Hiya Jo, sorry to come to you for this, but your post on Maya Knuckles was so cool I had to ask. You seem good at researching stuff, do you have any tips on looking for sources on specific groups of people? I've been struggling on finding good resources on indigenous groups from brasil... (I'm brazilian myself but i dont know where to start)

I wouldn't say I'm good at research, as I think I'm more insanely curious and just lucky LOL. A lot of times when I try to search for specific things I try absolutely everything until I stumble on whatever I was looking for!

But usually I start with a quick basic skim-read on whatever google gives you when you look up whatever your looking for. Most often then not it'll probably give a wikipedia page, some related news articles and some unsourced pages. A lot of times I won't use any of these, but it's a good way to get a feel for what you'll need to keep an eye for.

What I mean is that sometimes just looking for the main subject of the research wont actually give you what you're looking for. For example, when I was looking for Mayan stuff, it kept giving me Inca and Aztec info, which is cool, but wasn't what i was looking for. But since these 3 were usually grouped together, looking for Inca and Aztec books/resources actually helped me a bunch into finding what I was looking for, and more! So keep an eye out on how the subject you're looking for is COMMONLY described, what's usually associated to it, what people talk about the subject etc.

Then you can go actually searching for thing now, I recommend using DuckDuckGo! And always check if they got a source. Plenty of articles will say things that they've seen on other articles, which maybe are true! but then you always run the risk of getting incorrect facts. So always check, if it's not sourced, run another search with the info and see if another article has a source.

When you do find an article/book with a source THEN you can fall down the rabbit hole! No joke one sourced article can lead you to 5 sources, which most probably also have sources. So from there it's pretty easy to search up on references.

If you run into a dead end and still hasn't found what you're looking for I recommend checking what the wikipedia page is citing as sources. You might not be able to access everything there, but some links should be able to redirect you to somethings.

In terms of paywalled scientific articles, disabling javascript usually works (right click on the page -> inspect element -> find the gear on the top right of the window it just showed up -> scroll down until you see a checkbox saying "disable Javascript" -> and refresh page). But if that doesn't work, Sci-Hub is fucking amazing. Just put down your ref or DOI and voilá!

For books I recommend checking the Internet Archive! They usually have what you're looking for, but also half of the time you can just type "Book name PFD" and it'll usually come up after a few search pages. Just make sure you know how to download stuff without getting a virus in you PC.

Reverse image search can also be pretty useful if you find an image related to the subject, since you can link up to other articles/blogs.

If you're STILL running in dead ends, switching up languages can help (probably not your case since your brazilian and most likely already searching in portuguese but yknow). Google translate extensions can really help looking into pages with languages you don't know! It's not perfect but it might help you get a gist of it.

And lastly if you want to know more about Indigenous people from Brazil, I got a couple of reccomendations (most in portuguese btw)!

I don't know how much stitching you've done before now, but the very basics of cross stitch and blackwork are here and here. If you already know the basics,

For the kind of blackwork I do most, using repeating motifs to fill in sections of a larger image, I find that the biggest problem is getting lost in the chart and forgetting which repetition of the fill motif I'm on. This is especially tricky when there are slight variations in the motif, as happens when I'm shading or making a colour gradient. Have some way to mark off each repetition of the motif as you complete it. I do this by annotating in my laptop's .pdf reader; some people print out the pattern and just use a highlighter. There is some software like Pattern Keeper or Cross Stitch Saga that some stitchers like, but the file formats they use aren't always available (I've also been told that Pattern Keeper isn't great with backstitch, which would make it kind of useless for blackwork, but I've never used either program, so someone else can weigh in there).

I work on black Aida a lot - some people hate working on black because it's harder to see the holes in the cloth, but I love the way it makes coloured blackwork pop. Your best friend here is lighting - good light on your work, and also a bit of backlighting. You don't want the backlight to be so strong that the holes turn into blinding little pinpricks, but you want to be able to see the light through them. Some people will put a phone or tablet behind their work with the screen on low; I find that having something white behind it is enough - a white pillow on my lap, or the white walls of my apartment.

My backs are a mess, yeah. For most of my patterns, it's geometrically impossible to do the reversible blackwork thing, and most of the time I'm making something whose back won't be visible, so it's a place to hide my stitchy sins. Gradients in particular have areas where stitches of one colour are relatively far apart, so there are big jumps on the back.

