With regards to getting Kenny a Christmas gift!
My deliberately goofy answer: the world, a machine to play Fallen Order on, and a break from it all.
My semi-realistic answer, in the sense that I’m going to think about it like I’m buying gifts for a friend: Magic the Gathering booster packs and nice heavyweight long-sleeved t-shirts with ribbed cuffs and tearaway tags. Something comfycozy and something to fuel his hobbies! :D
Oooh great answers! I love both of em. Kenny could def use all of the goofy answers, esp the big break from what he has to go through. Or at least a break from his curse for a good while. Like maybe Death could give him a mini holiday vacation. XD Maan I forgot he also loves Magic the Gathering. I'm sure he would love the booster packs and the cozy new clothes. Some really good, thoughtful ideas! :D

Sheltered!Reader that gets lost and finds herself at Slasher!Konig's doorstep
He sees a pretty fucking girl in a pretty winter suit, her breath labored and coming out in short puffs of steam, her hands trembling and, oh, so obviously frozen - he knows the weather wasn't kind. Lately, the harsh winds and snowstorms even forced him to stop hunting for a little, supplying himself with a ride to the nearest town's shop and eager to sink his teeth in a new victim or at least some unlucky deer once the weather clears. But, oh, the victim had come wadddling to him. In a pretty parka, with a pretty expression, with your scarf bundled around your neck. It was too thin - not nearly enough to actually warm you up. It's fine though, he is enough of a heater. Can warm you from inside out, force his cock inside until you're nice and toasty. You ask him if you can enter the house, ask him for a phone, for something to warm you up. You're a trembling little thing, barely able to speak through your teeth chattering, and he can't find it in himself to drop you into the basement immediately. Oh no, he checks if the coast is clear first - reminds himself that the house is clean of all possible blood and guts - and then lets you in. Pats you on the back, assuring that it's fine - wordlessly, unnervingly silent even as he slowly unwraps you from the scarf and a bundle of your clothes, letting you dry your hair with a towel. He barely says a word as you snuggle to the fireplace, all of your desire to flee at the sight of a silent and giant man - mask off, since he was in his house - disappearing once you finally melted into the warmth of his house. Konig looks at you, toasty and warm, sitting on the floor like a housecat - so adorable and precious, he just can't help but touch you, feel the meat on your bones. Press a flat hand between your shoulder blades, smiling as you tried to swat him off, too warm and too tired to deal with this weird man. You didn't want to ask for help at first, but you got lost on the road - and you didn't want to freeze to death, either. And, by gods, his house is so, so precious - so cozy and warm and big and- Ah, but he has a little bit of a weird staring problem - he just...looks at you, not even blinking. You can't say you dislike him, he has somewhat of a handsome face - riddled with scars, of course, but you still found it nice to look at. And Konig found it quite nice to get lost in the fantasy about taking you right on the carpet, making you squirm and cry as you cum under him, completely unaware of the bodies buried in the snow not that far from here. God, you're so shy and so quiet, so, so adorable - you would make a perfect housewife once you're properly housebroken. He just hopes you'll be a strong enough girl to really survive this.

My dear lgbt+ kids,
When it comes to cold weather, the main rule (regardless of gender or presentation) is: when in doubt, choose warmth and safety over style.
Some basics:
Layering is your best friend: Start with moisture-wicking base layers to keep sweat off your skin. Follow with insulating layers (like fleece or wool), and finish with a weather-resistant outer layer (like a puffer jacket or waterproof coat) to protect against wind, snow or rain.
Keep your sensitive areas warm: Make sure your hands, feet, and head are covered! Gloves, warm socks and a beanie can prevent cold-related discomfort or injuries.
Waterproof: If you're facing snow or rain, make sure your clothes are waterproof. Wet clothes lose their insulating ability, so staying dry is a big part of staying warm!
Reflective Gear: If you’re out in the dark or in poor visibility conditions, consider adding reflective elements to your outfit for safety.
People can react differently to temperatures. A temperature that feels super cold to you could feel comfortable to someone else, depending on what you’re used to (and some other factors). As a very basic rule, we can say: Gloves, beanies, and other cold-weather accessories typically become necessary when temperatures drop below 40°F (4°C). In more severe cold (below 32°F (0°C)), it’s even more important to wear them to protect yourself from frostbite and maintain body warmth. But it goes even in milder weather: if you feel uncomfortable or if it’s windy or damp, it’s a good idea to add these items for extra comfort.
With all that being said: Clothes are not just for safety and temperature control, they also help you express yourself - and that doesn’t suddenly change in winter.
Dressing for cold weather doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your personal look. Whether you want to present more feminine, more masculine, or more androgynous, here are some tips to help you layer up and feel like yourself:
(Note that these are suggestions, not hard rules. Style is highly subjective as everyone has different tastes, preferences, body types, fashion inspirations, budgets, cultural influences etc. I could suggest something here that you’d feel super uncomfortable in - if so, that’s not a sign you’re “doing it wrong”! Cherry-pick what feels right and ignore the rest)
If You Want to Present More Feminine
Base Layers: If you want to wear skirts or dresses in winter, start with thermal leggings or tights! These can be nicely paired with cozy, long-sleeved tops or lightweight thermal shirts. (But also keep in mind that plenty of women, cis or trans, do not wear dresses all the time! Nothing wrong with choosing jeans!)
Outer Layers: There are plenty of styles to choose from that have a feminine touch, such as a belted trench coat, a pea coat, or a long wool coat. Shawls are also excellent for adding a touch of style while keeping you warm!
Footwear: Knee-high or thigh-high boots lined with faux fur or fleece can keep your legs warm and add a polished look to your outfit. Ankle boots with thicker socks are also a good alternative.
Accessories: Scarves, gloves, and beanies can be both practical and stylish. Knit hats or earmuffs can add a soft, cozy vibe to your look.
Style Tip: Go for a mix of fabrics like wool, faux fur, and knitwear to create texture and warmth.
If You Want to Present More Masculine:
- Base Layers: Start with thermal undershirts or moisture-wicking base layers. Consider long underwear for added insulation beneath your pants.
- Outer Layers: There’s plenty of outerwear to choose from, like a puffer jacket, parka, or wool overcoat! (Faux) Leather or bomber jackets layered over sweaters can also add a masculine edge while keeping you warm.
- Footwear: You might want to opt for sturdy boots, such as work boots, Chelsea boots, or combat boots. Thicker socks can keep your feet warm.
