I'm looking at you with my big wet eyes... Vex Grian? Or maybe Watcher Cub?
(Reblogs do more than likes!)
“This is your fault.”
Cub rolled his eyes– eyes? So many eyes, how did Grian deal with this all the time– and turned to face Grian. Not that he really had to. He could see Grian, could see through him, could see him from all angles and man did that get annoying real fast. “A scientist’s work is never finished, Grian. You know this.”
The kaleidoscope of Grians crossed their arms, glaring at Cub. Oh, but he did look dashing in that shade of blue-gray, soulless eyes staring into two of Cub’s own. “Surely you can’t be liking this. You don’t even know how to focus!”
“A minor inconvenience,” Cub dismissed, trying to settle on at least two eyes to see out of. They didn’t even have to be a part of the same pair, was he really asking for so much? “I’m sure it’ll calm down soon enough.”
“Soon enough? Soon enough? I don’t want to be stuck as a weird little vex thing forever!” Grian threw his arms up into the air, sending Cub’s vision spinning. Up, up, up into the ceiling, the sky, gazing down from above while he still was looking at Grian from the side, the front, below. “You need to fix this, now.”
Cub raised an eyebrow. It was strange, seeing himself do that. “My, my. You’re demanding today.”
“Well, forgive me for wanting my body back!” Grian paused. “Well, not my body. What did you take? My soul? No, that belongs to Mumbo, and maybe Scar. So… my magic?”
Cub shrugged. “Kinda, man. Kinda. It’s tough to explain.”
Grian groaned, slumping back into his chair and burying his face in his hands. “Oh, this is a nightmare. I’m dreaming– ow! And I just poked myself with these stupid claws!” He was back to glaring at Cub. Cub was glaring at himself? No, just looking out of Grian’s eyes. “Cub…”
“Yeah, yeah. I’m workin’ on it, man. Calm down.” On the bright side, it was very hard to lose things now that he could see everything. Cub grabbed his pen and began to write.
(Ask game!)

#my art#it’s mako mermaid au time let’s fucking go. but I ignored the iconic tail design from the show for reasons of fun.#grian#pearlecentmoon#geminitay#impulsesv#jimmy solidarity#goodtimeswithscar#cubfan135#so pretty much how it starts is: Grian Pearl Gem Impulse and Jimmy are all mermaids. Scar and Cub work at a marine tours/museum type place.#cub’s in the museum area and scar leads diving tours off the mainland. they decide to look around the island to see if there’s anything the#should propose adding to the museum or tours. they spend the night and Scar falls into the moon pool. he gets dragged back to the surface#and figures it was a really weird dream so he and Cub go back to the mainland. meanwhile Gen Pearl Impulse Grian and Jimmy are freaking out#about what to do because a random human just fell into the moon pool during a full moon. they end up getting kicked out of the pod to go fi#this mess. Pearl ends up getting a moon ring from (undecided likely mermaid watcher character) and they end up getting legs via magic.#shenanigans ensue. it’s summer so they’re pretending to be tourists. and no they aren’t trying to track Scar down to kill him. just make hi#not a mermaid anymore. he probably won’t die from it. cub ends up finding out about the whole ‘scar is a mermaid’ thing pretty quickly and#decides to help out. especially with the whole hiding it while doing diving tours thing. more characters do appear but this lot’s the main#cast of the au.#by the way. fishy order is: sand devil shark- epaulette shark- orca(not a fishy)- clown loach- eviota sigillata- and guppy’s

Hello God, Cub/Scar/Grian Fanfic. Watchers/Chaos series
Hello God
Cub/Scar/Grian Watchers/Chaos fanfic written by ChalicePumaSway
Edited 8/23/2024. Corrected Cleo's pronouns.
Cub retreated from Grian’s companionship after the Permit Master Event. He needed to get the death and chaos energy he had collected into the vessel before too much loss had occurred. He stepped through the sculk at his base, a spot no one would suspect led to his inbetween world.
