For a long time, you thought about whether you wanted to actually host a gender reveal party or just tell everyone that you were having a little girl at your baby shower. In the end, though, you decided on the latter. After all, you never really liked gender reveal parties, and you didn’t want to stress yourself out by planning an additional event during your pregnancy.

When you shared your thoughts with Dongyoung, he wholeheartedly agreed, saying, “I never really understood why gender reveals are so popular, anyway. They just seem like a hassle for everyone involved.”

“I mean, I understand wanting to celebrate your baby, and finding out the sex is a huge milestone. I just think it’s more stress than it’s worth right now.”

“I understand, love. Speaking of celebrating our little girl, have you started planning the baby shower yet?”

“I haven’t, but Nayeon and Jisoo have. They’re so excited to have a niece,” you said with a laugh.

A soft smile formed on Dongyoung’s face as he responded, “I’m happy that you have friends like them in your corner. You deserve all the support you can get.”

“Thank you. I love you.”

“I love you too, baby.”

With a smile, you placed a gentle kiss on Dongyoung’s nose. When you pulled away, you noticed a faint blush on his cheeks, and your heart did backflips in your chest. All you could think about as you watched his reaction to the small gesture was how handsome you thought that he was and how much you loved him.

Your thoughts were interrupted, however, by your boyfriend’s voice saying, “Love? Are you ok?”

“Yeah, I’m fine,” you replied, shaking your head to snap yourself out of it. “What’s up, honey?”

“Are you sure it’s ok to bring Jaehyun here to meet you while he’s in town?”

Fuck.

You’d forgotten about the plans you’d made with Dongyoung’s best friend. Jaehyun was staying at a hotel near your apartment building for a few weeks so that he could meet you and catch up with Dongyoung before the baby arrived. If you were being completely honest with yourself, you were incredibly nervous to meet the man that Dongyoung had named his son after. Still, you smiled and said, “Of course, love. Just text me when you’re on your way from the hotel. I’ll do my best to look presentable.”

“You always look presentable, baby.”

“You know what I mean.”

“I do, but have I ever passed up an opportunity to compliment you?”

“No, I guess you haven’t.”

“Exactly. I’ll be back. I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

With that, Dongyoung left your apartment to pick Jaehyun up from his hotel. You’d heard countless stories about Dongyoung’s best friend, and while you were excited, you couldn’t shake the anxiety that planted itself firmly in your stomach after your lover left your apartment.

To distract yourself from your nerves about meeting someone that was so important to the man that you loved, you decided to do a bit of cleaning around your apartment. Nothing too strenuous, since you didn’t want to overwhelm yourself, just a bit of organizing to occupy your mind. It worked better than you expected it to, and before you knew it, you felt much better.

When you heard your door opening and voices filling your living room, you knew that Dongyoung and Jaehyun had arrived. You rushed to put away the socks that you were organizing, then joined them, a bright smile plastered onto your face.

“Hi, my love,” Dongyoung said, “This is Jaehyun.”

“It’s nice to meet you,” you said, the fake smile you wore to conceal your nerves never once leaving your face.

“Likewise,” Jaehyun began. “I’ve heard so much about you.”

“All good things, I hope,” you said with a chuckle as you turned to Dongyoung.

“Of course they were all good things,” your lover responded with a smile. Unlike yours, however, his smile seemed genuine as he watched you and Jaehyun interact.

With a soft laugh, you turned back to Jaehyun and said, “What did he tell you?”

“I’m not sure you wanna know,” he responded.

The jokes cut through the awkwardness slightly, but you still felt nervous around Jaehyun. After seeing him smile, however, you realized that it was different from your typical anxiety whenever you met someone new. It was the same feeling of butterflies in your stomach that you felt the first time you laid eyes on Dongyoung when you saw him at the bar in your hometown on that fateful night.

You loved Dongyoung dearly, but you still had to admit that Jaehyun was incredibly attractive. It was kind of jarring, actually, how good he looked, considering that he presented himself the exact opposite of how Dongyoung did. Your lover always took care to put his best foot forward, with his hair always neatly combed and his dress shirt and slacks always pressed. Jaehyun, on the other hand, was dressed casually in baggy jeans with holes in the knees and a band tee, and his hair looked like he rolled out of bed shortly before Dongyoung picked him up. Regardless, they both looked incredible.

You were snapped out of your admiration by Dongyoung asking, “Are you ok, love?”

You shook your head in an attempt to rid the thoughts from your brain and replied, “I’m alright, honey. Just thinking about some things. It’s nothing important, though.”

“Are you sure?” Jaehyun asked, mirroring his best friend’s concern.

“I’m ok; I promise. Thank you for asking, though.”

Dongyoung and Jaehyun both smiled, and the three of you spent the rest of the day asking questions to get to know each other. You could tell that it was important to Dongyoung that you and Jaehyun got along, so you really tried to make a good impression. Jaehyun was clearly trying to do the same, but he didn’t really have to try. He had the kind of confidence that drew people in, and you couldn’t help but think that you really did like him.

As Jaehyun was getting ready to leave, you asked, “We’re planning a baby shower for some time in the next few weeks. Would you like to come?”

“That sounds great. Thank you,” he replied, pleasantly surprised by the invitation.

“I’ll have Dongyoung let you know when we have an exact date and time.”

“Why don’t I just give you my number so that you can tell me directly?” Jaehyun asked. You were surprised by the suggestion, but you still agreed. Once the two of you had exchanged phone numbers, Jaehyun smiled and said, “It was nice to meet you, by the way!”

“Thank you! It was nice to meet you, too,” you replied.

With that, Dongyoung left to take Jaehyun home, and you were left alone with your thoughts. Sure, you thought about games and party favor ideas for your baby shower, but you also thought about how you felt about your lover’s best friend. Did you really think that he was attractive, or did you just like that he was nice to you? Truthfully, you had no idea, so you decided to do your best to push the thoughts away.

As you worked with Nayeon and Jisoo to plan your baby shower, however, you found yourself getting distracted frequently. Your best friends definitely noticed that something was going on, but they decided not to push you to talk about it. After all, they were fairly sure that you would tell them when you were ready. And, if it wasn’t something you were comfortable talking about, they would still do their best to support you.

When the day of the baby shower finally came, you spent the entire morning feeling like a nervous wreck. Sure, you were excited to celebrate your baby, but you also couldn’t help but worry that something would go wrong. After all, your parents, Dongyoung’s parents, and Jaehyun would all be in your apartment for hours on end. There was no way that you were going to get through the party without any problems, and you knew it.

As guests actually started to arrive, you only felt worse. Regardless of how you felt, however, you put on a happy face for the sake of the people that you cared about. Once everyone arrived, you exclaimed, “Welcome! Dongyoung and I are so happy to have you all here to celebrate our baby.”

“Do you know if you’re having a boy or a girl yet?” your mom asked.

“Well, yes. Dongyoung and I found out at our last appointment. We were planning to announce it today, actually.”

“Why not just have a gender reveal party?” Mrs. Kim asked, every word laced with judgement.

You opened your mouth to answer, but before you could, Dongyoung interrupted by saying, “I didn’t think it was a good idea to plan two separate parties. (Y/N) has been so worried about the baby, I didn’t want her taking on any additional stress. A baby shower can be overwhelming enough to plan without a gender reveal party added on. Isn’t that right, love?”

“Yes, that’s right. Thank you, honey,” you replied, relieved that he’d stepped in to defend you.

Mrs. Kim seemed surprised that her son answered her question on your behalf, as evidenced by the way her eyes widened briefly before she went back to her typical expression of false indifference. It was petty, and you knew it, but you felt a sense of pride when you heard Dongyoung finally act like an adult when it came to not letting his parents treat you like dirt because they had a problem with every little thing you said and did.

Despite the awkwardness after Mrs. Kim’s question, the baby shower went surprisingly well. Everyone loved the games that you’d planned, there were more than enough snacks, and the gifts that everyone brought for your little girl brought tears to your eyes. Your mom made a blanket using the softest yarn you’d ever seen, your dad bought a photo album that was perfect for preserving precious memories, and Nayeon and Jisoo worked together to buy the highest-quality car seat that they could find. Even Jaehyun brought a gift, a small gray teddy bear for your baby to snuggle with once she was old enough. Every moment made you emotional as you thought about how loved your little girl already was before she even came into the world.

After the gifts were all opened, you smiled and said, “Dongyoung and I have one more announcement planned before the games begin.”

“What is it?” Jaehyun asked.

“Well,” you began, “Since we found out at my last doctor’s appointment that we’re having a daughter, we’ve been discussing names. After a lot of careful consideration, we’ve made a decision.”

