Although he's aware that some ways of calming oneself down can be considered unhealthy, Undertaker wouldn't be the first one to point them out. No matter what you do, living always results in dying and if smoking or drinking is making the difficult times more bearable then who's he to instruct you?

He knows that life can be overwhelming and the more empathetic you are, the harder it can be for you to maintain the relatively good humour, especially when experiencing some problems—he's the one who actually couldn't bear being alive anymore, after all. That's why he'd be pretty understanding when it comes to bad days or mood swings. And so, if you can find relaxation in unhealthy methods then so be it! As long as it's not directly exposing you to a danger of death or serious injury.

Besides, let's be honest, who is actually living a completely healthy life? Is there even a single person who has absolutely no bad habits? Undertaker is convinced that such a human doesn't exist, since they're way too prone to temptations of mind and body. It's only natural if you're one of them, too.

He might actually try to join you in smoking, drinking or whatever way you're coping—all out of sheer curiosity. He'd want to see what the whole fuss is about but also experience something like that with you, partly to keep you company and partly to see for himself if there'll be any positive results on him. He's very open-minded, sometimes too much.

Still, he'd keep an eye on you, just to make sure that you won't accidentally hurt yourself too much. The very last thing Undertaker wants is to lose you to some kind of addiction. But if you'd want him to act like your guardian or mentor who'll make sure that you won't go down the wrong path in life then he's definitely not this kind of person. He won't encourage nor discourage you but his eagerness and participation may actually result in you getting more into your bad habits.

Honestly, not the best person to be around if you're trying to quit anything. However, you should keep in mind that it's his way of showing his support and understanding for you, whatever it may be.

Affection: How do they show their love and affection? How intense would it get?

Affection doesn't come wasy to Trchno but once he's past seeing his darling as meat, he's extremely affectionate. He's very cuddly and loves physical intimacy- especially after he's taught what kissing is. He LOVES tasting every part of his darling.

Blood: How messy are they willing to get when it comes to their darling?

VERY messy- like EXTREMELY messy. Techno has absolutely no qualms in killing anyone that may try to get between him and his darling.

Cruelty: How would they treat their darling once abducted? Would they mock them?

He'll definitely make it apparent that now that he has them, Techno wasn't letting go of his prey. Would he mock them though...? Maybe if they're crying and pleading and trying to get away.

Darling: Aside from abduction, would they do anything against their darling’s will?

YES- a lot of things. I think I've talked about in an ask before so I won't elaborate.

Exposed: How much of their heart do they bare to their darling? How vulnerable are they when it comes to their darling?

The old beastly god doesn't really do "vunerable"- not unless you count him snoozing away and baring his underbelly for his darling.

Fight: How would they feel if their darling fought back?

Amused greatly- two can play at this game and his darling may not like it when he wins.

Game: Is this a game to them? How much would they enjoy watching their darling try to escape?

In the beginning before he got attached to his darling it was definitely a game and the escape attemptd wherea fun chase. After he had gotten more attached to his darling he didn't think lightly of it anymore.

Hell: What would be their darling’s worst experience with them?

God where would I even begin..... maybe catching Techno in an extra bloodlusty mood where he wanted to taste his darling’s blood AND he wanted to bone. It's not a fun experience- his bites are far from gentle and he's definitely not small down before. It's a miracle that he didn't kill his darling during this.... or the dozens of other times when he's done it.

Ideals: What kind of future do they have in mind for/with their darling?

At the beginning, darling was just a meal to savor until their eventual demise but now he wanted to keep them by his side forever. Just like other cryptids, he wants to make his darling immortal.

Jealousy: Do they get jealous? Do they lash out or find a way to cope?

Can't exactly get jealous if any rivals for his darling die- but he CAN get a little jealous if a fellow god/immortal creature has his darling’s attention or if they're trying to steal darling away.

Kisses: How do they act around or with their darling?

He's very adamant about darling staying by his side unless he needs to run off for something and is very domineering until they eventually learn to behave. As time goes on and darling goes from being seen as a meal to savor to a mate, Techno does get a bit kinder and more considerate of them.

Love letters: How would they go about courting or approaching their darling?

Techno has never been a romantic but based on what he's seen animals do and ancient human did, he'll certainly try his best to court them once he's dtarted falling for them. It's mostly tribute kills but he's also more attentive and somewhat gentle.

Mask: Are their true colors drastically different from the way they act around everyone else?

Nope not at all.

Naughty: How would they punish their darling?

Techno is all about physical punishments- breaking or even TAKING his darlings limbs are on the table.

Oppression: How many rights would they take away from their darling?

Not many? Other than keeping them close by, he won't take away electronics as long as they can't use them to escape somehow. Also not really a right to lose straight off the bat but darling can lose use of their legs or arms if push comes to shove.

Patience: How patient are they with their darling?

Not very patient- he's quick to get annoyed if his darling isn't listening

Quit: If their darling dies, leaves, or successfully escapes, would they ever be able to move on?

I've answered about what he'd do about darling dying before so in regards to if they leave? He'd definitely try to get them back.

