9, 42, and 45 for a sick, sneezy vash please, if that’s okay? 😄
Thank you for the ask, of course that's okay!! (it does feature a hint of W/olfwood action too, just a smiiidge, hope that's alright hehe~ It's also a V/ashwood story since, well, I figured that would be alright~!) 1.9k words, prompts 9, 42, and 45, story under cut! 9. “You’re trembling.” 42. “Baby, you’re all sniffly.” 45. “Your nose is literally twitching.” (Brief mentions of anxiety just incase anyone doesn't like that!)
~~~~~~~
“hn’chh-! hh’keshh-! ‘Scuse me, sorry.”
“I told ya, no need for the ‘pologies.”
“Y- you did but it’s a hahh... habit. hek’ishh-! Sor-”
A dark look from Wolfwood cuts off the apology, Vash being reduced to stuttering out some nonsensical syllables in his effort to recover. His leg is still, but there’s constant movement in his hands as they attempt to find something to grab onto. Anxiety was never a stranger to the man, despite apparent lack of concern for his own safety most of the time.
The town they find themselves in doesn’t have a motel, which isn’t that unique in these parts. They’ve grown quite used to sharing a room, or even just a bed, wherever they could find one. For instance, they’re currently sharing a guest room above the town bar. Not an awful crashpad, a couch, nice radio, their own bathroom.
It’s secluded from the rest of the bar too, giving them a bit of privacy. Sliding onto the bed, Wolfwood motions for Vash to join him. Surprise crosses his sharp features as the request is denied. Instead, Vash points himself towards the couch, offering a wave over his shoulder as he spins away. ‘Well that’s new…’
“What, suddenly too good to share a bed with me, Blondie?”
“Wh- what? No, not at all! I just… I figured you’d- en’chh-! ih’tshhie-! Excuse me, sorry. Where was I..? Oh right, m- maybe you’d want it to yourself this time and I don’t mind t- taking the couch.”
“‘Cause of your cold? I don’t care, now get over here.”
“Because of my- what? I’m… I’m not sick?”
Wolfwood doesn’t reply, instead he lets the uncomfortable silence settle over the room as he watches Vash. ‘Either he’s playing dumb, and doesn’t want to admit it, or the needle noggin really didn’t notice. Gotta know which before I make my move.’ Under the weight of tension starting to spread through the air, Vash gives a heavy sigh. The breath comes out shaky as his body vibrates, hands starting to rub his arms.
“You’re literally trembling. You tryna tell me that ain’t shivers?”
“It’s not! Well okay… I mean it is shivering, but not from sickness, it’s just cold in here, that’s all! ennchh-! Sorry, excuse me.”
The sneeze brings a fresh round of shudders as Wolfwood raises a brow at the display. ‘So denial it is then. If it was cold in ‘ere I’d’ve noticed long before him.’ A blessing almost slips out, but that’ll just lead to a new round of apologies. Right now it’s more important to get an admittance and go from there.
“Blondie, we’re in a fuckin’ desert. It’s not cold anywhere.”
“W- well they must have the air on! Or… or something… probably the air, b- because it’s so hot out, so they uh… they want it to be cool indoors.”
“Guess I should go ask ‘em to turn it off-”
“Hey- wait no, uh… it’s- it’s actually starting to uh… warm up..? D- don’t bother them. hk’ishiee-! Sorry. They let us stay here, I don’t- I mean we don’t want to be a burden on them-”
A hint of pride starts to break through Wolfwood’s mind as he grins. ‘And there it is. Gotcha.’ Vash has always been hesitant to be a burden. Not a horrible mindset to have for most people, ‘Hell, a few could use more of it’. The problem is that his definition of ‘burden’ includes things such as eating, sleeping, breathing, or simply existing when he’s not actively helping in some way.
Sickness was high on his list of ‘things that make me a burden on everyone I come in contact with’, despite Wolfwood’s constant reminders that he doesn’t mind. However, there is something above it, and that’s ‘bothering someone else’, especially when it’s for a made up reason. Given the choice between admitting sickness or waking the bartender to ask them to turn off the ‘air’ that doesn’t exist, well…
“-Okay fine. I might be… a little bit sick… but- hh’ishh’iee-! hehh- en’chhh-! heh’kshh’iew-!”
“Blessin’”
“Thank you, sorry, it’s really not that bad!”
“Then get in bed ‘fore it gets worse.”
“I uh… I really don’t think that’s-”
“I’ll even read from the book I’ve been finishin’. But that's a limited time offer, Blondie. Goin’ once, goin’ twice-”
Before he can start the next word, Vash hurls himself towards the bed, an excited set of vibrations starting to replace the shivers. Wolfwood chuckles, lifting the blanket from his legs to wrap it around Vash, giving his shoulders a light squeeze. In response the huddled form leans into his lap, head resting against his chest.
“Ready?”
“Yehh… yep!”
“Alright. The second reason he realized she was gone was from the smell. The air had lost a sweetness. One he’d grown so used to he hardly recognized it anymore. That is, until it was gone. -----”
Wolfwood continues reading, his focus being drawn away from the world once more. ‘Would’ve thought romance books were more Blondie’s thing, but… well… after he gave me that one about the garden love story… I guess I could understand the appeal… But only because Vash likes it when I read them. That’s all.’ No one else can hear him, but Wolfwood still feels the need to justify the surge of emotion starting to creep through his heart.
Maybe it was the fact Vash had given him them. Maybe it was the fact that blondie was gazing up with a hazy adoration as each word leaves his throat. Doesn’t really matter why. All that matters is how the words seem to glide off the page, through his deep voice to dance around their heads, playing out each scene as he reads them. This sensation is short lived though, as soon he feels himself snapping back to the bedroom where a soft sound has begun.
“hkk-! guhh…”
“Brushing the branches from his uh… from his face, he starts to cut through the dense forest.”
“heHh-! hhh… Snnff-”
“T- the branches, oh wait read that already, ah here we go. The dense forest. Eyes seem to be peering at him through the-”
“hahHhh- snff- hkIH-! hehh…”
“Through the, uh, the-”
“hhih-!”
“Christ, Blondie. Just sneeze already.”
Vash’s head pops out from its blanket cocoon against Wolfwood’s chest, a pink tint spread across his cheeks that has nothing to do with his cold. Bringing up a single finger to lightly rub his nose, Vash tries to offer a sincere smile. What instead crosses his face is a look that just screams itchy. Wolfwood feels a sympathy tickle through his own nose.
“Wh- what?”
“Your nose is literally twitching. You’re makin’ me itchy from the look of it. Jus’ sneeze, it’s okay. I’ll even pause my readin’.”
“I- I don’t… okay yehh… yes I do- I’m so sorry ehH-!”
“Don’t ‘pologize. Nothin’ to be ‘shamed of.”
“eH’tmmfshh-! hh’mmshhii-! hk’ishh’ieee-!”
He attempts to muffle the first two into his hand, the third escaping with a pitch that sounds incredibly unsatisfying. ‘No wonder he always has these long drawn out fits. Those sound like they do nothin’ to relieve the itch.’ Pausing his analysis, Wolfwood leans towards the nightstand, grabbing a handful of tissues and pressing them into Vash’s unused hand.
A timid smile meets the gesture as Vash brings them to his nose, humming a sigh. The action seems to bring a new level of irritation, his breath snaring as the tissues are gripped tighter. It teases him for a minute, Wolfwood choking back a laugh at the whimper the tissues barely muffle. Finally, after what seems like a lifetime, a desperate “hnnchh-! ih’tishiee-! keshh’ii-!” break through. Wolfwood lets a knuckle crush his own nose, sympathy waves running through it again.
“Blessin’.”
“Thanks. Sor-”
“You’re only welcome if you don’t finish that apology.”
“-So are you gonna keep reading..? hih’ishhiee-! hk’ieshh-! Excuse me.”
“Blessin’s. Good save, Blondie. Remind me where we were?”
“Eyes in the- eh’kshhiee-! forest.”
“Blessin’, alright. So- wait… hold on a sec.”
Wolfwood lets the book rest on his knees, staring up through his sunglasses at the ceiling. Vash attempts to follow his gaze, but can’t notice anything worth staring at. Deciding to ask, Vash leans up to meet his eyes. Hardly a noise escapes before Wolfwood holds up a finger to silence him, tilting his sunglasses down and blinking through the brightness.
“huh’yIEZzshh’oo-! ai’GNZSHhh’oo-! Whew, that’s better.”
“Oh- bless you! Did- did I get-”
“No you didn' get me sick. My immune system ain’t nearly as fragile as yours.”
“Hey! Well then, is- hh’tieshh’ii-! Excuse me. Is something bothering you?”
“Nah, jus’ a tickle. Think it was ‘cause of the itchy look you were wearin’.”
“Oh, okay! S- sorry…”
“Nothin’ to be sorry for, Blondie. Now, back to the book?"
"Yes!"
"Eyes seem to be peering at him through the darkness. Watching his every step, daring him to come closer. Daring him to betray his heart alongside his kingdom. What did they know? Surely not his heart. That was something that couldn’t be known by anyone, not after her. ------.”
Wolfwood feels the words flow from him once more, almost before his eyes can trace their forms on the page. Figures begin their dance, chasing each other in beautiful patterns through the humid air. The only thing pulling him from the daydream that he finds himself in far too often with Vash is the sound of constant sniffles.
There is an outright refusal to address the noises, so instead Wolfwood continues reading, making it through another two chapters before giving in and setting the book back down. Vash looks up with an innocent gaze, absentmindedly rubbing his palm against his nose as another sniff breaks free.
“Baby, you’re all sniffly. You can blow your nose.”
The pet name gets the reaction it was meant to, Vash suddenly laser focused on Wolfwood’s every word. ‘Alright, easy now with this next part. He’s jus’ about there, gotta be delicate. Which… has never really been my strong suit.’ There’s a hint of unease beneath Vash’s smile, palm crushing against his face again.