“What name did you choose?” Nayeon asked.

With wide smiles on your faces, you and Dongyoung answered at the same time and said “Jiyeon.”

Everyone seemed confused about the name, but no one said anything until your mom asked, “How did you choose?”

Dongyoung stepped back to let you explain, “Well, I knew that I wanted to name the baby after someone that I care about, and Dongyoung suggested naming her after a close friend. Obviously, my closest friends are Nayeon and Jisoo. I didn’t want to choose between the two of them, though, so Dongyoung suggested combining their names.”

Your two best friends started to cry, and you pulled both of them into a hug. Once she felt like she could speak again, Jisoo said, “We love you, (Y/N).”

“I love you guys too, if that wasn’t obvious.” You laughed slightly after you spoke, and everyone smiled at the sweet scene that played out in front of them.

After the announcement, you moved on to games. They were relatively uneventful, with the exception of one particular moment with Jaehyun that you could only hope didn’t catch Dongyoung’s attention. The two of you were put onto a team for charades, and he looked at you and said, “Can’t wait to play with you,” with a smile and a wink.

You hated yourself for it, but you couldn’t help but feel giddy when Jaehyun winked at you. Sure, you loved Dongyoung, but you also really liked the attention that you were getting from his best friend. Still, you knew that it was wrong to think that way about Jaehyun, so you did your best to ignore the feeling.

Other than the small moment with Jaehyun, the rest of the baby shower was pretty uneventful. Games were played, snacks were eaten, and not a single moment went by without you feeling loved by the people that you cared most about. You got emotional as you thought about the fact that the love you felt in that moment was the same amount of love that Jiyeon would receive when she finally arrived.

After the baby shower was over and cleaned up, you and Dongyoung went right to your shared bedroom to rest together after the chaotic day you’d had. At least, that was what you thought was gonna happen. Dongyoung apparently had other plans, though. When you got to your bedroom, he immediately pulled you close and kissed you with what could only be described as pure desire. As you felt his lips on yours, you couldn’t help but feel a similar desire start to build.

When Dongyoung pulled away from the kiss, you were left speechless. As you tried to catch your breath, he begged, “Needed you all day. Please?”

In an instant, you regained your confidence, and with a teasing tone in your voice, you asked, “Please, what?”

“Wanna taste you.”

Your false dominance was toppled in an instant when you heard his words. Wanting nothing more than to feel his mouth on you, you asked, “Please?” with your voice barely above a whisper.

“Gladly, baby,” Dongyoung replied with a laugh, amused by your attempt at taking control. “Lie down for me, ok?”

You scrambled to do as you were told, and Dongyoung wasted no time finding a comfortable position between your legs once your clothes were off. He started by softly kissing your inner thighs, and you let out quiet moans at the sensation. Your hands found their way to his hair and pulled, and he groaned against you.

“Fuck! Need more, please,” you whined, desperate to finally feel him where you wanted him most.

“Your wish is my command, baby,” Dongyoung answered, finally starting to gently tease your clit with his tongue. You moaned loudly, bucking your hips up at the feeling. When he noticed what you were doing, Dongyoung groaned against you again, and you only got more turned on from there.

“Fuck, right there,” you whined when he moved his tongue a certain way.

“Here, baby?” he asked before repeating the gesture.

“Yes, holy fuck,” you moaned, pulling his hair as you lost yourself in pleasure.

Dongyoung continued to tease you with his tongue, and you knew that you weren’t going to last long. After all, it’d been far too long since the last time the two of you were intimate, considering how stressed and busy you’d both been. He hadn’t even been between your legs for very long, and you already felt like you were about to break.

If you were of a clearer mind, you would have been embarrassed by how little time it took for your orgasm to start to approach. You were not of a clear mind, however, so all you could think about was how good it would feel to come undone on Dongyoung’s tongue.

With a loud moan, you warned Dongyoung that you were close, and immediately after, you tumbled over the edge into euphoria with a loud moan of his name. You, however, had other ideas.

When you looked up at him with a mischievous smile on your face, he knew exactly what you wanted to do. Still, he decided to tease you by asking, “What do you want, angel? “Of course, love. Can’t wait to feel your mouth around me.”

You made quick work of removing his pants and boxers, and before Dongyoung even had time to process what was happening, your mouth was around him. You moved slowly at first, which he appreciated, but once you started to hear soft moans leave his lips, you started to move your head just a little bit faster.

“Fuck, baby. Just like that. Your mouth feels so good around me,” he said with a loud moan. As he lost himself in the way you felt, his hands tangled themselves in your hair, and he started to thrust gently into your mouth. He tried to exercise some self-control, since he didn’t want to overwhelm you, but admittedly, he struggled quite a bit when it came to controlling himself around you.

Just like you did when your positions were reversed, Dongyoung knew that he wouldn’t last long. The way you moved your mouth up and down his shaft, moaning as you took as much of him as you could, brought him closer and closer to the edge. With anyone else, he would have been incredibly embarrassed by how little time it took him to feel his release start to build, but since you were the one bringing him to the edge, he didn’t care at all.

With one more well-timed swirl of your tongue, you felt Dongyoung release in your mouth and heard him moan your name. Dongyoung, however, was awake long after you drifted off, thinking about some things that he’d noticed during the baby shower. Regardless, he knew there was nothing he could do about it while you were asleep. So, he decided that he would ask you about it when the two of you woke up in the morning.

The next morning, Dongyoung woke you up by asking, “Hey, honey, can we talk?”

“Of course, love. What’s going on?”

“Is there something going on with you and Jaehyun?”

Fuck.

You had two options: you could tell Dongyoung the truth about your newfound attraction to his best friend, or you could completely deny everything in the hopes of pretending that everything was fine. After a brief moment of consideration, you decided on the latter.

“No, of course not. Why do you ask?”

“I noticed the way he was looking at you during the baby shower. Were you uncomfortable, honey? I can talk to him if you want.”

Oh, bless his heart. With a smile on your face to hide your nerves, you said, “I’m ok, honey. Honestly, I didn’t even notice it. I don’t want you to get into an argument with your friend because of me.”

“Alright,” Dongyoung replied, suspicion evident in his voice. “I love you.”

“I love you too.”

After your conversation about Jaehyun, any time spent with Dongyoung was awkward, to say the least. Conversations were short and to the point, the two of you weren’t spending as much quality time together, and he didn’t even let you kiss him half the time. You wanted to say something, anything, to fix things, but you didn’t know what you could say. So, you continued to hope that your relationship would get better at some point.

Just like you’d hoped it wouldn’t, your relationship with Dongyoung only got worse. The moment that it really started to fall apart was the day that his parents decided to visit the two of you at your apartment. You knew that they were coming, since the visit was arranged in advance, but you still felt unprepared when you heard a knock on your door. Regardless, you plastered a fake smile on your face and answered it, and Mr. and Mrs. Kim stood before you.

“Hello!” you said, hoping that your fake excitement was convincing enough. “Please, come in.”

You moved out of the doorway, and Dongyoung’s parents entered your apartment, scrutinizing everything from the color of your walls to how expensive your furniture was. You saw the way that they looked at your bookshelf, like they were trying to decide if you were intelligent enough for their son based on the books you owned, but you decided not to comment on it. After all, it was important to the man you loved that you had a good relationship with his parents.

The tension in the room was palpable, and the awkward silence that settled in your living room only made it worse. Still, you were determined to finally make a good impression, so you smiled and said, “How are you two doing today?”

“We’re fine, thank you,” Mr. Kim replied.

“Can I get either of you something to drink?” you asked, desperate to keep them happy until Dongyoung came home from dropping Jaehyun off back at his hotel.

“No thank you, dear,” Mrs. Kim said, clearly unamused by your attempts to stave off the awkwardness that permeated the room. “We just want to know how you’re doing.”

“I’m fine, thank you. I’ve been much more tired than usual over the past few months, but I am so relieved that Jiyeon is developing the way she should be.”

Both of your boyfriend’s parents looked uncomfortable after you answered Mrs. Kim’s question, not expecting you to respond beyond saying that you were fine. An awkward silence hung in the air as they tried to hide their discomfort, and Mr. Kim was the first to break it by asking, “So, when will my son be here?”

“Dongyoung should be home any minute. He just left to give Jaehyun a ride back to his hotel.”

“Who’s Jaehyun?” Mrs. Kim asked.

“Oh, he’s Dongyoung’s best friend. He’s been visiting for the past few weeks since they haven’t seen each other since Dongyoung and Joy got married.”

