Do you guys also have actors you loved/were vowed by in one drama and then it’s never replicated before or since? I always wonder how that works - if someone is always bad or always good, that’s self explanatory. Sometimes actors improve or, unfortunately, get worse as they stop caring. And a lot of actors are uneven - sometimes good and sometimes bad depending on direction and whether the character is something that works for them, co stars etc. But I always wonder about actors where I loved them in one thing and they never worked me in anything else. I wonder how that happens.

Examples - Peng Xiaoran in Goodbye My Princess was glorious and to me like a piece of background wood in everything else. I adored Dylan Wang in CLJ like mad despite not caring for him before and remember thinking he’s had a breakthrough but every other drama he’s been after left me cold about his performances again. Gong Jun - sublime in WoH and gorgeous wallpaper as far as I am concerned in everything else since. Song Weilong was good in Go Ahead and Hu Yitian in Defying the Storm - rock solid. Everywhere else for those two? Acting summed up as “tall and good-looking.” Yang Chaoye was fine in Heroes and unwatchable in anything else (tho there like with PXR the explanation is probably Li Muge) Etc etc

Honestly in some ways it’s worse than an actor whose performance never works for me - because it raises my hopes up that maybe this will stick even if not consistently then this this this time. And it never does (fwiw I’ve given up on the two ladies on this list, HYT and SWL (tho that man is not offensive to watch and so gorgeous I still look forward to his stuff) but please Dylan and Gong Jun, get it together!)

February CPNs

hello! it’s that time of the month again that i compile the sweets brought to us by the boys! this month started out very quiet but in this fandom will mean that things will take a turn in the next week/s. you just never know what will happen next. i have added some commentary here on certain incidents that i didn’t talk about separately on my blog to have “bonus content” for this round-up.

• XZ’s GQ cover and collaboration sweets + additional ones connected to fake rumor

• not really cpn, but our boys continue to make it in the weibo hot search trend report - i still hate sina weibo but i understand how it’s relevant for them.

• XZ’s wedding suit from the AV festival. yes, this was made for him but we just had him wear that white backless wedding suit by jacquemus for GQ and now this? hmmmm. me thinks he has a preference? lol. he prefers white and that’s fine, but the choice of what looks like a wedding suit is 👀. i am on standby, let me see if this continues.

pair it off with WYB! and it’s perfect. tho i would prefer it if they are both in white. 🤍

• yibo’s watch and gg’s GQ props connection the number 91 and 3.

• chinese new year candies - gg’s weibo post, wyb’s red envelope cover clues etc

• tencent video posting their new year vcr so close together! they could have easily posted it one after the other but maybe they didn’t want some solo fan drama. i’m happy that bobo continues to collab with 10c, and ZZ is not exclusive to 10c anymore— so hopefully this means in the future they can work on a project together <3

• clowning over XZ’s song in spring festival gala as you wish + same composer as wyb’s singles and how wyb was listening to a song from this artist lately.

• this parallel between their looks. it’s not just their characters that match each other, but their outfits from certain events. so classy!

but i think this one is the best. seeing them get recognition for their acting in the past few months has been very rewarding. all the hard work and challenges are bearing fruit. remembering them talking about wanting to become professional actors and really take that path — studying and dreaming together. now here we are 🫶🏼

• a cute tidbit, but the cat xz is playing with is called xiao wang. that’s because on it’s back looks like the character for wang! what a coincidence!!!! 🥹

• Bottled Joy stirring the CPN pot again by posting this on 2/13. As You Wish. The context of the post is that, as you wish — fans can get these wallpapers and photos of Bobo. but it’s a coincidence cause it’s the english title of the song GG sang @ BRTV Spring Festival Gala. 👀 the colors too, white and silver which is the same color combination of GG’s outfit. This may be meh to some, but knowing Bottled Joy’s cpn history, you can’t blame us.

• Golden Hour and Eason Chan songs @ yibo’s playlist

• Small weekend roundup - includes mention of asian pop magazines where the boys are both mentioned, supplement to xz using tickets for his spring festival photos last year as support of bobo’s movie and the phone card case appears.

