Dearest sister,
I hope things are well there. We celebrated Margaret's thirteenth birthday a few days ago. Hard to believe the two oldest are teenagers now. Daisy took her shopping for more appropriate frocks and I can't believe how grown up she looks.

**excerpt from Margaret's private diary**
The horror of war is something I never want to see again. There are so many men who made the voyage back to Simerica only to die at the hands of infection or influenza. It's all I can do to keep my hands from being rubbed raw from all the handwashing I do.
We have a new patient. We didn't think he'd make it through the first night, but he did. He'd been caught in an attack with mustard gas and then a nearby shell threw flaming debris at him. He's more bandage than skin at this point. I sing to him. I sing to all the patients. it soothes them, and keeps me in practice. He woke one night while I was tending him, and I had the unfortunate task of telling him that he was never going to regain the sight in his left eye. I told him that he would heal and that the doctors were hopeful that the scarring wouldn't be too bad. He asked that we pray, so I grabbed his hand and said a small, quick prayer with him.
He then introduced himself as Otho Petrie Roper and that his family immigrated here before he was born from Finland. He tells me stories that his mother and father told him. He's quite engaging. I feel so terribly that he's in such pain as he heals, but I'm glad for the chance to lessen his pain with my company and care.

I had to tell the girls that their mother would need more help over the next few weeks. I don't know rightly know what happened, Daisy is a competant cook and knows her way around the kitchen but she'd been complaining that the stove was acting funny of late. I should have paid more heed to what she was saying. The dadgum thing caught fire and in her attempts to put it out Daisy was burned. Not badly but her arm is burned. I don't know how badly she'll scar, but that's not even the worst of it. She was with child. We had no idea. She didn't even think she could get pregnant anymore; it's been so long since Josephine was born. My poor Daisy has had such terrible bleeding that the doctor put her on bedrest for the next week.

2022 U.S. State of the Birds report reveals widespread losses of birds in all habitats--except for one

2022 U.S. State of the Birds report reveals widespread losses of birds in all habitats--except for one
A newly released State of the Birds report for the United States reveals a tale of two trends, one hopeful, one dire. Long-term trends of waterfowl show strong increases where investments in wetland conservation have improved conditions for birds and people. But data show birds in the United States are declining overall in every other habitat — forests, grasslands, deserts, and oceans.
Published by 33 leading science and conservation organizations and agencies, the 2022 U.S. State of the Birds report is the first look at the nation’s birds since a landmark 2019 study showed the loss of 3 billion birds in the United States and Canada in 50 years.
Findings included in the report:
More than half of U.S. bird species are declining.
U.S. grassland birds are among the fastest declining with a 34% loss since 1970.
Waterbirds and ducks in the U.S. have increased by 18% and 34% respectively during the same period.
70 newly identified Tipping Point species have each lost 50% or more of their populations in the past 50 years, and are on a track to lose another half in the next 50 years if nothing changes. They include beloved gems such as Rufous Hummingbirds, songsters such as Golden-winged Warblers, and oceanic travelers such as Black-footed Albatrosses.
“The rapid declines in birds signal the intensifying stresses that wildlife and people alike are experiencing around the world because of habitat loss, environmental degradation and extreme climate events,” said Dr. Amanda Rodewald, director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s Center for Avian Population Studies. “Taking action to bring birds back delivers a cascade of benefits that improve climate resilience and quality of life for people. When we restore forests, for example, we sequester carbon, reduce fire intensity, and create habitat for plants and animals. By greening cities, we provide heat relief, increase access to recreation, and create refuge for migrating birds.”
The report used five sources of data, including the North American Breeding Bird Survey and Christmas Bird Count, to track the health of breeding birds in habitats across the United States.
“From grassland birds to seabirds to Hawaiian birds, we continue to see that nearly all groups of birds and types of bird habitat have declined significantly,” said Martha Williams, director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “The one group that is seeing an increase in population size are wetland dependent birds, including waterfowl.”
“While a majority of bird species are declining, many waterbird populations remain healthy, thanks to decades of collaborative investments from hunters, landowners, state and federal agencies, and corporations,” said Dr. Karen Waldrop, chief conservation officer for Ducks Unlimited. “This is good news not only for birds, but for the thousands of other species that rely on wetlands, and the communities that benefit from groundwater recharge, carbon sequestration, and flood protection.”