- Accessories: Don’t skip out on scarves, beanies, or gloves for being “too feminine”. They can actually be great for adding a more rugged feel to your outfit! You just gotta find a color and style that fits you well.
Style Tip: Focus on layering in a way that adds structure. Sweaters, button-ups, and jackets work great together for a sharp, put-together look. Play with dark, neutral tones and thick fabrics like wool or denim for extra warmth and style.
If You Want to Present Androgynous
- Base Layers: Neutral-colored thermal tops or turtlenecks can serve as great foundational pieces. You may want to pair these with straight-leg or loose-fitting pants that allow room for layering underneath.
- Outer Layers: Oversized coats, puffer jackets, or long trench coats can work well for an androgynous look. Try layering with oversized sweaters or fleece pullovers for extra warmth.
- Footwear: You could go for sneakers, lace-up boots, or loafers paired with warm, thick socks. But really, any pair of shoes can work for an unisex outfit.
- Accessories: Neutral-colored scarves, simple beanies, and fingerless gloves can add to an androgynous look. Minimalist accessories like oversized scarves or gender-neutral caps are both practical and stylish.
Style Tip: Aim for a balanced mix of structured and relaxed pieces. Try loose layers on top with more fitted pants, or vice versa, to create an effortless, warm, and non-gendered appearance.
With all my love,
Your Tumblr Dad

The Birthday Wish
I decided on Wednesday afternoon to write a fic for Billy's birthday (on the Friday). Just pretend it's still 29 March, okay?
Tumblr media
Gift for @spaceofentropy
You can find it on ao3
TW Neil Hargrove, child abuse
Steve drove up to the quarry, slowing right down when he noticed there was already a car there. A very familiar blue car.
“Fuck!” His evening was shit enough, having had to endure three hours of the Party as well as Jonathan and Nancy being all cozy on the couch at the Byers’ house for Will’s birthday, he didn’t fancy a confrontation with Billy Hargrove on top of that.
It was too late though, Hargrove would have noticed his car by now, for sure, and Steve knew he’d never hear the end of it if he turned tail now.
He parked alongside the Camaro and turned his engine off. He glanced to his left and did a double take when he noticed Hargrove was sitting on the hood of his car, a thin looking blanket on his lap. The guy was holding something but it was too dark, even with the nearly full moon, for Steve to see what it was.
Steve grabbed his parka from the backseat and put it on once he got out of his car.
“Am I dreaming or is that you, Harrington?” Hargrove asked as Steve did his zipper up.
It was cold as balls, barely above freezing. “Yeah, it’s me, don’t cream your pants,” he muttered under his breath, not expecting Hargrove to hear him but then he started laughing and Steve stared.
He couldn’t remember ever hearing Billy Hargrove laugh before. It was surprisingly heartwarming and Steve wished he could see his face properly. He stepped closer to the Camaro and peered at Billy. He had a can of beer between his thighs and was holding a cupcake.
Huh.
“You’re just in time, pretty boy,” Billy said, pulling his pack of cigarettes out of the pocket of his denim jacket, followed by his Zippo and a… birthday candle.
“In time for what?” Steve asked, confused as fuck. He didn’t even react to the pet name, he was kinda used to it. Truth be told, he hadn’t heard it for a while, since he wasn’t at school anymore, and he kinda missed it, not that he’d ever admit that to anyone.
“‘m turning eighteen in a few minutes,” Billy said around the cigarette between his lips. The flame of his lighter illuminated his face for a couple of seconds, long enough for Steve to see the black eye and the dried blood on his cheek.
“The fuck happened to you, Hargrove?”
Billy shrugged. “Neil didn’t take too kindly to Maxine reminding him it was my birthday. He expressed his displeasure before I dropped her off for her sleepover at the Byers’.”
“Excuse me, but what the fuck?”
“Don’t worry about it, princess. I’m just glad he gave me time to pack a bag before he kicked me out.”
“Kicked you out? On your birthday? Again, what the fuck?” Steve couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“Well, yanno, I’m eighteen now, legally an adult, so I have to fend for myself or some such,” Billy said, checking the time on his watch and pressing the sad looking candle into the frosting of his blue cupcake.
Steve watched him light the candle, his heart in his throat as he connected some dots. What kind of parent kicked their kid out the day they turned eighteen? What kind of monster beat up their kid because it was their birthday? Holy shit .
Billy made eye contact with Steve before he closed his eyes for a moment and blew out his birthday candle.
“What d’you wish for?”
Billy grinned before he removed the candle and put it back in his pocket. “Can’t tell you, Stevie, or it won’t come true.”
“Happy birthday, Billy.”
“Thanks.” Billy ripped the cupcake in two and offered one of the halves to Steve, who took it with a nod.
Steve looked at it then back at Billy.
“It’s not poisoned, in case you’re wondering,” Billy said before he moved off the center of the hood and patted the space beside him. “Come sit with me, I promise I won’t bite.”
Holding his half cupcake, Steve sat on the edge of the Camaro’s hood before sliding closer to Billy. The metal was still a bit warm and it made Steve feel something he didn’t care to analyze.
“What are you gonna do?” Steve asked as he took a bite. The frosting was really sweet, and the cupcake vanilla flavored.
Billy shrugged again. “Sleep in my car, I guess, shower at school, or something, I dunno. Neil didn’t find the money I’ve been saving but it’s not enough for a motel, not to last until graduation, anyway.”
“Billy, it’s way too cold to be sleeping in your car. You’ll freeze to death!”
“Cute that you think anyone will care, Harrington.” Billy laughed and this time, it made Steve shiver. Unlike before, there was no happiness in that laugh. “Not sure you’ve noticed but literally no one gives a fuck about me. No one at school. Certainly no one at the house on Cherry Lane.”
“Max cares,” Steve countered. You care , a voice in his mind added but he shushed it.
“She only cares because I’m her ride to places and it saves her having to walk everywhere. I have zero illusions about where I stand.” Billy balled up the paper case of his cupcake and threw it into the bushes.
“Surely—” Steve was sure Billy was wrong about Max.
“Nah, pretty boy. It’s fine. Don’t worry your pretty head about it. Just promise me, when they find me dead in a ditch, make up some good stories about me at my funeral, okay?” His empty beer can went the way of the cupcake case.
“That’s not funny.”
