopp's wrist in his rubbery grasp and dragging him away before he could fret about his blanket again. Usopp didn't even bother protesting.
Half the crew was out on the grass-covered deck, Robin bracketed on one side by Nami and the other by Franky, Chopper in her lap. She looked tired, but happy all the same. It was good, she seemed more comfortable than she did on the Merry. Maybe the tall walls suited her better.
Luffy offered a very exaggerated wave to the group on deck as he pulled Usopp along. "I'm back! Usopp told me there were worms in my bed that ate brains."
"Oh, the poor things are starving then." Nami teased before the group chucked a little.
Luffy laughed along. "Yeah!" He paused. "Hey."
Robin, the only one who didn't laugh, but was still smiling ear to ear, spoke up. "Did you let Zoro and Sanji in on our little plan yet, Captain?"
"Ah - I got distracted when Usopp dissapeared. C'mon Usopp!" The sniper was then dragged away, left to question what the 'plan' was.
Usopp didn't have time to revel in the new, huge kitchen when Luffy burst in. "Sanji! Food!" Luffy said automatically.
Sanji shot the captain a look, but then his features softened when he saw Usopp. "Fine, fine. What do you want?"
Luffy hummed. "The bugs Usopp found in the bunks!" He declared, and that was almost nothing like Usopp's original lie, but the confidence almost convinced the king of liars himself.
Sanji didn't appear to react safe for his face going ghost pale. "Bugs. In the bunks."
"YUP! Nami said they were hungry!"
Sanji turned back to the stove. "I see. I'll take watch tonight." He said, an unmistakable tremble in his voice.
Usopp didn't laugh but it was a very near thing. "Don't you worry, your trusted sniper Usopp blew all those bugs away!" He said. "You should have seen them, eight feet tall, human hands, wearing clothes even! They told me they were the devil's ocean woodmites, they threatened to bite the ship in two before I hit them with a fire star and blew them to smitherines!" He watched Sanji relax the more fantastical his story got, until he was humming along with the details as if it were a completely logical thing.
Luffy was enraptured, he always was, it made Usopp feel some type of way.
"Anyway!" Luffy yelled, and Zoro snorted from where he was probably sleeping - this room was too big, he didn't even know Zoro was napping in here. "We're camping on the deck to crispen the Sunny! And because Nami won't let me sleepover in the girls' room with Usopp."
Sanji squinted at Usopp as if this wasn't the first he was hearing of it too. "Christen. And tell Nami swan she's a queen for setting boundaries and coming up with such an amazing idea." He said shortly. "I'll be out with dinner in half an hour. Take the mosshead with you, he's poisoning my nice new kitchen with his man stink."
Luffy mock-saluted, marching over to the table and dragging their star swordsman out from under it. Zoro didn't wake up because of this, so Luffy just dragged him back to the door. A few distinct thunks of a head hitting a doorway and they were back on the deck. The sky was getting darker.
"You think Franky brought firewood?" Usopp asked.
Luffy hummed. "Dunno."
They made it back to the group on the deck and Luffy dragged Zoro over before sitting down, dragging Usopp down with him until he and Zoro were almost bracketing Usopp the same way Robin was being bracketed, all in a tiny circle. It was nice - Usopp might not belong in the big rooms or on the clean sheets, but he belonged here, or at least he wanted to belong here. He would work hard to keep belonging here.
Nami started talking, idle chatter she always shared with Usopp, but now there was an undercurrent of relief from her. It made guilt curdle in Usopp's throat, but he swallowed it.
Soon enough Sanji came in with a feast he could barely balance, and Robin gave him several hands, and they shared a picnic while the sky went from blue to orange.
After that, they all went back to their quarters to grab every spare blanket and pillow to make the world's biggest fort before Franky got the gas fire pit working - which inspired the fort to be dismantled so everyone could set up bedding close to the fire before it got too dark.
Robin fell asleep first, so Chopper and Nami fell asleep next to her. Luffy bullied Usopp into sharing his tacky star blanket, and Usopp fell asleep listening to the ocean and various snores.
#one piece#lusopp#if you squint#Which you should#Shout out to whoever gets what the star blanket is in reference to#I know I could have leaned more into the possessive dependant aspect but Robin deserves to rest

Fic Prompts: Free Day Friday
Based on the concepts of both "Rift Apart set a precedent for alternate gender dimensional counterparts" and "what if in Meddling Mar Damas had recognized Mar immediately" we have today's prompt: Mirror Mar.