The mention of Dongyoung’s ex-wife brought back the awkwardness that you’d tried so hard to get rid of, and you kicked yourself for mentioning his wedding. You desperately wanted to save the situation, since you knew that this visit could make or break Mr. and Mrs. Kim’s view of you, but you didn’t know how. Luckily for you, however, before either of his parents could say anything else, Dongyoung opened the door and said, “Hi, honey! I’m home!”

“Hi, my love,” you replied, moving from your spot to give Dongyoung a hug.

Mr. Kim cleared his throat when he thought that the two of you had been hugging for too long, and Dongyoung immediately let go. With an obviously fake smile on his face and shaky hands, he said, “Hi, mom. Hi, dad. How are you doing?”

“We’re fine, Dongyoung,” Mrs. Kim answered. “Spending more time with the mother of our second grandchild has been lovely.” As she said this, she turned to you with an obviously fake smile of her own.

The small talk continued for what felt like an eternity before Mr. Kim finally decided to say what was on his mind. With a sigh, he said, “Listen, son. We know you say that you love (Y/N), but are you sure that this is what you want?”

“What do you mean, dad?” Dongyoung asked in response. “A life with the woman I love is exactly what I want.”

“You don’t love this woman, Dongyoung,” Mrs. Kim chimed in. “You love the things she lets you do that Joy wouldn’t.”

“That’s not true,” your lover replied, though his voice was softer than when he’d spoken to his dad.

“Isn’t it?” Mrs. Kim pressed. “Your whole relationship started with an affair, right? So, there was something about (Y/N) that you liked that Joy didn’t have. She’ll only be bad for you in the long run, though. I mean, really, Dongyoung. Do you honestly think that you can get another job as a pastor when you’re running around town with a whore like her?

Dongyoung went silent at his mother’s question, not even stepping up to defend you after she called you a whore. So, you decided to defend yourself by saying, “I think you would do well to remember that it takes two to do the devil’s tango, ma’am. Your son is just as guilty as I am.”

Mr. and Mrs. Kim gasped, shocked that you actually had the audacity to talk back to them, another thing that Joy would never have done. After a brief silence, Mrs. Kim huffed and said, “We’re leaving. Goodbye, Dongyoung.”

Dongyoung’s parents left your apartment, and Dongyoung was once again completely silent. However, you were not going to let him get away with not speaking up for you, especially considering the progress he’d previously made when it came to standing up to his parents. So, you asked, “What the fuck was that?”

“I’m sorry! I panicked!”

“You didn’t panic at the baby shower. What was different then?” He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could, you added, “Wait, I know what it was. It was the fact that people were watching, right? That’s all you ever cared about. It’s why you broke up with me, it’s why you married Joy, and it’s why you tried so fucking hard to convince everyone that everything is perfectly fucking fine. Well, guess what? It isn’t.”

“I know,” he replied, sounding defeated. “Can we please talk about this another time?”

“There’s nothing else to talk about, Dongyoung. There’s definitely a lot for me to think about, though.”

“What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”

You ignored his question and spat, “I’m going out.”

“Where the fuck are you going?”

“None of your goddamn business!” you yelled as you grabbed your purse and left.

Once you were out the door and certain that Dongyoung couldn’t hear you, you called Jaehyun and asked, “Are you busy?”

“I’m never too busy for you. What’s going on?”

“Can you meet me at the park by your hotel? Dongyoung and I got in an argument, and I need to clear my head.”

Jaehyun was surprised that you went to him of all people for support after an argument with Dongyoung, but he couldn’t really say that he was upset. He liked you a lot, so he was happy to be a shoulder for you to cry on when you needed someone. Hoping he didn’t sound too excited, he replied, “I can be there in twenty minutes. Is that ok?”

“Yeah, of course,” you responded before hanging up and leaving for the park.

It didn’t take long after you arrived at the park for Jaehyun to show up. When he got there, he pulled you into a hug, and you cried into his shoulder while he rubbed your back. Once he was certain that you were done crying, he asked, “Do you wanna talk about it?”

“His mom called me a whore, and he didn’t say a word.”

“What?”

“His parents visited today after you went back to your hotel. Near the end of the visit, his mom called me a whore. He said nothing. Couldn’t even look at me.”

“I am so sorry, (Y/N).”

“I just don’t understand why he’s so afraid of them. He’s almost 30 years old, for fuck’s sake. He should be able to say, ‘Hey, mom, don’t call my daughter’s mother a whore.’”

“He can’t?”

“No, he won’t. He’s always been that way, though. The whole reason he broke up with me when we were in college was an ultimatum that his parents gave him. If he didn’t break up with me, they were gonna stop helping him pay tuition.”

“He never told me that.”

“I mean, why would he? It would paint him in a bad light, and he can’t fucking handle that. It’s always been about his image for him. Back then, he had to be a model student. After college, he had to be a model husband, a model father, and a model pastor. Now, he can’t have that picture-perfect image that he wants, and I think that’s a problem for him.”

“I am so sorry, (Y/N). You don’t deserve that.”

“I don’t know about that, but thanks.”

“No, seriously. You don’t deserve to be treated like you don’t matter just because he has an image that he wants to maintain.”

With a soft smile on your face, you said, “Thanks, Jae. That means a lot to me.”

A subtle blush appeared on Jaehyun’s face, and all you could think about was how badly you wanted him. Without really stopping to consider whether it was a good idea, you kissed him.

A small noise of surprise left Jaehyun’s mouth when he felt your lips on his, but he also didn’t push you away. It was wrong for you to do this, and both of you knew it, but neither of you could find it in yourselves to stop it. For you, this moment was an escape from your shitty relationship with Dongyoung and a way to finally feel wanted again. For Jaehyun, it was a chance to show you that he could love you better than Dongyoung ever had.

When you pulled away for air, you looked into Jaehyun’s eyes, and you realized that you desperately wanted to be with him instead of Dongyoung. The realization scared you, so you abruptly said, “I have to go. I’m sorry,” and went back to your car. Jaehyun seemed puzzled by your sudden departure, but he said nothing.

When you got back to your apartment, you texted Jaehyun again, hoping to clear the air between the two of you.

Y/N: I’m sorry about earlier. I don’t know what happened. Jaehyun: Did I do something wrong? Y/N: No, I did when I kissed you. I’m sorry. It won’t happen again. Jaehyun: But what if I want it to?

You didn’t respond after that, instead choosing to turn your phone off for the night. Then, you went to bed, crying yourself to sleep as you thought about the mess that you’d gotten yourself into.

Weeks went by, and your relationship with Dongyoung was strained at best. He continued to help you prepare for Jiyeon’s arrival, but the two of you didn’t talk much outside of that. Initially, you tried to have conversations with him in an attempt to bridge the gap between the two of you. Each time, however, you were met with either brief answers or none at all, so you decided to just give up.

Dongyoung finally decided to put a bit of effort in, however, when the final court hearing was over and the order of dissolution was signed, officially ending his marriage to Joy. When he came home from the courthouse, his copy of the paperwork in hand, the first thing that he did was pull you into a hug and kiss you like he was seeing you for the first time in years. You melted into the kiss, enjoying the feeling of his lips on yours, but you didn’t let the feeling distract you from the fact that you were still angry with him.

When Dongyoung pulled away from the kiss, he said, “The divorce was finalized today.”

“Is ‘congratulations’ an appropriate thing to say in this situation?”

“I think so, since this means I can ask you something that I’ve wanted to ask you since we were in high school.”

“Dongyoung what the fuck-”

You were interrupted by Dongyoung getting down on one knee and asking, “Will you marry me?”

To say that you were shocked by the proposal was a massive understatement. Marriage was something that you hadn’t discussed with Dongyoung at all since getting back together, and you honestly didn’t understand how he could possibly think that this was a good time to do it. Between your stress about your pregnancy, your recent fights, and your newfound feelings for Jaehyun, you knew what your answer had to be from the moment he asked the question.

“No, Dongyoung. At least, not yet.”

Dongyoung’s face fell at your answer, and he asked, “Why not? It’s the perfect time, isn’t it?”

“Are you fucking serious? You literally could not have chosen a worse time. I’m going to be giving birth soon! Or did you forget that?”

“Then we can schedule the wedding for after Jiyeon is born,” he responded, desperate to make it work.

“Dongyoung, Jiyeon isn’t the only reason I said no.”

“Then why did you say no?”

“Because we have a lot to talk about before I would even consider marriage. What happens if we have an argument, and you stop talking to me again? What happens if your parents don’t like how we choose to raise Jiyeon, and you can’t stand up to them? What then, Dongyoung? Am I supposed to just sit there and take it? Make our daughter just sit there and take it?”

