Donella settled in old corona after Ulla died, finally deciding that she just wants a quiet life after everything. Becomes the firm, distant, but fair leader of the town. Goes back to finish some work in Ingvarr and finds Hugo and brings him back with her and raises him as a ward and apprentice.

Once he’s older she gives him her own notebook about the trials. She can’t open the library again but maybe her boy will be able to. Will find something on his journey

Meanwhile after Ulla was trapped Quirin took their child and decided to abandon any remaining loyalty he had to the Brotherhood and watching over corona. He decides to instead protect the totems, make sure they never fall into wrong hands. Hands like Ulla’s. Because he loved her but he knows that this power is too much. He’s not good at alchemy so he can’t go and free her and by the time he teaches himself enough to try he knows she’s probably long dead.

So instead he just thinks it’s best to keep people from the same fate. Varian is raised with the training of a Brotherhood Knight, and as he gets older he self teaches himself his mothers work. He’s not just Quirin’s son, he’s also his second in command if any ‘political issues’ arise.

And once Hugo goes on his journey he’s ordered to join his group to stop him from accomplishing his goals of opening the library. Only Varian doesn’t know his mother is trapped there. Only that the library ‘took’ her from them.

Hugo is still snarky and sarcastic but he’s less smarmy, more genuine. Let’s his goofy side out more.

While Varian is much more closed off. Stony faced and more serious. Doesn’t have time for funny business and his snarks are more hurtful than playful. But deep deep down there’s a silly guy in there who still sees the wonder of alchemy and who has a soft spot for raccoons and who could ramble on for hours while making stupid lil jokes.

And Hugo’s determined to dig deep enough to find that part of him

Okay, this is a short update to the High School AU but its been FOREVER and I want to,,,write the interesting bits :)))) Sorry  Chapter 8 is here! ----------------------

  Autumn leaves fell down outside as Varian laid under his blankets curled up and shivering. It was far too cold for him to even attempt to escape the covers and face the bitter weather. He hated the cold so much - it reminded him of his dad and how they’d make snowmen in the snow during winter. It reminded him of the day his dad died and how much time he’d spent crying alone in his room after Rapunzel and Eugene took him in. Winter was the worst season - autumn was just a slightly warmer winter.

  Leaves rustled outside of his window, as he turned over in his bed to watch them blow past while the wind whistled a gentle tune. He wished Hugo were here - it would’ve been nice to cuddle with his boyfriend- well. Hugo wasn't really his boyfriend, was he? Sure they’d kissed a lot and shared a bed and acted like boyfriends, but...the other boy hadn’t asked him out yet and they weren’t officially ‘an item’. He did want to be though. He desperately wanted to be with Hugo.

  The other boy made him feel...special. Whenever they crossed paths in the hall or their hands brushed over each other’s, Varian’s face heated up and little butterflies fluttered in his stomach. Just knowing Hugo thought of him in a romantic way - regardless of whether they were together or not - was the best feeling in the world to him. However, deep down he wanted to be able to hold Hugo’s hand in public and declare with pride that yes, this magnificent, intelligent, slightly annoying man was his boyfriend and yes, he was VERY proud of that. 

  “C’mon kid, time to get up. Hugo will be over in a few minutes for your study session.” he heard Eugene yell from downstairs, prompting him to sit up. Oh! Yeah, it was sunday and Hugo was coming over! Faster than ever, Varian got up out of bed and rushed to get ready, pulling on a random blue sweater and some jeans before fixing his hair. “Get off, Ruddiger!” He scolded the fat bastard of a cat as he made his way over to his desk, waving his arms to ward the cat away. Fortunately, the tabby relented and strutted over to his bed, making himself a little den on the bed.

  Varian glanced around his room with a smile as he examined it for any mess to no avail. Turning on his heel, the raven haired boy made his way down the stairs to the attic and across the hall. His eyes kept focused on the floor as he descended the second flight of stairs before making a sharp left and entering the kitchen where Rapunzel and Eugene sat at the table. “Hey Raps. Hey Eugene.” he declared and waved as he made his way over to the coffee machine and started it.

  “Varian! Hey!” The overly bubbly woman declared with a grin, rising to her feet to engulf Varian in one of her signature rib-crushing hugs accompanied by a kiss to the temple. “How did you sleep last night? And how was your day out with your friends?”

  “Both were fine. I mean, we saw the fireworks which was fun.” He said, shrugging his shoulders and moving out of the hug before he reached out for his now poured coffee and added some milk and vanilla syrup. He took a sip. Perfect. “Speaking of..Hugo should be over soon. So please don’t be weird.” he muttered as he took a seat beside Eugene, the ring of the doorbell echoing throughout the house. 

  “Wouldn’t dream of it, kid!” Eugene exclaimed as Varian, rather quickly, rose to his feet and rushed to the door with his coffee cup in hand. Hand shaky, he swung the door open to be greeted with the smug face of Hugo, donning a green scarf and long, obsidian coat that extended down his back. He looked absolutely handsome, a light red flush to his cheeks from the cold air outside. “Oh wow…” he uttered under his breath as the blonde leant smugly in the doorway.