Regret: Would they ever feel guilty about abducting their darling? Would they ever let their darling go?

If darling survived long enough that Techno changed the way he feels about them...... he kinda can feel guilt? But also like only in really special circumstances- like if the darling gets injuried or ill and he can't help them get better. He may be a god but he's not magically inclined and if getting another god involved like Phil doesn't help then he'll fight with himself about whether he should let his darling go back into society so they could be saved..... which then he will eventually concede and let them go.

Stigma: What brought about this side of them (childhood, curiosity, etc)?

Very simple answer- darling is tasty.

Tears: How do they feel about seeing their darling scream, cry, and/or isolate themselves?

Annoyed at the beginning but when his feelings for his darling change over time, Techno.... is still annoyed. But in a different kind of way that's really frustrating to him.

Unique: Would they do anything different from the classic yandere?

Honestly I don't really know how to answer this- maybe it's because he's not exactly a classic yandere? Techno's obsession isn't romantic in nature (at the beginning at least) so I guess that's a big difference- that and the fact that he's not a normal person that exists in normal people society.

Vice: What weakness can their darling exploit in order to escape?

His hibernation is a MASSIVE weakness and despite being aware of it, there's nothing Techno can really do as he can't resist his instincts. It's really lucky that he manages to wake up when his darling tries to escape.

Wit’s end: Would they ever hurt their darling?

Yeah a hundred percent and no need to elaborate.

Xoanon: How much would they revere or worship their darling? To what length would they go to win their darling over?

Techno definitely doesn't feel reverence towards his darling- while he does eventually grow to love them, he almost doesn't even see them close enough to being an equal. He doesn't really care to win his darling over in the begining of their relationship but later on, he definitely puts in SOME kind of effort.

Yearn: How long do they pine after their darling before they snap?

There's no real pining for him in the begining but if his darling escaped before he could nab them the first time they meet, he'll do the next best thing to pining which is trying to stalk them like prey.

Zenith: Would they ever break their darling?

Possibly? It's easier to develop stolkholm syndrome instead but if darling pushes all the wrong buttons, they can end up getting broken- well if Techno doesn't accidentally kill them first.

Rust Compiler Performance Triage

Overall a good week for performance with 77 real world crates benchmarks showing an average of nearly 1% performance improvement. Unfortunately, the largest regressions are not yet fully understood and require additional investigation. Of particular interest were some large improvements in doc builds due to storing additional metadata. However, this change might cause some crates to compile slightly slower in incremental check builds, but this is still being investigated.

The Help

            The Help, released in 2011, is placed in Jackson, Mississippi and focuses on the relationship between a young white women nicknamed “Skeeter” in the film, and the two African American maids she lives with. In hopes it will be her big break, Skeeter writes a book from the prospective of the maids to reveal the racism and discrimination they face daily. The story progresses revealing the societal upset the story caused, fights over money, heartbreak and much more. The primary story line of The Help focuses on the concept of whiteness. Skeeter uses her privilege to reveal the discrimination of those who do not have that same privilege. This story also shows the societal upset that can come from exposing the true discrimination of race.

            When relating this to course work, the first name that came to mind was Peggy McIntosh. I put myself in the shoes of our interview, but as if I was Skeeter interviewing, Minny, one of the maids. In her piece, White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack, she states one aspect of her privilege, “I can speak in public to a powerful male group without putting my race on trial” (McIntosh, 1989 p.2). During this time, if any African American person, especially a woman, talked in public to a white male they would be punished, in wasy so brutal we can only image. This entire movie contributes to the idea, “The privileges of whiteness are the not-so-secret dirty truth about race relations in America” (Jay p.102). This film defines identity, through its plain, straight forward explanation of racism. The identity was narrow, meaning many races at the time did not get to define or create their identity. Their identity was their race, and that’s where it remained.

            There is a cross sectionalism within this film regarding race identity, and socioeconomic status. Later in the film after Skeeter releases the book, she wrote, she splits the profit among herself and the maids which is equivalent to several weeks pay. The oppression within economic status shows throughout this film, and especially within this scene. Being a maid was a common job for African Americans during this time, as they were not allowed to have a higher held job within society, this then kept their pay low and kept them at a low socioeconomic status. They had no upward social mobility because they were not allowed to. The cross sectionalism of race and economic status is shown well throughout this film.

i was good friends with wasi early last year, until she started to get more suspicious each month that passed by. but it was never enough for a callout post, y’know? i wasn’t 100% sure she was lying, and i don’t want to accused for a...comment dit-on...liar.

after seeing @jakemckenzies essay, i’m confident enough to reveal things that i thought were extremely off-putting about her. sip sip!

the first sus tea is whether or not her boyfriend was real in the first place - and i’ll let you be the judge of that. (also, these screens are super old cause i’ve been suspicious since time. and since she deleted, i can no longer access our conversations)

i really tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, but the fact that she met someone who is studying to be a pilot, calls her princess, got cancer, had brain surgery, pretended to cheat on her, and then died? we know you playin’ wasi save this story for a nicholas sparks novel

X/1999 Ending Speculation : Part 2 : The Dragon on the Mantelpiece

Most of the time, the first Dragon to be discussed in an X/1999 ending speculation is Kamui or Fûma.  Occasionally it’s Subaru, Sorata or Hinoto.