• Rumor of Wang Yibo being in Hengdian - one / two / three ( i feel like this one is up there with the leica camera and gg’s bday cpn but this one is more risky on their part. as i have said in my posts, what is important is they are safe and happy. it’s their personal life. their relationship is between the two of them. as cpfs, we should be protecting them and not be people they are wary of. if we are not careful, we are no different from ss and yxh. )

• On 2/20, Yuehua & YBO have posted about the slander recently going around related to WYB and that they have reported it to the police. This went really high on HS and was widely talked about, even Du Hua reposted and reacted to it. Hours later, XZS has posted their own reminder to fans in relation to people disturbing his drama filming. What made it more important is that XZ reposted it too and put in a very firm reminder to everyone.

to give some context, the horrible rumor regarding WYB was spread around by mostly XZ fans. There was a melon that said “X” has STD and then toxic people started saying it’s WYB ( cause toxic xz fans doesn’t want it linked to XZ because of the clue given so they throw it to WYB. i know it sounds stupid, but it’s actually a common tactic done by both sides ) and even fabricated some photos. another actor, xukai was also implicated and he also reported to the police.

so this can be read by so/os as XZ&XZS trying to cover up for the toxic solos and what they did. i get why other people will think that and i personally wanted them to address the bad things his solos do. however i also understand why xz and his team can’t “betray” the solo fans. that’s just how it goes. however, in cpf interpretation, this is XZ’s way of taking away the heat from wyb and a way of putting a stop to the conversations about that horrible lie. it worked in a way that it went on HS, but not as high as WYB’s. I was also surprised that XZ reposted it himself. i am aware that the leaks and everything else is a serious issue and XZ is someone who hates being a bother to the crew. but he usually doesn’t do this. he usually leaves it to XZS or the drama account. This tells me that he personally wants to lend his name and his weibo account, to get more of the heat. The last line he said can also be a message to his toxic so/os: respect others and respect yourself.

• On 2/20, there were tarot readings some BXGs have enjoyed. One is this that is a new year CP reading done on 2/4. What made fans 👀 are:

1. this card, where OP said it’s them being hand in hand and don’t get tired of each other. and in the background is a sacred building, which symbolizes them having a vow to each other.

more cpn was added into it when GG did MFW and people realized not to take this literally cause it could be representing the Duomo.

2. Here is the part that was v interesting to cpfs cause this person gave a prediction that followed what we cpn and happened in the next couple of days.

The two of them haven’t had many official activities recently. So from February 4th, there is a chance for the two of them to meet each other in the past few days. And as soon as the two of them meet, they won’t be going out. Yibo knows he is active but he will close up and be willing to hide at home for XZ.

this is so close to what we speculated! that they spent a quiet cny break together. 🥹🥹🥹

3. Next one is so on point it’s scary cause i have already discussed the bad rumor going around and was directed at WYB before this entry. OP was sort of right. tho i don’t know it this will be another hateful rumor, i hope not.

My prediction is that it will be in March 2024, around this time, I feel that WYB will have a a force of public opinion surrounding him. It's unfriendly to him. This power of public opinion including but not limited to WYB. If we use the 8 of Swords to understand the external environment, it is a relatively sharp. There is some public opinion about the two of them that may cause some trouble

If something happens to WYB, XZ will immediately rise up and have to rush out to protect him. XZ will work hard behind the scenes silently in his own way and are some practical actions.

I don’t think i need to further explain. It fits what happened in 2/20. 👁️👄👁️

4. WYB’s resources for 2024 will be very good. In the first quarter, the number of resources was not very large but the quality of the resources is very good. Then the Queen of Pentacles in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Queen of Cups.

For context: The Queen of Pentacles, therefore, depicts a certain level of success and prosperity. But the rabbit at the bottom cautions us that we should be careful of where we leap when we are chasing that success. Queen of Cups - Generally speaking, this is a positive card for both career and finances, suggesting you're "in tune with yourself, have a good work-life balance going on, and overall a positive job experience.

These have been sitting in my draft for more than two weeks. After last month's release of the character posters in the similar style, Three-Body Community's weibo released another batch of posters/wallpapers.

Again the Shiwang agenda is still here. Of course we are getting the most iconic church scene (the purple one), and then what I find amusing is the green one which is the scene where Shi Qiang followed Wang Miao to Yang Dong's funeral, and downright said to Wang Miao: "You look very handsome dress all in black." There are so many scenes to pick, and they just had to pick a scene like this lol!

