they say you never really get over your first love, katsuki bakugou can attest to that.

in the summer after his eighteen birthday, his parents take him on one last family vacation before he breaks into the hero industry. they go abroad, somewhere far away from the trail of heartbreak left in japan— it’d been a hard year. he’d lost a lot. bakugou’s vision shakes a little in his grey-pinkish eye, his skin is bumpy with scars over his eyes and under his shirts. he’s a little more afraid to go in public in fear of being recognised.

so, katsuki takes that venture abroad. where no one knows who he is and what he’s been through.

katsuki’s parents like to explore, they drag him under a sun that’s a little foreign and not like japan’s across a strange city to try new foods that expand his horizons and makes his tastebuds a little happier. they force him to take photos in front of old bridges and historic monuments— though his dad snaps a nice one of bakugou walking through the bustling streets, a backwards baseball cap resting on his nest of hair.

on the last night, they have dinner at a beachside restaurant— bakugou excuses himself when the noises get a little too much and remind him of a time where nearly he lost his life. he stumbles out, down the steps and along the vast stretch of sand looking for the space to breathe along the waterfront. waves crash hard against the shore like the anxiety attacking his brain and katsuki has to crouch down to get a hold of himself before the world tilts too far and he falls off the invisible edge.

“are you okay?”

when he looks up, red eyes narrowly avoiding the glare of the sunset— he sees a girl. her skin looks like it’s been kissed by the solar system, beautiful brown tone glowing under the golden night— accompanied brown doe eyes boring deep into his own, reading his soul as if it were only made up of the constellations beginning to dot themselves in the sky. she has these braids he’s never quite seen before but they frame the roundness of her cheeks perfectly and…he’s never felt love before, aside from the kind you have for friends and family and bakugou doesn’t believe in fate. everything happening for a reason and shit.

because that would mean what happened to him…well, it would mean he deserved it.

but in this moment, the moment this girl offers him her hand and crouches down to see if he’s okay. he feels it. love, filling the blood that pumps through his beating heart. slowly, tenderly, his calloused and marred hand takes her own— the girl making a small noise of content as they sit together, bottoms wet from the sand.

they stay there, together for a while. katsuki and this strange girl he’s only just met— listening to the seagulls call for one another just metres above their heads accompanied by the waves that roll along the shoreline as if they were made to be together. it calms him down, and sure enough bakugou’s chest stops it’s heaving and the scary noises in his head back off for the minute. his mother screams his name in the distance and the girl looks over the blonde’s shoulder with her lips in a pout and brows furrowed— quizzical as if she’s putting together pieces of a puzzle.

“oh, you probably didn’t understand me earlier, right?” she speaks suddenly yet hesitantly, her voice filling his ears like cotton, in broken japanese instead of the fluent english from earlier. “a-are you okay?”

bakugou hums shyly, cheeks flashing red. “‘m fine now. couldn’t breathe before.”

“i’m glad—“ she starts to reply but bakugou’s mother has always been persistent and irritating especially at the worst times— yelling his name again. the pair’s shoulders rise like cats on the prowl and the girl let’s out the cutest laugh he’s ever heard in his life. “i think your mum’s calling, katsuki.”

“s-shut up!” bakugou scrambles to his feet just as the girl does, brushing the sand from her warm skin.

“you should go! i’ll see you around, kay?”

she’s gone before he can even blink, as if she were never there. the only way he truly knows that the girl was real is all thanks to his mother— mitsuki pestering him with questions about the girl all the way back to the restaurant. who was she? did you know her? are you okay? they all go through one ear and come out of the other. all bakugou can think about from then is how she thought she would see him again.

which wouldn’t happen, since he was leaving tomorrow.

for the next ten years, memories of the girl with honeyed brown skin and darling chocolate eyes haunt katsuki’s every waking moment. he tried everything in his power to forget her, his first love— even if they moments they shared together were brief, they’re all he thinks about when the world gets a little too ugly and a little too heavy to sit on his shoulders.

no one had ever been that gentle with him, treated him so kindly at first sight— after seeing all of him, scarred and all. no one has ever compared to her since.

that is until the warm tones of your voice echo through the dynamight agency one day— your japanese a little stronger than it was almost a decade ago when it changed the trajectory of katsuki bakugou’s life.

“h-hi, i’m here for the assistant role for um…dynamight?” you say, still shy and hesitant, still quiet and cute.

and only the heavens know how thankful katsuki is for not forgetting his first love— for remembering the way you talk, the way your eyes shimmer as he rounds the corner and reveals himself to you. taller than you remember, older and wiser than in your head— but still your first love too.

“you’re okay!” you squeak upon his reveal, clutching your bag in one shaky hand— voice wobbling as if you’d been worried about bakugou this entire time.

the blonde nods simply, trying to remember what it was he said to you all those years ago when you’d first asked him that.

“‘m fine, feel like i can breathe again.”

I'm actually gonna start this list with a 5sos adjacent song, the lead singer, Luke Hemmings, he has a solo album (incredible album, it's called when facing the things we turn away from, maybe check it out if you feel like it) but he has a song called slip away that I can't hear without thinking about buddie, I even made a video (you can watch it here if you want).

