The Challenge and Thrill of Moose Hunting: A Wilderness Adventure
Moose hunting stands as one of the most challenging and rewarding pursuits in the world of big game hunting. These majestic creatures, the largest members of the deer family, offer hunters an unparalleled experience that combines skill, patience, and a deep connection with nature. From the rugged forests of North America to the vast wilderness of Scandinavia, moose hunting attracts enthusiasts from around the globe.
The allure of moose hunting Ontario lies not only in the pursuit of an impressive trophy but also in the immersive experience of navigating remote wilderness areas. Moose typically inhabit dense forests, swamps, and remote lake regions, requiring hunters to develop a keen understanding of their habitat and behavior. This connection with the natural world is a fundamental aspect of the hunt, often drawing hunters back year after year.
Preparation is key to a successful moose hunt. Hunters must be physically fit to traverse challenging terrain and potentially pack out hundreds of pounds of meat. Equipment choices are crucial, with many opting for high-powered rifles capable of ethical, long-range shots. Proper clothing and gear to withstand harsh weather conditions are essential, as moose hunting seasons often coincide with the onset of colder weather.
One of the most effective techniques in moose hunting is calling. During the rutting season, hunters use various calls to mimic the sounds of both bull and cow moose. The deep, guttural grunts of a bull moose echoing through the forest can send shivers down a hunter's spine. Mastering these calls takes practice and patience, but it can significantly increase the chances of attracting a bull within range.
Spot and stalk is another popular method, especially in more open terrain. This involves glassing vast areas to locate moose and then carefully planning an approach. The challenge lies in navigating quietly through often dense undergrowth, all while remaining downwind of the highly sensitive nose of a moose.
Conservation plays a vital role in moose hunting. Regulated hunting helps manage moose populations, preventing overgrazing and maintaining healthy ecosystems. Many hunters take pride in their role as conservationists, understanding that their license fees and activities contribute to wildlife management and habitat preservation.
The ethical aspects of moose hunting cannot be overstated. Responsible hunters prioritize clean, humane kills and proper utilization of the animal. A single moose can provide hundreds of pounds of high-quality, organic meat, often sustaining families for months. This aspect of self-sufficiency and connection to one's food source is a significant draw for many hunters.
While the physical and technical aspects of moose hunting are challenging, many hunters find the mental game equally demanding. Hours or even days can pass without a sighting, testing a hunter's patience and resolve. The ability to remain focused and alert in the face of monotony and harsh conditions is often what separates successful hunters from the rest.
The camaraderie of a moose hunting camp adds another dimension to the experience. Shared stories around the campfire, collaborative efforts in tracking and harvesting, and the mutual respect among hunters create lasting bonds and memories.
In conclusion, moose hunting offers more than just the pursuit of game. It's an adventure that challenges hunters physically and mentally, connects them intimately with nature, and instills a deep respect for wildlife and conservation. Whether it results in a successful harvest or not, the experience of moose hunting leaves an indelible mark on those who undertake this wilderness challenge. https://uchilakelodge.com/hunting/

Stumbling Upon A Fabled Feline
Labour Day 2020, was a different time for everyone, experiencing the ups and downs of COVID-19. I was going on what seemed like the millionth month of a pandemic layoff with no end in sight. Being home made me stir-crazy, and like many, my mental health was declining. No matter how optimistic or productive I set out to be, nothing worked to cure how low and hopeless I was feeling on the…

November 11th - We did some exploring today! It was pre-covid since we chased after trophy Walleye. The weather window allowed us to get out, and we took full advantage of it. We started the morning off with a 10lb eye, and followed that up with an 8lb and 11lb specimen. We dropped 5-6 other fish, and landed a Northern Pike, a Smallmouth, and a few White Perch. Boy do I love double digit Walleye! Everything was released to grow, because we'll be back looking for that "teener!"