  “See something ya like, darling?” he flirted with a smirk as Varian shoved him. The other merely snorted of laughter and walked into the house, following Varian as he ascended the staircases up to his room. Almost immediately, as the door was shut, Varian’s back hit the wall and his lips were assaulted by Hugo’s. He eagerly returned the kiss, wrapping his arms around the blonde’s neck and pulling him closer with their chests pressed together.

  After what felt like hours, Hugo broke the kiss and resorted to gentle, fleeting kisses to his lips instead. “I know it’s only been a day, but I missed you so so much…” he whispered to Varian, Hugo’s breath and lips ghosting over Varian’s which made a familiar heat settle at the bottom of his stomach. “Just felt like...showing my favourite dork how much I love him as passionately as possible.” 

  “Alright, but refrain from slamming me into walls. You’re gonna give me blunt force trauma.” Varian giggled as Hugo hooked his arms under his thighs and carried him along to his bed, sitting with Varian in his lap before returning to their previously discarded make out session, Varian deciding to push Hugo back after a few seconds. “As much as I’d love to continue, we have a project to do.”

  “I can think of something else you can do.” Hugo muttered, laughing at the shove he received. “Ow! Okay, okay, let's get our science on, loverboy.” 

  After hours of studying and writing, they ended up cuddling on the tiny bed, legs intertwined and Varian’s head on Hugo’s chest. Humming a gentle lullaby under his breath, Hugo’s fingers rose to play with the raven haired boy’s hair. “Hey Hugo?” he muttered to the blonde, “What are we? Are..are we boyfriends or..?”

  Hugo’s breath hitched and his ministrations stopped, gazing at the ceiling. What were they? Was it safe for them to declare their relationship? Sure, they’d kissed and all but there was Leon sharing that picture last night...would that bother Varian? He thought about it for a second. “Do you want to be? Are you sure you want to be my boyfriend?”

  With that, Varian sat up and looked at the blonde with the most serious look he could muster. “Hugo, I really really like you. I’m sure I want to be your boyfriend.” He stated bluntly, Hugo slightly taken aback by the bluntness of his statement. Slowly, Hugo sat up and pressed a kiss to Varian’s lips, moving a hand to the smaller boy’s hair and the other resting on his waist. 

 Well, who cared if they were together or not? They’d find out Monday. 

  Hopefully it would all be a-okay.

So guess what I’ve started on, now that Dear Fellow Traveller is wrapping up? 

For those who care lol, I guess I wasn’t quite done with the Rowboats universe or whatever you want to call my self indulgent little AU!! Pre-production on this bad boy is already done, so all that’s left is to write it!! So chapters will probably start going live in a few weeks once I have a good buffer written up. 

Summary: Two years after the events of Like A Rowboat, Varian has tried to adapt to the expectations brought by being a King’s Ward, with mixed results. Haunted by ghosts, Varian is forced to face the demons he tried to leave behind in Bayangor when his abdication is forcibly stopped by a third party, out for revenge against the Bayan Royal bloodline. On the run, with few allies left to turn to, Varian finds himself chasing a ghost through a series of tests that only a true heir of Demanitus could ever hope to pass.  But the shadows are ever present, looming and dark, and not everything is as simple as it might seem.

Here we go, Part 2 of the Tangled Sibling AU! I actually cut this in half because it was proving to be way longer than anticipated, but the good news is I should be able to get the next part up yet this week! Enjoy~!

It took a second for the words to sink in before Rowena and Quirin bolted for the wagon door. Kiera jumped off the steps, making way for them to enter. The thee sisters shared a look before running in after their parents.

Literally nothing had changed about the interior of the wagon since Rapunzel had left it merely an hour ago, but somehow the air felt more oppressive, thick with a tension that was ready to snap at any moment. Ruddiger chittered, wringing his little hands nervously as Rowena and Quirin reached their son’s side.

“He’s burning up,” she said, worry thick in her voice.

“Rapunzel, can’t you heal him,” Catalina asked, voice barely above a whisper.

If it were Dad or Kiera, Rapunzel wouldn’t hesitate. She’d managed to successfully heal them from colds and other ills in the past. Kiera always came down with a cold at least once a winter, and Catalina usually got sick for a week or two come spring and fall if she spent time outside--- for some reason, Rapunzel’s healing magic was only ever a short-term fix for Catalina. Mom’s working theory was that it was the pollen in the air making her miserable, and it wasn’t like Rapunzel could cleanse the air of the little irritants, so Catalina had taken to spending most of the fall and spring in the wagon until Mom could get a hold of the ingredients needed to make the only medicine that seemed to offer her any relief. Dad would get sick sometimes, though it was rare and tended to come after Kiera recovered from her cold if it came at all. Mom never got sick, but that was probably because she wasn’t human so mortal ills likely didn’t affect her.

Varian and Rapunzel, however, had never caught so much as a sniffle in their lives.

And unlike Kiera and Catalina, Varian had a lot of magic. Rapunzel had been able to handle cuts and scraps in the past, but it took a lot of effort and Varian needed to be able to help her out.

Instead of answering, Rapunzel swallowed hard and stepped forward. She undid her barrettes, letting her golden hair fall loose around her shoulders. 