“I know you’re sick, Vash. You told me that earlier. So you can drop the ruse.”
“We- well…”
“It’s just us.”
Vash flushes as Wolfwood passes him another handful of tissues, but brings them to his nose anyways. He turns away, ever mindful of others, and blows a couple times. The first seems unsuccessful, but by the third he manages to get a semblance of airflow through his sinuses.
Giving a heady sigh of relief, Vash turns back to Wolfwood, mouth open as if to form words. He never gets the chance, the next breath through his sensitive nasal passages bringing his hands up to his face by instinct. Wolfwood chuckles, letting a hand drop to rub his back through the fit.
“hH’ieshh’ie-! keshhh’iee-! hihh- tnnshhii-! Ih’tieshhiee-!”
“Blessin’s. Heh, you’re awfully adorable at times, Blondie.”
“I am no- heH’ishh-! hk’ishh-! tieshh’iee-! not!”
Humming out another laugh, Wolfwood brushes the hair from Vash’s warm skin, planting a kiss on his forehead. Vash responds with a sigh, airy and light, before he sinks back into Wolfwood’s chest, wrapping himself deeper into the blanket. A smirk crosses Wolfwood’s face, ‘Not cute, huh?’ before he lifts the book once more.
There, in the safety of Wolfwood’s embrace, Vash finds himself drifting off to sleep, figures dancing through his mind as the deep voice fades off into a peaceful darkness.
post-trimax vash meets stampede wolfwood
[ID: Black and white comic of Vash and Wolfwood of their Stampede versions. The comic starts with Wolfwood continuing off a conversation, saying “I didn’t mean t’say anythin’ bad to her. She just took it the wrong way. But anyway...” Wolfwood speaks with a hand gestured flippantly while Vash, who’s seated next to him, just listens. Vash thinks to himself, “Talks more about himself... Honest expressions... Immature, though he was pretty immature too.” He smiles and continues to think, “And yet...”
A panel of Vash’s eye directed now to the sky. He thinks, “Some things are bound to be the same with us...” He thinks of a memory, the version from Maximum of him and Wolfwood, back shown as they chatted underneath two moons, one moon with a hole through it. Vash continues, “Isn’t that right, W-“ His thoughts are interrupted by Wolfwood coming into a view, a close up his deadpan expression. Vash utters out “-olfwood..?” with a nervous expression. He starts to explain, “Um. Sorry if it seemed like I wasn’t listening, I was! So, let’s keep talking?”
Vash smiles and puts his hands together as he says, “okay?” Wolfwood glares at him with gritted teeth and Vash immediately remembers, “Right, he’s more short-tempered...” He continues to think, “Maybe Plan B works with him—“ before he’s grabbed by his coat collar aggressively and changes thoughts, “OK, never mind, brace for impact..!” But he’s surprised when he’s tugged instead, him and Wolfwood flops against the ground. Wolfwood puts an arm over Vash and says, “I don’t need to be entertained, blondie. If yer tired, we can go to sleep.”
Two close up panels of Wolfwood and Vash’s eyes looking at each other, Wolfwood taking off Vash’s glasses as he says, “Am I wrong?” Vash thinks to himself, “Actually... I was being genuine when I said I wanted to keep talking. I don’t feel tired at all. But, I think you know this body more than I do.”
Vash’s thoughts continue, “I can’t deny the me you’re fond of from being taken care of. And I could never deny your kindness. Even though...” Vash finally smiles and says, “You’re not wrong...” Wolfwood smiles back before tugging Vash closer and says, “Then, let’s sleep.” Vash asks, “Should we get a blanket?” Wolfwood asks, “Why?” before kissing Vash on the cheek, “I’ll keep you warm.” Vash puts his face into both his hands and flushes. Wolfwood smiles cheekily and asks, “What?” Vash responds, “I was caught off guard..” Wolfwood says, “You’ve said worse though.” Vash responds, “Did I...” The panel phases out and the dialogue returns to Vash’s thoughts. He thinks, “I want to stay a bit longer. Talk a bit longer.
You’re tired here too. The future is always going to be unfair to you. I want to protect you from it. I want to hold you close so you won’t go far.” The thoughts overlap the scene of Wolfwood now sleeping peacefully against Vash with an arm over him, Vash’s jacket draped against him as a blanket. Vash looks at him and a small thought bubble thinks, “He can fall asleep first...” His previous thoughts continue, “I know I can’t. I already had that chance.” A close up of Vash putting his hand over Wolfwood’s. He continues, “I wasn’t capable once, I can’t be sure I’d be capable a second time. And in a way...”
Vash’s thoughts continue with the back drop of the sky, Stampede’s sky of two moons without holes, “Some things are bound to be the same. But I know you’ll be loved again and again in a way I’d never know.” A split panel, one half contains the sleeping face of Wolfwood from Stampede, the other of Wolfwood from Trimax. In turn, the Vash lying down looking fondly at Wolfwood shifts to the post Trimax Vash while the other versions, Stampede and earlier Trimax, are faintly drawn next to him doing the same. Vash closes his eyes and finally drifts to sleep as the final text reads, “Goodnight, Wolfwood.”
Thinking about V//ash and W//olfwood riding one of those large birds in a similar manner two people may ride a horse. V//ash steering and W//olfwood with his arms around the blond’s waist.
Only the undertaker has a VERY itchy nose, be it from a bad cold or an allergy, and is forced to stifle and rub his nose into the others neck.
V//ash, who has the kink, is VERY distracted from steering.
30 + 46 for v/ashw/ood (with v/ash sneezing) if you feel like it? I love what you’ve been writing for these!
Thank you for the ask, non!! and I'm so glad you've been enjoying them~~ Here is some V/ashwood, and I decided to make them actually an item for this one just for the heck of it, so hopefully that's acceptable hehe~ (Not confirmed dating, but they do kiss, so you can think of it as 'actual boyfriends' or just 'they kiss but haven't talked about it', whatever you would like!) 1.8k, prompts 30 and 46, story under cut! 30. “What’s got you all worked up?” 46. Touching their nose leading to a sneeze (References to swearing and tiny mention of drinking, just in case anyone doesn't like those!)
~~~~~~~
“ketNG’uhh-!”
“ehTDGnn’huh-!”
"hh’nGkT-!”
By the third, Wolfwood’s book is forgotten on the table, attention solely on the spiky haired man lounging on the couch next to him. In response to his intense gaze, Vash blushes, then raises a fist to crush his nose as another breaks through his defenses.
“haH’EnxgD’uhh-!”
“Are ya almost finished, blondie? My reading is slightly disturbed by the constant noise.”
A sheepish grin is the response, Vash pawing at his nose once more in what Wolfwood can only assume is an attempt to starve off further interruptions. ‘I don’t think he’s sick, he’d be practically quarantining himself to avoid getting us all sick like usual by now.’
“Yeah- yeah, sorry. I’m all done.”
“If you say so.”
Just as the book enters Wolfwood’s hands he hears Vash’s breath catch. His eyebrows climb seemingly on their own as he meets Vash’s gaze over the book.
“You sure you’re done?”
“heHh-! Yea- aHHhh-! Okay fine, I lied, s- sorry I have to- heh’NGTzz’uh-! knDT’huh-!”
“Don’t need to ‘pologize, it’s just sneezing.”
“ndJZT-! Thanks, sor- I mean, uh, thanks..? Or maybe I should sa-”
“Spikey, you’re making my head spin. Just take a breath, you ain’t in trouble.”
Wolfwood retorts, not missing the wince Vash lets out as he attempts to inhale through his nose. ‘Obviously congested. Given the way he’s holding those in, I’m surprised his head ain’t exploded yet.’
“hH’dNch’taa-!”
“Alright, what’s got you all worked up?”
“Wha- nothing, I’m alright, nothing’s up. haH’INgtchaa-! heHh-! Ihh… hehH-! hNGT-!guhhh…”
The heady sigh that follows sends shivers up Wolfwood’s spine. ‘Christ, if that made me uncomfortable, the hell is it doing to him? Guess I smacked him a little too hard last time he let one out, slapped the common sense right out of his head. The whole point was that we were hiding, not that he was sneezing.’ And yet, instead of voicing his concern, Wolfwood takes a role he finds easier, letting a witty retort slide out.
“Well that’s obviously not nothing. I wasn’t born yesterday needle noggin, despite you apparently thinkin’ I was.”
Pausing for a second, Wolfwood lets the concern bubbling up in his chest spill over into his tone, placing a hand on Vash’s leg, eyes softening.
“Just tell me what’s wrong. I can’t help if I don’t know what’s happening.”
“Okay, alright… I might be just a touch sensitive…”
“Common knowledge.”
Vash lets out a grin, raising a hand to his chest mockingly, before his rambling continues, leg starting to shake, bringing the couch along with him. Trying to maintain focus, Wolfwood can feel his attention being drawn to the vibrations. Something within him stirs, memories starting to flood into his mind. The car shaking around him, watching Vash sleep, the way his tongue dips out against his lips whenever they hit a bump… ‘Damn it, focus!’
“Ouch, Nicholas. What I meant was- well okay maybe it’s easier to explain- well see- hold on… eh’KnDG’taa-! Scuse me, sorry, so what happened was, well-”
“Just spit it out already, blondie. Beginning to feel like a rock during an earthquake over here.”
A blush starts to pierce its way through Vash’s soft features, a warm tint mirroring the action on Wolfwood’s own cheeks. ‘Why does he look so damn adorable when he’s blushing? It’s wholly unfair. How’s a man supposed to stand firm when the accused looks so-’
“Meryl bought some kind of new spray”
The voice slices through his thoughts, sending Wolfwood careening back into the conversation.
“What?”
