living a farmer's life with wanda

𐙚 wanda would start off every morning by brushing your hair. then you'd go off and feed your little bunnies.

𐙚 you were so adorable, the best part of wanda's morning was seeing how much joy your little pets brought to you.

𐙚 another thing which brought wanda joy was going flower picking with you. she'd dress the two of you in sundresses, braid your hair and put bows in them. god you looked so cute like that.

𐙚 the way your eyes would perk up when she found your favorite blue flower. or how'd you close your eyes, bring the flowers to your nose and just take in it's scent.

𐙚 one particular morning, wanda woke you up with blueberry pancakes, which was also your favorite. you woke up to her mixing the pancake batter.

𐙚 you were so darn sleepy, practically balling your fists towards your eyes. "ah. ah. ah." wanda shook her head, putting the bowl with mix down. she gently grabbed your hands and hummed softly.

𐙚 you took this as a sign to koala bear wrap yourself over her. she let out a quiet chuckle and brought her lips towards your forehead.

𐙚 which is what led you to your current situation. wanda had gone to the market and your tummy started to growl. wanda left you a note while you were asleep, saying she'd headed to the market because you were out of bread.

𐙚 you were not at all a good chef like wanda was. covered in flour from when the bag exploded on you and not knowing wanda's recipe, you were doomed from the start.

𐙚 the door knob rattled. oh no, wanda was home. she couldn't see you like this, you ran to your shared bedroom.

𐙚 'babydoll?" wanda spoke, her eyes scanning the room for you. she left the grocerys down by the door and her eyes met the mess you left in the kitchen. ah, now she sees what happened.

𐙚 she follows your flour footprints which led to the bedroom. "hey bunny, i'm back. are you hungry? did mommy forget to make you food before she left?" wanda tried to coax you out of the room.

𐙚 you sighed, opening the door. "oh baby... want mama to help you get cleaned up then fix you a bite to eat? does that sound good, my sweet girl?" wanda cooed, bringing a thumb up to your cheek. It swiped the layer of flour left on your cheek.

DEADPOOL WOLVERINE SPOILERS AHEAD. i loved how it felt like a comic movie. jokes were actually funny. action scenes were so creative. cameos were super cool. matthew macfadyen served, smashed, killed etc. i would define it as a tribute to fans. it's a solid 8.5 for me. but as someone who went to cinema wearing a fucking wanda t-shirt, i demand some fucking answers about that scarlet witch statue which i've fucking seen with my own two eyes and then i screamed out loud.

Hi I have seen some of your post about Wanda, Pietro, Billy and Tommy and I agreee that their Romani heritage has always been stronger and their culture. That said, I wanted to ask your oppinion abou the retcon. Do you think it´s better to leave it so Wanda and Pietro keep being completely Romani while marvel develops Magneto´s family with Anya and Lorna? or do you want the retcon changed?

Wanda and Pietro were "completely" Romani even when Magneto was canonically their birth father. This is not a question of fractions or percentages-- that's not how these things work.

I wrote this last week, and it pretty much sums up my feelings about the retcon:

So, as much as I think the retcon was bad because it fucked with continuity, and it broke them away from their Jewish background, I think it was better for their growth and their storylines— especially Wanda. Mutant drama was not serving these characters well, and it had not been for a very long time. There is a part of me that actually likes their new backstory more than the original. In the current version, Chthon and the Evolutionary prey on the Maximoff family specifically because they are Romani and they come from a particular Romani cultural tradition. Those themes about racism and the ways in which Wanda has been exploited and ostracized are able to be more literal now, which is good because modern writers are finally interested in having her face her traumas head-on and take back her power. That never would have happened if she was still being defined as a ~crazy~ mutant reality warper. Again, that doesn’t mean I think the retcon is okay.

The retcon never should have happened. It was an editorial intervention motivated entirely by an IP dispute between Fox and Marvel Studios. It undermined decades of continuity, particularly some of Wanda's most prominent storylines in the last 10-15 years. And yes, it constitutes Jewish erasure. That's a big problem.

It also took Wanda and Pietro out from under the shadow of House of M for the first time in over a decade, which directly led to better character growth, restored a lot of their dignity and agency, and allowed both characters return to center on what actually makes them interesting heroes and protagonists.* I like the characters that Wanda and Pietro are today, and those characters would not exist if the retcon hadn't happened.

Even Trial of Magneto-- which, for all its flaws, finally put the Decimation to rest and resolved Wanda's turbulent relationship with mutantkind-- probably would not have happened if not for the retcon. Wanda needed to be made external to the mutant world, and be given back her power and mastery as a witch, in order to return to X-Men comics as an agential character capable of doing what needed to be done.

In my opinion, the window of time in which Marvel could have reversed the retcon closed as soon they started establishing an alternative backstory. Doubling back again would just be too messy. I would rather get a few more years of consistent, actually good storytelling which serves Wanda and Pietro as characters, rather than circuitous continuity distortion.

For me, personally, things that make Wanda and Pietro interesting characters with interesting storylines are

Where they come from (Wundagore) and the things that happened to them there (Chthon, the Evolutionary, general racism and systemic violence)

They ways in which they are constantly ostracized, othered, and misunderstood everywhere they go, but especially in America. This may be attributed to mutant identity, to their race, to Wanda being a witch, or to Pietro being generally too weird and different because of how his speed powers work.

Their intelligence, worldliness and love of learning. Wanda and Pietro are both true polyglots and are both very studious despite their lack of formal education-- for Pietro, this is partially attributed to his speed, which allows him to study and master skills at prodigious rates. Wanda's just really smart.

Related-- Wanda's career as a witch. It's something she chose for herself, and it's something she mastered through study and practice. People forget this, but back in the 80 and 90s she was on her way to becoming a real expert in her field. I think we're going to see her at the top of her game in the new Scarlet Witch solo next year.

The cycle of loss, separation, and reunion that has followed the Maximoff family through each generation. This is a really rich vein of character pathos that a lot of readers seem to dismiss out of hand as ~crazy retcons~.

As a Romani reader, I also find that all of these elements become deeper and more resonant when placed in that context. I hope that more readers and writers will come to understand that one day, because it will not only help humanize these characters and give them greater poignancy, but also because I think it would help gadje see how to bring humanity and dignity to fictional Romani representations.