“Like I said, not your problem,” Billy said, an edge in his voice that Steve was wary of. “You should head home before your parents wonder what happened to you.”
Steve snorted. “My parents are somewhere in Europe, and they don’t give a fuck.”
“Aww Stevie, I’m sure that’s not true.”
“They showed up on Christmas Day and told me I had six months to sort myself out because they were putting the house on the market on July 1. I’m lucky my mom talked my dad out of cutting me off when I didn’t get into college.”
“Ouch.” Billy winced. “What are you gonna do?”
Steve shrugged. Working at Family Video was all well and good but it wasn’t really a long term plan. “Saving most of my shitty wages until I have to leave, then, I don’t know. Indy, maybe. Or Chicago, I guess.”
“You need to think bigger, princess. There’s a whole world out there. Where’s somewhere you’ve always wanted to go? What’s on your list?”
Steve took a moment to really think about it, watching his breath make little clouds of steam every time he exhaled. His ass was getting cold as well, sitting on the cooling metal. Billy’s blanket looked even thinner up close than it had earlier. It was time to move this party somewhere else.
“Hey, don’t feel like you have to say yes, or anything, but you wanna come back to my house? It’ll be warmer than here. I’ll even make us some food if you want.”
Billy didn’t punch his lights out or say no outright, so Steve counted that as a win. Billy gave him a confused look.
“Didn’t you have dinner at that weird kid’s birthday party? I saw your car there.”
“Yeah, well, sitting across from my ex and her new boyfriend kinda killed my appetite. I’m starving.”
“I didn’t realize you could cook, Stevie,” Billy said, taking one last drag of his cigarette before pressing the butt of it to the underside of his boot and dropping it in the dirt.
“My parents have been taking progressively longer trips ever since I was twelve, so I had to learn. There’s only so many frozen pizzas and boxed mac and cheese a guy can eat before he craves real food.”
***
Billy followed Steve to Loch Nora and parked his Camaro next to the bimmer in the Harringtons’ vast garage. He wasn’t too sure what was happening, but the promise of warmth, food and company definitely beat sleeping in his car at the quarry with the shitty blanket he’d sneaked out of Cherry Lane.
He left his boots by the door in the foyer and spent a moment taking in what he could see of his former teammate’s house. The Harringtons lived on the other end of the spectrum when it came to income bracket, no doubt about it. For starters, they had an upstairs and what looked like a formal lounge and, oh yeah, was that a freaking pool ?
“Billy?” Steve called out and Billy startled.
“Yeah?” he replied, wandering towards the voice and the light. The kitchen was bigger than his bedroom at Neil’s house, with a double oven and too many cupboards to count.
“Hey, there you are,” Steve looked up at him from the freezer. “You okay with gnocchi?”
“Um, I guess. Never had them.”
Steve smiled at him and Billy felt something warm unfurl in his chest. He was having trouble remembering why this crush he’d been harboring on Steve was a bad idea, what with the way Steve was finally giving the attention he’d been craving since the first day.
He sat on the bar stool by the breakfast bench and watched as Steve put a big pot of water on the stove. Steve kept telling Billy what he was doing as he was doing it, explaining it was a recipe he’d found in a cookbook his parents had brought back from one of their trips.
The butter and sage smelled delicious and Billy couldn’t wait to try this dish. He couldn’t remember the last time someone had taken the time to cook for him. Susan’s cooking skills were not the best and she cooked whatever Neil demanded anyway. One of the upsides of being kicked out was that Billy would never have to pretend to enjoy Susan’s bland, dry meatloaf.
Billy realized Steve was calling his name and he looked over at him. “Sorry, what did you say?”
“Dinner is ready. You wanna watch a movie while we eat?”
Billy nodded, at a loss to explain why Steve was being so nice to him. It wasn’t like they were friends. Yeah, sure, Billy had apologized after the fight that night back in November, but the few times he’d taken Max to the video store, he’d stayed in the car to avoid any awkwardness.
Now he’d shared his birthday cupcake with the guy and they were sitting down on his expensive looking couch to watch a movie, with a beer and delicious smelling food Steve had made for them. Almost made Billy forget about Neil whaling on him and kicking him out of the house.
He expected Steve to sit on the other end of the couch but he sat right next to Billy instead, his thigh warm against Billy’s. They ate in silence, and Billy did his best to pay attention to the plot of the movie Steve had picked but he was too distracted to care much. He hadn’t been this close to Steve since basketball practice and it was making his heart race.
Billy was trying not to read too much into the prolonged physical contact. He’d already been punched once tonight, he wasn’t looking for a repeat. Resisting the urge to put his hand on Steve’s thigh was getting harder and Billy wasn’t sure how much longer he would be able to control his body’s reaction. That was an embarrassing situation he could do without, not to mention extremely awkward.
He put his empty plate on the coffee table and stood up, asking Steve for directions to the bathroom before telling him he didn’t need to pause the movie. Billy then rushed out of the living room and locked the bathroom door behind him, resting against it for a minute. Fuck. Maybe he should leave, head over to the Motel 6 for the night and work out what to do tomorrow.
Once he was done in the bathroom, he headed for the kitchen and got a glass of water to give himself some time.
“You okay?” Steve asked from the doorway and Billy startled.
“Y-yeah, just, um, needed a drink.” He drained the last of his water and put the glass in the sink. “Look, Steve, it’s really late. I’ll… um, I’ll get out of your hair. Thanks for dinner but I better be going.”
“What? No.” Steve walked into the kitchen and stopped in front of Billy. “Why?”
Because if I stay I’ll probably get a boner and try to kiss you…
Billy ran a tired hand through his hair. “It’s just… it’s better this way.”
“Better for who?” Steve asked, not budging when Billy tried to move past him.
“Steve…”
“Listen, Billy, I’m sorry.”
“What?”
Steve’s hand made it halfway to Billy before he dropped it at his side and wasn’t that a mindfuck? “I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable by sitting so close to you on the couch. I just…”
“You just…?” Billy’s fingers twitched with the need to reach out to the boy in front of him. He could feel Steve’s eyes on him, a phantom touch that heated up his skin, so for once, he let himself look. Steve’s hair looked like he’d been raking his fingers through it, his brown eyes fixated on Billy, the moles dotting his cheek and his neck, the yellow jumper that looked so soft.
Billy didn’t let his gaze move below the belt, instead trailing back up to Steve’s mouth, his lips looking so fucking kissable. And so close. Huh? Before Billy could fully process that Steve had closed the gap between them, Steve leaned forward, cupping Billy’s face with both hands, and pressed their mouths together.