Invisible is the most pre 118 Buck song ever and I take no criticism about that. That one has a set because I didn't feel emotionally stable enough to make the video lol. And TEARS! is very Eddie coded (here's the video lol). High is also really Buck coded. (Edit)

I like making castaway, if you don't know and moodswings about the cemetery and the lawsuit, the moments where we question how we can keep watching buddie breakup if they're not even together. If you don't know is not available in the us tho, so if you're from there you may not be able to hear it. I like picturing established buddie to disconnected so that's another one. I also have video edits of caramel, and lover of mine, those are a bit about me really liking the song (lover of mine is why my url is what it is lol) and forcing it to fit but they are really good songs.

Some blanket recommendations that I take out of context to fit them are: ghost of you, talk fast, close as strangers, story of another us, you don't go to parties (there's a line about a couch lol) and lonely heart. And I am legally required to recommend jet black heart to anyone asking about 5sos. And outerspace/carry on. And my personal favorite 5sos songs are airplanes, red line and wrapped around your finger (I am writing a whole buddie fic based on wrapped so maybe you can make it about them kspakapakap)

And I have a tag for 5sos inspired edits. I'm pretty sure all the songs I've used in an edit before are here tho. (I went to check and that's a lie: other songs I have used for 911 are: emotions (this one is very Eddie coded), bad omens (highkey one of the best 5sos songs), kill my time, not in the same way, vapor, tomorrow never dies, thin white lies, take what you want and bleach, but these are mostly out of context lines I think would fit them)

A PROLOGUE IN THE MAKING!

THE SOPHOMORE HALLWAY WAS FILLED WITH KIDS returning from summer break and entering Liberty High's newly painted halls of Hell. Wadded up paper balls are thrown in the air, the jocks in their lettermen jackets are giving out bro-hugs, the goths are redoing their eyeliners by using the screens of their phones, cheerleaders heading to their bathrooms to talk, and everyone else - yes, the loners, too - are heading to their newly assigned lockers for the year.

Struggling to pass through excited and annoying students, a girl hunched over with a guitar case hooked onto her bag with her backpack makes her way to the left side of the hall with eyes squinted a crumbled paper in her hands. On it was her class schedule.

"319." The girl mutters looking at the long rows of blue lockers on either side of the hall - that isn't blocked by chivalrous jocks in all their glory - and discovers the worse. "Oh fucking hell, I'm a bottom locker. Fuck." She groans realizing the odds were not in her favor this year.

Third to last locker at the bottom, she leans her bags against the wall and crouches down. 22-3-5 a combination of numbers she twists in to unlock the metal door. With a few tries she managed to get it opened, and found the emptiness soon covered with her decorations: magnetic pencil holder, a mirror, a few stickers which were prohibited from school grounds (the weed leaf, "good vibes only," etc.), and inside she hung a beaded dream catcher.

As she zipped her backpack and stuffed her books inside, she eyed her guitar case and pursed her lips. This is when a long locker would come in handy, but she guessed the music room would be her saving grace to protect her baby when she was in class.

"I'm, uh, I'm Hannah Baker." The brunette tucked her hair behind her ear with a shy smile, and her green eyes cried hopefulness.

Rubbing the sore part of her head, the unfortunate girl chuckles in disbelief.

like oddly emotional over two years of calm???? like for how much i loved yb, calm was the era that brought me community from this fanbase, inspired me creatively, and really truly carried me through one of the most terrifying and confusing periods of my life. i’ll never forget sitting in my bedroom on the night of march 26, wearing a cute outfit (which really was astounding a week into quarantine lol) sipping on discounted sweet wine from the corner store (the only place i wasn’t completely terrified to go to at that point) listening to these four dudes listen to their album and just goof around. calm brought community and creating new friendships during a time where it literally wasn’t safe to participate in those things beyond virtual spaces. i was so scared i wouldn’t know how to make friends in a post-grad world that looked like what spring 2020 did and that album helped to change that. i’m so thankful for calm, for 5sos, and for all of you. happy bday calm 💛

I never settled on one, but my favorites on the list I made are Thrill Punk, Star Beam, and Sonic Sun.

Definitely! The definite ones are: the “Origin of Love” tattoo from Hedwig and the Angry Inch; “I’ve lost my fear of falling” from “It’s Not a Fashion Statement”; my grandma’s initial in her handwriting. I’d also like to get one inspired by Carrie Fisher, and I’ve always kinda wanted a little heart on my wrist.

I’m actually a music major and a musician! I mainly sing, but I can play guitar, ukulele, piano, bass guitar, and saxophone, and I’m trying to learn flute.

Sure, why not? They’re as mopey as anyone else in the scene. There’s way too much gatekeeping.

Touring with Ashton and being his muse is a mood

-meeting him a few weeks before he has to go on tour but he immediately feels  a connection

-after your first date he goes home and words just begin flowing

-he has to see you again

-you just have this… natural thing. he doesn’t know what it is, but you just do something to him

-he goes to hang out with the others and they’re kinda just like “looks like you found a muse.”