“She bought this new spray, I think it might be a perfume, but it might also be something for the car… all I know is she was using it earlier and I’m-”
A silence settles, Wolfwood finding himself watching Vash’s face contort as another sneeze works its way through his system. ‘It starts with his nose scrunching, then his eyes flutter, but they don’t shut. He’s fighting it, his hand comes up to rub it away, but the action only leads to his chest shaking… likely he just made the tickle worse. Then, sensing defeat, he’ll pinch his nose shut and-’
“INgT-!”
‘But his nose isn’t so easily satisfied. He barely gets another breath in before-’
“heH’KNDT-!uhh…”
‘And since he’s still not let it out, there’s gonna be a thir-’
‘H’AInG’taa-!”
‘So far there’s always been at least three.’
“Slightly allergic.”
“‘Slightly allergic’, huh? Just when did you come in contact with this spray?”
“M- maybe an hour ago..?”
“And you’re still sneezing this much? That’s hardly ‘slight’, Vash.”
At the sound of his name, Wolfwood watches Vash’s face darken three shades, a bright smile bursting onto his cheeks. It’s quickly quelled by the incessant tickle returning once more, eyes going blank as his mouth tips open.
“hh’GnDT-! aINGT’uhh-! haH’DTN’shh-!”
“Bless you.”
“Thanks, sorry. It really isn’t that bad, I promise, it’s just that… well… I came in here immediately after, and you were here already, so…”
“So?” “It’s a bit embarrassing…”
Wolfwood laughs, gesturing to Vash with a shit-eating grin plastered across his face.
“Trust me, I’ve dealt with embarrassing. Have you seen you after a few too many drinks? You were hitting on a rock for almost 20 minutes.”
The comments trigger a deeper blush, Vash lightly swatting at his arm, but they seem to serve their purpose. His eyes have lost the hint of anxiety they were holding before, replacing it with an air of warmth that’s so distinctly Vash.
“I just need to… sneeze it out. It usually stops after that.”
“That’s all? In that case, I doubt holdin’ em in like you’ve been doin’ is helping remedy the situation.”
“N- not exactly… but it’s a habit!”
“Where was this ‘habit’ when we were hiding?”
Vash’s response is to rub his nose again, a timid whine escaping as he lets out a “That happened one time…” in reply. Wolfwood smirks, raising himself from the chair and strutting over to the couch, perching beside him, prompting Vash to sit up.
“What are yo-”
Wolfwood silences him by resting a finger between his eyes, laughter vibrating his chest as Vash attempts to cross his eyes to get a better look. Slowly Wolfwood lets his finger trace the bridge of Vash’s nose, the appendage trembling at the attention. He pauses right before the tip, making sure Vash meets his gaze.
“Don’t you dare hold these in, blondie. This is a one time deal, I won’t be offering this service again.”
A nod is all he gets in reply, Vash’s tongue sticking out between his teeth as he gasps, the hitchy quality of each inhale suggesting nodding is all he’s able to manage. Wolfwood responds by tapping the tip, letting his finger brush against his flaring nostrils as he pull away. The result is instant.
“heIShh’aa-! heh’aiyshh’oo-!”
Vash manages to get his arm up in time to cover the third, “eH’GNshH’iuhh-!” gesturing frantically at Wolfwood for something better to cover with.
“Nic- hddjzshhh’oo-! hh’AIYDZshh’oo-! Nicholas- hAiYshh’aa-! T-tihhSHH’oo-!”
“Managing to ask for a tissue with a sneeze, pretty impressive, blondie.”
The watery glare he’s met with is entirely for show, the giggle between shaky exhales giving away the truth. ‘He never was able to hide what he really felt. I used to think it was a curse, but the more time I spend with him, the more I’m beginning to think it’s a gift. One I don’t share.’
“eHH’GZshh’oo-! Nico, pleaahhh-! Please! hh’DjZshh’aa-!”
“Huh? Oh, right, sorry. I just have a couple napkins I swiped from the car, but they’re clean, if you wan-”
He’s cut off as Vash grabs them, face never leaving his arm. Wolfwood finds himself rubbing loose circles on Vash’s back, chuckling lightly at the groan that escapes after the deep blow. Brushing away the hairs that fell loose during the fit, Wolfwood offers a murmured blessing.
“Bless you.”
“Th- thank you… and uh… sorry about- eH’dzShh’aa-! Well, that… I know it’s gros-”
Wolfwood cuts him off with an eye roll, grabbing Vash’s arm and dragging him into a deep kiss. It’s not the first time, and it won’t be the last, but without fail Vash collapses into the embrace every time it occurs. And, without fail, Wolfwood has to break it so they can both breathe, Vash seemingly content to faint in order to keep their lips touching.
“You’re not gross, blondie. Not to me.”
“Tha-”
“Plus, your sneezes are frankly adorable. Nothing compared to mine.”
A melodic laugh dances out of Vash’s chest, Wolfwood finding himself enchanted by the sound. The warmth in his chest spreads to his ears as Vash giggles out-
“I remember the first time you had a cold, nearly killed us all!”
“Hey, it ain’t my fault Meryl’s so jumpy. Woman nearly crashed us into a fucking rock because I had to clear my sinuses.”
Vash laughs harder, tears starting to sprout in the corners of his eyes as he leans into Wolfwood for support. ‘I could listen to this sound forever… if this was the only thing I got to hear for the rest of my life, I would be content.’
“heH’aizshh’oo-!”
“Bless you. Not quite done, then?”
“Just a couple leftover tickles, I promise.”
His nose still has a pink flush, but Wolfwood notices the twitching has stopped, so he decides to take Vash at his word for now. ‘Though if this interaction has been anything to go on, I’d better get that spray away from Meryl before she sparks another reaction. I doubt he has the self preservation to say anything himself.’
“I’ll have a talk with Meryl about not using that spra-”
“No! Nicholas you can’t! She was so excited, and she’ll feel so bad if she finds out, I can’t do that to her over a few sneezes, really, I’ll be fine!”
“Alright, alright. Jeez blondie, don’t blow a fuse. I’ll keep your secret. For now, you should go change. You probably still have some of that spray lingering on your clothes.”
“heH’iDZshh’aa-! I hadn’t even thought of that.”
A smirk works its way over Vash’s face, eyes lit with mischief that, frankly, still sets Wolfwood’s chest on fire, no matter how many times he sees it. As Vash practically purrs out his question, Wolfwood finds himself resisting the urge to pin him to the couch to kiss him again.
“Can I borrow another one of your shirts?”
In lieu of a response, Wolfwood stands, heading towards his room, Vash in toe. As they pass Meryl’s, Wolfwood lets a plan form. ‘If Meryl just happens to misplace the spray, Vash gets to keep being the good guy, Meryl doesn’t have to feel bad, and I don’t have to watch him attempt to subdue another attack. Everybody wins.’
Glancing back at Vash’s slightly pink nose as he attempts to rub it against his shoulder while walking, unsuccessfully, Wolfwood lets a smirk flash across his features once more, dropping a step, hand grabbing Vash’s with a light squeeze.
‘If this is what my life’s been leading to, well… I guess it was worth it after all.’

There are moments that Wolfwood would swear Vash is born of the suns.
A muffled thud pulls Wolfwood from his coffee induced trance. Stumbling into the kitchen, Vash appears to have walked straight into a wall. Eyes half closed, rubbing the sleep from his eyes, the only response to this abrupt chance of pace is a yawn.
“Mornin’,” Wolfwood laughs, the greeting nearly knocking Vash off his feet. As the messy hair tilts in his direction, he notes the sweater hanging around Vash’s shoulders. “Ain’t that mine?”
It’s a rhetorical question, and they both know it. Wolfwood acquired said hoodie a few months back after some particularly intoxicated gentleman tried to purchase his jacket with it. The refusal was met with some slurred ‘k’p it an’way’ from the form stumbling out of the bar.
The sweater was much too loose on Wolfwood, the gifter having stood at least two heads taller. Still, Wolfwood was never one to toss out something of possible use, so the hoodie found itself stashed in some corner of a motel closet. It wasn’t until a chance encounter left Wolfwood staying in the same room a few years later that the sweater made its reappearance.
“Hey Nico, someone left a jacket in here!”
“Hm? Oh. Forgot about that.”
“Wait, this was yours? I didn’t know you’d been here before!”
“I’ve been ‘lot of places, blondie.”
The second he’d put it on, Vash’s entire face had lit up. The sleeves hung far past his hands, flapping at each movement. He spent the next couple hours just waving them around, convulsing with a laughter that left even Wolfwood smirking. It quickly became his nightshirt, though he’d normally be changed out of it by now.
“Makin’ a fashion statement today, are we?” Pulling his mind back to the present, Wolfwood catches up with his mouth, gesturing to the outfit.
Vash seemingly attempts a response. Instead, he only succeeds in a strangled noise that leaves them both wincing. With a light cough into his sleeve, he clears his throat and tries again. “Morning! Sorry about that.”
Raising an eyebrow, the silence echoes through the room. Wolfwood’s learned by now that commenting on the apology only leads to a never ending loop of ‘quit ‘pologizing’ followed by Vash’s instinctual apologies for apologizing.
“Want some?” Wolfwood offers instead,gesturing to the coffee leaving trails of steam drifting through the chilled morning air. The response is a chuckle, Vash shaking his head in time with his sleeves.
There’s a slight shake in his legs, accompanied by his fingers fidgeting through the holes in his sleeves. Once he picks up on this, Wolfwood’s eyes soften. Yeah, definitely not a coffee day. Vash can handle it occasionally, but if he’s feeling heightened anxiety already, caffeine tends to leave him jumpy.
It’s been a good week. Relatively calm, no angry mobs chasing him out of town. Hardly surprising he woke up anxious. Seems the universe can never cut the poor guy a break. If he has even a moment of peace, something has to come along to ruin it.
Wolfwood reaches up, lazily grabbing Vash’s hand and begins to rub soft circles against his palm. Vash gives him a soft smile in return, sinking into the chair closest to his and pouring out a serving of juice.