Every single one of my letters is a snapshot, each a failure. Each boy was like a snowflake, beautiful, unique, and too soon gone. I have to admit that I was a coward. But you were different. That one summer three years ago changed me.

I was on an errand when you bumped into me, ice cream and all. Who would eat ice cream when it’s so cold outside? You. I stood there, in shock, the ice cream making my shirt stick to my stomach in the most uncomfortable way, watching your expression turn from amusement to apologetic.“Oh shit I’m so sorry.”

I stood there, at a loss of what to say. You stared at me, horrified, before scrambling to pick up the groceries that I had dropped and handed them back to me.

“I-know-I-ruined-your-shirt-but-like-I’m-broke-instead-I-can-teach-you-how-to-skate.” You declared in a rush, holding up a worn-up plain skateboard, youthful energy prominent in every single cell of your body, unlike me. I used to call you a giant baby all the time, and you would chuckle and claim that I was the grandma.

Maybe that’s why I wasn’t as hesitant as I should be.

“Why? I don’t like skateboarding.” I replied, wondering why a random boy you met in a park would be offering to teach a stranger how to skateboard of all things.

“You just seemed like a skater girl. Don’t ask me why. Anyways, you’ll change your mind after I teach you.” You stated with a smug undertone, as it was already accomplished, and that just further ruined the first impression.

Sending you a skeptical look, I asked, “Really?”

Tucking the skateboard under your arm, you answered, “You’ll be telling me how much you love me.”

How I wish that we could go back to that time, to a summer where you confessed and I was by your side. I went to find you the day before I was supposed to be heading back to university and asked you if you were willing to wait another year.

You said that you couldn’t, that it’s too hard.

I, in the rush and hurt of the moment, whispered, “I wish I never met you.” I didn’t turn around fast enough to miss the look in your eyes filled with utter betrayal and sadness.

I returned the next year, just a few months before my grandpa passed away, and asked him about a boy named Jeon Jungkook. “He’s at the hospital,” he said, and I felt my heart stop.

“He was hit by a car a few days ago and has been in a coma since the accident. Let me tell you, ever since last summer, that boy has lost the stars in his eyes. I betcha it was a girl who broke his heart…” Grandma rambled, completely unaware of the sound of my own heart shattering.

After I told the nurses I was your girlfriend, they let me in. When I found you in the hospital bed, you looked frail and small.

It’s been too long Jungkook, and you never liked to keep me waiting. I promise that if you wake up and I’ll never ask you to wait for me again. I’ll hold onto you and never let you go.

Favorite Scene in a BL

I Told Sunset About You, Episode 3. The smelling scene, (I am assuming like the other one that this gif is misattributed to Nini and is actually from @liyazaki)

This scene short-circuited my brain, changed my DNA, altered me at a cellular level. You got my messages about this scene, Benjamin. You know it made me tear at the curtains and eat the wallpaper. You know I spent hours just staring up at the ceiling. I watched this scene four times in a row and cried every time. I was transfixed. I barely breathed. The power, the magnetism, the pull. The way the tension builds, the lack of music, silence only interrupted by the sound of their breathing. The promised of how this could have progressed, if Teh didn't feel for breasts that weren't there. If Teh didn't slam a door down on his desire. You know I eat that shit for breakfast, that type of internal fight. That fight against what you want, what you need, what you crave. Teh can't accept quite yet what his feelings for Oh are, even as he is so clearly intrigued, drunk on Oh's scent, in love. Talk about power.

What do you think about love triangles in BLs?

I think to be a love-triangle there has to be a level of uncertainty as to who the main character is going to end up with. As such, I think there are honestly very few love triangles in BL, and even fewer that are well executed. I think the majority of "love triangles" I see in BLs tend to be unrequited loves rather than a love triangle. I feel like usually the main couple is never really interested in the side character that is pursuing them. I think I can probably count on one hand the number of actual love triangles in BL.

While I do think that Bas is kind of a victim of the narrative, and I didn't see a relationship between Bas and Oh going anywhere, based very much on how much Teh and Oh were both drawn to each other and capable of hurting each other. But Oh tried it, and I think Oh would have continued to try with Bas for quite some time.