-he’s never felt this way. he’s never written music this way or had this many ideas and its like every time he sees you he has something to write about

-and he doesn’t want to loose that

-he doesn’t want to go on tour and loose you

-so about a week before tour, you sleep together for the first time and while cuddling after, Ashton’s just like “do you want to come on tour with me?”

-and you’re kinda shocked because its kinda sudden and you thought the whole thing would have an expiration date but now it doesn’t have to? “i mean, are you sure? we only met a few weeks ago”

-”so this is going to sound really stupid, but you’re sort of like a muse to me. when i’m with you it makes me want to make music. it’s a lot of pressure, if you don’t want to come thats fine-” “no i’ll come. but am i coming as a friend or-” “you could come as my girlfriend? unless it’s too fast.”

-he’s certain about you. more certain than he’s ever been about almost anything in his life

-and just like that, Ashton Irwin, drummer of 5sos , who was supposed to be just a fling, is your boyfriend and you’re going on tour with him

-meeting his friends for the first time and they’ve heard all about you and seen all the new stuff Ashton’s been writing about you

-its kinda odd, being his muse, because you’ll be doing the most mundane things and he just thinks you’re gorgeous and wants to write it down

-he shows you all his music influences on your first flight, sharing ear phones, his arms wrapped around you as you talk about music

-”so are you finally going to show me some of the things you’ve been writing about me?”

-he gets kinda shy about it, but pulls out his phone and shows you his notes. there’s a lot of small, gushy musings and kinda cliche rhymes but its the sweetest thing ever and you can definitely see that as soon as he refines the ideas, they could make amazing songs

-he has your hand in his at almost all times

-its almost like he’s afraid you’re going to leave or get lost or something

-holding your hand as he pulls you off the flight, as you get into the van, as you drive to the first venue, only once he’s sure you’re settled and you’ll be okay does he finally let go

-”we just got off a 12 hour flight, how do you still look so gorgeous?”

-he gets so hyped for concerts and to see him so happy and pumped up is a dream

-long, passionate kisses before he leaves to go on stage

-going into the crowd to watch the shows and having your eyes on him the entire time

-he’s just so god damned sexy when he’s drumming

-he comes off stage and you’re both hot and bothered

I was tagged by @haztobegood to post ten songs I’ve been listening to lately! Thank youuu! 

Okay, I basically just listen to pop music, mostly top 40. So this list will not be very surprising. haha

1. Two of Us - Louis Tomlinson. Just have to put this here at the top because I put it on every play list I make and let it murder me periodically. Actually, I put all of his songs on every playlist, but I’ll list other things besides taking up a bunch of slots for Louis. 

2. Truth Hurts - Lizzo. How fun is it to sing along to this song? 

3. Out of Love - Alessia Cara. I saw her sing this live and good lord she’s amazing. Her voice is just spectacular live.

4. Lost in Japan - Shawn Mendes. I’m still just like...not over this song. I think it’s because I have a fic in mind for it that I’m never going to write. lol. So now it won’t leave me alone. Anyway, I’m going to put the idea here and maybe it will cleanse me. So I wrote a fic a year ago called Sit Next To Me that’s famous/not famous (sort of). And I keep picturing pop star Harry calling writer Louis and telling him he’s not too far away from Japan to come see him. 

5. Easier - 5SOS. Again, I wrote a fic using this as some inspiration. I promise not EVERYthing is about fan fiction. But also...everything is about fan fiction.

6. Sunflower - Post Malone. It’s just such a summer song and it reminds me of Louis. alskdjfasdf. 

7. There’s No Way - Lauv & Julia Michaels. oof. I love this. A friends to lovers au just waiting to be written. lmaoooo

8. Give Yourself a Try - The 1975. Listen, I adore Matty and this entire album and all their albums and yes he has crept into my fan fics. I don’t write canon, but I write Matty as canon. lmaoooo.

9. A Whole New World - Zayn & Zhavia Ward. I’m still screaming over this. I loved Aladdin as a kid and Zayn singing this song is like mind blowing for me.

1. Hello ~ PRETTYMUCH: honestly this song is such a BOP (!!) I was actually soooo obsessed with their EP when it came out, and I still listen to them a lot. Definitely a great jam for the summer or if you want a moodbooster

2. Good Girls ~ 5 Seconds Of Summer: OMG this is such a throwback!!! I used to be SUPER into 5SOS when I was little (back when She Looks So Perfect was on the radio, I was like 9!) then I dropped them for a bit before rediscovering them around when Want You Back came out. Seriously, their music is so good.

3. bitches broken hearts ~ Billie Eilish: I love the vibe of this song and of Billie’s work in general, she’s honestly one of my favorite artists ever. The first time I listened to this, I honestly fell in love. It’s definitely one of those songs that I listen to while I read or for calm and long night time car rides. It combines her soothing voice and her use of hard bass so well but it keeps the vibe alive with the piano in the song. So good, would definitely recommend if you haven’t listened to it yet.

