I really wanted to ask you about how you do the backgrounds? (Something i struggle with) whats the process? Like from start to finish, also, to do the rise backgrounds do you use reference from the show and generally real photo of ny? Or do you come up with them? And last question- The shadow and light on the background- Like HOW

Backgrounds are a really broad subject and I'm always a little overwhelmed when asked this question. Just like drawing the human body, backgrounds take time, repetition, and practice!

My answer got a bit long, so it's going under a read more :) but if you digest info better in video format I found this on youtube

It pretty much goes over everything I wanted to say, but in a much better way. I wish I had found it before writing all this out lol

ok, first of all, I'm not a teacher nor was I built to be one of those cool helpful art tutorial people who do a full coloured tutorial filled with illustrations. This is just going to be a messy "how I do backgrounds / environment layouts from start to finish." kinda thing.

... lets start with a sight tangent.

Sketch from Life!!!

If you want to get better at backgrounds I recommend doing some sketching out in the real world!

When I was first getting into doing backgrounds I went to cafes and parks to just sketch the buildings and objects. Sketch rocks, flowers, clumps of grass, garbage cans, bottles, tables, street signs, etc. If you are drawing a tree observe how the trunks twist, how the bark flows, or how the leaves are bunched.

If you can't leave the house the same still applies! Sketch the interiors of your house, the walls, or common objects like chairs and bookshelves. How are objects stacked? items on the floor?

If you aren't comfortable with drawing outside or in public you can take some photos to draw from! They are good for practice and you can use them again as references later. Alternatively you can find pictures online of buildings and objects to sketch as practice.

All spaces have objects in them, it becomes easier to draw those kinds of spaces when you already have spent time observing and sketching them.

ALSO! They don't have to be good sketches! It's just to build out your mental catalogue and strengthen your perception of perspective.

now the actual thing...

BACKGROUNDS

(the pictures used for this are my own. I dug them out of my 2022 folder)

Backgrounds have slightly different rules based on what you are making them for. Videogame Environment Concept Art vs Animation Layouts vs Comic Backgrounds vs Illustration backgrounds.

They all follow the same basics, which I will go over here, but the intention and function of those designs are going to be different. It's all about how you set up the scene and what it's purpose is!

Brainstorming and Thumbnailing

I like to think about a location as though it is a character. An abandoned old house with creaky sagging floorboards is very different from a futuristic space ship with sharp metal floor panels. A gas station has a very different feeling from a library.

I usually start by asking what is this location's story? Why was it built and for what purpose? What kinds of things does this room need to fulfill that purpose? You don’t need solid answers, but its good to be thinking about it while you are working.

Next, sketch some ideas for how this place is going to look. For me, this usually involves drawing the idea from multiple angles and then making lists & small sketches of the objects I think should be filling the space.

Example: The main character of my original work is a Wanderer. They collect a lot of things on their travels, but those items have to be small enough to be easily carried in a backpack. I wanted his room to be in the corner of an attic, walled off by curtains, and filled with trinkets. You can see some of my brainstorming above.

References

I only look for references after I've done some sketching and planning; this is to solidify my idea first so that I don't accidentally copy anyone else's work. I will make a moodboard with pictures of lighting, colours, items, rooms with specific ceiling beams, old chairs, etc. basically whatever I feel fits the vibe.

Honestly, I don't use references as much as I should. For ROTTMNT fanart I look at backgrounds and screenshots from the series to study the style. I also reference actual photos of NYC to get a feel for how Rise condenses the visual information.

In general, it's good to have references of real life objects/locations, because there are so many details like cracks in pavement, stickers on polls, crowning on buildings, fancy fencing, weird chair legs, etc. that you might not think of. It's the imperfect details that can make a location feel more alive.

Perspective

Once you have your chosen sketch we move to.... the infamous perspective boxes. Doing backgrounds is just learning to be comfortable drawing So Many boxes and carving items out of them.

Many better artists than myself have made videos on perspective, vanishing points, and all the technical bits. Videos like THIS ONE and THIS ONE are helpful (this post is great too!!). There are probably a lot of classes to be found on Skillshare or Schoolism. I learned a lot of this in my college art course, so I can't give you a specific video which helped me.

You can get by and be a good artist without learning this stuff. There are quite a few successful artists who have admitted they never bothered to learn perspective (one of these people even made a whole graphic novel series).