However, the first Dragon to get a post dedicated to them in this speculation will be Shiyû Kusanagi.  You may be surprised by this.  After all, Kusanagi is the least significant Dragon to the plot so far, with his only important action being saving Kotori from Satsuki in Volume 5, and has the lowest profile in fanfiction.  

In fact, this is exactly why I am talking about him first.  Anton Pavlovich Chekhov famously wrote that an author should never mention a gun sitting on a mantelpiece if it is never going to be fired.  If we have seen all of Kusanagi’s role in the plot, there would be no reason to include him.  Some fans speculate that his role is to be the “token good guy” of the Dragons of Earth who joined by choice, but that role could have been given to Yûto quite easily (this would also have given Yûto an actually good explanation for why he joined the Dragons of Earth). I think that Kusanagi is a Chekhov’s Gun that would have been fired in the last three volumes of X/1999.  Completeoveranalysis speculates that Kusanagi and Yuzuriha will fight ;  I agree, but I do not agree with COA’s conclusion that one of them must die, as I do not think that either will be willing to kill each other, and I strongly suspect that COA failed to realise that the Dragons of Heaven cannot win fights by killing Dragons of Earth.  I think that the fight between Yuzuriha and Kusanagi will end with Kusanagi finding himself in a position where he could kill Yuzuriha but refusing to do so.

The Defeated Dragon

Last time, I mentioned that Kusanagi is the only Dragon of Earth who accepts their layer of reality instead of rejecting it, and that other Dragons of Earth probably lose if they accept their layer.  I think that Kusanagi is less of an exception than he seems to be, since he is, due to morality, unwilling to kill, and therefore cannot win contests for the Dragon of Heaven ;  in essence, he has already lost his contest. (as of the end of Volume 18, the tally is Earth 2 - Heaven 1)

The Peacemaker

I believe that, after Yuzuriha defeats him, the two of them will attempt to get the Dragons of Heaven and the Dragons of Earth to work together.  If their fight takes place after Sorata’s fight with Hinoto (which I think will be the main conflict of vol19), then, by this point, the truth about a potential Heaven victory would have been exposed.  I doubt that any Dragons of Heaven would not be willing to work towards a compromise to save the world, but which Dragons of Earth would be?  Yûto seems to be going in this direction.  Satsuki will probably keep fighting against humanity.  Kakyô won’t care so long as he gets to die.  Fûma will need to be convinced in order to save the Earth and humanity, but is that possible?  Probably. (I will explain this further in a later post)

I believe that Kusanagi’s role in the manga is to be the person who gets the Dragons of Earth to agree to work with the Dragons of Heaven.

A Power Among Powers

Kusanagi is, as of the end of Volume 18, probably the most powerful Dragon, stronger than even Fûma.  Why?  Because he is stronger than Yuzuriha, and Yuzuriha, during Volume 18, draws a fight against Fûma.  (Fûma has not achieved his full power yet, and will probably be the strongest Dragon afterwards). This actually makes a lot of sense, as Kusanagi is the Dragon of Earth who represents the Earth itself, and has powers in closest connection to it.

But what are Kusanagi’s powers?  Well, we know that he has the super-strength and jumping powers, like every other Dragon ;  although his degree of super-strength is greater than those of the other Dragons, this may be because super-strength acts as a multiplier on normal strength instead of an addition.  We also know that he has the ability to communicate with birds and has some sort of affinity for plants. This has led some people to believe that his powers are to control plants and animals.  This is a logical inference, and, in fact, I am almost certain of this.  

I believe he has this power, but I have started to suspect that he has another power as well :  the power to cause, prevent and modify earthquakes.  After all, his punches are supposed to have “the power of an earthquake”.

I have another piece of evidence to support the theory, too.  Perhaps Kusanagi has actually used this power before.

Tall Towers

In Volume 13, did all of Nishi-Shinjyuku get destroyed or only the tall towers?  According to Karen, it is completely devastated, but, according to Kusanagi, it was only partially destroyed.  I had initially planned to write a longer section on this, but I think that the exact parametres of the demolitions of kekkai warrant a post in and of themselves and I did not want to leave you waiting for too long on this post.  

Does the Earth want to kill you?

Actually, I don’t think that the Earth does want to cause the destruction of humanity.  If it did, why would it give its powers to the pacifist Kusanagi rather than, say, Fûma, the actual leader of the Dragons of Earth?  Also, humans used to be a major part of the ecosystem in some areas.

Here is another fan theory I have about X/1999 :  Kamui and Fûma are not the actual leaders of the Dragons of Heaven and the Dragons of Earth.

Wait, WHAT?