The contact was brief. Too soon, Steve pulled away, dropping his hands and taking a step back, eyes wide, like he suddenly realized the enormity of what he’d done. Billy grabbed him by the waist with both hands and pulled him close, capturing Steve’s lips and unleashing a year and a half of pent up yearning and pining.
Billy found himself pressed against the side of the fridge, Steve’s tongue in his mouth and Steve’s arms around his neck. The kiss went from soft and exploratory to frantic and thrilling. Billy couldn’t get enough. He could feel Steve getting hard against his belly and it was intoxicating.
They broke the kiss when breathing became an issue but didn’t move away from each other.
“Stay,” Steve whispered against his lips and Billy nodded.
Later, tangled with Steve in his bed, naked and sated, Billy told Steve in hushed whispers how he’d wanted to kiss him since the Halloween party at Tina’s. Steve told Billy of all the times he’d stamped down on the attraction he was feeling because he believed it would never go anywhere. Billy laughed when Steve said he’d thought Billy was straight, then told him about Neil.
Over breakfast the next morning, Billy told Steve he’d secretly applied to colleges in California, and Steve told him he’d never seen the ocean. They started making plans.
***
Billy stepped off the stage on Graduation Day and walked past his classmates and the rest of the crowd until he reached the parking lot. Steve and Max were leaning against the Camaro, chatting animatedly. Max ran to him when she spotted him and they hugged.
“I’m gonna miss you so much, Billy!” she cried when he let go of her.
“You can come visit, shithead,” he replied with a grin. Being with Steve had helped repair their relationship and Billy had had to admit that Steve was right and Max did care.
“You better write me when you get there.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah. I promised, didn’t I?”
They hugged one last time then Steve said his goodbyes and they got into the car.
Billy told Steve he could picked a tape and a lone birthday candle fell out of the glove box when Steve opened it.
“You never did tell me about your birthday wish, Billy,” Steve said, holding the candle up with two fingers.
Billy smiled as he pulled away from the lot. “I guess I can tell you now, since it came true.”
“Oh?”
“You were my wish, pretty boy.”

@lastdaysofwar, Day 21: Downtime/Jacket (Hermann Gottlieb/Newton Geiszler)
It isn’t unusual for various systems in the Shatterdome to break down. Their staff includes some of the most skilled technicians in the world, but their focus is necessarily on the jaegers and on LOCCENT systems, so when the air conditioning is on the fritz, it simply isn’t a priority.
If it had simply stopped blowing cool air, Hermann supposes, it wouldn’t be so bad. The lab would become uncomfortably warm, he and Newton would bring out their desk fans, Newton would whinge on a bit about the sweat interfering with his hair gel, but they would survive. But, as it happens, a failure somewhere down the line means the damn thing is going full blast, shooting icy cold air from the vent directly above Hermann’s chalkboards. There’s nowhere he can work on his equations that’s out of the line of fire, and he can’t be certain in this lighting but he thinks his fingers might be turning blue, so he’s been forced to retreat to the marginally less frigid territory of his desk, where he’s reduced to working with pencil and paper.
Even Newton, who is never cold, has wrapped himself in a blanket on the couch to watch some insipid action movie on his tablet. Never before has Hermann regretted a lack of samples for the biologist to study, but today he feels a stab of something uncomfortably like jealousy at the sight of his colleague, at loose ends, snuggled into what he childishly refers to as a “cozy burrito.”
“You should come watch this with me,” Newton calls, his eyes never leaving the screen. Hermann stiffens.
“I’m working. You may be familiar with the concept.”
“Working on what, man? When’s the last time you even got any new data?”
“I’m a mathematician, Newton. Not all of us have to wait around for fresh tissue samples before we can get anything done.”
“Whatever, nerd.” He finally looks over at Hermann, teasing smirk dropping into a frown. “You’re freezing,” he accuses.
“I’m fine.”
“Bullshit.” Newton pauses his movie. “I can’t even hear the explosions over your stupid chattering teeth. Why don’t you go get that big-ass parka and an ugly sweater?”
“It’s July.” A lightweight blazer is more than adequate for the weather outside.
“Buddy, it’s not July in here. I’m making coffee. You want some?”
“It’s the middle of the afternoon.”
“I’ll take that as a yes.” Newton wanders over to the coffee machine, and Hermann tries to get back to work. He has no time for Dr. Geiszler’s nonsense.
He’s having some difficulty focusing, but that’s no one’s business but his own. It’s simply a matter of willpower. Tuning out external distractions. He’s honed that ability over the years sharing his workspace with Newton, but today he can’t seem to make himself unaware of his colleague creeping up behind him.
Creeping with a distinct purpose, Hermann suspects, as he listens to the not at all quiet thump of Newton’s boot leather across the metal floor. The man thinks he’s so subtle. Hermann braces himself for whatever prank is about to befall him.
But whatever he’s expecting, it’s not for Newton’s leather jacket to suddenly drop down over his head.
“Newton?”
“You’re. Cold!” Newton insists, and runs away back to the coffee maker.
Hermann pulls the jacket away from his face and turns to glare at his colleague.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
“Making coffee,” Newton says.
“Why…” Hermann lets the jacket fall from his head to his shoulders, then reluctantly pulls it forward so that, while not exactly wearing it, he’s wrapped up inside. It is warmer this way. How embarrassing.
“You could always go up to the roof to warm up,” Newton suggests as he pours two cups of coffee.
“I told you, I’m working. And I do not need to warm up.”
He expects Newton to call his bluff and demand the jacket back, but the man just shakes his head and holds out one of the coffee cups until Hermann, with a sigh, comes over and takes it.
“Thank you, Newton,” he grumbles. The coffee is too hot to drink yet, but the steam wafting up into his face is quite pleasant.
“S’just a jacket,” Newton says.
“Thank you for the coffee.” They make each other coffee all the time, nothing noteworthy about it. It is not an unusually kind gesture from a man who usually has little to offer beyond relentless mockery. There is nothing confusing about a cup of coffee, and therefore Hermann will not be forced, for the sake of his own emotional stability, to pretend it hasn’t happened.
“How come you won’t put your arms in the sleeves?” Newton asks. “What’s the matter, afraid you’ll look too cool and ruin your reputation?”