Dongyoung wanted to say something, anything, to make the situation better, but he had no idea where to start. If he was being completely honest with himself, you were completely right. He was horrible at handling stress, and he knew that he had to get better at standing up to his parents. He really didn’t know how to do that, though. So, he decided to just stay quiet, hoping to avoid escalating your heated conversation into a full-blown argument. The silence only made you angrier, however. You saw his silence as giving up, not even caring about the situation enough to respond to you.

When you and Dongyoung first got back together, you genuinely wanted to believe that your relationship was worth saving. The more you thought about it, however, the worse you felt about staying with him. Still, you decided that you would give him one more chance to say something, anything to prove that he cared. With a defeated sigh, you looked at Dongyoung and asked, “Do you seriously have nothing to say to that?”

“What do you want me to say?”

“Anything to indicate to me that you give a fuck!”

“Do you honestly believe that I don’t?”

You hesitated for a moment before you answered, “I do think that you care about me, at least a little bit, but I don’t think that you care enough about me to put in the effort to actually make our relationship better. I think that you just want to ignore the problems we’ve been having so that you can pretend you finally have the perfect little family that you wanted when we were in high school.”

“That’s not true.”

“Well, I’m tired of waiting for you to prove it to me, Dongyoung. I’m done.”

“Wait, (Y/N), can we-”

“No. I’m done trying to fix things between us. Trying to do this again was a mistake. You have a week to find somewhere else to live. I do not want you in my apartment anymore.”

“I’ll talk to my parents. They offered to let me stay with them after they found out about the divorce, anyway.”

Dongyoung left the room to call his parents, and you finally allowed yourself to cry for the first time in far too long. Deep down, you knew that trying to rekindle your relationship with Dongyoung would only end in heartbreak. Still, you desperately wanted to let yourself have hope that the two of you could be ok. As time went on, however, you realized that your relationship was hopeless.

After Dongyoung packed his things and left with his parents, you called Jaehyun. With a deep breath, you asked, “Can you come over?”

“Of course, what’s going on?”

“We’re done,” you said, hoping that he couldn’t tell that you’d been crying.

“Oh, I’m so sorry, honey. I’ll be there as soon as I can.”

“Thank you,” you replied before hanging up the phone and continuing to sob.

When Jaehyun finally got to your apartment, the first thing that he did was pull you into a hug, rubbing your back as you sobbed into his shoulder, just like you did the night that you kissed him. When you finally felt like you could speak again, you looked up at him and said, “I just couldn’t do it anymore.”

“Hey, I understand. Do you wanna talk about it?”

You shook your head and answered, “Can you just hold me, please?”

“Of course.”

For the first time that day, you smiled as you said, “Thank you.”

The room was silent after that, but it was a comfortable silence, like a warm blanket protecting you and Jaehyun from further strife. Jaehyun was the first to break the silence when he laughed softly and asked, “Can we sit on the couch? My feet hurt a little bit.”

“Yeah, of course.”

You took Jaehyun’s hand and led him to your couch, and once you found a comfortable position, he pulled you close, wrapping his arms around you as if he was trying to protect you from the pain that Dongyoung had caused. In a way, he was successful. You felt like nothing could hurt you as long as he held you close, which you greatly appreciated, given the stress of the day.

While you and Jaehyun sat together on your couch, you talked about whatever trivial things came to mind, like music that made you happy and the things that you were doing before everything went to shit. It didn’t take long for you to get too tired to continue carrying a conversation, though. When that happened, you looked up at Jaehyun and asked, “Can we go to bed? I’m really tired.”

“Of course, honey,” he said, laughing softly.

With that, you led Jaehyun to your room and found a comfortable position on your bed. Once you were settled, he wrapped his arms around you and sighed, delighted to hold you close for the night. As you drifted off to sleep, you found that you weren’t worrying about what was going to happen next. Instead, all you thought about was how safe and loved you felt in Jaehyun’s arms.

Not a huge difference; it's just chopping out all the January through June interaction with my Spider-Man stuff that was already up since the last time I took a stats snapshot before that was 2021.

Published in 2024: 92k words, all VLD!

Written in 2024 but not yet published: 188k words, also all VLD

General new stats in 2024: 128 new work subs (we're so back), 20k new hits, 1.2k new kudos, 94 new comment threads (and i happy screamed at every single one), & 339 new bookmarks (and i crept through every single one with comments or tags attached... like a creep...)

Other milestones: first time writing someone who was Not My Blorbo and having fun with it, first time writing without it being an escape from something terrible, first shipfic, first time participating in a fandom event where there would be Consequences if I'd backed out, first explicit content posted on my main account, closest I've ever gotten to finishing NaNo* with one single project, first time c*mm*ssioning art for my fics, first time learning you have to censor the word c*mm*ssion to avoid getting scam bots in your tumblr DMs (just a huge milestone year actually)

New word count for this year technically doesn't beat my previous record of 315k in 2021, but 1) I was only employed full-time for 5 months of 2021 so I had way more free time then and 2) I didn't write a single word in 2024 before June 3rd, so 280k in 7 months of 2024 feels like a lot more than 315k in 12 months of 2021.

Also since literally no one IRL cares, some non-writing achievements I'm also proud of for 2024! Going in rough order from earliest in 2024 to latest:

Quit the most abusive job I've ever experienced

And immediately got my first job in my intended career field

Finally coded an AO3 stats tracker after 6 years of having it in the back of my mind

Grew my first ever eggplant (it was very small....)

Paid off my car

First semi-solo business proposal presented with a base price totaling more than all of the bids combined that I supported over 2 years at my last job

Made new friends I love <3

Acquired an unquenchable thirst for vld merch....

Went to my first con

And finally as of today, I'm under 89% of my original mortgage balance & on track to own this thing in half the original loan term! (praying this series of words doesn't wake up the sugar daddy bot again, he LOVES when I discuss my mortgage)

Also, some shoutouts for the year! In order of when we first met:

@zelandiangelo for being one of the few OGs I know still around and always being so nice to talk to and supportive. ;_; In case anyone's forgotten, they're the one who convinced me to write and post my first ever hurt/comfort fic and sucked me right back into fandom after I'd been clean for like... six years at that point.

For the record, there are other OGs and I'm glad to see them around! We're just not as close (but you can change that in 2025 ;) )

@hurtwithabitofcomfort for also being crazy supportive through all the fandoms I've been through. I didn't get to shout 'em out last year since I wasn't active on Tumblr then, but they're the one who kicked off me getting back into writing in 2023. I know I didn't SHARE anything from 2023, but they made me see how much I loved writing again around that time when the rest of my life kinda sucked and I was giving up on everything.

@perpetuallylatetothefandomparty for their incredibly nice comments! Deadass, I probably would've just posted my first one or two fics of this year and disappeared for another year or two if they hadn't been such a constant presence this summer, hyping up all the gen fics I was working on then.

@voltrohgodwhat for being so easy to talk to and being the kind of friend where either of us can like... disappear for a month and still be totally cool with each other. Also for sharing WIPs that still haunt me on a weekly basis because they're so unique and good ;_;

@existwound for being too intimidatingly cool for awhile but STILL hyping me up. If you've liked anything I've posted in the past three months or so, you've probably got Astra to blame for brainstorming it with me, letting me ramble about it, giving me fresh ideas when I'm stuck on something, or hyping it up.

@langst for always yapping to me about Klance and ALSO hyping up my WIPs and letting me ramble about ideas. Also special shoutout to El because she got me back into writing sprints and that is the source of a LOT of this recent word count. There is something so special about getting to stomp people's asses as you write.......

I'm not gonna harass all the writers I like who aren't like... people I talk to regularly, but even though this has been a VERY light reading year for me, there's a whole little list of VLD writers who I read over and over and like... instantly got motivation to write on my own fics afterward. If you've been in any of my 2024 fic rec lists, it's you... you are my motivation....

(Also, I am OLD and don't have my incredible teenage memory anymore, so if you see me add someone to the shoutouts later, no you didn't and I'm SORRY for not remembering in the first place.)

And final thing! Goals for 2025!

500k written in 2025: Just a little above my daily average in 2024 when you account for the 5 months I wasn't writing this year. The goal is to keep up the pace I've had since June 2024, but extend it through the full 12 months of 2025. Might be a bit of a reach but hey, I'll be happy to get anywhere near 500k in a year, so it works!

Start posting In Love and Death by the end of 2025: I'm running SO behind on where I thought I'd be with this project when I started, but there is no excuse for this to not be close enough to finished to start posting by the end of next year. Mark my words.......