I personally avoided properly learning this stuff until I was in my 20s because I thought it would be boring and difficult to do. tbh I really wish I had learned it earlier because it's so much fun to make those silly little boxes imo. It looks scary and complicated but, just like drawing humans, it just takes time, repetition, and practice to develop the knowledge and skills.

Cleanup

You have your boxes and lines! Cool! Now to make a scene out of it. Fill in the details, get everything placed were you want it! Generally, the lines of each item will point back towards the horizon line, but they can have different perspective points.

Generally you would want to clean it up and get your room completely sketched before doing the lineart. I tend to combine the steps (not recommended)

Lineart

I've mentioned how I do this before. Closer objects have thicker lines and more detailed inside. Further objects have thinner lines and less detail. I didn't quite achieve that balance with the image below, but it's close enough.

Colours and Shading will have to be a separate post. In the meantime, I highly recommend the book "Color and Light" by James Gurney. I used to borrow it from my local library and a good chunk of my knowledge was learned from it :)

A couple cars art tips I’ve learnt from doing Pixar cars fanart

1. If you really wanna get facial expressions right (atleast in my case this worked) take a picture of yourself doing the facial expression, then essentially slap that onto your art.

2. Sedans are fun to draw! And they’re good practice! It helps you get a feel for more rounded out cars instead of blocky ones

3. If you wanna make an environment, (this worked for me atleast) model a crude replica in an online web based modeling software (I used tinkercad!)

4. Don’t just draw cars! You should also draw planes, trains, boats, submarines, etc!

5. If you’re making a character, try to make a full 360 ref sheet!

6. Don’t focus on making your art look as good as others, focus on having fun while doing it. That’s helped me so much.

7. Always try to do more dynamic poses! Don’t just do one constant pose!

8. Study how a car gestures. I recommend rewatching the cars/planes movies and paying close attention to how a character gestures!

9. Make sure to compact every car a little! It makes a character more appealing if they don’t look exactly like their real world counterpart!

10. Read the art of cars 1, 2, 3 & the art of planes! Looking at how the professionals do it can help!

11. This video has helped me understand different car types well!

Flickering Lights

Demon Alastor x Human reader fic? ON IT. I'm so siked to make this a series and I hope who reads this enjoys this as much as I do. I wanna get into writing. (I don't write, I draw) and I was thinking of making a longer fic, the details were so hard to piece together. I really enjoy the concept of demon Al with human reader. So here we go!

Chapter One: Moving in

New Orleans, Louisiana

1946

Where wandering spirits were said to roam, walk and explore more frequently, being an area where people would find it easier to communicate with them, or so you were told. You were convinced it's utter nonsense to be completely honest. The whole notion of spirits was so far fetched you just couldn't bring yourself to even fathom them. Though not opposed to being proved wrong.

It's been years, saving for a house. Your apartment was small, cheap and far too crowded with furniture and items you just can't let go of. From a suffocating apartment to a house. You were practically buzzing from excitement. Like, literally almost shaking.

A new chapter in your life.

When you walked in, you suck air through your teeth in anticipation, the cool air hitting your teeth invigorating you, fingers fumbling with the old metallic keys that jingled in response, finally able to slot the correct one in the door and push open the dark wood hastily, the hinges swinging and the door practically flying.

You winced at the loud thud when it slammed on the white painted brick wall. Taking a few deep breaths, you decided it was best if you didn't wreck your new house on the first day. You think you would actually cry if you did, and you were not willing to test that theory. Checking the wall where the door hit with a small grimace of anticipation, you close the door behind you, relieved to see the wall is fine, your face relaxing again as you take yet another deep breath through your nose.

House tour!

Kicking off your shoes at the entrance, you begin wandering from room to room, you take in the spacious kitchen and living room. Though it lacked a certain homey touch. But you were aware why. There was no furniture after all. You had a vision for the house. Just had to wait 3 days before you could make it happen and the furniture would arrive. You had big plans, that did not pair well with your lack of patience. You already had multiple shitty sketches of how you roughly wanted each room to look. The furniture is all you need, it'll arrive soon enough. Hopefully.

You're going to need to find a way to pass the time.