He passed door after door of worlds he had conquered. The smell of rotting dragon flesh and smoldering beds tickled his nose. He finally cross into his chaos domain.
His vex wings popped into existence as he floated down the meticulously created vessel for storing the chaos energy he had been instructed to collect by Upper Management. He stood there watching the images of Cleo’s drowning and False being shot by a pillager with his name, the other deaths passing deeper in to the vessel getting lost in the energy before he could watch them in their entirety.
He floated up on his vex wings and touched the markers where Total Chaos had added an abundance to this. He passed the marks where the Sculking of the Empires world had been far more successful than even he had imagined. The energy had continued to flow long after he stopped having access to that world.
He paused at the platform on the top of the vessel. He looked over his Chaos Domain, bits of worlds he had spent years in dwelled here along side this machine. A world full of wool and banners had given a small room of chests and walls covered in strange symbols. He added a copy of Joel’s strange banner to that setting with a wave of his his hand. A red stone machine sliced down the center with half missing with notations on signs like a diagram of human anatomy. On the platform itself strings pulsing with energy flowed into the statues of those most important in this machine.
First was closest to his heart, Scar, his brother in one world, lover in another. No matter the relation there was a deeply profound connection that seemed to extend out into a world he had only glimpsed. This connection was always there, by choice or compulsion it was all the same.
The second was Grian, the fallen Watcher, and war author. This connection was almost as important as Scar and in some ways more so. In the battle between chaos, True Chaos, and the Watchers with their sick games, only Grian and him truly knew what it meant to be on the battle front.
The third was Martyn, a favorite of the Watchers. He had come to Cub when the Blazeling, Tango, had drawn more of the Watchers food together in Decked Out the Sequel. Those who had truly loved the Blazeling’s game, Etho, Pearl, Scar had been some of the best food the Watchers had known. Tango’s own suffering at the hands of the Watchers was on full display in the Frozen Citadel. Martyn had seen the chaos in Cub and his ability to best the Blazeling’s mad world and had chosen him as a mentor. Cub needed more to his connection with Martyn but he trusted in time.
The fourth was Skizz, the soul from which the boogeyman had spawned. His own POE along side Scar. Another bit of food the Watchers loved so terribly much. The connection there was stronger than Martyn’s but he was only a pawn of the Watchers and was no favorite. Cub still felt he had chosen well, for Skizz’s soul held chaos better than anyone besides Scar and Grian. Even Martyn had appreciated it.
He stepped outside the circle of his four chosen souls to those just off the platform. Those he was nurturing but hadn’t quite manifested enough connection in one manner or another to be adding to the platform. They would serve their own purpose in the future and each had been chosen as carefully as the center four.
Cleo, undead and vex were close in many respects. Their burning of the dark oak grove and their vengeance on BigB were beautiful moments he would have loved to collect. Their connection to the Watchers was merely a pawn and his strongest connection to them was as an adversary. Such moments as their museum battle caused such lovely distress as people’s builds lost entire pieces and bits of history were battled over and sought. As friend it was few and far between when they worked together. Perhaps one day that would change.
Pearl, another pawn of the Watchers, her skills were growing legendary, was there nothing she couldn’t master? If she could best him at pvp and soon redstone then he would have to consider her a rival in all worlds. Perhaps she could even stop him. Her victory in the Watchers game was as devastating and bloody as he himself could hope to have.
Mumbo, a pawn of the Watchers and a fondness of Grian’s. His skills in many ways were changing. What to expect from him next was perhaps an explosion in competitive behavior. Perhaps not, it had never been his strong suit. Cub had tested his blood thirst with the new mace, it was a puzzle as much as an item of death.  He would see where Mumbo’s recent chaos in the shopping district with the billboard, and his shop protests would lead. He had stood against Doc, so perhaps….perhaps.
