The Masked Singer: S9 E7 (‘80s Night) Commentary

I’m watching and posting on a bit of a delay tonight because I needed to eat something before watching. (TL;DR version: The last day or so has been absolute hell on me mentally because my dog wasn’t doing too good. However, her condition has been improving, and it was likely due to a possible ear infection affecting her balance. She’s not completely in the clear yet, but her eyes have finally stabilized and she’s starting to get her sparkle back in her eyes. I was incredibly stressed out for much of yesterday and have barely eaten, so this pre-viewing meal was definitely needed.)

The final group of the season begins competing tonight, and the judges have one more save in play before the Quarterfinals begin. Whoever they save will compete against Medusa 🐍 and Gargoyle 🪨 🦇 for a spot in the Quarterfinals.

Doll 👧: Looks about Nick’s height when you don’t take the mask into account. So, the disguised speaking voice kind of sounds male, and they referenced Rocky. They say they feel “right at home” at ‘80s Night, which makes me think they first rose to fame or had their biggest fame then. We see a dollhouse filled with toy animals: a chicken, a goat or sheep, and a cow. Called themselves a “weirdo”. Was part of a group or crew with “other misfit weirdos”. One of Doll’s mates is holding a play bill reading Guys as Doll. We see a can of hairspray labeled “Hairspray”, which could be a reference to either the Hairspray movie or the musical adapted from it. (Definitely not Ricki Lake, though, she was a contestant on Season 1.) I’m going to guess that this is either Harvey Fierstein or Bruce Vilanch, who both played Edna Turnblad in the Broadway production of Hairspray. The bonus clue reads “Ghostwriter”. Samuel L. Jackson was in the pilot for the PBS series Ghostwriter, but I don’t think it’s him. I’m probably way off on this one. But we know it’s definitely not Donnie Wahlberg (not only because he was Cluedle-Doo 🐓 in a past season, but also because his wife Jenny McCarthy pointed out he was in the audience 😂).

Scorpio ♏️: Seems to be female. We see a sign for Claw Street (a take on the ‘80s film Wall Street), with businesspeople and a cubicle with sports balls in it: football 🏈, soccer ⚽️, basketball 🏀, tennis 🎾. A crumpled up dollar bill. May have pursued a career in entertainment but ended up becoming famous for being herself, so probably a reality TV star. A picture of a house with a red door, and a mannequin with a red jumpsuit. I’m not getting much from her singing voice. The bonus clue: a dance called “The Sprinkler”. She seems to be on a Real Housewives-type show. My best guesses are either Lisa Rinna (who was on a Real Housewives show) or Denise Richards (who used to be married to Charlie Sheen, who was in, I think, one or both of the Wall Street movies). Leaning more towards Lisa Rinna, though.

Moose 🦌: Singing his own theme song. I saw him wearing a patch that says “I ❤️ 🌲”. Might have a famous wife. And there were also hot dogs with green ketchup on them. Probably on the older side, he isn’t moving a bunch and sitting on the set piece. My guess is that he’s probably a comedian or sitcom star. The bonus clue is: an acceptance speech, which he apparently hasn’t made a lot of. So perhaps he’s been nominated for an Emmy, but never won. There may have been references to Cheers, and hot dogs instead of burgers? The voice also sounds like it could be John Ratzenberger, who played Cliff Clavin on Cheers. I’m sticking with him.

American multi-brand footwear retailer Foot Locker has announced a $100 million in GOAT Group, one of the most prominent players in the fast-growing $6 billion global sneaker reselling market.

The investment brings GOAT’s total raised investment to $197.6 million since its launch in 2015. The move marks the largest investment to date by a retailer into the secondary sneaker market, as well as Foot Locker’s biggest investment ever. (Foot Locker recently invested a total of $20 million in women’s luxury activewear brand Carbon38, children’s lifestyle brand Super Heroic and footwear design academy Pensole, all of which are digital-first businesses).

“At Foot Locker we’re constantly looking at new ways to elevate our customer experience and bring sneaker and youth culture to people around the world,” Richard Johnson, Foot Locker, Inc.’s chairman and CEO says in a statement provided to Highsnobiety. “We’re excited to leverage GOAT Group’s technology to further innovate the sneaker buying experience and utilize their best-in-class online marketplace to help meet the ever-growing global demand for the latest product.”