Hermann takes a sip of coffee, then tries very hard not to let on that he’s burned his tongue.
“Hey, you know what’s even warmer than a jacket? My blanket,” Newton says, wriggling his shoulders within his cocoon.
“I know it’s warm. It’s my blanket,” Hermann snaps.
“Whatever, you left it lying around. Free real estate.” Newton gestures magnanimously toward the couch. “Come watch a movie with me and I’ll share it with you.”
“Mm…What movie? Who’s in it?”
“You know that guy who played Hellboy?”
“No.” Why on earth would he know who that is?
“Man, you don’t know anything good. There’s vampires,” Newton urges. “You like vampires, right?”
“No.” He does, a bit, but it doesn’t do to appear too eager.
“Come sit on the damn couch, Hermann.” Newton takes a gulp of coffee, and barely restrains himself from spitting it out. “Ah fuuuuuuuck it’s hot!”
“Yes, Newton. Hot coffee is hot.”
“Coffee indeed hot,” Newton says, as if that’s something significant.
“As you say,” Hermann agrees, because he loses nothing by it. Newton grins and punches Hermann’s shoulder, which seems to be a friendly gesture, so Hermann doesn’t retaliate.
“Come on, Hermann. Sit. Be warm. Watch the vampires explode. Enjoy your downtime for once.”
“I don’t have downtime,” Hermann protests.
“You have plenty of downtime. Sit with me. Watch. Exploding vampires, Hermann. Exploding vampires.“
“Very well, Newton, show me the exploding vampires.” It isn’t as if he can think straight under these conditions anyway.
They settle on the couch together with their coffee, the blanket spread over their laps and the tablet propped where they can both see it. Newton doesn’t ask for his jacket back, so Hermann keeps that on as well.
It’s really quite nice, having…downtime, Hermann decides, as he begins to relax and their shoulders come into contact, followed by elbows, and then Newton’s knee swings over to bump against his. Five minutes into the movie, they’re leaning against each other, temperature troubles forgotten, and, yes, it’s very nice indeed.
Dr. Geiszler may well be the first person who has ever encouraged Hermann to do anything other than work. He does not resent the demands being made on him, not with the fate of the world on the line, but it is not the worst thing in the world, being given an excuse to stop. He can’t allow himself to get used to this sort of thing, but just for a little while, he’ll enjoy his moment of peace.
Peace, and exploding vampires.

"Taking the Plunge" (Rated M)
On their first day in Vail, on the last-minute vacation of a lifetime, Blaine has come up with a surprise for his husband that's equal parts horrifying and confusing. (1461 words)
Read on AO3.
"Tell me why..."
"Ain't nothin' but a heartache..."
"Stop that," Kurt snaps.
"Oh, uh..." Blaine bites his lips together, stifling a giggle. But more importantly, stifling the next verse of the song. "Sorry."
Kurt breathes in, cold air shooting straight to his lungs and freezing them solid. 'This is it,' he thinks, shivering so hard his body vibrates, scooting him a foot to the left against his will. 'This is how I die. I become a human popsicle. Maybe they can preserve me, revive me in the future. God...' He glances up at the dreary sky, his view obscured by his bangs, holding their height remarkably well against the blistering breeze. 'I hope my hair keeps up.'
When they had arrived in Vail and checked in, Kurt immediately threw on his swimsuit at Blaine's request. Personally, he'd been excited to get the debauchery started! It had been too long since they'd taken a proper vacation. Yes, they live alone together and can have sex freely on every piece of furniture they own. But there was something about taking their carnal escapades to a different locale that got Kurt's blood pumping.
What can he say? He loves to travel.
After Kurt suited up, Blaine tossed him his parka and boots, then ushered his husband past the cozy lodge, with its heated mineral spring pools and five-star restaurant, to this foreboding body of black, ice-filled water. They'd stopped at the banks, joining a swimsuit-clad group already gathered and intent on jumping in. Kurt thought Blaine had dragged him there for a laugh - watch the tourists freeze their asses off before they themselves retreated to the soothing waters inside.
It horrified Kurt to no end that Blaine looked eager to take the plunge, too.
When they had planned this vacation together on their sofa in Manhattan, Blaine made no mention of participating in the Arctic Dip. But that must have been his plan all along.
Surprise!
Kurt didn't think he could find a place colder than Ohio in December.
Staring into the water in front of him, ice bobbing at the surface, he knows he's about to be proven wrong.
Everything from his nuts to his nose shrivels at the thought.
"Explain to me again," Kurt starts over, choosing his words carefully so as not to stumble upon the lyrics of another catchy boy-band earworm, "why we're about to do this."
Blaine claps his hands together, rubbing them hard to warm them, and beams ear to ear. "Because it's exhilarating!"
"Your definition of exhilarating and my definition of exhilarating are vastly different then." Kurt pulls his parka tighter around him, attempting to trap whatever heat he has left underneath. It pains him to do it, though. He is certain he has pulled most of the seams loose by now.
A group of older, less dressed gentlemen stroll by as if it's a sunny spring day and not 80 degrees below, laughing at their own jokes and nodding at Kurt and Blaine as they pass. Blaine politely adverts his eyes.
"At least we're wearing bathing suits," he kids.
"Speedos. Which you had me pack under false pretenses."
"No! No false pretenses!" Blaine pleads, hoping his plans haven't lost him access to his husband in a Speedo for the rest of their trip. "They're for the jacuzzi in our suite. I swear."
"Which we haven't even seen yet! You dragged us straight here!"
"We want to take the plunge with everyone else! Before the ice melts!"
"Do we, though?" Kurt whines.
"Yes! This is the highlight of this resort! That's why I chose it! I've been looking forward to this!"
Kurt scowls. "O-kay. If you want to do this, fine. But why can't I wait on the sidelines with a sherry and a smile?"
"Because it's a bucket list item. And we do bucket list stuff together."
"But it's on your bucket list. Not mine. Nowhere on my bucket list does it say freeze my balls off!"
"I was hoping you'd do this with me as a favor? Be supportive of my eccentricities?"
Kurt tilts his head at Blaine, carefully examining his suddenly sullen spouse. "Why do you sound embarrassed about that?"
"Because it's..." Blaine chews his lower lip, trying to avoid the inevitable reveal. But he can't. He can't put this confession off any longer. "It's a... mid-life... bucket list item."
Kurt turns fully towards his husband, eyebrow arcing sharply. "You have your bucket list divided into age groups?"