Speaking of Doc, his connection to the Watchers was non existent, but his Chaos and passion for Destruction was legendary. He saw in Cub the same things, accusing him of the silliness with the ore snatcher. Doc did not know all the worlds open to Cub and the grand scale of his works. Cosmic machines were his passion and the smallness of the ore snatching seemed so limited but had intersected with his Labyrinth which he respected and hated all at once. His Labyrinth had produced a small amount when Jevin got caught in it. Not enough for the effort he had invested in it but he would need it in the future.
For Now was the time. Upper Management had placed him with Skizz, Grian, and Scar in the Permit Office for the final push. A black shirt, gold name tag, red tie, and khakis  had been enough to insert him where he could do the best chaos. Vex magic in X’s shop and the hurried energy of a deadline had done its job. The Permit Master had finished it. Now was the time and place. They had said he would know where to go with this when the time came and he did.
He stepped back into he circle of the platform and grabbed the strings connected to the four. He wrapped two strings over each hand. He slid the cover over with his foot and dropped into the center of the vessel, which held years of accumulated chaos energy. It surged through him and his form changed. His skin went gray, his grin spread wide, wider than his face into his skull, eyes glowing white. A golden cap slid down with stripes between his eyes and a scratchy beard covered withered pale skin. The infection of sculk flowed from underneath the cap down his face and neck over his arms and down his legs. His white eyes glowed blue and the infection pulsed. In rapid succession he began to change quicker through all the competitive forms, silly, cute, and clever. The rapid pulse of change slowed and stopped with a crown on his head, shades over his eyes, and golden beads over a navy t-shirt. The crown slid off into the chaos around him and the beads shattered into colored dots that shot back at his face and torso. His lab coat and multicolored splatter shifted back into the black shirt and tie and khakis he started with. Only his green eyes sparked with blue and white light.
He screamed and pulled hardest on the strongest string as the world began to shift and change. Purple eyes peered at him from outside the vessel, a friendly pair at first, but more and more of the purple eyes, many murderous and hungry eyes. The Vex and Sculk in him flared a blinding darkness and those eyes closed and only the friendly eyes remained.
He dropped into a desert with a sandcastle atop a mountain. He looked around and saw no one. Two familiar voices came closer. He saw a ravine between them and him. With a quick flash he hid it from sight.
“Sorry buddy, we need you to die here so I can move forward.” He spoke the words softly, a tiny chuckle dropped out of him at the word sorry.
A scream followed by Grian calling out to Scar yielded the proper amount of flow for him to move forward.
He floated behind Etho standing on a pillar, fishing rod in hand. The two voices below them bantered back and forth in an excited state.
Cub leaned forward to Ethos and whispered “Now…..Kill Scar.”
The fishing line surged forward as Etho’s cry of the Boogyman’s triumph filled the air.
The energy pushed Cub forward once again.
He stood over Scar as he peered into a massive collection of zombies. He grinned a second and tosses a wind charge at his friend. Into the pit of zombies he went.
Scar and Grian’s cries echoed as the energy lurched him unstably forward.
He stood behind Martyn as Impulse and Scott began to shed their gear. Martyn shuddered and turned. He looked up at Cub with eyes wide. Cub grinned his Vex smile.
“Ooops too far ahead.”  With a puff of smoke he was gone. He moved back to Grian relieving Scar of his last moments, plunging a sword into him. The death shot him ahead the final time.
He floated down on the Watcher’s statue or as it was called here, the Secret Keeper. Books piled on the ground around a frantic Scar. Cub’s own form was corrupted by the travel through the worlds. He was a patch work. The left side of his face was covered in sculk with blue eyes, the right side was grey with white eyes, his mouth covered in a beard, his black shirt and khakis were covered in dye splatters but his gold name tag was pristine.
Scar had yet to notice him. He flexed his blue corruption over grey hands and produced a golden apple. He chomped down on it and used it to regain some of his strength.
Scar turned at the sound and the sunflowers on his cape seemed to perk up. “Hello God.”
                “Hello my boy.”
“I wish you were real Cub. I am really lonely.” Scar looked back down at the books around him, picking another one up and a shudder went through his shoulders after mouthing the words again.