“Mom? Dad? Do you think maybe I could…” she trailed off, holding up a thick lock of her hair as a visual cue.

“Rapunzel, I don’t know if---”

“Row, we have to let her try,” Quirin cut in, somehow managing to keep his voice level.

“What if she gets sick, too,” Rowena worried. If there was an illness that could take Varian down, it wasn’t too much of a leap to think it might get Rapunzel, too.

“We have to try.”

Rowena bit her lip, but nodded, moving a bit to give Rapunzel room to join them.

Varian looked terrible. He was paler than usual, almost ashy, and it looked like he was soaked in sweat. Rapunzel radiated heat like the sun---a comparison Kiera had made once and refused to let go of the second she realized the pun---and sure, six people sleeping in the same area meant for a lot of body heat (a godsend come the winter), but the nights were still fairly cold this time of year. There was no reason for Varian to be sweating so much. And his breathing…it was shallow and fast. He’d been perfectly fine last night.

She carefully placed her hair around him, deciding not to wrap it around him because the idea of jostling him and accidentally doing more harm than good terrified her. With any luck, this would do the trick and Varian would be back to normal. Rapunzel took a deep breath and started singing.

“Flower, gleam and glow; let your power shine.”

The faint tingle that was constantly humming under her skin grew stronger, concentrating in her scalp as it poured into her hair, the strands lighting up with the sun’s magic.

“Make the clock reverse; bring back what once was---”

Rapunzel always sang with her eyes closed; when they were little, Varian had noticed and asked her why. When he’d convinced her to sing without closing her eyes, they discovered that her hair wasn’t the only thing that glowed. Which explained why her eyes always burned a little anytime she used her magic. But since her eyes were closed, Rapunzel wasn’t able to notice certain things.

She wasn’t able to notice Varian’s hair suddenly glowing the strongest it ever had outside of him using his magic during a full super moon. And, since it happened so fast, neither Quirin nor Rowena were able to warn her in time. The resulting surge of power sent her flying back wards, snapping her out of the healing trance. The glow disappeared as soon as Rapunzel stopped singing, which was probably for the best.

“Rapunzel!”

She held her head, wincing as she recovered from the shock. Dad’s callous-rough hand gripped her arm and slipped behind her back to help her regain her footing.

“I’m okay, I’m okay,” she assured. “Is Varian---” Rapunzel caught sight of her brother and sucked in a breath.

He was still glowing, but it was violent, wildly inconsistent, and he looked as if it were causing him pain. Mom pulled him up to her shoulder, holding him tight and muttering under her breath. The longer she murmured, the more the glowing began to slow and smooth out, until finally it was a dull pulsing sort.

“I’m sorry---”

“Rapunzel, you have nothing to be sorry about,” Rowena replied. “Quirin, get Rapunzel and Catalina outside now. Kiera, come and help me with your brother.”

“Mom, what’s wrong with Varian,” Catalina asked, putting up a token fight as Quirin ushered them both towards the door.

“Just stay with your father,” Rowena ordered.

Kiera stumbled out of the wagon nearly an hour later, trembling from a combination of shock and the effort it took to not completely fall to pieces.

“Mom said she needs you,” she said, voice wavering a little.

“Go sit and get something to eat,” Quirin told her, giving her a reassuring pat on the shoulder. Kiera just nodded, moving forward to join her sisters at the fire pit.

“How is he,” Rapunzel asked.

“He’s…not good. Mom doesn’t think it’s catchy, but…I know there’s more to it than that and she just didn’t tell me.”

Kiera dropped onto the ground, propped up against the log they’d commandeered for a bench when they first set up camp and next to where Catalina was seated. The redhead gently patted her sister’s head, setting up a soft stroking motion that had been known to soothe Kiera when she got agitated.

“I don’t get it,” she continued, curling up into Catalina’s touch. “He was just fine yesterday!”

“Maybe he wasn’t,” Catalina pointed out. “After all, the full moon was only a couple of days ago. If something was wrong, it probably wouldn’t have shown up until that extra energy started to go away. Remember two years ago after the winter solstice? Varian had to stay in bed for a whole week because he got that concussion and didn’t notice until after the full moon wore off.”

“Yeah, but he still woke up,” Kiera retorted. “I couldn’t even get him to twitch.”

There was a vulnerability in her voice that Kiera rarely ever let show. She’d always been the sort of person who liked to put up a strong and independent front, unfazed by anything and ready for everything. But underneath all the bluff and bluster, she was still just a kid. Her nineth birthday was still months away. And she’d already lost her family once; no doubt the idea of Varian being so sick terrified the heck out of her.

“Varian is going to be just fine,” Rapunzel assured her, joining her on the grass and putting an arm around her. “You’ll see. He’ll beat this bug and be right back to his old self in no time.”

“What if he doesn’t get better before the new moon gets here,” Kiera murmured. “New moons have been making him weaker lately. He acts like they don’t, but I’m not stupid.”