4. Different Colors ~ Walk The Moon: when their album TALKING IS HARD was a thing, OMG that was like all I listened to. I listened to Walk The Moon so much when I was in middle school, along with tons of other alternative and rock bands I grew up with. My dad’s favorites are all rock, emo and alternative so it’s definitely a sound I’ve been familiar with for my entire life.

5. Friend, Please ~ Twenty One Pilots: would this list even be complete without a TØP song?? I was almost as obsessed with them in middle school as I am with Why Don’t We now, still am honestly lol. They’re music is so meaningful but they keep it catchy in a weird new pop alternative rap kind of thing. Definitely another one of my favorites (also I’m pretty sure I haven’t listened to this song since like 2016 haha)

6. The Phoenix ~ Fall Out Boy: FOB is one of the bands I grew up with (I listened to emo music before I was even emo LOL) because of my dad, and honestly I love their music. Do I listen to them now as much as I used to? No, but I definitely will still break them out every once in a while to jam to. Their style is more of the down and dirty instruments kind of band, unlike bands now, and it’s definitely a style I still love.

7. I Depend on You ~ Why Don’t We: this list SERIOUSLY would not be complete without my favorite band of ALL TIME!! (I, of course, know all the words to all their songs 😁)Why Don’t We Just is lowkey SO underrated, but it’s definitely one of my favorites. It shows off their vocals well but still keeps their original style. I found them around when the Something Different EP came out and honestly they’ve helped me soooo much. I was going through some rough shit, and while it’s cliche, they definitely helped pull me out. I Depend on You is a fr bop, listen to it if you haven’t already.

8. American Beauty/American Psycho ~ Fall Out Boy: omg another one! I’m not surprised tbh lol. This song has such a good vibe, definitely find myself head banging to it every once in a while. While FOB is technically an emo band, I listen to them whenever I want to listen to upbeat music haha.

9. Nobody Gotta Know ~ Why Don’t We: are any of us surprised that there’s another wdw song? No. This song is another favorite, and reminds me of the beginning of the band and how things used to be. Sometimes I wish I could turn back time and relive that era again, because in my opinion it will always be the best. Also, the MUSIC VIDEO IS TOO CUTE (!!) props to old Logan for coming up with the idea. I can’t deny the fact that he honestly is a good filmmaker. Obviously, because he gets the views. Back when he wasn’t a crazy hated person, I definitely looked up to him when it came to making videos. I still do honestly, I don’t know how he’s STILL going. It’s admirable, even though he’s done such bad things.

10. There’s No Way ~ Lauv ft. Julia Micheals: this song is so gorgeous, and such a good way to end. I love (or lauv haha) Lauv’s music. The fact that he writes, produces and creates all his own music is so inspiring, and his vibe is really really amazing. His album too, I met you when I was 18, is one of my favorite albums ever. He’s such an underrated but inspiring artist. TOO good. He’s definitely effected my own style with music.

Hey, I'm in a music slump. Do you have any bands that really inspire you?

Literally, I’ve been listening to Panic! At The Disco’s new album Pray for the Wicked since it’s come out, and there’s no stopping me, lol 

I’m also really digging Florence and the Machine’s new album too! I was singing “Big God” under my breath the entire time I was grocery shopping yesterday, lol 

So really, for the last two weeks, I’ve only been listening to P!ATD, Florence, Shawn Mendes’s new album, and 5SOS’s new album on repeat. It’s almost ridiculous, but all albums are so good!

Unpopular 5sos/5sos fam opinions

Because I have nothing better to do lol

1. Albums don’t need to be 3285338490 songs long. Like obviously having a lot of music is good in a way cause it means more sos for everybody, but I’d honestly much rather have a 10-12 song album that was perfected, where every song was their absolute best, than a nearly 20 song album where a few are tbh terrible. Like, including deluxe + target edition, sgfg literally had 19 songs total, and that’s not even including the others on the skh ep (like over and out) that came out 2 months begore sgfg. I don’t even know how many songs were on self titled since they had so many bonus track albums for different places, but it was at least 16 songs. Most other bands that I listen to have 10-12 song albums and guess what!! The albums ten to be amazing beginning to end rather than having like 5 amazing songs, some okay songs, and some very clearly not as good songs. 5sos should be valuing quality over quantity. I know they’ve said before that it’s hard to narrow songs down but guess what!! It’s hard for other bands too, but they manage!!

2. This ones more about the 5sos fam than 5sos. Listen, I miss 5sos with my entire heart literally every single day and I’m absolutely dying to hear new music as much as the next person, but for the love of god yall, waiting for new music is not as bad as yall make it sound!! Holy fuck it hasn’t even been two (2) years since sgfg yet. Idk what bands yall follow, or maybe the problem is following a band is new for some of you guys, but 2-3 years between album releases is the norm. I was even seeing people expecting new music just a year after sgfg! Yall gotta be more patient!