He’s barely taken a sip before a far off look consumes his eyes. Wolfwood squeezes his hand. Not a word spoken, but a question asked. Vash answers in the form of a hum, laying his arms on the table and resting his forehead against them.
“Gon’ suffocate like that, needle noggin,” Wolfwood says, noticing Vash’s shoulders shake lightly. Laughter? Didn’t think it was that funny. After a moment Vash emerges, mist lining his eyes. Okay it can’t have been that funny. Maybe… crying?
“Y’alright?” Despite the rough grammar, his tone is soft. Gentle in a way the blue-eyed dipshit just seems to pull out of him. Despite countless attempts to maintain just a touch of his previously rough exterior.
Vash shakes his head, which Wolfwood takes to mean no. Before he can ask any further questions, he realizes he misinterpreted the action. Vash’s eyes remain hazy, his metal arm raising to meet his face as he flinches against the back of it.
“tnsshiew-!”
“Blessin’,” Wolfwood pauses, analyzing the man sitting in front of him. There’s a pinch to Vash’s brows, his teeth beginning to show as gasps fall from his lips. The light reflecting from drops hanging off his lashes matches the metallic sheen coating his hand. “More?”
“Y- yeah…” Vash manages to choke out. One breath, two, and he ducks again, this time his voice crackling through the pitchy sounds. “in’kasshhiew-! hh’akkshihiew-!”
“Another blessin’.”
“Thanks,” Vash smiles, raising his other hand to swipe away some stray drops migrating down his cheeks. After a breath he pipes up again with a “Sorry-” before seeming to catch himself, and trailing off into a light cough. His knee brushes against Wolfwood’s as it resumes its trembling, dipping in rapid succession as the table shakes.
Wolfwood reaches down, placing his hand against Vash’s leg. Meeting his gaze, the tone used is lower. “You okay? If somethin’s the matter, you know you can tell me.”
Blushing under the scrutiny, Vash lets a sniff escape before verbalizing his response. “Yeah, sorry, I’m alright.”
“If you’re sure.”
“Yeah, definitely,” Vash nods enthusiastically, though Wolfwood clocks the way he flinches at the movement. “I’m gonna sit on the couch, put a little music on, you wanna join?”
Pressing a kiss against Vash’s temple, Wolfwood stands, heading towards the sink to rinse his mug. Not waiting for a more solid answer, Vash heads off towards the radio with a touch more speed then he should have this early.
A sweet melody begins to swirl through the air, followed by a muffled sound Wolfwood can’t quite make out. Electing to ignore it, he hums along with the rising beats, settling into the couch next to Vash. A few words slipping out as the song begins to slow again, he raises his arm so Vash can settle against his chest.
The singing soon fades away, a light instrumental taking its place. Wolfwood feels his eyes begin to shut, starting to drift off. The light in the room dulls as a few clouds cover the suns, everything bathed in a peaceful haze.
A sudden jerk snaps the room back into focus.
“What w’s that?”
“Sorry,” Vash shrugs, snuggling deeper into Wolfwood’s chest. “Arm fell asleep.”
“Oh, s’all?” Clearing the sleep from his voice, Wolfwood lets his chin rest against Vash’s hair, breathing in the floral notes. As the rise and fall of his chest leaves them both slightly rocking, Wolfwood lets his eyes shut again. Still, a nagging suspicion keeps his consciousness focused on the form in his arms.
Sure enough the shudder comes again, this time with an audible “engnkt-!”
Gazing down, Wolfwood leans back to get a clearer view of Vash’s face. “Did you just sneeze?”
Vash’s eyes are cloudy, his fingers still pinched round his nose. “S- sorry… I’b dot… dot fidished…. hH’ingkt-!”
Letting his lips meet Vash’s forehead, Wolfwood whistles. The warmth is low enough that it was easily missed earlier. Combined with the shivers bounding through the frail form huddling in his arms, the fever is obvious.
“Let ‘em out, blondie. Can’t have you blowin’ a fuse on me.”
There’s no reply, but considering the panting, it’s not for lack of desire. Wolfwood feels his heart skip a beat as Vash’s canines peek out from between his lips. It’s not unusual for his teeth to show in a smile, but Vash isn’t the type to snarl, so watching them get bared is a rare pleasure. Dropping his fingers, Vash aims for cupped hands, spinning himself towards the couch.
“hh’kNZSHhuh-! hk’PTZSHh-! ARKSHh’oo-!”
“Bless,” Wolfwood chuckles, the harshness never failing to get a jump outta him. They’ve never seemed fond of being held back, reaching a vocal quality the timid man producing them seems utterly incapable of.
“Thagks.”
“Are you sick, or is somethin’ settin’ you off?” Brushing loose strands from Vash’s forehead, the heat seems to have rapidly increased. “You feel a bit warm.”
“It’s not-” Whatever denial Vash was attempting to produce fades away as his voice breaks, leaving him descending into a rough cough. He begins to lean away, attempting to aim himself towards the floor instead. A squeak breaks free as he slides towards the edge of the couch, only being saved as Wolfwood grabs his arm.
“Vash.”
The coughs halt immediately at the name, Vash’s head swinging around to face Wolfwood. The look that he gives could melt anyone, okay? It’s not a him problem, no one could resist those puppy-dog eyes. No one.
“You sick?”
With a faint nod, Vash sniffles again. His eyes begin to swim, lip quivering with what seems to be only half irritation. He knuckles his nose, a light huff slipping out. It’s obvious it wasn’t aimed at anyone but himself.
“That’s not a crime, blondie,” Wolfwood pauses to cup Vash’s cheek, thumbing away a stray tear. “ I’m not gon’ be mad at you for gettin’ ill.”
“B- but… if I get you sick, I’ll be mad at myself.”
Wolfwood chuckles, a smirk breaking loose as the corner of Vash’s mouth twitch up. He’s never been able to hear someone else’s laughter without joining in. “I won’t let you. Jus’ means you’ll get a chance to take care of me back.”
“Back?” Vash pipes up, tilting his head in one of his many acts of pure innocence. Ironic, given all he’s capable of. Ever the walking contradiction.
“Yup. Starting right now, you’re under my care.” Wolfwood grins, starting to sit up. Vash feigns a shudder, earning himself a light slap upside the head. Still, Wolfwood doesn’t miss the way his leg is bouncing again.
“Vash.”
Those eyes turn to look at him again.
“I love you.”
Vash pales, the rose stain against his cheeks blooming up to his ears. It doesn’t matter how many times it’s said, blondie always reacts as if it’s a revelation. “I love you too, Nicholas.”
Wolfwood slides onto the floor, standing up and pulling Vash close in one graceful movement. Suddenly playful, he lets his lips brush against Vash’s ear. “That’s my shirt, ya know.”
Vash hums, leg going still. “Need to take it off me?”
Wolfwood grins, lips greedily meeting Vash’s. He sighs against the feeling, the world dissolving away as the two draw closer until even they can’t tell where one ends and another begins.
Finally Vash pulls away to direct a “knshhiew-!” into his collar.
Catching his breath, Wolfwood addresses the earlier question. “For now, you can keep it. At least until you’re better. In case you need some motivation.”
The laughter that follows pulls the air straight from Wolfwood’s lungs.
There are moments that Wolfwood would swear Vash is born of the suns.

Reminiscing On Rebuttals.
The one in which W/olfwood seems to have a cold, and V/ash dips into his memories in order to fight the urge to say something about it. Feat. A ‘not-so-surprise’ twist as to the cause of the ‘sickness’. Also featuring V/ashwood because this is absolutely a date even though neither of them can admit it.
Made ~this post~ and asked for suggestions, W/olfwood was picked to be the one suffering by @lycheeehehe and since I wholeheartedly agree, and deeply love this man, here’s the results of that suggestion! (sorry for ANOTHER tag <3)
To anyone who reads this, thank you! And I hope you enjoy it~~
(Contains references to swearing and mild violence, in case anyone doesn’t like those!)