Continue posting work I love: I fell out of habitually writing the last time because I was writing based on what I thought other people wanted to read and holy shit, it is so much easier to write what I want to read. So I'm gonna keep doing that in 2025. In 2024 we moved between gen whump, semi-shippy whump, and shippy non-whump, and I enjoyed them all because that was what I felt like writing at the time. I'll slide between them all as I feel like it again in 2025.

Prioritize my mental health online: I've mostly gotten through it fine, but every burst of bad mental health that affected my writing this year was a direct result of continuing to follow people who are just plain assholes and ruining my mood for no good reason when I'm trying to enjoy scrolling my dash. In 2025, I'll be reminding myself more often that no one is talented enough to make up for being a dick, and I will be more brutal with the unfollow and block buttons for anyone who's making my fandom experience worse.

Audience is probably a good mix of male and female. Everyone has a crush on Dick Grayson, and everyone finds ‘Nightwing’ hot. Dick’s completely fine with this, and he tries to appeal to everyone with his videos by keeping them pretty ambiguous most of the time.

He definitely does a few male/female-oriented livestreams though, maybe as subscriber milestones or special events. Sometimes he lets his subscribers buy him toys (usually vibrators or cockrings) to use in these videos, or he’ll let them vote on a specific act to do. At first, it’s purely as a confidence boost, but soon the concept of people actually getting off to him really sinks in - then, when he's on cam, he’s imagining people getting themselves off at the same time as him. It does wonders for him.

After this little revelation, he branches out a bit more with his videos. He lets himself be freer vocally (and he’s loud), and when people go wild for that, he manages to push himself to do some dirty talk - saying what he’s imagining, or what he wants to do to his watchers, or describing fantasies. Maybe with a voice modulator, like in his helmet, or maybe without so people can hear how hot he is. Tips start absolutely pouring in at this point.

His audience is around a 40-60 male/female split. He normally keeps the dirty talk pretty ambiguous. Part of his cam persona is being a rough top/dom, so either way, he can cater to his viewers. If he builds a rapport with a certain viewer (someone respectful, who tips well and gets along with him), he’ll definitely consider doing a private stream; he might even switch to his more subby side, for the right person.

Sometimes, maybe once a month, he brings out the leather gloves/jacket. Jason loves the way that people go crazy for it, even though he feels he’s at his most dangerous like that. Possibly even does a few roleplay scenarios - it feels a little awkward at first, but he finds his rhythm quickly, and he really enjoys it. He’s considering branching out into audio porn, too (now that his confidence is soaring).

Yeah, he definitely knows about Dick and Jason’s accounts, and they definitely inspired him to start his own cam account. While he’s never really explored the world of kink, beyond a few things with partners, Duke’s absolutely open to branching out. It’s all good fun, after all. The Invitation System is Here!

We are excited to announce the next phase of our open beta arrived at the end of November! All Pillowfort users have the ability to generate free registration codes to give out to your friends! The introduction of the invitation system allows our community to grow at a steady pace and to help us test our server capacity in a controlled manner.

Now Hiring Web Developers!

We’re looking for well-rounded Web Developers to help Pillowfort become a first-class platform. If you are interested in helping Pillowfort grow and improve and you have some professional experience in front-end and back-end web development, we’d love to speak with you. You must be familiar with Ruby on Rails and Javascript. AngularJS experience is a plus but not a must.

This position is remote and part time, hourly contractor work.

Tasks include, but are not limited to:

Fixing bugs and developing new site features.

Testing new release builds/QA.

Both front-end/UI and back-end development.

User Account Changes Update Post-Mortem

Before the release of our invitation system, we introduced a change to our user accounts requiring users to input their birthdate. Details on the changes that were made are available in this announcement. In previous updates of this nature we usually provided ample time before a change was implemented, but unfortunately our team pushed this update with little notice in our effort to get the invitation system out quickly. The staff at Pillowfort are still passionate about continuing to build a bridge of communication and retaining transparency with our users. We sincerely apologize for not announcing the user account changes sooner and we will strive for better communication and keeping transparency with our users in the future.

We will be creating a separate discussion post soon where users can leave feedback and suggestions on the new user account changes. Stay tuned for when the discussion goes live.

Our team is currently reviewing our Terms of Service. We are not planning to add or significantly change any of the terms, but rather make clarifications to how the Terms of Service is applied to user content, including NSFW content, in the upcoming months. The clarifications are being made to help users with questions and concerns about our current verbiage regarding some of our policies. Before any clarifications are made, we will make an announcement with the updated terms and when they take effect.

Proposed Changes to Communities: Coming Soon

Our team is exploring changes to Communities to improve user experience in 2020. We will be announcing proposed changes and taking feedback from the community in the coming weeks.

Developer Update

Now that the invitation system is released, our team is re-prioritizing what features & improvements we need to make before Pillowfort can exit beta. We are also beginning to lay the groundwork for our site-wide UI Redesign. December will be quieter in terms of updates than previous months while our developers plan and prepare for our upcoming development projects.

We have had an increase in inquiries as of late regarding the status of our mobile app. While we do plan to create a mobile app, we are currently prioritizing the stability & development of the browser site. Our team does plan on creating a mobile app in the future when funding allows. We will be updating our donation page in the near future to include milestones we need to reach for certain goals such as adding more developers to the team, creating a mobile app, and more.

At Pillowfort, we do not receive any funding from venture capital or other outside investors because we are committed to keeping our user experience a priority, and not being beholden to outside interests. Pillowfort has been entirely user funded since the beginning. Because users are no longer required to pay for a registration link, we will be largely dependent on donations to help us pay the bills until the release of our Premium Features Suite which is currently in development. We need your help. If you would like to support us, you can make a one-time or monthly payment to Pillowfort to help keep the lights on here. Any money donated to us now will be applied as a credit to your account when we release Pillowfort’s Premium Features Suite.

Growing Pains and a Mabari (Part 1)

This is a collection of little snippets of Alistair’s life in Redcliffe told from the perspective of Teagan, who is my darling beloved babycakes.

It’s Alistair and dogs in Redcliffe, with the addition of Teagan’s perspective on some of the events and people who all end up drastically changing Alistair’s life. Here’s Part 1!

A Ferelden’s first dog. A milestone in every Ferelden child’s life. It really went without saying, Teagan thought.

So, when he decided to go visit his little nephew – yes, even though Alistair wasn’t actually Rowan’s child, Teagan still considered the boy his nephew – after dinner one evening and discovered that a young mabari pup had taken an interest in young Alistair, Teagan was delighted.

This particular pup was a feisty little thing who had all the stable hands wrapped around her little paw. Her name was Joanna, but everyone called her ‘Her Ladyship’ because of her sometimes demanding behavior.

She stood a safe distance from the young child, watching curiously as Alistair experimented with those strange appendages known as ‘legs’. After a moment, she seemed to finally have plucked up enough courage to trot curiously over to the pair, and investigated with a healthy sniff. When Alistair didn’t push her away, she snorted and nudged him. Alistair went toppling over, rolling onto his back helplessly. Even as he moved to help the child right himself, Teagan fought back laughter at the sight of those big brown eyes widening comically as Alistair tried to register what had just happened.

Her Ladyship yipped playfully and nudged at Alistair again as Teagan sat the boy up. Alistair blinked and reached clumsily for her, but she rolled out of reach.

Excited by his reciprocation, Her Ladyship began to bounce back and forth, her little stub of a tail wagging wildly. Through it all she continued to bark encouragement, impatiently waiting for Alistair to take some kind of action.

For a moment it seemed as though Alistair wasn’t going to respond. He simply stared at the playful dog, eyes wide but ultimately blank. But when she crouched down onto her belly and began to crawl herself forward as though in pursuit of prey, a tiny laugh bubbled out of Alistair’s throat. He reached out to bump his hand against her nose, and Teagan held him steady before he could threaten to overbalance himself.

For several minutes, the pair played an unusual sort of tag game, until Alistair began wiggling impatiently in Teagan’s grip.

“You want out, do you?” Teagan asked in response to Alistair’s increasingly dissatisfied whines. “Very well, have your freedom, vagabond. I warn you, though, Her Ladyship is a force to be reckoned with.” He placed Alistair on all fours and released him to the hound. Immediately, the whining stopped and Alistair focused all of his attention on moving his right arm. Her Ladyship stood about two feet ahead of him and yipped. Alistair giggled.

And promptly fell over.

Teagan laughed and set him right again. Alistair gurgled and immediately renewed his efforts to move his right arm. But this time, Her Ladyship interrupted, coming closer to sniff curiously at him. Noticing that her nose was close enough for him to reach, Alistair shifted his attentions to moving his left arm, seeming to forget that his right arm was still in the air.