Cub stepped off the statue and slowly floated down on a horizontal angle. He continued to eat the golden apple and watched Scar pick another book up and do the same mad motion of reading it.
“I did come all the way to see you, you could at least pretend I exist. “ His Vex side grinned so wide it went around the back of his head and touched the sculk side on the back.
Scar looked up and blinked at him once, then twice. “I could, couldn’t I? Best conversation I’ve had in ages. Would you like to see my sunflower fields?”
“Of course buddy. We can wander around the whole server and you can tell me about murdering your mother and father.” Cub was still slowly floating down as Scar stood up and brushed his flowers into a less disheveled state.
A voice called from above Cub. “No no no you can’t play into Scar’s illusions and madness it will only grow.”
Cub turned while floating down and put his hand behind his head as if comfortably laying on an invisible bed. Above  him with purple wings and eyes Grian rested on the statue he just jumped off of. “I blame you for this I hope you know. Instead of killing him you took on Gem and the Scotts and completely drained yourself of power while whittling their hearts down to next to nothing. Forcing Scott Major to give his life to Gem.”
“ugh, don’t blame me, blame Pearl for helping him win. I would have killed him earlier if I had ANY idea he would not only survive but not kill himself after the first book generated.” Grian swung his legs back and forth, purple symbols dancing around him and the one on the Secret Keeper glowed purple then red.
“I do blame her as well. Her power grows. So quick in fact she will be a threat to us both before we can really prepare for her. Imagine a war fought on two sides instead of just between True Chaos and the Watchers.“ Cub landed softly on the ground, resting there without moving or shifting position as if he had planned this all along, the buttons between him and Scar. “Scar dying on purpose has always been his weakness. He dies on accident all the time and has never properly learned how to die intentionally.”
“Hey! Is that true? Do I not know how to suicide?” Scar had come to lean on the win button which popped out another book.
“Brother, lover, friend, you would be dead already if you knew how. Instead of sitting here in your own madness waiting for me to come reclaim this part of your vex soul.” Cub popped up onto his feet in a smooth movement and took Scar’s face in both hands, grey and covered in blue sculk.
“You can’t kill him, Cub. The Watchers have him here and have been feeding on his misery for ages now it seems.” Grian said all this as a matter of fact but his face turned into a sad sorrowful pout.
The rage and wrath in him began to bubble, the other parts of him slid off onto the ground, a beard’s worth of hair, a golden name tag, and colorful splatter ringed the ground around him and some of it got onto Scar’s sunflowers. In its place a monster made completely of Vex and Sculk rose. The vex wings bubbled with sculk, antennae grew from Cub’s head and his mouth turned into a horror mask of a scream, his eyes disappeared into a vex grin that replaced them. He roared and Grian recoiled for a second. Cub flew to face off with Watcher Grian, his wrath formed a sword in one hand and an ax in the other.
Grian stared at the monstrous form before him.  His Watcher part flared strongly and his wings grew large with eyes all over them, his body became speckled in eyes as well. Cub could not see and therefore the Watcher powers  were ignored as insignificant. He heard all the blinking of the eyes and reached out with his darkness powers and blinded all the eyes.
“Your KIND trapped a Vex ALONE here for ages! We die easily it is NOTHING TO US. To be separated from other Vex Souls or other SOULS to bleed and torment, and to feed on that misery!?! NOW THAT is a DECLARATION OF WAR! I am here to RESPOND IN KIND. I am READY FOR WAR, WAR AUTHOR. You WRITE WARS as if they are STORIES TO BE READ.  Here I am to PROCLAIM YOUR BLINDNESS has led to your DOOM.” The words poured from both mouths, the loud screeching from the Vex Mouth and the deep rumbles from the Warden face.