“In 2015, we pioneered the ship-to-verify model with a mission to bring a seamless and safe customer experience to the secondary sneaker market,” adds Eddy Lu, co-founder and CEO of GOAT Group, who says that having Foot Locker’s global reach will enable GOAT’s business to scale its operations both domestically and internationally.

“With over 3,000 retail locations [in 27 countries] Foot Locker will support our primarily digital presence with physical access points worldwide, bringing more value to our community of buyers and sellers,” he says.

“The sneaker resale market has been disruptive to the primary market. Foot Locker is investing in that disruption and believes that the resale market will continue to grow and its wants a piece of that growth,” Matt Powell, senior sports industry advisor at The NPD Group tells Highsnobiety.

And it’s not the only one. The deal follows a slew of recent investments in the sneaker resale space.

In February 2018, Stadium Goods sold a minority stake to LVMH Luxury Ventures for an undisclosed sum. That same month, GOAT acquired sneaker consignment store Flight Club while also raising a $60 million investment round led by venture capital firm Index Ventures. Then in June, Grailed, the peer-to-peer streetwear marketplace co-founded in 2013 by Jake Metzger, Arun Gupta, and Julian Connor, also closed a $15 million Series A investment round with Index Ventures, Thrive Capital, and Simon Ventures.

Three months later, StockX, the self-proclaimed “stock market of things,” secured $44 million in its second funding round. The company, which has more than 80,000 products listed on its website and in the fourth quarter of 2018 passed a $1 billion GMV run rate — up roughly seven times on 2017 — now boasts a roster of celebrity investors, including Eminem, Mark Wahlberg, Don C, Steve Aoki, Karlie Kloss, and Scooter Braun.

The biggest milestone to date, however, was reached in December 2018 when London-based fashion marketplace Farfetch acquired Stadium Goods for an impressive $250 million, in a deal that will allow the reseller to leverage Farfetch’s rich tech expertise, cross-border logistical experience, and giant customer base. Overall, bringing the business to the next level.

For GOAT, the deal makes sense given the company’s inventory currently exists out of 25 percent general release sneakers offered at or below retail price. “We do see retail and resell merging,” GOAT’s Eddy Lu told Highsnobiety last month. “It’s not just about flipping shoes anymore. People are coming to us now to buy sneakers, period.” As a result it wouldn’t be surprising to see Foot Locker and GOAT working more closely together, inventory-wise, going forward.

GOAT currently has more than 11 million users, up from 2.5 million a year ago. GOAT’s supply has also grown from 200,000 sneaker listings to 750,000 in the same time frame while its revenue has grown 500 percent as a result. GOAT says that its most lucrative sellers have sold more than $10 million in sneakers each, up from $2 million in 2017.

The numbers are reason enough to justify Foot Locker’s investment of this size into GOAT. But there are also other benefits in investing in a fast-growing sneaker reselling platform like GOAT.

With the sneaker resell market as a whole becoming more accepted by consumers and more authoritative in the sneaker space at large, in the past two years, players in the secondary market like GOAT have become direct competition of traditional wholesalers such as Foot Locker. Given the way the market, and consumers, are shopping today, the investment is not just strategic, it’s necessary for Foot Locker’s relevance among young shoppers and ultimately its long-term survival.

Closing out the Festival after a barnstorming performance at Deepdale in March are Radio 2 Folk Award nominees, the brilliantly energetic and eclectic Gentlemen of Few, preceded by the country blues of Wales’ finest, The Goat Roper Rodeo Band, fresh from launching their latest album produced by The Magic Numbers’ Romeo Stodart. The day is a cornucopia of hugely exciting original roots, Americana and country music from Smith & Brewer; The Tin Heart Troubadours in a special concert in St Mary’s Church with string quartet; local folk band Rattlebox; wonderful local songwriters Marina Florance, Bernard Hoskin and Alton Wahlberg, with Alton also organising a showcase session for his AWMTV project, supporting and promoting the best new talent in East Anglia – Dusky Sunday, BAILEY, Allie Tooke and Keith Sadler will be performing brunch sets on The Orchard Stage; with rising local country star Vic Allen with her band, and fantastic Norwich-based alternative rock and soul band Galli completing the full-to-bursting lineup for Sunday. Farfetch bets on sneakers with $250M Stadium Goods acquisition

The lines between streetwear and luxury fashion have blurred in recent years, especially as excitement around sneaker brands like Yeezy and Off-White has soared.

