Bartleby (1970)
"Just promise me that you'll start co-operating, and go over the accounts as required, and start being a little reasonable."
"At the moment, I'd prefer not to be a little reasonable."
#bartleby#british cinema#1970#anthony friedman#rodney carr smith#herman melville#paul scofield#john mcenery#thorley walters#colin jeavons#raymond mason#rosalind elliot#tony parkin#robin askwith#charles kinross#neville barber#hope jackman#christine dingle#john watson#roger webb#a strange curio of a film. updates Melville's short story from mid 19th century new york to contemporary London‚ and Bartleby's work from#scribe to accounts clerk‚ but generally this is a faithful adaptation; McEnery's Bartleby is slow and deliberate in movement and speech and#a reading of neurodivergence is almost unavoidable. slowly Bartleby begins to demonstrate a 'passive resistance'; he simply stops doing the#work assigned to him‚ but is so thoroughly polite about it that Scofield's nonplussed manager is stricken about how to handle his employee#and loathe to simply fire him. considering the time and place in which this was made‚ the temptation may have been to produce a satirical#study of counter culture in action‚ but Friedman (in his only feature) chooses instead to play it straight as a kind of unnerving character#study of an incomprehensible persona. like Bartleby‚ the film is slow and deliberate (sometimes torturously so) but always fascinating#the London of the opening shots‚ a mass of anonymous commuters moving almost as a single entity‚ looks disarmingly undated and quite#like the city today. not a hugely satisfying film but a deeply interesting one and with two superb central performances

Looking back on 2019 I decided to list a handful of political / alternative news websites rather than films, albums or books. In the UK the corporate media stooped to shocking new lows during our recent General Election campaign. Such dirty tactics are to be expected of conglomerates owned by the likes of Rupert Murdoch and his fellow right wing billionaires but this time around, previously ‘liberal’ outlets such as the BBC and Guardian also fully participated in the outrageous lies, smears and character assassination against the leader of the opposition Labour Party. The British population were now being forced fed the Establishment’s propaganda du jour from every possible direction. Personally I try to gather my information from as many alternative outlets as possible to contrast with the 24 hour corporate brainwashing we’re subjected to these days. I’ve listed just five sites from the dozens I regularly visit and although I certainly don’t agree with everything expressed on these sites I do feel that it essential that in supposed free and democratic societies we are at least exposed to a variety of viewpoints and opinions - rather than being trapped inside social media echo chambers in an Internet that is increasingly controlled and censored by sophisticated algorithms and where politically correct digital lynch mobs accuse anyone with an opinion that contradicts the official narrative of being a Russian agent! Anyway, a Happy New Year to you all and here’s hoping 2020 sets the new decade off in roaring style!

Weasel Walter
Composer/performer / label head https://weaselwalter.bandcamp.com/
2019 was far from my favorite year. Regardless, I managed to release not one, but two new double albums by The Flying Luttenbachers (as well as two European tours with the unit) in addition to the usual slew of improvised music gigs and releases, and co-ordinating and producing an archival release of vintage NYC weirdness (Ozone). I also rocked Mexico City with Lydia Lunch Retrovirus, played a ridiculous gig with Encenathrakh, and disbanded Cellular Chaos (for now, at least).
When I become obsessed (or re-obsessed with something), it usually leads to a ton of proselytizing Facebook status posts. Combing my 2019 posts, it seems that my musical obsessions this year weren't very highbrow. Ha ha ha. Yes, I'm super into Xenakis, Cecil Taylor and whatever else, but dumber music can supply great creature comfort, and I guess I needed that in large amounts, so that's what it was. Sometimes badass modernists have to take time out to stay in bed all day and read comics because it's a hard cold world out there.
Weasel Walter top 10 musical obsessions of 2019 1. Kid Creole and the Coconuts (1980-1985 era) 2. Redd Kross 3. The Saints "I'm Stranded" 4. Jane Aire and the Belvederes 5. Miles Davis 1972-1975 6. Khanate "Things Viral 7. Mandy Zone & Ozone "Live at Max's Kansas City 1981" 8. Mayhem "Grand Declaration of War" 9. Comedy Bang Bang Episode #554 w/ Middleditch, Sanz 10. Weezer "Pinkerton"
Weasel Walter worst thing about 2019
1. Windows 10