Samplers made up of small motifs in separate squares are a good way to get used to following blackwork charts without getting tangled up in repeating fill patterns.

If you're looking for a small project to give blackwork a try, I've got a couple of little free patterns here and here that are on the simpler side, and one here that's a good way to try a gradient.

hi omg sorry for getting to this late but uh i alwaysss recommend my mutual @/gringolet's post on an intro to arthuriana which covers most of it but hmmm if you're asking me how i went about it i started semi chronologically with uh some early arthurian adjacent docs irt to subroman britain (i dont recommend this. dont do this have fun) and made my way up to historia regum britanniae (i do recommend this one but you can just read the arthurian parts if you dont want to read anything else lol..) also i recommend reading other pseudohistories! layamon's brut and historia gentis scotorum are my favs but wace's roman de brut is good as well..then when you get to romances most famously there are the romances of chretien de troyes. my favorite is lancelot, knight of the cart but it is...a lot. yvain, knight of the lion is also very good i recommend that as well. perceval, or the story of the grail is unfinished so fair warning but there are lots of other grail narratives if thats your thing (my personal favorites are parzival, peredur fab effrawg, and the didot perceval. i really like perceval stories lol) also theres the epigonal romances and like thats an entire thing in itself but my favorite of all of them has to be meraugis de portlesguez it is so entertaining it is more entertaining than a lot of modern stuff ive read honestly.

if you're looking for prose romances, there is...the lancelot grail cycle, or the vulgate, which is really long and has a lot of content it is where most of the most popular arthurian traditions originate. then there's the post vulgate which is a sort of a condensed version of it? ive not read either i dont know how much they differ lol. i know that it features more tristan and iseult stuff which is like, if you like or want to read tristan and iseult stuff this post is really good also by my mutual @/tillman i personally am not really invested in the tristan and iseult stuff but like. that is a personal thing lol. also irt to prose stuff the three romances of the mabinogi + culhwch ac olwen + breuddwyd rhonabwy are the arthurian stories in the book but i just recommend it in general it is so good. it is so good please god read the mabinogion im a big fan of welsh arthuriana in general so if you want to have more recs for that specifically lol...

also yes i will talk about the english stuff now cause thats what people like well layamons brut is in like..extremely archaic english but there's also the prose merlin (highly recommend but it is hard to find a translation online that's in like. contemporary english), there's also lancelot of the laik which is great, the alliterative morte arthure which is probably one of my favs it is excellent but then again i like the iliad so maybe i'm a biased slut for war epics (also yeah its a war epic lol). um also theres sir gawain and the green knight which i know is like the most famous of all of them and theres a movie coming out and whatnot and like its fine. its a good starter because it tells a very contained story on its own it doesnt expect you to understand everything ab arthurs court its very entertaining but imo i would read other romances featuring gawaine before this one (which is basically like. all the verse romances lol hes a popular character. my little meow meow). speaking of gawaine the dutch romances (which feature him. heavily) are good. theyre very good and i recommend them highly they also tell contained, highly entertaining stories um id start with moriaen (which is what i started with) and then skip around from there they're all great tho.

um now everyone's wanting me to say it which is uh. lets talk about le morte darthur! i dont recommend it as a starter text even tho i read it like really early on myself so do what you want however id say get one of those like, condensed versions like howard pyles king arthur, andrew langs book of romance, beatrice clay rodger lancelyn green and henry firth bc they all tell condensions of it and id keep it on you while youre reading the original thing just in case like things dont make sense or whatever lol plotwise. le morte is a very late text, and it is very strange for an arthurian text so like idk why people say to read it first because. if i had to say read any arthurian medieval text last. it would honestly be this one because there is such a beautiful finality to it.

i do recommend it though but fair warning that things presented in le morte are like. not the same across all texts? thats something you should keep in mind in general like a lot of these texts are from diff cultures diff languages with their own shifted traditions of arthurian stuff so just in case theres contradictions or whatever between them even in the texts itself (i am looking at you geoffrey of monmouth and anna's family tree) like, dont sweat it or whatever theyre just weird like that. its like comics or whatnot.

anyways this is all to say you have a lot of places to start and pick around from id recommend shorter stuff first and stuff whose translations are usually pretty accessible and contemporary (this is why i highly recommend de troyes' romances in the beginning) just to get used to it cause the 'plot' structure of these things esp in the verse romances is like a bit different than modern lit so i know that can be offputting for some people. like i said like modern condensions of arthurian stuff are invaluable, so are um indexes? there's a couple i don't know if there are any pdfs floating online but i know they usually carry them at libraries and whatnot...

