So we lost David Lindley this week—one of the great, under-appreciated guitar players of the 1970s SoCal scene. He is probably best known for his stellar slide guitar on a lot of Jackson Browne hits, but I’ve always enjoyed his side project, El Rayo-X. This album, 1988’s “Very Greasy,” is nothing but a party band having a good time. No great statements, no aim to sell-out stadiums—just a good time. The title comes from their raucous cover of “Werewolves of London,” which is not only musically impressive but also funny as hell, too, as they add a lot to it. It’s probably heresy to say, but I prefer this version to Warren Zevon’s classic original. The album was produced by Linda Ronstadt (!), and she and Browne show up on harmony vocals in a few places. The whole thing was recorded by legendary engineer Ed Cherney, one of the most affable pros I’ve ever met, who died a few years ago. R.I.P. to them both.

Will Lee Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson
Head to head with the DNC, two news junkies didn’t walk into a bar but did get lost in conversation and fun. It’s easy when one of them is Grammy Winner, crazy talented, lovely, humble human, Will Lee.
It’s been a few years and a world of changes since last we spoke, this time focusing on the road to sobriety, many moons ago, what led there, the price of using, meeting Paul Schaffer, a relationship that changed his life, the two of them holding the distinction of being on Late Show With David Letterman from day one with The World’s Most Dangerous Band, until the final days with the CBS Orchestra, also giving Will the world’s record for the longest-running bassist on late-night television.  Will talked about the original band of 4, Hiram Bullock, Steve Jordan, how and why it morphed, some standout moments… Warren Zevon’s last show, Will’s MacArthur Park with Jimmy Webb… his hero, Ringo, making an appearance… Beatlemania, period. Where it all started for Will, The Ed Sullivan  Show, the Fab Four, all of whom Will would come to play with, even John in unique fashion. An incredible story about Paul, a Hofner, and a call from “P,” and how his Fab Faux came to be. Will’s account of how he conquered Revolution #9 and playing The White Album, heretofore never heard by Beatles sound engineer and producer, Geoff Emerick. Crazily, I was there that night- the story has a bittersweet postscript. We talked about Will’s new single, It’s All Too Much, and his new video, Hey Shorty, and how that came to be, why he’s off to Japan tomorrow and the fame he found there.
I’ve known Will for decades… with each that passes, I adore him more. He’s a rare success, who’s gotten to play with just about everyone, all of his heroes, night, after night, year after year, for 33 of them, and everyone it seems, without exception, loves and respects him. It’s a life well-lived filled with gratitude and appreciation, which makes it all the sweeter.
He closed with The Beatles, I Will…how damn fitting, Will!

86 - 1976/15: Warren Zevon
Tumblr media
The sleeve: I like the lights, I like the font. Pretty good for a basic-shot-of-the-artist one
Had I heard this before: no, not at all
I have listened to this one considerably more than the requisite three times, due to each of the first three listens changing my mind about it, and also because whenever I thought I'd write this one up I'd forgotten what my most recent opinion was. On this, my eighth or so listen (Spotify has started suggesting Zevon rereleases in my Release Radar and according to last.fm he is now one of my most-played artists of the year), I'm convinced this is actually a wonderful collection of songs that I'm going to need to own soon. Not only that, I'll have to follow up on the man's music that came after this album, of which I was only vaguely aware -- i.e. I was aware of the Hindu Love Gods, which he formed with 3/4 of R.E.M. at some point in the late 80s, and their cover of Prince's Raspberry Beret would occasionally play on MTV in the late hours.
This album starts with a silly outlaw country song, "Frank and Jesse James", that made me groan a little, though I have to admit it's also catchy. It's followed by equally catchy and increasingly endearing songs in a country rock / Cal-Mex / soft rock vein. They tell tales of many other types of criminals, deadbeats, and losers in a way that reminds me of one of my favourite albums of the early 90s, Freedy Johnston's The Trouble Tree. In terms of production, though, they are opposites: while the latter sounds raw, Zevon's is downright lush: it has that mid-70s immaculate, expensive sounding studio sheen with great dynamic range and all that. No wonder, as it's produced by Jackson Browne and has a star-studded lineup of studio musicians, including Buckingham/Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, several Eagles and the occasional Everly and Beach Boy. (Zevon had been hanging around their scene for a while, writing songs and playing piano for them, or simply sharing a flat with them.)
Very happy to have made this record's acquaintance, even if it took a while.

Almost Halloween, so time for RAH-HOOOO, WEREWOLVES OF LONDON My copy is a white label promo—I got it very early in my vinyl journey, and it was how I learned promo records existed. But the edges of the sleeve are shredded and the vinyl is VG- if we’re being generous, so honestly I’d upgrade given the chance. #warrenzevon #werewolvesoflondon #vinyl #vinyladay #lp #vinyloftheday #vinyligclub #vinyljunkie #vinylcommunity #vinylcollective #instavinyl #vinylgram #recordcollector #nowspinning https://www.instagram.com/p/CkRyWfLObIF/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Now spinning X 2: I reached out for an early family hookup on these RSD releases (thanks, Cuz!). The late, great Warren Zevon is a nominee for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this year, so please vote in the fan ballot! His songwriting with its literary bent and his great musicianship are overdue for recognition. #warrenzevon #zevon #rsd #recordstoreday2023 #nowspinning #vinyl #lp #turntable — view on Instagram https://ift.tt/aq8QIW4