3. Going off of #2, it’s so hypocritical to be complaining constantly about the break. Once again, I miss them too, but you can’t be posting nonstop during their tours about how 5sos don’t get enough breaks, and then bitch about how they’re taking too long during breaks. First off, 5sos already tour way more places than a lot of bands do and in a way shorter amount of time. If you look at other bands, a lot of them don’t even do complete world tours. They might do a North American tour, take a break, then a Europe tour, break, then Asia tour (etc). Some don’t even do all of NA. I’ve seen bands do like only one side of the US and call that a “tour”. What 5sos did during slfl was crazy impressive and as much as I miss them, they 100% deserved this nearly year off touring. I know a lot of you are coming from 1D and are used to getting an album every single year (I actually didn’t know they did that my mind is blown rn?? That’s so many??) and tours constantly, but high key that’s how bands break up and resent their work. What 5sos are doing rn with their long break is 100% normal for every other band in the scene. If yall want 5sos to escape the “boy band” label so damn much, let them be like every other band and not overwork them to pieces.

4. Listen up Ashton’s singing voice is beautiful and makes angels cry. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. Having said that, there’s nothing wrong with never having Ashton sing, nor is there anything wrong with Luke being the band’s frontman. I love 4/4 with my entire heart and always will but it’d be perfectly fine for the focus to be put on Luke considering idk if yall noticed but,, it’s normal for bands to have leads lol. Also, how good they sing shouldn’t in any way shape their overall status as talented musicians. Plus, it’s mf hard to sing while drumming and the poor boy is a puddle of sweat at the end of concerts idk why yall want Ashton to sing so bad??

In conclusion please stop projecting the expectations and level of rigor that 1D were held to onto 5sos because not only are 5sos not 1D, but 1D is literally not like any band out there. Let 5sos act how normal bands act. Let them exist the way other bands do in this scene and other music scenes that 5sos are fans of.

Breaks are normal. Having short and long awaited albums is normal. Not having every single member singing is normal. And since 5sos always cite other rock/pop punk bands as their inspirations, I’d say it’s fair to hold them to the same standards of the bands that they aspire to be like, not the band that they opened for a couple years ago.

Youngblood Album First Impressions

These are my initial thought after listening to the album for the first time.

Youngblood

I was at work when the studio version of this song first dropped, I was standing in the foyer as I waited for campus transportation to arrive. I was familiar with the song because I had listened to live recordings to prepare me for my concert, which at the time was three days away. My jaw dropped. The live version was good, but the studio version was a killer. This song is a  deserves to be danced to, HARD. In concert, I don’t feel like this song goes as hard, and for that reason, I prefer the studio version. It’s funny because I thought this song went hard, I WAS NOT PREPARED. 

I think this was an excellent title track and song to start the album. It encapsulates the feel of the entire album from the production, singing, and the lyrics. 

Favorite Lyrics:

“Surrender my everything/'Cause you made me believe you're mine“

This line is so vulnerable and it tugs at my heartstrings.

“When you looking at those strangers/Hope to God you see my face”

I am a sucker for these lyrics after making eye contact with Luke during the concert, but I also relate this to the crush that at had at the time, and the friends that are no longer friends.

Want You Back

When I first listened to  this song I was like wHo iS tHiS bAnD?? I think this was a good lead single (had they known the success of youngblood that might’ve been better, but it might not have gotten as popular if it came out of nowhere) to introduce the new song. Compared to rest of the album this song is fairly tame, I’ve listened to it so many times that ofc this is 5sos. I just wow I’m so proud of them (imma try not to write this through the entire post bc thats basically what I did on twitter all night)

Lie to Me

Out of the non-singles performed on tour (+valentine, talk fast, moving along), this one is my favorite. I fell in love with it instantly. It makes me think of Come Back… Be Here which is my second favorite Taylor Swift song. Ngl, hearing the studio version was a tad disappointing because I was hoping that there would be piano in the song, even though why would there be? Lol. It’s not like there was piano in the live version. Listening to the studio version made me understand the boys when they talk about the contrast the sad lyrics with the happy beachy vibe instrumental. I still LOVE this song, it was just a bit of a shock because I had unrealistic expectations for the studio version (I think I was thinking closer to Ghost of You vibes), regardless, I will request they release a piano cover of the song. The short clips of Luke on the piano is not enough. The harmonies in this song are so good and my hear hurts over the lyrics. 

There is violin in this song and that needs to be appreciated. There’s also a certain sound at the end of the chorus that sounds like something else but I can’t remember what.

Valentine

This song took me a while to get into. 1) The rhythm is very different from anything else I have heard by them 2) The word choices in the chorus, there are some words that automatically turn me off of songs they just sound cringy to me. After listening to the song enough I have gotten us to it and enjoy the song.

I don’t know why it took me so long to realize, well I do, it’s because I had to get used to the lyrics, but this song is HOT. Another good song to perform on tour to introduce how SEXY this album is, literally. It’s funny because I normally am not a fan of albums when they’re too sexual but I am so in love with this album and they also address the topic in a classy, normalizing way, that doesn’t just focus on being horny, there’s an additional psychological dimension within their song.

Talk Fast

This was the only song they sang on the tour that I hadn’t heard the studio version, my jaw was on the floor (I mean it was for most songs but lol). This was my second favorite non-single song they performed on tour, it has a fun ‘80′s inspired feel. The bass (and the drums) stand out in this song.