A marriage between a luxury fashion marketplace and a sneaker and streetwear reseller seems like a natural way to wrap up M&A in 2018. With that said, Farfetch has acquired New York-based Stadium Goods, opting to pay $250 million for the sneaker startup in a combination of cash and Farfetch stock. Headquartered in London, Farfetch went public on the New York Stock Exchange in September, pricing its shares at $20 apiece and raising $885 million in the process.

What’s more impressive is Stadium Goods’ journey to exit. The company, which sells new and deadstock products online and in a brick-and-mortar store in New York’s Soho neighborhood, was founded in 2015 by John McPheters and Jed Stiller and had only raised $4.6 million in venture capital funding from Forerunner Ventures, The Chernin Group and Mark Cuban, who is an advisor to the startup.

“There was a time not that long ago when you couldn’t wear sneakers and streetwear to nightclubs and restaurants,” McPheters, Stadium Goods’ chief executive officer, told TechCrunch. “But adoption of the stuff we are selling has continued to grow at a very large clip.”

The sale to Farfetch not only provides a major boost to the sneaker tech ecosystem, which is surprisingly much larger than those who aren’t familiar with it might have guessed, but its yet another successful e-commerce exit for Kirsten Green, the founding partner of Forerunner Ventures, who’s also backed Dollar Shave Club and Bonobos — direct-to-consumer retailers that sold for $1 billion and $310 million, respectively.

Farfetch boarded the sneaker and streetwear hype train a while ago when it incorporated brands like Nike’s Jordan, some of which sell for more than $1,000 on the site. The company doubled down on sneakers earlier this year when it began integrating Stadium Goods products. After noticing high-demand, Farfetch founder and CEO José Neves tells TechCrunch, they began acquisition talks with the startup. Stadium Goods will remain independent as part of the deal, with McPheters and Stiller staying on to lead the brand forward. The company’s portfolio of shoes and apparel will be fully available on Farfetch’s e-commerce platform in the coming months.

“Luxury streetwear is a significant part of our business,” Neves said. “For many years now, we have had the largest collection of Off-White, for example, on the internet … What we did not have was the resale, secondary market. It was clear this was an interesting opportunity.”

Together, Farfetch and Stadium Goods will focus on international growth. McPheters tells TechCrunch Stadium Goods already had a significant international base of customers, but a partnership with Farfetch gives them the tools to go places they’ve never been before.

“In my mind, we are only just beginning,” McPheters said. “As more and more customers get comfortable with purchasing aftermarket items, we are going to continue to grow.”

The global athletic footwear industry is expected to be worth $95 billion by 2025. Meanwhile, sneaker resale is a $1 billion market and growing, fueled by a cohort of startups making it easier than ever for sneakerheads to locate rare shoes online and have them delivered to their doorsteps. That includes Stadium Goods, Flight Club, GOAT and StockX.

All four of these resellers, which ensure authentication of their products, are backed by VCs. Flight Club merged with GOAT earlier this year and together the pair raised a $60 million Series C. Before that, GOAT had brought in $30 million for its secondary market for collectible shoes from Accel, Upfront Ventures, Matrix Partners and more. StockX, for its part, has raised just over $50 million from Mark Wahlberg, Scooter Braun, Wale, Eminem, SV Angel and others.

According to Crunchbase data, VCs have funneled more than $200 million into sneaker startups in the past two years. Now, given the size of Stadium Goods’ exit, investment in the space will likely pick up significantly as other VCs hope to land an exit multiple that substantial.

Whether the reselling market will continue to expand is in question. Some have called it a bubble poised to burst, claiming it’s at its “height in popularity.” Why? Because corporate shoe brands like Nike and Adidas are keenly aware of the secondary market for their products and how they, too, can profit from it. If they decide to increase the supply of particular shoe models hot on the secondary market, they can radically disrupt the reseller economy. McPheters, however, says this doesn’t concern him.

“Brands need to strangle the demand to keep driving excitement in the space,” McPheters said. “They count on that hype to really move the needle.”