20 years of blogging at Boing Boing
Tumblr media
Twenty years ago today, Boing Boing became a blog. Mark Frauenfelder's first post linked to Street Tech, a now-dormant gadget blog. Now there are 160,000 more posts just like it and the impossible task of summarizing the best of them in yet another.
Founded as a print zine in 1988 by Mark and Carla Sinclair, Mark's personal retrospective posted earlier today is a must-read; following are a few of our greatest hits, proudest accomplishments, clickiest traffic monsters, and best features of all time.
Despite the tens of millions of words in our database – mostly wonderful things – it's oftentimes the shortest posts that get the most attention.
So it was with Xeni Jardin's Ralph Lauren opens new outlet store in the Uncanny Valley, a single-sentence reblog of a now-vanished post at another site highlighting the incompetently dysmorphic photomanipulations in one of the fashion house's ads.
Ralph Lauren tried to force us to remove the post, to no avail.
That wasn't our first rodeo, either. In 2008, were were sued by MagicJack, makers of a VoIP dongle, after criticizing its terms of service. We stood our ground and beat them in court. Ten years later, Playboy sued us for posting about someone else's uploaded cover collection, claiming that linking to things is a form of copyright infringement. We beat them too, with the help of able friends at the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
It's not all law and chaos, though.
Mark Frauenfelder says he's most proud of his two-part series on the fortified residential mailboxes of Los Angeles, Survival of the fittest mailbox and Fortified mailboxes, part 2. Readers, though, say his greatest gift to the world of letters is the gentlemen of Boing Boing.
A trilogy of Cory Doctorow's most incisive writing on technology, policy and freedom is found in Lockdown, based on his keynote speech to the Chaos Computer Congress in 2011, The Coming Civil War over General Purpose Computing, and Anodyne Anonymity. Also, would you just look at that banana. Furthermore, Christ, what an asshole.
David Pescovitz is a collector of unpopular culture with an affinity for haunted ontology, mall nostalgia and cryptids (more!, with a Grammy on the shelf for his part in reissuing the Voyager Golden Record.
But it's his touching obituary for Mark, his older brother, that will not be forgotten.
Xeni Jardin's posted countless articles about cutting-edge tech and light-hearted nods to the wonders of the web, and more seriously about politics, but it's her writing about cancer, hers and others', that sticks with readers. The Diagnosis; When life hands you cancer, make cancer-ade; Obamacare saved my life; Cancer and cannabis: How I learned to stop worrying and love medical marijuana; A medal for completing breast cancer treatment; and We should be worried that science has not yet brought us closer to understanding cancer.
Rob Beschizza's The Weird of Wendy Pini profiles one of America's most successful women cartoonists. His random generators include the Psygnosis Game Generator, the North Korean Press Release Generator and the Audiophile Hardware Review Generator. (For those who don't revile them, Rob's disturbing mouth-eyed politician shoops are collected in the gallery item Corinthian Leather). Fissure opens in Chess AI scene is a deep dive into a code-plagiarism scandal. He once reviewed a loaf of snot.
He eulogized his mother, Mandy Johnson, in 2016.
Did you know Boing Boing publisher Jason Weisberger was namechecked in a saucy romance novel?
Jason has also written obituaries for his close friends Molly, Lucy, Calliope and Nemo.
We published critical games writing under the aegis of Offworld, edited by Leigh Alexander: All the women I know in video games are tired and Why Silent Hill mattered. Zoë Quinn's call to creative arms, Punk Games, remains as relevant now as it was five years ago.
Laura Hudson's Women take a place at the pinball table is a deep look at a unique competetive area, complemented by her excellent reviews of games as different as Undertale — choose to kill monsters or understand them — and Bloodborne — In Bloodborne's brutal world, I found myself.
Our longtime science editor Maggie Koerth-Baker's analysis of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster was featured in the anthology The Best Science Writing Online 2012. Don't miss her profile of James Watson, either.
Though known for chaingun blogging, we pioneered the trend toward Fancy Lookin' Features on the web, such as Maggie's Cassini Trip Reset, highlighting the astonishing imagery from NASA's probe, and Rob Beschizza's Friendly Darkness in the Palace of Utopian Fantasy, linking rare threads of modern and Victorian fantasy.
Here's just a few more of the nice features we've published over the years:
1906: Vintage Photographs by Mike Shaughnessy Leaking Secrets, leaking Blood by Raul Gutierrez Death in Space, by Maggie Koerth-Baker Ghost Babies, by Mark Dery A Season in Hell, by Mark Dery Hajj for Heathens, by Omar Chatriwala Maps, by Simon Parkin
Other guests are too many to mention – there are more than five hundred contributors in our archives now – but they account for many of our finest posts. Among the best are Sawyer Rosenstein's Don't tell me the sky is the limit when there are footprints on the moon and the many annual iterations of David Ng and Ben Cohen's Halloween Candy Hierarchy.
Glenn Fleishman's Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto is typeset in the then-new Google typeface it was about, and What it's like to be on Jeopardy is about his brief but impressive stint on the game show.
Unseen World War I photos: German Trenches reveals a unique collection of photographs inherited by Dean Putney, our longtime developer, from his great-grandfather Walter Koessler.

