and petty. whenever you mention you have a date, his response is always “is it with kacchan?” “huh? no, it’s—” “that’s too bad then.” he pretends not to remember any of your boyfriends’ names and somewhere along the way he just stops pretending and really doesn’t care to learn them. he’s sweet and all smiles with everyone else, but the second someone other than katsuki is interested in you, there’s a straight frown on his lips. he’s out for drinks with katsuki and he’s noticed some guys eyeing him from across the restaurant, so izuku goes to greet them while katsuki is in the bathroom, all bright smiles and hero facade beaming as he signs the shorter one’s baseball cap with a sigh, “kacchan is handsome, right? you should see his girl, she’s stunning too,” capping the sharpie and any potential plans for flirting for the evening. he’s spent many nights gossiping with mitsuki and inko about you two, crying about how seeing you two dating other people is harder than any other mission he’s ever been sent on.

sometimes izuku just wants to shove the two of you in a locker and keep you in there until you decide to be together. he spends so much time with his chin in his palm, sighing with such yearning for a relationship that isn’t even his own. his eyes are soft right now, watching you and katsuki in the communal kitchen of the agency. there’s a slight glare shining through the glass walls, but he can see your smiles bright as day. you lean with your back to the counter, stirring your tea mindlessly as katsuki faces you, arms crossed but posture relaxed, no doubt saying something to rile you up judging by the slick grin on his face. you’re much shorter than him, but izuku remembers the days when you were taller than both of them back in second grade; he thinks the height difference panned out nicely. kacchan could lean down and kiss you right now, izuku wishes he would. a soft smile paints izuku’s face—they only keep that tea in the cabinets for the days you decide to visit, and katsuki only teases to hear your sharp tongue counter him. he must be in a particularly good mood today—or maybe, he’s happy because you’ve visited—judging by the way he throws his head back with a hearty cackle after you’ve said something to him. that’s good, hopefully you’ll keep his spirits up when they leave for patrol later. izuku gets so caught up in his daydreaming that he’s startled when there’s a knocking on the glass, and now you’re next to it smiling at his startled face and waving to him. he looks at you, then back to katsuki, who’s shadowed you to the glass wall, hovering protectively like he always has. izuku shakes his head in disbelief, but waves back. he finds the glass fitting, a window he’s looking into. he just hopes the scene changes to something more romantic sooner rather than later.

Knight Bakugou who’s positioned to guard you. The King wants the best to protect his Princess, and Bakugou is the best. Besides, it’s not like the man had a choice, he doesn’t want to lose his job— or his life.

You hate to admit that Bakugou is good at his job, much better than the men that had tried to guard you before. Making it difficult for you to sneak out into the gardens in the evening to watch the stars, or to sneak into town for the weekend festivities.

You should hate him for ruining the routine you’d managed to work yourself into over the years, for stealing away the freedom that you’d rewarded yourself when no one else would offer you the same luxury. But somehow you can’t force yourself to dislike him, there’s something behind his cold and brash personality that has you inquisitive to find out more. Enjoying trying your best to rile him up or push his buttons— spilling your evening tea over his pristine boots, or dropping your towel in front of him when you prepare for your evening bath.

Knight Bakugou knows exactly what you’re trying to do, and he’s determined he won’t fall for your tricks— which is why he’s just as surprised as you are when he finds himself outside with you past curfew in the castle grounds watching the stars. But instead of staring up at the gorgeous night sky, he finds himself turning his head to the side to see how the moonlight glows against your skin. It’s just another thing that has now woven its way into your daily routine together, and as he walks you back to your quarters each night you like to fool yourself that it’s because he wants to, not because his life depends on it.

It isn’t long before the King begins to bring in suitors from neighbouring towns to vie for your hand in marriage. None of which are out of love, but a necessity to strengthen alliances between armies. Which is why it doesn’t matter if you even like any of them, because the choice won’t be yours. The men are scheduled to fight for your hand, and as you sit and wait for them to joust you notice Bakugou clad in full metal armour across the field.

The King positioned him as his strongest guard— because he is.

A man worthy enough to beat his strongest soldier is a man worthy enough to take his daughters hand in marriage. And yet as you watch every man come head to head with Bakugou he beats every single one.

And you think Bakugou has just beat these men because he wants to show how strong and powerful he is, but secretly it’s because he’s so in love with you.

You can’t tell whether your father is proud or annoyed at the fact, especially when Bakugou knocks the son, young Midoriya, off his horse. The man that you believed the King wanted to you marry, the most suitable alliance available.

It’s a few weeks later when Bakugou is sent away on a mission by the King. The head of an army sent out to pillage a neighbouring village who threaten to compromise the power of you’ve forged.