Moving Along

This song also took me a little while to get into, besides the beat, I think it has to do with the more talk quality of the song. And again, the interesting lyrics. But now you see me bopping. I feel like they chose very unique songs to perform on tour and I appreciate that it also gave me the time to love them, so now I can properly enjoy them now that the album is out.

If Walls Could Talk

This is the first new song that I heard and it was so exciting. From the first listen I knew that this is going to be one of my favorite songs. Which makes me scream because this is a straight sex song. This song just makes me smile and makes me want to dance. 

This is the first song that Ashton has a proper feature and it makes me so happy :) I love the drums and the piano in this song. Michael’s guitar part during most of the song brings a lightness during the song but then during the bridge it brings the gritty, we're getting down and dirty aspect to the song. 

-Disclaimer- I will not talk about bass enough through this post bc I do not have the best ear for bass, I am just not as familiar with the instrument. I can tell in some songs, but in others, I have to listen very closely but even then I don’t necessarily hear it (I mean I’m pretty sure Cal will be playing the piano in this song so... it makes sense)

I love this line. This is a song that makes you want to put your head back, dance and get lost in the music. It is a perfect representation of the song.

This lines really brings perspective. I find this song to be very vulnerable. The line is saying that it’s seen everything you’ve done within these walls, the sex, the desire, but also you break down crying, the look of falling in love, anger, and frustration as you hit the wall… The walls know your everything.

Better Man

Another Taylor Swift reference? Lol. But actually, this song reminds me of Ed Sheeran. I even feel like how it’s sung gives me ed vibes, the guitar, down to the mhhh. 

This song is so cute.

This line stood out right away it was sad and relatable.

Another fav. This song goes so hard. It reminds me a little bit of ONE OK ROCK. There is a heavy guitar part, Ashton kills the drums at the end, and there's a shaker?? in this song too.

I mean... this is about Luke. It can easily apply to the other boys, but there’s a reason why this is a Luke dominate album.

I like a lot of lines in the album, the first verse is a standout, idk, this is a very sad relatable song.

Why Won’t You Love Me

Lol the first few seconds makes me think of Chole by Emblem3 

This was the first song where I was still and entranced while listening to it. This is a very cinematic song, which is very beautiful but also makes me think of someone (cough cough) staring out a rainy window.

While I have never been in a relationship I can relate to this song, specifically to friendship. Sometimes people change or need something better even if nothing actually went wrong. I think this is something important to remember with any relationship, sometimes “It’s not you, it’s me” is as true as it gets. 

The ooh at the end is cute.

Woke Up In Japan

I can’t help but think about my time in Japan while I listen to this (Even though I am actually visualizing China bc we were in a hotel for a short time, while the dorm we were in Japan was more like an apartment). This song is good, they lyrics standout the most, but it defs doesn’t stand out as much as other songs. It’s an interesting contradiction that I am trying to wrap my head around. It’s all over the place. The song is about amazing sex, the ecstasy of a night out while being in a bad mental place in another country. (even though japans probs metaphorical in this context)

This is another song that does stand out too much but it’s still GOOD.

I’m not dying, I am already dead. This song pulls at my heartstrings so much. I can’t. It also reminds me of songs that they play in ‘00 movies which makes me emo (closest I can think of I’ll be, but that’s not exactly the feel I’m going for).

This is a masterpiece.

Michael starting of the song. Yes.  This song is funky and fun. I really enjoy the instrumental arrangement in this song, Ashton’s drumming goes hard, mikey’s guitar solo, cal on the piano. It’s amazing. This isn’t my #1 but it’s defs up there (as with the next to songs)

Calum F it up. The intro to this song. I had heard that a song sounded like FOB, my friend made the direct reference last night, but not until this morning have I finally been able to hear it. Sounds similar to centuries which is one of FOB’s best songs (that I’ve heard).

And there we have it, folks. I am so incredibly proud of these boys. This album was life-changing for them, their excitement feed off to us, and it followed through. I don’t think I’ve enjoyed an album so much since Made in the AM and that was back in 2015. Well, this will all I will be talking about for a long time. So I am sorry in advance.

With the world trying the combat the novel COVID-19, showbiz, and the music industry have taken a huge hit. Tours have been postponed indefinitely and musicians from all over are ensuring to participate in digital concerts in order to heal the world during this difficult time. The Aces, American alternative pop band from Provo, Utah, agrees to the fact that music is a way to stay connected to their fans. “It’s been so fun to connect to our fans over social media, maybe more than we would have if the circumstances were different. It’s funny because we feel just as comforted by performing for them as they might feel from listening to us. We need them just as much as they might need us,” the group says who recently performed for Vh1India’s Quaruntunes.

The Aces comprises of guitarist Katie Henderson, bassist McKenna Petty, and sisters, drummer Alisa Ramirez and lead vocalist and guitarist Cristal Ramirez. The indie-pop quartet recently spoke to Bollywood Hungama about their growth as artists and how they are coping during this global health crisis.