The little girl sat propped up on a reed mat beside the water, still flushed. Her brother still lay motionless on the mat beside her, nowhere near waking. As Damas watched from the dais, the girl traced her fingers over the boy's scarred arms, and an alarmed look crossed her face. Poor sprout. The brother had doubtless been hiding his injuries from her.
"Do not wake him," Seem cautioned gently, removing the child’s hand. "The eco must repair his organs or he will die."
It was the plain and unvarnished truth, but the girl burst into tears. Seem cringed, seeming unusually uncertain. They were knowledgeable about many things, but children were not among those topics. With a slightly exasperated huff, Damas left his throne and stepped across the stones. He knelt beside the pallets and forced himself to take the girl -- not Mar, it was just a freak coincidence -- by the hand.
"Come. Let him sleep. He will recover, child." He nodded to the scars. "Look: he is a fighter."
"But they're on the wrong side!" The girl burst into emphatic signs. "Wrong arm! Everything is backwards on this side of the Rift Gate!"
"Rift Gate?" Seem asked, their ruby eyes alight with interest, "You found a working Rift Gate, little one?"
"The last one!" The girl wiped her eyes, but her hiccups persisted. "Uncle Sig’s eye is on the wrong side, Jakky's scars are on the wrong side- and Jakky is a boy! Am I gonna be a boy when I grow up?!"
The adults exchanged bewildered glances. Tentatively, Damas extended a finger to brush away tears from round cheeks. Gods, she even had freckles like Mar, just on the opposite side of her-
"Little one," Seem said with stifled amusement, "Why would your brother’s gender have anything to do with yours? That's...really not how that works. You'll grow up to be you, not him."
"But except he's not my brother, he's me!" The child protested, "The sage said so! Except Jakky wasn't a boy when I went in the Rift and now all the scars are on the wrong side!" The girl twisted her green curls in her hands repeatedly, breathing quickening. "When did that happen? Are all my freckles gonna change places? I don't want my freckles to move! Why is everything the other way around?!"
Damas felt bile creep up his throat.
The backwards amulet around the girl's neck.
The shared features.
Gods, no.
He looked to the boy, eyes falling as if by instinct on a trio of freckles against the left side of his jaw.
The bile climbed higher.
It wasn't possible. It wasn't possible.
He'd heard legends of Rift Gates, but there was never anything in the old texts about this.
"What-"
His voice failed him. His hands shook.
"What is your name?"
The child looked stricken, and her tears began anew.
"You don't remember me? Are you all out of place now too, Daddy?"
Seem recoiled in shock, and Damas collapsed from his crouch to his knees.
No, no that would mean they were both- Please, no-!
What had the Precursors done? Who was the boy, then, if the girl swore they'd once been the same person? What had these children suffered?
"Mar?" he whispered in a shaking voice, "In your world, on your side of the Rift Gate, were you Mar?"
"Uh-sniff!-huh."
"Then...my Mar is...with your elder self?"
"Oh...I guess so." This Other Mar, a bit too old -- but not near as old as the boy on the other pallet -- looked pleadingly at him. "My Jakky is still in the Gate? I don't have to be a he and move all my freckles if I don't wanna?"
"I...would assume that is what happened, given...given your amulet," Damas faintly heard himself choke out, as if at a great distance.
The child, this Mar from another world, somehow managed to look even more crestfallen. "Then...that's your Jakky, right? You're...not my daddy...are you?"
Instinct took over. Damas swept little Mar into his arms, and tucked her head into the crook of his neck.
"No, little viper," he croaked, "I am sorry, I do not know if I had a daughter before today. I do not know if you differ from the child I remember. My Mar was...was two when last I saw him, much would have changed regardless."
"I'm six now." Mar hiccuped and held up the number on her fingers. "I'm not a baby anymore."
"I...see that."
"And I like slingshots and bugs and baby animals and coloring. But I don't like dark eco, only Jakky has to use it because all- all his eco got all jumbled up." Mar squeezed closer to Damas. "Jak said he wouldn't let me get dark eco. I don't wanna get dark eco."
