Does your OC have a color strongly associated with them? (ie Alphinaud blue, G'raha red etc etc). If so, how did that come about? Was that a conscious decision in their character development? Are they aware of their color association?

Sib has a lot of bright bold pinks and purples, along with the more pastel shades of colors. This was a bit of a conscious/unconscious thing on my part. I solidified the general intensity but she picked the palette. She's more aware of the colors that look good on her and its also in part to her mother favoring the pastel pinks, purples, and teals/blues when she was younger. Color and intensity is such a vital part of her identity that it does bleed into her wardrobe choice throughout the story.

Demos is very earthy and this was more on my end since he has the forest and earth association as part of his aesthetic, he also happened to look very good in green and varying shades of it. Like He has to have green in his outfits somewhere or else it just doesn't feel like him, I also feel its his way of kind of standing out among the fashion of the realm that relies on the tans, browns, and red based colors, but still also blends into his surroundings. just a lot going on there.

Anthea is no surprise teal and peacock sapphire (which is teal in itself) and that fit the vibe that I was going with when I spent weeks just thinking on a nebulous idea of an oc that would work well with Hyth. I wanted them to have the darker palette since he was so light but also be so contrasting to their eye color so it would be a bit of surprise when he finally saw their eyes the first time. Teal as a color when looking it up for its meaning is meant more for calm and described as a shy color which fits Thea very well!

Deimos is someone that I associate with the colors of sunset, those yellows and orange, but maintaining that black color palette with his clothing while Phobos stands out a bit more having the browns. Which even beyond the societal conventions Deimos still chooses to wear darker colors and I can't really see him wearing anything else color wise that's not an accent. I would have to associate this with the fact that Deimos doesn't know who he is really and how much he wants to stand out so he's wearing it in a way that more signifies the mixing of all the colors, yet his personality is so vibrant you would forget that he's not wearing any other colors.

Iris has a more nude and pastel pink kind of vibe to her. She very much fits into this romantic academia aesthetic. This was not only a feeling but also as a way to juxtapose her looks being darker than Hades, but her clothing would ideally be lighter than I could ever see that man wearing in a modern setting. These are also colors that one could get away with most often in business like settings.

Stasia has a chrome white with silver and red accents association due to partially her vampire aspect in her original universe but its also a kind of way to show change and there being something new with her, along with a sense of perfectionism of the white. Stasia has many identities in her lifetime and has a need to control everything around her. It is also the color of her magic in her og verse and would ideally be the same in ff if there wasn't such a nature aspect to the way spells work, but in my head know that its chrome white when possible!

Conner has a more pastel blue, lavender, and sea foam green palette to him. Its much more subdued and reflects that of a foggy lush forest. He also does wear neutrals paired if possible lighter colored shirts in his og verse and the same would be said if he could in Ancient society. Conner very much is someone that likes to have fun and be a part of the world but he's got this guardedness to him that has him keeping it under wraps best as possible to not draw attention to himself.

Carly is gold with cream/white colors. She very much has this kind of early insta influencer aesthetic in her og verse that was meant to show off power and competence. Carly is bold and fiery like the sun but she's anything but a good character. She brings a very Shadowbringers vibes to the table in that light isn't always a good thing and can be destructive. It also just happened to go well with Zenos' color scheme and shows a solidarity and uniqueness with Stasia.

14 with Avery, 16 Damien, and 18 Phobos?

Oh, this got really long actually.

What thing did your OC’s parents do that your OC wishes they had a better explanation for?

Avery is also a tad bit insecure about how he’s not as smart or as gifted as his mother (not that he’s dumb, he’s just not a prodigy like she was). Neither of them know why this is, and the most reassuring explanation is that 'he's just a different person’, which to Avery, sounds a bit stupid.

(Captain Luna knows the real reason, and it’s exactly that. The gods blessed Avery with his own personhood when Minerva decided to be his mother. 'It’s not that deep', they said.)

On the more mundane side of things, Avery wishes he could fully understand why Minerva decided to stay on Perpetua after he was born.