the complicated and highly silly worldbuilding/headcanons of mumbo k jumbo:
Seasons 2-8: ‘Human.’ Absolutely not human though. Like this man just doesn’t know he’s a shapeshifter. It’s not like he has a reference for what humans are though? No one on HC is. At least not that he thinks is human? Because there’s no one on hc that’s like him. Clearly shows signs of being a shapeshifter. Clearly shows signs of his shapeshifting abilities being able to affect others temporarily, too. He changes form, or someone else does at his hands? It’s just the Narrative/Story Magic/Builder’s Magic!
Season 8: multiple things happen at once. The most noticeable, the soul stealing thing. He knows but only actually processes afterwards that grian never was human in the first place, a real testament to exactly how crazy his perspective is. Boatem meeting is called, they figure out Mumbo’s a shapeshifter and probably has been the entire time they’ve known him, and then Scar goes, “what about the vampirism?”
Season 8, continued: “What do you mean, ‘what about the vampirism?’” says the other four members of boatem, mumbo loudest of all.
Season… I don’t know. maybe before hermitcraft, even. or somewhere between season 2 and 5. Mumbo is bitten by a vampire. Mumbo is a shapeshifter who is a human at the time, so it looks like nothing changes. It’s kind of an awkward exchange, but they both go about their day like nothing happened. mumbo doesnt figure out that vampire was actually a vampire.
Season 5 sometime: Mumbo is in his base. the Convex are spying on him. Mumbo is quite clearly a vampire but he is still very much under the impression he is human. he’s accidentally shapeshifted into his vampire form, but is clueless. he probably just thinks his base is lagging out his mirror. The Convex know mumbo’s a vampire, and have seen him as such, but he seems human next time he’s seen
And, if we’re feeling extra silly, though this one’s optional (listen. none of this is set in stone.): Post-moonfall, the void. The dormant Watcher abilities gained from the soulsteal awaken, or at least begin to.

"Oh, Grian, hey!" Scar smiled at him charmingly. "I see you've been hitting the books here at the archives! You learn anything interesting?"
Tumblr media
Grian sighed. "Yeah, but it's been slow going. I swear, you'd think the library would be better organized than this with how many researchers are going through there. I keep finding multiple copies of the exact same book, but with minor changes. One of them had an article about a guy who lost their cat by the crater before finding it again."
"Oh yeah! That was Jellie!"
Tumblr media
"Jellie?"
"Yep, that's my cat!" Scar's expression turned nostalgic, clearly thinking back to the incident. "She went missing a few months before the whole explosion happened. Turns out a guy from the lab named Cub found her wandering around and brought her home. The poor girl was clearly traumatized by something over there, cuz she hissed at any plants she saw for weeks afterwards!" He sighed, shaking his head. "I had to get rid of all the plants inside the house, but I didn't really get why until all those glowy things started sprouting around town everywhere."
Tumblr media
"This Cub guy, you said he worked at the lab?" Grian's eyes lit up with the potential new information. "Are you still in contact with him? Is he still around?"
"That's a lot of questions at once! Uhh... Yes, he used to work at the lab, I still speak to him sometimes? But no, he didn't stick around after the explosion happened. He was quick to pack up and leave town after everything went down. I get most of my information from him, though." He smiled sheepishly. "Er, I don't know if he'd want me sharing it with you, though, so don't tell him if you meet him."
Tumblr media
"Your secret's safe with me, Scar." Honestly, Grian didn't intend to tell anyone where his own information was coming from, and he didn't expect to meet this Cub person if he wasn't in town. "But right now, I'm looking for some new information. I don't even know if it's related, but you know the town pretty well, right?"
"Well, certainly! What do you want to know?"
Tumblr media
"I was wondering if you knew anything about angels in Strangerville."
Tumblr media
"Angels?" Scar's expression changed instantly, his smile vanishing. "You mean, like... in the bible or something? I dunno if there's many churches around here, but-"
"Not biblical," Grian interrupted. "At least not as far as I know. I mean angels here, in Strangerville."