Tony, Jean, and Kat was not a love triangle I particularly cared about, but I appreciated that there was just a casual inclusion of a character being attracted to multiple people, and engaging in physical intimacy with both people, having that attraction be confirmed by both people but still being rejected by Jean and then pursuing Kat.

Enemies to lovers all day, every day.

It's about the sexual tension! It's about the endless pursuit of one another! It's about the emotional complexity! It's about being doomed by the narrative, or rebelling against the narrative, or being changed for the better or the worse! It's about the seeing the worst parts, the broken parts, the angry, and hurt, and monstrous parts of people and loving them anyway. Enemies to lovers feels so queer to me, in the same way that loving Halloween feels so queer to me, in the same way that stories about monsters feels queer to me. It's something about being seen as inherently bad, irredeemable, villainous, or sinful, and being gifted love despite.

reading that very fun piece against queer presentism & thinking again about the idea of the literary canon

the main contentions in this piece are that queer writers ought to look for historical queer writing, and that there's a lot of it which is often & unjustly ignored, to our detriment. at least some of the problems the article writer is getting at seem to me to be historiographical, which is what i say about nearly everything. anyway it helpfully lists several things i'd never heard of, alongside some things i had. i am admittedly a lazy reader & as a result not at all well-read. most of my interesting or difficult reading was done in school, which i don't think is that uncommon.

you can kind of tell that this is common to some extent because on tumblr where there's a strong interest in evidence of historical gay people, there's a continual air of surprise around evidence of queer lives & a particular focus on arguing that certain people you've already heard of are gay (shakespeare was gay! fight your english teacher about it! keynes was gay! fight your econ teacher about it! they don't want you to know!!). i don't entirely disagree with this preoccupation—i spent my fair share of time arguing with teachers—but it seems kind of sad, honestly! as a dull & boring gay myself i like to hear about the less- and even non-famous historical gays. but more importantly there's more writing out there than they teach in school, & as various ongoing astroturf campaigns make unpleasantly evident, what makes its way into school libraries & onto school curricula is extremely political.

i guess this is the question i find most interesting. whence canons, wherefore canons, will we ever be done with them? probably the solution instead of long tumblr posts is to actually read a) more books and b) scholarship about those books, plus what other very clever people have said about canons, but i am simply not going to do that because my focus is shot & i am, anyway, a fool.

so a few things, i guess:

1. many people do most of their expansive reading & get a sense of what they like & what literary history looks like from school, which is a solid intention of high school & college literary survey classes.

2. these surveys tend to focus on a certain set of works, which are understood to be both good & influential or important, and are thus 'canonical.'

3. there's a lot of fighting about what goes or doesn't go in the canon or whether we ought to have a canon at all; the survey of literature with which one is usually presented in one's eleventh grade english class or one's required freshman english class or whatever tends to be eurocentric, white, male, & straight, which sucks

4. there have been various initiatives to open the canon, with mixed success; my own high school education was comparatively fairly wide-ranging (we read achebe, morrison, ondaatje, and wang wei, in addition to our shakespeare, steinbeck, and austen). but consider, e.g., 'the yellow wallpaper', which was not an enormous success in its own time but was successfully championed by feminist scholars of the 1970s, who argued that it reflects an important sort of 19th century women's writing. kate chopin, too, benefited posthumously from this activism. there are probably others whom i am failing to think of, due to knowing almost nothing about anything.

5. why not argue for expanding the literary canon? why not argue that some of these writers ought to be taught in school? i love the focus on the queer self-education, but why stop there? the piece includes a call to publishers (print these older works anew! make cheap editions, new translations, accessible anthologies!) but none to curriculum composers, who surely look for what is available but can also generate demand in a way which is miserably familiar to anyone who works in a library & abruptly finds themselves expected to produce >15 copies of some school book on no notice.

6. is it just passé now to talk about the canon? are we anti-canon? this seems kind of pointless to me because surely we are all still going to be (peripherally, at least) subjected to AP english & so on for several more years, & we may as well try to get the kids to read some interesting things. i don't really see how we could get out of The Canon, however limiting we find it; it seems kind of unavoidable to me that we should have some sort of list of widely-known, well-read literature which is generally understood to be good, useful, representative, or educational in some way.