Minerva doesn’t keep many secrets from him and is generally quite good at explaining things (it’s not a ‘because I said so’ kind of household). Her intentions of raising Avery in a safe environment where he can be happy are very clear to him. He knows that she grew up with high expectations as a child prodigy and doesn’t push him to be ‘special’ because she doesn’t want to impose that pressure on him. He’s cognisant of all that, and deeply loves his mother.

However, Avery sometimes longs to go to a ‘normal’ school and be a ‘normal’ kid in a ‘normal’ city. Being so young and raised in something of a ‘bubble’, he doesn’t quite understand the weight of the circumstances which led his mother to deciding to stay (conflict with parents, social pressures and stigma, the weight of being a mother in your late teens, among other things).

Even if it makes sense to him on paper, he doesn’t quite understand it on a deeper level, if that makes sense.

How strong or weak is your OC’s impulse control? What’s the worst thing that happened because of their impulsivity or inability to be so?

He’s typically not very impulsive by nature- he thinks so much about things and his mind runs so fast that it’s rare for him to actually decide on doing something without having an idea of the potential consequences. Usually his brain stops him from doing impulsive things by just as quickly coming up with a reason why he shouldn’t do said thing.

However he is reactive, whether he outwardly expresses it or not. If you put him under enough pressure (not difficult to achieve), he’s much more likely to panic and act without really cognitively deciding to (closer to classic impulsivity). Sometimes this manifests in him just saying whatever he’s thinking in a very ‘stream of consciousness’ manner (too many thoughts, remove filter and verbal dump to reduce thoughts). Other times, especially when he’s supposed to be playing the villain, it’s more of a reckless and destructive use of magic.

Right now, the biggest thing I can currently attribute his impulsiveness and volatility is the entirety of Chapter 10, where he accepts talking to Captain Luna almost immediately (he’s skeptical but goes through with it despite that- ultimately taking the first chance to get out of fighting Captain Luna using Augustin as an emotional weapon). However he’s almost just as quick to declare war once he thinks Captain Luna tried to kill him. Damien effectively locks himself out of any chance of peace or easy freedom from here, and he will come to regret this immensely.

We’ll see how he turns out in future arcs as he grows up, but personally I can see him burning stuff in the woods and starting a complicated painting projects on a whim at 2 in the morning. Perpetua will change him.

(as an aside: Damien is a weird character to write because he has Evil Xisuma’s story, but a much more ‘Hamlet’ personality. Or at least as much 'Hamlet' you can be when you’re 13 with horrible anxiety, which is a fair bit, actually.)

18. What’s the trashiest item in your OC’s wardrobe, when was the last time they wore it and why do they still have it?

This was actually a really hard question because Phobos, as he currently exists in my mind, is very much the type of person who would enjoy deeply ironic and absurd items of clothing. He has the ‘Born to Die / World is a Fuck’ shirt. He has the NGE Garfield shirt. He has an awful polyester ahegao style hoodie but instead of an anime girl it’s just a repeating print of a minion from Despicable Me.

(I don’t care if those shouldn’t exist in a sci-fi fantasy that doesn’t take place in our time or world, they exist.)

Despite this, there is one shirt that he actively avoids wearing.

And it’s this.

There’s so much going on here. The snide arrogance. The slightly off-trend graphic design. The implication that this was originally made as something cute that a normie parent would buy for their ‘insufferable genius’ gamer preteen child for their birthday. It is unlikely that whoever designed this did so with buff, 5'11 demonic twenty-somethings in mind, but here it is.

Riza got it for him one year for his birthday because she knows he loves horrible graphic tees. So naturally she got him the most painfulltly unfunny shirt she could find.

Phobos hates it. He hasn’t even worn it. It just sits in the depths of his closet, largely forgotten about.

He secretly hopes Riza will forget and that Damien will grow enough to fit into it, but he knows neither of those things will happen.