First things first, you still haven't explored the upstairs! Running your hand gingerly along the wooden railing as you hop upstairs, the hard floor creaking occasionally under your feet every few steps, you take a sharp left and step into the master bedroom. It was massive. You feel a grin etch at your face as you peek your head inside. You're definitely getting a king sized bed. With a nod you left the room, confident you were going to be a pro napper at least a month within getting your new bed.

You open the door to the bathroom. Spacious enough, room for a decent sized tub and shower. Although you never really saw the point in baths if you wanted to get clean. You step out and look into the spare bedroom. Maybe a potential study? That or the attic. You always were sure that the environment can heavily affect the quality of ones work.

Was such a big house going to make you feel small? Possibly alone? You scoffed to yourself. Who cares when you have such a house?! Expensive too. Ho ho you were going to have fun "subtly" showing off this house to your friends.

With a quick, dismissive peek to the spare room you turn on your heels, going up the stairs to the attic with cautious steps, the worn wooden panels making such loud noises in retaliation to your steps that you were afraid that they would give in. Your hand gently opens the rattly metallic doorknob and open the door, squinting only to see a small switch on the side of the door. You flick it on and hear the buzz of a weak warm light turning on above you, fully illuminating the room the best the small warm light can.

First thoughts? Dusty. Very Dusty. Every box, book and the long desk and chair at the end of the room practically black and gray from the abundance of dust. A sigh escaping your lips, realising just how long you were going to be cleaning for, a task you were not mentally prepared for yet. Making your way to the desk, you approached a large wooden desk, most of the surface blocked by a large panel with knobs, switches, dials and little doodads that slide up and down. The sliding doodads having small, mini light bulbs at the top of each. You look at the corners and edges of the panel, looking for an on switch or something.

Nothing.

It was probably unplugged?

Nevertheless, as foreign as the panel seemed to you, a surge of determination drives through you to figure it out. It seemed expensive. Whoever used this probably cared deeply for it, the text of the brand faded, showing the love and use the panel had been provided with. If it was so well used, you had to figure out just why it was loved so much.

To begin, you had to figure out just what it is. Turning it on seemed like the obvious option.

Crouching under the table to look to where the cables lead, you notice a microphone on the floor. Wrapping your hand just above the flat base of the microphone, feeling the coolness of the metal and the sandy texture of the dust between your skin and the metal, you try to lift it. You were suprised to find your hand faltering slightly at the sheer weight of the microphone, dropping forward onto your knees to provide a better position to pick it up in, using both hands to stand up and set it in front of the panel with more ease. It wasn't that heavy. But you didn't want to drop it. Wasn't this supposed to have headphones...?

Once more, you go down on all fours, looking under the desk, when no sign of somewhere to turn on the panel or headphones appears, you circle round to the back of the desk, finding a wire and an unplugged plug. With a small huff that caused far too much dust to fly in the air, triggering a cough from you. Slotting the plug in the panel above you hums to life and flickers on once more. A small hushed yes emerges from you as you slowly stand up, brushing the dust from your knees, then your hands.

You walk back in front of the desk, flipping some random switches for the hell of it, satisfying metallic clicks and clanks as a result of your tampering. Then proceeding to tap the microphone, you blow on it to rid it of the pesky dust, stepping back to let the dust fall.

You took a moment to appreciate just how expensive this radio setup must have been, so big and complicated it made your mind whirl just trying to decipher what each control did. You brush away some more of the dust from the panel, running your finger between the buttons, trying to look for labels, or some sort of guidance, only to find them worn out, white writing so etched and scratched at on the metallic reddish-brown surface that it was unreadable. A soft smile tugging at your lips in realisation of just how loved this equipment really was.

You’ve seen the basics of what a radio setup should look like, without having to remember the separate into bitty details of the control. Panels, a microphone. Where were the headphones? You look below the desk, bending at an uncomfortable angle to the shelves situated under the left of the desk.

Nothing.

Not like you could broadcast anything even if you wanted to. Why do they use the headphones? To listen to the sound of their own voice? How proud and snobby must one be to love their voice that much? An audible scoff from you. You know you wouldn’t be able to put up with anyone of the sort.