The morning he’s scheduled to leave is the first time he lets you kiss him, he lets you get that close. As though he’s wondering whether he’ll even return home himself. Standing in his quarters in the lower part of the castle, clad in your pyjamas and your feet freezing against the cold stone as he cradles you in his arms. Pouring every ounce of emotion into the kiss as he finally allows himself to have you, even if just for a few selfish moments. Bakugou reckons it’s worth the risk of dying, to feel your lips on his again. A fellow guard, Kirishima catches you both as he takes Bakugou away from you— watching them ride off on horseback as you still feel the warmth of him surrounding you.

You stay awake each night wondering whether he’s even still alive too— whether you’ll ever see him again. The new guards are just as useless as before and you find yourself longing for his safe return.

It’s two months before your father has another man lined up as a potential suitor. Wondering who might fight for your honour now that Bakugou is gone, but you’re shocked when the King says there’s no need for such friviolity. That the wedding is scheduled, and it’s the right reason to strengthen the Kingdom. It’s not for love, it could never be when your heart belongs to Bakugou.

And even if you told your father about your feelings for his guard, it would be issuing Bakugou his own death sentence if he even managed to make it home at all.

But fate really can be a cruel, fickle thing— and as fate would have it Bakugou returns home the day you’re standing at the altar wearing a pretty wedding dress like you’d dreamed about, while you’re waiting to be betrothed to another man.

There's a lot of validity in the idea that older Bakugo is a traumatized pro-hero with major PTSD... but you know what's kinda fucked up to think about? The fact that Bakugo is also a 22-year-old pro-hero with major PTSD even before that, too.

It's almost easy to imagine that things are actually better when he's older (the therapy finally a routine, the trauma long set and on the path to being healed)... and that it's his whole 20s that are spent as a pool of disaster trying to recover from the war(s).

He looks back and barely even remembers being twenty, much less twenty-five or twenty-seven. Barely remembers how little he slept, not at the hands of trying to balance hero work and getting a degree at the same time, but just out of the pure insomnia that came from trying to move on and every nightmare attached.

Hardly ever showering, never shaving (not that he ever grew much of a beard, but the facial hair was definitely there. There's pictures of him on the news with an awkward, grown out haircut and patches on facial hair that make him look positively... immature), barely even eating more than a few protein bars or an energy jelly drink-a day. It's a blur, and his friends are hardly there to pick him up out of it because they're all going through it, too. Somewhat.

It's definitely weird if you meet him during this period. He's not all there, at least, not all of the time. He doesn't really register your interactions, the friendship you extend to him (a younger, or ever older, version of him would've shown you that deep seeded ferocity in response, tried to bite the hand that fed him, even if it were love... but 20s Bakugo... doesn't seem to notice). Even though only one of his eyes is clouded over, the good one never seems to brighten up.

There's definitely moments when the old him shines through: when he's with Deku, when he's in the midst of battle, when he finds out that Todoroki still does a shitty job at chopping scallions. But it's a long time before he's even close to the same, able to step out from underneath the fog of simply surviving and into the sunshine of recovering.

But I think sticking through it with him is worth it.

(It's a weird moment, a happy moment, the first time you realize that Bakugo has changed. That the pouring rain outside hasn't bothered him since he showed up at your apartment. He forgot his umbrella, he's been quite careless ever since the war—wet and shaggy hair frizzed up, cheeks red from cold—but he doesn't seem to mind, with his bare feet up on your coffee table, his eyes gazing out the window. You hand his tea, and instead of gulping it down in one go, letting it burn in his throat, he winces at the heat.

"Tastes like shit," he says, and you laugh because it always does. Just this time, he noticed.)

BnHA Chapter 428: Night of the Kouhai

okay first things first, you all know how it is right. I’ve never made a secret of my Kacchan bias on this blog. I promise you I did actually write a recap to 426 and 427 as well, but both of those chapters went HEAVY on the themes and drama and philosophical shit, and my reactions were kind of all over the place, and the Todoroki one in particular was like a million words wrong and it needs a shit ton of editing which I don’t know when I’ll have the spoons for

on the other hand however, a chapter like this which features class 2A cuteness and an absolutely unreasonable amount of Kacchan character development fanservice to hyperfixate on, takes absolutely no spoons at all and in fact actively recharges some of my spoons, so yeah. here we are

anyway so when we last left off Kacchan and Shouto were in terrible danger from a threat more terrifying than any they’ve ever encountered before. so I already knew this chapter was going to be great

I’m so curious what’s going to happen next week. my money for the record is on them bonding in a STRICTLY PLATONIC WAY over their respective dead(!??!?!) villains rather than a Romance Thing happening. but I wouldn’t be bothered if they do go there though just so long as we don’t get any timeskip epilogues where they’ve all got fucking kids and such now. don’t you do that to me Horikoshi Kouhei. How was Hori trying to balance Bakugou’s ending when he got just as many bad moments in the war arc? And the bad moments outweigh the good ones. And then he gets dropped to 15 in the rankings. How is this balanced?