The report suggests that applying that winning formula in more habitats will help birds and natural resources rebound.
“The North American Waterfowl Management Plan, Federal Duck Stamp Program, grants from the North American Wetlands Conservation Act, and regional Joint Ventures partnerships are all part of a framework that has a proven track record with restoring and protecting wetland-dependent species,” said Williams of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “Now we want to use that precedent to work with our partners to restore bird populations, conserve habitat, and build a foundation for how we respond to the loss of other bird groups.”
Data show that conservation must be stepped up to reverse the biggest declines among shorebirds, down by 33% since 1970, and grasslands birds, down by 34%. Recognizing the need to work at bigger, faster scales, 200 organizations from across seven sectors in Mexico, Canada, the U.S., and Indigenous Nations are collaborating on a Central Grasslands Roadmap to conserve one of North America’s largest and most vital ecosystems — hundreds of million acres of grasslands.
“People have changed our grassland landscape and people are key to its future,” said Tammy VerCauteren, executive director of the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies and a representative of the Central Grasslands Roadmap. “Collectively, we are working to make a movement to save our grasslands and the people and wildlife that depend upon them. Together we can ensure Tribal sovereignty, private property rights, food security, resilient landscapes, and thriving wildlife populations.”
Given widespread declines, the report emphasizes the need for proactive conservation across habitats and species.
advertisement
“Despite best hopes and efforts, 70 Tipping Point bird species have a half life of just 50 years-meaning they will lose half their already dwindling populations in the next 50 years unless we take action,” said Dr. Peter Marra, director of The Earth Commons — Georgetown University’s Institute for Environment & Sustainability. “What we’ve outlined in this State of the Birds is a recipe for how conservation biologists can work with communities and use surgical precision to solve environmental problems — blending new technology and data to pinpoint the cause of losses and to reverse declines while we still have the best chance — now, before more birds plummet to endangered.”
The report advises that meeting the tremendous need will require a strategic combination of partnerships, incentives, science-based solutions, and the will to dramatically scale up conservation efforts.
“Everyone can make a difference to help turn declines around,” said Mike Parr, president of the American Bird Conservancy. “Everyone with a window can use simple solutions to prevent collisions. Everyone can help green their neighborhood and avoid using pesticides that harm birds. Everyone who lives in a neighborhood can bring the issues and solutions to their community and use their voice to take action.”

Her hair is still wildly curly, which is probably the most defining feature she got from her mother, aside from the freckles. She's as thin as a rail which is why her ability to sing is a great suprise. Where does the air come from? She's intent on joining the church's choir - now that she's of age. I for one am looking forward to hearing her sing every Sunday.
Your devoted brother,
Thomas