"More like milestones."
"And you can't just dye your hair blond and buy a Ferrari like everyone else?"
"You mean like my dad? And my brother? Who got it into their heads that married life was holding them back, so they messed up the best things that ever happened to them?"
"I... guess," Kurt says, softening even though every outward inch of him has become rock solid.
"Yeah, well at least they waited a few decades, right? As opposed to me, who started in high school." Blaine chuckles bitterly. "Coop always said I was an overachiever."
Kurt sighs, releasing his death grip on his cramping elbows, and takes his husband's hands. "Honey, where is this coming from?"
"I don't know," Blaine murmurs. It's a knee-jerk answer but it's also a lie. He does know. They both do. Or, at least, Kurt can guess. It was either the invitation they received to Cooper's second wedding to his second wife, taking place in June (only a month after his second divorce from wife number one finalizes... the wife Blaine loves and adores like a sister) or the heads-up from Blaine's mom that his dad, who came back a year ago to joy and revelry all around, is eloping with his secretary.
His 20-year-old secretary.
Blaine's mom broke the news to Blaine over the phone at three in the morning, hysterically crying and sloppy drunk.
But it could also be the out-of-the-blue Facebook friend request Blaine got from Eli, their favorite lighthouse. Blaine had blocked the man on everything he could think of, so to see his name and picture pop up (real picture this time) had thrown Blaine for a loop.
He almost deleted his account.
Either way, that was a ton of emotional baggage for Blaine to deal with all at once. It's ninety percent of the reason why they packed their bags last minute and ran off to Vail. Blaine couldn't face spending the holidays with his family this year.
He wouldn't even know whose house to go to.
Kurt was fine with it. His family had headed off on another Country Music Christmas Cruise. Sure he missed his dad, his stepmother, and his stepbrother.
But Kurt had never declined an invitation so fast.
He had nothing against country music. He did have an issue with being trapped in the middle of the ocean with twenty-five Bluegrass bands and nothing to eat but BBQ for two weeks. Kurt and his father were going to have to have a serious conversation about his cholesterol when the man came back to terra firma.
Blaine shivers for the first time since they've been out here, and Kurt wonders if he's finally feeling the bite in the wind, or if it's from something else.
Something frozen deep inside, so cold that ice water is actually warm enough to melt it.
Kurt looks down at the still water, abyssal black and straight out of a horror flick, then back at his husband, eyes downcast to the snow, lips turning a subtle shade of blue. Kurt knows Blaine is rethinking this decision, and normally Kurt would encourage that. But this time doing what Blaine wants, what he needs, is more important than Kurt's comfort.
And possibly his health.
"Okay, okay. I'll do this with you," Kurt says, abandoning the escape plan he had been brewing in his brain - the one where he takes a step back as his husband leaps forward and books it for the lodge - and embraces the numbing cold. "Because you're my husband, and I love you."
Blaine peeks up at his husband and smiles, a small ray of sunshine in this oppressive chill. "Thank you, Kurt." He considers adding, 'You won't regret this,' after, but he has to be real.
Kurt regrets it already.
"But whatever happens," Kurt says, unzipping his jacket quickly like ripping off a bandaid, "you are responsible for warming me up, whatever that entails, and for however long it takes. Deal?"
Blaine's shy, apologetic smile transforms.
It becomes wolfish.
Through chattering teeth and hard-pinched lips, Kurt's flirtatious tone managed to squeeze its way back into his voice.
Perhaps Blaine hasn't lost access to his husband in a Speedo after all.
Now he has to work to keep it that way.
"Deal."

necklace of stars, waiting for you by the carousel
Tumblr media
PAIRING eunseok x reader
SYNOPSIS eunseok remembers all of his past lives. when he finally found his lover, he was unfortunately robbed of their time together. eunseok then continues to live multiple more lives, always in search of his lover, hoping they’ll meet again in another life.
GENRE reincarnation au, soulmate au, angst, fluff
WARNINGS death, a male being reincarnated into a female; do not read if uncomfortable with these topics !
AUTHOR’S NOTE i recently rewatched eunseok’s smrookies vlog where he went to everland and it reminded me of see you in my 19th life, so i decided to write this cause he was just too cute 🫶🏼 it’s also my first time writing something other than an essay for school work, so feedback is greatly appreciated. hope you enjoy this 🧡
WORD COUNT 1.7k
Tumblr media
“won’t you ride the carousel with me ?”
“i want to go to the horror maze though.”
eunseok had lived many different lives. one after another. the years and lives he has lived seemed to blur together, until he met you. he had always been content with living alone, in isolation. he knew that all the relationships that he painstakingly built would inevitably disappear, like snowflakes melting on a warm palm. he knew that better than anyone else after the overwhelming heartbreaks he went through in his first few lives, which led him to be unfeeling and indifferent.
eunseok clearly remembers the exact moment in which his whole life started to change – the very moment in which your large doe eyes met his and a “sorry” slipped out of your mouth as you rushed to pick up the books you caused him to drop, a flush evident on your face. it was then that he started to allow himself to feel again, just for you.
“but that’s so scary ! let’s ride the carousel instead, please ? it’s our anniversary after all.”
“i’ll think about it.”
“eunseok !”
eunseok smiled softly at your pleas, wide eyes looking up at him. his heart fluttered with the delicate grace of snowflakes, on the brink of a winter wonderland of happiness.
“i’ll follow you wherever you go.”
he reached into his pocket and pulled out something.
“what’s that ?”
“for you.”
it was a pretty silver necklace with a star charm hanging off it. with both his and your initials engraved on each side of the charm. you turned around and let him clasp the necklace around you. it was so pretty to you.
idle chatter and music from the playlist eunseok made for you filled the confines of the car. your animated gestures when you talk, your sparkling eyes when the streetlights reflect on them, your adorable giggles when he makes a dad joke and your endless fidgeting in anticipation of your anniversary together. you in your slightly oversized pink parka, seated next to him in the warm and cozy car. eunseok feels as if all the empty crevices in his heart were overfilled with you and you alone. perhaps amidst the frost-kissed chapters of his life, there will be enchanting moments waiting to unfold.
a car’s honk.
“eunseok ! careful !”
the roads, slick with a layer of frozen precipitation, caused tires to screech and cars to veer out of control. amongst winter’s serene beauty, an ear-piercing symphony of metal crushing and glass shattering. swirling snowflakes, momentarily suspended in the aftermath.
eunseok regained consciousness to come face to face with his lover, bloodied and bruised. your pink parka stained red.