Rapunzel winced. The constant shifts in his energy levels had been hitting him harder than they used to, but Mom had said that was likely just a side-effect of Varian entering puberty and that it should stabilize as he got older. Not that the assurance made it any less worrying at this point. Before she could think of any platitudes to offer, the sound of the wagon creaking caught their attention, and the girls turned to see their parents stepping out into the daylight.

“Is he okay,” Rapunzel asked, immediately standing back up.

“For the moment, he’s about as okay as can be expected,” Rowena replied, sounding absolutely exhausted. “We’ll have to keep an eye on his condition, but things seem to have calmed for a bit.”

“Do you know what’s wrong?”

“Whatever he’s managed to catch, it’s interacting with the Moon’s power.” Rowena took a seat on the log, undoing her bun in order to tidy it back up. “Whether it’s for better or worse, I can’t say just yet. That being said, considering the reaction we witnessed, Rapunzel, I want you to keep your distance until I can figure out exactly what’s going on. Hopefully, this is just an aggressive illness that’s as short-lived as a cold.”

“And if it’s not,” Catalina asked, voice small and quiet.

Rowena took a deep breath. “If it’s not…well, we may have to bind his magic.”

i’m not going to write it because i already have too many projects going, but a merlin inspired au with rapunzel as arthur, kinda. she still has a similar backstory to in her OWN canon, but because gothel stole rapunzel for The Magic TM and arianna died in childbirth (in keeping with the merlin au). whether or not that was gothel’s doing is up to your interpretation.

eugene is merlin narratively, but complete with eugene backstory (edmond wasn’t king of the dark kingdom but Last of The Dragon Lords and gave him up for similar reasons and eugene’s just like. i cannot even with you right now) he finds rapunzel, they have the tangled adventure (but with eugene doing subtle magic when he needs to because he is very good at the stealth thing and the only one that knows that he has magic is lance)

eugene, really, would prefer to just like. run off with rapunzel and never look back because, hey. corona is a very bad place where he’s seen people burned at the stake for Being Like Him and he’d prefer to not live here forever, but rapunzel wants to meet her dad and go back to him, which is all fine and good except for king frederic is the king of burning people like him alive and rapunzel doesn’t know about the magic so she doesn’t know why that would specifically not appeal to eugene. yay.

so rapunzel rolls up to the palace with boyfriend in tow and eugene’s like. hi. and king fred looks at him and is like. ugh. him? really?

eugene is not a famous thief in this one because he would prefer Not To Die, Thank You, but he’s still obviously Not A Prince Or Anything and king fred is very much not impressed. can he please go away, rapunzel? and rapunzel’s like no, he’s staying, i love him. and fred’s like. okay then. you need a servant.

and eugene’s like. well that’s a way to not be noticed, i suppose. he’s not super thrilled about thing, but it works, right? he can handle that. it ends up being a lot of getting to hang out with rapunzel (a major perk) saving rapunzel’s life in broad daylight (less of a perk, but someone’s got to do it, right?) and telling a dragon to fuck off (how did this castle even GET a dragon anyway?)

the dragon’s like “destiny!” and he’s like “uh, no. i just love rapunzel, destiny doesn’t have anything to do with it.” and the dragon’s just. shrieking in the background because D E S T I N Y and eugene’s just. sighing. because he doesn’t need a Destiny to love this girl, okay? it’s just love.

cassandra is morgana-ish. she’s not the king’s ward, exactly. i’m foreseeing more of what merlin’s original job was going to be where she’s a physician’s apprentice and bitter that her dad would not let her be a guard. she was going to end up as the princess’s maidservant, but for better or for worse, she got out of that one because eugene showed up. 

rapunzel seeks HER out all the time to be friends and eugene’s like? really? the dragon lady? and cassandra hits him over the head with a headpiece thingy and it is Good TM

she finds out about her magic about the same time that morgana did in canon, due partially to dreams, partially due to her performing accidental magic in situations to save rapunzel. and she’s like, over in the corner, hyperventilating because OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD MAAAGIC OH GOD OH GOD EXECUTION OH GOD

and he’s like. what the fuck, dragon. is this what you were talking about “cassandra will betray her?” and the dragon’s like “she has magic it’s written on teh wall” and eugene is just like. fuck off she’s scared and lonely and i’m not going to take your advice on anything, later large aligator

eugene, for all his faults... has different faults than merlin, bbc. so he is immediately on his way to Talk This Out because cassandra is his friend and if she has the magic, she shouldn’t think that she’s the only one in the world or that it makes her evil or whatever. cassandra’s main worries at this point are trying to keep the magic secret (which, judging from the fact that EUGENE does it can’t be that hard) and having to hide things from her dad and rapunzel because she’s. not entirely sure that either of them will side with her on this.

minor conflicts include rapunzel arranged marriage subplots where they both have to thwart the suitors because, uh, balancing rapunzel dating the TWO of them is hard enough they could not manage with a third rapunzel partner, thank you very much, and rapunzel adopting random criminals who all want to kill her All The God Damn Time. varian is mordred. i know they didn’t do anything valuable or interesting with mordred but i’ll still keep that.

