I recently started watching Heroes (2022) (please no spoilers I’m only on ep 13!) and the whole way through me and my friend have just been adding people to the polycule.

挽留 is such a good phrase, but so hard to translate succinctly - it means to retain in the sense of keeping, to have and to hold, but also has a wistful sense to it, to wish to have, to ask to stay. It's not a forceful retention, but something soft, wishful, heartbreaking. Because the preface of 挽留 is that the other person intends to leave. You only use the term 挽留 when you need to do something (persuade/urge/request) to keep the other person.

挽留天涯挽留人，挽留歲月挽留你

天涯 is the wide wide world

歲月 is the passage of time

None of these are things that can be kept.

From the beginning, the wielder of the Wanliu Sword knows there are things and people that can't be kept, can't be held, can't be retained. But he will still try.