Characters: V/ash, W/olfwood, + flashback/memories featuring M/eryl and R/oberto Word count: 3.6k
~~~~~~~ “Over here, Needle noggin.” Vash waves, giving Wolfwood a warm smile as he enters the dome. The sentiment is not returned, but he does get the signature smirk, cigarette hanging from his mouth, as usual. ‘Whoops- probably should have warned him ahead of time…’ “H- hey, you actually can’t smoke in here.” Wolfwood pauses, giving Vash a measured look, dropping and crushing it with a huff. Vash responds with a sheepish smile, before gasping, holding up a finger. “I actually have something you can have instead!” He digs frantically through his pockets, ‘Come on, where did I leave it… I know I put it somewhe- ah-hah! Got it!’ He stands tall, eyes closing as the smile takes over his cheeks, and holds out the lollipop. “You bought me candy?” “Well… yeah! I figured that you’d be unhappy with the no smoking rule, but I remember you sometimes like to suck on candies instead, so… w- was it not right..?” There’s a hesitation in Wolfwood’s posture that Vash can’t seem to read, but after a pause, he takes it. Vash lets the smile brush back over his face, turning on his heel to start giving Wolfwood a tour, before he pauses. “What was that?” Wolfwood’s stiff, and Vash notices the way his face has a bit more colour then it did a minute ago. “What was what, blondie?” “Hm… nothing, I guess. Just thought I heard something.” “We’re in a fucking bubble of plants. You probably heard some, I don’t know, plant noises.” A laugh shakes Vash’s body, even Wolfwood cracking a smile at the sound. Vash lightly grips his arm, letting the excitement flow through him again. “Can I give you a tour? There’s a lot that’s changed since the last time you’ve been here, and I wanna show you all of it! My favourite is probably the trees, they’re so huge, oh wait no, my favourite is actually th-” “knNNT’chh-!” “Oh, bless you Nicholas!” “N- not yehht- hH’GNxxt’chh-! dnGT’chh-!uhhh...” “Bless you again! Are you-” “I’m fine, focus on the tour.” It would be more convincing if he didn’t have to break away to let an itchy cough dance through his chest at the end. Vash lets his grip tighten on Wolfwood’s arm, the latter still not having pulled away. They stand like that for a moment, Vash feeling every shiver that runs down Wolfwood’s spine travel up his arm as the coughing breaks off into heady sniffles. Vash can feel the question simmering on his tongue, starting to burn his mouth. ‘Are you sick?’ But before he lets it out, his mind drags him back to travelling with Meryl and Roberto. ~~~ “Are ya sick, Wolfie?” “I t- told you… hH’ZSHHHEEW-! God almighty- I told you not to call me that.” Roberto raises an eyebrow, feigning innocence. ‘It doesn’t suit him’ Vash allows himself to think, throwing a blessing at Wolfwood before glancing back over at Meryl, who has pressed herself as far away from the coughing man as she can manage in such a small car. “You didn’t answer the question.” “I’m not sick. hEH’KESHHH’AA!” “Bless you!” “Real convincing.” “Wel- eh’kNTSSHHH’AA-! Fucking- hAH’IHHZZSHHEEW-! If you weren’t plannin’ on listening to my answer, why ask the damn question at all?” “Bless you!” Vash can’t help but chuckle, blushing slightly at the dirty look Roberto shoots him for the laughter. “I- I mean, he’s got a point, what his answer was gonna be was k- kinda obvious.” “See? Even spiky hair gets it.” “Vash isn’t exactly the blueprint for how to be honest ‘bout your health.” “I guess you’re right there, but that don’t mean I’m sick just because blondie agreed with me. His lack of self care ain’t relevant. heHhh-! Christ, not agai- eH’AAIYESHH’AA-!” “B- bless you…” The pint tint deepens as Vash sinks into his seat, shooting Roberto a sheepish grin, met with a shrug, before glancing back at Wolfwood. He manages to catch the hiss that scrapes through the tired man’s throat as he brings his fingers up to pinch the bridge of his defined nose. “Headache?” He’s careful to keep his voice down, Meryl and Roberto having started a conversation ‘More like argument’ about her driving style. Wolfwood gives a slight grimace in his direction, letting his eyes flutter shut as he roughly attempts to crush all of his nose in his wrist, unsuccessfully, as the tickle takes over again. “hAH’AIISHHH’AA-!” Meryl jumps once more, though Vash can’t tell if it’s from the noise or the fear of germs. Either way Wolfwood doesn’t miss it, neither does Vash miss the pale red starting to spread across his ears. In an effort to remedy the situation, Vash pulls out a pile of crumpled napkins, handing them over with a silent smile in lieu of a blessing. Wolfwood gives him a slight nod of thanks before burying his nose in a few rapidly pressed against his face. “hH’MMFFFSHHH’UHH-!” “Bless you.” It’s barely a whisper, but Vash knows it was heard. He lets his hand wander up from the seat to rest against Wolfwood’s shoulder, wincing at the tension that meets him. Wolfwood meets his eyes, a flicker of something burning in them that Vash can’t help but yearn for. “Sleep.” Wolfwood nods, letting his head fall to the side, the side that Vash’s hand just so happens to be placed on. Vash lets out a warm smile, eyes jumping to the front to make sure they’re not being observed. After confirming they’re not, he runs his hand against the tired man’s cheek, his blush spreading deeper at the slight congested sigh he’s met with, shortly replaced with stuffy snores. ~~~ “You’re not gonna faint on me, are ya?” Vash feels the world rush back into focus, Wolfwood’s expression teasing, but with a hint of genuine concern drifting in his eyes. ‘Oh, I totally just spaced out… how long was I not paying attention? It’s not like I can tell him what I was thinking about… come on Vash, think on your feet, you’re supposed to be good at this!’ “N- no of course not! Sorry I was uh… just thinking about p- plants…” Wolfwood raises an eyebrow at this and Vash mentally smacks himself. Thankfully, Wolfwood doesn’t fight it any further, most likely too focused on directing another wet sniffle at his shoulder, followed by an entirely too itchy throat clearing. “Alright then. eH’GNT’chh-! You gonna start showing me the plants instead of jus’ thinkin’ about them?” “Bless you! Right, of course, let’s go left first, that’s where the trees are, work our way back over to the far right, that’s where my favourite ones are!” “Lead the way, blondie.” A squeak escapes Vash’s mouth as he beams at Wolfwood, grabbing his arm again and dragging him off towards the trees. He can’t help but try to speed a bit through the explanations as Wolfwood’s sniffling seems to increase to a near constant level. Light, yet itchy sounding coughs keep spinning him away from Vash. ‘And then there’s the sneezing that he seems determined to stifle til it kills him, stubborn idiot.’ “hH’dnXGT-! haHHhh-! iH’ASH’nxxGT’choo-!” “Bless you…” Wolfwood responds with a deep sniff, letting his nose rub against his wrist with an urgency that seems almost too personal to watch. Vash turns away to give him a bit of space, feeling his chest clench at the way the last one nearly broke through. “R- ready to continue?” “Go ‘head, keep talking about your trees.” “Actually we’re onto the bushes now! I know, it seems a bit like trees but smaller, but there’s actually a load of differences. So firstly-” Vash lets himself start rambling out facts about bushes as easily as breathing. He’s spent days on end studying each plant in the dome, listening to people talk about them, reading about them anywhere he can find information. ‘There’s just something so soothing about them… a simplicity that humans don’t seem to share. It’s one of the things I love most about humanity, and yet… also something I adore about the plants.’ A slight hum pulls Vash out of his monologue, letting his eyes rest comfortably on Wolfwood’s gruff form. His hand is permanently pressed to his nose, a slight cough escaping on every second sentence, colour starting to spread through his cheeks. Despite all this, Vash can tell he’s listening to every fact, soaking in all the beauty of nature. And maybe, soaking in the beauty of something else too. “You said these things flower, and then grow berries from those flowers?” “Yeah! Which is really fascinating because the flowers themselves aren’t particularly tasty, or edible for that matter, but the berries are delicious!” “If you say so. hEH’enGNXT-! dtKNgxxt’-!” “Bless you. It’s actually surprising how many plants are edible, and which ones taste good! See, some look good, but don’t tast-” “hA’DANGTT-! S- shit… huHhh-! Guhh… ihhh… hiHH’AIIESHHH’AA-!” “Oh, bless you again!” “Don’t waste your breath, needle noggin. You were saying something about tasting good?” Vash tries to recall the point he was making, but his attention is preoccupied watching Wolfwood attempt to rub his nose clean off his face. He lets out another light cough, stumbling a bit with the effort taken to contain the sneezes that follow right on its heels. ‘Seems they’re not satisfied being crushed into oblivion anymore.’ Vash fights the instinct to offer a blessing, instead offering a distraction from the miserable sniffling. “EHHNGXT’choo-! hehh’SHHkngtt’choo-!” “Can’t remember what I was saying before, but that’s okay, you’ve probably had enough bush facts… Let’s move to the flowers instead, some of my favourites are over there! They just have such beautiful colours, it’s almost like a sunrise but in a physical form, plus-” Grabbing Wolfwood’s arm yet again, Vash practically skips over to the flowers, his excitement only dulled by the way Wolfwood flinches away from Vash into his shoulder to stifle another set. “iH’hNGtt-! eh’KngXT-!” “Bless you.” “Thanks, blondie… excuse me.” Standing in front of the flowers, gesturing to a field of poppies, Vash finds himself studying Wolfwood, trying to catalogue symptoms. ‘He doesn’t seem feverish, but there’s the sneezing, sniffling, he’s got a cough, and his voice seems to be getting hoarse. Though, I can’t tell if that’s from the stifling or a sore throat. And then he excused himself instead of brushing it off or making a joke… he’s gotta be feeling worse than he’s letting on… I should really say something… but…’ ~~~ “INKGT’shoo-!” “Bless you. You should really stop that, you’re gonna implode.” “Thanks for the concern shortie, but it’s misplaced. You should be more worried about the fucking mob waiting to skin us alive outside the door. Thanks for that, stampede.” Vash blushes, Roberto and Wolfwood shooting matching glares in his direction while Meryl offers a sympathetic smile. “I tried to warn you! I said they weren’t exactly fans of mine here…” Meryl suddenly joins in on the glares, Vash feeling his face run pale, a sheepish smile forming as she waves her hands around with an irritated retort. “That’s not the same thing as ‘oh hey guys, heads up, the whole town will actively try to hunt me down and kill me’.” “hH’AIIYYZZSHHEWW-! RRSHHH’AA-!” Roberto rolls his eyes as Vash and Meryl offer simultaneous blessings, Wolfwood brushing them off with a rough sigh, turning his attention back to the crack between the boards of the window they’re crouched around. “It looks to be about ten, maybe fifteen at most. I could take maybe six on a good day.” “Is this a good day, undertaker?” “heHhH-! hEPT’TNGGK’choo-! Christ- iHH’ZZSHHHEEW-!” Meryl and Vash echo the previous blessing, prompting a new round of eyerolls from Roberto, Wolfwood joining in this time, before Roberto casts his eyes back on the sickly man. “Gonna take that as a no.” “I’m fine. Now are we gonna do this or what, blondie?” “Y- yeah… I mean… or we could try to find a back way, run away before they can get in…?” “An- AYYZZSCHHH’OO-! And why exactly would we do that?” A nervous smile works its way across Vash’s face as he goes to answer, Meryl shooting him a pointed look he chooses to ignore. ‘Someone’s gotta say something… he’s gonna get himself killed if he tries to go out there in this state.’ “Bless you… and well… you seem a… a bit… sick- hey, ouch!” Vash yelps as Wolfwood’s hand meets the back of his head with a rough swat. Roberto lets out a light chuckle which Meryl glares at him for, giving Vash a soft smile as he rights himself. Wolfwood, however, is glowering at him. “I am not sick. I don’t get sick. heHhh…! Oh for fucks- hEH’KNNZSSHHHEW-!” “Deny as much as you’d like, Wolfie-” “Don’t call me that.” “-the fact remains, you’re in no state to take on this many people. Stampede is right, for once, we should try to find a back way out and sneak away.” “Fine, I ain’t gonna fight you. Rather save my energy for kicking this one’s ass for getting us into this mess.” Another blush spreads across Vash’s ears, dipping down into his cheeks as he rubs the back of his neck with his hand. Wolfwood smirks a little at the display, before dipping back into his chest with another harsh outburst. “knNGT’ZSHHH’oo-! IHHZZYYSHHHEW-!” “Bless you.” There’s silence in response, but as Meryl and Roberto head downstairs to start scoping out possible exits, Wolfwood lets his head rest against Vash’s shoulder, sniffling deepling as the position loosens the congestion. Vash lets a soft smile form, running his fingers through Wolfwood’s hair, giggling at the sigh it releases. “I’ve got you, Nicholas.” “I know, blondie.” ~~~ The scene finishes playing in Vash’s mind. As he regains conscious-thought he finds, much to his alarm, that he’s been talking the whole time. ‘So final verdict, mentioning the illness leads to physical retaliation, but if I just keep up what I’m doing he’ll seek comfort on his own terms. I can do that. Side point, it seems I can just rattle off facts about flowers without even being consciously aware of it…’ “-and that’s why I enjoy lavender. Do I talk in my sleep?” Wolfwood who’s been nodding along, offering light hums or growls between the outpouring of his symptoms suddenly stops, raising an eyebrow as he casts a smirk towards Vash. “Where did that come from?” “I just- uhh… was wondering..?” “hEH’INNGT’shoo-! Well-” “Bless you.” “-not much that I’ve heard, just a few words here and there.” “What?! And no one ever thought to tell me?” Vash gets a shrug in response, but a mischief dances through Wolfwood’s watery eyes, smirk deepening against his cheeks. ‘He’s obviously feeling well enough to make fun of me still, though given his mindset of denial, that just means he isn’t on death's door yet.’ “I guess it must’ve slipped my mind. hH’ESHNXXT’shoo-! Damn it.” “Bless you. D- do you maybe have a…” Wolfwood throws a dirty glare his way, eyes daring Vash to finish the sentence. In response, Vash feels his cheeks warm, ears starting to faintly burn. It’s quickly replaced by a pang of concern as the latest sneeze has left Wolfwood slightly trembling as he attempts to catch his breath. ‘I need a new plan, something to get him sitting down so he can rest, without being too obvious. I could say that I need to rest, but he wouldn’t buy that… Oh I got it!’ “Do you wanna come see my favourite flowers? They’re called sunflowers, they’re so tall and bright yellow with a black center, it’s just stunning, wanna see..?” “That’s what I’m here for, ain’t it?” The response sounds cold, but there’s a playful tone in Wolfwood’s voice that sends chills down Vash’s spine. His hand trembles at the thought of grabbing him again, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t keep pulling on him… I don’t know if he wants-’ but before he can spiral too far, Wolfwood lets his own hand grip Vash’s. Neither of them says a word, matching colours blooming over their cheeks as Vash leads him towards the flowers. “There’s a bench in the middle of the field, it’s practically surrounded by them, can we sit on it..? I really like how close you feel to them on it.” “hept’IZNNGT’choo-! Scuse me. If you insist, blondie. Your tour after all.” Despite the way he rolls his eyes, Vash can hear the sigh Wolfwood releases as he sits, elbows resting on his knees as he lets his head fall into his hands. Vash starts to ramble on about the sunflowers, but is cut off before he even finishes the first sentence. “I love how tall they are, they even reach up to our hea-” “hAH’AIIIYYSHH’OO-! KZZSHHH’AA-! hiHhH’IZZSHHH’AA-!” “Bless yo-” “KNG-ZZSHH’AA-! I can’t… hUH’EEYSHHHEWW-! AIIEESHHHEW-! RRSHHHH’AA-! I can’t stop… heHhH-! ahh…. iHH’KNGTT-DTGXT-huH’IZZSSHHH’OO-!” “Are you okay-?” Vash’s panicked tone comes with a frantic attempt to figure out why Wolfwood’s suddenly so much worse. He lets his worried gaze run across Wolfwood’s convulsing form, a stabbing pain in his heart as the sneezing man attempts to give him a wide eyed look. He only succeeds in prying open his eyes for a second before the onslaught crushes them shut once more. “hEH’KETSCHHH’AA-! eh’kNTSHhhew-! What the fuck is happening- haAhHH-! aiiyESHH-keschhh-rRRESHH’AA-!” “Come on Nico, just try to breathe. Bless you- I don’t understand why it got so much worse?!” “I- eh’EASCHHH’oo-! hH’RRSHHH’AA-! KESSHH’AA-! Every breath- ma- makesitworse- hEH’INGGTT’choo-!” “Bless you… Every brea- shit Nicholas- stand up, right now, here, grab my arm, just stand up! Why didn’t you say something?” Wolfwood does as he’s told, and Vash grimaces at the state of his nose as he leaves the safety of his arm to shoot Vash a confused look before ducking back in, smothering another desperate fit. “MMFFSHH’AA-! hEH’INNGT-RRSHHH’AA-! eH’MMFFSHH’OO-!” Vash pulls Wolfwood along at a pace that leaves both of them panting for air as they reach the doors of the dome. He practically throws Wolfwood through them, the panting man slumping down the wall until he’s sitting on the floor, Vash taking a seat next to him. “Christ Nico, why would you enter the dome if this was gonna happen? Bless you again…” The sudden realization that seems to dawn on Wolfwood’s face between desperate hitching nearly gets a laugh out of Vash. Without a word, Wolfwood ducks back into his shoulder, aiming away from Vash but entirely giving up on catching them. Vash takes a deep breath to calm himself, noticing how they’re already sounding slightly softer. “uhH’ZZSHHHEWW-! yyyiESSHH’aa-! hh’AIISHhh’oo-!” “Here, bless you by the way, take these, they’re not much, but it should help.” Wolfwood greedily accepts the napkins, attempting to crush his defined nose into the stack as another set pushes its way out of his battered sinuses. “heHh’knNGSHH’oo-! iZZSHHHEEW-! Fuckin- hAH’AIISHH’aa-!” “Bless you. Jeez, I thought you were just sick? Why didn’t you tell me?” “I als- heH’ESHHEEWW-! Also thought I w- hH’RRUSHH’AA-! was just si... sick- hAH’keTCHshh’oo-!” Another itchy cough leaves both wincing as Wolfwood attempts to suck air back into his lungs between spasms. Vash runs through the events in his head, too distracted to offer a blessing. ‘I should have noticed… when he’s sick it usually starts in his throat, he should have been hoarse before the sneezing started… I was just so distracted by the plants…’ “It’s my fault, I’m sorry. I should have noticed, or said something, I just…” Wolfwood lets out a rough laugh as the coughing fades out, sending the burning feeling back to Vash’s gut. Chills run down his spine as he realizes one of Wolfwood’s hands is still clinging to his. Wolfwood sniffles deep and wet before he responds. “Not your fault. I’m not the easiest person, am I, blondie?” “Heh… not exactly…” “Seems I’m not the easiest allergic person ei- heH’IZZSHH’AA-! either.” “Bless you… Again- I’m really sorry Nicholas, I shoul-” A light squeeze to his hand shuts Vash’s mouth mid word. His eyes trace up to Wolfwoods, shivering at the warmth that’s waiting for him. “Not your fault. I’ve had this sort of reaction to things before. Turns out I’m a pretty allergy prone guy I guess. Christ- eH’KETSHHEEW-! aiiYESHH’aa-! Might be one of the reasons I enjoy trudging the desert so much. Don’t normally run into much besides sand.” “Bless you. You have allergies?” “Yeah, and what of it? They’re actually a sign your immune system works too well. Plus I guess I needed something to combat the fact I basically never get sick. Wouldn’t be fair to all you folk if I just got to be immune to everything.” Vash allows the laugh bubbling up in his chest to reveal itself, mind flashing back to all the many, many times he’d seen Wolfwood sick. ‘Denial to the very end. Predictable as always, Nicholas.’ Wolfwood’s smile brightens at the sound, dark eyes feeling nothing but warm as Vash soaks them in. “hEh’aiiYEshh’oo-!” “You’re starting to sound a bit better, bless you. I guess not being in the dome helps. And it probably helps to not be sitting at nose-level with all that polle-” “hEH’RRUSHHH’AA-! IZZSHHHEEEW-! Oh god blondie, don’t even say the word.” “Bless you! Sorry! Why don’t we go see if home has some medication somewhere.” Wolfwood coughs again, lighter but still itchy, and lets out another deep sniff. “Sounds like a plan. hept’ktSHHAA-!” “Bless you, Nicholas.” “Thank you, Vash.” Shivers run down his spine at the use of his name. ‘People call me that all the time but… somehow it feels so… personal… when he does it.’ A bright smile slips across his face, Wolfwood echoing it with one of his own, whispering something under his breath that Vash just catches, before standing and starting to head toward home. “I’ve always loved your real smile.”
Smoke In The Breeze, You In My Lungs.