Think about it.  Humanity is what the Dragons of Heaven are purportedly fighting for.  Nature is what the Dragons of Earth are fighting for.  That’s Karen and Kusanagi, not Kamui and Fûma.  What are the roles of Kamui and Fûma, then?  They are the ones who fight.  Earth does not want to kill humanity, but it needs to start the apocalypse out of self-defence, because it does not know any other wasy to stop humanity from killing it.  It gives its powers to Kusanagi (and Kotori?) to try to find a peaceful solution, while Fûma does the dirty work of actually doing the apocalypse as a backup plan, because the Earth does not want a total victory.

Girl, Reinvented / Girl, Incorporated*

In this blog post, I will offer my take on two songs and tidbits on contemporary empowered pop music that, I think, exemplify the process through which girlhood as we know it came into existence as described by Angela McRobbie. Rebel Girl (first performed in 1991, released in ‘93) and #1 Must Have (2000), songs by bands Bikini Kill and Sleater-Kinney belong to riot grrrl movement, the 1990s phenomenon attempting to challenge misogyny and machismo in punk music. However, as Mary Celeste Kearney explains, it did much more than that: riot grrrl confronted the way in which images or (front)women are produced and circulated in the media and questioned commercial aspects of making music through the DIY approach. Similarly to McRobbie (albeit in different and explicitly feminist rather than post-feminist way), these songs engage with the beauty industry, female presence in public spaces, and queerness. Moreover, riot grrrl, as its name suggests and as previously shared pictures on my blog show, reembraced girly clothing while disrupting the seamless embodiment of femininity via sloppy make-up, writing paroles on the exposed skin, and screaming profanities in baby-doll dresses.  

Rebel Girl, the unofficial anthem of the movement, plays with suggestiveness of the singer’s (narrator’s) intent to, interestingly enough, try on rebel girl’s clothes, but this stylistic endeavor gains queer connotations in the singer’s wish to kiss “the queen of the neighborhood” which are confirmed in the final stanza that, unlike the previous ones, doesn’t profess a wish to befriend the rebel girl and opts for ellipsis. Rebel Girl is more than a love song as it also conveys willingness to embrace feminism: similarly to Joan Jett’s activity grrrl, rebel girl is cool because she is a feminist and not despite being one. #1 Must Have is a cynical take on entering the mainstream (“they took our ideas to their marketing stars”), “regime[s] of self-policing” (63) such as dieting and applying make-up, and selfhood split between self-fashioning (present in the motif of “beauty magazines” as well as in double meaning of must-have) and consumerism (“credit card bills”). The song is also an attempt to reclaim agency through “inventing” culture that is “what we make it”.

To quote McRobbie, riot grrrls refused to be “consummately and re-assuringly feminine” (60), but I think that their images (i.e. hot punk-rocker chicks) eventually got appropriated and reinterpreted by the mainstream that downplayed their political commitment and elided the same-sex eroticism present in numerous songs. While many activist musicians are still rocking on (Childbirth, Dyke Drama and WASI are my personal favorites), McRobbie was very right (and very early) to notice how some, previously charged, elements are easily incorporated and pacified: for example, performative same-sex eroticism occasionally practiced by phallic girls (but never in a way that would suggest lesbianism/excluding men) is very much played with in songs such as Girls whose creators went on to reassure the audience that they were “just playing”. Also, “having it all” liberal feminism is (unironically) celebrated in Ariana Grande’s Positions: new sexual contract with its promises of “the opportunity to work, to gain qualifications, to control fertility and to earn enough money to participate in the consumer culture” (54) is easily noticed in Grande’s willingness to accommodate her “too good to be true” partner by

The video might be a clever jab at Trump’s presidency, and a successful play on gender roles/president-the first lady dynamic (as Grande is portraying POTUS while dressed like Jackie Kennedy), but I think that contemporary empowered girlhood fails to deliver on its transformative promises. As  Sleater-Kinney sang in 2000, it might be time to (re)invent it.

World-building: Fantastical Racism! Because why TF not?!

I’ve been on a world-building binge lately, in preparation for my Storm King’s Thunder and general D&D 5th Edition stream that begins in October, so this is apparently where the crazy train is gonna make a stop.

Faerun (and the entirety of Forgotten Realms in general) is a delightfully detailed and elaborate fantasy world, filled with immaculate histories and rife with opportunity for role-play and adventure. But to make the setting feel more alive, one must express the finer details. As flavor text, a DM can highlight things such as languages, accepts, slang, and of course, the relationships between fantastical races.

When you put several billion sentient beings on the same massive rock, even if they are the same freaking species, they can’t seem to get along, so can you imagine what it’d be like if substantial portions of the population had wings, were from another dimension, or were literally chosen by an evil god, to name a few? There’s bound to be significant and to some extent, understandable racial tension in such a diverse magical world. So I took it upon myself to come up with a few random fantastical racial slurs, because I’m kind of sick that way. Please join me on this poorly-advised odyssey.

“Peck”

Insult regarding to bird people (e.g. aarakocra and kenku). Obviously, a reference to their beaks and primary method of ingesting food.

I wanted a sharp word (K-sounds) that carried some bird-like quality to it, and “cluck” sounded too silly and similar to the annoyingly overused “cuck.” Interesting bit of trivia: this term has been used before in a different fantasy setting, as a slur against the vertically-challenged races present in the 1988 cult-classic “Willow.” STEALING LIKE AN ARTIST FTW!