Their first single as the Aces, ‘Stuck’, was released in 2016, eventually reaching #38 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in late 2017. The band’s second single, ‘Physical’, was released in 2017 in advance of their debut EP, ‘I Don’t Like Being Honest’. Their debut album ‘When My Heart Felt Volcanic’ released on April 6, 2018. They recently released the video of their latest track ‘Daydream’. There has been a lot of growth in their sound since their debut and the group agrees too. “We have grown up a lot since the time we made our first record. The difference between being 17 and being 23 is huge, ya know? We are just more certain of ourselves and more certain of how we want to convey our emotions. But that’s just aging really,” says the group.

Interestingly, they opted to kick-start #AcesDayDream challenge on Tik Tok. In the past few years, the platform has worked wonders for the artists as many discover music through it. “We LOVE tik tok lol,” The Aces add. “We think it’s such an amazing place to discover new music. We saw a fan of ours make the daydream dance and we loved it, so we made it a challenge!”

The Aces joined Australian band 5 Seconds of Summer for their Meet You There Tour, in support of their latest album release, ‘Youngblood‘ (2018). Following this tour, they embarked on their own North American headlining tour in support of ‘When My Heart Felt Volcanic’, the Waiting For You Tour. When asked about their experience touring with the four of them (lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Luke Hemmings, lead guitarist Michael Clifford, bassist Calum Hood, and drummer Ashton Irwin), the group says, “It was amazing! We love those boys a lot, and that tour was an absolute blast. The new record (‘Calm’) is amazing too!”

For young musicians, touring has always been a very important part of their lives. The coronavirus outbreak has put a pause on the activities. In times like these, it is difficult to keep yourself motivated. But, like everybody, they are trying to focus on what they can control. “It’s tough, not every day is the same. Sometimes you wake up feeling like you can take the world on, sometimes you wanna crawl under a rock,” says the group. “For us, it’s really about just allowing yourself to feel what you’re feeling and finding things to do that comfort you and keep you motivated. Focus on what you can control!”

In the last couple of years, there has been growth in embracing different cultures and Asian and Latin music has been taking over the charts. “It’s something that we feel so excited and inspired by. Half of us are latina, so to see everyone loving and accepting other cultures is really amazing. We wanna be a part of it,” says the group about the growth in the music. When asked if they listen to any Korean artist, they say, “We love BlackPink.”

In a time like this, The Aces would like to give comfort to their fans. “We just wanna say that we love you! We are here with you and are all in this together. We are a family now and always, and we need each other more than ever. We hope you can bring you some kind of comfort in all of this, you guys always do that for us.”

Speaking of fans, they were surprised to know India also had a fan following for their band and says, “That is incredible! We can’t wait to visit!”

Is there anything that they all are looking forward to professionally or personally once things get back to normal? “See more of the fans! Hugging them, playing shows for them,” The Aces sign off.

UNLOCK by DAY6

tl;dr, I don’t remember where I was when this first came out because I was on a break from kpop social media but, however, I do remember where I was when I first listened to I Just (the only song to ever exist), as it was an extremely transformative experience for me. This is such a well-rounded, clear, diverse album that keeps Day6′s usual style while adding extra juicy elements for the more hard-rock inspired Japanese market.

without further ado here’s why I love ever single song on this album, written like ive been imprisoned inside stan twitter for 5 years and can’t get out unless i review this album

Live Your Life: day6 japanese songs hit differently they really do. this one is an a1 prime rib example. the rolling drum (?) woosh sound right before the chorus is so sos os nice and all of the parts of this song are different feeling but still fit together completely seamlessly as expected. LISTEN, HOW THEY HAVE A GUITAR SOLO? WITH THE WOAHHHs at EVERY chorus. jae’s guitar is the backbone of this album and our society as you will read about further on if you ever get to my review of i just…….. and this song is NO different. also the lyrics are so pure. thank u kings of confidence. i gotta also talk about the outro to this song its so fucking beautiful. all the voices singing together is such a chef kiss mwah

Breaking Down: ive seen a lot of ppl (more than i expected?) cite this song as their fave day6 song and i mean valid. its day6’s harder rock side.. its reminds me a lot of how can i say and its very very good if thats your thing. also everytime mr k does the IM BREAKING DOWWN live its . very lovely thank you. its so so angsty i can feel the angst for miles with this one. when jae says “hearts never break the same” mkmfdnjgajk. yeah. this is one of the songs where u think its over but it ISNT!!!!!!! the guitar muting in the bridge fake outro whatever is so delicious i am a sucker for a good guitar muting rhythm technique can someone pls tell me what thats called im illiterate anyways it STARTS UP AGAIN the hecking guitar solo….. ladies and gentlemen…..

Stop the Rain: instrumental wise, this is a really really fun song… the scale up and down or whatever it is with synth + guitar in the verses and at the end of the chorus… very spicy indeed. i honestly think wonpil is the star of the show in this one bc its a really not aggressive but beat heavy?? song and wonpils softer voice really contrasts it nicely i think. i also love love LOVe the second verse with the minimal instrumental (of course i do) and then it goes into guitar solo mode.. i feel liek this album more than any other day6 album goes the hardest with the guitar solos thank you jae. also this song has wooaahs. guitar solo ✅, instrumental space ✅, woaaaahs ✅ but theres no guitar muting we’re almost there..