The one where V/ash gives W/olfwood a gift, and W/olfwood gives V/ash a show. Feat. sneezy W/olfwood, and smitten V/ash. (Shipped, though not entirely ‘dating’, just more like ‘will be dating.’ Pre-dating. Also known as head over heels for each other, secretly). Also there’s totally a few not so secret moments about it~
First time attempting T/rigun S/tampede, so the characters voices are still new to me, hopefully this will be an acceptable addition to the AMAZING collection of V/ashwood fics already on here! For anyone bothering to read this, thank you~ Hope you enjoy~~
(References to smoking and swearing, incase you don’t like those)
Characters: V/ash, W/olfwood, and a surprisingly cool desert night. Word Count: 3.5k ~~~~~~~
The first time Vash remembered seeing Wolfwood smoke was almost immediately after meeting him. Since then, he seemed to always be either stuffing a cigarette between his teeth, crushing one on the ground, or somewhere in between. Despite this, cigarettes remain just as expensive as always, and Wolfwood remains the same short on cash grifter. Turns out addiction doesn’t pay for itself. That’s why when Vash saw the pack of cigarettes sitting on the counter of a bar they had passed through on their last round of plant repairs, he had asked the man they were attached to where he’d found them. Turns out, there was a peddler in this town that sold rare and exotic types. Vash had gotten his money together and managed to afford a single pack. Tonight was the first time since then that the opportunity had presented itself to offer the gift without too much explanation needed as to its meanings. “Hey, Nicho-” Vash starts, a light shove in response nearly sending him over the edge of the rock they find themselves balanced on. “Watch it Blondie, I told you, unless we’re alone, it’s Wolfwood.” Vash lets their eyes meet, before gesturing to the desert around them, barren aside from the car they’d ‘borrowed’ for this little trip. “Oh, yes, of course, I must have forgotten about the invisible forces watching us from- ouch! Okay, okay, sorry.” The laughter in his voice doesn’t go unnoticed, a sharp smile in response forming on Wolfwood’s face. His smiles always had this edge to them, as if simply a touch from his lips would be enough to slice you open. Staring at him in the moonlight, Vash nearly thought about testing the theory. “Hey, blondie?” “Hmm?” “I assumed you had an end to that sentence you started before? Unless it was just a veiled attempt at getting yourself sent careening off a real high rock for the fun of it?” “Right, sorry. Yeah, I just… here.” Vash reached into his pocket, pulling out the pack of cigarettes and sticking them in Wolfwood’s hands, not missing the baffled look that slipped across the normally fixed features. “As payment, for that bread you spotted me the other day.” “You mean… the piece of bread that we got as payment for the job…?” Vash feels his hand graze the back of his neck before he even registers that he’s moved it. “W-well… I mean I guess… just consider it a gift then!” Wolfwood looks like he’s planning to say more, but once his eyes have finished tracing Vash’s face, he’s decided against it. Settling instead for flashing him a smirk, and pulling out the first one. Sticking it between his teeth, Wolfwood leans towards him. “Light me up, blondie.” A blush spreads like wildfire against Vash’s cheeks, and he pulls out the lighter Wolfwood had tossed him a few towns back, bringing it carefully to the cigarette. The glow of the flame lights up the mischief in Wolfwood’s eyes as he inhales, then gently blows the smoke right at Vash’s face. “Hey-!” Coughing, Vash waves his hand in the air, giving Wolfwood a playful punch in return, laughing a bit at the grimace he receives. “Bit rough there, Blondie. Hm.. these taste a bit different than normal, are they the regular packs I get?” “You’re the one who blew smoke in my face! You’re lucky I’m wearing my sunglasses, or that would have gone right in my eyes! And um… I think they’re a different brand maybe?” Wolfwood hums lightly, choosing to focus his attention on the first part of what Vash said. “Why are you wearing them at night? Are even the moons too bright for you?” “Wha- no! I just got so used to the feeling of them on my face that…” Vash rubs his neck, offering a sheepish smile, “It starts to feel weird without them. Not quite like being naked, more like walking around without a shirt on. Technically acceptable, but still quite weird. Feels vulnerable almost. Though sometimes if I- hey, you alright?” Wolfwood’s eyes have been captured by a far off look, his head slightly tilting back until- “hIH’ktsSHH’yue-! hAH’ZSHH’oo-!” “Oh, bless you!” With a rough sniff, Wolfwood brings his wrist back down from where it had assumed position under his nose. He gives Vash a sharp grin, taking another drag from the cigarette in lieu of a thank you. “What were you on about then?” “Hm? Oh, it was nothing really. Honestly I don’t even remember where I was going with that.” “Alright.” And with that, they’re back to staring out at the desert sky. Not a cloud in sight, but somehow, it was darker than usual. ‘That wouldn’t normally be a bad thing, but… it makes it harder to see him’ Vash thinks, allowing his eyes to trace over to Wolfwood. The light of the cigarette glows faintly against the darkness of his clothes. His eyes though… they shine without any light at all. Somehow, despite being dark, Vash has always noticed the glow they seem to give off. “Hehh- hH’kttZSHH’yuee-!” “Ble-” “Nohhht- not done Blondieehhhh-! hEH’ZZSCHH’OO-! hahh’ASHH’yuee-!” “Triple bless you!” “Cute, needle-noggin.” Vash smiles, the laughter dancing in Wolfwood’s eyes filling him with warmth, despite the cold air. “You alright though? Something setting you off?” Wolfwood gives a deep sniff before answering, apparently trying to see if he can smell anything unusual. Unfortunately, he’s already way too stuffed up to let anything pass, including air. “Can’t tell. Doubt it though, likely just something irritating my allergies.” “In the middle of a desert…?” “You’d be surprised at the kind of flowering plants you can still find ‘round here. One time I walked into a town that had a full blooming cactus- flower- thing. Still don’t know exactly what it was, but damn it was potent. Was sneezing nearly the whole night, but it was too late to go find another place to stay.” Wolfwood seems to shudder a little at the memory, his hand coming up to rub at his nose as if even the thought of it was starting to irritate him. “Pretty sure I woke everyone in that motel, got some real dirty looks the next morning.” Vash laughs, dodging a punch thrown at his good arm. Wolfwood gives him a glare, but there’s no fire in his eyes. Only warmth. The cigarette he’s been smoking has reached its last legs, and Wolfwood crushes it, before pulling out another, leaning in once again for Vash to light it. “Might as well treat myself to a few tonight, it’s a gift after all, right Blondie?” Vash obliges, lighting it up and letting his head tilt with a nod, partially to agree, mostly to hide the flush starting to fill his cheeks at the mention of the gift. Thankfully, he’s soon distracted, as Wolfwood lets out another itchy gasp, this time barely managing to turn away from Vash before the sneezes break free. “hihh’ZZSH’yuee-! heHH- hAH’ktSHHH’ooo-! hh’RRUSHH’ueee-! Fuck- hah’ASHH’ooo-! Hehh… ihhh’hEH’ZSHH’OOO-!” “Jeez, Nico. Bless you, are you alright?” A shiver runs through Wolfwood, his cheeks slightly pink as he turns back to face Vash. “‘Scuse me. I’m alright. Just somethin’ tick-hhH’ZSHHH’OO-! Oh god, not doohhhne!” Vash wants to turn away, give him some privacy, but something about the vulnerability of the display has him captivated. Wolfwood’s eyes are fighting to stay open, fluttering against the depth of the tickle. His mouth hangs open, breath hitching wildly as his nose practically trembles. “hHH’KSHH’yuee-! Huhhh- hEH’RSHHH-ISHHH-ZSCHHH’ooo-! Wheww~ Ohgod- iHh’NGXttt’shiew-!” Desperate to stop the onslaught, he attempts to stifle the last one, Vash not missing the shivers it sends down his spine. Both of them know what a stupid choice that was, as Wolfwood can do nothing but gasp against the cold air, before ducking into his arm with another rapid, yet softer, fit. “hhH’ishh’iew-! tiSHH’iew-! hehh’ASHH’iew-! Hehh- hH’DTshhh’iew-!” “Bless you. You really shouldn’t hold them in like that, you know it just makes you sneeze more afterwards.” A blush spreads across Wolfwood’s face, Vash not missing the way the dark eyes refuse to meet his own. “Yeah, yeah. Thank you Dr. Blondie, I’ll keep that in mind.” The tone is light and teasing, but there’s a deeper mood to it that Vash can’t quite put his finger on. This isn’t new to him, Wolfwood quite often uses humour or charm to mask deeper, actual emotions. Deciding to let him keep what dignity he has left after the fits, Vash just offers a sweet smile, and a tissue from his pocket. Wolfwood greedily reaches for it before pausing, and gently handing Vash the cigarette to hold before grabbing the tissue. Offering a ‘thanks’ over his shoulder as he turns away, he roughly blows his nose, Vash wincing at the congested sounds. Turning back with his mouth still slightly hanging open, ‘likely to breathe’ Wolfwood gives Vash a tight smile, before taking the cigarette back. “Are you sure you don’t know what’s causing this? You’re not getting sick, are you? You could tell me if you were, ya know. It’s not a bad thing to admit-” “I’m not sick. Just itchy.” “And stuffed up.” There’s a pause, Wolfwood seemingly taking stock of his symptoms. Vash attempts to do the same. “Yeah. Still, it feels like allergies. If I was getting sick I’d be feeling it in my throat by now.” “Hm… normally you’d be coughing by now too.” Wolfwood shoots him a look, and Vash blushes a bit, rushing through an explanation before he can stop himself. “We just spend a lot of time together, and I noticed that usually when you get sick you get a cough pretty quickly- not first though, first comes a sore throat- usually I can tell because you don’t talk as much- not that you talk too much! You just talk more than I do sometimes, and well, when you’re sick you don’t, and that’s how I can tell it’s starting- but yeah usually the coughing starts before the sne-” “Blondie, take a breath.” Vash chuckles nervously, aiming his gaze at the ground where the crushed cigarette lays, still slightly smouldering, so he grinds it a bit further into the rock. “hH’ZSCHH’ooo-! hehh’ktCHH’iew-! haHH’DNNGT’shhh-!” “Didn’t