New videos show the 4-minute sequence in which Ronald Greene is tased and dragged from his car The footage comes from cameras that were used by Lt. John Clary, Trooper Chris Hollingsworth, Trooper Kory York and Trooper Dakota DeMoss, who are White. Greene’s family said they were told by LSP that Greene died in a car crash, but the videos tell a different story of what happened on the night of May 10, 2019, near the city of Monroe. According to the LSP’s initial report of Greene’s death, he was taken into custody after “resisting arrest and a struggle with Troopers.” The report said Greene died while on route to hospital. But the videos offer a more detailed account of the encounter, with footage showing parts of the car chase as well as the four-minute sequence between when police open Greene’s car and when he’s handcuffed on the ground. New video shows how quickly police began tasing and beating The cameras provide audio of the tense radio transmissions describing the moments in the chase. At no point in any of the videos released are there images of Greene’s car as he’s fleeing from police. The attempts to pull Greene from his vehicle can be seen and heard on DeMoss’ camera. “OK, OK, OK officer — Lord Jesus,” can be heard and a Taser can be seen going off while Greene is still in the car. “OK, OK. I’m sorry. I’m scared. Officer, I’m scared, I’m your brother, I’m scared,” Greene says as at least two troopers attempt to drag him out of the vehicle. At one point from DeMoss’ camera, a trooper says, “He’s bigger than me, He’s bigger than me” as Greene and a trooper wrestle on the ground. The camera goes on to show a struggle as officers attempt to handcuff Greene. A trooper appears to put Greene in a chokehold as they wrestle on the ground, and Greene lies there while another trooper continues to tase him as he’s restrained by the other trooper. Greene wails as he lies face down on the ground while one trooper sits on top of him, pressing his hand onto the back of Greene’s neck and punching him in the face, the video shows. Another trooper tries to handcuff him and punches his lower back, according to the footage. Almost four minutes elapse from the moment troopers open Greene’s car door until he is fully handcuffed, as seen in the footage. Taser prongs can be seen embedded in Greene’s skin as his shirt lifts up while troopers curse and wrestle to pull his arms behind his back. The troopers appear to stop beating Greene after they handcuff and leave him on the ground face down. As they walk away, one says, “You stupid motherf****r,” as Greene continues to cry out. Audio from Hollingsworth’s body camera revealed a telephone exchange inside his patrol vehicle after the beating. He begins by saying Greene was drunk. “And I beat the ever-living f*** out of him, choked him and everything else trying to get him under control and we finally got him in handcuffs when a third man got there and the son of a bitch was still fighting and we was still wrestling with him trying to hold him down because he was spitting blood everywhere,” Hollingsworth says in the video. “And then all of a sudden he just went limp,” Hollingsworth said. “They took pleasure in torturing my son,” mom says Jay McGowan, Greene’s brother-in-law, described Greene as “a respectful man” and “a good guy” who almost immediately expressed remorse and apologized to the officers for leading them on a chase. McGowan on Saturday recalled his last conversation with Greene days before his death. The two men talked about starting a program to feed the homeless. Greene’s mother, Mona Hardin, told CNN Saturday that her family has been subjected by authorities to an “ongoing narrative of incomplete answers,” with police not even able to tell them why troopers attempted to pull her son over in the first place. She said the family came away with more questions than answers after state officials in September showed them brief silent parts of the video made public this week. “I did ask at the time, ‘Where’s the rest of it, and why are we looking at footage with no sound to it?'” she said. “I want to see what happened. I want to see that. I want to see why. … They allowed us to walk out of there not having answers.” As for the newly released video, Hardin said, “What I saw was that he was not meant to leave alive. He was going to be killed.” Hardin told CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Friday that she believes that the LSP tried to cover up what happened to her son. She said state police initially said her son died when his car crashed into a tree after a police pursuit. “It’s been a battle from the moment we heard of (his death),” Hardin said. “There’s no words for how mad I am. I’m disgusted. “They took pleasure in torturing my son. They took pleasure in hurting him, beating and killing him and letting him stay on the ground,” Hardin said. An attorney for the family, Lee Merritt, told CNN Saturday that the family believes the case would never have received attention had portions of police body camera video not been leaked. “But for this leak, that would have been the end of the Ronald Greene story,” Merritt said. Merritt said the case showed why it is important for video evidence to be released. “When law enforcement alone are the only persons with access to critical evidence like this kind of video, the process is to minimize the conduct, to keep it out of the eyes of the public, and to protect the police officers,” Merritt said. “Once it gets out into the hands of the public, that public pressure turns out to be very effective in moving elected officials to hold police officers accountable.” Another attorney for the family, Ron Haley, said the troopers should be arrested. “Everyone that put their hands on Ronald Greene should be arrested and two minutes after they are arrested, anyone that participated in the cover-up should follow them right into the jail cell,” Haley told CNN. Haley said Saturday that the troopers “took it upon themselves to be judge, jury and executioner.” “They just