Tumblr media
Scar took a moment too long to plaster a smile onto his face, but Grian saw right through it. "Hah, that's a good one! Angels aren't real, you know-"
"I saw them, Scar!" Grian stared directly into Scar's eyes, not letting him break eye contact. "I saw them the other night, directly above the archives! And I know I'm not crazy, you wouldn't be avoiding this so much if you didn't know what I was talking about!"
Tumblr media
Scar was silent for a moment, before heaving a sigh. "Look, Grian, you really shouldn't have seen them in the first place. Most people can't see them at all. I don't know how you saw them-"
"But I did! And you know what they are, don't you? Do they have anything to do with the stuff around town?"
Tumblr media
"They're bad news, is what they are." Scar's expression turned uncharacteristically serious. "Look, nothing good will come from investigating them. If you see them again, just walk away. If they are involved with all... this," he waved his hand in the general direction of one of the plants "then it can't be for any good reasons."
"You really won't tell me anything about them, will you." It was more of a statement than a question.
"No. Look, I'm sorry, Grian, I just don't wanna see you get hurt."
Tumblr media
"Right. Fine." Grian clenched his hands into fists and turned to walk away. "If you won't give me answers, I'll find them myself!"
Scar called after him, but Grian ignored him. Scar was a decent guy, but if he wasn't going to give Grian what he needed to help his sister, he'd look elsewhere for information. Scar had just confirmed for him that those Angels were real, and they might have something to do with all the strangeness. Dangerous or not, maybe he could find information about them that could help Pearl.

I think you can get a lot of Leo's character by knowing that he views the foefire curse as something he desperately needs to rid the land of for the sake of the Ghosts of Ascalon, rather than doing so for the Charr

hitman au save me .. its been seven years ..
Tumblr media
haven’t been able to draw/write much of this au lately but i want to write a few little scene snippets i have stored my brain :’D ill include them under cut
=+=
“This better be something good,” Scar muttered to Cub as they stepped out of the elevator. The hitman, while bound to his contract, considered ‘boring’ missions to be a waste of his time.
“I hope so,” Cub hummed. “Hope so.”
The ConVex swung open the doors to the NHO conference room, not bothering to check if their bosses were actually ready for their meeting.
“Holy mother of—! Knock next time, will you?” A man setting files down on the conference table jumped visibly as the doors slammed open.
“The Vex require a dramatic entrance, Beef,” Scar said casually. Cub snickered.
“Sure, whatever.” Beef furrowed his brow, used to this behavior. He didn’t have time for this. “Okay. Doc was supposed to do this briefing, but he’s busy with his machines I guess, because of course he is, so.” He huffed, composing himself. “Your new top-secret project. This one’s a doozy. Have a look.”
Beef slid the folder across the table. The hitmen flipped it open, absorbing its contents with hungry eyes.
What caught their eyes immediately were the photos. The person of interest looked nothing like a powerful crime boss or a dangerous anomaly. A young adult with glasses, dark eyes and short, sandy brown hair stared back at them.
“Who’s this?” Scar raised an eyebrow. Is the NHO asking them to assassinate some normal-looking university student?
“That is Grian,” Beef explained, both hands planted firmly on the table. “Grian has been with us at the NHO for months.”
“I’ve never seen him before,” Scar remarked.
“Grian’s case is top-secret. He’s been staying in high-security, private quarters… as well as our research laboratories.”
“I thought you guys seemed super suspicious lately! I knew they were hiding something from us, Cub,” Scar nudged his partner with a grin. Cub did not budge as his sharp eyes combed through the documents. He hadn’t heard a single word spoken to him.
“Cub? What’s the deal?” Scar asked. He preferred to let Cub read their mission files and summarize it for him, anyways. Dyslexia and top-secret government files were not a great mix. Oh, what would he do without Cub?
“Watchers?” Cub finally spoke, looking up at Beef with a quizzical frown. The other man nodded slowly. “You’re kidding.”
“After months of testing and analysis, we can confirm that this individual is the only currently documented case of a mortal possessing Watcher abilities,” Beef nodded slowly.