“Snick”

This one’s a derogatory slur regarding people with scales (e.g. dragonborn, lizardfolk, and kobolds) This one was derived from the work “snake” and invokes the lowborn nature of common serpents.

This one feels like the weakest, mostly because it sounds kinda silly, and I didn’t really put much thought into it. I might rework it later.

“Pinks”

I wanted a term for the general human race with negative connotations and expressed how the other races would perceive them. In the lore, humans tend to be the most versatile species, which is what makes them so capable, despite being usually slower, weaker, less beautiful, and less intelligent. Keeping with the above trend, I aimed to use another monosyllabic sharp-sounding word. This time, I turned to television for inspiration. Oberyn Martell’s words from GoT S4E1 gave me an idea...

Obviously, he’s referring to man’s skin color, but I decided to take it a step deeper, and remove it from the realistic context. Instead of drawing attention to melanin (which we get enough of IRL, goddammit), the slur “pink”, in our campaign, would instead be an allusion to the color of human meat and how relatively easy it is to expose (and by extension, how wasy humans are to injure/defeat/kill). Yes, technically meat is red, but red’s too dignified and fierce a color, and a slur is meant to demean, not empower. The soft color is meant to highlight humanity’s fragility in the eyes of much stronger and agile species.

That’s as far as I got before I ran out of steam. Maybe next time I’ll see what I can come up with for the remaining core races, such as dwarves, halflings, gnomes, elves (including drow) and orcs. The first three could have words relating to their smaller size, but that feels like reaching for the...ahem, low-hanging fruit. I’ll see if I can come up with something more creative moving forward, but that’s for another day.

It is a lot more important than just discourse (it’s pretty terrible cyberbullying and way beyond normal pettiness), but as the situation began it looked a lot like discourse. Of course, now that the full extent of Wasi’s behaviour has been exposed, the tag “#wasi discourse” feels a bit insensitive, especially given that she’s made no attempt to apologise or explain and people have been really hurt by her actions. You’ve made an excellent point, and from this point on I’ll tag the posts in this as “#wasi”. 

Bullying? Definitely way more than discourse. If you’re being bullied online, don’t be afraid to block the person/people involved, turn off your anon asks (or even just asks in general if you’re nervous), and do what you need to. You can even take a break if you want to, and nobody on here will judge if you want to switch off for a few days to remember that there’s a real world out there and online bullies can be easily blocked/ignored/exposed. There’s also lots of blogs in the fandom that are lovely people to talk to, and they can give you good advice!

KubeVirt Status 0x7E1 (2017)

Where do we stand with KubeVirt at the end of the year? (This virtual machine management add-on for Kubernetes)

We gained some speed again, but before going into what we are doing right now; let's take a look at the past year.

Retro

The year started with publishing KubeVirt. The first few months flew by, and we were mainly driven by demoing and PoCing parts of KubeVirt. Quickly we were able to launch machines, and to even live migrate them.

We had the chance to speak about KubeVirt at a couple of conferences: FOSDEM 2017, devconf.cz 2017, KubeCon EU 2017, FrOSCon 2017. And our work was mainly around sorting out technical details, and understanding how things could work - in many areas. with many open ends.

At that time we had settled with CRD based solution, but aiming at a User API Server (to be used with API server aggregation), a single libvirt in a pod nicluding extensions to move the qemu processes into VM pods, and storage based on PVCs and iSSCI leveraging qemu's built-in drivers. And we were also struggling with a nice deployment. To name just a few of the big items we were looking at.

Low-level changes and storage

Around the middle of the year we were seeing all the features which we would like to consume - RAW block storage for volumes, device manager, resource classes (now delayed) - to go into Kubernetes 1.9. But at the same time we started to notice, that our current implementation was not suited to consume those features. The problem we were facing was that the VM processes lived in a single libvirtd pod, and were only living in te cgroups of the VM pods in order to allow Kubernets to see the VM resource consumption. But because the VMs were in a singlel ibvirt pod from a namespace perspective, we weren't bale to use any feature which was namespace related. I.e. raw block storage for volumes is a pretty big thing for us, as it will allow us to directly attach a raw block device to a VM. However, the block devices are exposed to pods, to the VM pods (the pods we spawn for every VM) - and up to now our VMs did not see the mount namespace of a pod, thus it's not possible to consume raw block devices. It's similar for the device manager work. It will allow us to bring devices to pods, but we are not able to consume them, because our VM proccesses live in the libvirt pod.

And it was even worse, we spent a significant amount of time on finding workarounds in order to allow VM processes to see the pods' namespaces in order to consume the features.

All of this due to the fact that we wanted to use libvirtd as intended: A single instance per host with a host wide view.

Why we do this initially - using libvirtd? Well, there were different opinions about this within the team. In the end we stuck to it, because there are some benefits over direct qemu, mainly API stability and support when it comes to things like live migrations. Further more - if we did use qemu directly, we would probably come up with something similar to libvirt - and that is not where we want to focus on (the node level virtualization).