could not get their story straight,” Haley told CNN, referring to the police. “It did not add up to the physicians. It did not add up to the coroner, and there needs to be a deeper dive in this investigation.” Greene’s family filed a federal wrongful death suit on May 6, 2020. The lawsuit cites a Glenwood Medical Center emergency room physician who allegedly noted that differing accounts about what happened to Greene did not “add up.” Autopsy says Greene’s death was “inconsistent” with car crash An autopsy from the Union Parish Coroner’s Office states in its opinion section that lacerations of Greene’s head were “inconsistent with motor vehicle collision injury and most consistent with multiple impacts from a blunt object.” The report also says, “no written incident report was provided despite requests” and that “no detailed information regarding the motor vehicle collision … was provided. It notes that “no emergency services medical records were provided” to the coroner’s office. “Whether this injury is due to trauma from the motor vehicle collision, subsequent struggle, or is resuscitative in nature cannot be stated with certainty. These findings can be associated with motor vehicle collision, but may also be seen in other circumstances, including inflicted injury during a struggle and/or related to resuscitative efforts (CPR),” the report said. There were significant levels of cocaine and alcohol in Greene’s blood, the report says. The AP reported last year that Union Parish Coroner Renee Smith said Greene’s death was ruled accidental and was attributed to cardiac arrest. CNN has reached out to the coroner’s office for comment on the report. The autopsy does not list the manner of death, meaning whether it was accidental, homicide, natural causes, suicide or undetermined. CNN’s Chris Boyette, Ryan Young, Jamiel Lynch, Alta Spells, Hollie Silverman, Madeline Holcombe, Steve Almasy, Theresa Waldrop, Maggie Fox and Virginia Langmaid contributed to this report. In this episode, NASCAR fanatic and former Marine, Cory Waldrop gets his life completely transformed by The Fab Five. Antoni gives Cory cooking and food preparation tips and teaches him how to make a grapefruit avocado salad and sangria for his wife. Tan takes Cory to DXL and assists him as he searches for a new wardrobe that doesn't consist of t-shirts and gym shorts. Bobby hires people to declutter his “party” basement and make his upstairs feel like a place he wants to actually hangout in. Jonathan gives Cory a new look by shaving off his mustache, giving him a haircut, and teaching him new ways to style it. And Karamo has heart to heart conversations with Cory as he tries to learn more about him to understand him better.
The presumed genders of Antoni, Bobby, Karam, Tan, and Cory are male and they all use he/him/his pronouns throughout the episode, while Jonathan identifies as non-binary so they’re comfortable with being referred to by he/she/they pronouns. Since this is a reality TV show, all the characters get around the same amount of screen time and since all but one character identifies as male, males often speak the most in comparison to other female, non-binary and a-gendered characters. All of their sexualities and gendered identities are the reason the show is titled what it is. With queer being an umbrella term for anyone that doesn’t identify as straight or cis-gendered, it allows for fluidity on the sexuality and gender spectrum and all of their identities accurately represent the meaning and title of the show.
The race representation amongst the main characters in the show is a step up from the original Queer Eye For the Straight Guy series, seen as there are now two people of color as main characters as opposed to one. Three out of the five characters (Antoni, Bobby, and Jonathan) identify as white, while Karam identifies as black, and Tan identifying as a South Asian Muslim. Cory Waldrop is also white and while race isn’t always brought up and discussed in every episode, this particular episode begins with Karamo being pulled over by the police. Assuming that the cop is racial profiling since no law was broken, Bobby whips out a phone and starts recording/taking pictures of the cop. The cop asks Karamo to step out of the vehicle to which he reveals that he’s actually Cory’s friend/coworker and is the one who nominated him. Although this joke was in very bad taste, it led to a much deeper conversation that Cory and Karamo have later on in the episode. Cory talks about the stereotypes of cops being bad and how he is often lumped into that mix of bad cops while Karam talks about how it is being a black man and how people stereotype him as a thug and criminal. They both express how having these types of stereotypes attached to them affects them negatively and neither one of them wants to be associated with them.
Although Karam was able to express how it feels to be a black man and to be racially profiled, Cory failed to really understand where he was coming from. Instead of seeing it from Karam’s point of view, he got kind of defensive and tried insinuating that there’s problems on both sides since cops also get stereotyped. His initial response is very telling of how sensitive and fragile this topic is for him and he claimed that the social/political movement, Black Lives Matter were able to get their voices heard but police officers weren’t. Although this was filmed back in 2018 when the movement didn’t have the widespread support it has now, this is a common reaction we still see in today’s discussion around the movement. It was revealed earlier in the episode that Cory is a Trump loving republican so it’s no surprise that he had that reaction but in order for progress to be made with the Black Lives Matter movement, people must recognize the problem and admit that it is there. Karam and Cory conclude their conversation with a handshake and an agreement that in order to combat this problem, conversations like the one they just had need to continue if we want to better our society.