Again, he toppled. Again, Teagan laughed and gently pulled him up. Again, Alistair set to the task of moving himself.

Teagan watched in silence, intervening only when necessary to keep the infant from injuring himself, an unabashedly fond warmth rising in his chest. Maker, you’re turning into an old man…

“Teagan?” Teagan started, turning to see his brother enter the room, the confusion in his expression rapidly morphing into amusement at the sight before him. “Well, well, what have we here, little brother?”

“Oh, stow it, Eamon,” Teagan grumbled, hiding his flush under the guise of watching Alistair. “I didn’t want the boy to maim himself, and I’ve no better place to be.” Behind him, Eamon chuckled.

“Of course, Teagan, of course,” he replied in a mock serious tone. “And I’m sure the servants would have done a poor job of watching after him, as they’ve done for several months already, so really you’re only doing what’s best for the lad.” Teagan turned to glare at his idiot of a brother, but he could hardly keep the smile from his face, not when dealing with the adorable sight before him and his brother’s happy expression.

“I’m glad you understand,” he said with an air of playful condescension. “I was afraid I might have to break it down even more for you.”

“I’ve always been quick on the draw, you know.” Eamon came to sit beside him, easily scooping Alistair into his arms, much to the child’s surprise and delight. “And how’s this strapping young lad?” Alistair shrieked his happiness, flailing his arms toward Eamon as he was bounced gently. Teagan grinned.

“We were almost crawling today,” he said, reaching for Her Ladyship before she could vocalize her displeasure at losing Alistair’s attention. “And Her Ladyship over here was feeling very playful. Weren’t you, my girl?” She barked in response and launched herself abruptly at Teagan. He allowed himself to fall onto his back, tussling with the dog as seemed to be her demand. Beside him, he noticed that he and his play partner seemed to have arrested Alistair’s attention.

Pushing himself up onto his elbows, Teagan took hold of his enthusiastic charge and levelled Alistair with a serious look. “This could have been you, you know. I saved your life by taking that blow from this vicious hound. I hope you realize the severity of—” At that moment, Her Ladyship escaped Teagan’s hold and jumped right on his head. “Ack! Hey, no, stop!”

“Ha!” Eamon laughed. “Teagan, I’ve always said you have the best luck with the ladies!” He bounced Alistair on his knee and whispered playfully to the boy as Teagan struggled to extract himself from the dog’s hold.

It took only a few moments for Her Ladyship to calm, and when she did Teagan looked over to his brother. He looked absolutely content with Alistair in his arms.

“Why don’t you just claim parentage?” Teagan asked after a moment’s hesitation. “The rumors already have you pegged as his father anyway.”

Eamon’s face hardened for a moment, and Teagan fought back the urge to apologize and change the subject. It was a logical question to ask and he was hardly a boy anymore. He waited in silence for Eamon to answer.

“It would cause a scandal,” Eamon replied evenly. “I don’t want to put a child through that.”

“Oh, come on, Eamon.” Teagan pushed himself up and gave his brother an incredulous look. “There’s already something of a scandal, with all these rumors, and if anything, it would calm people down about who’ll take over the rule of Redcliffe after you.”

“The confirmation that I have a bastard child with some servant of my house before even having married will help settle people?” Eamon shot Teagan a glare, disapproving as he placed Alistair on the floor. The boy began attempting to crawl again, Her Ladyship thankfully distracting him from the Arl and his brother’s irksome discussion. “I’m afraid to say I don’t think it would turn out that well.”

“Well then why not send him to Rainesfere?” Teagan fired back, before he could stop himself. Eamon’s head snapped around sharply at the suggestion, his eyes cold. Teagan forced himself to continue. “You could avoid the rumors, and he could be raised knowing at least that—”

“No, Teagan,” Eamon interrupted. “It was decided that Redcliffe would be safest for Alistair, and I stand by that decision. He will stay here.”

Teagan’s brow furrowed and he pressed his hand to his side to keep his fingers from twitching.

“So that’s it, is it? The boy’s just going to grow up thinking he’s some servant’s son whose greatest aspiration is rising to take the place of Head Stable Boy?” Teagan’s voice was rising in frustration. Eamon’s eyes flickered warily to the door and back, but Teagan ignored him. “Eamon, he’s the king’s son! Illegitimate or not, that means something! You can’t just – you can’t lie to him about that!”

“Who ever said I planned to lie to him!?” Eamon demanded. Teagan hadn’t heard him sound so forceful since the days of the resistance. His mouth snapped shut almost instinctively at the sound.

Alistair, startled, tried to turn toward the source of the shout, but – predictably – lost his balance. He lay on his back, reaching blindly for his toes and gurgling up at Eamon.

Eamon swallowed roughly at the sight and reached out to pull Alistair back into his arms. He pressed a kiss to the crown of the infant’s head and Teagan felt his frustration alight anew.

His brother was practically father to his boy already. Teagan could see how much Eamon cared for him, and he’d been instructed to keep Alistair safe, and the true nature of his heritage secret. Why then not just confirm the rumors that Alistair was his son? Redcliffe already seemed enamored with the idea of Eamon having some secret love child; it was an enticing topic for gossip, and no one really gave a damn about Eamon’s secret love so long as she wasn’t Orlesian, elven, or a mage. So why not just—

“Teagan.” Teagan started at the sound of his brother’s quiet voice, drawn out of his thoughts. Eamon was looking down at Alistair, a maelstrom of emotions at war in his expression. Teagan waited, somehow humbled. “He will know. I give you…” He paused and forced a smile onto his face, gently tapping Alistair’s cheek. “And you, my lad… I give you both my word that Alistair will know the truth of his heritage. I simply—I need to think how I’ll…” Eamon cut himself off and let his head fall forward. He held Alistair closer to his chest.

“When he learns the truth, he’ll have to keep it a secret. There will be so many questions he has.” He swallowed. “No child should have to bear the burden of such a secret, nor the weight of such questions.”

The silence that followed Eamon’s words pressed hard on Teagon. He hadn’t realized how much his brother was struggling with this. He opened his mouth to say something, thought better of it, and closed it again.

What could he say? They were bound by their promise of secrecy. Reveal the truth and Rowan’s reputation would be attacked and Alistair would be targeted as a symbol of kingly infidelity. Maintain silence and all would be well, but for Alistair, who would have to keep this knowledge quiet for the rest of his life.

Either way, Alistair was the one who suffered.

Eamon rose to his feet, Alistair in hand, and turned away from Teagan.

“We’ll talk later,” he said stiffly as he made his way to the door. “Enjoy your evening ride.”

Once his brother was gone, Teagan groaned and dropped his head to his hands. A tiny whimper caught his attention and he looked down to see Her Ladyship nudging almost nervously at his boot.

“Oh, come here,” he grumbled, scooping her up into his arms. She whined and squirmed around to lick at his face. Teagan smiled sadly. “Are you trying to make me feel better, rascal?” Her Ladyship yipped and continued bestowing her kisses. “Well, I appreciate it.” The smile fell and he looked to the door. An easy lie or a difficult truth.

Teagan fell back to the floor and stared blankly at the ceiling.

It wasn’t like this issue was particularly troubling right then. Alistair was still an infant, and he wasn’t aware of the quandary his adoptive family – and Eamon in particular – now found themselves.

But it wouldn’t stay that way forever. Soon, he would have questions and concerns, and would perhaps wonder at the nature of his parents and origins. And when that happened, the choice to keep secret or reveal his heritage to him would matter.

Teagan pulled in a breath and held it for a moment. When his chest started to tighten, he exhaled in a rush. He lifted Her Ladyship in his arms and set her with a stern glare.

“You’ll watch over Alistair, won’t you, girl?”

She yipped and licked his nose.

“Do you swear before the Maker?”

She yipped again and tossed her head.

“And before His Bride?”

One last time, Her Ladyship yipped and nuzzled his hand. Teagan smiled and placed her on the ground.

“That’ll have to be good enough for now,” he said, scratching behind her ears. Her Ladyship playfully nipped his fingers and promptly skipped her way out the door after Eamon and Alistair.

End

This turned out sadder than I thought it was going to be… Oops…

Just a few notes on Teagan: keep in mind, he is still fairly young at this point, and has only been the Bann of Rainesfere for about a year (meaning he would be 19/20ish, and Alistair is still a wee infant). He’s getting used to life as a political and respectable figure, but he’s still a young man who is very passionate about the things he cares about. And sometimes, he doesn’t quite think before he speaks. I tried to write him so that he had the seeds of some decent points but ultimately failed to get them across well.