We engaged internally and publicly with the libvirtd team and tried to understand how a future could look. The bottom line is that the libvirtd team - or parts of it - acknowledged the fact that the landscape if evolving, and that libvirtd want's to be part of this change - also in it's own interest to stay relevant. And this happened pretty recently, but it's an improtant change which will allow us to consume Kubernetes features much better. And should free time because we will spend much less time on finding workarounds.

API layer

The API layer was also exciting.

We spend a vast amount of time writing our own user API server to be used with API server aggregation. We went with this because it would have provided us with the full controll over our entity types and http endpoints, which was relevant in order to provide access to serial and graphical consoles of a VM.

We worked this based on the assumption that Kubernetes will provide anything to make it easy to integrate and run those custom API servers.

But in the end these assumptions were not met. The biggest blocker was that Kubernetes does not provide a convenient way to store an custom APIs data. Instead it is left to the API server to provide it's own mechanism to store it's data (state). This sounds small, but is annoying. This gap increases the burden on the operator to decide where to store data, it could eventually add dependencies for a custom etcd instance, or adds a dependency for PV in the cluster. In the end all of this might be there, but it wasis a goal of KubeVirt to be an easy to deploy add-on to Kubernetes. Taking care of these pretty cluster specific data storage problems took us to much off track.

Rigth now we are re-focusing on CRDs. We are looking at using jsonscheme for validation which landed pretty recently. And we try to get rid of our subresources to remove the need of a custom API server.

Network

Networking was also an issue where we spend a lot of time on. It still is a difficult topic.

Traditionally (this word is used intentionally) VMs are connected in a layer 2 or layer 3 fashion. However, as we (will really) run VMs in a pod, there are several ways of how we can connect a VM to a Kubernetes network

Layer 2 - Is not in Kubernetes

Layer 3 - We'd hijack the pod's IP and leave it to the VM

Layer 4 - This is how applications behave within a pod - If we make VMs work this way, then we are most compatible, but restrict the functionality of a VM

Besides of this - VMs often have multiple interfaces - and Kubernetes does not have a concept for this.

Thus it's a mix of technical and conceptual problems by itself. It becomes even more complex if you consider that the traditional layer 2 and 3 connectivity helped to solve problems, but in the cloud native worlds the same problems might be solved in a different way and in a different place. Thus here it is a challenge to understand what problems were solved, and how could they be solved today, in order to understand if feature slike layer 2 connectivity are really needed.

Forward

As you see, or read, we've spent a lot of time on reseraching, PoCing, and failing. Today it looks different, and I'm positive for the future.

libvirt changes, this will allow us to consume Kubernetes features much more easily

Our deployment is much better today - this shall allow us to move to other clusters (Tectonic, OpenShift, …)

We are not at an end with how networking will look, but we are implemeting something which is pretty compatible (missing link)

We care about storage and see that we tie much better into the Kubernetes storage world