Scar had heard whispers of the Watchers only a handful of times. As a vex, he knew plenty about the realm of magic, the divine, the fae, you name it! But Watchers were said to be ancient entities, perhaps as old as time itself. So old that they were widely considered to be a myth.
“So this is not a hit,” Scar said after a moment.
“This is not a hit, Scar, good lord, do not kill this person,” Beef put both hands on his forehead and let them slowly drag down his face.
“Mortal, you say?” Cub raised an eyebrow.
“Yep,” Beef said. “She was a completely normal citizen until he got these abilities in some freak accident. Lucky for everyone involved, the NHO was able to take control of the situation before anything… dangerous happened.”
“So,” Scar narrowed his eyes slightly, “If this isn’t a hit, then what do you want from us?”
Beef sighed. “After months of testing to determine Grian’s situation, the NHO has decided that he is too important to return to life as a normal citizen at this time. Instead, we’d like to utilize his abilities in our goals to maintain order in Hermit City, and we need someone to train her how to be a special agent in the field.”
“You want the ConVex to train a Watcher how to be a hitman,” Cub said with a slight smirk at just how insane that sounded.
“Yep.”
“Huh.” Scar put both hands on his hips. “Well, that’s not what I was expecting.”
“I suppose we could give it a shot,” Cub said. Although the ConVex were bound by a fae contract to work for the NHO, the vex took every opportunity to feign control over their situation. There was no choice here. Beef had given them an order.
“Sure, sure! We are very good at our jobs, after all,” Scar grinned. Whatever happened, good or bad, would at least be entertaining, surely.
“You’ll come back here to meet her tomorrow morning,” Beef instructed. “Hand me that file back and be here by 9, will you?”
“Sure thing,” Cub replied coolly, sliding the file back to the man. Scar couldn’t help but grin wider when he noticed Cub’s hand casually in his pants pocket, some folded white paper barely visible in his grip.
“Don’t be late. I’m serious this time,” Beef called out as the hitmen turned and exited the conference room.
=+=
The conference room was tense that morning. Towards the end of the table sat the NHO - Beef, Doc, Etho, and Bdubs. On one side sat Cub and Scar. Across from them, Grian sat alone.
“So, how about introductions?” Doc clapped his hands together. “Er… Cub and Scar, this is Grian. Grian, this is Cub and Scar. You guys already know the deal. Grian is going to come with you on missions from now on.”
The ConVex hadn’t taken their eyes off of Grian since they entered the room, unable to resist their curiosity. They had both read the files, but still found it hard to believe the person before them was a Watcher. Grian sat rigid in his chair, fiddling with his hands, looking tense and exhausted. She eyed the vex curiously as well.
“Well hello there,” Scar greeted. “I’m Scar, and this is Cub.”
“Hey, hey,” Cub said quietly.
“Hello,” The corner of Grian’s mouth twitched in a possible attempt at a smile.
The three continued to stare at each other until Bdubs cleared his throat.
“Wonderful introduction. Now that we’ve broken the ice, let’s talk about your next mission.” The man picked up a small remote, and the large screen on the wall behind them illuminated.
“Before we send our agents out into the field, we meet like this to discuss the details and ensure that the mission is clearly understood,” Doc explained to Grian, throwing a disapproving glare in the ConVex’s direction.
A lengthy file on some high-profile criminal appeared on the screen, as Bdubs proceeded to read off the information. Scar slumped back in his chair. These mission briefings were the worst. It was time to zone out and have Cub tell him the details later with all the fluff cut out.
At about ten minutes in, Scar yawned absentmindedly.
“Oh, are we boring you, sir?” Doc interrupted Bdubs to shoot a piercing stare at Scar.
“Oh, not at all!” Scar said cheerfully, but slumping in his chair slightly lower.
“As I was saying,” Bdubs continued loudly.
Scar glanced over at Grian. Her eyes quickly darted back to the presentation when they made eye contact. Scar looked over at Cub and found he had still not taken his eyes off of Grian. Hopefully Cub was at least somewhat paying attention, because he sure wasn’t.