Meanwhile, Eamon is struggling with how to raise Alistair, and Alistair likes dogs and hasn’t quite mastered the gross motor skill of crawling yet. Breaking news at 6.

Anyway, this is all leading up to Alistair getting sent away to the chantry, so we’re all aware of how it’ll end up and Alistair’s emotional state when we get there. But there will be happy moments too! Somewhere...

Get things off your mind quickly: no matter what app you’re in, a keyboard shortcut instantly reveals Quick Entry. Type your thoughts and save them to the Inbox. Or just talk to Siri on any device (“Remind me to…”) and import from Reminders.

Get Organized

Create a project for each of your goals, then add the steps to reach them. For clarity, add structure with headings.

Then group your projects by areas of responsibility, such as “Family”, “Work”, or “Health”. Review these regularly to stay on top of things.

All-New Design

The all-new Things sports an all-new design. Not just how it looks – but also how it works, and how it feels. The interactions are delightful. The animations are smooth. The content is more structured. The concepts are clearer.

Beautiful To-Dos

Just take a look at the basic building block of Things – its to-dos. You immediately get a sense of how the new apps feel. When you open a to-do, it smoothly transforms into a clear white piece of paper, ready for your thoughts.

If you like, you can add more details (tags, a checklist, a start date, a deadline), but those fields are neatly tucked away in the corner until you need them. There are no distractions here, it’s just you and your thoughts.

Design Is Not an Afterthought

It’s a way of building apps, and we live by it. There’s a lot of thought, and trial, and error, that went into making these new apps simple to use while at the same time putting in all the powerful features.

You’ll notice this in every corner of the app. The new apps are not mere iterations of what came before, they are a whole new app experience.

Today and This Evening

Once you’ve made your plan in the morning, the Today list is your go-to place for all daily activities. Calendar events now display together with your to-dos, giving an outline of your schedule.

Calendar Events

Decide which calendars you want to see in Things: Personal, Family, Work, and more. The events are neatly grouped at the top of your Today list. With your to-dos below, your whole day is laid out before you.

This Evening

There are often to-dos you won’t get to until later in the day – such as things you can only do when you get home. So we added This Evening, which allows you to keep these to-dos separate from the rest, in their own discrete list.

Upcoming

Plan your week ahead with the new Upcoming list. It shows everything on your agenda for the coming days: scheduled to-dos, repeating to-dos, deadlines, and calendar events.

A quick peek at this list is all it takes to stay on top of your schedule – and if your plans change, re-scheduling your to-dos is as easy as drag and drop.

Headings

Large projects are easier to complete when you can break them up into smaller parts – just add a few Headings!

Divide and Conquer

Use headings to create categories, milestones, or whatever you need – just give each one a name and drag your to-dos underneath. Instantly you’ve got a nice, clean structure for your list, and the plan becomes perfectly clear.

Keep It Together

Headings are a true productivity booster. Not only do they give you a nice visual structure, but you can now easily rearrange whole groups of to-dos simply by dragging and dropping their heading. And when you’re done, archive your heading and all of its to-dos for future reference.

Checklists

Some things take several steps to complete but don’t require a full-blown project. For those cases we now have checklists, which help you break down the finer details of a to-do and outline precisely what’s required to get it done.

Use a checklist when shopping for a list of ingredients, or when packing your bag for a trip. Or use it at work to detail a process so you won’t miss a critical step. You can even paste in a bulleted list from another app and Things will convert it to a checklist for you.

Magic Plus

The new plus button adds some magic to every interaction. As you’d expect, tapping it creates a new to-do. But now comes the magic: if you want to insert your to-do somewhere else, simply command the button where it should go! Lift it up with your finger, drag it into place, and let go.

Create To-Dos Play

Insert a new item right where you want it: drag the button to insert a to-do at the right place in your Today list, or under the right heading in a project, or add a new to-do to the right day in Upcoming. Everything becomes so seamless – it’s magical.

Create Headings Play

When you’re inside a project, the Magic Plus has another skill: creating headings! Just drag it to the left margin and let go.

Drop to Inbox Play

No matter what list you’re in, you can send a new to-do straight to your Inbox – with a single, consistent gesture and without ever leaving the list. Simply grab the Magic Plus and drop it on the Inbox target that appears to the left.

Quick Find

Search and navigation in Things is now extremely fast, with Quick Find. All you need to do is swipe down in any list and start typing – the name of a project, to-do, or tag – and instantly you’re taken there.

Quick Indeed

To hold its promise, Quick Find needs to be – quick. We’ve built it so that the moment you hit a key, the results show up instantly. And as you keep typing, the search results update blazingly fast, narrowing your search on the fly.

App-Wide Tag Search

Need to find all your “Errand”s, or everything you need to discuss with “Kate”? Quick Find’s got you covered – it automatically detects when you’re typing a tag and lets you pull up an app-wide filter in milliseconds.

Insert Things Anywhere

You’ve already seen how convenient it is to insert new to-dos anywhere you like with the new Magic Plus button.

Super Fast Multi-Select

When organizing a long list, you’ll need to select many items at once. No problem! When you’re in selection-mode, just swipe your finger up or down the circles on the right to select a whole group.

Drag to Reorder

When you have a multi-selected group, just tap and hold. The to-dos will gather under your finger and you can drag them wherever you want. Let go and they’ll fall into place. Beautiful.

All Together Now

It’s now just as easy to act on multiple to-dos as it is to act on one. That’s because swiping a to-do not only shows you the actions you can perform, but it also immediately enters multi-select mode. Selecting more is just a tap away.

All of these features are incredibly simple and perfectly obvious once you’ve used them – it is pinch-to-zoom all over again. Take our word for it: this will forever change the way you feel about list editing on your iOS devices!

Timely Reminders

One of Things’ most-requested features is here: time-based reminders! For those to-dos you absolutely cannot miss, adding a reminder will give you peace of mind. There are three ways to set the time.

Click

While scheduling a to-do in Jump Start, click “Add Reminder” and set the time.

Type

Our new natural language date parser understands time as well. Type “Wed 8pm”, and you’re all set.

Speak

Or you can speak to Siri on your iPhone: “In Things, remind me to call John at 5 AM.” Since reminders are time-critical, we’ve enhanced Things Cloud with a special new feature: Fastlane.

It pushes newly set reminders to all other devices instantly (rather than waiting for the next routine push) to make sure all devices are up to date.

Slim Mode

Introducing Slim Mode! Collapse your sidebar with a two-finger swipe to cut out distractions and focus on the task at hand. This is also great when you’re working in split view, or if you just need more room on your screen.

Slim but Powerful

Just because you’re in Slim Mode doesn’t mean you’ve got less power. You can still easily switch lists by clicking the window title – or just use Type Travel!

Collapsible Sidebar on iPad

On the iPad, you can also swipe away the sidebar and focus on just the current list you’re working in – both in portrait and landscape orientations.

Multiple Windows

Things provides a wonderfully flexible work environment on macOS. Open multiple projects in their own panes and drag to-dos back and forth between them to organize with ease.

Use multiple displays? No problem! You can open different lists on each one. Same with desktop spaces and split views – whatever suits your personal setup.

What’s New

This update accompanies our 3.8 release for iOS, which brings Dark Mode to our mobile apps. On your iPhone and iPad, you can now choose between three beautiful appearances – Light, Dark, and Black – or have it switch automatically based on your display brightness.

Here on the Mac, where Dark Mode was added in 3.7, some users requested an extra option to run Things in Light Mode even when the operating system was set to Dark. This is now possible from the View menu. This update also includes various other fixes and stability improvements.

Added Quick Entry support for the Brave web browser.

Added support for tagging/untagging an area via keyboard shortcut while editing its title or tags in the right pane.

Added support for Cmd+Return in all tag fields.

Enabled the Cmd+Ctrl+T shortcut to reveal the tag management window while using Quick Entry.

Switched to light scrollbars while in Dark Mode.

Improved handling of dragged or pasted URLs with titles.

Changed how links to files and folders are formatted in the notes of projects and to-dos: we now show the full path.

Changed how clicks on file and folder links are handled: rather than opening them directly, the target is revealed in Finder.

Away games are always the hardest.

Soft, whispered I love you’s while his team is asleep and a sparse string of FaceTime calls are nothing close to fulfilling. You miss your boyfriend desperately, but more so, you need him.

“I’ll be home tomorrow baby, you can hold out one more day can’t you?” Sakusa sounded exhausted on the other end of the line, each syllable dragging forward. You strain your ears to make out what he might be doing. You hear the small jingling of keys and the shuffling of his jacket.

