This entry cabinet was such a fun build. My aunt commissioned it with no design constraints other than mixed woods and a little live edge. There was no hard deadline so I had some time to play with the design along the way. The top is elm Burl from a local sawyer. The case is all claro walnut from Santa Margarita that was milled in the 90’s. I used reclaimed cedar for the back and the base is oxidized white oak. I turned the brass pulls on my wood lathe. . . . . #hawkandstone #losangeles #brentwood #clarowalnut #elm #whiteoak #cedar #furniture #californiamodern #modern #interiordesign #nakashima #liveedge #casegood (at South Central LA) https://www.instagram.com/p/B24fo39gACO/?igshid=18qxc3kf3jyyc

Sideboard, Daniel Pabst, 1868, Art Institute of Chicago: American Art
Marking the height of the “modern Gothic” style in Philadelphia, this sideboard resembles the furniture designed by notable architect Frank Furness, who frequently collaborated with cabinetmaker Daniel Pabst. Although details of the piece’s carving tie it unmistakably to Pabst, the design cannot be attributed conclusively to a particular hand. The designer was influenced by the writings of Christopher Dresser and Charles Eastlake, British reformers who advocated honesty of construction and conventionalized ornament. Instead of carving the decoration deeply in order to achieve a naturalistic effect, Pabst used a cameo technique, cutting through the burled elm veneer to reveal the darker walnut beneath and creating a striking color contrast and flattened style of decoration. In the mid-nineteenth century, dining-room furniture typically featured ornament that was intended to reinforce ideals of hospitality and gentility. Here the cabinet doors display designs recounting Aesop’s fable of the fox and the stork, a tale in which each animal offers the other some food in a serving dish from which the guest cannot eat, thus proving the importance of true hospitality. The panels are virtually identical to images found on curtain designs illustrated in Eastlake’s 1868 book Hints on Household Taste, a text that was widely influential in the United States. Gift of the Antiquarian Society Size: 256.5 × 185.4 × 62.2 cm (101 × 73 × 24 1/2 in.) Medium: Walnut and burled elm

How To Determine Biedermeier Chests
Tumblr media
Well-maintained lines, a glittering finish and charming craftsmanship with natural hardwoods make a genuine Biedermeier chest an immediate center of attention in any type of environment. Originating in the early 19th century, Biedermeier providing style determined succeeding household furniture styles as well as appreciated repeated revivals throughout the 20th as well as 19th centuries. Biedermeier pieces continue to be actually appreciated as well as collected through buffs of fine home furniture, creating all of them a valuable expenditure. To get more information concerning house decor with antique furnishings: view this source.
Record of Biedermeier
Between 1815 as well as 1835, adhering to the Napoleonic battles, a new ornamental type-- less restless and also more useful than the French Empire and Directoire styles that anticipated it-- arised in Northern Europe, particularly in Austria and also southern Germany. It was modestly sized for private residences and domesticity as opposed to marvelous palatial halls. Fruitwoods frequently substituted additional pricey woods like mahogany, as well as inlays and also veneers offered decorative accents as opposed to carvings. Much later on, towards the end of the century, the brand new design was tagged "Biedermeier" by Georg Hirth in a manual on interior design. He derived the title coming from a mid-century fictitious personality, Wieland Gottfried Biedermeier, who spoofed the comfortable conveniences and also conceits of the rising middle class. "Bieder," roughly translated, suggests "commonplace," "plain," or "regular," as well as "Meier" was actually a normal last name.
Components

The typical very early Biedermeier chest has a minimalist mathematical appearance including straight or gently curved lines and also restrained ornament. Prior to the mid-19th century, a common chest of cabinets contained four long or three long as well as 2 short drawers. The bank of cabinets was actually installed on a little bent or even upright lower legs, with rounded legs obtaining favor later on in the period. Specific cabinets opened up with hairs and also normally performed not have pulls. The majority of attractive accents were related to the frontal surface areas. Biedermeier home furniture was actually designed for personal properties, not palaces, so the much smaller scale of the items appropriates for average-size areas.
Ornamental Concepts
A variety of concepts from previous time periods appeared as ornamental components on Biedermeier furniture, relying on the preference of the artisan. These consisted of easy kinds of swans, dolphins, sphinx, acanthus, cougar's paws as well as lyres. Home aspects including domes, pediments and also columns were likewise used to enrich the straightforward lines of the home decor.
Traditional Products
Cabinetry artisans used native hardwoods, conveniently offered in their areas, including maple, cherry, pear aspen and walnut. These hardwoods made lighter surfaces that were frequently accented with distinguishing ebonized trim or fragile inlay. The thickness of the lumbers used in laminates assists calculate the age of the home furniture. Earlier veneers were more thick, as well as later on machine-produced veneers were a lot thinner. Home furniture was sometimes decorated along with dark and gold coating or opulent superstars. If metallic ornamentation was actually applied, rubber-stamped brass was actually used rather than bronze.
Cabinet Making Techniques
Recently formed guilds permitted artisans to discuss procedures of style, alright workmanship, veneering as well as finishing. Alright veneering processes were cultivated to highlight all-natural wood-grain styles including bird's-eye maple, burls and also crotches. A lengthy finishing method known as French elegance ended up being well-known to make vivid shiny surfaces along with a gorgeous deepness of colour. Labor-intensive Biedermeier furnishings was actually inexpensive only to the even more privileged participants of the new middle class.