Seem looked from this older Mar to the teenaged boy fighting for his life on the mat. A future version of Mar? It couldn't be true, they didn't want to believe it! This boy reeked of dark eco, while the child practically dazzled with unshaped prism potential. Surely no child of the House of Mar would stoop low enough to partake of dark eco!
Unless...
Seem eyed the scars again, and in spite of themself their hand rose to cover their throat almost protectively.
Unless Mar had not been a willing participant.
Damas followed Seem's gaze, and his stomach turned. Two Mars, both years older than they should have been. Alone, battered, collapsed in the desert- Had they been trying to get home? Had Mar been fighting to come back to him all this time?
Two Mars. A son and a daughter. A blessing, a miracle and yet- what had the Precursors put his child through? What were these scars, even on the little one?
Damas looked to the boy, motionless beside the orange...thing...he'd been found with, and he swallowed hard.
"Mar," he whispered, "Tell me everything."
___________BONUS__________________
When the boy called Jak finally awoke, he didn't remember the room he was in, just as Mar had warned. Nor did he seem to be particularly happy that Mar had given away any information whatsoever.
"Mar!" he rasped, "You can't just tell strangers your name! We've talked about this!"
"You're not the boss of me!" Mar retorted almost gleefully.
The boy pushed himself upright to point at her. "Uh, yes I am? I literally am the boss of you by default, kid."
"That's not what Daddy says!"
Jak lurched forward as Daxter coughed water all over them both.
"Who?!"

St Ninian’s Manse.
I've not had decent walk around Leith for a while so I remedied that today. My first point of interest is the former church, nestled amongst a cluster of modern buildings at Quayside Street off Sandport Place, while you can see the steeple, which I shal come back to later, easily enough from further afield, you won't find the Manse in full until you are almost on top of it.
The buildings origins lie in a chapel that established in the late 15th century, was the home of North Leith Parish Church, playing a vital role in the development of the area. It's importance is evident as it stands near the head of the first bridge to North Leith over The Water of Leith.
ln 1493 Robert Bellenden, Abbot of Holyrood, founded and endowed a chantry chapel. The chapel fell into ruin after the Reformation, it was restored in 1595, and in 1606 became officially the church of a new and independent parish of North Leith. The Statistical Account of Scotland states both the church and manse are as old as the times of popery, but they have undergone a variety of repairs; including a considerable one in the year 1736, when it was in a great measure rebuilt." In the early 19th century, when a new parish church had been provided on another site, the old one was let to other congregations; and in 1825, when the last of these left, the place was converted into a granary, which in its turn has been rebuilt as a mill, pics of it as a mill in the 1950-60's can be found by clicking here
The most impressive part of The Manse, to me anyway, is the aforementioned spire. If you look at it closely you will see it is made of wood. This is Leith's and so Edinburgh's sole surviving 17th-century timber steeple.
The entrance to the stair, now covered by an extension, is dated 1675 as seen on the lintel above the door. Another interesting feature is the inscription above an archway that says;
BLESED AR THEY YAT HEIR YE VORD OF GOD AND KEIP IT/ LVK XI 1600.
It comes from the New Testament bible by Luke, and quite literally translates to;
“Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”
The charity Scottish Historic Buildings Trust restored the building from 1996 to 2002 along with the adjacent Quayside Mills, creating desirable waterfront accommodation and office space. Much of the interior, from what I can see having trawled through a fair amount of pictures, retains a certain amount of it's charm, with many of the timbers visible throughout the building.
Some debate has gone on, due to the alterations over the centuries, whether this or Lambs House, a short walk away, on the south of the bridge is the oldest building in Leith.
Leith is usually thought of as the port or dock area of Edinburgh. It was not, however, part of Edinburgh until 1920. Between 1833 and 1920 Leith was an independent burgh. Before this Edinburgh town council was able to control Leith through being the feudal superior of the land there. Many of the citizen s to this day are fiercely proud of their old status, calling themselves Leithers, rather than saying they are from Edinburgh, it is apparent on the poem below I found on the Leith Forever web page, it was written in 1919 and appeared in Andrew Grant’s collection of poems from the Leith Observer 1914 -1920.
Ye folks a’ Leith, are ye a’ sleepin’
Whilst Reekie’s cheils are busy reapin’
Braw schemes to hae ye in their keepin’ For
evermair?
Arouse yoursel’s an’ dae the sweepin’
O’ your ain stair!