there's a lot of modern modern stuff i dont know about any of it. i couldnt even tell you about bbc merlin i am quite stupid in regard to it. i do know a fair bit about victorian stuff which is modern tho! i should make a post on that but like tldr victorian arthurian poetry good. most of it. victorian arthurian content tho is really in a whole different world as compared to medieval lit so like. well leave all the generally post medieval stuff off for a min asjkldfskld

Since I enjoy Munchkin and I enjoy crit role I decided to take Marisha up on her comment about a Crit role Munchkin as a side project during coursework breaks... I’m sure it is wholey unbalanced as I kinda just threw it together, but hopefully someone will find some form of joy in it.

october 13 i finally got his number after over a month of trying to figure out how. i depersonalized it right after by saying i just needed to get more people in the class's numbers. you know like an emotionally available genius.

slowly i realized all his encouragement and helpfulness was starting to wane. and i REALIZED. like fucking woke up in a cold sweat when it hit that this guy has absolutely no fucking reason to think that i like him. great. so i was ready to mope and cry about how everyone leaves me and its all my fault until i got a grip and said no. im pulling this ginger ass marketing major if its the last goddamn thing i do.

so i talked to my sister (i dont come to her with ANYTHING on my mind, so.) and basically after much struggle she helped me decide to commit to the valiant and taxing efforts of a) looking at him when he talked and b) maybe even checking him out. great. awesome i can do those

so heres where things REALLLY started heating up

october 20 i checked out his hands. like i noticed them before (and LIKED what i saw) (hed wear 3 rings two on his right index & ring finger and one on his left middle) but this day he was popping his knuckles so i Watched him. and he Saw me watching him. so you know what he did. ? so more weeks passed, at one point i tried texting him like small talk and hed take fucking 5 ever to respond and eventually let the conversation die. theres like 8 messages total between us lmao. all the while he continued flaunting his hands like a fucking thot.

so all the way into december that MADNESS continued and we also just. got more and more Comfortable around each other with each week. it was less giddiness and more genuine open mutual enjoyment. we liked talking to each other and got along really well but there was still Tension that neither of us were acknowledging, much less acting on.

so FINALLY end of november i decided i was gonna ask him out. i was thinking about how and decided id ask him out on the last day if he didnt ask me out first. thats how Into It he seemed and how much he seemed to be fine with showing.

so. the last day of the semester comes. december 15. we were friendlier and more comfortable than we'd ever been before and neither of us were interested in being discreet in checking the other out. so. at one point when we were alone i asked him if we can talk after class and his voice went all Soft the way it does when he talks to me and he said “yeah. for sure.” after that its like our back and forth was Shut Off. he wasnt laughing at my jokes or even acknowledging me. i didnt really worry about it. so i hung back for like 30 whole minutes after class while he was getting something done and at last we were on the parking lot sidewalk when we had the Conversation

he asked "so what was it you wanted to tell me?" and let me talk from there. (he was looking at me in a flirtyish way at first, like “are you about to say what i think youre about to say?”). and after lots of stammering and rambling in circles and saying "uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" a whole lot, (at some point i looked up at him and. his gaze Shifted. it wasnt flirty and smooth it was. all soft. and gentle. hed looked at me like that in flashes the entire semester but this was full, undivided attention and like i was made of gold. it just. Calmed me and i thought “everything is gonna be okay”) i said "i like you. and i have forrrr .... just about all of the semester." and like stuttered out some more stuff and bit more and was about to say more when i realized he looked like he had something to say. so i tapered off my ramblings to let him speak and you know what he said? anyways we're both great at feigning friendliness and glossing over awkwardness (acting, even. ha ha) so we said goodbye from there. from an outside perspective, such as that of the very confused teacher sitting in her car wondering what two very different students who barely actually speak out loud to each other could possibly have to say that would last for nearly 10 minutes while she had to pick up her kids from school, it looked like just two people chit chatting, one of them being weirdly flustered despite her really cool and sexy tough and extremely convincing exterior. maybe she didnt take her meds that morning. but yeah. we both said "see you in a couple weeks!" and then left.

so then i was spiraling for completely DIFFERENT reasons than i had been for the entire semester. i was angry and jilted and HURT. and heres the thing, i can handle being told no. for any reason. if he did all that and turned out he just didnt want to commit to anything, thats fine i could handle that. but driving back it actually hit like what the fuck. he was TALKING TO SOMEONE ELSE????? fucked up man. its not just unfair to ME it was unfair to THAT person. so winter break (which only lasted a couple weeks) passed and i was PISSED and then. classes started up again.