lance comes back and eugene is like, seventy five shades of terrified because lance KNOWS about the magic and also is prone to stealing stuff and he loves him but he trusts him about as far as he can throw him

the main conflict is the two of them waffling about when they should tell rapunzel, beause the longer it goes the more terrified they are that what if she’ll decide to take her dad’s side and hate them. and like, they’re two of the most powerful mages in the world so they could get out of the kingdom just fine if they needed to, but. they sure don’t want to.

and then there’s the worries about what that would do, even if rapunzel sided with them, with her relationship with the king and how things would go there. i don’t have those things worked out but they would sure be points of interest

1. 𝐐𝐔𝐄𝐄𝐍 𝐎𝐅 𝐃𝐀𝐑𝐊 𝐊𝐈𝐍𝐆𝐃𝐎𝐌 CASSANDRA

Dark queen Cassandra the greatest of social isolation. Has locked herself && her kingdom away for 10 years in fear of the moonstones powers evacuating citizens in bulk. Which ultimately left her waiting ( in the wings ) there for the sundrop to arrive && to protect the moonstone.

Has sent her brotherhood to search && retrieve the sun drop to no avail until the sundrop arrives to claim its destiny. In a fit of panic and last resort Cassandra gives into the power of the moonstone. Then warding off the opposite until their next clash.

Cassandra had always been infatuated && intrigued with the idea and sun drop in general all she’s known was the moonstone.

2. AVATAR THE LAST AIR BENDER AU

Cassandras father is a general in the 100 year war for the earth army. They reside in Ba Sing Se in which raps would be earth princess. Cass wants to follow in her father’s footsteps.

She’s trained hard to become a powerful earth bender. Cassandra betrays raps for the fire nation bc Azula makes her a general.

3. BREATH OF THE WILD AU

Cassandra was adopted by the captain of the royal guard. All the same. She is the one with the sword that seals the darkness. A fusion of her blackrock sword and the moonstone. Rapunzel is still born of the sundrop but she’s having difficulty activating her powers. This results in moving Cassandras position as her appointed knight. Rapunzel is fine with this and cass on the other hand . . . Is skeptical of taking care of a preppy princess her desired position was of the royal guard. Viewing her job as babysitting Rapunzel around wherever she would like. As time goes on the two bond , they had much time to spend together so it was expected. Cassandra never seen herself getting along with a flower child like rapunzel but . . . Opposites do attract. Zhan Tiri the legend was rumored to return within the current years. So they had to prepare for her return properly. Varian a young inventor had presented the royal court with the idea of guardians to protect the kingdom. Ancient technology was used to construct them. They seemed to be excellent assistants to the townsfolk. Rapunzel’s powers still hadn’t shown any sign of awakening. Chaos breaks loose && darkness begins to manifest and corrupt Corona. Evil monsters and glitched guardians begin to attack citizens in attempt to wipe out Corona. Cassandras job was to protect the princes && she knew when they were outnumbered so . . . They ran. Leaving everything behind going as far as their legs could take them. They’re cornered by guardians && this was it. Cassandra is willing to put her life on the line for the princess. She defeats three but left bruised && bloodied. She was done for THEY were done for until in their time of need the sundrop dares show its true powers decimating the guardians within its range leaving a cemetery of mechanical corpses and ancient gear. Having the brotherhood which Corona was partnered with take a lifeless Cassandra to a rumored Demanitus rejuvenation spring for one hundred years to heal. Within that time Rapunzel had returned to the castle to hold off the evil of Zhan Tiri trapping her with sealing magic. Had it grown weak after a century , Corona was running out of time before total annihilation. The moonstone sword being placed back in the dark kingdom to heal as well from it’s final battle. There it wait to be pulled by the only one worthy.

RAPUNZEL CORONA

Diagnosis: (SCID) Severe Combined Immunodeficiency

Symptoms: Frequent/Severe Respiratory Infection, Poor Growth, Pneumonia

Story: Rapunzel has spent her whole life in the suite V.I.P room of the hospital her father works in, Corona's Hospital, where she is treated for SCID. An immune disorder that prevents her from ever leaving her father's hospital, or interacting with the other patients. Her mother spends everyday with her as her nurse, and her only few form of friends were a stuffed chameleon named Pascal, and a stuffed horse named Maximus.

EUGENE FITZHERBERT

Diagnosis: (CF) Cystic Fibrosis

Symptoms: Lung Infection, Inability to Gain Weight, Constant Coughing

Story: Day after day, the people of the orphanage had passed off Eugene's constant cough attacks as nothing, until the day he coughed so much that the six-year-old passed out. At the hospital, Eugene was finally proper diagnosed. The boy was immediately passed from the orphanage to the hospital ward. His caretaker, Lance, looks after him day-after-day, ensuring that Eugene was taking his medication and not trying to do anything spontaneous. But, after everything, Eugene tries to live his days as if it's his last.

CASSANDRA GUARD

Diagnosis: Arrhythmia

Symptoms: Slow Heart-Rate, Dizziness, Chest Pain, Fainting

Story: As the adopted daughter of the Chief of Police, all Cassandra wanted was to follow in her father's footsteps. All her life, she had trained for the day she would become a real officer. However, in the last day of police training, her head got dizzy, and she passed out. When she woke up in the Corona Hospital, they told her that she had to stay there until they could get her a transplant, or she would not make it. Police Training could wait.