If ye yoursel’s wad save some siller,
Ye’d better tak’ in hand the tiller
Auld Reekie means to “droon the miller,” An’ sink
the mill;
For loaded debts noo fairly fill her-
They’re ‘yont her skill.
The debter’s grawvit’s rooned her neck,
An’ just tae save hersel’ frae wreck,
She offer ye her hindmaist cheque,
Frae some dark source.
But in nae bank, gi’en bow or beck,
Wad e’er endorse.
Keep clear o’ yon West-eny crew
O’ their “fine airs” hae nocht ado,
A keen East windblaws thro’ and thro’
Their mim-moo’ed graces;
Jist skin it aff, an’ then ye’ view
Some cranks in places!
Tak’ heed from Glesca’s swollen size;

O’ ruination!
But rouse ye, toonsmen, ane an’ a’
An’ gie your pipes a warlike blaw.
Let ilka patriot in a raw

Ye craftsmen o’ oor ancient toun,
Your he’rts I ken are unco soun’,
It’s time ilka ane o’us marched roun’
Oor ain auld border;
An’ paced oor boundaries up an’ doon
In martial order.
The “honest toun” ayont oot by,

Has lately bade her burghers hie
To “ride the marches”;
Let Leith wi’ her auld neebor vie,

Let’ a’ meet at the Giant’s Brae
An’ mak the auld Port bricht an’ gay,
Turn oot in sold, massed array,

On each a badge, an’ let it say-
“Auld Leith for ever!”

~A Broken Wing~
"I can heal myself. Please don't worry so much about me," Manwë attempted to reassure him, wrapping his good wing around himself while his eyelids fluttered close.
"I simply need to... rest a little, I think..."
"I will watch over you," Ulmo promised, took his hand and squeezed it lightly.
Pairings: Ulmo/Manwë (mostly platonic, possibly unrequited crush), Manwë/Varda Synopsis: Manwë tries to stop Melkor from destroying the Valar's works, but it doesn't go well. Ulmo picks up the pieces. Featuring: Fluff, hurt & comfort, non-graphic violence, Ulmo having a crush on Manwë
Also available on AO3
The foundations of Arda were shaking. Ulmo could feel shockwaves rippling through his waters and knew his brethren were fighting once again. Only the Valar themselves could cause such cataclysmic events; or rather, only one particular Vala.
Melkor.
Fearing for the safety of Arda as well as his brethren, Ulmo followed the disturbance within his element until he found himself on a beach near one of Aulë's mountain ranges, and emerged from the water in a tall humanoid shape, ready to come to his fellow Valar's aid. Melkor was nowhere to be seen, though the echo of his mighty song still reverberated within the area, causing the earth to shake and rocks to fall.
In the midst of the destruction left behind by his rage lay a blue and white figure, half covered by dust and snow. Ulmo felt himself being overcome with worry, already sensing the familiar presence of Manwë, though his song was faint and disjointed. Within a split second, he rushed to his side and gathered his friend's injured, almost broken fána in his arms as carefully as he could.
"Manwë," he whispered, brushing a stray strand of white hair away from his face.
"What happened to you?"
Manwë slowly opened his eyes as he noticed that he was being picked up. It seemed to take a moment until he realized where he was and regained enough consciousness to speak. Whatever Melkor had done to him, it had done more damage than Ulmo had ever thought possible and his brow creased with worry.
"I..."
Visibly disoriented, Manwë blinked a couple of times.
"Save your strength. I will bring you somewhere safe," Ulmo mumbled, holding him close to his chest.
Letting his instincts guide him, he retreated back towards the sea and followed the shoreline away from the echo of Melkor's voice, hoping they wouldn't be noticed. If the fallen Vala chose to pursue them, Ulmo would do everything in his power to defend Manwë, yet he knew he was no match for the mightiest of the Valar when it came down to it.
"Melkor said he would destroy all of Aulë's mountains and I tried to stop him," Manwë quietly spoke up again, averting his gaze in shame.
"I was... unable to."
"It is not your fault," Ulmo said emphatically and placed him on a nearby patch of grass as gently as he could.
It pained him to see his friend being hurt. One of Manwë's wings was bent at an odd angle and it seemed like he had trouble moving it, the rest of his fána not faring much better. His hair was tousled and his robes were torn and stained with dirt. If Ulmo had to guess, Manwë had either fallen from a great height or had been thrown against a mountain by force. Anger coursed through his veins; if only he was strong enough to repay Melkor in kind, if only he had been there earlier to keep this from happening.