Using both hands, stabilising the microphone properly, you pick it up, with a smart smirk, looking at the empty wall you begin speaking to your imaginary viewers, mocking the accent radio people had to use to the best of your ability. “Hello my dear viewers! Welcome back to my boring ass show, talking about shit that probably serves as background noise” A snicker escapes your lips as your smirks stretches wider in amusement, gently putting the microphone back down.

Eager to make your made up show more believable, you move away from the desk, eyes scanning the worn wooden panels of the floor. Remembering you looking earlier you let out a hefty sigh. Were you really going to spend hard earned money for a few minutes of make-believe mucking about like a child?

Oh definitely.

Lost in thought, still staring at the floor, chuckling in thought a distinct noise snaps you out of the haze of your mind.

Click

You look over your shoulder to the direction of the noise, the desk, trying to place the exact location.

Another click

It was from the panel? You turn back to the panel, looking down on the panel as the clicks increase in frequency, switches being flicked, dials turned. A particular pattern caught your eye being the fact that during the abundance of alterations to the controls of the panel, no knob or slide was altered twice, almost if it was altering itself the clicking now a steady rhythm. What a ridiculous idea, as clueless as you were about the technology you were almost certain it wasn’t that advanced.

The clicks slowly come to a stop, one last slider slowly going upwards to a certain line before it stops completely.

“Eager to hear my voice?” You mutter under your breath, a dial slowly turning, one of your eyebrows quirking up in response. Spirits and ghosts don’t exist.

There’s always a what if.

What if they do exist?

What if you’re the first to fully realise this?

What if you’re living a ghost story?

After all, things moving on their own in the dusty attic of an old house was never a good sign.

Yeah no who were you kidding.

But just to make sure.

You bend at the waist, your lips as inch away from the crosshatched metal of the top of the microphone.

“Can you hear me?” You say in a teasing low purr, holding back a laugh in your lungs, helping to alleviate the tension you’re beginning to feel rising up in you, pressing in on the sides of your head. Jokes always help. Well. Not always. However you can’t exactly help it either.

A flicker of the small light bulbs, emitting a warm light above the sliding controls. You couldn’t help but still be sceptical. Your voice now has a newfound edge, the whole situation making you uncomfortable.

“You- can?”

Another flicker from the same small light bulbs.

A nervous laugh rumbling from your chest.

You had to figure this out, because you wouldn’t put going insane past you. Maybe a break from the attic would be good. Probably buy some headphones. As unsettling as the panel is, having the set incomplete irks you unnecessarily, and it was an enigma you couldn’t help but feel determined to figure out.

Idk about y’all but when I think of the magma/aqua bases they’re nothing like the ones in canon.

When I imagine them the magma base it’s this big building built into a cliffside that extends into the cliff itself while the aqua base is this massive ocean liner. They wouldn’t really be hideouts if they were but I still like it for them. I also don’t think Archie would actually like using the ship because of the waste/pollution, and so it would just be this repurposed, permanently docked boat. He’d probably wanna have something more like a galleon but that would be too small to realistically house all the aqua members.

This was also practice for me with drawing environments/buildings and referenced the Queen Mary 2 for the aqua base

so he knows when to draw the line for you if your accidentally being overly helpful

he brings a sense of balance to you in that aspect

the fact that he can do that for you is comforting and makes you feel protected

which Zoro is protective of you because of how naive you are

Zoro is very wary of strangers for you

your too sweet and assume that person is just having a bad day or that’s they’re natural face

but behind you is your big scary dog (zoro) who is glaring daggers at the person he knows actually has an evil intent towards you

Zoro is there most of the time so he doesn’t let people take advantage of you

but the times he isn’t around?

once he finds out he gonna slice that person into dice and make them return whatever they had you get them, etc

he doesn’t it like it at all and can immediately tell when someone is trying to get over on you

After the situation is handled he drags you away (getting you two lost) and says

“Seriously! You needa be more careful y/n!”

he doesn’t really notice how down you are for a while

until he turns around to ask you something and you sorta have this sad puppy look on your face

”what’s wrong with you?”

he’s not gentle about it or anything but he does care

when you tell him it’s because your sad that everyone your kind to betrays you his protectiveness heightens

”what do you wanna impress those people for when you have the world's greatest swordsman..”

he kinda muttered it to himself

but you heard and immediately perked up

you clang onto his arm and walked all the way back to the sunny like that

I actually wanna start writing esp about mullet!stan but it feels so overwhelming to start. any tips for newbies? what's your process?

