Myth 1: Flushing Diapers is Safe and Convenient
A widespread misconception is that flushing diapers down the toilet is an acceptable disposal method. However, this practice can cause significant plumbing issues and is not safe for sewage systems. Diapers are designed to absorb moisture, making them prone to blockages. Instead of flushing, it is essential to use designated diaper disposal bins to prevent environmental damage and costly repairs.
Myth 2: Burning Diapers is a Viable Option
Some believe that burning diapers is an efficient way to dispose of them. This practice, however, releases harmful chemicals and pollutants into the air, posing health risks to humans and the environment. In Kerala, proper disposal involves using waste management services that handle non-biodegradable materials responsibly. This ensures that diapers are dealt with in a way that minimizes environmental impact.
Myth 3: Biodegradable Diapers Can Be Composted Easily
While biodegradable diapers are marketed as environmentally friendly, not all are suitable for home composting. These diapers require specific conditions to break down, which are not always present in regular compost heaps. In Kerala, it is important to separate biodegradable diapers from other waste and ensure they are processed correctly through specialized composting facilities or programs.
The Reality of Diaper Disposal in Kerala
The reality is that responsible diaper disposal in Kerala involves understanding and following the appropriate methods. This includes using proper waste disposal systems, avoiding environmentally harmful practices like burning, and supporting waste management solutions that accommodate the unique challenges of diaper waste.
