Out the window, December is in full bloom: ink-black by half five and the city lights warm against the expanse, the scarf on the chair a reminder of the biting cold she’d left at the door. By the window she sits with a boy, pretty from every angle and the picture of attentivity. Even the lamplight is strangely sentimental — romantic, even — if not for that one thing.

The thing: her date with the police tomorrow. Better a rendezvous with the devil; that would be an easier pill to swallow. Luckily for her Seunghan is all things clever, twice as handsome, and evidently sympathetic to her barefaced pleas for assistance. She’d be hard-pressed to find anyone so willing to incriminate themselves in someone else’s crime (though to be fair he’d been scheduled for one as well, and she was a big believer in collaborative effort). And, okay, sure, a little bit of it was because she wanted to spend time with him. A little.

Probably not the best thing to say to this very nice boy who was helping her out. A bit too forward, maybe. Totally not her style anymore.

They’ve run through a generic list of questions already, him bouncing them off to her at light speed in likely a far more lenient imitation of the real interview. It’s the rush that gets her, the thoughts too fast for her tongue, the nerves taking over and causing her to short-circuit. Mid-(fake)interrogation she feels her throat closing after stumbling over too many words and has to signal to stop. Track record so far: not great.

“I’m nervous.” Let it go unsaid that in part it’s because of him. Fuck her, she’s never been great at hiding her heart, sleeve notwithstanding. “I— ugh.” Her hands twist as if to expel her anxiety, the only thing to show for her effort being the crescent shaped indents on her palms. In a huff she sinks further into the sofa, head lolling over the backrest as she looks over at Seunghan. “This is really hard.”

As if the detectives would make it easy. Be a big girl, Soojung.

“Can we try again?” And, in a moment of levity, a smile and a tease. “Be a little nicer this time.”

shotaro would most definitely take you on a picnic, he just feels like a picnic kind of guy. he’d pack so many cute little snacks and even make the meal into characters such as ‘ hello kitty ‘ just to see you smile. i feel like he’d just love to spend quality time with you. both of your feelings are already known to each other, but for shotaro, he just LOVES spending time together, no matter what you guys will do. watching other people on the grass while you talk about anything and everything, sharing old stories and listening to music.

eunseok’s seems a bit basic, as he loves rocks, but he would definitely take you to a crafts store where you guys can decorate your own rocks / stones. he’d paint all sorts of characters while thinking of you and you guys would spend hours in there. might i even say you guys stay up until the shop closes. but at the end of the day, he would hand you a bag full of the rocks he painted and kiss your forehead. giving you the rocks as a first date gift.

★ — sungchan ?!

some people might think sungchans first date idea would be something energetic and interesting, but somehow i feel like he would much rather have a quiet, indoors, cuddle party. seems a bit much for a first date, but thats what pulls you both closer. you both take turns putting on your favorite movies, you watch old cartoons and make popcorn, even order pizza. he’d definitely be the kind of guy to have an arm around your waist, but waits for you to lean in first for a cuddle. he’d want you to be comfortable at your own pace. but once you guys cuddle, he never lets you go. <3

i feel like wonbin would be so nervous and have a whole plan set out for your first date, but as you two go along the plans, it all starts to not work out. like he’d take you on a drive to a beautiful place, but on your way back, the car stops working. he’d get so embarrassed and awkward, apologizing so many times but that is why you like him, nothing is perfect. you like the reality of it all. being with him feels like a dream, but you get to help build the dream with him. you’d hold his face and give him a soft peck before suggesting to call a car shop, while you admire the view. so, in the end it worked out anyway!

★ — seunghan ?!

seunghan is definitely a disney land kind of boyfriend. seunghan IS the disney princess. he would love bringing you on his favorite rides and meeting his favorite characters with you. he’d excitedly show you where to get the good food and buy you so many plushies. he’d be so cute omg, you would find it so enjoyable to watch him be so excited about such little things. he would definitely also buy accessories to dress you both up like characters.

sohee feels like a gamer kind of guy, he’d take you do a gaming cafè, then to an arcade, and then back home to play more games. but he’d also be very competitive, you guys would have fun bickering and making bets on who will win which game. playfully push each other to try and make the other lose, i feel like he would lose a lot to you but the one time he actually did win, he would jump up and dance around before pulling you into a quick kiss. but he’d get so embarrassed and shy afterwards which you find just so adorable of him.

anton would definitely want to do crafts and stuff with you. more likely, legos. he loves his legos, but you as well. you guys would buy all sorts of sets and take them back to his place to build them. he would put on music and then the building starts! i feel like even though you both like each other romantically, he’d be a great mix of boyfriend and best friend. you guys would bicker and push each other around to see who could build faster. but by the end of it, you won. at least you thought you did, anton would then show you his set. which was you. this man would build you with legos and give it to you as a gift.