(the first couple weeks were on zoom due to the omicron surge)

so january 5, over a zoom call he looked guilty as hell. guilt ridden - not trippy - but ridden. as all hell. we both backed away from the screen when the other spoke and we didnt look at each other the same, and then i thought you know what? if im pissed at him thats my business, but i dont need the teacher seeing i have beef with her personal favorite. AND im not a pussy AND im not about to distract anyone else AND im not gonna show that im a Person That Catches Feelings. so i, the amazing faker of emotions, (had to) put effort into basically copypasting my demeanor towards others onto my demeanor towards him (and ok i mightve smiled. very big. for seconds on end. at one point at him.). and he took that shit as a green light. his expression brightened up like the sun coming out on a cloudy day. he went back to nodding when i talked and visibly paying lots of attention and outright smiling when i talked about things that make me happy and the people i love.just as he was before all the bullshit was revealed

anyways after that class i cried. i was HOPING that i just misread things. that he just wanted to fuck and didnt have a Thing for me personally. no. fucking. dice. its like he was confirming i misread nothing, i wasnt a #1 potential fleshlight, i was second best to someone else. and i wasnt off the hook because he still wasnt over me. great.

so this is where we are now. the second week he wasnt there and the third its like he was testing the waters by making an effort to talk to me and he made me laugh. a lot. like he was enjoying the act. and seeing me smile lots. great.

this last class (2/23) was fun (and over zoom bc weather issues). its hard because this semester started with both of us just going out of our way to feign lack of awkwardness and prove to a third perspective that theres no type of feelings (be it tender touchy or sour) between us and now its just devolved into plain talking to each other again, more than we ever have before because (at least on my part), things were acknowledged and he seems like. to have some intention to show reciprocation.

-Yoongi was alone in his room since he wanted to pack up his stuff before leaving the day after. 

-When it happened, Yoongi was just baffled.

-He didnt see it coming at all. Omega. It was so heavy and hefty on his tongue. He saw himself as a Beta. He had high hopes to present as a Beta. 

-To summarise this, Yoongi had an existential crisis. Like a nanosecond of existential crisis before he abandoned his duct tape and boxes and messy folded clothes on the carpet and just fumbled around for his phone bcs he needed to at least google about “How to REALLY know you are an omega and not just shitting yourself” (he did this while going to the mini refrigerator to grab himself a drink bcs he just CAN’t DEaL right now).

-He was somewhere between his second and third can of soda when Taehyung suddenly swing the front door of his dorm room open and the soda slipped from right under the pads of Yoongi’s fingers. 

-Here, he briefly looked at Taehyung before slowly turning to watch the fizzy liquid dribble out from the open can rolling on the floor. 

TH: HEY hyung I think I left my- What are you doing?

-There was a pause where Yoongi said nothing and Taehyung just tried to decipher whatever scene he landed himself into bcs from where he was standing, Taehyung saw Yoongi on his knees, body angled towards the refrigerator, can of soda abandoned and sweetened liquid soaking his jeans. 

-The silence broke when Yoongi let out a loud, LOUD painful wail. 

-That’s when Taehyung straight up knew something was awfully wrong bcs the last time he heard that, Yoongi forgot to kiss Min Holly goodbye after leaving his Daegu home and only realised that when they were both already on the bullet train to Seoul.

druid rescue

Todays DMs was running DarkSun and we started almost an hour late because a new girl is joining the group instead of the usual reason- two of the younger players bickering.

the new guy, the halfling in this game, showed up and so did one of the older players, I cant think of what his character is right now, though I got the distinct impression he just wasnt feelin it tonight. I think he mostly showed up to catch up with the other older player and find out about the sunday game.

the new girl is playing a druid which was very handy for the dm because all she had to do to seamlessly add her to the game was to switch out the npc druid we were going to rescue anyway with the new character. I suppose it was nice for the new girl too maybe? She got a pretty good set of time just to observe the group and stuff? I dunno if shes played any games like this before, and she seemed kinda shy or at least very unsure of the group? so the observation period while we formulated the rescue hopefully gave time for acclimation? 