OMG THANK YOU SWEETHEART!!! and ty for giving me the chance to chat!! honestly im a bit afraid my advice might not be super useful to you, but i tried my best to organise my thoughts while writing this. i really hope it helps you at least a little bit ♡

now i absolutely believe mullet Stan is a traumatised, hungry, starved guy, emotionally and physically. he's got daddy issues, trust issues.... all the issues. and i love to write him with that dark humor and those suicide jokes, because well, i’m sure he’s thought about it at least once. i mean c’mon, he literally said his life was worthless before Mabel and Dipper came along. there's so much pain in his past that it’s like a defense mechanism to cover it up with that dark humor. i write him like that because, for me, it feels real. that kind of humor is his way of coping

so if i were to give him more details, id focus on his physical state. scratches, scars, bruises, a constant hunger, stomach growling. it's important to show him as a survivor, but someone who's constantly running on empty. maybe adding physical discomfort to his scenes because it reflects his inner turmoil, things like him being shaky when he’s hungry, being quick to snap when he’s in a bad mood, constantly messing with his hair, or his eyes might dart around nervously when he’s lying.

as for writing in general, daydreaming and listening to music are HUGE inspirations for me :) when it comes to Stan, ive been inspired a lot by tv girl. i know, i know.... it's me projecting one of my fav bands onto my comfort character, but ehh it just works for me. so yes, LISTEN TO THE SONGS! CREATE ENTIRE PLAYLISTS FOR UR CHARACTERS!! it'll help you paint the scene^^

if i need to write a dialogue, i talk to myself out loud, it helps me figure out how character would react to smth. i also try to imagine their facial expressions when talking irl. it’s weird, but it works for me! i get to know the character better that way. getting into their head helps me figure out how their words are supposed to sound. that's the beauty of writing, honestly. that's what i love the most: you really have to understand the character, not just in terms of their actions but their REACTIONS. their own perspective on the situation. the way this exact character sees the world, and how affects how they view others

so yes, i think what's really important is getting into the character's head. showing how they think about situations and other characters. it can be difficult because their thoughts WON’T always align with your own. you have to be able to think from the character’s perspective, even if it’s vastly different from your own opinion. that way, it will create inner conflict between how a character feels and how they really express those feelings, it can make them more relatable

nature descriptions are something ive been really into lately, especially when it comes to forests. ive been practicing this a lot, and it’s one of my favorite methods (can i even call it this way if it's just smth i usually do) to set the atmosphere in my scenes. i live near a forest, so i just go outside and start OBSERVING. you wouldn’t believe how many details you can pick up when you just sit still and let your mind wander. the color of the sky, the sounds of animals, even the texture of the ground beneath your shoes. and when you're writing, you can draw on those sensory details to make the scene feel more immersive. it’s one of my fav ways to build atmosphere. atmosphere is so important in any scene, and nature descriptions are a subtle way to reflect a character's mood or mindset. the environment mirrors characters emotions

when it comes to drama or angst, i absolutely love the unreliable narrator genre. its a great way to really dig into the messiness of a character’s mind. having a narrator who doesn’t always tell the truth or who interprets situations through a biased lens adds intrigue to the story. it’s a tool for showing that sometimes, what a character thinks is happening isn’t really the full picture. this kind of narration allows for more complexity, because you get to explore what the character believes VS the actual reality of the situation

finally, if you have an idea stuck in your head but can’t develop it into a full fic, just write the scene out in draft form first. don’t worry about the structure / details. just get it down on paper. it’s important to let yourself be messy at first. once you have that initial scene, go back to it and think: what can i add to this sentence to make it more vivid? or what can i remove to make it tighter? ask yourself how can i make this feel more alive? and then you can continue with that process for every sentence until it starts to flow. synonyms help a lot here too, like finding the right word to replace something that feels flat. you might not know where the story’s going at first, but by the time you’ve polished those little sentences, the direction will start to form

but if you don’t end up with a full fic right away, that’s totally fine. some of my fav things are just mini atmospheric drabbles, without needing a full explanation. not everything has to be a long, fully explained story. sometimes just capturing a feeling or a situation in a few lines is really enough. don't feel pressured to flesh everything out if you don't feel ready to

another important point, write the way you like. no one should impose their style or rules on you; the key is to feel the character and be honest with yourself about what you're writing. and don't be afraid to experiment!