SEUNGHAN —

“and you?” the music resumes and he pulls her closer this time, his touches certain as it was, all those years ago. “do you always go around bewitching strangers at parties? or did you save that specially for me?”

She senses the shift in him as sure as if something inside her’s shifted too. Of course she would, because he’s him and she’s her. Like the back of her hand, the back of her eyelids, she knows him. Her body is a tuning fork sounding out his specific frequency. She’s spent so long trying to sing another song only for her to find it the moment she’s in his hands.

There are things that never leave you no matter how hard you try. She knows this now. That doesn’t make this hurt any less.

Memory pales in comparison to the reality of him: the certainty in his touch, the tenderness as if he thought her too precious, something he wanted to protect. The feeling in his eyes that she won’t name. Here, the reality of the man she’d let into her heart like it had been an open door, like she’d been welcoming him home. And here, the reality of the aftermath: the hole inside her. Four walls and no roof; an empty, cold room.

Collateral damage. She has to remember that that’s all she’d ever been. How easy it was to forget that the moment his hands were on her waist. How easy it would be to soften into him, to look up at him and say his name. But still, the room; the hole; the memory. All these things that won’t let her forget.

The way he’s looking at her is almost unbearable. Call her a coward, but she has to look away.

“Don’t be silly. I’d hardly say you’re special.” It’s as much steel as she can forge in the moment, but she hopes it cuts him a little. A small taste of the knife he’d slid into her that day, the one she’d kept in her stomach all this time, waiting. “Maybe you were just the first person who asked for a dance.”

Her words divide and her body follows. The grip on his shoulder loosens, the air between them cools. The illusion of intimacy, of openness, is shuttered behind her sidelong gaze. But she can’t look up at him — won’t — for fear of falling back under his spell.

It’s all too much.

“I should go.” The hour; the heat; the fact that she actually does have a man waiting for her out there. Any excuse to untangle herself from the situation. She steps back, uncaring that they’re only halfway through the dance. Her arms fold across her chest as she stands rigid, at attention. When scared, make yourself tall. “My date’s probably waiting to take me home.”

Now that — that she hopes stings.

There is the feeling that the world is off-kilter, axis tilted slightly enough that everything looks normal, feels normal, but is not. Like the wrong side of the bed, two left shoes, the masks slipping off the faces of those around her, frozen from seeing their skeleton in the closet. There are things you learn to keep to yourself in the face of total ruin: your sentiment, your pain, your heart. She’s never learned those lessons, but everyone else’s capacity for stoicism makes up for it. Or used to.

Men are all weak before death – or, at least, the semblance of it. 

Mercifully the hallway is empty of bodies, everyone still transfixed by the spectacle lying face-down in the water. The hope is that distance makes the heart grow still, so she flees for survival’s sake. Self-preservation. The click of her shoes is sharp through the foyer, the hall, stopping at the library  – as far away from ground zero as possible. Her hands splay, the door opens, and she tumbles in light-headed.

It’s cool here. Her cheeks are warm. Mindlessly, her fingers reach up to them, pulling back when she feels the moisture, the salt. It’s all coming back now.

The door opens; on instinct, she turns.

“Not now.” The ‘please’ is silent. She’s sure he can see it in her eyes. Preferably, the time would be never. Never wouldn’t be long enough for this– this whatever this is. She likes to think she’s a big girl capable of solving her big girl problems, but he’s the exception. Hasn’t he always been?

“I–” A step forward to run away, except it’s a step toward him. The body always betrays. The lessons she’s never learned come to the surface as she looks at his face.

Pin-drop silence. It’s never been louder.

I'm curious to know your thoughts on riize? I know some people think they don't feel like an sm group but tbh I think they are being similar to like 90s era kpop groups. Anyway I actually have been enjoying their music and wow watching them dance impossible choreo is so fun.

love them! i really like the musical directions they've gone in and how they do embody the feeling of early boyband much more than most other groups have managed to. unsurprising that they do some challenging choreo, bc how could you not with shotaro right there, and i'm really glad impossible got the full house treatment bc i crave the fancy footwork like choicest of drugs. i'm also a big fan of all the music that they've released so far, and i love how their new ep is so delightfully dated (complimentary). that being said, i DO agree that they don't have the full sm sound, simply because yyj isn't there to help produce them. i've said it before and i will say it again, he was so fundamentally instrumental to the 'sm sound' and even to the sound of kpop itself, that now that he's gone no group is ever going to sound like that again. it's just the truth. i think the current a&r team are doing a great job with riize (we will not speak of any other groups.) but we could have had so, so much more.