Big Green River
Tumblr media
I was supposed to be walleye fishing in Ontario this week, but had to postpone the trip until next year because my fishing partner experienced some health issues. So I decided to fill the hole in my schedule with another trip to the Driftless Region.
Wednesday on my way in I stopped at the Big Green. The weather was a little threatening but it wasn’t raining yet.
I don’t think I’ve fished this location in August before. I’ve never seen such a healthy growth of greenery, both on the shore and in the water. Because of the overgrowth (and an ankle injury I’m nursing), I couldn’t hike downstream as far as I usually like to. When I dropped down into the stream, the wading was tough because thick weed beds obscured my view.
But there were some nice fish hiding in all those weeds, and I caught six brown trout.
I headed up to the West Fork Sports Club to set up camp with a new tent and finished just as it started to sprinkle. After dinner in Viroqua, I settled down for the night to the tapping of rain on the fly.

Great Lakes Awareness Day
Great Lakes Awareness Day celebrates the Great Lakes and highlights the issues they face, and how the lakes can be preserved. Events for the day have involved organizations such as schools, aquariums, and museums. There is not much information available online about how the day is celebrated or how it came to be.
There are five Great Lakes: Superior, Huron, Michigan, Ontario, and Erie. Together they make up the largest body of freshwater on Earth and stretch 750 miles from east to west. They are located on the border of the United States and Canada and touch the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, New York, and Pennsylvania. It is believed that at one time the Great Lakes were covered by a glacier—it receded towards Canada and left depressions filled with water.
Lake Huron is named after the Wyandot Indians, also known as the Huron Indians, and its surface area is the second largest of the lakes. Manitoulin Island is located in it—the largest island in a freshwater lake in the world. Lake Huron connects to Lake Michigan by the Straits of Mackinac. Lake Michigan takes its name from the Ojibwa word for “large lake.” It is the third largest Great Lake in surface area, and the second largest in volume. It is the only Great Lake completely in the United States.
Lake Erie’s name comes from the Iroquoian word for “long tail.” It is the fourth largest Great Lake in surface area, but the smallest in volume. It is very shallow, averaging just 62 feet in depth. Lake Ontario takes its name from the Huron word for “lake of shining water.” It has the smallest surface area of the Great Lakes, but is very deep, holding four times the volume of water as Lake Erie. Lake Erie and Lake Ontario are connected by the Niagara River, on which Niagara Falls is located. Lake Superior is the largest Great Lake in surface area and volume, and it is the deepest of the lakes, reaching a depth of 1,332 feet. Its name comes from the French word for “upper lake,” and fittingly, it is the farthest north of the Great Lakes.
Vessels from the United States and Canada haul about 125 million tons of cargo on the lakes each year. They haul mined materials such as iron ore, coal, stone, and salt; agricultural products such as wheat, corn, soybeans, and oats; as well as other materials. About 3,500 species of plants and animals live in the Great Lakes Basin, including over 170 species of fish. The lakes are a large freshwater fishery, being a home for species such as salmon, trout, perch, walleye, bass, and herring.
The Great Lakes face many issues, such as pollution and invasive species, illustrating why a day is needed to raise awareness about them. Over 140 federal programs for environmental restoration and management take place on the Great Lakes. Amendments to the Clean Water Act were made in 1972, helping regulate water pollution in the lakes. The Great Lakes Quality Act, also from 1972, was signed by the United States and Canada to help protect and restore the Great Lakes.
How to Observe
See if any organizations or places near you are holding any events on the day. Learn about issues the Great Lakes face, and find ways to get involved to protect the lakes. Plan a trip to explore some of the wonders of the Great Lakes. Maybe you could even explore the lakes while driving one of the Great Lakes Circle Tours. It is believed that about 6,000 ships have sunk in the Great Lakes, with about 30,000 lives lost. You could spend the day learning about some of the shipwrecks by visiting the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. One of the most famous ships to have sunk is the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, which sank in a storm in Lake Superior on November 10, 1975, with all 29 of its crew members perishing. It was immortalized in song by Gordon Lightfoot.

June 29th - Our last charter was Friday May 17th, so it's been a while. We're very appreciative of the Lake Ontario Salmon fishery that made us look good! What rust? 😁
Floyd and his crew drove in from South Western PA to fish with us today. It was touch and go yesterday afternoon because they thought they may melt in the rain that was expected during their trip, but we assured them everything would be just fine.
The fishing was complete mayhem, as expected, but these Walleye anglers did quite well. We caught a lot, we lost a lot, and we selectively harvested some nice fish.