"Revolution Earth" is the third single released by The B-52's from their 1992 album Good Stuff. The song's music video was directed by James Herbert. The single contains remixes of the song by Moby. The song is an upbeat, folk influenced song, a radical stylistic departure for the B-52's. Featuring Kate Pierson on lead vocals, "Revolution Earth" remains a fan favourite despite the fact that it is from an album featuring only three of the original five members of the band. With founding member Cindy Wilson absent from the recording, Pierson sings in harmony with herself - multi-tracking different vocal lines. Fred Schneider sings a brief backing vocal. As with many of the tracks from the Good Stuff album, "Revolution Earth" has a long and resounding intro and outro, as opposed to the band's earlier songs which always had a definite beginning and ending. "Revolution Earth" was regularly featured in the B-52's live shows from 1992 up until about 2001. When Cindy Wilson rejoined the band in 1996, she sang backing vocals when the song was performed live. Latter live performances were couched in a faster rhythm and featured Sara Lee (then bass player for the band) on backing vocals, along with Wilson. "Revolution Earth" is one of many songs with lyrics co-written with Robert Waldrop, a friend of the band. Shown above are the 7' vinyl single, the CD single, the promo CD single and the 12' vinyl picture disc.

The Ghost Of A Hunter by Keith Waldrop
He reads: What soul suffers in secret, the flesh shows openly.    Deep within, in a region hardly accessible, a bold self-image sends messages of bloodshed and conquest, which reverberate in his heart of hearts.    [I forget which hand is writing.]    He does not doubt that he exists.    The five senses have left their mark on him. It is a record of what has happened to him, but he cannot talk or travel until he finds a body of water.    A man who has lived on reindeer’s flesh amuses himself with ripples.    In this cage was once a nightingale. In the echo, new words for wind.    The usual convulsions, and a green cat. And, after all, months or years are nothing to him.    [My image contains his body.]    His body contains bodies.    Blemishes.    Inglories.    Vague figures, in a howling wind, and with no notion of perspective.    Of countless ruined worlds, he would appropriate the essential emblem. Wall struggling with wall, shadow with shad- ow.    Thousands of miles a day.    He gazes across an unguarded cemetery—gazes idly, waiting for new equipment.    As through a fixed window, he finds a kind of space, the visible world foreshortened.    He does not see deeply, but—still—one thing behind another.    He keeps a tiny bird, folded like a sheet of paper.    Twice two is four—still—and a circle has no angles.    Body sheds shoulder, jaw. However body may appear, the soul comes back in scars.    [There are no dead. Only names.]    Too close, ruin wrinkles the surface—his breath bothers reality. The sun pours down. The pots are mended.    An unfolding, from where it is all contained.    The ships have been salvaged. [I do not know what body he has in mind.] Clothing is resumed. Temples are rebuilt.    “Which body?” we inquire, while all the liars cry out, “Verily!”    As though all this were in the dark.    Here is a column of soldiers, a heap of apples, an avenue of trees. Here a swarm of bees, of birds, a row of equidistant lines. A set of unequal objects distributes the field of vision.    Here is the painted world in an actual image. [I have no theory for the clouds he sees.]