VARIAN RUDIGER

Diagnosis: (XP) Xeroderma Pigmentosum

Symptoms: Sensitivity to Light, Slow Development,

Story: Varian has been sheltered ever since early childhood because of his life-threatening sensitivity to sunlight. During the day, he stays housebound with his father, Quirin, the mayor of a small town, and his only friend, a stuffed raccoon toy named Rudiger. Whenever the sun sets, he is allowed out but can never go farther than the edge of his hometown. However, as Varian got older, his condition became more critical, and the only place his father could find help, was farther than Varian has ever gone before in his life. Corona's Hospital.

chapter 1 - once upon a time

Frisk

In their short life, Frisk would say that they’ve been through… a lot of weird stuff. Honestly, there’s nothing that can surprise them at this point.

Or that’s what they thought. Turns out the universe loves proving them wrong.

They have no idea where they are, except that it is dark. *The void? Chara suggests calmly. The thought makes their blood run cold. They know what happened to Gaster - will it happen to them, too? Can humans even be erased, the way monsters can?

Chara doesn’t seem to notice their fear, though, *How did we get here? I do not remember falling into the CORE.

“*That - that’s not funny.” A bad taste rises in their throat, and they swallow it down. Void or not, they don’t want to throw up here. Just the thought makes their heart pound. *I am sorry. Chara says, but they say it in that voice they use when they’re not really sorry, but feel like they need to say it anyways. Frisk doesn’t call them out on it, though. They probably didn’t mean to scare them - they’re friends, after all.

Instead of answering, they stand up. Their legs feel weird, like they’ve been sitting too long. *Somehow, it seems there is a solid surface underneath you. Try walking forward. They carefully do so, relaxing a bit each step. It’s comforting, the thought that they’re not going to fall. “*I’m gonna look for a way out,” Frisk tells Chara.

It’s hard, though, when everything is black. They’re doing less looking and more flailing their arms around wildly. From inside their head, they can hear Chara laughing at them. Better at them than their scary jokes, though. So they go on in what they hope is the right direction (because they don’t know what they’ll do if it isn’t.)

Chara stops talking after a while, like they’re thinking of something. Frisk pretends not to notice. It’s a bit too quiet without their chatter, though, and it scares them a bit. They wind up the music box in their locket, and listen to the song. It makes them want to cry, but better that than going crazy from how quiet it is.

*Frisk… Chara says suddenly. Frisk doesn’t like the way their voice sounds, but it’s not enough to stop them from walking. *Frisk, they say again, sounding even more worried now. They still don’t stop walking, because they want to get out of here right now.

*Frisk, there is no-!

Instead of ground, they step right into - a hole? Off a cliff? They can’t really tell. But that’s not important because they’re slipping and they can’t catch themselves, can’t keep themselves from falling. Again.

There’s nothing they can do now except for wait to hit the ground. Is there even any ground in the void? Or are they going to keep falling until they die? Would they be able to die here?

Falling in the void is strange - it feels less like falling and more like they’re floating. Like the girl from that movie Alphys likes, the one about a floating kingdom. It’s not a good comparison, though, because they’d love to be in that movie and they hate being here.

*...is that a light? Frisk can’t see it, but they feel it burning them up. Then they see it. It’s bright, brighter than the sun, and it’s growing. It eats up the darkness until they can’t see anything but white.

And eventually, that fades, too.

Varian

Varian is hauling equipment to his lab when the sky bursts into light.

It blinds him and leaves his head pounding, as if someone is hammering a nail into his skull. By the time it’s over, he’s gasping for air, hoping it’ll be enough to ward off the nausea.

Above him, there is a small silhouette, stark against the bright blue sky. At first, he thinks it’s a meteor, but as it descends, he can make out hair and clothes and oh god that’s a person. He watches as they crash into the trees and land with a dull thud.

And just like that, the trance is over. Everything processes at once - therewasalightandthenacometpersontheyfelltheyfell - and he’s not sure what to do now. The scientific part of him is screaming to look, because whatever that was, it definitely wasn’t natural. As if that wasn’t incentive enough, there’s a tugging sensation in his stomach, like something’s pulling him towards them. Weird.

Ruddiger jumps on his shoulder, shooting him an apprehensive look. Varian gives him a quick pat and mutters, “It’s ok, buddy, this’ll only a minute.” He’ll go in, see who it is, and then go get help if they need it. And they’re going to need it, because scientifically speaking, they’d at least have a few broken bones, if they’re lucky.

Bile rises in his throat as he realizes they could be dying. Could be dead.

Nope, nope, he is not going to think about that. He’s just going to focus on seeing what happened right now, that’s all. He can worry about that later. Besides, he can’t deny that he isn’t curious, and what kind of scientist would ever deny his own curiosity?

Not him, that’s for sure, he thinks to himself as he follows his gut into the tree grove.

The first thing Varian notices is the blood. There’s not that much - just near their head, but it’s still enough to make him feel woozy. Ruddiger digs his claws into his shoulder, reminding him what he’s here for, and he takes a deep breath. He doesn’t recognize their strange clothes. Must not be from here, he thinks. They’re small, too; just going off of their height, he’d say they’re about half his age.