"You need to repair your fána, Manwë. Or discard it," Ulmo urged softly, forcing himself to remain calm, and reached out with his hand to clean dust and mud off his skin.
If the Lord of Winds was incarnate like the Children to come or like Yavanna's kelvar, he would be bleeding all over his hands and the grass around them, Ulmo knew, yet he suppressed the thought as soon as it came. He didn't want to imagine Manwë like that.
A Vala cannot be slain. He will recover. He will be fine, he kept telling himself like a mantra.
"And if Melkor comes back, I will–"
"Don't harbor such thoughts, Ulmo. I don't want to see you getting hurt," Manwë said, gingerly closing his fingers around his.
"If you stay with me for a while, that will be more than enough."
"As you wish."
His fëa warm with fondness, Ulmo leaned down to place a small kiss on his brow.
"Rest now, my lord."
Neither of them knew how long they stayed like this. Ulmo kept holding on to Manwë's hand and hummed a quiet lullaby for him, hoping to ease the pain and soothe him with the song of his beloved sea. His friend appeared to doze off after a while, exhausted from fighting against his mighty brother, and entered a trance-like state. “Sleep”, as Irmo and Estë called it. A strange concept for most of the Ainur, most of them laboring ceaselessly to shape Arda for the Coming of the Children, yet it seemed as though even the mightiest spirits needed to rest at times.
Lost in his thoughts as he beheld Manwë's sleeping form, Ulmo didn't notice Varda approaching them until her fána materialized in front of him, bright and luminous as always. He had half a mind to lift his arms to shield himself and his friend from the brilliant radiance of her light, but kept himself from doing so. It would be rather rude of him, he supposed.
"There he is," Varda said in lieu of a greeting, looking down at Manwë. The light of her fëa was dimming with worry and Ulmo immediately felt guilty for carrying him away on his own without letting any of his fellow Valar know. With Manwë's song nearly quiet for the moment and the chaos Melkor left behind, Varda must have lost track of his presence.
"I came here when I heard the two arguing, but by the time I found Melkor Manwë was nowhere to be seen and he wouldn't tell me what he did," she informed the Lord of Waters and knelt down next to her sleeping husband.
"So did I. I found him injured on the slopes of Aulë's mountains and brought him to a safer place," Ulmo explained, feeling like he needed to justify himself even though Varda didn't seem angry at all.
"It seems that was for the better," she said with a nod of approval. "Thank you, Ulmo. I will take him back home now."
He didn't want to leave Manwë's side, to stop holding him and to let someone else take care of him, yet he forced himself to let go of his hand and start making his way towards the ocean once again, away from his dearest friend. Varda was his spouse and the Queen of the Valar, reminded himself, so he would have to respect her position and her authority even if it sometimes pained him not to be near Manwë like she was.
"Melkor might still be lurking somewhere. Take care," Ulmo warned.
"You need not worry. I will be prepared," Varda said.
"Very well."
Despite telling himself that she probably didn't mean to, her reply sounded condescending to Ulmo. He hid his displeasure by letting his fána dissolve back into the sea, turning around just one more time before diving back into its depths. Varda was gently coaxing Manwë out of his slumber, engulfing his slowly healing fána in starlight as she wrapped her arms around him and kissed him.
Ulmo felt his friend's fëa reaching for his, confused that he was gone, but he didn't answer, submerging himself as well as his song within his element. It was probably better for him to leave and not interrupt their moment. He had already done everything he was supposed and permitted to do. It was probably sinful of him to wish that he was in Varda's place right now, but he couldn't help himself at times.
I will visit him in a few days to make sure he is well, Ulmo decided, though he knew already that one of Eä's most powerful spirits, assisted by the greatest healers among the Ainur, would be fine. Surely no one could begrudge him visiting his closest friend in this world after such an occurrence, not that Varda or any other Valar had ever tried to keep him away from Manwë.
Until then, all he could do was weave his song into Arda's waters in hopes of protecting him as well as all the other Ainur who lived on Almaren.