The API is getting refactored and is looking much more Kube-ish now

We focus on CRDs and can simplify other things

Extract from the sermon of Messenger of Allah(peace be upon him and his purified progeny) at #Ghadeer khum "...I testify for Him from my self because I am His Abd, and testify His Lordship, and I convey whatever He reveals to me, with the realization that if I do not do it such a hardship would come down on me which no one could repel from me even if he is bestower of big favour and friendly character, because there is no God except Him. Certainly He has informed me that which commandment is revealed to me, if I do not convey it then it is as I did not convey His Risalat, and Allah has given me surety that He will protect me from the evil of people, and Allah Himself is Sufficient and Generous, and He has revealed to me, “With the Ism of Allah the Gracious the Merciful, Ya Rasool, what has been sent down upon you from your Rabb convey it, and if you do not do it, then it is as you never conveyed Risalat, and Allah will protect you from the evil of the people” (al-Ma’ida, v67) ...And I expressed to Jibraeel (a.s.) that Allah Ta’ala should excuse me from conveying this message to you people. Because, O people, I certainly know that there is lack of Muttaqeen (pious ones) and hypocrites are in majority, and there is deceits & deception of sinners, and there are plots of mockers of Islam, whom Allah mentioned in His Book, “Whatever they say from their tongues, it is not in their hearts” and they consider it trivial, whereas it is very hard thing near Allah. And these people have tortured me again and again, so much so that they called me “Ear” and thought that I am like that, only due to this reason that I mostly keep Ali (asws) with me, and keep attention to him. So Allah Ta’ala revealed about it, “Those people who torture Nabi (sawaw) and say that he is only Ear, you say in reply to those people who consider you such that him being Ear is better for you people”, and if I wish to tell the names of those who say so, I can tell, and if I want to point towards them, I can do, and if I want to introduce (expose) them, I can do, but I am dealing these matters in honourable behaviour. And concerning this matter Allah is not pleased with me at all except that what order He has sent down to me, I should convey it, so Allah says, “Ya Rasool, what has been sent down upon you from your Rabb convey it, and if you do not do it, then it is as you never conveyed Risalat, and Allah will protect you from the evil of the people.” O people, know and understand that certainly Allah has appointed Ali (asws) as Wali and Imam for you, his obedience is made obligatory on Muhajireen & Ansaar, and on those who follow him in virtue, and on inhabitants of villages and cities, and on non-Arabians & Arabians, and on free and slave, and on every small & big, and on every white and black, and this order is applicable to all monotheists, and to accept his words is obligatory, his command will be executed. Whoever will oppose him, he is accursed(Mal’oon). Whoever will obey him, he is blessed, whoever will testify him, he is Momin, surely Allah forgave him (his sins) who listened and obeyed him. O people, this is the last occasion & place that I am appointing Ali (asws). So listen and obey, and accept the order of your Rabb, because Allah Azza wa Jalla is your God and your Wali (Guardian), after Him His Rasool Mohammad (sawaw) is your Wali who is addressing to you while standing, then after me with the order of Allah Who is your Rabb, Ali (asws) is your Wali and your Imam. Then Imamat is in those who are from his progeny until the day of Meeting with Allah(azwj) and His Rasool (sawaw). Nothing is Halaal except which Allah has declared Halaal, and nothing is Haraam except which Allah has declared Haraam. Allah has given me the knowledge of Halaal & Haraam, and I have given it to Ali (asws) the knowledge of the Book which my Rabb has bestowed me and the knowledge of Halaal and Haraam. O people, there is no such knowledge which Allah(swt) has not enclosed in my soul, and I have not given that to Imam-ul-Muttaqeen Ali (asws), there is no such knowledge which I have not taught Ali (asws), and he is the Imam-e-Mubeen (asws). O people, accept his superiority because Allah(swt) has bestowed him superiority, and accept his Walayat because Allah has appointed him. O people, he is Imam from Allah, and Allah does not accept anyone’s repentance who denies his Walayat, and will never forgive him. And this is the right of Allah that who opposes His order should deal with him in such way that to give him severe of severest punishment forever and for all the times. So avoid His opposition lest you go in Fire whose fuel is the people and stones which is prepared for the deniers. O people, by Allah, previous Prophets (as) and Messengers (as) were given good news about me, and I am the Last of the Prophets (as) & Messengers (as), and I am the Hujjat upon all the creations in the heavens and the earths, thus whoever doubts about it is Kafir, Kafir of previous ignorance. And whoever doubted about my this saying (Walayat-e-Ali (asws)) he doubted in my Risalat, and doubtful about it will go to Fire. O people, believe Ali (asws) superior because after me he is superior to all whether they are men or women. For our sake Allah sends down provisions (Rizq) and creations perpetuate for our sake as well. He is accursed, accursed, wrathed one, wrathed one who rejects my this saying and does not agree with it. Beware, Jibraeel (as) has conveyed this news from Allah(swt) that who keeps animosity with Ali (asws) and does not keep friendship with him, My Curse and My Wrath is on him. So every soul should ponder what he sends forward for tomorrow. Fear Allah and do not oppose Him, lest your feet slip after being steadfast. No doubt whatever you are doing Allah is Knowing. O people, he (Ali asws) is Janbullah, whom Allah has mentioned in His Book, “Alas, why I did shortfall concerning Janbullah” By Allah, no one will explain to you correctly the warnings in Quran and will not make clear its Tafseer for you except this personality whose hand I am holding and whom I am lifting and whose arm I am holding and am teaching you that for whomever I am Maola, for him is this Ali(asws) Maola, and he is Ali ibne Abi Talib (asws), my brother and my Wasi, and his being Wali is from Allah Azza wa Jalla, and He has sent down this commandment upon me. Then Rasool Allah (sawaw) raised Ali (asws) more high by holding his arm, so much that his feet came at the level of his knees. Although he was holding the hand of Amirul Momineen (asws) since that time when he mounted the pulpit. O Allah, You keep friendship with him who keeps friendship with him, and keep animosity to him who keeps animosity to him, and curse on him who denies him and opposes his right, and be wrathful to him who fights with him. O Allah, You have revealed it