Between their arms, something flashes bright gold, catching his eye as he stumbles back a bit from the sheer amount of blood.

He has to get his dad, a doctor, anyone. He can’t - he wasn’t expecting so much blood. He‘s prepared to run when a sudden cold overtakes his wrist, as if someone with icy hands was grabbing him. *The bleeding is superficial, a voice whispers in his head, leaving will only make it worse.

But they need help-

*Then help them! You cannot let anyone else know that we are here!

Varian can’t tell if they are his thoughts or not, but he finds himself being pulled towards the child nonetheless. Ruddiger hops off and scampers to their side. He bats at their head, and they shift slight in response. He watches with baited breath as they lift themselves up, limbs shaking. After a moment of struggling, they somehow manage to get into a sitting position, tucking their legs underneath them.

How-? A glimmer of pride, one that is not his own, rises up in him, and the icy grip holding on to him vanishes. At that moment, the child turns their unfocused eyes on him - well, in his direction. They blink once, twice, and slur in a strange accent, “*…Kara?”

Their face is bloodstained in a way that makes his stomach churn, so he tries to focus on their eyes, which are glowing even redder than the apples he feeds Ruddiger sometimes. Huh. That’s… weird.

For a moment, the two just stare at each other, though Varian can’t really tell if they’re looking at him or in his general direction. Then, for some reason, they reach for him with outstretched arms. They kind of look like Ruddiger when he wants to be held - wait.

“You… you want me to carry you?” The thought is foreign, absurd, and he’s pretty sure moving them is a bad idea, but they don’t really give him a choice. Ignoring his protests, they lean forward and slump against him. Blood sluggishly leaks from them all the while, staining his clothes.

What’s he supposed to do now? He’s not some kind enough of… childcare expert! He’s the opposite of a childcare expert-!

*Oh my god, just carry them! the voice snaps. He readily obeys, slipping an arm under their legs and lifting them up. They only feel about as heavy as Ruddiger, much to his surprise (are kids supposed to be this light?). As if summoned by his thoughts, the raccoon chirps, holding a broken locket in his hands.

A deep sadness resonates within him, and Varian is startled by it. He’s never seen the thing before, why is he so upset at the sight of it?

Regardless, he allows Ruddiger to store it in the apron pocket, and picks up the broken pieces. From what he can tell, it’s not the actual locket that’s broken, but a music box inside of it. He is relieved; machinery isn’t difficult to fix, as long as you have all the right pieces.

Ruddiger hops on his shoulder and he stands up, his legs only slightly cramped. After a moment, he decides to head directly to his lab rather than try to pull a cart while carrying a child and Ruddiger. He’ll come back for it later; there’s no reason for anyone to try and steal the materials.

. . .

The voice was right, Varian thinks idly as he wraps thick bandages around the unconscious child. Other than the gash on their head and a few cuts on their hands, they’re completely fine. It’s more like they happened to stumble in a particularly rocky area than fell from the sky.

They passed out sometime while he was carrying them, which he only figured out when he laid them down on the table. God, he immediately assumed the worst with how limp they were then.  He just hopes they don’t fall off somehow.

Whatever he had been hearing back there, and he knows he heard something, has gone silent. Quite frankly, he’s relieved. It was really starting to stress him out.

“Ruddiger!” Varian calls as he stumbles to his work-desk. “Tell me… when they wake up, ok?”

With a sigh, he slumps over the scattered papers in a dead faint.

Chara

Chara watches with amusement. The human boy seemed to be aghast at the sight of blood, but they did not realize to this extent. The raccoon - Ruddiger? - stays seated next to Frisk, watching the boy anxiously.

*It is alright, Chara tells it gently, you can go with him. “Ruddiger” stares at them instead. They blink, and remember that their locket is still in the boy’s possession.

They do not feel comfortable with Frisk knowing it is broken, and they say softly, *Actually, could you help me wake him up?

2. What is your favorite snippet of dialogue?

I don’t really have a favorite bit of dialogue I’ve written yet. I love almost all of it equally because I’m usually exploring my OTP and their interactions with each other.I do have a bit that makes me smile from the upcoming chapter of Step By Step.

~They were halfway down the bluff when Jaina stopped, “Strange, I was sure Kalec would have protective wards around the Nexus while he was here by himself.”

“There are none?” Asked Varian.

“No,” she shook her head, remembering Varian had no arcane senses whatsoever. “Had I known this, I’d have teleported us closer.”

“What would’ve happened had you teleported us too close to protective warding?” Varian asked.

“Defensive spells would activate,” she answered. “We very likely could’ve been blown up upon materialization.”

“Then where you put us before was perfect,” he smiled handsomely at her.

A sense of giddiness rushed up Jaina’s spine and pulled a short, quiet giggle from her throat. Had he always smiled like that?~

5. What’s your favorite headcanon you use in fics?

Hmm, I’m not sure I’ve used much in the way of personal headcanons in what I’ve released so far. I can however give you one I intend to use soon for both AU paths I’m working on.