Say Hello: this song makes me smile. the punchy guitars, bubbly drums, wait actually the first time wonpil says “my girl” i teared up a little ouch…….. :((((((((((((((( so cute…. the bright lil woo ooooh ooohs in the chorus SO cute… its such a dreamy song and the lyrics are so nostalgic feeling its such a sweet song in general its abt like letting go but finding peace with it and wishing the other person well and its a really beautiful meaning. omg its like the opposite to hi hello njsdfdnkj theory?????

Everybody Rock: we are now in the ROCK zone everybody now . now COME ON keep it going now !!!!!!! 1 2 3 go!!!!! i absolutely adore the way the guitars fade out in the verses when the vocal lines start and its just a lil bass a lil drum. if theres one thing i love more than guitar muting its silence in music.. it really really makes songs great when theres some space left over i truly believe that. anyways this song has both thank u kings. jae’s prechorus with differnet members joining in is so nice as it gradually builds up more and more. extra important detail all the lives i can find of this they look like theyre having so much fun. also dowoon….. i truly believe i can be a rockstar bc of him. im in tears. the ending just lets it all sink in the extra 8 bars or whatever of extra instrumental very very nice addition thank you

I Just: i am truly sorry in advance for this im not gonna stop talking. musically,, this song is pretty simple (except for the guitar in the chorus, i’ll get there) but tonally, vibe-wise, on the feel good scale, this song is a 35 million absolutely fucking fantastic song. i love this song perhaps a little too much. i would like to speak briefly on jae’s guitar fill. if i could name my firstborn child after a sound byte it would be that one and you all know it very well. if i ever meet jae im gonna personally thank him for this and ask if i can get his guitar’s autograph. the fact the guitar gets louder in the last chorus with the vocals overtop of it too yum.. this song makes me miss a lover i nevr had or something but also feel like im falling in love and rolling down a grassy hill and staring into a sunset at the same time its like every single possible positive emotion for me. THE HEYYYY AHHHS . make me so inexplicably happy i love them with all my heart. ALSO you know how i said i love silence this song has it too!!!!!!!! with the faded guitar right before the last instrumental break !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also again not to be a young k stan but u know i need to plug the 18125 i just nagoya young k fancam its in my genetics i will not apologize. he looks so happy i love . i listen to this song on a daily basis and you cannot stop me from doing so. if i get cloned and u have to figure out which charlie is the real one see which ones heartbeat starts getting faster by hearing the guitar riff then youll know.

Nobody Knows: the beginning of this song is the true modern mona lisa. i could listen to the guitar and drum before any vocals hit forever i am not gonna lie. this really reminds me of old 5sos in a way and i really like it.. gives me a lot of nostalgia from being a 14 year old (no i’m not a 5sos stan but listen to their new album it’s really good). absolutely very fun but probably also really sad if the lyric “please i dont wanna cry” says anything … yep ok. i forgot how much i love the bridge of the song listening to it now its really different to the rest of it its so so nice. very very good. i dont listen to this one as much as some from the album but i still love it a lot,, theres something about it thats a little haunting in a good way its like that buzzfeed unsolved episode where the ghost named apple tater visits them.

Falling: this song gets you because you think its gonna be a full soft ballad but it still has a rock heavy influence! this album is a LOT of more hard or classic sounding rock and i really like the direction they took it in! can i please talk about the bass riff RIGHT before the end of the verse its those little extra bits that are added in that make a song so much better and thats prime example. I’m not the biggest fan of the chorus of this song for some reason i feel like theres a little bit of something missing but the haunting synth that kicks in and gets more prominent all the way through the song is very very nice and adds to the whole acoustic rock (somehow??? they have the Range) vibe.

If ~また逢えたら～: this song was their debut japanese song and she has a very special place in my heart. it reminds me of a very specific time in my life. also its a fun one bc i always try to guess whether its the instrumental or the original version when it comes on shuffle (i have both saved lol). i love love LOVe the guitar at the between vocal lines in the chorus its so fucking juicy… you know what else we have is rapper k which as u know i go crazy over.. the instrumental version is young ks rap karaoke version. very very good. i think this passage from my old review of this (if you know, you know) sums it up ladies: and i honestly think youngks rap part just brings the song back to day6′s style!! like i dont think many other bands would have brought it down to that u know??? and i love it…. the instrumental in this is also so crunch !! its so aggressive but like the type of aggressive that snowstorms are on a weekday… bc they basically just showed up without warning, rendered us immobile,, but all in all we’re PUMPED that it happened.

Baby, it’s okay: this song is not my favourite song of day6’s, i think it’s lacking in some oomph for my ears, HOWEVER !! and this is a big however I really love the bridge and the lyrics and that makes up for it. also the “i want you to be happy” and “ill always be here for you” is so adorable truly.

anyways we all know this day6 has no bad songs, unlock is no exception.