to me that Imamat is for Your Wali Ali (asws), and when I announced his superiority openly with which You perfected the Deen of Your servants and completed Your Favour upon them and chose Islam as Deen for them, then You said, “And who will adopt instead of Islam any Deen then nothing will be accepted from him and he will be among the losers in the Hereafter” (Aale Imran, verses 85), Ya Allah, I make You Witness that I have conveyed Your message. O people, this Ali (asws) helps me more than you all together, and is more rightful than you all near me, and is more near & beloved to me than you all, and Allah Azza wa Jalla and I both are pleased with him, and there is no verse related to Pleasure of Allah revealed which is not about him, and Allah did not address Momineen in any place but its real addressee is him, and there is no praising verse in Quran revealed which is not in his favour, and in Sura Hal Ata Allah has confirmed Jannah specifically for him, and did not reveal that Sura in any other’s favour except him, nor praised any one else in it except him. O people, every Nabi’s progeny is from himself, but my progeny (asws) is from Ali asws. O people, Iblees caused Adam (a.s.) to exit from Paradise due to enviousness. Thus you must not be jealous to Ali asws, otherwise your all deeds will be nullified, and your feet will stagger. Adam (as) was sent down on the earth due to one mistake, though he was chosen of Allah, then what will be your condition if you slip while you are only servant of Allah? No one keeps grudge with Ali (asws) except evil hearted, and no one loves Ali (asws) except pious one, and no one believes in him except pure Momin, and by Allah, He revealed Sura al-Asr only in favour of Ali (asws). O people, believe in Allah and His Rasool (sawaw) and that Noor which came down with him, before that We disfigure your faces then turn them toward back. O people, Noor from Allah Azza wa Jalla is in my self, then it is transferred to Ali (asws), then in his progeny until al-Qaim al-Mahdi (asws) who will take revenge for the right of Allah and for the right of all Momineen, because Allah has made us Hujjat on Muqassireen, enemies, opponents, usurpers, sinfuls, and unjust ones of all the worlds. O people, you do not show favour to us by accepting Islam otherwise Allah will be Wrathful upon you, and then punishment will strike you from Him, and He is looking for such people. O people, just after me there will be such Imams who will invite toward Fire, and they will not be helped on the day of Qiyamah. O people, no doubt, Allah and I both are immune to them. O people, certainly those Imams and their supporters and their Shias and their Muqallideen (followers) will be in the lowest level of the Hell, such is the evil residence of the arrogant ones. O people, I leave Imamat & Warasat (inheritor & owner of Deen) in my progeny (asws) until Qiyamah, and which thing I was commanded to convey that I have conveyed which is Hujjat (proof, authority) on every present and absent, and on everyone who is present here or is not present, and on everyone who has been born or who is not yet born. Thus who is present should convey it to the absent, and every father should preach (convey, Tableegh) Walayat to his son, this chain should continue until Qiyamah. And soon people will make a state by usurping. Beware, Curse of Allah is on usurpers and their companions. And O both parties, We will be free quickly to take your account (Hisaab) that time, then on both engulfing Fire and molten copper will be sent, so you both will not be able to stop it. O people, there is no such habitat (dwelling) which is not destroyed due to belying him (Ali asws), and similarly every habitat will be destroyed which does injustice, as Allah Azza wa Jalla has mentioned. And this Ali (asws) is your Imam and your Wali, and those are promises (covenants) of Allah and Allah fulfils His promise. O people, offer prayer and give Zakat as Allah Azza wa Jalla has commanded. If your time is extended and you do a mistake then this Ali (asws) is your Wali (Guardian), he will make (truth) clear for you, whom Allah Azza wa Jalla has appointed. O people, every Halaal which I have told you, and every Haraam from which I have forbidden you, certainly I will not step back from it nor will change it, so you remember it, guard it, and advise each other about it, and never change it nor alter it. Beware, I again repeat this thing. Beware, establish prayer and give Zakat, and command good and forbid evil. Beware, important thing about Amr-bil-Maroof and Nahi-anil-Munkir is that it should be done according to my words (saying, order), and convey this message to him who is not present here, and command him to accept my order, and forbid him to oppose my words, because this is command of Allah Azza wa Jalla and mine, and without Imam (asws) neither is Amr-bil-Maroof nor Nahi-anil-Munkir. O people, your number is more than that you pay allegiance to me one by one at this moment, but Allah has commanded me take testimony from your tongues for this matter that I have taken firm covenant of Ali (asws) being Amirul Momineen, and after him for those Imams (asws) who are from mine & his progeny, I have told you already that my progeny is from him (Ali asws). So you testify all together, “Whatever You (sawaw) have conveyed to us from our Rabb & your Rabb concerning Ali (asws) and concerning those Imams (asws) who are from his family and from his progeny, we have listened and we are happy with it, ready to obey. We pay allegiance to it with our heart, with soul, with tongue and with hand, we will live with it and die on it as well, and will be raised on it as well, and we will not make any change & alteration in it, nor will we doubt & suspect about it, and we will never turn away from this covenant, nor will break this undertaking (Pact), and we will obey Allah and you (sawaw) and obey Amirul Momineen Ali (asws) and Imams (asws) who are from his progeny, and whom you (sawaw) have mentioned that they are from your progeny and from him (Ali asws) after Hassan (asws) and Hussain (asws). O people, say that what I am telling you, and say Salam to Ali (asws) while addressing him Amirul Momineen, and say that as well, “We listen and obey, O our Rabb forgive us, and we will return only to You” and say this as well, “Every Praise is only for Allah Who guided us to this matter, and if Allah would not have guided us then we would not have been guided. O people, there are abundant merits of Ali ibne Abi Talib (asws) near Allah, and what He has revealed in Quran it is much more than that I could narrate in my one sermon at one place. Thus anyone who tells you those merits and make you understand then you should confirm it. O people, say only that thing, by saying which Allah is pleased with you. Then if you and all the inhabitants of earth become Kafir (denier of Walayat-e-Ali asws), you will not be able to cause any loss to Allah.