Anduin still carries the hearthstone Jaina gave him when he was thirteen to visit Theramore. It’s scorched black and has several deep fissures running through it from the abrupt destruction of its way-point. The runes are mangled and mostly illegible, but if you study it long enough, you can still make out parts of Jaina’s name.

Even though its current condition is due to a travesty, he can still look at the hearthstone and remember better times. Anduin was able to escape to Theramore to get away from his father whenever they had disagreements. While he was there, he could visit his beloved ‘Auntie,’ and ultimately, not be a prince. He could just be Anduin, an adventurous teenager who could explore (under Jaina’s watchful eye I’m sure), goof off, and not have to worry about what other people thought of him. With Jaina he knew a kindred spirit who did not like violence, and taught him there were other ways of solving problems.

I believe it was also in Theramore where Anduin had his first personal interaction/channeling of the Light by blessing Baine. (I might be wrong here).

He carried the hearthstone in his pocket when he was adventuring in Pandaria and considers it his good luck charm. When he gets older, he has a loop carefully drilled into it and wears it on the same chain that holds the key and locket once belonging to his mother, Tiffin. This way he can, at all times, carry mementos from both of his mothers close to his heart.

11. What’s a fanfic idea you haven’t done yet?

I have a few I’ve been meaning to start/play with. One is the back stories of my OCs, which I realize no one has actually met yet.

The other involves my usual cast of victi- *coughs* I mean characters. It’s set more in the canon universe during Warlords of Draenor. Basic outline, an Emerald Nightmare dragon wreaks havoc on a Hallows End ball in Darnassus, warping the banquet hall and surrounding buildings into a haunted maze of horrors and strife.

Fun twists, everyone has been transformed into their costumes, and most are in a feral state reflecting said costumes.

Examples: Anduin goes as an ancient hero (He’s a spoof of Link from Legend of Zelda), and becomes this ancient warrior. His talent with the Light diminishes (but doesn’t disappear), and his physical strength and agility increases. He retains his lucidity throughout the fic.

Kalec, thinking he’s being cute, has come to this interesting mortal celebration as Deathwing. Unfortunately, this makes him Deathwing, and they regularly have to run from him because he’s too big and dangerous to take on. He patrols the maze throughout the fic.

Varian, after being badgered by Genn, goes as a wolf. Subsequently, he’s turned into a wolf much like Fenris or Fenryr. He is also feral, but Anduin is able to pull him to lucidity after a frightful encounter.

Various other maze monsters/party goers include undead dwarf clowns with chainsaws, creepy babies, strange hedge-witch like creatures with their mouths sewn shut, flaming goblin trains, etc etc.

@redandpointy saw the awful first draft tibits I managed to scrawl down. It went on the back burner in favor of more… lighthearted content!

Ed and Edna would be Jay's bio parents and unlike the series where Arianna is only decent she was robbed I tell you ROBBED and Fred is mentioned above, they are stellar parents.

They were an older couple when Edna became pregnant. Because of that there were a few complications. Wanting to save his wife and unborn child, King Ed(mund? ward?) sends his troops to find the legendary lightning flower (can't think of a better name at the moment)

Jay is born with electric blue eyes from the flower but otherwise is perfectly healthy.

Until he gets yoinked but Nadakhan, not a djinn in this au but still a jerk.

In line with the Moon!Varian aus I see, Nadakhan makes Jay wear gloves. But his hair doesn't have to be long (unless it's a fashion decision but it would get in the way of inventing things)

Would that make the ghost crew (Morro, Ghoultar, etc.) Patch and Burns or would they be disciples of Zhan Tiri (A.K.A the Overlord?) Unless we want to throw the Sons of Garmadon into this.

Chen would def be the Baron, Stalyan would be Skylor, Clouse as the Weseal.

But Would Garmadon (if assigned the role of Quirin) be a part of the Brotherhood? Or would the brotherhood take the place if the Elemental Alliance?

My own first take for the tangled au is under the cut, but I like yours a lot!

My take was Lloyd as Rapunzel and not just because he's blond.

If we take the golden power into consideration, that is very close to the original sundrop. (Creation vs healing/reversal of time?)

Like the above take, Kai would be Eugene, but instead of working solo he would be working with the other ninja (found family!) In a thieves guild. They would get separated trying to run from the royal guard but it's Kai that finds Lloyd and brings him.

Like the show and movie, it takes a while to warm up to Lloyd, but eventually it's overprotective brother mode activated™

Nya wanted to be a Ninja but the others thought it was too dangerous for her and they needed a person in the inside (and she's left waiting in the wings~)

We already got an Emperor Garmadon so why not? Except he's good and looks like Sensei Garmadon.

The Baron squad stays the same.

Ray as King Edmund?

Pythor (my phone autocorrected to python oop) is definitely Gothel in this situation.

Can't decide of Ronin should be Hector or someone else.

I put some thought into it and I think that:

Nya should be Cassandra (because like have you seen the beginning of season 6?)

Kai should be Eugene (because he‘s smug)

(They would be half-siblings)

And Lloyd should be Varian (because of the dad-son thing)

The only thing I‘m not sure about yet is who should be Rapunzel.

Should it be Jay, Pixal or Zane? What do y‘all think?