and.... honestly, i think the best tip i can give is: don’t overthink it. (coming from someone who is constantly overthinking till anxiety). just write for yourself first, not for anyone else :)

the proxies are slashers— murderers. psychopathic, deranged men that are hardly short of completely and utterly insane. their sanity-if they have any- is practically none besides possibly a sliver of humanity. if anything, they aren’t even men— they were resurrected from the pits of hell itself and placed on this god forban world. the atrocities that these men have commited rightly earns them the title of not men— but demons. their sinful actions could never be erased, not even if they bathed in the waters of Babylon. the screams, cries, the sobs of their victims as they carry out their orders doing god knows what to them, will forever be ingraved into their very being. not even god can save them from their damnation— if anything god is laughing.

SANITY IS NOT SOMETHING OF LUXURY FOR THE PROXIES—

it’s something that fought for. everyday, it’s a constant battle for control—the continuous thirst to satisfy the need to kill. not to mention the the operators hold on their minds, making them carry out heinous missions consisting of nothing but death and blood. their minds are plagued with nightmares of what they have done, on repeat like a broken record, replying over and over. yet, behind the insanity, the malice, the control over their minds, they have regained just a sliver of sanity. it’s not like they want to kill—but they have to. for the operator… for this urge. little by little, they begin to feel like an actual human being. but it’s not like you know anything.

TOBY ERIN ROGERS—

is the most far gone. since the operator took over his mind at such a young age without much resistance , he has the pleasure of sculpting toby’s mind into the perfect cast. despite the most—insane, he’s the one that hangs onto his sanity the strongest. almost like he’s able to flip it on and off like a switch. yet, the line between sanity and insanity draws very thin, so he can’t help it when… it slips sometimes.

Self-Destructive Tendencies: Toby's self-destructive tendencies, which are often associated with his character, could negatively impact the relationship. This is either emotional or physically. He may engage in self-harm or reckless behaviors, disregarding the well-being of you and causing them emotional distress and constant worry.

Emotional Instability: Toby's own emotional instability could create an unpredictable and volatile environment within the relationship. His mood swings, anger outbursts, and tendency to lash out verbally or physically could cause you to constantly walk on eggshells.

Explosive Anger: Toby may have anger management issues that result in explosive outbursts. He might have difficulty controlling his temper, leading to verbal or even physical aggression toward his partner. This behavior creates an environment of fear and intimidation.

well, he certainly wouldn’t go far enough to hurt you, no, never. he is specifically always careful not to harm you, especially during sex. but that wouldn’t mean that he would hurt you emotionally or mentally. his favorite punishment is ignoring you. he’d shun you for days on end in your shared apartment, just to teach you a lesson which is very rare. physically, he treats you like a delicate glass doll that could break at any moment. during sex, it’s almost like he’s afraid to touch you. he doesn’t want to corrupt you like the way he is… he wants to preserve your innocence, and your being, and because of that, he would do anything to protect you. anyone who would ever do you wrong would soon come under his hatchet in the most painful way imaginable.

Dark and Evil level: 6/10, Moderate, just "protective"

TIMOTHY WRIGHT(MASKY)—

is in a constant fight for control, more so than the other proxies. In Marble Hornets, it is referenced that he may have Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). because of this, he comes into the separate entity known as Masky during blackouts. the operator has stalked timothy ever since he was a child and anyone else he came in contact with. the operator is setting his sights on timothy so young he can influence him just enough to do his bidding. of course, timothy hates the operator and works against him, but after so long, after all the pain and blood, he’s just too tired to fight back anymore. Masky, hates this. he hates that timothy gives up too quickly. during missions, a blackout is typically triggered, giving Masky complete control. and so soon enough Masky became tired as well. and then killing became second nature.

Controlling Behavior: Tim, overwhelmed by his own insecurities and paranoia, becomes possessive and controlling in his relationship. He constantly questions and monitors your actions, isolates them from friends and family, and exhibits manipulative behavior to maintain control.

Emotional Withdrawal: Tim, due to his secretive and guarded nature, may struggle with opening up emotionally to his significant other, that being you. He might withdraw from sharing his thoughts and feelings, leaving you feeling neglected or shut out.