@maquiscursed sent: "freminet?" lyney pokes his nose into the door leading to his brother's workshop - a sheepish look on his face, an apology already written all over near-feline features before he even articulates it out loud. freminet has a good heart (for those he cares about), and he knows what he has to say will earn him a tired sigh at most (he hopes), but... hey, it still doesn't make it easier, not even after all these years! "sorry to interrupt you while you're on pers' maintenance but... lynette has somehow broken the laundry machine again." the magician sighs, hand rubbing at the back of his neck. "don't ask me why she even approached it, i have no clue! anyway, could you come and help me fix it? it's huh - it's leaking. everywhere. i think the younglings are thinking about turning the room into a kiddie pool...."
Freminet startles when the door opens, surprised by the sudden interruption of the relative silence that's engulfed him for the past hour or so. There are a number of things lying on the desk before him that require fixing but he's postponed taking care of them for now in favor of giving Pers his regular maintenance. Just a few tweaks and adjustments here and there, nothing major, but somehow he still ends up losing sight of time - a fact he only becomes aware of when Lyney pulls him out of his concentration and he notices how dark the room has become around him.
"Oh.." he says quietly, recalling that the last time he fixed the machine was not that long ago. He doesn't blame his sister, however, although it wouldn't be the first time that it broke because someone handled it too roughly or incorrectly. It's an old machine and despite having repaired it multiple times by now even Freminet can't fix every broken part of it. As much as he dislikes the thought, sometimes there's too little left to fix. "I'll come with you."
He puts Pers down onto the desk and slips off his chair to join Lyney by the door, grabbing his box of tools on the way. He feels bad leaving his friend behind like this, half-open and unfinished, but with an imminent problem like this it would be irresponsible to prioritize Pers. "Maybe it's the pipe again," he suggests, already thinking of all the parts and places he'll check first. "I'll try to fix it quickly - if the others play in the water they could catch a cold, right?"

Why You Need a G3 Qualified Engineer Near Me for Your Megaflo System
When it comes down to performing maintenance, servicing or a repair on your Megaflo hot water system, hiring the correct professional is key. Under the UK building regulations anyone involved in working with an unvented hot water system must be G3 qualified including works on a Megaflo. When searching online for a G3 qualified engineer near me, it is important to know what this qualification means, why it matters and how you will benefit from having one.
What Is a G3 Qualified Engineer?
A G3 qualified engineer is a professional who has completed special training and certification in safely working on unvented hot water systems, like Megaflo. They work with systems that are highly pressurized and have to be dealt with extreme caution due to risks of scalding or even explosions. The G3 accredited persons were taught how to maintain these systems safely, installed and legislatively.
Why is G3 Qualification Important?
G3 is not an industry standard, it's a legal requirement for any engineer who works on unvented hot water systems. One of these systems has to be installed, serviced and repaired by a G3 qualified engineer. It requires safety features, seizure release valves, and relief vessels, engineering security checks regularly to avoid accidents. When you look for a ‘G3 qualified engineer near me’ you guarantee that your system is worked on by someone who has the expertise at their disposal to help keep you safe, whilst also maximizing the efficacy of your Megaflo unit.
Benefits of Hiring a G3 Qualified Engineer:
1. Safety and Peace of Mind
One of the primary factors in hiring a G3 qualified engineer is safety. Unvented hot water systems are a more complex system than the traditional vented systems, and when not properly handled can pose serious safety risks. A G3 qualified engineer is able to ensure that your Megaflo system operates safely, preventing dangerous levels of over-pressurisation or leaks.
2. Professional Service Maintenances & Repairs
With a qualified G3 engineer, you are relying on their expertise; they will know what to do if your system isn't running properly. From a minor fixing job to an entire system servicing, they will make sure that the Megaflo System operates efficiently and lessens the chances of breakdowns and extends the life span of the unit.
3. Adherence to Building Regulations
Utilizing a G3 qualified engineer in fitting your Megaflo system ensures compliance with the relevant building regulations. When you decide to sell your house, this becomes particularly important because if the local authorities come to check and find your home not compliant with council laws, it may well influence how easily your house sells. When the job is done, a G3 engineer will give you your designated certificate to assure you that your system complies with the law.

6 Books About Shingle Roofing Contractor You Should Read
Best Roofing Materials for Eastern North Carolina Homes
Climate Considerations in Eastern North Carolina
When selecting roofing materials for homes in Eastern North Carolina, it's key to consider the local climate. The region is known to have hot summers, milder winters, and occasionally severe weather events like hurricanes and heavy rainfall. These conditions require roofing materials that can withstand the high temperatures, repel water efficiently, and resist wind damage.