You whine in response, standing in the living room of your shared apartment that feels distinctly cold and empty without the smell of lemons and astringent. You cross your arms over your chest, bunching up the fabric of his t-shirt. Every inch of your skin is on fire at just the sound of his deep voice, not being able to touch yourself in Sakusa’s absence makes any word falling from his lips disastrous to your resolve.

“I r-really,” you sniffle, wiping a stray tear from where it escapes, “really need you, daddy.”

Sakusa coos in your ear at the sound of your whining, he can imagine what you look like, swimming in one of his old t-shirts with your thighs pressed together tightly. You aren’t the only one who’s desperate, evident in the tightening of his slacks and the shaky sigh that leaves his lips.

You're too distracted by the warm sound of his voice to notice the front door unlocking behind you. The wood swings open and your back is met with the cool, winter’s air.

Prototyping and Content Creation: Together in the Dark postmortems

In Month 7, I worked together with my classmates on a multiplayer horror game called Together in the Dark. Here is my individual postmortem for the project, as well as the team postmortem below: Stephen Rodrick Individual Postmortem

I found myself in a producer role this month in Prototyping and Content Creation class while working on Together in the Dark. Lester Frederick, our instructor for Project and Team Management, has a saying that rang true for me throughout this project. “Lead, follow or get out of the way.” I used all three of these methods when I felt they were appropriate. Our team has three members who were development focused. I filled in the gap on the administrative side by taking lead on creating necessary team documents. I organized team meetings, including initiating availability conversations, scheduling the meetings and reminding the team about them over Discord.

The story I will share now and in the future about this project focuses on how the six of us came together as a team. We are all talented individuals. Each of us has strong-willed personalities and in most cases, we value and voice our strong opinions. In some cases, this can give rise to long-winded debates where a few team members are passionately discussing how to do a certain thing or what would be best. One of my strengths is that I know when to politely interrupt these and suggest a compromise that will result in us continuing our work. In these cases, I try to consider the strengths of each person’s perspective. My goal is to merge these viewpoints into a course of action I can succinctly articulate to the group. I then ask if we can all “slap the table” (one of Riley’s phrases) and move forward.

An example of this was when the group was deciding whether to continue developing networked multiplayer for Together in the Dark. The team member focusing on networking shared his experience and voiced some reasons why it would be good to continue developing this system. Other members voiced their concerns about time constraints. After ten minutes of discussion, I chimed in with my suggestion for moving forward. What I said was something like, “[Team member who worked on networking] you have done an awesome job learning about networking and applying it to our game. Unfortunately, with the time we have left in this class it is unlikely we will have it completely working. Is it ok if we table networking for now and switch over to split-screen multiplayer? We can always bring networking back in to the project for month 9 if we revisit this game.” Thankfully our team member was understanding and we focused on having split-screen multiplayer ready to go for our final deliverable.

Together in the Dark Team Postmortem

Three Aspects That Went Well

The brainstorming phase was cooperative and smooth. We spent fifteen minutes dishing out ideas. Then we weeded out the weak ideas and expanded on the interesting ones. It was a strength that we combined our favorite ideas into a single concept. We incorporated hide and seek, monster horror, and tag. Since this phase went seamlessly, we could quickly jump into prototyping our concept.

We are proud of our physical prototype. Rather than using pen and paper or our prototyping kits, we took an innovative approach. We created two Google Draw documents: one for the Monster and one for the Survivors. Both documents had the same map. Two team members were designated as facilitators for a playtest session. They would update the boards will relevant events and player character positions. The Monster player would search through rooms on their document. The three Survivor players would run around the map on their document, hoping to evade and hide from the Monster. If a Survivor was caught by the Monster, they were converted to another Monster. That player would switch to the Monster document and try to hunt down Survivors. The prototype allows for the users to fully understand the concept and theme of the game. Our team has members of different trade skills, who came together to make this virtual prototype. The initial stages set us up nicely for creating the digital version.

Our digital game captures the suspense and excitement that we were hoping for. When playing the game as a Survivor, there is a feeling of dread that the Monster is close by. The Survivors can hide in the cabinets or under the beds. However, being out of sight only provides momentary respite. If the Monster comes into the room, Survivors often dart out of hiding and try to run away to a safer location. From the Monster’s perspective, there is a feeling of power and a desire to hunt down the Survivors. This mindset is contagious, as a Survivor who is caught by the Monster and converted into another Monster adopts the same attitude and behaviors. At this point, teamwork arises as the Monster players work together to corner the remaining Survivors. As our game stands, we believe it captures the fun and engagement milestones we set for ourselves.

Three Aspects That Could Have Been Better

We faced networking issues. For this game to play as we hoped it would we needed multiplayer. Our first shot at multiplayer took us down the road of networking. We agreed that there was a large amount of risk in taking on the networking feature, but still thought it was worth giving it a chance. Not having anyone with an in-depth understanding of networking, we assigned this feature to one person who felt up to the task. It took a good amount of research and after building a few test projects with simple networking, we thought we were ready to integrate it into the project. This is when we realized the problem we made for ourselves. We originally had two different player controllers built by two different people. One controller was simple and easily integrated with the networking feature. The other controller was more complex and when integrated into networking began to crash the engine, due to lag. After giving some more time to the player controllers, it ultimately was decided to do away with networking for now. We ended up swapping over to a dual monitor split screen system. While this turned out to be a fun way to keep the multiplayer aspect of the game it was a challenge to design. We spent a lot time working in multiplayer. In hindsight, it would have been wiser to develop split-screen from the beginning. That would have freed up one of our stronger coders for more important gameplay features.

The Player controller had many issues. During the planning stage, the consensus was to have two different controllers because of the two different player modes (Monster and Survivor). Because of this, we decided to have two different controllers built by two different people. In retrospect, this was a bad decision. The two controllers that were made were very different. One was an extremely elaborate state machine controller driven by enums and built to cover every situation. The other controller was extremely basic and did only what was needed. Having two controllers was good in that we were able to try both out and see which one felt better. After testing, we found that the simple controller felt better. However, this controller was way more prone to bugs. Because of this, we decided to combine the two. The goal was to try and get the movement of the simple controller with the modularity of the complex one. This worked initially. However, as soon as more than one controller was running at a time, the messages would get crossed and players were influencing each other’s movements. The complex controller was breaking our networking processes as well. Ultimately, we reverted back to the simple controller. This controller adjusted variables based on if the player was playing a monster or a survivor. This worked and is now how we control the players.

Our team meetings tested our game to the limit. In week three our team started mandating once-a-week, in-person meetings. Although these meetings were short, they were focused and driven. A lot of work got done during these meetings. However, since this was the main time we implemented everyone's work it made it the number one time for everything to break. There were several times that we had to completely cut some work that people had been working on for several hours or even several days to revert to a simpler style of doing the same thing. Though this is part of the design process it is still a challenge that we, as a team, needed to overcome. Luckily, in this team we are very good at adapting and making sure everything is done right (and on time) so that's exactly what we did.

Three Actions for the Future

Implement networking. Moving forward we would like to be able to get full networking implemented for the game. Doing this will help in moving it away form a split-screen game that is on two monitors and help us achieve the immersion we wanted with sound and people playing on their own machine. The main issue with this right now dealing with latency that causes the game to lag. Networking will be a focus moving forward as we feel our game is meant to be played without the possibility of screen watching and really gives the feel of survivors being alone.

Multiple levels will give our game variety. Currently, we are working on the second level of the game that is designed around the original brainstormed level of a castle. It is much larger than our prototype level and it is designed to allow for the survivor to have more agency than before. The layout allows for multiple exits in some rooms, dead ends in others, and more hidden passageways. We are also anticipating that with the larger environment size, will be able to add more gameplay features to the level. This will allow us to expand the current gameplay experience beyond its original scope. We hope that the game will become more replayable and fun. Additionally, we would like to expand beyond the Castle level and into other settings.

Full functionality. Our team would like to finish the full game loop and all the intended features. One such feature would be that of the Character Creator. Players are to be able to choose from a variety of monster and survivor characters. They would also have the ability to make some customizations to their appearance. We would also like to add additional levels for players to choose from. After finishing the entire castle, there’s an opportunity for us to create an entirely new setting for the game. This would offer the players with more variety and gameplay options. This would also allow us to add more mechanics to make the game even more interesting. A feature we would like to bring back to the game is online and network play. With additional time we can create the experience of multiplayer that we intended for the players. This would also help with some of the immersion features designed to scare players. Currently, the environmental polish is lacking, but can be improved to meet our standards.