Jealousy and Possessiveness: Tim's loyalty and protectiveness towards his friends, particularly towards Jay, might manifest as excessive jealousy and possessiveness in a romantic relationship. He may feel threatened by your interactions with others and attempt to control or isolate you.

Neglecting Emotional Support: Tim's own emotional struggles consume him, leaving little room for providing adequate emotional support to his partner, you. not without reason. mentally or emotionally, timothy understands human emotions, despite not having any himself. yet, when he’s around you, everything changes. suddenly, he can feel again, suddenly, he has the strength to fight back. you are everything to him. the only good in this hell-bent world. he needs you, and he can’t let you leave him. so you can’t blame him when he starts chewing nicotine gum, “claiming to quit cigs.” you can’t blame him when he stops taking his gum out when he kisses you, “he forgets to.” you can’t blame him when suddenly all you want to do is kiss him. but it's not enough, no, no, no. he needs to make sure that your, 're addicted to him, completely and utterly infatuated with him. so, you can't blame him when he starts wearing nicotine patches, "the gum just wasn't working." you can't blame him when he starts placing the patches on you when you're sleeping next to him. you cant blame him when you practically breakdown when he leaves you, only for a few hours. you cant blame him when you feel a pinch on you arm during sex, when he stuck the nicotine patch into your arm without you seeing, saying that "oh darling its nothing." you can't blame him when you've become addicted to his presence and cock. no you don't understand, you really just can't blame him, he wants to keep you safe, really, he promises.

Dark and Evil level: 8.5/10, Very high, obsessive and insane.

BRIAN THOMAS (HOODY)—

has the most grip on reality. like tim, he has blackouts to which he comes into the separate being known as “Hoody”. also like Tim, he hates the operator. at first, he resisted, refusing to carry out those abominations; its heinous fantasies of mass destruction. except he was more willing than his counterpart, timothy. brian is calculating, he's a smart guy, he understood what would happen to him if he disobeyed the operator. the most excruciating torture that anyone has ever gone through. proxy brainwashing is no joke. he's not stupid, so that's why he's played the long game. do the operator's bidding until he's able to conjure a plan, it'll only be for a few, just until he can figure out how to get out of this hell space. soon "a few" turned into months. soon "months" turned into years. then suddenly he stopped keeping track. and then, he started to enjoy it.

Isolation and Control: Brian might isolate you from your friends and family, attempting to control who you interact with and where you go. By limiting your support networks, Brian exerts more control over their life, making it challenging for you to maintain independence and make your own decisions.

Difficulty Opening Up: Brian/Hoody's burden of guilt and emotional turmoil might make it challenging for him to open up and share his vulnerabilities. This could create a one-sided dynamic in the relationship, with you having to provide emotional support without receiving reciprocation, potentially leading to resentment and emotional imbalance.

you are the one thing that is keeping him sane. so don't even think about leaving him. you wouldn't get the chance anyways. your everything that he's ever wanted, there is not a chance in hell that he's gonna have you slip through his fingers. he can be mean sometimes, but he doesn't mean it, it just slips out! typically when he gets back from "work", he's aggravated, its like he's a different person. he's cold, calculating, a robot practically; so you cant blame him when he needs something to release his sexual frustration. he just loves pleasing himself inside of you, he loves the way your body reacts to his corruption. now since your body is "bound" to him, he still needs to take extra precautions to keep you from leaving... specifically, brian will pit you aganist your friends and anyone close. pointing out how your friend's remark was passive-aggressive, pointing out details on how your friends "don't care about you, how they will never care about you, how he is the only person that will ever truly care about you. of course, he leaves you at least one friend, maybe two if he's feeling generous, he doesn't want you to go insane after all.

Going to start working on chapter 6 of BTB next week. This will be a fun chapter to draw for me. Lots of elements in it that I find enjoyable to draw.

In theory this should also be a quicker chapter to draw. But in practice... we'll see. Depends on the direction I wanna take a specific environment, artistically.

I also consider chapter 6 the midway point in the story (even though I think I'll break certain chapters up, making the total probably 15 instead of 12).