“no.”
he reached over his cut-up and trembling hand to cradle your head as he desperately searched for any sign of life.
“no please.”
eunseok’s heartbeat echoed painfully in his ears. why ? why in this life ? why is fate so unfair to me ?
“i’ll follow you wherever you go, my love.”
he cradled your unresponsive body close to his as he slowly felt himself losing consciousness.
sirens filled the neighbourhood as onlookers whispered amongst themselves. the stark contrast of the pure white snow against the pool of blood and pile of wreckage painted a macabre image. you and eunseok, close together in winter’s unforgiving embrace.
as the paramedics tried to pull the two limp bodies apart, they found out that they couldn’t as their silver necklaces were entangled together.
my first life without you
fate was unkind to eunseok in this life too. in this life, his name is jack somer, born in australia. because he was born into a poor family, eunseok worked really hard. he worked hard to earn enough to sustain himself and his family, consisting of his mother and brother from this life. he worked hard in hopes of seeing you once again. however, he was largely preoccupied with earning money for his family, so he could not put aside much time to look for you.
on very rare occasions, eunseok would manage to save up enough money to enter the local carnival. he would then spend his day sitting on the bench in front of the carousel, watching as people walked by. watching couples happily chatting with each other while holding each other’s hands. just like what you and him would have done if you both made it to the theme park that day. watching young children run around, causing their parents to freak out over them. just like the family you and he dreamed of having one day. watching people being together. just like you and him once were. but he never found you. or perhaps you were not reincarnated in this lifetime.
my second life without you
in this life, eunseok is well-known by many as marcelle beaumont, a famous french designer who established her career in fashion design through her winter collection. during the winter, you could see many citizens wearing pink parkas from her brand, the most popular item in her collection that was extremely well-received by the public. she wondered why the red parka wasn’t popular.
due to the successful launch of the clothing line, eunseok had plenty of connections to the rich and powerful in society. he utilised those connections to the fullest, but yet he still could not find any trace of you. or perhaps you were not reincarnated in this lifetime.
my fifth life without you
song kang. one of the top south korean actors. popular for his melodramas. you always loved to watch melodramas with him. and he would always pull you into his warm embrace afterwards to comfort you when you were upset about the expected tragic ending of the drama. this was eunseok’s fifth life without you already. and he was feeling increasingly anxious and uneasy without you by his side. it didn’t take much for him to act sad in dramas. after all, all he had to do was recall the accident and tears would start flowing endlessly.
as eunseok faced the large crowd, flash blinding his eyes, all he could do was put up a forced grimace. at every drama screening, his eyes would dart around, a tinge of hope as he scanned across every face in the crowd. as always, the knot in his stomach would tighten with every unmet gaze and he allowed defeat to seep into him once again. he later accepted that he would not find you in this life. or perhaps you were not reincarnated in this lifetime.
my eighth life without you
kazuha nakamoto was his name in this life. eunseok was a famous female japanese musician. he briefly wondered : had he been a famous japanese musician before ? but his memories of his past lives were foggy. it seems like he could not clearly recall anything that happened before he met you.
“memories” is yet another timeless song that eunseok would leave behind in this world. talking about his happy memories with you. in his life with you, you really loved a japanese group called akb48. maybe he could let you listen to “memories” when you both meet again. a song made just for you, eunseok thinks you’d really like that. he did not meet you in this lifetime either. how many years have passed ? he was getting tired. but it’s alright, because he’ll follow you wherever you are.
my tenth life without you
“it’s almost been a thousand years.”
eunseok sat on a bench, facing the front of the carousel. he was dressed to the nines in his sharp and sleek suit tailored just for him, with an expensive silver watch adorning his wrists and a silver star necklace hidden underneath his crisp white blouse. a pink parka laid on his lap, in case he got cold. in this life, he was reborn as song eunseok once again. this time, he is the son of a ceo in south korea.
“where are you ? i’ve been trying to find you yet there’s not a single trace of you for me to follow.”
eunseok continued to sit at the bench for hours, staring at the spinning carousel and trying to block out the laughter from all around him. he felt hollow. the heart-wrenching feeling he had experienced every day since he got separated from you was slowly fading, replaced instead by emptiness. it was as if he returned to his past self, the cold and emotionless person he was before he met you.
soon it was almost 8pm, and eunseok stood up from his seat, ready to leave. he bumped into someone of a rather short stature, carrying a telescope stand that seemed too heavy for them.
“hi sir ! are you leaving already ? there’s a special stargazing event tonight hosted by the celestial horizon society ! i’m part of it. would you like to join us ?”
“no, it’s alright. thank you for the offer,” eunseok muttered an excuse, wanting to get home and rest already. he was exhausted with the paperwork that his father piled on him and his driver was waiting for him.
“but the event is only for today; it would be a shame if you missed it ! stars are really pretty, you know. i can tell you must like them too; you even have a star necklace ! it suits you very well, by the way.”
eunseok hadn’t even noticed that his necklace had accidentally slipped out of his blouse, being too engrossed in his thoughts beforehand. he gently slid his thumb over the necklace, feeling the engravings of your initials.
“okay.”
“great ! i’ll lead you there, sir ! my name is y/n, sorry i forgot to introduce myself,” you tilted your head so that the telescope stand wasn’t hiding your face anymore.
as eunseok’s eyes lay on the sight of your face, the frosty air seemed to tighten around his chest, creating an icy embrace that left him breathless.
“you. i finally found you.”
“sorry sir, have we perhaps met before ?” a confused expression overcoming your soft features.
“no. we have not. but i would like to get to know you. i’m song eunseok, nice to meet you, y/n. before we go stargazing, would you like to ride the carousel with me ?”

Frozen
Callen kicked open the door, carting an armload of firewood with him. “I think there’s enough to get us through the night and morning tomorrow,” he said, shaking snow off of his buzzed hair. “Did you get in touch with the power company?”
“Yeah, the area is experiencing widespread outages and they’re getting to the problem as quickly as possible,” Deeks answered. He sat to the side of a blazing fire, mixing the content of a small pot hung from an improvised hook Sam had rigged up.
“We’ll just have to wait it out,” Sam decided.
For the last four days, they’d been chasing a pair of hackers who had fled LA while out on bond. The team had tracked them across multiple states before ultimately landing in small town in Indiana yesterday.