we just go over th-” “hIH’ISHH’iew-! Tishh’iew-! hH’ZSHH’iew-! heH’ashh’iew-! HH’zshh’IEW-!” “-this. Bless you.” His tone is teasing, and Wolfwood shoots him an exasperated look, rolling his eyes dramatically, though Vash can’t quite tell if that was meant for him, or the sneezes that seemed to still be dancing through his sinuses. “Hehhh- hH’HDT- guhhh…” “Still need to sneeze?” “Whaahhhht do you hehhh…. hH’IHH-uhhhhh what do you think?” Vash blushes, the desperation in Wolfwood’s words simmering in his stomach in ways he’d rather not dwell on. Instead, he reaches over and runs a single finger down the bridge of Wolfwood’s pronounced nose, smirking at the way his eyes tear up immediately. He manages to keep enough wits about him to aim away from Vash’s hand, but doesn’t even attempt to cover as the sneezes blast out of him. “HH’ZSCHHH’OO-! hah’ASHH’ooo-! RRUSHHH’UEE-! HAHH’ZSHHH’YUEE-! Hehh… hehH’KTSHH’ooo-! hh’zzUSHH’ooo-! Jeez, ‘scuse me. Thanks for that, Blondie. They were really tormenting me there.” “Bless you. Seemed like you needed a little help, is all.” “Yeah. Damn, still itches something fierce. Really don’t know what’s got me so irritated.” Vash glances around the desert once more. Nothing catches his eye, the vast open space still empty of anything more than sand and their car. “We seem to be the only things around. Unless you’ve suddenly developed an allergy to sand. Oh god, that would be- “hEH’KISHH’ooo-!” “Exactly! Took the words right out of my mo- ouch! Okay, okay, jeez. No need to beat me up! I’m not the one causing this.” They pause for a minute, Wolfwood’s eyes watery and glossed over, but Vash’s suddenly wide and frantic. “Wait, you don’t think you’re allergic to me, do you?! I mean, I’m the only thing around, and you’re having an allergy attack, so it figures that you have to be allergic to something nearby, and since I’m the only thin-” “Blondie, you’re giving me a headache.” “Sorry…” “Don’t worry so much. I’m not allergic to you. I’d be long dead by now if I was, what with how much you cling to my side.” “I’m pretty sure you’re the one who just decided to invite yourself along on everything I do.” “Regardless of the details, my point stands. I can’t possibly be allergic to you. Besides, it only started recen- hehH- hold on-” Wolfwood pauses, voice entirely air. His breath catches, then releases once more, stuck right on the edge of sneezing and hitching. Vash feels a pang of sympathy at the desperate look in his eyes as they flutter between closed and open. Wolfwood is stuck, mouth ajar, head slightly tilted. One hand is hovering in front of his face, lightly fanning, the other holding his cigarette as it burns closer and closer to his fingers. Noticing the pain that’s sure to occur soon, Vash knocks it down, crushing it beneath his boot, not missing the growl of protest Wolfwood manages to slip out between gasps. “You’re a bit too preoccupied to be smoking that right now, and I don’t think either of us want you getting burned by it.” All he gets are hitches in return, the groaning starting to air on the side of moans as Wolfwood tries frantically to get the sneezes to come out. Finally he reaches over, grabbing Vash’s hand, sending chills down his spine. He’s too far gone to speak, but he doesn’t need words. Vash knows what to do. Gently taking his finger, and running it down the bridge of his nose like he did before, Vash nearly faints at the deep and airy moan that escapes Wolfwood’s throat, before he lunges forward with a harsh fit, lightly misting Vash’s hand as he attempts to move out of the way. “hEH’ISHH’YIUU-! ASHHH’YUUE-! ZSSHHH-DTSHH-KTSHHH’OOO-! hehh- heH’kNXGT’SHOO-! heH’ISHH’iew-! hh’zzSHH’ooo-! What the fuck- RSHHH’ooo-! hh’ktSHH’ooo-! heH’RSHHHH’yuue-! Oh thank god.” “Bless you Nicholas. Better?” He receives a desperate sniff in response, wet and heady, and Vash searches through his pockets for another tissue, handing over a pack he forgot he was carrying. “You been holdin’ out on me.” Wolfwood mutters, crushing his nose into them and letting out a harsh blow. “Forgot I had them, sorry ‘bout that, I woulda handed ‘em over sooner if I remembered.” Wolfwood comes up for air, his nose twitching in the cold night air, before pressing it back into the tissues for another blow. Finally, seeming to get enough relief to satisfy him, his watery glance meets Vash’s, an itchy sigh releasing from his chest. “All is forgiven, feels much better now. Except that you crushed my smoke before I was finished with it!” “Ah, sorry ‘bout that too, but it was for the best.” Already pulling another out, Wolfwood gives him another sharp smile, this time laced with something that makes Vash’s heart flutter before he has a chance to stop it. “At this rate I’m gonna finish the pack before morning.” As he reaches over to get it lit, Vash gently pulls it out from between his lips. Wolfwood raises an eyebrow, but doesn’t say a word, and doesn’t move back either, their faces close enough to feel the other’s breath. Vash places the smoke in his mouth, lights it, and takes a drag, ‘Hm, it does taste a bit different… what is this, I wonder.’ before letting Wolfwood remove it, and place it between his own lips. Neither moves, Wolfwood breathing in too, Vash still holding his breath, though not by choice anymore. They stay like this for a beat, before Wolfwood turns to the side, blowing out, before turning back, eyes aglow. Vash finally realizes he’s still holding the smoke in his lungs, and goes to exhale, before pausing. ‘Time for a little revenge for the earlier smoke blowing’. He lets his breath go, smoke drifting right into Wolfwood’s face. The reaction is instantaneous, Wolfwood using every fiber of his being to aim for Vash’s shoulder instead of his face as the sneezes burst out of him, forcing the cigarette to drop onto the ground where Vash crushes it. “hhH’zzSHH’ooo-! hh’ASHHH’ooo-! heH’ihhDSHH’ieew-! hUH’RUSHHH’yuee-! B- Blond- hAH’KTSHHH’ooo-! hihh’ZZCHH’OOO-! hH’EDDshh’yue-! RSHHH’ooo-!” “Oh god, bless you Nico!” Vash pauses for a second, before realization sets across his face, immediately replaced by panic as he turns over the pack in his hand, reading the label. “Shit- Nicholas, oh damn it-” Through congested sniffles, Wolfwood manages to shoot him a questioning gaze, before another desperate sneezes rips through him, this time giving him enough time to aim for the ground. “hEHH’KTSHH’shiew-!” “Bless you. I’m so sorry!” “What are you sorry for, I’m the one who just… juuhhhst… hhh’ISHH’yue-! ktSHH’ooo-! Scuse me- just sneezed against your shoulder.” “Bless yo- huh? Oh, that’s nothing, don’t worry about it. It’s my fault anyways, I really should have seen it sooner, I was just… kinda distracted… I’m so sorry!” “Seen what…? What am I missing here Blondie?” Vash blushes, this time deep enough that Wolfwood can’t help but raise an eyebrow at the colour shift. “T- the… the pack of smokes I gave you… you said they tasted different, and I thought it was just the brand, but when I had one I couldn’t quite put my finger on what it was- it tasted like more than just a different brand- I mean I should have smelled it in the smoke but I wasn’t paying attention- and you were too stuffed up to smell or taste it anymore- I’d heard of flavoured cigarettes before but I’ve never seen them around here so I didn’t even think to-” “Blondie, rambling again. Is there a point you’re gettin’ to?” “.....They’re cinnamon flavoured. Which means the smoke is cinnamon scented too.” Wolfwood stares for a moment, before letting out a laugh that nearly startles Vash off the rock. “That’s all? Blondie, with the way you were goin’ on, I thought they were poisoned or something!” “B- but… you’re allergic to cinnamon..? That’s why you’re sneezing so much, and… and it’s all my fault…” Vash feels his face flushing again, tears starting to form in his eyes before he can fight them off. ‘Why are you crying, you’re the one who caused this, you don’t get to cry-’. His thoughts are cut off by the feeling of soft hands against his cheeks. One hand wipes away the tears, lingering just a moment on his cheek, while the other runs up into his hair, eliciting a soft sigh that he can’t stop. “I’m not angry at you, Vash.” Vash manages to clear his head enough to recognize the hands belong to Nicholas. The voice that spoke up belongs to him too, and there’s a gentle tone in it he’s never heard before. The eyes staring back at him belong to the man as well, and the kindness seeping through them nearly starts Vash crying again. “Y… you’re not…?” A light chuckle breaks through, and Vash feels his heart drowning in longing. “It’s just some sneezing, Blondie. We both know I’ve had worse. Plus, I was still enjoying the smoke, even with the unfortunate byproduct.” Vash stares, head filling with thoughts he can’t ignore. ‘Why isn’t he angry?’ ‘He was still enjoying them?’ ‘Is he okay with this?’ and front and center, ‘His hands are still touching me, does he know that?’ One hand still cups his face, thumb running along his chin, while the other seems content to pet through his hair. Vash can’t help but gasp as Nicholas suddenly pulls back, both hands leaving his skin, prompting his own to reach out for them. “hihh’KTshhh’iew-!” ‘Oh.’ With that, Nicholas lets Vash’s hands grab his own, returning the grasp. Neither of them pulls closer, but neither pulls away. They just sit there for a minute letting the contact send burning chills through their bodies, almost as if they were being electrocuted. And yet… it was the most soothing feeling either had ever had. After a few minutes of this, Vash broke off first, barely catching the airy sigh that escaped between Nicholas’s teeth. Vash could see his nose was still twitching, a red sheen on it glowing in the moonlight. ‘When did it get so much brighter out here?’ “We should get you some allergy meds, or you’re gonna be sneezing the rest of the night. Neither of us will get any sleep if that happens.” “Right, Blondie. Lead the way.” Neither of them says a word about the contact, the electricity, or the burning urge to do it again that bangs against each of their chests. Somehow, an unspoken agreement has been made, one that both of them seem desperate to keep. ‘That didn’t happen, I didn’t love it, and it will never happen again.’ Of course, both of them also know it’s a lie, and are eagerly awaiting the next excuse to feel that softness again. Somewhere, in the middle of a surprisingly cool desert night, under a dark sky, one touch lights a spark, and two cold hearts start to thaw in the heat.