I'm just going to look at the main 4 - wishes / realities / pay-offs to show that not a single one of them got what they wanted / dreamed off:

Deku:

WISH: "OFA is not for killing, it's for saving. I want to save that little boy"

Reality: he ends up killing the crying boy, using OFA to destabilize his body. He loses the quirk he worked so hard to make his own in the process.

Pay-off: All Might calls him greatest hero together with Bakugou. Becomes a teacher, and realizes that his quirkless self could have become something other than professional hero, and still be heroic (probably, not shown). His friends give him a mecha suit. After 8 years, he (maybe) asks out a girl he likes.

Shoto:

WISH: Wants to save his brother, and share a meal with him.

Reality: Despite saving everyone, his brother is still dying, his family is alive but scarred and fractured, his family name is pulled through the mud and spends the first few years of his career overshadowed by a disgraced father and a criminal brother.

Pay-off: Gets no thanks or praise from anyone, but gets to ask his brother about his favorite food. Not that they'll ever eat it together. After 8 years of hard work people stop seeing him as Endeavor's son. He processes his grief over his brother into finding a new hobby.

Uraraka:

WISH: (This one is not so clear-cut), but she wants to see people smile and be able to be open about her feelings and wants to learn more about Toga and save her (maybe)

Reality: She gets wounded and Toga has to die to save her. Their battle is not even recorded and doesn't really influence or inspire anyone, other than Uraraka herself. She remains closed off about her feelings out of survivor's guilt.

Pay-Off: She gets a quirk upgrade. Toga thanks her. She gets comforted by Deku and Class A. She gets called Deku's hero and be thanked by him. She starts a successful quirk counselling program. Deku confesses to her instead.

So like nobody else gets their dream fully either.

Bakugou already got some amazing pay-off during the war:

He's the center of the effort to buy time for Deku and gets some amazing scenes of self-sacrifice

When he "dies", his team puts everything on the line to save his life

His resurrection is the biggest scene of the war, plus gets a quirk awakening

Gets to save All Might while the whole world watching

Gets the kill shot on AFO, and almost a solo credit for that kill despite everyone else's efforts

When he goes over to the final battlefield, he gets praised

Despite his injuries, he has a viable road to recovery, supported by his loving parents

All Might calls him the greatest hero and thanks him

His "death" and "resurrection" comes with only light costs - both Mirko's and Edgeshot sacrifices are turned into gags

He is admired by people and enters the chart at No 4.

Everyone helps him to organize the mech suit for Deku - and make his childhood dream an option.

I feel like Hori making him No 1 and making Deku his sidekick would have further increased the resentment of especially Deku-fans who felt like Bakugou got everything, while Deku lost everything.

So Hori gave him still some way to go to reach his dreams. He's only 25 - it's not like his life is over. Unlike the Savior Trio who all lost their villains and there is nothing they can do about it, Bakugou can still become No 1. He can even be partners or lovers with Deku at a later stage. Like none of those dreams are lost forever.

the mischaracterization of Monoma and Bakugo's relationship on tiktok is literally THE WORST.

"Monoma never hated Bakugo!!" he ABSOLUTELY did.

the entire reason why Monoma thought 1-A sucked in the beginning was because Bakugo is an ass.

He was pissed off when Bakugo actually WORKED WITH HIS TEAM because he's known him as some prick who doesn't know how to cooperate up until that point.

He was shocked an upset by Bakugo's "death" because he has seen him and class 1-A as this unstoppable force ever since he met them. seeing someone you thought was unkillable BE KILLED is a shock.

sure, he shits on 1-A but it's VERY OVIOUS he doesn't actually believe 1-A is less then him. he holds them on a very high pedestal and he's watching it crumble before his very own eyes. and it's obvious that he doesn't like seeing stuff that forcefully changes his views from the joint training battles.

even though Bakugo's personality is flaming garbage Monoma still KNEW him. not only that but he had to watch him get mauled and he physically couldn't look away. that's horrifying.

and even if I'm completely wrong and Horikoshi decides to suddenly make Monoma respect Bakugo JUST BECAUSE he died for five minutes would be a horrible choice for Monoma's character. everyone who didn't like Bakugo at first always ends up respecting him for some stupid reason, and that's not how the real world works. there NEEDS to be someone that balances that out, and that someone IS MONOMA. his background and previous interactions with Bakugo make him the perfect guy to hate his guts.

this arc for Monoma, in my opinion, should be the arc that lets him finally win SOMETHING. that lets him shine. because all throughout this entire story we have seen Monoma fail over and over again. what this arc shouldn't be is Monoma suddenly gaining some sort of "newfound respect" for the guy he's hated the entire story.
