I wanted to draw a M*A*S*H cartoon the next time I was filling an opportune chronology gap, which came up for yesterday’s. (Often when looking for inspiration for the next cartoon's gagwriting, I will look to the spreadsheet where I track the existing gags' chronology and see what's the biggest chronological gap to fill.) Looking for further inspiration, I checked which M*A*S*H episodes fell near the chronology point of this gap, and one of them was War of Nerves, the one with the bonfire, and with - well, here’s what I’ve written before

that scene in the m*a*s*h episode with the bonfire when father mulcahy comes into the tent where sidney freedman’s been holding informal therapy sessions amirite

father mulcahy’s all like “i have this friend”

and sidney refrains from rolling his eyes and he’s like “go on”

and father mulcahy’s like “he’s having a rough time and he’s all in a funk and stuff”

and sidney’s thinking “i can’t believe it’s you pulling this shit on me” and he says “who’s your friend father”

and father mulcahy says “you”

and sidney laughs because he’s so delighted to be fucking surprised for fucking once

and

that’s the scene when sidney says “when pierce and hunnicutt lose a patient he’s out of his misery. when i lose one i’ve lost a mind”

and father mulcahy says “when i lose one i’ve lost a soul”

So it’s a great scene. And I thought I’d salute that scene. And, being me, I wanted to draw a crossover with one of Three Faces’ spacetime travelers. So I thought, “Who watches the watchmen? ... No. Who listens to the listeners?”

Imma disagree with OP. Sidney Frredman is one of those things special because they're uncommon.

That said, it is a crime that retrospective shows never include Sidney's scenes with Arnold Chandler and Father Mulcahy.

"When Pierce or Hunnicutt loses a patient, they're out of their misery. When I lose one, I've lost a mind."

sidney freedman should have been part of a main cast, can you imagine how much better everyone would feel with a sassy, kind, professional psychiatrist at hand??!