Grian continued to fidget with his hands. Scar felt a pang of pity for him. The vex were used to this sort of environment, but according to the NHO, Grian had a completely normal life up until a few months ago. Now suddenly, he gains these terrifying powers and spends months in a top-secret lab having tests run on her all day. Who wouldn’t be overwhelmed?
Scar yawned again, this time more intentionally. He earned another death glare from Doc, but Bdubs droned on. He glanced over and saw Grian rubbing a hand on his cheek to help hide a grin.
The art of annoying your boss was a delicate one. Timing is everything. Let enough time pass until they’ve forgotten, or they think you’ve stopped, to continue the game. Scar lets about ten minutes pass before his next yawn, bigger this time.
“Quit it,” Beef hissed. Even Etho glanced over. Doc kept his eyes on the screen, but his jaw was clenched. Grian let out a cough that sounded suspiciously like a laugh.
Five minutes later, Cub clears his throat rather loudly. Bdubs stutters over his words for a second, but because Cub is Cub, none of the NHO seems to be able to tell if that was a deliberate cough or not, and they decide to ignore it. Cub shows no emotion.
After an hour that felt like an eternity of Bdubs explaining every possible detail about the case, it seemed to be almost concluded. That was, until a rather loud yawn was heard throughout the conference room.
“WILL YOU LET ME FINISH, FOR GOODNESS SAKE?!” Bdubs finally erupted, whipping around in his chair to face Cub and Scar.
The hitmen stared back blankly. They glanced over across the table, and Bdubs followed their gaze, where Grian sat with both arms over her head in a large stretch.
“Sorry,” Grian said simply when all eyes were on him, lowering his arms. “Just had to stretch a bit.” He stared back at Bdubs innocently.
The NHO stood there, confused. Bdubs was at a loss for words, unable to get a read on the new recruit. He sighed and turned back to the screen. “Well, regardless, I think we’ve about summed things up,” he grumbled.
Scar made eye contact with Grian once again. The two cracked a smile at one another for a second, too quick for the NHO to notice.
Scar had a feeling that him, Cub and Grian were going to get along just fine.

so which characters do you personally head cannon to have wings
Other than Grian, the only other hermit/life series character that I headcanon as having wings is Cub! Although he keeps them tucked away most of the time. He and Scar are both infused with Vex magic, but Scar got his wings removed at some point.
Tumblr media
As for commonly headcanoned wing havers, here's my headcanons:
False is completely human so has never had wings. But I feel like if she made a statue or painting of herself it would have wings (long way of saying her fursona is a bird of some sort)
Jimmy has some unwelcome watcher traits that he tries to ignore. Though he doesn't have wings (yet...) he does occasionally wake up from confusing prophetic doom dreams surrounded by feathers
Skizz is (surprisingly!) human. However he got wing tattoos based on a joke about being the angel to Impulse's devil. Which Impulse thinks is hilarious (he doesn't)
Tumblr media
Ok and then Grian...oh boy I have a mile long list of headcanons on watcher/evo lore that I will SOME DAY get into, maybe, but its like. Its just so much and made purely for an audience of one haha. LONG STORY SHORT: he used to be human, became a watcher, now has light shapeshifting powers where he can shift between his old human form and his true watcher form. He choses a form that's in between, to his liking. Here's some rough designs of how his wings are attached and my continued attempts to nail down a bird feet design that I like 😵‍💫

Note
every hermit was born human, but they were all adopted in some way by something not human, and it's had an effect on them.
cub and scar were given in a deal to the vex, who raised them.
grian was human until the watchers took him in.
cleo was found dying by a horde of unusually smart zombies, who bit her to give her another chance.
joe was raised by puppets; zedaph was raised by sheep; stress was taken in by the monsters under her bed.
doc hacked himself to be like his creeper family (who were very touched).
ren's werewolf family let him choose if he wanted to be bitten when he became an adult - he accepted without hesitation.
mumbo was adopted by the hermits.