How To Save Money On Integrity Roofing Wilmington Nc
Asphalt Shingles: Popular, Practical and Popular
Asphalt shingles are among the most popular choices due to their cost-effectiveness, durability against the elements, and relatively easy installation process. They come in a variety of colors and styles that can complement any architectural design. Certain asphalt shingle products have reinforced nailing zones that can better withstand strong winds. This is a vital feature for homes located in hurricane-prone regions.
Metal Roofing: Durability and Resistance
Metal roofs have gained popularity thanks to their longevity--often lasting 50 years or more--with minimal maintenance requirements. They reflect solar heat and keep homes cooler in the summer. Moreover, metal roofs offer superior resistance to wind uplift and can be an ideal option for coastal home protection against storms.
A Trip Back In Time: How People Talked About Metal Roof Installers 20 Years Ago
Single-Ply Roof Systems: Low-Slope Solutions
Single-ply roofing systems are ideal for homes with low-sloped or flat roofs. These roofs are common in modern designs and can also be found on additions such as sunrooms or porches. TPO (thermoplastic Olefin) and EPDM (ethylenepropylene diene monmer) are both lightweight, yet durable materials that perform well in Eastern North Carolina.
Sustainable Roofing Options
With growing interest in sustainable living practices, homeowners may consider green technologies such as vegetative roofs or installations of photovoltaic products like solar shingles on their rooftops. These options not only reduce a household's carbon footprint but can also improve insulation and lead to energy savings over time.
Tile Roofs: Resilience and Aesthetic Appeal
Clay and concrete tiles add distinctive aesthetic appeal to a home while offering resilience against harsh weather conditions. Tile roofs are a heavier option that requires structural support from the frame of the building. However, they are non-combustible with excellent thermal properties to help regulate indoor temperature throughout the year.
10 Best Mobile Apps For Shingle Roof Repair Near Me
To put it short, choosing the right roofing material for your Eastern North Carolina home hinges on balancing factors such as climate resilience, energy efficiency, aesthetic preference, sustainability considerations, and budget constraints. Each material has its own unique set of benefits. These should be carefully weighed against these criteria to make an informed decision tailored for individual needs and local environmental requirements.
History of roofer
Roofers, also known as roof mechanics or roofing contractors, are skilled tradespeople who focus on the construction of roofs. They work with various materials such as shingles, bitumen, metal, and single-ply roofing systems to replace, repair, and install roofs on buildings. The profession requires not only a good understanding of different roofing techniques and materials but also attention to safety due to the inherent risks associated with working at heights.
Historically, the role of a roofer has been crucial in both residential and commercial construction. Roofs provide protection from weather elements like rain, snow, sun, and wind; thus, ensuring that they are well-constructed is vital for the integrity and longevity of a building.
Roofers must meet certain education and training requirements.
Most roofers learn their trade through apprenticeships or on-the-job training.
Physical fitness is required for many jobs, as they require heavy lifting, climbing ladders and scaffolding, bending frequently, and working uncomfortable positions.
Roofing can be seasonal depending on the local climate conditions.
Globally:
According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 129.300 roofers employed in the United States as of May 2022.
Roof carpenters are roofers in Australia. A roofer is someone who installs the roof cladding.
Roofing trends vary by region with materials like asphalt shingles being popular in America whereas other parts of the world might use more tile or thatched roofs.
Safety is a significant concern for those in this profession due to high rates of accidents associated with falls from elevated surfaces:
OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration), for example, has strict regulations that mandate safety practices such as fall arrest systems to protect workers against serious injury or death.
According to the BLS data cited below, fatalities among roofers caused by falls significantly exceed the averages for https://vespars.com/contractors/roofing/wilmington-1/osprey-roofing-company/ all construction professions.
Solar tiles, for example, are a new trend in this field that offers homeowners tax incentives and reduces energy costs.
Lastly:
The job outlook suggests modest growth within this profession over time with most opportunities arising out of need for replacements rather than new positions.
Metal roofing installations have become increasingly popular which reflects changing consumer preferences towards more durable roofing solutions.
Anyone considering entering the roofing field or hiring a professional should be aware of both the historical context and current standards/practices that impact this occupation today.