...could I prod for you to write out some of your thoughts on Nick´s ¨perfect bf¨ behavior then? (: just wanna hear them

i'm always willing to be prodded. this is a long one so buckle in. so nick's perfect bf behavior actually stems from the fact that nick is an emotional perfectionist. i feel like because we see charlie displaying more of the traditional perfectionist traits (and how that ties into his OCD), i feel like sometimes the fact that nick is also a perfectionist but in a different way gets overlooked in canon and among the fandom. i'd also like to state that i think charlie being a traditional perfectionist and nick being an emotional perfectionist is a big part of why their relationship works as well as it does but it's also why things can become volatile for them. it's a double edged sword for sure but i think these traits draw them to each other and i just wanted to get that bit out of the way first. what do i mean by emotional perfectionist?

for this post we're going to use this working definition to define emotional perfectionism: the practice of holding yourself to an unrealistically high standard for how you feel now, arguably both nick and charlie do this, however i think nick has been doing it a lot longer than we see in canon (reminder that we do not know MUCH about nick except for what Charlie learns about him bc a majority of HS is in Charlie's pov) nick is a character who wears his heart on his sleeves and goes to great lengths to communicate his feelings. we see this when nick and charlie kiss that first time and he shows up in the rain and literally starts blubbering because he's confused, but he's still in love and he knows that but being queer obviously challenges everything he previously knew about his identity.

and this continues! but what do we see between that and charlie's mental health decline? we see nick berating himself for his negative feelings. when he punches harry, for example, even though it's deserved we see in his face that he instantly regrets it.

nick is very emotionally mature for his age, to a degree that is leaps and bounds above basically... everyone else around him except for tara and elle. so why is nick an emotional perfectionist? my theories are the following:

lingering trauma from his parents' divorce

david being david (i.e david being the messy child so nick internalizing the fact that he needed to not be like that from a young age)

his toxic masculine environment (david, his father, and rugby, going to an all boy's school, etc.) a combination of all of these factors is more likely but as a child of divorce twice over, i can tell you that NOTHING makes you emotionally mature faster than watching your parents divorce even if the divorce is amicable. Now, I can't say anything with 100% certainty because even in canon, Nick does not talk much about about the nature of his parents' divorce or anything and its probably bc it is not exactly story relevant. it is however! character relevant. even if nick was never therapized by sarah and i seriously doubt he was, he very clearly struggles with having any feelings that aren't positive ones. Case in point, in the t.v show when Nick tries to come out at the bonfire, and he fails, he punishes himself for not keeping the "promise" he made to come out, when charlie tells him that he didn't promise, and further reassures him that it's okay if he's not ready (even though we the audience and nick even knows this hurts him), like nick is very clearly hurt by the fact that he could not do this thing that he knows both he and his boyfriend want. This sort of continues on the Paris trip, and even though they promise to tell each other all their shit, Nick... doesn't actually keep up his end of the promise because shortly after, Charlie's mental health nose dives and his priority became keeping his boyfriend alive. I think an aspect of HS that gets glossed over is how traumatizing it can be to be dating someone going through what Charlie does. "Love can't cure mental illness" "that's a lot to put on the shoulders of a sixteen year old.". For the BRIEFEST moment when Nick and Charlie are together, they communicate well, they get each other, but that goes up in smoke as Charlie's ED worsens. IT IS NOT HIS FAULT, obviously. But what does Nick do during this time? He becomes an emotional rock for Charlie. He tries to support him, he tries so very desperately to be there for his boyfriend in every way he can be until it's literally not enough. How is Nick supposed to go to Charlie about shit when Charlie is going through worse things? That's how Nick sees it. So now we're onto the present point of the comic. Nick is the PERFECT boyfriend. This is how he copes, this is the mask he is putting on so other people don't see the fact that he doesn't really know who he is or what he wants. On paper, Nick wants to be with Charlie forever. That is his most SECURE thing right now, so of course he'd latch onto that and start being the perfect boyfriend everyone expects him to be especially since others have pointed out that he's "useless" without Charlie. What a thing to be told, you know? I'd be insecure too. Nick doubles down. Why? Because if other people perceive him as perfect, they don't go beyond that, this is his experience with life before Charlie. Everyone just knew him as the Rugby King before, in the mini comic he talks about the fact that he doesn't even have his "friends" around his house, nor does he want to see films with them-- in 12 year old terms, I see this as Nick's way of stating he does not want these people to see who he actually is less they make fun of him too.