The sole hotel in town didn’t have vacancies due to several pipes bursting from cold weather, so they’d found a house for rent and managed to convince the owner to let them rent it for a few days. It left a lot to be desired, but at least it offered protection from the dropping temperatures and growing snowfall.
At least until the power went out unexpectedly, plunging the house into complete darkness. As they scrambled to get out flashlights, the temperature had fallen with alarming speed. Fortunately, the place had a functioning fireplace, but it only generated enough heat to keep the main room above freezing, and the wood supply was quickly dwindling.
Deeks handed out bowls of disappointing canned chicken soup and they ate in silence.
“Of course the one time we come to Indiana, there has to be a blizzard,” Kensi complained a few minutes later. She blew on her hands and then rubbed them in front of the fire. Like the rest of them, she wore a parka, stocking cap, and scarf. Callen and Sam stood on the opposite side, trying to remain stoic, yet clearly feeling the effect of the cold if their fidgeting was any indicator.
“To be fair, it is January and I’m pretty sure this is normal for most of the Midwest,” Deeks pointed out.
“Thanks, babe.” Glaring at him, she raised her shoulders to her ears, visibly shuddering.
“I’m sorry. You want to snuggle?”
Wedging herself next to him on the ledge in front of the fireplace, Kensi leaned into his side.
“This would be a lot more fun if we were at Mammoth,” she muttered.
“You even think of doing anything you two get up to there, I’ll kick your butts outside,” Sam threatened. He’d started pacing the length of the room after they ate, his irritation growing with every pass.
“Fortunately for you, it’s a bit chilly for that kind of activity to be enjoyable,” Deeks said. “Thought it might warm us up.” So would a cup of boiling hot coffee or an extra pair of socks.
“Warmth sounds nice.” Kensi pressed her cold nose into his neck and Deeks winced.
“You gotta keep moving. Keep the blood flowing.”
“Is this an inappropriate moment for a “that’s what she said” joke?” Deeks wondered.
“You know, we’re gonna need to sleep at some point,” Callen pointed out. Of all of them he seemed the least affected by the cold. “We’ll probably need to huddle up to stay warm.”
“Ooh, sounds cozy. And slightly scandalous.”
“Deeks, I am not snuggling with you,” Sam growled between chattering teeth.
“Aw, that’s hurtful,” Deeks gasped, his breath fogging out in an icy blast. “And here—here I was gonna let you be the big spoon.”
“More like serving spoon,” Callen added under his breath.
“Deeks is really good at snuggling,” Kensi chimed in.
“If I could, I would leave you all right here.” Sam’s usual glare lacked some of his usual weight and Deeks grinned back at him, enjoying the distraction from his cold and stiff fingers.
“A hollow threat given it’s below ten degrees outside. Without the windchill.”
“We’ll be fine,” Sam insisted.
***
An Hour Later
“See, this isn’t so bad,” Deeks said, cradling Kensi against his chest. Callen lay next to her, and at the very end, by his choice, lay Sam. They’d pulled out as many blankets and quilts as they could find and piled them on the floor in front of the fire.
Now under a thick layer of blankets and curled around Kensi, he felt a little warmer.
“Mm, you make a very nice space heater,” she said, already sounding a little sleepy.
“Speak for yourself,” Sam grumbled.
“Oh come on Sam, from now on this will be known as the great OSP Slumber Party.”
“We’re never speaking of this to anyone. Ever,” Sam disagreed.
“Of course.” Kensi nodded. “Except for Eric and Nell.”
“And Granger,” Callen added.
“I’m starting to think I’d be better off outside.”

Winter is Coming
The first snow has dusted the nearby peaks with news that a little further east there is snow and slush along the North Cascades Highway. The road will close soon as the expected winter snows arrive and won't reopen until sometime in the spring.
I am reminded of Shawn Forry and Justin Lichter's story "Cold Going" found in 'Crossing Paths A Pacific Crest Trailside Reader". The story describes a southbound (SOBO) PCT journey from Canada to Mexico in 2014-15. Their story is a powerful one. It speaks of stamina, determination, and excellent backcountry skills.

Wherever you live, the call of the trail may be heard even now as fall is falling and winter is soon approaching. I enjoy the white quiet of the woods near my house when we get an occasional lowland snowstorm. I also like to take my skis and swoosh around a little in the nearby Cascades. Venturing into the mountains is usually something I do on the short term. I go out for a day or part of one. To be honest, my feet and hands don't much like the cold for extended periods. I have learned that getting caught in frosty and snowy conditions even in non-official winter times on the PCT. When my body talks, I try to listen.
If you do answer the call and venture out for a cold weather excursion here are some things to keep in mind:
Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
Check the weather and trail conditions before heading out. If you are going into National/State forests or National/State Parks the respective ranger station will have critical information in many cases.
Bring a map and/or some form of navigation...think the Ten Essentials.
Bring extra water and food (see above).
Wear appropriate footwear clothing, such as rain gear. Bring extra layers.
Stay on marked official trails.
Plan carefully for winter weather. Conditions can change quickly and the sun sets early.
If for some reason you get lost, the U.S. Forest Service recommends the following:
Keep calm. Trust your map and compass. Shelter and warmth are more important than food. Backtrack if possible. If traveling with others, stay together, if possible. If not, send at least two people for help (depending on the size of your group.)
To find your position, climb to a place where you can get a better idea of where you are. When you reach a road , trail or telephone line, follow it. As a last resort, follow a stream downhill.
Before darkness falls select a sheltered spot and plan to stay there all night.
Don't abandon skis. Build a fire and shelter. Stay warm by getting out of the wind; insulate yourself with a parka and other clothing (use an insulated, branches or skis between you and the snow).
If you are injured and alone, keep calm. Stay where you are, clear an area down to mineral soil and build a signal fire. Green boughs will create heavy smoke.
Three signals of any kind, either audible or visible, is the universal SOS call. This is where a whistle flashlight/headlamp, or mirror can come in handy.
Going out in the winter is a serious endeavor. Informing other and going prepared are essential keys for having a successful experience. There are other winter stories to be found in "Crossing Paths" that put the above tips into some kind of context. We have also posted stories here that reflect on cold weather and snowy travel that are easily accessed. Whether or not you leave the cozy confines of home or brave the weather consider your skills and equipment. Finally, please don't rely on your cell phone. What works well at home may not work at all in the backcountry.