When we last played we went to this dwarf village, trying to make sure they weren’t going to die from poisoned water. the local elven town/fortress was cultivating toxic plants around the oasis- the plants leeched into the water making it deadly to anything non elven- animals included. the dwarves did not receive us well but our cleric gave them like 30+ gallons of water and purified everything they gathered from the poisoned oasis so they eventually decided they were ok enough with us.

they told us they used to work with this druid who would keep the oasis clean for everyone but eventually she just disappeared, turns out the elves kidnapped her and had no intention of releasing her unless the dwarves picked up and left. the dwarves didn’t have much intention to do that as they built their village there so they could uncover the remains of a much older dwarven settlement found there. We agreed to help and rescue the druid.

they gave us a “metal short sword of cure wounds”? we are pretty sure none of us can use the sword as an actual weapon though, I might be able to because of my class and if we have a rogue they should be able to. the dm mentioned some classes are specifically able to use it without an extra skill. I brought it up to her, “ I think because my class is psion I can use it? this pdf says short swords are possible starting equipment for me? I assume that means I can use it?” but she was just like: ”everybody is psionic, its darksun.” and I dunno what to make of that. she’s been pretty snippy with me the last several weeks I’ve gone so I dunno if this was that again or she just misunderstood what I meant?

the halfing took it because he knows he cant use it but somebody having it would prevent fighting over it (though the only ones fighting for it were the ones who also specifically couldnt use it?). and the cleric I guess SHOULD have something to heal with, it just feels right.

on the way we notice a single scout watching over the road, we hide and I ask if I can clairvoyance the place we were going to to see its defenses and stuff is there really just one scout? are there archers watching him? is there a back door, but the dm looked distressed and I know that look- I know I have to tell you because you CAN do that but because story I dont WANT you to do that -so I changed it to see the scout better, whats he up to does he look at ease? is there anyone else around him? the dm liked that much better.

turns out we caught him sleeping on the job.

so we ambush him. the half giant grabs scout and the halfing starts interrogating. we learn that not all the citizens were on board with the kings orders to poison the oasis, it was equal parts needlessly cruel and also just kinda inconvenient because they too have herd animals that need water but... its toxic now....

we kill some sentries and the thrikreen opens the gate for us and we find an elf girl getting attacked by some badies? turns out shes the princess. we save her and she seems to also be on our side but it just felt too easy so of course she betrayed us. every time we rescue somebody so far it hasnt gone well. we killed er before starting on the guards who came to help the princess escape from us.

we wander around a bit and come to the options- go kill the king now or go find the druid. we knew where the king was easy enough but there wer still a lot of places to look for the druid. I clarvoyance and find her in the basement of a tower we hadnt explored yet because t was on the other side of a bridge? the halfling gets tossed by the half giant WAY across the bridge to the tower by the half giant and turns ecoplasmic before splatting to death on the wall and slides through the walls and floors to get to the basement. the rest of us start combat with shit I think she said it was 75 guards? 

every check and save I made I rolled great, now that combat has started in a big way my dice decide this is the time to betray me and I only like two or three times rolled over a 9 while the guards were all ac 10.

thankfully the other half elf and the druid once she and the halfing arrived both have great crowd control abilities. so the guards went from being all blinded by the other half elf to 30 of them being incapacitated by something called wyvern-watch? or whither-watch? for up to 8 hours.  I didn’t hear well, the druid spoke very softly. it was even with my treacherous dice very easy. because of their sheer strength a number of the party members simply had to roll 2 or more to hit and probably 1 shot everything in our way, though we did take a surprising bit of damage for how quick it was. 

next session will address what we do with the 30 incapacitated guards. I suggested giving them the option to swear loyalty to the new king- unnamed scout npc -this was a popular idea however the halfing and half giant have decided that we’e just gonna kill them. to send a message to the over citizens not to oppose their new king or else.... unless it turn out hes actually a dick and wont share the water then whatever fuck him. 

the halfing makes our water, so hes kind of extorted his way into being party leader, so we dont really argue unless its worth it and these 30 assholes are really not worth it. besides I’m very curious how this bloody legacy will effect the new kings reign. assuming the dm does anything with this mess later.