I played the real wizard,” McKellen said. Beyond that, the role was much more demanding and the filmmakers likely wanted someone who was already established in the industry. Why did they change Voldemort actor? Due to Fiennes’ status, Bremmer believed he was replaced so that the franchise could add a bigger name. Paranormal Investigation – Parkin Massacre
Deanna Jaxine Stinson and I, did some outside of the perimeters paranormal investigation. The investigation took place outside of a home that has a terrifying history. The incident is right out of a horror movie. On November 7, 1973, 9 people were executed in a beautiful ranch style home in Acampo, California. This home is part of California’s beautiful wine country. In 1973, Walter Parkin owned this home. During that time Walter operated the main store in Victor, CA. When police found the victims, they were looking at the two Parkin children shot in the head and lying on the master bedroom bed. The 7 other victims were all slumped together in the master bedroom walk-in closet.
San Joaquin Sheriff Michael M. Canlis stated that this grisly sight “looked like the work of a madman”. The motive appeared to be greed. Whatever amount of money was in the safe at the United Market in Victor, CA is what lead the burglars to kill their victims. Roughly $4000.00 was taken from the safe.
Victims Identified: Walter Parkin – age 33; his wife, Joanne – age 31; their two children, Lisa – age 11; Robert age – 9; Debbie Earl – age 18 – babysitter; Richard A. Earl and Wanda Earl, the parents of the babysitter; Ricky Earl – age 15 the brother of Debbie Earl and Mark Lang – age 20, the babysitter’s boyfriend.
Whenever you have a horrible murder take place the residual energy of this murder or murders, as in this case will live on forever in the atmosphere. The residual energy will play over and over again.
Deanna immediately was able to pick up on the murders playing out like an endless loop. Deanna being a psychic medium needed a break, it was causing her to have shortness of breath. I drove her away from the area. After she gained her composure, I took her back to the murder site. I did some outside perimeter work and attempted many EVP sessions without any luck. Then finally on the 7th try I received an EVP of a little boy pleading….”please, please, time out!”
Carol Jenkins, employee of the Parkin store was the first one to discover the bodies. There are a lot of mysteries to this murder case and the author of this website mentions his suspicions, see here:jaimerubiowriter.blogspot.com/2018/05/remembering-victor-murders-of-1973.html I am not psychic, but I get this sneaky hunch that Carol Jenkins is somehow behind this and may have given the serial killers / burglars William Luther Steelman and Doug Gretzler the information about the safe in the store. The death of 9 people resulted stealing $4000.00 out of the safe. After they killed 9 people and robbed the safe, Steelman celebrated by eating Joanne Parkin’s birthday cake and making himself a drink.
Tumblr media
What prompted me to investigate this hideous murder location is when I received a phone call from Douglas Hennagan from Fresno, California. Douglas says that he is an independent ghost hunter and that he conducted his own outside perimeters paranormal investigation of the home and he felt like he was being shot in the head. This happened 3 times and on the 3rd incident, he actually fell to the ground. When he looked up he saw two homely looking guys and one of the guys had greasy looking hair. Both men looked evil. Douglas later found pictures of William Luther Steelman and Doug Gretzler and says that the two men looking down at him were Steelman and Gretzler. The man with the greasy hair was Steelman. Special Note: I believe that all of the haunting activity near this house is residual activity. I don’t believe it’s intelligent energy. Even when Douglas saw the two serial killers looking down at him, I believe that this is also residual. Douglas claims he is psychic and I feel that his energy may have attracted the negative residual energy and that is why it was centered on him.
Steelman and Gretzler are depraved serial killers that had no respect for life. They committed murders in Arizona before committing the Parkin Murders. If there is such thing as Hell, you will find the Orchard Road Mass Killers in the deepest bowels of Hell, being tormented for the crimes that they committed on Earth.

Our latest look book tells the story of an illustrators journey, giving life to the famous warner bros “that’s all folks”, to smoke breaks from hours at a desktop, a glimpse at life of minimal friends and family to and before entering asylumed home-base, with influence of extreme-commercialism in a whimsical, fun-prodding approach through them threads.
Here's a bit about Ella Parkin, the artist who inspired our latest look book..
What inspired you to paint this mural? I’d drive past the lot every day and see all the cars parked in rows, facing a blank wall. I liked it because it looked like a drive-in cinema but without the screen - So I thought they could use some entertainment.
The site also has an interesting history; it used to be the Johannesburg steam laundry, which later became a heritage site. It was unlawfully demolished in 2008, so that also plays into the slogan.
It looks like it took some time to do - how long did it take you? It took a few weeks of planning and research, 2 days of planning off-site making stencils, and 2 days to paint. I luckily had my dad’s help to paint it, he’s an artist.
Who are your favorite South African artists? To name a few, Walter Battiss, Walter Oltmann, Zanele Muholi, Guy du Toit, Simon Stone, Kerri Evans, Penny Siopis, Themba Khumalo…I also think my dad’s quite good, his name is Simon Parkin
Who is your favorite character from the Warner Bros franchise? I like Sylvester J. Pussycat, Sr. a.k.a Puddy Tat. I’ve always loved cartoons because of the combination of narrative, art and humor, and my art usually resonates with this.
What’s it like to be an artist in South Africa? I’m still a student so I wouldn’t consider myself a professional artist yet, but I love the South African art scene; it’s vibrant and exciting.
Where do you put out your art, if it’s not on walls in the streets of Joburg? I’ve exhibited in collaboration with my dad at the MOAD gallery in Maboneng. I work mainly as an illustrator though, and just finished illustrating a children’s book that will be out soon. Right now I have some illustration projects in the works, and I’m planning another street art project. If you’re interested, check out my Instagram @ella_parkin_art