I remember trying to figure out why Caleb’s behavior suddenly shifted to something so aggressive in the comics, and that’s when the idea of an imposter taking his place was born! It’s amazing how these characters evolve like that, and looking back, Diego has come such a long way since he was first created. And of course, your writing added so much depth to him too! 😊

Yeah! In a way character design is visual storytelling as well! setting the tone for a character before they even speak. I'm glad you think so! Yes It’s all about using the design to drop hints about their personality and behavior. Oh gosh an agile chameleon slipping through the cracks that's a perfect description for him hahaha

Yes even in his more posh attitude Diego has that slightly more regal elf vibe hahaha that means a lot 🥰 I try my best to show it so it makes me really happy that you can pick up such details! Yeah! Phobos being a sorcerer who uses his magic more than physical combat (even though he has skill with weapons and battle too) means he tends to stay above the fray and let others do the "dirty work" which he sees as beneath him😆 His extravagant, dramatic wardrobe reflects that and highlights his royal status and his personality.

But yes in Diego's case it's different and his clothes even if more elegant are still made to fight, run and hide, while still contrasting nicely with the other characters like Caleb! For real Caleb likes to look good and take care of himself but without many adornments! That’s why he’d stand out so much in a fancy gala outfit! 😂

True enough, clichés don't need to be something negative indeed. That was definitely my main idea with him, which is quite ironic that he stands out with his hair and clothes despite his shy nature! But it ties in perfectly with his talent for acting. Oh true in a way Diego's red hair was a literal red flag for danger especially in the beginning of the story!😆

No doubt his feeling were probably his very worst enemies, at least until he learned to accept them and be at peace... they really lead him to awful pain and madness unfortunately. I was just so fixated on that color 😆❤️❤️

Yes plus there's a lot of color harmonies! Oh yeah with one prominent color it would be a monochromatic scheme, It’s a bold choice because while it can create a very cohesive look, it can also risk making the character feel less dynamic (depending on the context and story of course) I really admire when they can pull it off successfully!

Maybe Diego in very intense colors could be great for special occasions in the story, like an important celebration and such! But yes I always felt greens and warm earthly tones suited him well, paired with some golden accents like brooches, belt buckles, buttons, or embroidery ❤️ And so true black would give him a strange look and doesn’t really align with his personality. Tho now I wonder if it it might work in specific situations just like the intense colors, since black is also connected to not only to sadness but also restraint and elegance. So I could see Diego wearing darker or even black clothing when his spirit reflecting a quieter, more subdued state of spirit (different from his usual intense emotional outbursts). But this would definitely be more rare and not his go-to choice. Brainstorming hahaha

How do you come up with your designs for the characters? Diego in particular; how did you come up with the design or the color scheme and the like! Seems a complicated process of thought!

Oh gosh, there's a bit to unpack here, but I'll try not to drag it! Diego is an interesting choice, not many people ask me about him, you are very attentive stranger! It's kind of funny because when I first created him he had a simple antagonistic role, mainly because I didn’t have much experience with character design or storytelling at the time. Both him and my skills are still growing.

When designing a character, I start by exploring their personality, background, and role in the story. So now I aimed to capture Diego's inner qualities and flaws, as well as how his environment and relationships influence him. From his pose, to the way he carries himself, his expressions, the silhouette of his body e.t.c. all of that must hint to the viewer who is is as a person.

For instance Diego has mostly the role of an archer in the rebellion, so he should have well-developed upper arms and shoulders. However, given his stealthy and cunning nature, I imagined him to be toned and athletic rather than overly muscular despite being a warrior. Additionally, Diego has a subtle 'posh' vibe to him even when he's being erratic, which I try to show through small details like elegant movements or the gestures of his hands.

After deciding his body structure I move over to all the other details that add to his character. For example I also wanted his clothes to balance his personality with his role in a rebellion, so they are a bit more elegant for a rebel, reflecting his slightly vain nature, but I also tried to portray them as practical. Everything he wears has a purpose, whether it’s for mobility, stealth, or durability in battle. The elegance in his attire is subtle, maybe in the cut of his tunic or the way his boots are laced, but it’s there, showing that he’s someone who cares about how he presents himself. Now that I think about it Diego is pretty much like an elf ranger 😆

As far as his colors go, one of the first things I knew I wanted for Diego was red hair. Even though it’s a bit cliché, I felt it symbolized the fiery aggression he carries inside. As his character developed, the red hair came to represent not just aggression, but also his passion, determination, and his intense need to prove himself (feelings he often keeps hidden). The color also reflects how he loves fiercely, sometimes to the point of self-destruction. I focused on keeping his hair red and built the color scheme around it because having that one fixed detail made the rest of the design process easier for me.

After that I used complementary and softer colors such as greens and earthly browns to highlight his outfit, eyes e.t.c.

It can definitely seem daunting to create something from scratch, I always try to go back to basics so things don't turn into a rumble in my head. For example, when I'm choosing color schemes for either characters or environments I tend to just look back at color theory, and I know that might seem dull, but it’s incredibly important and useful for understanding how colors interact and complement each other (just like it is important to understand anatomy for drawing figures).

I won’t dive into the technical details since there are plenty of online tutorials, but one reference I highly recommend is James Gurney’s book Color and Light. It’s been a game-changer for me and it's a tool I frequently return to when I feel stuck in my coloring process:

Even stuff like character creator and dress-up games can be surprisingly effective for inspiration and kick starting a base for character designs and color schemes if you are feeling stuck. Some of our most beloved original characters started from this, combined with the techniques I mentioned above. For example, Dilla was initially created by @katerinaaqu using one of these games (left). I then drew her and fleshed out her body structure and tailored her appearance to better fit her personality and physical descriptions, as we both envisioned her (right) :

With this I also must point out that the development of Diego and the entirety of Chronicles of Metamoor was a team effort. My friend @katerinaaqu, an awesome writer who collaborates with me on this project, played a big role in shaping these characters. buys expensive af flowers because he can do what he want

he's a god what did you expect

sorta kinda abducts you and takes you on a surprisingly cute date in paris or something and gives you his jacket when you get cold

Crystal Tokyo Living Arrangements: Everyone lives in the central tower.

Top floor is the king and queen’s quarters, which can only be accessed by a teleportation pad in the middle of the courtyard, which can only be activated by the monarchs or their guardians. On one side is the bedroom and bathroom, on one side is the queen’s office and wardrobe, on one is the king’s, and in the middle is the courtyard that is open to a balcony on the fourth side.

Next floor down is the couple’s guardians’ and their spouses’ quarters, with a courtyard in the middle. This floor is also only accessible to the monarchs and the people living on it. The ceiling of the courtyard is enchanted to let sunlight in as if the floor above it didn’t exist. One side is taken up by Mars and Venus (who are both single) and Kunzite and Zoisite (who are together), one by Mercury and Jupiter and their spouses, and one by Jadeite and Nephrite and their spouses.

Next floor down is Chibiusa, Hotaru, and the Quartet with a courtyard similar to the above. Chibiusa and Hotaru are on one side, Ceres and Pallas on one, Juno and Vesta on one, and the fourth side is open to a balcony.

Then the animal companions. Artemis and Luna on one side, Diana on one, and Phobos and Deimos on one, and the fourth is actually taken by a classroom that can be turned into a training simulation.

Then at the bottom of the living quarters are Uranus and Neptune, whose quarters are set up like the king and queen’s.

Pluto’s quarters are in another dimension.

Each bedroom has an additional teleportation pad to a tower on the outskirts of CT. There are ten towers in total, one corresponding to each planet, plus one for the asteroid belt. The queen’s quarters also have a teleportation pad to the prayer room at the heart of the palace, but only she and Chibiusa can use it. Each Senshi’s power is greatly enhanced when she is in her respective tower, but after she leaves she’ll be weaker and have mild flulike symptoms for several days. Haven’t decided the towers’ exact purpose yet.
